NHRA set to return to popular Virginia Motorsports Park for Virginia NHRA Nationals in 2024

DINWIDDIE, Va. (Nov. 9, 2023) – NHRA officials announced today a return to Virginia Motorsports Park, regarded as one of the quickest and fastest tracks on the circuit, for the upcoming 2024 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season.

The Richmond-area facility will play host to the Virginia NHRA Nationals on June 21-23, serving as the ninth of 21 races during the 2024 campaign and filling one of the two TBD dates on next season’s highly-anticipated schedule. The remaining race location will be announced in the coming weeks. Ticket renewals for the Virginia NHRA Nationals will begin on Nov. 13 and tickets will go on sale to the general public on Dec. 18 for NHRA’s return to the popular Virginia Motorsports Park.

All four NHRA professional categories (Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle) will be in action in Virginia, along with specialty series like the NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series, Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage Mountain Motor Pro Stock and Top Fuel Motorcycle, as fans will be treated to a memorable weekend full of action in NHRA’s return to VMP.

“It’s exciting to see the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series return to Virginia Motorsports Park in 2024,” said Tommy Franklin, VMP President and Owner. “We want to give our fans the best possible experience at our track, and hosting the world’s quickest and fastest motorsport at our facility makes for a truly memorable weekend. We’re thrilled to host all four pro categories at VMP as we continue to make this facility a premier destination for racers and fans, and we can’t wait to have a fantastic event.”

NHRA last race at Virginia Motorsports Park came in 2022, with Brittany Force (Top Fuel), Robert Hight (Funny Car) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) picking up wins. Both Force and Smith went on to win world titles that year, and Force was also part of a record-setting weekend in Virginia. Racing on one of the smoothest surfaces on the NHRA tour, Force shattered the track record with a run of 3.654-seconds, also going a track-best 335.82 mph.

Matt Hagan set both ends of the track record with an impressive blast of 3.853, also going 335.82, while Angie Smith broke track records in Pro Stock Motorcycle with a run of 6.756 at 201.37. Larry “Spiderman” McBride also captivated fans in Virginia in 2022 at his home track in Top Fuel Motorcycle, going 268.38 mph and making the fastest motorcycle pass in drag racing history.

Next year’s race will also mark Pro Stock’s first appearance at the facility since 2019.

NHRA returned to Virginia Motorsports Park in 2018, racing in consecutive years and then again in 2022. The standout facility has made continuous upgrades in recent seasons, making it a favorite among racers and fans. Top Fuel points leader Steve Torrence won in both 2018 and 2019, while John Force has four wins in Virginia, with the last coming in 2000. Bo Butner won the most recent Pro Stock race in 2019, while M. Smith is the only active rider in Pro Stock Motorcycle with a win at the track.

Next year’s event includes the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge, a unique bonus event that brings competitive racing to Saturday and offers a bonus purse and bonus championship points. With qualifying on Friday, final qualifying and the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge on Saturday and eliminations on Sunday, fans can experience a weekend loaded with 11,000-horsepower, 330-mph excitement in 2024.

“We’re thrilled to add a great track like Virginia Motorsports Park to our 2024 schedule,” NHRA President Glen Cromwell said. “The Franklin family and their team are some of the most dedicated in our sport, and they’ve worked incredibly hard to make VMP a standout facility. Our teams love racing there, it’s an area full of passionate racing fans and we’re all looking forward to putting on a terrific show for them next June.”

NHRA AT POMONA 2: Team Chevy Race Advance

CHEVROLET LOOKS TO CAP OFF 2023 NHRA SEASON WITH TWO POTENTIAL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN POMONA

Robert Hight (Funny Car), Erica Enders, and Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) Will Vie for Top Countdown to the Championship Honors at the In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals

DETROIT (November 9, 2023) – The last race of the 2023 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series, and the Countdown to the Championship, sees Robert Hight of John Force Racing, as well as Erica Enders of Elite Motorsports and KB Titan Racing, battling it out down to the final weekend in their respective championship hunts.

For Hight, driver of the AAA/Cornwell Tools Chevrolet Camaro SS Funny Car, and his John Force Racing team, they stand to help claim Hight’s fourth career Funny Car championship. With 17 points separating the top-three frontrunners, including Matt Hagan in first, Bob Tasca, III in second, and Hight in third, it’s anyone’s championship to earn and likely could come down to the final round in Pomona.

“This is amazing and exactly what NHRA wants is for the championship to come down to the last race of the year the NHRA Finals, and for it to go clear down to the final round,” said Hight. “That’s a very real possibility of going to the final round and having to win the race to win the championship. There’s no more excitement than that. It’s points and a half in Pomona, but if it wasn’t points and a half, I think it would be more exciting this year because of how close we are. The way these three cars run, I don’t think anybody can gain a round with points and a half if we run to our potential. No one is running away with this deal. I’m just glad to be a part of it, and it’s going to be exciting. Probably a lot of sleepless nights between now and Sunday.”

With a 2023 season that’s seen Hight and his team earn four wins this year, in addition to two runner-ups and six No. 1 qualifiers, they look to cap off their championship run with a fifth victory. With finishing runner-up to the championship in 2022, Hight and his team look to Pomona for redemption and a World Championship.

If Hight were to achieve top honors, he would not only claim a fourth-career championship in addition to his 2009, 2017, and 2019 titles, but Chevrolet’s eighth drivers’ world championship in Funny Car as well as aiding in the 28th Manufacturers Cup claimed by the Bowtie brand since 1966.

Heading into the NHRA Finals, Erica Enders, driver of the Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage/Melling/SCAG Chevrolet Camaro SS Pro Stock, has the advantage of 114 points over fellow Chevrolet competitor Greg Anderson, of KB Titan Racing. With her season picking up steam after capturing her first victory of the year in Bristol, she additionally captured Wally trophies in Topeka, Dallas, and Las Vegas 2 when it mattered during the Countdown to the Championship. Additionally becoming the winningest female in NHRA history this season, Enders stands to collect her sixth Pro Stock World Championship this weekend and further solidify herself in motorsports history.

Her biggest threat, five-time Pro Stock champion, legend, and veteran racer Greg Anderson, driver of the HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro SS machine, is also seeking to add to his 2003, 2004, 2005, 2010, and 2021 titles. Additionally a three-time winning crew chief with Warren Johnson in 1992, 1993, and 1995, Anderson enters Pomona second in the championship standings behind Enders while looking for his 104th NHRA victory.

“I probably need a bit of a miracle to happen in Pomona, but it’s not over until it’s over,” said Anderson. “We are going there with all of the confidence in the world that we can win the race. You never wish bad fortune on anybody else, but if the other team happens to stumble, we will have a chance. I’m not going to Pomona acting defeated already, I’m going like I still have a chance until they tell me I don’t.”

With great thanks for the hard work and dedication of Chevrolet’s Funny Car, Pro Stock, Factory Stock Showdown, Super Stock, and Stock Eliminator classes, a 28th Manufacturers Cup is on the horizon for the Bowtie brand, the seventh consecutive award as well as ninth in the past 11 seasons. The Manufacturers Cup award will be presented to Chevrolet, along with champions being crowned, at NHRA’s annual Camping World Drag Racing Series Awards Ceremony Monday, Nov. 13, 2023, at the Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula, Calif.

The 2023 In-N-Out Burger NHRA Nationals at the In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip kicks off Friday, Nov. 10 in Pomona, Calif., with the weekend’s qualifying sessions airing Sunday, Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1 (FS1). Eliminations will follow, airing Sunday also at 4 p.m. ET of FS1. Coverage streams live throughout the weekend on NHRA.tv, and is available via AppleTV, Android TV, and Roku devices.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING:

Brittany Force, driver of the Monster Energy / Flav-R-Pac Chevrolet Top Fuel dragster for John Force Racing:

“I can’t believe we’re heading into the final race of the season at my home track in Pomona already. This track has a lot of memories and a lot of history for me personally and for John Force Racing. In-N-Out Burger Raceway at Pomona is a track I grew up at as a kid with my sisters watching our dad and since then I’ve won championships, won the event, gone No. 1, and set the national speed record on that property. We spent Monday testing in Vegas to really narrow in on issues we had over the weekend. We feel confident coming into Pomona that we’ll qualify top 5 and go rounds on race day. After all the history I’ve had here this Monster Energy / Flav-R-Pac team is really going to push to end this season on a strong note.”

Austin Prock, driver of the Montana Brand/Rocky Mountain Twist Chevrolet Top Fuel dragster for John Force Racing:

“I’m excited to get back to a racetrack. I’d love to be in a racecar every day of the week, so these off weekends are rough for me. I feel like this Montana Brand/Rocky Mountain Twist team has had a really good dragster the past two events in Dallas and Las Vegas. Hopefully, we can put it all together this weekend for the Finals and my favorite stop of the year.”

John Force, driver of the PEAK Antifreeze and Coolant Chevrolet Camaro SS Funny Car for John Force Racing:

“Pomona, the fairgrounds, that’s home. There’s a lot of history, and not just for me, for all of NHRA. I’m looking forward to getting back out there. It’s a difficult track but it’s exciting. I know we aren’t in it for the championship, but Robert and that AAA Cornwell Tools team is and maybe we can do some good to help them out. This PEAK team goes out every weekend to win, that’s no different now. End this season with a win for PEAK, Chevy and all our partners, that’s what we want to do.”

Erica Enders, driver of the Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage/Melling/SCAG Chevrolet Camaro SS Pro Stock for Elite Motorsports:

“It’s hard to believe that we are back in Pomona again. I would have never guessed, after our challenging start, that we would be contending for our sixth world title. It goes to show you what is possible when you never give up. I am fortunate to work with some of the most brilliant men in motorsports and they continue to show me why they are champions. We will attempt to make this another dream weekend. Eight possible runs, one more race, to show the world that we are Elite for a reason.”

Aaron Stanfield, driver of the Janac Brothers/Melling Engine Parts Chevrolet Camaro SS Pro Stock for Elite Motorsports:

“While consistency is good and it’s helped us maintain a solid position in the points, this team is bound and determined to get a win this weekend! My guys have worked tirelessly and I know we’ve got a car that can get the job done. It would be awesome to shake up the standings in a big way in a city that does everything big. Can’t wait to hit the track!”

Greg Anderson, driver of the HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro SS Pro Stock for KB Titan Racing:

On racing for the potential of a sixth championship this weekend…

“It’s awesome. Anytime you’re in the running for a championship going to Pomona, you have to consider that a good season. That’s what you ask for, that’s what you build for all year long: to make it to Pomona with a chance to win, and we have that. We have a chance to win – it may be a small one, but it’s a chance – and you have to consider that a success.”

Camrie Caruso, driver of the Powerbuilt Tools Chevrolet Camaro SS Pro Stock for KB Titan Racing:

“This season has flown by and I am looking forward to having a great weekend with my Powerbuilt Tools Chevrolet Camaro team in Pomona. Last year when we rolled into Pomona, I felt like we were in the final mile of a marathon with not much left in the tank. This year we have a whole new attitude. We have been going rounds in the Countdown and I think we can step up our performance with our KB Titan Racing power and be in the mix to win this last race.”

On winning in Arizona and being the second female in the Pro Stock Winner’s Circle…

“Winning in Arizona was a big deal but following it up with a No. 1 qualifier and semifinal finish in Pomona showed we had a consistent team that could compete at the highest level. This season we have improved a ton and we are just getting stronger I think. I want to come into Pomona this weekend and secure our spot in the Top Ten and move up in the standings.”

On tricky track conditions, and honing race craft with each run…

“We had an awesome car at Maple Grove and I was pulling away for the win when we got a little out of the groove and I had to lift. Two weeks ago in Vegas I lifted because we got a little sideways and I knew there was a chance of ruining the race car. I will always put safety first but those are two tough loses for sure. I am getting better in the car with every run and this season we have been making progress as a team. I want to finish strong at the NHRA Finals and then go after the championship again in 2024.”

On finishing the season strong…

“I want to finish as high as possible in the points and show improvement year over year. I learned a ton in my rookie season and I have learned even more this year as part of KB Titan Racing. We have big plans for 2024 but first we need to get after it in Pomona this weekend.”

The Fender Play Review You Should Read

Although many guitar training modules are on the market, many aren’t up to par. They can promise training and end up not delivering on the assurance. Consider Fender, a fantastic platform built for folks who want to learn an instrument by the company that’s made its legendary mark on music. Play is a guided online learning program for novice and intermediate guitarists with bite-sized sessions.

This offers a learning path centered on your objectives and musical inclinations, with hundreds of educational videos and hands-on activities. The Fender Play curriculum is structured so you can start something new after only a few short sessions, whether a talent, a recognized riff, or a whole song.

The program uses high-quality 4K multi-camera video with split-screen and over-the-shoulder viewpoints to create a unique and essential learning experience. Practice Mode and Feedback Mode enable you to play along with background tracks while also receiving real-time feedback on your progress.

New musicians will be questioned about their instrument, playing level, and preferred style. Play creates a customized learning path based on your responses. The route takes you from the fundamentals of learning to using the abilities and techniques that comprise the particular style you are interested in.

Your Path comprises many Levels of guided curriculum depending on your instrument and stylistic choices. After beginning a trial or subscription, you’ll be given questions to select your Path: which instrument you like (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, or ukulele), and the style you want to start with if you pick guitar or bass.

Play creates a unique learning Path based on your responses. The Path takes you from the fundamentals of learning to play to the abilities and methods that comprise your particular style.

If you don’t like your path, have decided to go in a different direction, or maybe want to learn more than one instrument at a time, that’s ok too! You may move between Paths (Instruments & Styles) at any moment, and your progress will be saved across any Paths you work on.

Play has four types of lessons: chords, riffs, skills and exercises, and song lessons. You can click here to learn more about chords. Designed to help give you helpful information in bite-sized pieces, each lesson is quick and short, so it doesn’t overwhelm you. In less than 10 minutes of lessons daily, you will play your guitar in no time.

As you progress, Fender Play tracks your progress, and there are two ways to view your progress through the courses and lessons.

Progress bars can be found throughout Fender Play. They are available on the Level, Lesson, and Course screens and give users a general idea of how far they have progressed through each one, and the course and level progress bars can be seen on My Path. The Level progress bar will begin filling in as you complete Courses, giving an approximate sense of how many courses in a level have been completed. The folks showing you how it’s done are specially trained and have lots of experience.

They are certified and competent teachers with several years of expertise. Fender collaborates closely with a team of advisers, including seasoned teachers, faculty members, and PhDs from USC’s (https://www.usc.edu/) Thornton School of Music and Hollywood’s Musician’s Institute and they continually test their courses with actual players and gather user input regularly to enhance their approach.

You can also access your lessons on your computer, tablet, and mobile phone via the Google Play Store and the Apple Store, or you can watch directly on your TV through those platforms.

What are the challenges that face drivers that switch from F1 to NASCAR?

When you have accomplished something in life and move on from it to try your hand at another challenge, there is a saying that is applied when approaching said new challenge. It is “like riding a bicycle.” Skills, especially when applied over many years, become second nature and when approaching a new but similar challenge, these skills simply need to be honed and adapted to a pristine environment. This is exactly the challenge faced by the Formula One drivers that make the switch to NASCAR. However, instead of getting back on the bicycle, it is a case of stepping back into the cockpit.

There are some fundamentals that are very much the same when looking at the two motorsports. The objective is to cross the finish line ahead of all the other drivers on the grid when the chequered flag is waving. The parameters and race framework to achieve this, however, is what makes NASCAR so unique and is what a lot, if not all F1 drivers that switch codes will have to get their heads around before taking to the NASCAR cockpit for the first time. While there will always be a need to adhere to the rules and regulations that govern a sport, the difference in the technical side of NASCAR compared to Formula One might be what entices drivers to switch.

The sheer weight of the car is what F1 drivers will notice first when it comes to the handling. NASCAR cars (3300lbs) have a minimum weight that is almost double that of a Formula One car (1759lbs), which automatically makes the handling more labored and would most definitely require a different driving style.

Luckily, though, there are not as many corners on a NASCAR track to negotiate. There are currently two former Formula One drivers, in Jenson Button and Kimi Raikkonen, who are competing in NASCAR, and their progress can be found at this resource, where you can find betting markets for upcoming events. Both are former F1 world champions (Raikkonen 2007, Button 2009) and are clearly not quite ready to hang up their helmets.

Due to the marathon nature of a NASCAR race, age does not necessarily play a telling role in the performance of a driver. If anything, the fitness of a driver during a NASCAR race is tested even more than that in an F1 race. Like in Formula One, there is no set number of laps for every race, with each track offering its unique length and challenge, but the length of a NASCAR race is significantly longer than what F1 drivers face. Instead of the maximum two hours, Button and Raikkonen are instead having their fitness pushed to the three-hour mark, which is another crucial factor that separates the best from the rest.

Corey Heim penalized following on-track dustups with Carson Hocevar at Phoenix

Photo by Patrick Sue-Chan for SpeedwayMedia.com.

Corey Heim has been issued a behavioral penalty from NASCAR following his on-track actions during the season-finale Craftsman 150 at Phoenix Raceway that occurred last Friday, November 3.

The issue stemming from Heim’s actions at Phoenix occurred with 31 laps remaining after the 21-year-old Heim from Marietta, Georgia, who had overtaken title contender Carson Hocevar a lap earlier, was hit by Hocevar in between Turns 1 and 2 causing Heim to spin and collect Stewart Friesen in the process. While Friesen hit the outside wall and damaged his truck, Heim managed to keep his No. 11 TRICON Garage Toyota Tundra TRD Pro off the wall and proceed without sustaining any significant damage.

Then with four laps remaining, Heim, who had rallied his way up to eighth place, returned the favor after he veered to the right in front of Hocevar, who was gaining ground of him, and sent both into the outside wall entering the backstretch. The incident damaged Hocevar’s truck and eliminated him from further contention, where he ended up 29th, while Heim, who was then hit by a spinning teammate Taylor Gray, managed to finish the finale in 18th place.

Despite denying any actions of retaliation during his post-race interview, NASCAR reviewed and determined that Heim had violated Sections 4.4.B & D, which refers to the Member Code of Conduct from NASCAR’s Rule Book.

As a result, Heim was fined $12,500 and docked 25 points in the driver’s standings. He had initially concluded the 2023 Truck Series season in third place in the final standings by virtue of being the third-highest-finishing title contender on the track. The penalty, however, dropped Heim to fourth place in the final standings behind the new third-place finisher, Hocevar. Ben Rhodes would claim his second series championship by finishing in fifth place on the track, one spot ahead of title contender Grant Enfinger.

The 2023 Truck Series season marked Heim’s first full-time campaign in the series, where he joined TRICON Garage after spending the previous season with Kyle Busch Motorsports and winning two races and the 2022 Rookie-of-the-Year title. Throughout the 2023 season, Heim achieved the regular-season championship, three victories, four poles, 12 top-five results, 19 top-10 results, 611 laps led and an average-finishing result of 6.8 throughout the 23-race schedule.

Heim is slated to return to TRICON Garage and continue to pilot the team’s No. 11 entry for the 2024 Craftsman Truck Series season as he will bid for both another Championship 4 run and the series’ title.

Heim’s 2024 Truck Series season is slated to commence at Daytona International Speedway for the season-opening Fresh from Florida 250, which will occur on February 16 at 7:30 p.m. ET on FS1.

CrowdStrike Racing by APR Targeting IMSA LMP2 Title in 2024

  • Preparations well under way for full-season championship challenge
  • CrowdStrike Racing by APR confirms George Kurtz, Colin Braun for IMSA WeatherTech Championship
  • IMSA rounds to prepare team for return trip to Le Mans 24 Hours

AUSTIN, Texas (November 8, 2023) – In its first year of competition, the CrowdStrike Racing by Algarve Pro Racing (APR) team turned in an impressive performance in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s LMP2 class. The program is ready for a successful encore as the the start of the season and the Rolex 24 At Daytona loom on the horizon.

In 2023, CrowdStrike Racing by APR won two races – including the season-ending Petit Le Mans – and finished second in the class championship.

For 2024, George Kurtz will welcome Colin Braun to the CrowdStrike Racing by APR lineup for the full seven-race schedule. The two are long-time teammates, having won the LMP2 Pro-Am class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year – along with James Allen – and recently captured the Fanatec GT World Challenge America Pro-Am title.

The goals for the CrowdStrike Racing by APR IMSA program in 2024 are simple: repeat as winner of the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup and secure a second straight Jim Trueman Award for Kurtz as the series’ leading Bronze-rated driver in LMP2 and a return trip to Le Mans in 2025.

Winning the class championship is the big prize. The chase for that begins at Daytona with the Rolex 24, scheduled for January 27-28.

CrowdStrike Racing by APR will soon begin preparations for the 2024 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season, which opens with the above-mentioned Rolex 24 At Daytona at the Daytona International Speedway.

CrowdStrike by APR Team Quotes

George Kurtz, CrowdStrike by APR Driver: “After the success of our first season together, the expectations are high for CrowdStrike Racing by APR in the IMSA LMP2 championship. It will be good to enter the new season with the experience and knowledge of having worked with the team in IMSA and at Le Mans. I’m excited about Colin joining the team. His experience with prototypes, and our history and success together make him a natural fit. I can’t wait to get the season started at Daytona.”

Colin Braun, CrowdStrike by APR Driver: “I can’t wait to get going with CrowdStrike Racing by APR in 2024 and make a run at the LMP2 championship alongside George. The dedication and professionalism of CrowdStrike Racing is unmatched and I’m honored to share a seat with George, who did such a fantastic job in 2023. It sure looks like LMP2 is going to be stacked with tough competitors, but we are ready for the challenge. IMSA racing is really special, and I look forward to another season!”

Stewart Cox, Team Principal, Algarve Pro Racing: “As a team, we’re pleased with how CrowdStrike Racing by APR’s 2023 campaign went, but we’re already pushing on with the intention for next season being to win the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship LMP2 titles. We missed out on this year’s by only a few points and we know exactly why, so we will come back with a slightly amended approach that all the math and data says will put us in the best possible position to win the overall championship, and also defend the Michelin Endurance Cup.”

Honda Develops World’s First Honda E-Clutch for Motorcycles

Honda E-Clutch

Honda Motor Co., Ltd has developed the world’s first(1) Honda E-Clutch system for motorcycles that enables smooth starting and gear shifting without the need for the rider to operate the clutch lever(2), by automatically controlling the clutch of the multi-gear manual motorcycle transmission.

The Honda E-Clutch is electronic control technology that realizes natural and smooth riding through instantaneous, fine-tuned clutch control without the rider needing to operate the clutch lever, for optimum performance in situations where the driving force changes, such as starting, stopping, and shifting gears. To meet a wide range of rider demands, the clutch can be operated manually like a normal manual transmission motorcycle by gripping the clutch lever, even when the clutch is being controlled electronically.

As Honda E-Clutch is a lightweight and compact system, it can be installed without major changes to existing engine layouts. Honda plans to apply Honda E-Clutch to its FUN motorcycle models over time.

Honda will continue to develop new technologies that improve the quality of the riding experience and provide motorcycles that meet the tastes of a wide range of riders who seek the joy of riding.

System Overview

The Honda E-Clutch electronically controls the power transmission mechanism similar to a conventional manual single clutch or manual transmission mechanism, combining engine-coordinated control (ignition timing, fuel injection, etc.) and clutch-coordinated control according to vehicle conditions (vehicle / engine speed, throttle position, gear position, shift pedal load detection, etc.), to respond to the rider’s inputs. In addition, manual clutch operation by using the clutch lever and the motorized clutch control are independent, enabling the rider to intervene manually, realizing both manual operation and clutch control by motor.

The system can be turned on or off. When the system is on, clutch operation is controlled automatically by default, and the rider can temporarily switch to manual clutch operation by using the clutch lever. When the system is off, the rider must operate the clutch with the clutch lever at all times (starting, shifting gears, and stopping).

TOP FUEL POINTS LEADER STEVE TORRENCE GEARS UP FOR INCREDIBLE FINISH AT IN-N-OUT BURGER NHRA FINALS

POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 7, 2023) – A points lead that has changed hands five times in the past six races signals just how tight the racing has been in Top Fuel during the end of the regular season and the NHRA Countdown to the Championship playoffs.

Steve Torrence went back into the lead in Las Vegas and heading into this weekend’s 58th annual In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals – the final race of the season in the 2023 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series season – at legendary In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip, he hopes to stay there for just one more race.

Torrence has been impressively consistent all season in his 11,000-horsepower Capco Contractors/Toyota dragster, never straying far from the lead. He’s never been lower than third in points this season, but Doug Kalitta and Leah Pruett are close behind. Kalitta trails by just 15 points and Pruett is 34 points back, as an epic final weekend awaits. Looking for his fifth world championship – and fifth in six years – the talented Texan is fired up for what could be an incredible finish in Pomona.

“This car is probably the best race car that I’ve ever driven,” Torrence said. “I think we’ve finally gotten to the point where it’s the best mouse trap we’ve ever had. It’s the fastest, it’s the most consistent, it’s by far the quickest race car I’ve ever driven. (In Las Vegas), we had the best race car, not the best driver. It’s a lot as a driver, not so much given the scenario of trying to win a champion but just going up there and getting in your own head. I’m more excited right now than I was at any point this whole season. I’m looking forward to going to Pomona. We’ve got two great competitors biting at our heels, but I have experience.”

Austin Prock (Top Fuel), Cruz Pedregon (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Angie Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) won last year’s event, while Brittany Force (Top Fuel), Ron Capps (Funny Car), Erica Enders (Pro Stock) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) claimed world championships. The race will be broadcast on FS1, including eliminations at 4 p.m. ET on Sunday as the season closes in style. Since 1984, the NHRA Finals has been where champions are crowned and this closes out the 21-race season and six-event playoffs.

A Pomona victory would ensure a championship for Torrence and his team and, remarkably, if that happens it would be just the second win this season for the veteran. It’s another nod to his consistency, as Torrence has advanced to the semifinals or better 13 times in 2023 and been to the finals six times.

But Torrence knows his work is cut out for him trying to keep Kalitta and Pruett – both seeking their first world title – at bay. Mike Salinas and Justin Ashley also remain in contention in the loaded field, which means the eventual champion may have to be close to perfect on championship Sunday.

“It’s going right down to the wire,” Torrence said. “But it’s all about who executes the best this week. It doesn’t matter what’s happened the rest of the year. It’s about who can get it done in this one race.

“I’m looking forward to it. I’m just having fun and it’s pretty cool to be in this position again with the competition and the level of competition that we’ve seen this year.”

It’s a remarkably tight field in Funny Car, with Matt Hagan leading Bob Tasca III by 15 points and Robert Hight by only 17 points heading into the must-see finale that could come down to the final pass of the season.

In Pro Stock, Enders is closing in on a sixth world title and her fourth in five years. She holds a 114-point lead over Greg Anderson and could clinch a championship with a strong qualifying performance in Pomona.

Pro Stock Motorcycle’s Gaige Herrera has enjoyed a historic season will have a chance to earn his first world championship in qualifying to start the weekend.

It all adds up to a historic weekend that no fan should miss. If that isn’t enough, champions will also be crowned in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, as well as action in the Jr. Dragster Shootout, the “Walking Tall” P.T. Cruiser Wheelstander driven by “NitroMike” and autograph sessions, including one with legend Don “The Snake” Prudhomme and Capps.

Race fans at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip can enjoy the special pre-race ceremonies that celebrate each of the drivers racing for the prestigious Wally on Sunday and includes the SealMaster Track Walk. The final can’t-miss experience of any NHRA event is the winner’s circle celebration on Sunday after racing concludes, where fans are invited to congratulate the event winners and 2023 world champs.

Fans are also invited to the Nitro Alley Stage all weekend, as the entertainment hub hosts Nitro School, meet and greets, influencer interviews and much more. As always, fans get a pit pass to the most powerful and sensory-filled motorsports attraction on the planet and can see their favorite teams in action and servicing their hot rods between rounds, get autographs from their favorite NHRA drivers, and more.

NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series qualifying will feature two rounds at 12 and 3 p.m. PT on Friday, and the final two rounds of qualifying on Saturday at 12 and 3 p.m. Final eliminations are scheduled for 11 a.m. PT on Sunday. Television coverage includes qualifying action on FS1 at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday, leading into eliminations at 4 p.m. ET.

To purchase tickets to the 58th annual In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals, fans can visit www.NHRA.com/tickets. All children 12 and under will be admitted free in the general admission area with a paid adult. Fans can get closer to the action with a Top Eliminator Club experience, offering the best seats in the house and a premium experience, as well as a members-only hospitality center, complimentary food and beverage, driver appearances, a premium view and more.
