Wagner Wins MX-5 Cup Race One at St. Petersburg in Photo Finish

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (March 4, 2023) – In Round Three of the Idemitsu Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich® Tires, Gresham Wagner (No. 5 Spark Performance) and Connor Zilisch (No. 72 Hixon Motor Sports) put on a show for the final lap. The pair traded places and then drag-raced out of the final turn to the finish at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg street circuit.

Starting third on the grid, Wagner took the lead on the first and only restart from yellow, for a stranded car in the first turn. A few laps later, Zilisch was in Wagner’s mirrors and the two pulled away from the rest of the field.

Helping the duo pull away was the scrum for the final podium spot behind them. Thomas Annunziata (No. 10 Hixon Motor Sports) was the first to pull away from that pack, but once Sam Paley (No. 28 McCumbee McAleer Racing) got through, he was hot on Annunziata’s heels.

Near the halfway mark of the 45-minute race, Zilisch took over the lead and Wagner settled into second but was planning his move for the closing laps of the race.

On the penultimate lap, Wagner made the pass and retook the lead. Zilisch stayed glued to his bumper though and in the final corner of the final lap, Zilisch managed to nose inside of Wagner. Zilisch was by Wagner exiting the turn, but the move scrubbed off too much speed for Zilisch. Wagner pulled alongside Zilisch and they drag-raced to the finish line. Wagner crossed the line 0.021-second ahead of Zilisch.

“I messed up on the start there,” Wagner said. “We were down in the paint and everyone’s going into Turn One. Connor (Zilisch) had to kind of get out of the way to keep from crashing. I really appreciate that because he saved both our races on the first lap. I knew I had made a mistake. So, when I saw him [Zilisch] coming, I didn’t fight him too hard. I figured I’d give him his time at the front and let him see what he could do and not race him too hard, especially after he cut me a break at the beginning.

“I knew I had something there at the end,” Wagner said. “I made a couple of mistakes and had to get it back, but I know he [Zilisch] wants to win just as much as me and races just as hard as me. It got physical, but we both finished, one-two as we should have. It’s hard racing and it’s fun racing. There may be a few things that could have gone differently for either of us. At the end of the day, it was a good race one and I look forward to the race this afternoon.”

With the win Wagner nets himself $6,000 from Mazda.

It’s the second time Zilisch has missed a St. Pete win by fractions of a second. Last year, Zilisch finished 0.061-second behind teammate Selin Rollan (No. 87 Hixon Motor Sports). Looking back on his race today, Zilisch acknowledged where he made mistakes and noted that even the smallest mistake has big consequences in MX-5 Cup.

“One of my things in racing, whether it’s karts or cars, whatever I’m racing, I like to take control of the race,” Zilisch said. “Getting to the lead allowed me to do that. It’s harder when you’re behind. If you make a mistake you can lose the front guy, but if you make a mistake out front, you’re able to keep the lead. I like to be in control of the race and just take it in my own hands, that’s kind of the reason I wanted to lead all those laps.”

“I made the mistake when I was leading. I had a bit of a gap with three or four to go and in just one corner I made a tiny mistake and that’s all it takes when you’re racing someone as good as Gresham. He got to my bumper and I should have protected, that’s my fault. I should have stayed in control, but I gave him the lead. Then on the last lap, I gave him what he gave me, so I gave him a bumper and we just weren’t able to get the run to the line. P2 isn’t that bad, you always want to win. I’m here to win, I’m not here to go for a championship. We’ll go in for Race Two and hopefully capitalize on someone else’s mistakes and be able to win.”

In the fight for third, Annunziata and Paley were eventually joined by Aaron Jeansonne (No. 24 JTR Motorsports Engineering). Paley made his way past Annunziata with 12 minutes to go. Annunziata’s fight with Jeansonne gave Paley the slightest of breathing room to come home in the final podium spot.

“Unfortunately, I was too conservative at the beginning and there’s just too big of a gap in order to make it up,” Paley said. “At the end, we had a good car and really worked hard to run down Thomas [Annunziata] and then kind of ran out a car and just held on at the end, but I think we had the speed to be there, so thanks to McCumbee McAleer Racing.

“For the race this afternoon, I think that it’s really hard to pass here and it’s really easy to defend, so I need to definitely be more aggressive early on getting those moves done early in the race this afternoon. Considering everyone’s schedules and conflicts, I think we’re really in it for the championship. Unfortunately, we had an unlucky race two with a DNF at Daytona, but every race we finished so far this year, we got a podium. So I’m happy.”

Jeansonne finished fourth and Annunziata, the highest finishing rookie, was fifth.

Finishing 19th, Heather Hadley (No. 54 Spark Performance) was the highest placed female driver and earned herself $2,000 from Mazda.

Race Two in St. Petersburg will take place at 4:45pm ET. A livestream is available on RACER.com.

GMS Racing NCTS Race Recap: Las Vegas

Grant Enfinger, No. 23 Champion Power Equipment Chevrolet Silverado RST

START: 16TH
FINISH: 9TH
POINTS: 6TH

Post-Race Quote: “A ninth place run wasn’t what we were after tonight, but we showed a lot of promise from our truck and team. Our Champion Power Equipment team was able to rebound significantly from where we were at in qualifying, and it felt like every change Jeff made helped us get faster each run. Unfortunately, we lost a lot of time in the last run of the race due to some mistakes I had on pit road and we weren’t able to capitalize on others’ misfortunes, but all in all I’d say it was a decent night. There’s no quit in this team and on the bright side, we do have a lot to build off of for Atlanta and beyond. Wish we could have given Maury a better finish at his home race, but we’ll take the extra stage points on top of another top 10 finish and move forward.”

Rajah Caruth, No. 24 Wendell Scott Foundation Chevrolet Silverado RST

START: 24TH
FINISH: 29TH
POINTS: 18TH

Post-Race Quote: “Today at Las Vegas, I had a lot of fun racing these trucks in traffic. These NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series competitors are really good. We got great stage points in the first two stages and made the most of our strategy there. We were sitting just outside or around the top-10 just before the green flag stop. Got hit coming in and it kind of ruined our night, cut a tire, and the pass through penalties we had to endure didn’t help. It was an unfortunate end to our night, but we got some solid points and our truck is not too badly torn up. I’m thankful for all my partners and I plan to do really well in Atlanta. I have my eyes set there, and I am excited for the road course race coming up.”

Daniel Dye, No. 43 Solar-Fit / Halifax Health Chevrolet Silverado RST

START: 20TH
FINISH: 19TH
POINTS: 19TH

Post-Race Quote: “Overall, it was a rough night. Just needed a little luck on our side; we had a right rear tire come apart early which put us behind the right ball, but we fought back and even got to lead a couple laps there towards the end with pit strategy. We salvaged a top-20, and don’t have a whole lot to hang our heads on considering all we had to deal with. Proud of all of the guys on my No. 43 Solar-Fit / Halifax Health Chevrolet Silverado, and we’re going to regroup and get back going here in Atlanta in a couple weeks.”

27th – Mason Massey
32nd – Hailie Deegan

BEN RHODES, No. 99 Kubota Ford F-150 (Finished 3rd) – “As we went on I just got too tight in almost every run. Part of that is on me. I wanted to make sure we were okay on restarts because of how crazy it is here. I think we all saw the entertainment value in that. We had some close calls but nevertheless this Kubota Tractor Corporation Ford F-150 is still in one piece and we are able to take it on to the next race. Third place is a good showing but I was wanting a little bit more. We had to finish out Stage 2 for points where a lot of guys like Kyle (Busch) and Zane (Smith) were short pitting. It helps them get the track position so we had a lot more work to do but we need the stage points. It is a long season and some guys don’t have to do that. We didn’t have that luxury of short pitting.”

ZANE SMITH, No. 38 Speedco Ford F-150 (Finished 2nd) – “I was happy with our day. We had a really good Speedco Ford. I was happy with our Stage win. We got shuffled back there on one of those late race restarts and then just kind of let Kyle (Busch) get away. It is so hard to execute pit road when facing him. I am still happy with our day. Another good points day. We will carry this momentum and go on to the next one.”

TY MAJESKI, No. 98 Curb Records Ford F-150 (Finished 5th) – “I wish we could have gotten a caution there. I had a really fast truck. We had a pit road penalty that set us back at the end of Stage 2 and then it went green to the end. We drove from last all the way to fifth. I felt like we could have contended maybe for a win. It didn’t go our way tonight but overall a really fast Curb Records Ford F-150. Hats off to Joe and all the guys. We really took everything that we learned last year and applied it to here and the speed was there. I am excited for the rest of the season with this group. It is going to be a good one.”

MATT CRAFTON, No. 88 Slim Jim/Menards Ford F-150 (Finished 11th) – “Definitely not the night we wanted. After practice, we had a lot of positives in practice but then didn’t qualify very well. We never really had the speed in the truck that we had earlier in practice for whatever reason. We fought tight all night. We kept working on it and made a lot of wholesale changes but didn’t get where we needed it to go. This is a really weird race night. It basically became a speedway race, running around wide open every lap. As a race car driver, that is not very fun.”

TOYOTA QUOTES

COREY HEIM, No. 11 Safelite Toyota Tundra TRD Pro, TRICON Garage

Finishing Position: 4th

How was your race overall tonight?

“Overall, good. It’s a new team with TRICON and I really appreciate everyone over at the shop at TRICON Garage and Toyota Racing, Safelite and everyone that makes this happen. Got some work to do for sure to compete for wins. The 51 (Kyle Busch) was pretty much untouchable tonight. Just can’t stress it enough, awesome job by my guys, they’ve put in a lot of work and hoping to get this Safelite Tundra in victory lane soon.”

What did you feel you need to work on moving forward on intermediate tracks?

“I think just some differences from what I felt last year. There is definitely a lot of potential. Finishing fourth on our first true testament to speed as far as an intermediate race track goes, which is Las Vegas of course. There was some stuff that I felt that I really know we can make some progress on and I have a lot of confidence that we can get there.”

And his success doesn’t stop there.

Kyle Busch wins the Craftsman Truck Series Victoria’s Voice Foundation 200 at Las Vegas

Photo by Ron Olds for SpeedwayMedia.com.

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway was run Friday night. It was an exciting race with a large amount of room for the cars to race three and even 4-wide for the lead.

Kyle Busch had early tire issues but would easily overcome them and wheel his No.51 Kyle Busch Motorsports Chevrolet to victory lane. He led 84 of 134 laps and claimed his fourth career Truck Series win at his home track. It was his 63rd win in the series.

“Thank you guys, thank all the fans, thank you for coming out tonight,” Busch commented. “Rowdy Nation getting loud, it’s a lot of fun in just the Truck Series, I appreciate that.” He added, “It’s an honor to come out with KBM, my own team and have some fun and just kinda work on stuff.”

Busch will also be competing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race on Saturday and the NASCAR Cup Series on Sunday for a tripleheader weekend.

Zane Smith brought his No.38 Front Row Motorsports Ford home in second place.

“I’m happy with our day,” Smith said. “We had a really good Speedco Ford, happy with our stage win. Got shuffled back there in one of those late-race restarts and just kind of let Kyle get away, and it’s so hard executing pit road chasing him.” He added, “I’m still happy with our day, another good points day.”

Finishing in third place was driver Ben Rhodes in his No. 99 Thor Sport Racing. Rhodes also battled up front going back and forth for the lead.

“We ended up getting some good stage points in stage two today, and then a good finish here tonight. All in all, I’m proud of the effort from my guys, a nice stable fast truck.”

Stage 1 – Busch started from the pole position but then had tire issues causing him to pit out of order with the other drivers. There was only one caution and that was when Bret Holmes tagged the wall. Zane Smith, who started with a fast car, would also win the stage.

Stage 2 – We saw Carson Hocevar running up front leading the pack. Even with a few minor cautions, he was strong enough to maintain the lead, easily winning stage 2.

Final Stage – The final stage had no cautions and Busch was the hands-down winner. There was just no one there that could touch him.

Corey Heim and Ty Majeski would round out the top five. Christian Eckes, Hocevar, Chase Purdy, Grand Enfinger, and Jake Garcia finished sixth through 10, respectively.

Rhodes currently leads the point standings by two points over Ty Majeski.

The NASCAR Truck Series will head next to Atlanta Motor Speedway on Saturday, March 18.

LAS VEGAS—Kyle Busch revels in changing circumstances.

Five days after winning at Auto Club Speedway in his second NASCAR Cup Series race in a Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet, Busch powered his own Kyle Busch Motorsports Chevy to victory in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series.

Despite a couple of twitchy moments in traffic, Busch dominated Friday night’s Victoria’s Voice Foundation 200 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, leading 84 of 134 laps and beating runner-up Zane Smith to the finish line by 4.981 seconds.

The victory was Busch’s first of the season, the fourth at his home track and the 63rd of his career, extending his own series record.

After a restart on Lap 66, Busch stormed into the lead two circuits later and built an advantage that, at its widest, exceeded seven seconds. It was his first race in the No. 51 truck after KBM switched from Toyota to Chevrolet for the 2023 season.

Friday’s victory was the first in a potential weekend triple. Busch is competing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series on Saturday and the NASCAR Cup Series on Sunday.

“There were a couple dicey moments in traffic—not too bad—but I would have loved to have raced with Zane,” said Busch, who won the pole in Friday afternoon’s qualifying session. “They kind of got off strategy where we were able to cycle up , and we got clean air for most of the start of that last run.

“He came through the field and got to second, and we kind of maintained. If we’d have been able to race it out, it would have been a hell of a show. But all in all, just a great night here, to be able to win in Las Vegas again—and you’ve got to win the first to be able to win all three. Right?”

Smith, the reigning series champion, won the race’s first stage and led eight laps.

“I’m happy with our day,” Smith said. “We had a really good Speedco Ford. Happy with our stage win. Got shuffled back there in one of those late-race restarts and just kind of let Kyle get away—and it’s so hard executing pit road chasing him.

“Still happy with our day—another good points day. Create some momentum and go on to the next one.”

Ben Rhodes ran third, followed by Corey Heim and Ty Majeski. Christian Eckes, second stage winner Carson Hocevar, Chase Purdy, Grant Enfinger and rookie Jake Garcia completed the top 10.

Fifth-place qualifier Hailie Deegan crashed out in a backstretch wreck with John Hunter Nemechek and Ross Chastain on Lap 60 to cause the sixth and final caution of the race.

Hendrick Motorsports statement on Chase Elliott

CONCORD, N.C. (March 3, 2023) – Chase Elliott, driver of the No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for Hendrick Motorsports, will not compete in this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway due to a leg injury.

Elliott, the 2020 Cup Series champion, suffered the injury to his left leg today while snowboarding in Colorado. He is scheduled to undergo surgery this evening.

Josh Berry, 32, will fill in for Elliott in Sunday’s event at Las Vegas. Driving for Hendrick Motorsports affiliate JR Motorsports, he is a five-time race winner in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. The Hendersonville, Tennessee, native has made two previous starts at the Cup level.

“Chase’s health is our primary concern,” said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. “He’s spoken with several members of our team and is understandably disappointed to miss time in the car. Of course, he has our full support, and we’ll provide any resources he needs. We hope to share another update later this weekend.”

Dixon Leads Ganassi Charge to Top of Time Sheet in St. Pete

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Friday, March 3, 2023) – It’s hard to believe, but none of legendary six-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Scott Dixon’s 53 career wins have come on the streets of St. Petersburg.

That might change Sunday, if the results of the opening practice Friday are any indication.

Dixon was quickest during the opening practice session of the 2023 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season, turning a top lap of 1 minute, 1.6145 seconds in the No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. Dixon will look to take the top step of the podium in the race Sunday (noon ET, NBC, Peacock, Telemundo Deportes on Universo, INDYCAR Radio Network) after four second-place and two third-place career finishes at this event.

“The first session was a little messy,” Dixon said. “The session ran really long, an hour and 15 minutes, which was good. A couple sets of tires for most of the field. We ended up at the top, which is a nice way to start the weekend. Now the tough part is trying to stay there.”

Up next on the 14-turn, 1.8-mile temporary street circuit is practice at 10 a.m. ET Saturday, followed by NTT P1 Award qualifying at 2:15 p.m., with live coverage of both sessions on Peacock.

It was a strong start to the season for Chip Ganassi Racing and Andretti Autosport, whose drivers took the top four spots.

2021 St. Petersburg winner Colton Herta was second overall with a top time of 1:01.6475 in the No. 26 Gainbridge Honda fielded by Andretti Autosport. 2021 season champion Alex Palou ended up third at 1:01.6790 in the No. 10 The American Legion Honda fielded by CGR.

Kyle Kirkwood produced a strong start to his Andretti Autosport career in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES by placing fourth at 1:01.6851 in the No. 27 AutoNation Honda. Kirkwood drove for AJ Foyt Racing last season as a rookie before returning to the team with which he won the INDY NXT by Firestone championship in 2021.

2016 series champion Simon Pagenaud rounded out the top five at 1:01.6963 in the No. 60 AutoNation/SiriusXM Honda fielded by Meyer Shank Racing despite stopping on course just shy of halfway into the 75-minute session.

Rinus VeeKay was the quickest Chevrolet-powered driver, sixth at 1:01.8514 in the No. 21 Bitnile.com Chevrolet of Ed Carpenter Racing. Marcus Armstrong was the quickest of the four rookies in the field, ninth at 1:01.9444 in the No. 11 Ridgeline Lubricants Chip Ganassi Racing Honda.

2022 St. Petersburg race winner Scott McLaughlin was one of a handful of veteran and rookie drivers who encountered problems between the unforgiving concrete walls of the circuit, which includes the streets of St. Petersburg and a runway at Albert Whitted Airport. McLaughlin was 10th overall at 1:01.9882 in the No. 3 DEX Imaging Team Penske Chevrolet despite brushing the wall and damaging a toe link during the session, forcing repairs in the pits.
