Abel Leads Rough-and-Tumble Opening Practice at St. Petersburg

Abel Leads Rough-and-Tumble Opening Practice at St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Friday, March 3, 2023) – Jacob Abel drives for one of the smallest teams in INDY NXT by Firestone, but he produced the biggest lap to lead the opening practice of the 2023 season Friday afternoon in the INDY NXT by Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

Series veteran Abel, from Louisville, Kentucky, topped the time charts in a session interrupted by two crashes with a best lap of 1 minute, 6.3288 seconds in the No. 51 Abel Motorsports car. He ended up .0364 of a second ahead of rookie Nolan Siegel, who was second overall at 1:06.3652 in the No. 39 HMD Motorsports with DCR car.

This session started a new era for INDYCAR’s development series, which features a new name and has switched to Firestone tires starting in 2023.

“It was really good,” Abel said. “This Firestone tire is going to be really, really interesting. We didn’t get much time on it in the preseason, so I think a lot of people are going to be learning as the year goes on. Definitely off to a good start, and we’ll see if we can keep it up.”

INDY NXT by Firestone drivers will be on track next at 9 a.m. ET Saturday, followed by qualifying at 1:35 p.m. on the 14-turn, 1.8-mile street circuit that includes the downtown asphalt streets of St. Petersburg and a concrete runway at Albert Whitted Airport. The race starts at 9:50 a.m. Sunday, with live coverage on Peacock and the INDYCAR Radio Network.

Rasmus Lindh ended up third in practice Friday with a top lap of 1:06.4386 in the No. 10 HMD Motorsports with DCR car. Lindh returns to INDY NXT for a full season after last competing in the series in a partial campaign in 2021.

Series veteran Danial Frost was fourth at 1:06.5038 in the No. 68 HMD Motorsports with DCR car. Another series veteran, Kyffin Simpson, rounded out the top five at 1:06.5232 in the No. 21 HMD Motorsports with CGR car.

Less than one second separated the top 15 drivers in the session, setting the stage for a tight chase for the pole in qualifying Saturday.

Today’s practice started in choppy fashion due to two early crashes by leading returning drivers in the series.

Christian Rasmussen, who finished sixth in the standings last season, saw his session end when his No. 6 HMD Motorsports with DCR car crashed into the barrier in Turn 4 just five minutes into the session.

“I just kind of lost the rear into Turn 4 and don’t have a complete answer on what happened yet,” Rasmussen said. “We’ll get the car back out there, and hopefully we’ll get some more laps in the next practice.”

Just two minutes after the track reopened following Rasmussen’s crash, Hunter McElrea made hard contact with the barrier in Turn 3 in his No. 27 Smart Motors car fielded by Andretti Autosport. McElrea, the series’ 2022 Rookie of the Year after finishing fourth in points last season, was done for the session.

Confessed Bristol Dirt-lover Ben Rhodes Looking For More Success On Clay High Banks

Craftsman Truck Series returns to dirt-covered Bristol Motor Speedway for WEATHER GUARD® Truck Race on Dirt April 8

BRISTOL, Tenn. (March 3, 2023) – With a victory and a second-place finish in his two NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series starts at dirt-covered Bristol Motor Speedway, Ben Rhodes said last year that he really enjoys racing on the clay version of the World’s Fastest Half-Mile.

In fact, he grabbed everyone’s attention when he boldly stated that he prefers Dirt Bristol to Concrete Bristol.

Wait. What?

“I really enjoy it,” Rhodes said. “I might be the only one that thinks this, but I enjoy the dirt in Bristol more than the concrete actually.”

It’s one of the reasons why Rhodes is among the favorites to win this season’s WEATHER GUARD® Truck Race on Dirt, Saturday night, April 8 at Bristol Motor Speedway. The highly-anticipated NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race is scheduled to take the green flag at 8 p.m. and will be broadcast live on FS1 and on MRN Radio.

The veteran driver and former series champ says the Bristol dirt configuration really fits his style of racing, and during his Bristol career on concrete, his best effort has been a fifth place finish in eight career starts.

“Well, my record wasn’t the best here on the concrete,” Rhodes said with a grin. “I think (dirt) is a whole lot of fun. I love that you can throw the truck into the corners, and you will have the banking to catch you.”

Rhodes said despite not having much of a background in dirt racing, for some reason he had an instant feel for racing on dirt at Bristol. He said it was a better fit for him than some of the other dirt tracks the series has visited.

“When you just start sliding and sliding and sliding, I mean, some people like that, but I don’t,” Rhodes explained. “My feel is when I throw it in there, I want to know I’ve got something to lean on and the banking provides that. I’ve never experienced that before. Eldora – it had banking, but not like this. Knoxville, it would take rubber, but it doesn’t just grab the truck and help you through the corner.”

The Kentucky racer quickly adapted to the style of racing that dirt-covered Bristol demanded at the controls of his No. 99 Thorsport Truck in 2021 when he finished second to eventual winner Martin Truex Jr. He led three laps of that race and ran up front most of the day.

Last year Rhodes had the fastest truck in the field but thought he had thrown the race away in the final stage after winning the first two. After leading the first 91 laps, Rhodes found himself in 13th place after he had to pit at the end of Stage 2. Due to a miscommunication he missed the entrance to pit road and failed to pit after winning Stage 1.

Carson Hocevar took the lead on lap 92 and led the race until the hard-charging Rhodes filled his rearview mirror as the laps counted down.

“I kept looking up in the mirror hoping and man, he’s fifth and he really can’t go anywhere and once I knew he was fourth, I was like ‘Oh, I’m in trouble here,” Hocevar said. “He slide-jobbed me and I should have prepared for it, crossed him over and raced him really hard.”

Hocevar said he didn’t have much choice once Rhodes caught him and made his move to pass for the lead with four laps to go in the race. The late race drama put the Bristol crowd on its feet.

“I should’ve either ripped the top or crashed him,” Hocevar said. “I hate saying that, but it’s part of racing, right? I just couldn’t compete with him. He had better tires and he was the fastest truck all day. I was just trying to hold on. Second sucks. It’s terrible, especially being that close.”

Rhodes, who led a race-best 95 laps in taking the victory, was relieved after working his way back to the front. He thought his chance to win was all but over after his earlier miscue.

“I thought we gave it away for a moment,” Rhodes said. “Coming back through the pack like that was really, really tough. It wasn’t something we wanted to do. My crew gave me such an awesome truck that I wasn’t going to let them down. I had to go back up there and earn that spot back.

“I knew we had the truck to beat, we just had to get there.”

The Bristol race weekend is highlighted by the NASCAR Cup Series returning to its roots with the Food City Dirt Race on Sunday evening, April 9 (7 p.m., FOX and PRN Radio). The WEATHER GUARD® Truck Race on Dirt will be preceded by Bush’s Beans Qualifying (4:30 p.m., FS1), which offers four heat races in each series to set the starting lineups. On Friday, teams in both the Cup Series and Craftsman Truck Series will be able to fine-tune their machines during Bush’s Beans Practice Day (5:30 p.m., FS1).

In addition to cheering on their favorite drivers this weekend, Bristol Motor Speedway fans will definitely want to take advantage of so many activities to make a complete weekend of family fun. There will be great video entertainment provided by Colossus TV, the world’s largest center-hung video screen, premium VIP experiences like the Super Fan Suites, tailgating, a visit to the BMS Kids Zone, BMS Fan Zone and Fan Midway, on-site camping, concerts and other entertainment at the Food City Fan Zone Stage like the Race Day Revival with Kenny Wallace and John Roberts, great food and beverages in the concession stands throughout the property, and so much more.

PT Autosport Launches Porsche Deluxe Carrera Cup North America Program

The new team partners with JDX Racing and looks to form an in-house driver and team development system, with the U.S. series as the target destination to establish a race car driver’s career in professional motorsports.

MILLVILLE, NJ (3 March, 2023) – PT Autosport brings its program of diversity and opportunity to the 2023 Porsche Deluxe Carrera Cup North America series, partnering with JDX Racing to field a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car for racer Alex Sedgwick.

Team owner Jeph Dais, co-founder/team principal Jason Myers and Sedgwick formed the team with a mission statement dedicated to giving young racers the opportunity to chase their motorsports dreams, forming an in-house ladder system for drivers, engineers, mechanics and business professionals. Fostering an environment focused on learning and developing race craft on and off track is at the core of the team’s endeavors.

Both Dais and Myers have significant youth and young adult mentoring experience and have seen the positive effects first-hand. Dais, a Hoboken, NJ resident, has over 15+ years of operations experience in the finance industry and has been involved with the youth mentoring program, DeMolay International, since the age of 12. Myers, currently living in Charleston, SC, spent eight years in the Marine Corps with three tours in Iraq before he entered the motorsports world, working with private and manufacturer-backed teams for the past 15 years. During that time, he became a peer-to-peer counselor with the VA and a volunteer mentor for veteran-based nonprofit organizations.

Co-Founder Sedgwick, 24, a native of Warwickshire, England, came up through the karting ranks and has driven a wide range of race cars – including GT cars, prototypes, single seaters, stock cars and touring cars. He also has extensive experience as a driver coach, but it was his work with a European driving tour company that actually led him back to racing – and to PT Autosport.

“With so few available opportunities, I had moved away from racing at this time last year,” said Sedgwick. “I worked as an operations manager with Ultimate Driving Tours on an event last year that was a driving tour through Europe and ending with an event at the Monaco Grand Prix. Jason was on the tour and we got on really well. I got a message from him the following week telling me that Jeph had bought a Porsche Cup car and would I come to NJMP to coach him? The more we started talking, the more we started coming up with a concept of what we could do together, what we could build.”

Part one of the team’s master plan was their shootout last November, designed to find a deserving young driver to start his or her journey up the racing ladder. The inaugural winner was 22-year-old Londoner Henry Drury, but the former competitive figure skater has been sidelined after artificial disc replacement surgery late last year. Undeterred, Drury, who lives in Tampa, Fla., has remained a part of the team, working on marketing and social media until he can return to the car.

“Henry won the shootout based on his talents and performance, but it’s been a stroke of luck that he has the marketing skillset as well!” said Sedgwick. “As we get into the race season, he’ll be working on videography and social media, but we’ve got a tentative schedule for him across a variety of series later in the spring and summer once he completes his recovery.”

The team considers part two of that plan to be establishing the PT Autosport name at a high level in the sport alongside 2022 champions JDX Racing. They will have IMSA’s two-day test March 6 and 7 to shake out the brand-new No. 98 Porsche Cup car and gel with the new team ahead of the race weekend. It’s a tight schedule, but Sedgwick feels confident.

“My whole racing career has been about jumping in and figuring it out,” said Sedgwick. “We had an exploratory test with JDX in November, so we have a baseline, and I know we’ll hit the ground running. It has been a very natural partnership with JDX – we’re all focused on being as competitive as possible!”

“With JDX, we couldn’t have picked a more established or accomplished team to help us campaign the series with Alex in 2023. We have been impressed with their professionalism and competitiveness from the start,” said Myers. “PT Autosport was nothing more than an idea until June of last year, and because of that, we needed an established, top-level team to help start our first real season in professional sports car racing. So far we have achieved every milestone set forth, taking a lean, calculated approach as we jump-start a professional level sports car racing team with the main goal of helping expand and enrich this incredible industry with drivers, engineers and crew who might not otherwise have had or known about the opportunities within the motorsport community.”

To that end, part three of the plan will be to continue the annual shootout concept, with the 2023 edition scheduled for August. PT Autosport aims to continue building out the program, working to identify a second junior driver to develop and compete alongside Drury as well as fleshing out the team to support that racing program.

“That will provide more opportunity to find deserving individuals the chance to get involved in racing,” said Sedgwick. “We don’t want just to be a race team and that side of it is really exciting.”

With payment solutions and business technology giant Deluxe as the series’ title sponsor, the domestic Carrera Cup enters its third season with a stellar lineup of race venues. Eight race weekends will host two 40-minute races at some of the top IMSA tracks in the country, including Sebring, Long Beach, Watkins Glen, Indianapolis, and Road Atlanta. The series will also join the Formula One Grand Prix circuit at two of its United States stops, Miami and Austin, Texas, and be the headline racing event at the Porsche Rennsport Reunion VII in Monterey, California.

The 2023 Deluxe Porsche Carrera Cup North America makes its season debut at Sebring International Raceway March 16 and 17, as part of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring weekend. Race one takes the green flag Thursday, March 16 at 9:15 a.m. Eastern, with race two later that afternoon, at 5:35 p.m. The race will be broadcast live in the U.S., on IMSA.tv, the NBC Peacock streaming app and PorscheCarreraCup.us.

Dakota Dickerson Joins Jr III Racing Sebring 12 Hour Lineup

Mooresville, NC (3 March 2023) – Having raced to a podium in his IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship debut with Jr III (“Junior-Three”) Racing, Dakota Dickerson will rejoin the team for the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. The IMSA Prototype Challenge 2021 Champion will join Jr III Racing regulars Ari Balogh and Garett Grist in the No. 30 Airbnb Ligier JS P320 for the team’s first IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship start of the 2023 season.

The young California native has built an impressive resume since starting his career in open-wheel competition. Dickerson claimed the IMSA Prototype Challenge title in 2021 with five consecutive podium appearances in the LMP3 class category, including a victory at Watkins Glen International.

Dickerson also earned accolades with a title run to the 2018 F4 United States Championship and followed that with a FR Americas championship run in 2019.

“I’m super excited to be back with Jr III Racing!” said Dickerson. “I had my first IMSA WeatherTech start with these guys last year, and we ended up on the podium. These guys are a giant family, and it feels great to be reunited with them. It will be nice to drive with Ari (Balogh) and Garett (Grist) again, they have been awesome about welcoming me to the team. They had a great season finishing third in points standings last year, and I think we will gain momentum from there.”

“We are thrilled to have Dakota back with us at Sebring,” said Billy Glavin, owner of Jr III Racing. “Dakota was with us last year for our first Twelve Hours of Sebring, and we were able to take home a second-place finish. He has the speed and has proven that racing with us last year and in the Prototype Challenge in previous years. The team is excited to have him back for another go at the top step!”

Hollywood Star Simu Liu to Super-Charge Season Opener

INDIANAPOLIS (Friday, March 3, 2023) – Simu Liu, the groundbreaking star of Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings,” will ride in the Fastest Seat in Sports at the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg presented by RP Funding, leading the full field of drivers to the green flag of the season-opening NTT INDYCAR SERIES race Sunday, March 5.

The live telecast of the race on the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida, will start at noon ET on NBC, Peacock and Telemundo Deportes on Universo.

INDYCAR’s Fastest Seat in Sports is a high-speed, high-octane, super-charged thrill ride in a custom INDYCAR SERIES car with a special back passenger seat. At almost every race on the schedule, the car advances the field of drivers to the start/finish line to signify the beginning of the race, with a special passenger in the guest seat. Previous participants in the Fastest Seat in Sports include Lady Gaga, NBA champions Steph Curry and Kawhi Leonard, actor Channing Tatum and many others.

The NTT INDYCAR SERIES represents the ultimate challenge in racing, with drivers competing at speeds of 200+ mph across a demanding set of ovals and road and street courses. The race for the championship begins this weekend on the sunny city streets of St. Petersburg.

Liu made history as the lead of the first Asian-fronted movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which earned him the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Action Movie Star.

For five seasons, Liu starred in the CBC/Netflix comedy series “Kim’s Convenience,” which won the ACTRA Awards for Outstanding Ensemble in 2017 and was also nominated for the same award in 2018.

He most recently completed production on Greta Gerwig’s feature “Barbie” for Warner Bros. opposite Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling and will next star alongside Mark Wahlberg in “Arthur the King” and on the film adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s bestseller “One True Loves” opposite Phillipa Soo.

Liu’s New York Times best-selling memoir, “We Were Dreamers: An Immigrant Superhero Origin Story,” was released by Harper Collins last May. He also was named as one of “The World’s Most Influential People” in June 2022 by TIME magazine.

Teenager George Phillips Teams Up with Setzer Racing for CARS Tour 2023 Endeavor

CONCORD, N.C.: (March 3, 2023): It was announced today that George Phillips will join forces with Setzer Racing and Development for the CARS Tour Late Model Series and will pilot the No. 6 Chevrolet.

The move comes with a little motivation from a dear friend Humpy Wheeler, who believes in Phillips and has mentored him for the past few years.

Phillips has accomplished many feats in the U.S. Legend Car Series and the move up was inevitable. The Legend Car Series is a major stepping stone in a young driver’s career and development.

“The time I spent racing all kinds of different tracks in my Legend car really helped me get prepared to make the transition to Late Models,” said Phillips.

“We are very excited to have George behind the wheel for us this year,” Brandon Setzer said. “We have watched him have success at the Legend Car level and can’t wait to see what he can do in our Late Model.”

The 14-year-old has had amazing success in the Legend Car Series claiming victories at Atlanta Motor Speedway’s quarter and third-mile tracks as well as claiming a win at Charlotte’s Summer Shootout.

Phillips won the biggest race in Carteret County Speedway history, the 50-lap, $2,500 Race of Champions on December 10, 2022.

For young drivers, today to make that advanced move into Late Models is a little more strategic than in the past. To be able to set forth a full series schedule one must take on a business roll to concrete the deals. Landing sponsorship is huge and securing a well-blanched team for your driver is.

When it came to choosing a team Setzer Racing and Development seemed to be the right fit.

“I am so honored to work with Brandon and Dennis Setzer and this whole team,” explained Phillips. “I really feel like I have the very best team and to be their driver is a huge blessing. Dennis and Brandon know the car inside and out and are great teachers.

They both are incredibly decorated and talented drivers, he said. I would like to thank Dennis and Brandon and the whole team for believing in me to pilot their Pro Late Model.”

As he transitions to the full-size stock car, the team has had several practice and track development days over the past few months. The goal is to develop communications, advance skills and win races.

Setzer Racing and Development has had great success over the past few years with young drivers making the decision for Phillips relatively easy.

“We are very excited to help with George’s transition from Legend to a full-body late model,” added Setzer. “George has shown good speed and decision-making in the legend car that will transfer over well to the late models. We look forward to fine-tuning the skill set he already has and applying it to the full-body car.”

A big transition for a young driver, but Setzer has a great approach.

“I think it’s important to keep the expectations simple for a young driver just getting started. The goal is to get better at every race and learn from any mistakes. George has the speed to run up and compete for wins. It’s our job to help him hone his race craft and keep mistakes at a minimum and results will come from that.”

Phillips and his team were able to secure marketing partners with The Racing Warehouse and Simpson Racing Products — with a few more coming on board in the next few weeks.

“We are very happy to be working with these great marketing partners as we believe in their products as a team and a family in this sport,” sounded Phillips. “I will continue to fly the Ross & Witmer banner as well for the 2023 season.”

But so much serious business… where’s the fun? Well, Phillips lives and breathes racing and NASCAR.

He, like most drivers, has their heroes of our sport, yet Phillips, well he has a few and is somewhat of a master NASCAR historian.

He has his own museum with jaw-dropping memorabilia and to add to the drive of history, one of his favorites of all time, Bobby Isaac.

“I have been a Bobby Isaac fan since I was nine years old,” Phillips explained. “We were born on the same day decades apart. The admiration is there for what he accomplished; I am so excited to have my shot at Hickory just like he did. This track is rich with history.”

In addition to the CARS Tour, Phillips is set to make is Late Model debut this Saturday at Hickory Motor Speedway in the Carolina Pro Late Models.

His support system is one of great influence and trust. He has established and built some amazing relationships in auto racing.

“I have some extra special friends that have been incredible mentors to me,” sounded Phillips. “Humpy Wheeler is my hero, he always makes time for me and comes out to watch me practice. Jeff Gordon and John Bickford, I would not even be at this point if it were not for them. I can always count on both of them to shoot me straight. Lorin Ranier also has been helping me for the past two years and believing in me.

“Joey Bishop has always reminded me to have fun. And “Jazzy Jazz” Kirkly and Dexter “Loveboat” Williams, they motivate me to always pursue my dreams. They are all amazing blessings in my life.”

As the saying goes, “it takes a village” and George has an amazing village of support from the outside.

His home village is just as meaningful.

“Most of all I would like to thank God for making all things possible,” offered Phillips. “Making this possible for me. Also, thank you mom and dad and my little sister Dottie Collins who are always there for me.”

Formula One winner Heikki Kovalainen joins JBXE to partner Hedda Hosås for Extreme E Season 3

3 March 2023, London: Former Formula One winner Heikki Kovalainen has signed for JBXE to drive alongside Hedda Hosås for Extreme E Season 3.

After finishing third in Season 1, Jenson Button’s outfit dropped to ninth in the standings last term – despite securing a podium finish in NEOM Island X Prix I. JBXE will be aiming to bounce back with their new driver line-up in 2023 with their Nordic duo behind the wheel.

Jenson Button, Team Owner of JBXE, said: “Delighted to be announcing Heikki as our new male driver and also to have Hedda continue with the team! To bring such an established name from the world of motorsport and someone I had the pleasure of racing against in Formula One is brilliant for the team and the series.

“Following his move into the world of rally, it was a no brainer for the team to approach him and I’m over the moon he’s agreed to join the team and equally delighted to be keeping Hedda after she has continued to make great progress in the car, she fully deserves her place.”

Kovalainen secured his single career victory at the 2008 Hungarian Grand Prix, becoming the 100th driver to win a Formula One race. The 41-year-old becomes the fourth F1 name to enter Extreme E as he joins team owners Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg and Jenson Button, with whom he is all too familiar.

In his early career, the Finn finished runner-up in the Formula One junior series, GP2, behind Rosberg, while he was a team-mate to Hamilton when competing for McLaren in Formula One during 2008 and 2009 – claiming his sole victory and pole position for the team which now also contests in Extreme E.

Kovalainen raced in Formula One from 2007 to 2013, where as well as McLaren, the Finn represented Renault, Team Lotus, Caterham and Lotus F1 Team, securing four podiums in total.

Following his success in Formula One, Kovalainen switched to the Japanese Super GT series in 2015, winning the championship a year later before changing lanes to take on the world of off-road motorsport full-time.

Driving for JBXE this season will not be Kovalainen’s first outing in off-road racing. That moment came when Kovalainen competed in the Race of Champions (ROC), a feat he would take on five times between 2004 and 2010. His debut saw Kovalainen overcome motorsport legends David Coulthard, Jean Alesi, Michael Schumacher and Sébastien Loeb on his way to victory at his very first attempt. The Finn also won the ROC Nations Cup with Marcus Grönholm in 2006.

Kovalainen’s first foray into rallying in Japan came in 2016 and has since competed in the Japan Rally Championship, where he dominated the JN-2 class championship to clinch the title with a round to spare, the Japan Super Rally Series and made his World Rally Championship debut at last year’s Rally Japan in a WRC2 car.

Extreme E’s marks Kovalainen’s latest venture in off-road racing but first time in an all-electric championship, as he teams up with Hosås to take on some of the most challenging environments in motorsport.

Heikki Kovalainen, JBXE, said: “I’m really excited to join JBXE in the Extreme E series in Saudi Arabia! It’s a great championship with great teams and drivers so I’m looking forward to competing with them.

“It’ll be something new again in my career. After my Formula One stint I’ve done GTs as well as some rallying and I’m always looking for new challenges and looking forward to giving this a try. It’ll be a steep learning curve no doubt but I’m up for it and hopefully we’ll get up to speed quickly.”

Currently a Veloce Racing Development Driver, Hosås has competed in Extreme E for JBXE since the double-header in Sardinia last term. Hosås made her series debut at the opening round of Season 2 last year, stepping in for the injured Christine GZ at Veloce Racing in Saudi Arabia, before switching to Jenson Button’s outfit at the next round.

The Norwegian teamed up with Kevin Hansen in the number 22 car and the Scandinavian duo raced to third place in the NEOM Island X Prix I, marking the podium on her debut for JBXE.

Hosås’ early career comprised largely of motocross competition before making the transition to rallycross. More recently, she has been competing in the Norwegian Rallycross Championship and made a guest appearance in the Danish championship in 2021.

Hedda Hosås, JBXE, said: “Super excited to be driving again for my second season with JBXE in Extreme E. To have the support and expertise of both Jenson and Heikki, two ex F1 drivers, will help me to continue my development as a driver.

“NEOM was my first ever race in the series when I stepped in as a reserve driver last year, so incredibly excited to be going back to where it started for me. I’m looking forward to working with my new team mate Heikki, he has a lot of experience from F1 to rally so I am sure he will adapt to Extreme E very quickly.”

Ali Russell, Chief Marketing Officer, said: I’m absolutely delighted to see such a strong pairing and how Extreme E has brought in a renowned former Formula One driver into our Championship, I cannot wait to see their journey start in NEOM for the Desert X Prix.

“With crossovers from both worlds of motorsport, this is fantastic to see for our series, reinforcing our approach to building a family with the best of motorsport to tackle climate change.”

Kovalainen will make his Extreme E debut alongside Hosås at the Desert X Prix in NEOM, Saudi Arabia, on 11-12 March.

As part of the all-electric series’ new sporting format, the Finn will have two shots at his first Extreme E victory, as all X Prix weekends become double-headers in Season 3, for double the racing but zero the impact on the environment.

ENVIROXSTREAM TO SPONSOR COREY LAJOIE, SPIRE MOTORSPORTS THREE TIMES IN 2023

CONCORD, N.C. (March 2, 2023) – Spire Motorsports announced today EnviroXstream, a safe, yet extremely powerful plant based, non-toxic, all-purpose cleaner/degreaser, will serve as the primary sponsor of Spire Motorsports No. 7 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 driven by Corey LaJoie in three NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) races in 2023, beginning with Sunday’s Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

In addition to the Pennzoil 400, EnviroXstream will be featured as the primary partner aboard LaJoie’s No. 7 Chevy for next weekend’s United Rentals 500K at Phoenix Raceway and at the July 30 Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond Raceway.

“We fully expect that our relationship with Spire Motorsports will greatly strengthen our ongoing efforts within automotive-related verticals, as well as within industries far removed from motorsports, both industrial and retail,” said EnviroXstream Interim CEO, Douglas Martin. “Our team continues to be optimistic about our EnviroXstream prospects going into 2023.”

LaJoie is currently 13th in the NCS points standings and has earned 16th and 14th-place finishes, respectively to open the 2023 season. The Concord, N.C., veteran racer has logged 10 total Cup Series starts at LVMS and calls last March’s 15th-place finish a career best at the 1.5-mile oval.

“It’s pretty exciting to partner with a company like EnviroXstream during this early west coast swing,” said LaJoie. “It’s a west coast company so it’s always fun to race close to a sponsor’s home base. We’ve had a solid start to the season. We’ll keep working hard, keep stacking pennies over the next couple weekends and hopefully keep the positive momentum rolling. We had a great weekend at Auto Club Speedway and, from a competition perspective, Vegas is a lot of fun. We’ll keep doing our thing and hopefully put together another solid run.”

The Pennzoil 400 from Las Vegas Motor Speedway will be televised live on FOX Sunday, March 5 beginning at 3:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The third of 36 points races on 2023 NCS schedule will be broadcast live on the Performance Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Channel 90.
