Toyota scores 200th NASCAR Xfinity Series victory

KANSAS CITY (September 9, 2023) – With John Hunter Nemechek’s victory in NASCAR Xfinity Series action at Kansas Speedway today, Toyota has earned its 200th NASCAR Xfinity Series win.

“In a season filled with big moments, we are honored to celebrate another accomplishment,” said David Wilson, president, TRD. “From the special first victory in Indianapolis in 2007 to the recent championship success achieved, we are proud to celebrate our 200th Xfinity Series victory. The collaboration between our teams and TRD has been exceptional. Although we will take a moment to celebrate this incredible achievement, we remain focused on our goals this season, which include our third consecutive driver’s title.”

The late Jason Leffler drove a Toyota Camry to victory at Indianapolis Raceway Park on July 28, 2007, to earn the first victory for the Camry nameplate and first NASCAR Xfinity Series win for Toyota, while Christopher Bell earned the first Toyota GR Supra win at Atlanta Motor Speedway on February 23, 2019.

Toyota has won 149 NASCAR Xfinity Series races in the Toyota Camry and 51 in the Toyota GR Supra. Twenty-two drivers have won in the NASCAR Xfinity Series for Toyota led by Kyle Busch’s 91 victories. Joey Logano (18), Bell (17), Denny Hamlin (13) and Ty Gibbs (12) have also won more than 10 races in a Toyota, while Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) has won 193 of the 200 races for Toyota in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

Toyota and TRD currently provide support for two teams – JGR and Sam Hunt Racing – in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, with five Toyota GR Supras on track each weekend. Toyota has won four driver championships, including the last two with Daniel Hemric (2021) and Ty Gibbs (2022).

Rosenqvist Rockets To NTT P1 Award at Laguna Seca

MONTEREY, Calif. (Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023) – Arrow McLaren posted stickers reading “THANK YOU FRO” inside the car of Felix Rosenqvist this weekend at the season-ending Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey.

After NTT P1 Award qualifying Saturday, the team has even more reason to thank the Swedish driver.

Rosenqvist won the pole for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES season finale in his last race with Arrow McLaren, turning a lap of 1 minute, 6.6416 seconds in the team’s No. 6 Chevrolet during the Firestone Fast Six. It’s the second NTT P1 Award this season and fifth career pole for Rosenqvist, who will move to Meyer Shank Racing next season.

“This is our last race together tomorrow, so what a way to get that going,” Rosenqvist said. “Especially here, track position is super important. We couldn’t have given ourselves a better opportunity.”

Rosenqvist will try to earn his second career win and first with Arrow McLaren in the 95-lap race Sunday. Live coverage starts at 2:30 p.m. ET on NBC, Peacock, Telemundo Deportes on Universo and the INDYCAR Radio Network.

Scott McLaughlin will join Rosenqvist on the front row after his qualifying lap of 1:06.6513 in the No. 3 XPEL Team Penske Chevrolet. McLaughlin just missed unseating Rosenqvist from the top spot on the last flying lap of the Firestone Fast Six, almost overcoming a mistake at the start of his hot lap.

“I dropped a wheel at (Turn) 10, the fast right-hander, just trying to get that extra little bit,” McLaughlin said. “The car was mega. I really feel bad for these guys on the XPEL Chevy. Congrats to Felix. It’s pretty awesome he got his last pole with the team there.”

Christian Lundgaard qualified third at 1:06.7478 in the No. 45 Hy-Vee Honda of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. The Firestone Fast Six was a case of what could have been for Lundgaard, who bounced inside the apex of the famous Corkscrew corner on his penultimate qualifying run, losing time on a lap that appeared to be headed for pole.

Lundgaard also set an INDYCAR SERIES track record of 1:06.4610 during the second round of qualifying, breaking Helio Castroneves’ record of 1:07.722 set in 2000. The 11-turn, 2.238-mile road course was repaved this May, with extra grip leading to quicker times and higher speeds.

Two-time series champion Josef Newgarden qualified fourth at 1:06.7937 in the No. 2 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet.

Six-time series champion Scott Dixon will start on the inside of Row 3 after qualifying fifth at 1:07.0171 in the No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. Alex Palou, who clinched his second season championship last Sunday at Portland, qualified sixth at 1:07.2846 in the No. 10 The American Legion Honda of Chip Ganassi Racing. Palou earned a spot in the Firestone Fast Six for the ninth time this season.

Juri Vips was the top rookie qualifier, seventh in the No. 30 Mi-Jack Honda of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Former Formula 2 driver Vips made his NTT INDYCAR SERIES debut last weekend at Portland.

One of the biggest surprises in the first round of qualifying was the elimination of Colton Herta, who led practice Friday in the No. 26 Gainbridge Honda fielded by Andretti Autosport w/Curb-Agajanian. Herta, who will start 15th, won this race from the pole in 2019 and 2021.

A 30-minute practice at noon ET will precede the race, with live coverage on Peacock and the INDYCAR Radio Network.

Sound Bites:

“I don’t know. I don’t want to put blame on anybody. I don’t know if it’s just dumb luck or what. I don’t know how long [the tire] was sitting up there, but it just sucks. I was committed into the corner to try to carry a bunch of speed in there, wash up into the corner and that tire was sitting right where I was washing up into. So, it just sucks. I saw it, you know, two car lengths before and then I was into it. It was just too late; I couldn’t miss it. We had a fast car, though. Our guys have been working all year trying to find that little bit of speed that we need and I think we had it today. We just needed to get our balance a little bit better. Honestly, I see this as a momentum gain. I’m looking forward to the playoffs, I think we’re going to have a good run.” – Cole Custer, driver of the No. 00 Haas Automation Ford Mustang

“I’ve had this mindset for the last few weeks. I went into Daytona with the mindset to become a better race car driver and hopefully to win races this year. I wasn’t looking too far ahead to the playoffs and points racing. Obviously, every driver starts in Daytona setting out to win a championship, but I was looking at it at a more personal level and being a better race car driver. We still have opportunities to go win races, and I honestly felt like today we had a really good opportunity to win this race even after the damage to our Monster Energy Ford Mustang on the early restart, but we’ll move onto Bristol and see what we’ve got.” – Riley Herbst, driver of the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang

Next Up:

The next event on the NASCAR Xfinity Series schedule is the Food City 300 on Friday, Sept. 15 at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway. It is the first race of the Xfinity Series playoffs and the first race of the Round of 12. The race begins at 7:30 p.m. EDT with live coverage provided by USA and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

TOYOTA QUOTES

JOHN HUNTER NEMECHEK, No. 20 Pye Barker Fire & Safety Toyota GR Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

Finishing Position: 1st

You earned the 200th Xfinity Series win for Joe Gibbs Racing, and now you have earned the 200th Xfinity Series win for Toyota. What does that mean to you?

“With us being able to get 200 wins for Toyota on the Xfinity side is something special. I think is what makes it even more special is after my year in Cup in 2020, the opportunity I had to go Truck racing with Kyle Busch – it wouldn’t have happened without KB or Toyota, TRD. To go Xfinity Series racing, it wouldn’t have happened without Coach (Joe Gibbs), Coy (Gibbs), and a lot of others that were involved, as well as Toyota, TRD. They mean a lot to me, I’m glad to continue my relationship with them in the future. Hopefully, we can win a lot more races together.”

Can you talk about how great your race car was today?

“Our Pye Barker Toyota GR Supra was really, really good. Hats off to this whole 20 crew, Toyota, TRD, everybody at Joe Gibbs Racing. We finally got the Pye Barker colors back in victory lane. That’s really special. I have to say hello to (wife) Taylor, (daughters) Aspen and Penelope back home as well. We will celebrate when we get home. Overall, amazing day, amazing car. We came in here with a goal to get a 60-point day to try maximize Playoff points and we were able to do so. It’s a huge step going into the Playoffs. We definitely have momentum on our side. Looking forward to get started next weekend in Bristol.”

What does a win like this cap off a great week for you?

“It means a lot – but everything this week went as fast as Xfinity 10G, so I haven’t really been able to sit in, and really think about the future. I’m glad that the announcement came out, but once it came out – I haven’t thought about next year at all. It’s all about 2023 and going to win a championship for this 20 team. We set a lot of goals coming into this year and we still have a lot to achieve, so that is what we are going to do.”

KAZ GRALA, No. 26 Island Coastal Lager Toyota GR Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

Finishing Position: 10th

How was your race?

“Pretty good say for our Island Coastal Lager Supra. We started pretty deep in the field, but I was impressed – we were on the move pretty much immediately. We worked right up to the top-12 after the first couple of restarts, and settled in there. We were a solid probably eight-to-12th place car all day, which for us on a big track like this, is really, really solid. Proud of everybody. The pit crew did a great job. That was a lot of fun, we had this thing pretty dialed in – in the third stage. Glad we can get a top-10 finish. I feel like we needed this for momentum, we haven’t had the best luck lately, so this was a good step in the right direction.”

McElrea Dominant in Laguna Seca Victory; Rasmussen on Brink of Title

MONTEREY, Calif. (Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023) – Hunter McElrea did everything he could by leading all 35 laps to win the INDY NXT by Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey Race 1 on Saturday at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, but Christian Rasmussen’s hands are all but on the series; championship trophy after the first race of the season-ending doubleheader.

McElrea never trailed from the pole position to earn his second victory of the season in the No. 27 Smart Motors car fielded by Andretti Autosport, winning the race under caution. The win pulled McElrea from 65 points to within 51 of leader Rasmussen with one race remaining, at 12:50 p.m. ET Sunday (live, Peacock, INDYCAR Radio Network). Rasmussen finished second today in the No. 6 HMD Motorsports with DCR machine.

“What a crazy race,” McElrea said. “I was driving like 90 percent and built like a six-second lead. The car was phenomenal. The restarts weren’t easy, weren’t making my life easy, but I knew we had the speed. That’s it: I just have to win two races and hope for the best.”

Rasmussen earned the pole for the race Sunday, and all he needs to do is start the 35-lap event to clinch the championship for the INDYCAR development series.

“I did what I needed to do,” Rasmussen said. “Hunter was super quick all race long, and I knew I really didn’t have anything for him. It was a lonely race for me. I was just sitting in second. I had a big gap in front and a big gap behind.

“I just have to start the race. Just going to be full enjoyment. Starting on the pole position, and we’ll see what happens.”

Danial Frost finished third Saturday in the No. 68 HMD Motorsports with DCR car. Kyffin Simpson placed fourth in the No. 21 HMD Motorsports with CGR machine, with Matthew Brabham rounding out the top five in the No. 76 Juncos Hollinger Racing entry.

McElrea controlled the entire race from the front. He cruised to nearly a seven-second lead over Rasmussen when the first of four caution flags in the race flew, on Lap 18. McElrea pulled away to a lead of nearly two seconds after the first lap after restarts on Laps 22 and 26.

Rasmussen kept it closer on the final restart on Lap 30. He had saved push-to-pass for the end of the race and kept within a second of leader McElrea on the closing laps around the 11-turn, 2.238-mile road course.

Danish driver Rasmussen pulled to within one-half second of McElrea when the No. 28 DHL car of Jamie Chadwick and the No. 39 HMD Motorsports with DCR machine of Nolan Siegel collided in Turn 10, triggering the race-ending caution on Lap 34.

“I was bringing it pretty good at the end,” Rasmussen said. “I could keep close to Hunter because I think I saved so much through the race. I don’t know if I would have had something for him on that last lap, but very satisfied with P2.”

  5. Tyler Reddick (Toyota)

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (Sept. 9, 2023) – Team Chevy’s Kyle Larson will take the green-flag from a front-row starting position in tomorrow’s Hollywood Casino 400. The 31-year-old California native posted the third-fastest lap in Round One of Group B qualifying, following up the performance with a lap-time of 30.029 seconds, at 179.826 mph, in the final round to take his No. 5 HENDRICKCARS.COM Camaro ZL1 to the second position on the speed chart. Already sealing his fate into the Round of Eight with his triumph at Darlington Raceway last weekend, Larson has added momentum heading into tomorrow’s race with the driver leading Chevrolet to a runner-up finish in the series’ spring appearance at the 1.5-mile Kansas oval.

The 20-minute practice session proved to be a challenge for a few of the Team Chevy playoff drivers. After climbing to the second position on the leaderboard in his practice session, William Byron brought his Chevrolet to pit road to diagnose a potential mechanical issue. The No. 24 RaptorTough.com Camaro ZL1 team was able to make repairs to post a qualifying lap, but will be forced to start at the tail of the field for tomorrow’s event. Byron still proved to have the speed to be a contender, taking his Chevrolet to the final round of qualifying and ultimately posting the eighth-fastest lap.

“I was coming off of (turn) four coming down the front straightaway and the wheel just kind of jerked to the left and it felt like I unloaded the wheel, so I knew it was something steering-related,” said Byron. “Unfortunately at first, we couldn’t really find it, and then when we started messing with the wheel sitting on pit road, it was a broken right-front suspension piece. It’s a pretty substantial suspension component. We’ve never had that happen – probably just from running really fast around here. Our Raptor Chevrolet had a lot of pace there. I felt really good about our car.”

Joining Larson and Byron in the final round of qualifying included their Hendrick Motorsports’ teammate Chase Elliott, who took his No. 9 NAPA Auto Parts Camaro ZL1 to fourth-place qualifying effort. Trackhouse Racing’s Ross Chastain and Richard Childress Racing’s Austin Dillon qualified in the sixth and eighth positions, respectively, to give three Chevrolet teams spots in the top-10 of tomorrow’s starting lineup.

The Hollywood Casino 400 – race two of the Round of 16 – will take the green flag tomorrow, September 9, at 3 p.m. ET. Live coverage of the 400-mile race can be found on the USA Network, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Channel 90.

On-track activities at the 1.5-mile track got underway this afternoon with group practice and qualifying to determine the starting lineup for tomorrow’s Hollywood Casino 400.

The No. 12 Wabash Ford Mustang of Ryan Blaney led the Team Penske stable in practice with the fifth-fastest pace, followed by Joey Logano (26th) and Austin Cindric (27th). In qualifying, Logano clocked the fastest time of his teammates in the No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Ford Mustang and will take the green flag from the 11th position on Sunday. Blaney and the No. 12 team are set to start 17th with teammate Cindric and the Menards/Richmond Ford Mustang qualifying 18th.

Wood Brothers Racing’s Harrison Burton will roll off the grid from the 29th position in the No. 21 Menards/Masterforce Ford Mustang.

WHAT THEY SAID: “Our Shell-Pennzoil Ford Mustang was good. Turns one and two were decent. I got right at the two-thirds mark of turn four, got tight, and had to lift too big. It was trending in the right direction in one and two. It felt like I was going to turn well enough to be able to use that much throttle there but it just didn’t hold. We were so close to being able to go to the second round and have a shot at the pole but that’s how the game’s played.” – Joey Logano

WHAT’S NEXT – Sunday afternoon’s 267-lap, 400-mile race at Kansas Speedway begins at 3:00 p.m. ET with coverage on USA, MRN, and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Channel 90.

NASCAR Cup Series Quotes

KANSAS CITY (September 9, 2023) – Joe Gibbs Racing driver Christopher Bell was made available to media after winning the pole for the NASCAR Cup Series event at Kansas Speedway on Saturday:

CHRISTOPHER BELL, No. 20 DeWalt Perform & Protect Toyota Camry TRD, Joe Gibbs Racing

Did you even realize how quick your lap was?

“No, I didn’t. Ross (Chastain) ran a 29.9 in round one, so I knew the track had it out there and whenever I looked at the data in between the rounds, I felt like I could at least get better than I was in round one. The guys did an excellent job making adjustments and getting the balance a little closer and I was able to drive a little harder, and 29.9 was the answer.”

Last week, pole at Darlington, but not a great result. How do you avoid mistakes?

“By controlling what you can control. There’s – I don’t know how many people – but a handful of people on the team that just have to control what they can control. I’m a big part of that equation. Last week, I made a mistake early in the race that ruined our finish and that was me not doing my job. I’m glad I get another opportunity this week to control what I can control and get the best finish I can out of it.”

Does you winning the pole help your guys relax going into tomorrow?

“Hopefully, it makes them feel good because the number one pit stall is a pretty big advantage. I’m super excited to be driving for this pit crew. They’ve proven themselves throughout the entire season, and I didn’t give them a fair opportunity last week to show what they are made of. I’m glad we get another no. 1 pit stall opportunity and I’m confident that myself and the pit crew will do a much better job this week.”

Toyota typically has speed at Kansas, and you have as well with the 20 team. How do you complete the race tomorrow?

“The races are long. Cup races are really long – there is a lot of things that are going to happen between the green flag and the checkered flag. The biggest thing is just being there at the end and not taking yourself out of it. I think that we have the equipment, we’ve got the pit stall, I’ve got the pit crew – so if I keep my guys in it and get our race car, which is super-fast to the end of the race, we are going to be in a really good spot. I’m really excited about tomorrow. I love this race track. I love qualifying here too. It’s so much fun to be able to drive as hard as you can, put it right up against the wall and see what she’s got. Fun day, and I’m excited for another fun day tomorrow.”

What does this track mean to you?

“That was a big one. It was my first win for Joe Gibbs Racing, and it was in my part-time Xfinity Series schedule. I’m sure it meant a lot to the people at Joe Gibbs Racing because they saw me win in the Truck Series, but that was my first win for them. That was cool. I consider Texas my home track, but this is my second home track. I normally have family whenever we come here and race, it’s one of my favorite stops on the schedule. The track is awesome. It’s definitely one that I enjoy. It’s special to me.”

How did your early Xfinity Series win here help move your career forward?

“It’s a tough question, because winning in a lower series typically gets you an opportunity in the next series, but your wins in the lower series mean nothing in the next opportunity. It’s all about when you get that next opportunity maximize it and make the most of it. I was fortunate to have great trucks and I won in the Truck Series, and that got me an opportunity in the Xfinity car. Being able to win in the Xfinity car, so early in my career, was a huge moment. It meant a lot to me personally, I can’t speak for Joe Gibbs Racing, but hopefully it meant a lot to them too.”

How much did that win mean to you?

“You are always hoping for that opportunity to prove to yourself that you can do it, and any time you can go out there and do something good – win a race, win a pole or whatever it may be – it certainly resonates in your head that I can do this. This opportunity is not too big for me. This moment, this series – I’m ready for it. It was a special race, and an important race in my career. Looking back of how I got to where I am, if you take that Kansas win out – it certainly changes things. It was a big race for me.”

How cool has it been to see Brexton Busch start in kind of the same path you started on?

“It’s been fun following Brexton’s (Busch) career for sure. I’m glad that Kyle (Busch) has got him starting out basically right where I did 20 years ago. It’s cool, and I’m excited to see Brexton’s career path too – what way Kyle takes, if he’s going to stay dirt track racing or go pavement racing, but hopefully, Kyle is seeing the advantage that dirt track racing provides a young driver.”

How difficult is it not competing in dirt races this season?

“It’s been a change of pace for sure, but I recognize the importance of my day job and how important it is for me be here week-in and week-out. We saw it with the 9 (Chase Elliott) and 48 (Alex Bowman) – they are both not in the Playoffs because of what they did outside of their day jobs. I’m so fortunate to be in this position driving Coach Joe Gibbs. I understand that this is the priority.”

MICHAEL MCDOWELL, No. 34 FR8Auctions.com Ford Mustang – “Just like every weekend, just a lot of hard work. I’m proud of everybody at Front Row. We’re fighting hard. We got ourselves in a hole at Darlington, so we know our backs are up against the wall. We all know – I know – how important track position is. I mean, I risked it all in qualifying. I know a lot of people did, but that was everything I had – plus some. Just thankful that I have a great car, have it stick, and we’ll have a good starting spot for tomorrow. Just trying to stay alive in this Playoff.

OVER THE LAST COUPLE DAYS AND IN TODAY’S QUALIFYING, IT SEEMS LIKE WE’RE GETTING A LOT OF BRUSHES AGAINST THE OUTSIDE WALL. IS THAT A CONCERN HEADING INTO THE RACE? “This place, especially right now in qualifying, is such high-commitment, because you’re entering almost wide-open right against the wall and not pulling it down much. It’s nerve-racking laps here in qualifying. I watched that Tyler Reddick in-car from Darlington last week – he must’ve hit the wall 17,000 times. So, I think I’ll be less concerned about the little brushes up against the wall tomorrow. Just seeing how much he was able to bounce off the wall and not have any toe-link problems or anything like that. But just like anything, there’s going to be a limitation of hitting something too hard.”

JOEY LOGANO, No. 22 Shell Pennzoil Ford Mustang – “The balance was too tight in four. We were trending okay right before that – just got too tight. We’re not quick enough, and we need to go to work. I think on the restarts, everyone is going to be really aggressive with each other. So, you just hope that you’re in the right place at the right time on these restarts, pick the right lanes and do the right things. We’ll study that stuff tonight, and we’ll try to make our car faster as well. If we have both, we’ll be all right.”
