Todd Gilliland and the No. 38 Ruedebusch Development and Construction Ford Team Circuit of The Americas Competition Notes

TEAM AND RACE NOTES:

Todd Gilliland and the No. 38 team return the Ruedebusch Development and Construction colors this weekend for NASCAR’s first road course of the season. Gilliland finished 16th last season in this race and had other strong performances on road courses.

Gilliland holds his NASCAR Cup Series best finish on the road course at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway flying the Ruedebusch Development and Construction colors. He then led laps and was pulling away from the leaders at Watkins Glen before a mechanical failure ended his day.

The Ruedebusch Development and Construction Ford team are back again this weekend at COTA. Sunday’s race will be televised live at 3:30 p.m. ET on FOX.

COMPETITION NOTES:

Gilliland and the team are on the right track. They jumped three positions in the NASCAR Cup Series driver standings after their first top-15 finish of the season at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. They are 25th in the standings and can easily jump another few positions with a great finish on Sunday.

CREW CHIEF RYAN BERGENTY:

“I have a ton of confidence in Todd at road courses. He proved that last season at Indianapolis, Watkins Glen, and even had a good race at COTA under really challenging conditions. I think we can surprise some of these guys this weekend. It just will not be a surprise to us.”

DRIVER TODD GILLILAND:

“I love the road courses. We learned so much last season and it gives us confidence that we know how to find and have speed in the cars. And COTA is cool. I have won there, and I just love the track.

“Really, it’s just simple. This is Texas. Bring your cowboy hat, Boot Barn boots, and have some fun. We’ll get this Ruedebusch Development and Construction Ford up front.”

Ford Performance – Circuit of The Americas Advance

CIRCUIT OF THE AMERICAS NOTES

Saturday, March 25 – NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, 1:30 p.m. ET (FS1)

Saturday, March 25 – NASCAR Xfinity Series, 5 p.m. ET (FS1)

Sunday, March 26 – NASCAR Cup Series, 3:30 p.m. ET (FOX)

NASCAR and its three major series will venture to the Lone Star State for one of its five road racing events of 2023. Circuit of The Americas has swiftly become a fan-favorite since its series debut in 2021, as the full 3.426-mile course welcomes an assortment of new challenges year-to-year. Ford will be seeking its first Cup and Xfinity victories, while Zane Smith returns as the 2022 winner in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.

NO. 22 TO NO. 4

Last week’s victory at Atlanta Motor Speedway helped Joey Logano eclipse the top-five on the Ford all-time Cup wins list. Logano, who simultaneously won his first points race of the season, is now tied with Dale Jarrett for fourth with 30 victories. Logano carries a one-point championship lead into Circuit of The Americas.

FORD ALL-TIME WINS LIST

1 – Ned Jarrett – 43

2 – Bill Elliott – 40

3 – Mark Martin – 35

4 – Jarrett / Logano – 30

FORD’S ACTIVE ROAD COURSE CUP WINNERS

There are three current drivers who have won a NASCAR Cup Series race on a road course with Ford. The most recent winner was Ryan Blaney, who captured the inaugural event at the Charlotte Roval in 2018. Kevin Harvick, who goes into this weekend with 25 career Ford victories in just over six years, got his first with the Blue Oval in 2017 when he won at Sonoma. Joey Logano scored his Cup victory at Watkins Glen International in 2015, which completed a weekend sweep after he won the NASCAR Xfinity Series race one day earlier.

OTHER FORD ROAD COURSE WINNERS

Besides the drivers mentioned above, Ford has six other active Cup competitors who have won on a road course in either the NASCAR Cup, NASCAR Xfinity or NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Brad Keselowski (Watkins Glen NXS with Ford, 2013); Chris Buescher (Mid-Ohio NXS with Ford, 2014); Michael McDowell (Road America NXS, 2016); Austin Cindric (NXS wins with Ford at Watkins Glen, 2019; Mid-Ohio, 2019; Road America, 2020, Daytona Road Course, 2020; and Indianapolis Road Course, 2021); Chase Briscoe (NXS wins with Ford at Charlotte Roval, 2018; and Indianapolis Road Course, 2020); and Todd Gilliland (Circuit of the Americas NCTS with Ford, 2021).

GURNEY IS FORD’S ALL-TIME ROAD COURSE WINNER

NASCAR has competed on 16 different road courses during its history and Ford has had 21 drivers win 33 times overall. Dan Gurney leads the way with five, which included four straight wins at Riverside International Raceway from 1963-66 while driving for the Wood Brothers. Mark Martin is second with four.

HERBST CONTINUES TOP 10 STREAK

Riley Herbst continued his Top 10 streak last weekend with a fifth-place finish at Atlanta Motor Speedway – highlighted by back-to-back top-five performances that also included a fourth in Phoenix. From the end of the 2022 season, Herbst now has eight straight Top 10 finishes and comes into Saturday’s race at Circuit of The Americas tied for second in the point standings (202).

A NASCAR FIRST

Todd Gilliland became the first NASCAR driver to win a national series event at Circuit of the Americas when he captured the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race in 2021. In a weekend that was hampered by rain, Gilliland was able to manage the mixed conditions of dry and wet pavement to win by nearly eight seconds. Gilliland, who registered his second series win that day, continues to look for his first NASCAR Cup Series victory this weekend in his third season driving for Front Row Motorsports.

A CHAMPION’S MENTALITY

Zane Smith returns as the the series’ most recent winner at Circuit of The Americas. As a part of Smith’s 2022 championship campaign, he led the race when it counted with wins in Stage 1 and 2, as well as taking the lead with two laps remaining in the second overtime period to earn the victory. Ford has been represented in victory lane for the series’ first two appearances at Circuit of The Americas.

CRAFTON LEADS FORD POINTS CHARGE

Matt Crafton is one of four Ford drivers represented in the top-five of the points standings after Atlanta Motor Speedway. Crafton currently stands second (126) in a closely contested points race, followed by Ty Majeski (3rd, 123), Ben Rhodes (4th, 119) and Zane Smith (5th, 116).

FORD’S ALL-TIME CUP ROAD COURSE WINNERS

5 – Dan Gurney

4 – Mark Martin

2 – Fireball Roberts, Marvin Panch, Parnelli Jones, Ricky Rudd, Marcos Ambrose

1 – Chuck Stevenson, Eddie Gray, Richard Petty, A.J. Foyt, Bobby Allison, Bill Elliott, Davey Allison, Geoffrey Bodine, Ernie Irvan, Rusty Wallace, Carl Edwards, Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, Ryan Blaney.

FORD’S COTA CRAFTSMAN TRUCK SERIES WINNERS

2021 – Todd Gilliland

2022 – Zane Smith

FORD ROAD COURSE WINS IN THE MODERN ERA (1972-Present)

Circuit of the Americas is one of eight road courses the NASCAR Cup Series has competed on in the modern era, joining Riverside International Raceway (1958-88), Watkins Glen International (1957-Present), Sonoma Raceway (1989-Present), Charlotte Motor Speedway (2018-Present), Daytona International Speedway (2020-2021), Road America (2021-2022) and Indianapolis Motor Speedway (2021-Present). Ford has produced a total of 19 combined wins at those facilities from 1972-Present. Mark Martin leads the way with four victories, including three straight years at Watkins Glen, while Ricky Rudd, Marcos Ambrose and Geoffrey Bodine have two each.

PARDUS EAGER TO KICK OFF HIS SEASON AT COTA

Racer outperformed numerous well-funded teams, drivers in 2022 Austin race

AUSTIN, Texas — It’s been more than five months since Preston Pardus turned laps in his NASCAR Xfinity car, but his 2023 debut finally arrives this weekend at the Circuit of The Americas with a new car number and a primary corporate partner.

Pardus, a three-time SCCA national champion, will attack the 21-turn course in a Chevrolet now bearing the No. 50 – a number his father and crew chief, Dan, used briefly in NASCAR Cup competition in 1999. The team’s Chevrolet will weave its way around the 3.41-mile track with a local distiller, Garage Oil American Badass Whiskey, adorning its hood and rear quarterpanels.

In the Xfinity series’ two previous ventures to CoTA, Pardus has produced a pair of 14th-place, lead-lap finishes. He’s eager to kick off the stock car portion of his 2023 schedule in Texas.

“It was a solid weekend last year – a good baseline to start the season off with,” said the 25-year-old resident of New Smyrna Beach, Florida. “We had good pace in qualifying, and I haven’t qualified all that well in the past. I thought we raced pretty well. The only bummer is we had a pit-road penalty, and that obviously hurt track position. Anytime you lose track position, it’s hard to get it back.

“Even so, it was one of those days that was solid and we stayed out of trouble other than that one deal on pit road – so it was a good weekend.”

“Good” may be an understatement.

Pardus reached the finish line ahead of luminaries such as: eventual Xfinity Series champion Ty Gibbs (all four Joe Gibbs Racing drivers, in fact); NASCAR Cup regular Bubba Wallace; Ross Chastain, the National Motorsports Press Association’s Driver of the Year; and Justin Allgaier, a 19-time Xfinity race winner.

“We definitely had good race pace,” Pardus said. “The set-up was good. We unloaded really good, which was a huge goal – and will be huge for us this year with no owner points. We were quickest in practice in a short session and seventh in qualifying, so that was important.

“A good starting spot is important. CoTA is challenging because the field gets spread out there. You lose the leaders rather quickly, so track position is crucial, especially this year without the yellows after the first and second stages to bunch the field. You don’t know when the next caution’s going to come.”

Last year’s race in Austin marked the NASCAR debut for Garage Oil Spirits, a local distiller founded and co-owned by Ron Stone. This time around, the company has stepped up from a small presence on the rear quarterpanels to a much larger role.

The No. 50 Chevy will feature a distinctive design and eye-catching wrap to help push the company’s whiskey, which is available in over 225 locations in Texas liquor stores, restaurants, nightclubs and resorts. It is also sold in California and Colorado, and the product can be shipped for home delivery in 30 states. Garage Oil was voted the crowd favorite whiskey in its home state at the 5th annual Texas Whiskey Festival.

“This is going to be the first time we take the entire wrap on Preston’s Camaro, and we couldn’t be more proud or pleased with the collaboration between our two BADASS companies,” Stone said. “We just celebrated our first year in business in January, and we are killin’ it. Last year this time, we were only a few months old, and there were only a handful of places in the Austin area where American Badass Whiskey was sold. We’re off and running toward our goal of being one of the most popular whiskey brands in the entire nation within the next couple of years.”

Pardus’ stint behind the wheel this weekend kicks off Friday with a practice session at 5:30 p.m. Central time, followed at 6 o’clock by two rounds of qualifying. Saturday’s action includes a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race, followed by the Pit Boss 250. The weekend is capped off by Sunday’s EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix for the Cup Series.

Zane Smith and No. 38 Speedco/PEAK Ford Team Circuit of the Americas Competition Notes

TEAM AND RACE NOTES:

The Front Row Motorsports (FRM) NASCAR CRAFTSMAN truck team will look to extend their Circuit of the Americas (COTA) undefeated streak this weekend with Speedco and PEAK on the No. 38 Ford F-150.

The NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series has visited COTA twice with FRM taking the checkered flag both times. Todd Gilliland took the win in 2021 with Zane Smith winning last year. FRM has led 19 total laps on the 3.4-mile road course the past two seasons with both wins coming in dramatic fashion. Gilliland came from the back under wet conditions in 2021 and Smith won after passing three trucks in one turn with two laps left last year.

Speedco was riding with Smith when the team won last season and will now welcome PEAK to the No. 38 Ford F-150 for Saturday’s race.

The 42-lap race will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. ET on FS1.

COMPETITION NOTES:

The team will bring the winning chassis from last season back to COTA for Saturday’s race.

Smith and the Speedco/PEAK team are looking to rebound from a 20th-place finish last weekend at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. They are fifth in the regular season points standing coming into COTA.

CREW CHIEF CHRIS LAWSON:

“We’re going to bring the same chassis. We’ve gone through the truck again and built it back up. We expect it to be fast and we’ll let Zane do the rest.”

DRIVER ZANE SMITH:

“Atlanta didn’t go as we wanted at the end, but we had speed. We’ve still had a good start to this season and now it’s time to rebound at COTA. Last year was a lot of fun and want to repeat it and keep this streak going.

“It’s cool to see Speedco and PEAK back on the truck together. We’ve just had a lot of success with Speedco on the truck and it’d be cool to get a win with PEAK.”

The team is racing chassis number 25 this weekend. It’s the first time the team has raced it this season.

“COTA is a world-class facility and I want to get a win there. I’ve spent my time in the simulator preparing for this weekend, but it helps to have practice on Friday. Any track time helps us.

Successful debut weekend for PT Autosport at Sebring

Alex Sedgwick impresses in his Porsche Deluxe Carrera Cup North America debut

SEBRING, Fla. (21 March 2023) – PT Autosport made its Porsche Deluxe Carrera Cup North America debut at Sebring International Raceway this weekend, part of the “Super Sebring” weekend that included the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.

Teaming with defending series champions JDX Racing, PT Autosport had a long list of firsts to take on for the weekend as driver Alex Sedgwick made his IMSA debut on board the No. 98 JDX Racing with PT Autosport Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car.

Sedgwick looked to learn as much as he could, and quickly, as he took on two practice sessions, one chance at qualifying, and two 40-minute races on Thursday that saw the 24-year-old Englishman earn two top 12 finishes – and earn the notice of many in the Porsche paddock.

Mother Nature threw just about every different weather condition possible at the 41-car field through Wednesday’s practice and qualifying sessions. The first practice took the green flag on an uncharacteristically cloudy and chilly morning but Sedgwick managed the changing conditions well, setting the seventh quickest time while posting the most laps in the session (14). In the second practice, he consistently set lap times within a second of the leaders, posting the sixth-fastest time before rain began to fall.

“We decided to do a few laps in the wet to feel out what it was like with the ABS, which will be good experience when we have a rain race later in the year,” said Sedgwick.

By the afternoon’s qualifying session, the more typical warm and humid conditions had returned, though with a slowly warming racetrack surface temperature. Sedgwick gained speed with each lap, reaching fifth position before slotting into the eighth spot on the race one starting grid.

Race One

The green flag flew at 9:15 a.m. EDT under bright blue and sunny skies, with ambient temperatures of 71F and track temps at 61F. The field was tightly bunched through the first few corners and Sedgwick did not have a space to slot into, finding himself shuffled back to 12th position.

On lap seven, Sedgwick threw the car to the outside in turn one and made the ambitious maneuver stick, taking 11th position – and earning significant TV time and kudos from IMSA Radio calling the race. Sedgwick bided his time and then, with 12 minutes remaining, made the move into the top 10 with another solid pass.

In addition to carving his way forward, Sedgwick had to work to avoid the perils that come with close, one-design racing. With eight minutes to go, the two cars ahead of Sedgwick came together, with the lead car spinning away. Sedgwick avoided the combatants and deftly slid into eighth position, holding that position to the checkered flag.

Sedgwick set his quick lap of the race just before the halfway mark, with a lap at 2:03.545.

“I didn’t do as good a job as I could on getting the tires and the brakes up to temp on those early laps, but that will come with experience,” said Sedgwick. “Once the temps and the pace came back, I was able to focus on regaining positions. It’s hard to pass because of the ABS, which minimizes mistakes, so I had to be creative – turns one and 17 are my strongest sectors so I knew I’d have to make a couple of hairy moves to get through. Later in the race, I could see how aggressive the guys were ahead of me, so I had a feeling something was going to happen – glad we weren’t caught up in it!”

Race two

Sedgwick took the green flag from 11th once again, carefully maneuvered his way through the frenetic first lap, losing only one position. Also in a near repeat of the morning, Sedgwick began laying down solid lap times within a second of the leaders and pursuing a spirited battle to retake 11th position. Sedgwick set his quick lap of the race on lap eight with a circuit of 2:04.528.

Throughout the 40-minute race, Sedgwick made every attempt to get past the car ahead, but to no avail – also a hallmark of one-make racing. Despite the race-long attack, Sedgwick settled for a 12th place finish – but with the distinction of bringing home a completely pristine Porsche GT3 Cup car.

“I think after having some time to decompress, I’ll be relatively happy or satisfied at least,” said Sedgwick. “It was a bit of a trial by fire, because it was such a compressed schedule. We were on the back foot after qualifying, which certainly put us back in traffic but that’s part of learning. I’ve been racing stock cars for a while, where you have no aero dependency, so I have more to consider now before making a move. As soon as you get stuck behind someone for a lap or two, like you have to reset and start again.

“But the car ran flawlessly and the JDX team has been amazing – they have a ton of experience. We’re up against a lot of drivers who really know these cars so it’s been really good for me to learn this week. On the whole, a pretty solid debut but definitely room to work on and improve.”

“I am happy with our performance this past weekend and ecstatic about the team we have assembled, starting with the tone from the top in our co-founders – Jason Myers, our team principal, and our first driver partner, Alex Sedgwick,” said Dais. “Alex put his heart out there on the track and gave it his all. We will gather and evaluate our data from this past weekend and strengthen our mindset and resolve heading into the Long Beach race weekend next month.

“Thanks to our support crew at JDX Racing for preparing a competitive car for Alex and our team,” continued Dais. “We are fortunate to be partnered with many seasoned professionals that align with our talent development and competition goals, which include Jeremy Dale and JDX Racing, Byers/Porsche Columbus, Renier Construction, PDCA Marketing, Sunday Group Management and ReVamp Marketing.”

“Our team’s WHY is “Develop Yourself. Impact Others.” We are committed to the development of every member on our team on our team, from our junior members to our co-founders, through top five strengths-based personality goal coaching, holistic health coaching and therapy, and a variety of fitness coaching. We are looking forward to tackling the many challenges to come as our team grows, especially in Alex’s quest competing for the Porsche Deluxe Carrera Cup North America championship!”

The Deluxe Porsche Carrera Cup North America joins the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the NTT INDYCAR SERIES at the legendary Long Beach Grand Prix, with two races on the weekend. Race one takes the green flag Saturday, April 15 at 5:15 p.m. PDT, with race two Sunday at 4:20 p.m. The race will be broadcast live in the U.S., on IMSA.tv, the NBC Peacock streaming app and PorscheCarreraCup.us.

Spencer Boyd To Race Special Paint Scheme Honoring Medal of Honor Recipients

Mooresville, NC (March 21, 2023) – The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Circuit of the Americas will be held on National Medal of Honor Day, March 25, 2023. Boyd’s long-time partner, Sportman’s Choice® & Record Rack (brand owned by Cargill, Inc.), designed a special paint scheme to honor all Medal of Honor Recipients and Vietnam War Veterans while inviting a special family to the race. Gary Michael Rose | Vietnam War | U.S. Army | Medal of Honor Recipient will be the team’s guest of honor along with his grandson, Christian Bowen, who is also a Gold Star son.

“Record Rack is always raising the bar when it comes to honoring our country’s heroes,” beamed driver Spencer Boyd. “When they came to me with this idea it filled my heart just to be a part of it. I’m looking forward to meeting Mike at the track, shaking his hand and saying thank you. I get to race because of men and women like him who have sacrificed so that we have our freedom.”

The recently designated National Vietnam War Veterans Day is just a few days later on March 29.

Gary Michael Rose “Mike” was presented with the Congressional Medal of Honor on October 23, 2017 by President Donald Trump at the White House for his actions that went above and beyond the call of duty while serving as Special Forces Medic. For years we have highlighted our Bucks for the Brave event and this time around we wanted to pay tribute a very distinguished group of individuals. We are honored to be able to bring Mike out to the race to thank him for his service and sacrifice. It will be my honor to say Welcome Home to this man that will represent all Vietnam War Veterans that didn’t receive this respect upon their return.”

The annual Bucks for the Brave charitable event allows Veterans (no longer serving) and retired First Responders (Law Enforcement, Firefighters, EMTs) the chance to win the hunting experience of a lifetime. Notes of Interest

● Truex and the No. 19 Bass Pro Shops Toyota Camry team for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) set the tone for the season right out of the gate by winning the 150-lap feature in the non-points Clash at the Coliseum on Feb. 5. Truex won his heat race, then went on to lead the final 25 laps of the feature en route to the victory.

● Truex has one top-10 finish in the first two races at Circuit of Americas, as he brought home a seventh-place finish there in 2022.

● Road Course Ace: Truex has a total of four wins, 12 top-five, and 17 top-finishes at the three permanent road course venues on the Cup Series schedule at Circuit of Americas, Sonoma (Ca.) Raceway, and Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International. Truex has tallied three wins at Sonoma and one at Watkins Glen.

● Ahead at this Stage: Truex leads the NASCAR Cup Series with 56 stage wins since the beginning of the stage era in 2017. He is the only driver with 10 or more stage sweeps, as well. While Truex came close to winning a stage at the season-opening Daytona 500, he does not have a stage win so far this year. Last weekend at Las Vegas, Truex finished sixth and fourth, respectively, in the opening two stages and collected valuable points that could prove important at the end of the regular season.

● With his 19th-place finish at Atlanta last weekend, Truex heads to the Circuit of Americas eighth in the standings with 145 points, 32 out of the lead

What are your thoughts headed to Austin this weekend based on what you had there last year and what you’ve learned about this car, particularly on road courses?

“COTA is a place that’s pretty fun for us. But last year we just never got the car where we needed it. I was definitely worried after practice – I was not feeling too good. Your hands are so tied to these things with these short practices, so having some time to make bigger changes after practice will be helpful. I’m looking forward to the extra track time on Friday and get a chance to work on it overnight and see what we have for Saturday and Sunday. We’ve learned so much over the last year about this car and what it likes and what it doesn’t, so hoping we can come with a lot more knowledge than we had this time last year and get the car where we need it to have a shot to win and run up front all day long. Looking forward this this weekend with our Bass Pro Shops Toyota team.”

What type of track causes the most chaos in the Cup Series these days?

“The obvious answer to most is the superspeedways and how things happen and how it can take out a lot of cars quickly. However, road course restarts have become the next craziest part of what we do. Looking back at last year, we crashed on one of the restarts with guys going five and six wide and guys make up eight to 10 spots in one corner. I think that’s the biggest change in our sport the last few years.”

They are putting in the choose rule on restarts at the road course starting this year, with COTA being the first race under the new rule. What are your thoughts on adding it to the road courses?

“I don’t think it’s a huge deal anywhere we go, other than tracks that are one lane dominant like a Michigan or a place like that, unless you are in the front two or three rows and that’s where it makes the most difference and that’s probably what will happen on road courses as well and what I would expect this weekend at COTA.”
