Ford Performance – Las Vegas Speedway Advance

LAS VEGAS SPEEDWAY NOTES

Friday, March 3 – NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, 9 p.m. ET (FS1)
Saturday, March 4 – NASCAR Xfinity Series, 4:30 p.m. ET (FS1)
Sunday, March 5 – NASCAR Cup Series, 3:30 p.m. ET (FOX)

The second leg of NASCAR’s western swing is scheduled for this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway as all three top series will compete. Ford goes into the action with a combined 30 wins at LVMS (Cup, 14; NXS, 11; NCTS, 5).

BUESCHER AND KESELOWSKI IN TOP 10

Four Ford drivers are in the Top 10 of the NASCAR Cup Series standings heading into Sunday’s scheduled race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, including both drivers from Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing. Team Penske’s Joey Logano is second and Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick is fourth while the RFK duo of Chris Buescher and Brad Keselowski are sixth and 10th, respectively. Logano has posted consecutive Top 10 finishes to start the season (2nd at Daytona; 10th at AC) while Harvick (5th at AC), Buescher (4th at Daytona) and Keselowski (7th at AC) have one apiece.

VEGAS PROVES TO BE LOGANO’S BEST TRACK

Joey Logano has three career victories at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and those wins have helped make the track his best statistically on the circuit. Logano sports an 8.5 average start and finish in 18 career starts, including a victory in last season’s playoff race. In fact, it’s the only track in which he’s made more than 10 career starts where his average finish is in single digits. Besides his three victories, Logano has 7 top-5 and 12 top-10 finishes at LVMS since joining the circuit in 2009.

ROUSH RULES

There have been two RFK drivers who have posted consecutive NASCAR Cup Series victories at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Jeff Burton won in 1999 and 2000 while Matt Kenseth did it in his championship season of 2003 and 2004. In fact, RFK has been a force in both the NASCAR Cup and NASCAR XFINITY Series at the 1.5-mile facility. The organization has posted seven NCS wins and six NXS victories for a total of 13 overall, which includes back-to-back weekend sweeps in 1999 and 2000. In addition, RFK has three NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series triumphs.

SWEEP DELIGHT FOR KESELOWSKI

Brad Keselowski completed a weekend sweep in 2014 after taking the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR XFINITY Series events on consecutive days. Even though Keselowski led the most laps in the NCS race, he needed a little bit of luck and got it on the final lap when Dale Earnhardt Jr., who was in conservation mode, ran out of gas on the back straightaway. That enabled Keselowski to win going away and post the first of his six victories that season.

MARTIN LEADS FORD CHARGE

IN INAUGURAL VEGAS CUP EVENT

Ford took the checkered flag at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the inaugural race at the 1.5-mile facility on March 1, 1998 as Mark Martin led a manufacturer runaway that saw 13 of the top 14 finishers driving a Taurus. The win was the first for Taurus, which became the first full-time four-door entry in NASCAR, after Ford decided to use it in the NASCAR Cup Series starting with the 1998 season. Martin bested Roush teammate Jeff Burton by 1.605 seconds to win the Las Vegas 400 with Rusty Wallace, Johnny Benson and Jeremy Mayfield rounding out the top-five. The only non-Ford to finish in the top-10 was the late Dale Earnhardt, who was eighth.

HERBST OFF TO SOLID START

Riley Herbst has posted back-to-back Top-10 finishes to start the season for the second year in a row. He’s coming off a seventh-place effort at Auto Club Speedway after a sixth-place showing in the season-opener at Daytona. If you throw in his 10th-place run in the Daytona 500, Herbst has nothing but Top-10 runs in three overall starts in 2023.

BRISCOE COMPLETES VEGAS FIRST

Chase Briscoe became the first driver to win both NASCAR XFINITY Series races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway since the track began hosting two events a year in 2018. Briscoe, who achieved the feat in 2020, won the spring event, which had to be run over the course of two days due to rain, after leading a race-high 89 laps. The key to his victory, however, was the pit crew, which got Briscoe off pit road first and allowed him to lead the final 36 circuits to post his first win of the season. He followed that up in the 2020 playoff opener with a dominating performance that saw him lead 164-of-200 laps. Briscoe won all three stages and left the track with the points lead and a guaranteed spot in the Round of 8.

DEEGAN READY TO REBOUND

Hailie Deegan was a victim of circumstances in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season-opener at Daytona, getting caught up in a multi-truck accident on lap 29 that ended her day before the finish. This weekend, Deegan will be sporting a Screen to Speed liveried Ford F-150 as she supports a women’s racing initiative sponsored by Ford and Pennzoil. Women from all over the world have been qualifying through iRacing for a spot in the live Screen to Speed finale, where 20 females will battle at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday night. Deegan will be on hand for the live broadcast and the winner will earn a track day test with the Kelly Moss Race team, $15,000 and a Next Level Racing simulator.

SMITH GOING FOR SECOND STRAIGHT WIN

Zane Smith is in the same position he was a year ago at this time, coming off a victory in the season-opening NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Daytona International Speedway, as he goes for consecutive wins to start the year for the first time in his career. Smith nearly pulled it off last year, running second to winner Chandler Smith before being dropped to 36th after a post-race lugnut infraction.

Jr III Racing has Winning Weekend at Sebring

Chris Green | ChrisGreenPhoto.com

Sebring, Fla. (28 February 2023) – Jr III (“Junior-Three”) Racing kicked off a four week stretch that includes three very different race events at Sebring International Raceway this weekend with a successful season-opening outing in Sportscar Vintage Racing Association’s (SVRA) SpeedTour event. The team supported several clients, preparing five cars for on-track duty at the bumpy Florida circuit, with Bill Glavin Jr. racing to two wins on the weekend.

Jr III Racing also prepared and supported the thundering brought a 2015 Dodge Challenger Trans Am driven by car owner Marc Sharinn, who made his fifth consecutive start at Sebring for the Spring SpeedTour event. Also in tow was the No. 76 1976 Ferrari 308 GT4 owned and driven by Vito Bigioni.

The Jr III Racing fleet on hand for the event included two 2020 BMW M2 CSR machines, with Glavin Jr. taking to the controls of the No. 99 Jr III Racing machine. Glavin Jr competed in two 30-minute sprint races and a 60-minute endurance race during the weekend, scoring two wins with a victory in Race 1 and then a second in the Historic Enduro.

Billy Glavin III, the owner of Jr III Racing, surprised his dad, Bill Glavin Jr., by bringing along the team’s 1973 BMW 3.0 CSL. Glavin Jr. was able to drive the CSL during Thursday’s test sessions. The CSL competed at the SVRA event at Sebring in 2020 with Glavin Jr. behind the wheel, which generated a victory as well as a runner-up finish.

“Between test sessions, SVRA, and IMSA events, we are spending a lot of time at Sebring this spring!” said Glavin III. “The team will be down here the next two weeks, so winning the Historic Enduro with my dad was a great way to start our time here. SVRA events are pretty straightforward so our clients and everyone under the tent has a great time at these events. This weekend was extra special because I could surprise my dad by bringing the CSL. The car means a lot to my dad and I, and he was so excited to get back behind the wheel of it this weekend.”

Jr III Racing will return to Sebring on March 12th for two VP Racing SportsCar Challenge races, followed by the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring on March 18th. Jr III Racing’s vintage program will be back on track on March 31st at VIRginia International Raceway for the Vintage Drivers Club of America’s Wild Hare Run weekend.

Notes of Interest

● With Kevin Harvick now in his 23rd year of NASCAR Cup Series competition, a familiar name backs the driver of the No. 4 Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR). Rheem, America’s No. 1 water heating brand and major air conditioning and heating manufacturer, is in its 16th consecutive year as a NASCAR sponsor. It’s also the 16th year of the company’s friendship with Harvick – a bond that began in 2007 and one that Harvick quickly galvanized when he won the season-opening Daytona 500. It was a victory for the ages as Harvick beat NASCAR Hall of Famer Mark Martin by .02 of a second in a frantic, green-white-checkered finish. It led to Rheem serving as a primary partner for Harvick’s NASCAR Xfinity Series team, Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI), in 2008. Rheem’s debut with KHI came on May 2, 2008 at Richmond (Va.) Raceway where Harvick finished second in the Lipton Tea 250. Harvick delivered Rheem its very first victory as a primary sponsor 13 years ago on Feb. 27, 2010 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway when he took the checkered flag in the Sam’s Town 300. Rheem aligned as a primary partner with Harvick in the NASCAR Cup Series in 2011 and remained with him until Harvick joined SHR in 2014. Rheem reunited with Harvick in 2022 and is back for another three-race slate in 2023, beginning this weekend at Las Vegas and reappearing July 30 at Richmond and Oct. 8 at the Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway Roval. Rheem will be hosting large groups of customers at all three of its Harvick Legacy Events in honor of the 2014 NASCAR Cup Series champion, his Hall of Fame-worthy career, and his loyal support of Rheem.

● DYK? Las Vegas Motor Speedway has been hosting races since 1996 and in its 27-year existence, Harvick has competed at the track every single year. His first race at the 1.5-mile oval north of the Las Vegas Strip was a NASCAR Winston West Series race on Nov. 2, 1996. Driving for Wayne and Connie Spears, Harvick started fourth and finished 13th. Ken Schrader won, Michael Waltrip finished third, Butch Gilliland finished sixth and Hershel McGriff finished 21st. How is Harvick connected to those four individuals?

● Ken Schrader: It was at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, on May 2, 1998 where Harvick raced Schrader for the win in the NASCAR Winston West Series race. Schrader prevailed, but Harvick made his mark by starting second and finishing second and leading 32 laps in between. Schrader took the win by 1.314 seconds, but veteran NASCAR team owner Richard Childress took note of the then 22-year-old Harvick. In Harvick’s Winston West return to Fontana on July 18, he one-upped his performance from two months prior. He started from the pole and ended with the win, taking the checkered flag by 1.15 seconds over Austin Cameron. He led 52 of the race’s 100 laps. Those victories were part of a five-win campaign that led Harvick to the 1998 Winston West championship and, ultimately, a 14-year career with Richard Childress Racing, with the team signing Harvick to race in the Xfinity Series in 2000.

● Michael Waltrip: This time next year, Harvick will be a teammate to Waltrip – not on a race team, but in the broadcast booth. Harvick will transition from a firesuit to a suit and tie in 2024 where he will join Waltrip on the FOX broadcast team.

● Butch Gilliland: Harvick has raced against three generations of Gillilands, beginning with patriarch Butch Gilliland (they first raced together on April 21, 1996 in the Truck Series at Phoenix Raceway), and then Butch’s son David Gilliland (in both Xfinity and Cup Series races from 2004-2018) and finally David’s son Todd Gilliland, who was a Cup Series rookie last year and remains in the series.

● Hershel McGriff: McGriff was recently inducted into the 2023 NASCAR Hall of Fame and he is known for his unsurpassed longevity in the sport. His first race was the 1950 Southern 500 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway when he was a 22-year-old competing in NASCAR’s sophomore season. His final race was the 2018 Port of Tucson Twin 100s where, as a 90-year-old, McGriff drove in the first of two 100-lap NASCAR West Series races at Tucson (Ariz.) Speedway. Harvick and McGriff competed against each other in Winston West from 1996 through 1998.

● Harvick has made a total of 45 starts across four NASCAR divisions at Las Vegas:

● 4 NASCAR Winston West Series starts (1996-1998): Best result – won from the pole in 1998 Cactus Clash, leading 89 of the race’s 100 laps.

● 3 NASCAR Truck Series starts (1997-1999); Best result – eighth in 1997 Carquest Auto Parts 420k.

● 11 NASCAR Xfinity Series starts (2000-2011): Best result – first, earned twice (2004 Sam’s Town 300 and 2010 Sam’s Town 300).

● 27 NASCAR Cup Series starts (2001-present); Best result – first, earned twice (2015 Las Vegas 400 and 2018 Las Vegas 400).

● Since joining SHR in 2014, Harvick has finished among the top-10 in eight of the 14 NASCAR Cup Series races contested at Las Vegas. In that span, the driver of the No. 4 Rheem Ford Mustang has led 621 laps and won twice – March 2015 and March 2018. Harvick finished 12th in each of the Cup Series races last year at the 1.5-mile oval.

● Harvick has led a total of 679 laps in the NASCAR Cup Series at Las Vegas, the most of any Cup Series driver in the history of the track. Next best in this category is seven-time Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson with 595 laps led. All but 58 of Harvick’s laps led at Las Vegas have come in his nine previous years with SHR.

● Harvick’s win at Las Vegas in March 2018 was his 100th career victory across NASCAR’s top-three national touring series – Cup, Xfinity and Truck. He has since scored 21 more Cup wins to bring his record to 121 total victories – 60 in Cup, 47 in Xfinity and 14 in Truck. Only three other drivers in NASCAR history have surpassed 100 wins across NASCAR’s top-three series: Kyle Busch (225 wins), Richard Petty (200 wins) and David Pearson (106 wins).

● There have been 30 NASCAR Cup Series races contested at Las Vegas, including its inaugural race on March 1, 1998. Harvick has started 27 of those races, the most of any driver, past or present.

Kevin Harvick, Driver of the No. 4 Rheem Ford Mustang

You’ve represented Rheem since 2007 when you won their debut race – the Daytona 500. Talk about your longevity with Rheem.

“I think the biggest thing about Rheem is they really utilize the sport in ways that it was utilized 20 years ago. With their hospitality program and the amount of dealers and people they bring to the racetrack, it’s really kind of the way I was brought up in the sport and how you maximize a sponsorship. It’s a relationship that goes back a long way, and having a lot of the same people involved makes that a lot of fun to be able to go through this part of my career and have them on the car and realize the commitment they’ve made to the sport. A lot of the same people who were with me in victory lane at Las Vegas back in 2010 when we first won with Rheem are still there today. Their customers have continued to show up and they’ve continued to support it and that makes you feel valuable. Rheem sees the value in NASCAR and they continue to use that to their benefit.”

This is your 23rd year in the NASCAR Cup Series. How valuable is that kind of experience in this sport?

“Today’s sport is so engineering-minded that the simple, everyday things sometimes get forgotten. It’s very important to do all the little things right, and you have to execute the simple things right, too. Don’t overcomplicate it, because sometimes overcomplicating results in a worse result than just say, ‘OK, today we finished fifth and next week we’re going to try to do two or three things to finish first, not 20 or 30 things and finish 30th.’ Keeping the simplicity of our process in the middle of our engineering-minded process is very important. It used to be trial-and-error when you tested. Nowadays, it’s try it and prove it or debunk it, so that it’s either right or wrong. But there are going to be a lot of decisions that we’re going to have to make this year that are just going to be simple-minded, common-sense decisions in order to just get the best out of what you have.”

You’ve won at Las Vegas twice and have finished among the top-10 five times in your last eight races at the track. What do you need to be quick there?

“Las Vegas has a lot of tire fall off, so it’s important to have a good-handling racecar. It’s also a track where you’re constantly moving around trying to find the right grip.”

Now that we’re in more of a routine, what are your expectations for you and the No. 4 team this season?

“For me, my expectations and our expectations as a team are probably the same as they’ve always been, and that is to go out and try to be as competitive as you can every week. On the bad weeks, try to get the best finish that you can, and on the good weeks, hopefully you can capitalize on some situations to put yourself in victory lane. As you look back on 2022, you realize the need to win a race so you can put yourself in the playoffs. There were so many people who won last year, and the way that you race and the things that happen in the race are so much different than years before because of the fact that it’s just more aggressive. You wreck more, you spin out more, it seems like the strategy gets mixed up more, and it seems like there are way more variables than there were in the past. So on the days when you’re in position to win, you need to figure out how to capitalize on those moments because there are probably going to be less of them for everybody. You’re probably going to have fewer top-fives, fewer top-10s than you did just because of the fact that the racing has changed.”

What is the No. 4 team’s competitive advantage?

“The biggest thing that always is a little bit of an advantage for us is we can lean on our experience together. I think that’s important because practice is so short, and especially now that we’ve had some time to be able to understand the car and be in a little better place as far as things to do, not do, tendencies of the car. We can apply that experience a little bit more just in being able to have good conversations and understanding and looking at each other and hearing the tone of each other’s voice and really knowing whether it’s extreme, middle of the road, just a little bit, and what that means as far as adjustments to the car. Experience has always been something that has helped us over the last several years.”

The March race at Las Vegas coincides with your wedding anniversary. You had a lot going on in 2001. Walk us through it.

“So, 2001 was, obviously, a much different year than you can even wrap your arms and your mind around because of the fact that DeLana and I had planned to get married in 2001 in Las Vegas. It was a neutral site for the families, an easy place for everybody to get to. Then everything happened with Dale (Earnhardt) and I was driving the 29 car, which was not supposed to happen until the next year. So, it was just supposed to be a calm Busch Series fulltime season, seven Cup races in 2001, and then obviously it was fulltime Busch racing, fulltime Cup racing, testing, everything that went with both series. In the midst of all that, we had a wedding that had already been planned for the third week of the season in Las Vegas. So, I ran my first Cup Series race the second weekend at Rockingham (North Carolina). The race got rained out and got delayed until Monday, and you can only imagine the freak-outs that are happening with your soon-to-be wife who has planned a wedding a couple thousand miles away and you’re rained out, so you’re racing on a Monday. After the race, it was the first time we’d ever flown on a helicopter. We get on the helicopter, we go to the wrong airport, we get back on the helicopter, we go back to the racetrack, we get on the right helicopter, we go to the right airport, and then everything probably calmed down at that particular point. We got married on a Wednesday night and, really, in the midst of everything that had gone on with Dale and the team, the wedding was kind of a blessing because we were able to plan something in the middle of a tragic event that had happened with Dale, it was really all planned out for the team and our friends and family to be there and bring everybody together. We got married on Wednesday night, and then we went to the racetrack and we rented a Winnebago that couldn’t have been more than 24 feet long. It was very small, but our friend, Michael Gaughan, decided he was going to send his chef and everybody from the kitchen, to cook for us. Little did he know that we would have them cooking outside because our motorhome wasn’t big enough for anybody else to come inside. So, we had a great Michael’s restaurant right in the middle of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway parking lot outside of a 24-foot Winnebago. That was our wedding dinner at the racetrack. It was a great time.”

(Note: Dale Earnhardt died in a crash on the last lap of the 2001 Daytona 500 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway. Team owner Richard Childress tabbed Harvick, who was racing for him in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, to pull double-duty and take over Earnhardt’s Cup ride. The No. 3, made iconic by Earnhardt, was changed to the No. 29 and Harvick made his Cup Series debut Feb. 25 at North Carolina Speedway in Rockingham. Harvick started 36th that Sunday at Rockingham, but rain washed over the 1.017-mile oval just 51 laps into the 393-lap race. The race resumed at 11 a.m. ET on Monday, whereupon Harvick drove to a solid 14th-place finish. He then traveled to Las Vegas on Tuesday, married his wife, DeLana, on Wednesday, and was back in a racecar on Friday, competing in both the Xfinity Series and Cup Series events at Las Vegas. After finishing eighth on Sunday to score his first career top-10 in the Cup Series, Harvick headed to Atlanta Motor Speedway where the first of his 60 career NASCAR Cup Series wins was secured.)

CHEVROLET INDYCAR AT ST. PETERSBURG: TEAM CHEVY ADVANCE

CHEVROLET IN NTT INDYCAR SERIES
STREETS OF ST. PETERSBURG GRAND PRIX
ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA
TEAM CHEVY ADVANCE
FEBRUARY 28, 2023

QUEST FOR EIGHTH NTT INDYCAR SERIES MANUFACTURER TITLE BEGINS ON THE STREETS OF ST. PETERSBURG

SETTING THE SEASON’S STAGE IN ST. PETE

Entering the 2023 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season, Chevrolet looks to defend capturing the coveted 2022 Manufacturer Championship, in addition to the driver’s title with Will Power and owner’s title with Roger Penske. Both the Manufacturer and driver/owner titles were the seventh for Chevrolet since rejoining INDYCAR competition in 2012 with the 2.2 liter V6 twin turbo direct injected engine.

In seeking its eighth title, it all starts for Chevrolet on the 1.8-mile, 14-turn temporary street circuit in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida. On the intricate street course, Chevrolet drivers have raced to victory eight times since 2012. The season-opening event holds a special place in Scott McLaughlin’s heart, who earned his first career win in INDYCAR last year in St. Pete driving the No. 3 Chevrolet for Team Penske.

“I know that we made a massive step personally for me last year,” noted McLaughlin. “That was due to a number of things clicking, working out really good. But now what we know of INDYCAR racing, you just need to continue stepping up a little. We need to continue to build as a team, and for myself. I’ve certainly looked at negatives that I can improve on. Hopefully that bodes well to repeat our win at the season opening race at St. Petersburg, and for the rest of the season.”

“There is a great vibe for all of us at Team Chevy heading into the NTT INDYCAR Series season-opening race on the Streets of St. Petersburg,” said Rob Buckner, Engineering Program Manager for Chevrolet in NTT INDYCAR SERIES. “Although 2022 is in our rear view mirror, there is positivity and momentum coming off our successful season for all of our teams and drivers. We are looking forward to working with new drivers, engineers, and other team members to get 2023 off to a great start. The fans at St Petersburg are awesome and have a great appreciation for INDYCAR.

“Every year the INDYCAR Series gets more and more competitive. We will have the largest grid we’ve had for many seasons, which ups the level of importance of getting the cars as close as possible right off the truck to ensure qualifying success. On some tracks, where you start plays a huge part in how well a race will play-out for a team and driver. Our teams powered by the Chevrolet 2.2 liter V6 engine have worked tirelessly throughout the off-season to gain performance out of every inch of the car. St. Petersburg is a challenge with changing surfaces and limited passing zones so maximizing tire and throttle management is critical. St. Pete has been good to Chevy over the past 11 years, so we want to continue to add to those statistics.”

The 19th Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg kicks off with practice on Friday, March 3, at 3 p.m. ET. On Saturday, practice will start at 10 a.m. ET; Firestone Fast Six qualifying will start at 2:15 p.m. ET. The morning warmup on Sunday is at 9 a.m. ET. All practice and qualifying will be live on Peacock, INDYCAR Radio and SiriusXM Channel 160. The 100-lap race Sunday, March 5 will take the green flag at 12 p.m. ET live on NBC.

TEAM PENSKE PREVIEW

Kicking off their 12th year of partnership with Team Chevy with the V6 engine, Team Penske looks to capitalize on Will Power’s 2022 INDYCAR championship and Scott McLaughlin’s St. Petersburg win, along with their nine victories last season. With eyes forward on the new year, Team Penske added to their strategic powerhouse on Josef Newgarden’s No. 2 Chevrolet, with Luke Mason moving to be Newgarden’s race engineer. Scott McLaughlin will continue to build on the momentum made in 2022 with race engineer Ben Bretzman on the No. 3 Chevrolet, while Will Power will continue to be supported by his long-time race engineer Dave Faustino on the No. 12 Chevrolet.

ED CARPENTER RACING PREVIEW

With a year of upcoming team and driver milestones, Ed Carpenter Racing enters 2023 looking to grace the podium with drivers Rinus VeeKay and Conor Daly. Milestones the team hopes to celebrate with on-track success will be Conor Daly’s 100th INDYCAR start at Long Beach, VeeKay’s 50th start at Barber Motorsports Park, and team owner/driver Ed Carpenter’s 200th start in the second race at Iowa Speedway’s doubleheader in July.

Heading into the first event of the season, the team sees Matt Barnes continuing oversight as Chief Engineer, while also serving as race engineer to Rinus VeeKay on the No. 21 Chevrolet. Pete Craik will lead Conor Daly on the No. 20 Chevrolet, while Brent Harvey serves as race engineer for Ed Carpenter and the No. 33 Chevrolet on ovals this season.

ARROW MCLAREN INDYCAR PREVIEW

Heading into the 2023 INDYCAR season, Arrow McLaren has shifted from two-full time entries to three. Joining drivers Pato O’Ward in the No. 5 Chevrolet and Felix Rosenqvist in the No. 6 Chevrolet, will be Alexander Rossi in the No. 7 Chevrolet.

O’Ward looks to continue his quest for more podium finishes and wins starting at St. Peter. As the 2022 season wound down, Rosenqvist’s performances were on the upswing, and he and the No. 6 team look to continue their climb in the season opener. Bringing his seven years of INDYCAR competition experience, and 114 starts with eight wins, Rossi seeks to notch not only his first win on the Streets of St. Petersburg, but also his first win for Chevrolet as well. O’Ward will be led by race engineer Will Andersen, with race engineer Chris Lawrence guiding Rosenqvist, and Craig Hampson leading Rossi and the No. 7 team.

AJ FOYT RACING PREVIEW

AJ Foyt Racing welcomes two new full-time drivers for the 2023 season. Santino Ferrucci will drive the famed-No. 14 Chevrolet, with INDYCAR rookie Benjamin Pedersen behind the wheel of the No. 55 Chevrolet. Heading into St. Petersburg, Pedersen will be paired with Daniele Cucchiaroni as race engineer, while Ferrucci will be led from the timing stand by Roberto Garcia as race engineer.

JUNCOS HOLLINGER RACING PREVIEW

Returning to the No. 77 Chevrolet for Juncos Hollinger Racing is Callum Ilott. Joining Ilott will be Argentina’s Agustin Canapino in the No. 78 Chevrolet. Building on last year’s improving qualifying efforts as well as his two top-10 career INDYCAR finishes, Ilott looks to the new season as an opportunity to continue the team’s momentum. Moving from Argentina to the United States to start his INDYCAR career at the beginning of 2023, Agustin Canapino kicked off his rookie campaign with preseason testing at Thermal Club in February.

Ilott is supported by Steve Barker as race engineer for the No. 77 team this season, while rookie Canapino will be led by Charlie Ping as race engineer in the No. 78.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING (QUOTES)

Josef Newgarden, No. 2 Chevrolet at Team Penske:

“During our test, I felt really good with our package. The progress we made in 2022 was very evident here, very useful because of (…) first-gear corners, very big premium on traction, traction capability. I thought our drivability was fantastic. It’s good to have this type of environment [at Thermal Club] to get ready for St. Pete. I left the test feeling really confident that we’ve got a team that can build together and try and push from the very beginning of the season. I thought the performance on the 100% renewable fuel was fantastic. It’s a huge step that we’re making as a series with Shell to run 100% renewable fuel. The first series in the United States to be able to do that. I didn’t notice any performance loss from the engine. I can’t speak highly enough about that step. We should be shouting that from mountaintops. It’s very cool what Shell has been able to provide us. I think the Chevrolet engine has adapted quite well to it. The drivability has been excellent.”

Will Power, No. 12 Chevrolet at Team Penske:

“I think it’s the whole off-season of preparation. You’ve got simulators that you can go through setup items and somewhat keep sharp. It’s never the same as the real car. There’s no substitute for being in the real car. But everyone is in the same boat, and you’ve got to make the most of these very limited days. Then we turn up at St. Pete and it’s a track that suits me. It’s pretty tight, technical, got to brush walls to get it. Yeah, everything I like about qualifying is that track, and there’s not much time to think so you’re always in a corner. Yeah, always look forward to going to St. Pete.”

Conor Daly, No. 20 Chevrolet at Ed Carpenter Racing:

“It’s been cool to be around for nine seasons, but I’m just excited to be here again. This level of continuity is super important, right? We have a great off-season to work together with the team, to work with all of our partners, to really market what we want to market really well this year with BITNILE.COM. We want to be faster at certain places. We’ve been able to look at all those places all during the off-season, which is really cool. We got to do a lot of simulating days in the end of last season, the beginning of this season. There’s a lot of really cool stuff. I can hardly wait for St. Petersburg.”

Rinus VeeKay, No. 21 Chevrolet at Ed Carpenter Racing:

“Starting at race one, my goals for the 2023 season are getting back to the top step of the podium, winning a race again, hopefully more than one. But ideally just to be more consistent and be closer to top-fives and top-10s all the time so we can be high up in the championship standings at the end of the season. I’m really excited to get to St. Petersburg; first race of the season. I’m excited for that.”

Pato O’Ward, No. 5 Chevrolet at Arrow McLaren INDYCAR:

“In terms of personnel, this year has been a very big one for Arrow McLaren. One reason being probably because of the third car, and the team is growing. It’s great to see everyone’s enthusiasm. Everybody’s here for that one goal. We all put so much time and sacrifice and energy into making these racecars go quicker. We, as drivers, put it into how we can maximize it. Really excited to get this season underway.”

Felix Rosenqvist, No. 6 Chevrolet at Arrow McLaren INDYCAR:

“I think it’s a massive opportunity to be back for a third year. I feel like I have all the tools I need to perform. I’m feeling pretty good with everyone at the car. There were so many things happening on and off the track, and as a team we really learned a lot from that we can bring into this season, so I think we will be tough this year. We have a lot of things in the bag to try early this season. I’m in a great spot. I’m in a well-performing team, not only at Arrow McLaren but my No. 6 car will be strong this year. I feel well with everyone around me. I feel like I have good support from the team to go and perform. I just try to do what I can do which is go fast forward and races.”

Alexander Rossi, No. 7 Chevrolet at Arrow McLaren INDYCAR:

“Arrow McLaren is a fantastic organization whose results speak for themselves. I think that what they’ve done in the past couple of years is very impressive. They’re a great organization with great partners and great people and getting to work now with GM and Chevy has been pretty cool as well; to see what they’re doing and to push the program forward. Like Is aid, it’s been a lot of conversations and things in theory, and we don’t really know anything until we get on track, but from where we sit, we’re very, very excited for what’s to come.”

Santino Ferrucci, No. 14 Chevrolet at AJ Foyt Racing:

“I actually haven’t driven on a street course in INDYCAR in quite some time. Hopefully it’s like riding a bike and just comes right back to us. It’s been nice though to be with the team since September, so I kind of already feel like I’ve had a season before the season, so we’ll see what we can do. Getting the opportunity to work with AJ [Foyt] and the team to take this team from where it is and to build something with Michael [Cannon] and Larry [Foyt] is going to be nothing short of a challenge. But I’m really looking forward to that. I really think I’m up to that challenge now. It will be a reflection on all of us how we do this year because it’s not just on me, it’s not just on Michael Cannon, it’s not just on our leadership. It’s on everybody coming together as a team and making this effort, making a really good effort.”

Benjamin Pedersen, No. 55 Chevrolet at AJ Foyt Racing:

“I felt like last year I was a part of the team. The only thing I wasn’t doing was driving the car; every team meeting I was a part of. Being on the timing stand, seeing strategy come into play, it was a really big help. It made me feel like I got a season’s worth of experience without driving the car, and now the only difference is, I’ll be driving the car. The strategy meetings, everything like that, will feel similar and I’m grateful to the team for letting me be a part of that last year. I can’t wait to do it now for real, and as an official driver for them and working together.”

Callum Ilott, No. 77 Chevrolet at Juncos Hollinger Racing:

“What sets INDYCAR apart from Formula 2 or whatever, you are constantly competing with the best. If you look at the grid this year, it’s incredible. I thought last year was good, and this year is going to be a touch better. Going into St. Pete, Long Beach, the ovals, for me, that will be really where the performance gain is. To be able to really compare what the performance gain that we had across the season to last year compared to now this year, that will be important to see. St. Pete will be a tough one, but a good one to see where we’re really at.”

Agustin Canapino, No. 78 Chevrolet at Juncos Hollinger Racing:

“I chose to take the opportunity to come to America because it’s INDYCAR. INDYCAR, in my opinion, is the most demanding and competitive category in the world. For me, it’s a big opportunity to try something at an international level. We’re here with some of the best drivers in the world. It’s a big opportunity. I don’t know the cars, the tracks, the ovals, but I love the challenge. I love the situation. I know it will be difficult to me, but I have confidence. I need time. I need to learn day by day, test by test. t’s awesome. In my country, Chevy fans are a lot. You can see a lot of people with tattoos of with the Chevy logo, my car, my signature. The Chevy brand in my country is very popular so for me, it’s a good thing.”

Michael McDowell and No. 34 Quincy Compressors Ford Team Las Vegas Competition Notes

Michael McDowell and No. 34 Quincy Compressors Ford Team
Las Vegas 400 Competition Notes

TEAM AND RACE NOTES:

A new 2023 partner makes its debut this weekend on the No. 34 Ford Mustang and driver Michael McDowell. Quincy Compressor, a Bay Minette, Alabama-based compressor manufacturer, begins its first of four primary races this season with Front Row Motorsports (FRM). Quincy Compressor will help lead McDowell and the No. 34 Quincy Compressor team to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway for Sunday’s 400-mile NASCAR Cup Series race. Quincy Compressor will then support Todd Gilliland as a primary sponsor three times later this season.

Founded in 1920, Quincy Compressor is a leading designer and manufacturer of reciprocating and rotary screw air compressors, vacuum pumps, and a full line of air treatment components. Headquartered in Bay Minette, Alabama, Quincy has built its reputation on quality and rugged reliability, building tough air compressors for the most demanding applications. With a legacy spanning over one hundred years, they are excited to bring their “True Blue” brand to NASCAR’s premiere series and to its millions of passionate fans.

Practice and qualifying will take place this Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. ET on FS1.

The Las Vegas 400 is scheduled for Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET on FOX.

COMPETITION NOTES:

This weekend’s race is the second of three west coast races for NASCAR Cup Series teams.

McDowell heads to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway 16th in points.

The team has not raced this chassis yet this year.

CREW CHIEF TRAVIS PETERSON:

“Las Vegas Motor Speedway will be our first, true mile-and-a-half oval this season. We want to learn a lot, but at least we have notes from last season. It gives us confidence that we’ll have a fast Quincy Compressor Ford Mustang.

“Las Vegas is so fast that you’re setting up a car that allows Michael to stay in the gas and move around where needs to. We want to give him a good balanced car and let him do the rest.”

DRIVER MICHAEL MCDOWELL:

“First of all, I like the group we have on our No. 34 team this year. And I say that because I think we’re all pulling in the right direction, controlling what we can control, and communicating well. I look ahead to this weekend at Las Vegas, and with this group I’m confident that we can get a top-10 at this track. This race has plagued us a bit.

“Sometimes, it’s been tough for us to catch up early in the year, but our confidence has been good this year. We feel that our cars have been solid and there isn’t doubt that we’re going to have speed and make the best race calls.

“So, yeah, I feel good heading into Las Vegas and getting our first top-10 of the season.”

Todd Gilliland and No. 38 Ruedebusch Development and Construction Ford Team Las Vegas Competition Notes

Todd Gilliland and No. 38 Ruedebusch Development and Construction Ford Team
Las Vegas 400 Competition Notes

TEAM AND RACE NOTES:

Front Row Motorsports (FRM) and Todd Gilliland continue to push through the west coast swing as they head to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway for this Sunday’s 400-miler. Making its 2023 debut will be the colors of Ruedebusch Development and Construction on the No. 38 Ford Mustang. This is the second consecutive season the Wisconsin-based company has supported Gilliland in the NASCAR Cup Series.

Sunday’s race is the second of a three-week journey to the west for NASCAR. The team came back from a wet Fontana race weekend and will work all day and evening Tuesday night to make final preparations on Gilliland’s Ford. The car will load on a “swap” hauler that will then meet the team hauler later this week in Las Vegas.

Sunday’s race will be live on FOX at 3:30 p.m. ET. Action begins on Saturday with practice and qualifying at 1:35 p.m. ET on FS1.

COMPETITION NOTES:

The Las Vegas car came through the FRM fab shop and was put onto the setup plate last week with final prep and loading this evening. A tight turnaround, the Ruedebusch Development and Construction team knows the start of the season is a grind.

CREW CHIEF RYAN BERGENTY:

“The start of the season is a challenge. This west coast swing takes an ‘all hands-on deck’ approach to get these cars to and from the tracks. They need to be prepared and ready to race. We just saw that at Fontana. The first lap at speed was during the race, so we need to be working hard.

“Everyone from the shop guys, road crew, hauler drivers and more have been working their tails off these past couple of weeks. I can’t thank them enough because it takes the whole team. We’re in the middle of this grind and everyone is doing their job.”

DRIVER TODD GILLILAND:

“I can’t thank everyone enough for all the time and effort they have put into getting the cars ready. The beginning of the season isn’t easy on anyone. You are crossing the country multiple times. We don’t have a big team, so we need the road crew back at the shop helping our guys getting the car ready.

“I’m back in the sim and always working on our package for our races. So, it’s a big challenge early in the year.

“I think we’re in a good place with our Ruedebusch Development and Construction Ford Mustang. I am working hard to the best I can at the mile-and-a-half tracks. Each one is different, and Las Vegas is fast. You cannot lose momentum at all. You just need to keep your speed up or you’re going to lose positions.

“But I am ready. It’s cool to have Ruedebusch Development and Construction back on the car. They have been a huge supporter of mine and they’ll be helping me more this season.”

Martin Truex Jr., Driver of the No. 19 Bass Pro Shops Toyota Camry TRD

What are you expecting out at Las Vegas this weekend?

“Vegas is a great track that’s wide and you can run all over. We saw a lot of guys run high there last year just with the bumps. I feel like the car has evolved and we’ve gotten better at being able to get through the bumps and move around. I expect it to be a great race out in Vegas, I love going out there and it’s a great racetrack. That’s one race where we were in contention right to the very end with our Bass Pro Shops Camry and were fighting for the lead and eventually the caution came out and the strategy didn’t work out.”

What were the closing laps like last spring at Las Vegas when you and Kyle Busch were battling for the win?

“I tracked down Kyle and I was working really hard to get by him. I was working the bottom and he was working up high. I cleared him once off of (turn) four and he crossed me back over since I didn’t have the momentum. We were playing that cat and mouse game and trying to get a little bit of that advantage. Then the caution came out and a few guys came down and took two tires and there was a buffer between us who took four and those who took two tires. I got back there and then got blocked on the restart and ran out of time.”

What is it about Las Vegas and tire strategy, since that wasn’t the first time a late-race caution changed things drastically there?

“It’s an interesting place, it’s fast and high-speed and has tire falloff but, for whatever reason, it’s a place that has unique asphalt, and when the tires cool off you can fire off and run one or two fast laps. These days, with these cars, if you can get that clean air and get those two to three car lengths out front of guys that are on better tires behind you and guys in between you and the four-tire guys, you have a huge advantage for a few laps. It’s all about what the other guy does. You can be the only guy on two tires and you are a sitting duck, but if you have four to five guys behind you on two tires, you have a bit of a buffer and so it just depends on what goes on around you.”

What is it like in the middle of the West Coast swing this year as opposed to this time last year as far as the NextGen car goes?

“We know a lot more this year than we did this time last year. It was pretty eye opening to see how different the car was around this time last year, as far as how you set it up and how you work on it. We’ve learned a ton and feel pretty confident about how it’s different than last year and, in a lot of cases last year, we learned what not to do. Really fired up about going to Vegas and then on to Phoenix to finish the West Coast swing and see where we stack up. I think we were pretty fast at Fontana but had some issues there and didn’t get the track position back to get all the way back up front and fight for the win. These are three completely different racetracks and we should get a good gauge after the next couple of weeks of where we are at.”

Now that you have a full year of the NextGen car under your belt, how different is it, and what else can you learn?

“You know, it’s still a racecar. It has four tires, gas pedal, brake pedal, steering wheel, shifter. You get to learn how to drive it and learn what it wants. I feel like we’ve done that. I know what I need in it now. I think from the Toyota side of things that we were lacking in some areas last year. NASCAR changed some rules and I feel like we are all closer together now. I think that’s going to be plus for us because we were lacking a lot at the short tracks and road courses, to be specific. A lot of good things for us on paper, but you’ve got to see what happens on the track. Last year, I felt comfortable in the car in just a few weeks, and then it was all about how we apply it, and we have a great team that works hard on figuring all of that out.”
