Timo Scheider reflects on his competitive Extreme E debut

From Championship Driver to XITE ENERGY Racing driver, Timo Scheider was thrown in the deep end as he took on his first race at Extreme E’s first double-header, co-organised by Automobile Club d’Italia and Regione Sardegna.

The German was called up to join Tamara Molinaro, who drove for the Championship alongside Scheider last season, behind the wheel for the XITE ENERGY Racing team in Sardinia.

Despite the difficult circumstances, it was a scenario that the 43-year-old took in his stride as he secured second on his maiden X Prix start in a dream debut.

Extreme E: What did you make of your Extreme E debut?
Timo Scheider: I think the entire paddock, the team managers, and drivers made something of this. They reacted nicely to my success and of course, it felt good to get that kind of feedback and spread that kind of energy in terms of performance.

It’s always something special when you’re on site for one and a half years, and you finally get the chance to prove yourself in terms of performance. In the end, we all know racing is down to performance and results.

To just jump in with XITE and Tamara without knowing each other as teammates and without knowing the team meant no advantages for us. We started from scratch, and we were guessing a bit in terms of set up and directions.

The team’s all-new driver line-up made an instant impact at the NEOM Island X Prix I to finish second in Sardinia after on-track winners Rosberg X Racing (RXR) received a 30-second time penalty which dropped them to third.

XE: A podium first time out is hugely impressive. How did you manage that?
TS: In the end, I think I was just lucky to jump in and feel comfortable and to set good pace straight away. I had confidence even though we had no idea about the set up, but it was more about finding ourselves as teammates and getting Tamara comfortable.

I couldn’t just focus on my own feelings which has been something new for all of us. That was the target, and in the end, it was about making no mistakes and avoiding problems and penalties and stuff like that.

It was pretty impressive to be honest because we didn’t expect anything coming into the weekend without testing and without knowing the new suspension – but that was a positive shock I would say!

XE: Yourself and Tamara looked like a great partnership, how did you gel so quickly?
TS: Well, we know each other like teammates but of course when it comes down to driving everyone has their own feelings and their own preferences. I have my thoughts on the car, but I understood quickly that getting Tamara comfortable in the car was just as important. We’ve known each for quite some time now and it was super lucky for us to team up and perform well together.

XE: You’ve been working with Extreme E and helping to develop the circuits throughout your time in the Championship. What were you advising the team in terms of development during the week?
TS: This time all the teams knew the track from last year. I had no idea about the last sector as that had changed. Honestly, yes, I was driving the track last year for a few laps in the ODYSSEY, but after this the other teams have been racing and testing, and I haven’t had anything.

Just knowing a track layout doesn’t mean you are facing any advantage. So actually, compared to the rest of the field in pure driving and knowledge we are way behind the others.

Whatever it was, the team was super motivated and that was really impressive. To go there and see every mechanic and engineer fighting so hard, that was something amazing to see.

Scheider and Molinaro failed to do one better in the second part of the Sardinian double-header, coming away from the Crazy Race with a DNF after a run of misfortunes in the NEOM Island X Prix II.

XITE ENERGY Racing finished Qualifying in ninth place. The team could have been higher up the order, but with Tamara Molinaro recovering from a dislocated shoulder after the previous Final, she lost crucial seconds in Q1 with a half-spin and a penalty for Scheider in Q2 saw the team finish fourth in the Heat.

It all came down to the Crazy Race, which saw XITE ENERGY Racing chasing down the pack until Molinaro charged off course, unsighted by the dust from Woolridge’s spin and putting the team out of contention for another podium.

XE: You were not able to score a podium in the second event – was that much more challenging?
TS: It was not much more challenging in the second event. Of course, after the first result you build up some expectations and from pure speed, we would have been easily able to finish in the top five or even the top three.

You have to get everything together though and we got unlucky with Q1 when Tamara had her half-spin. We lost a lot of time and ended up P9 which means you’re in a bad starting spot for the Crazy Race.

I also got a 30 second penalty for contact with Timmy [Hansen] which from my point of view was not a penalty at all. The result saw Timmy gaining a position via contact, and we have seen that many times. It’s how racing is, and I think that’s what spectators want to see, but of course we need to be sensible.

The good thing is that we had the pace. If anything, we picked up more pace and closed the gap to the front runners which was nice to see. Of course, there are bits and pieces that I need to improve on, and this is the case for Tamara and the team as well.

XE: What are your expectations for Chile?
TS: It’s a new track for everyone, nobody knows anything about it. We will for sure aim again for the Final and once you’re there, anything is possible. It would be nice to prove another time of the high level of performance we can achieve.

Flying Lizard Takes Rain Dance to Road America Podium

ELKHART LAKE, Wis., (August 8, 2022) – Flying Lizard Motorsports returned to the podium at Road America this weekend, as Joel Miller and the No. 11 Giddy Lamborghini earned second place in a challenging race to take the car’s first top-three overall result of the season. With the weekend highs came the weekend lows, and the other two Lizard entries suffered contact, unable to partake in the weekend’s full schedule.

Though Tom Tait showed great car control and speed leading up to the weekend’s pair of races, racing was not in the cards for the No. 64 Lamborghini. An incident in qualifying caused detrimental damage to the green machine, resulting in Tait retiring from the weekend, though he remained onside to support his teammates, Joel Miller and Slade Stewart.

In race one, Joel Miller and the No. 11 Giddy Lamborghini made their Pro-class debut, as Miller’s Am-ranked co-driver Brett Jacobson was unable to attend the event. He started from fourth in the Pro class and eighth overall, while teammate Slade Stewart started the race from LB Cup pole position. Stewart had a large gap over his competition while Miller was entrenched in a battle for position while the race endured several full-course cautions. With about 15 minutes remaining in race one, Stewart’s pink unicorn No. 14 Lamborghini suffered a puncture, forcing him to limp back to pit lane for a fresh right rear tire, losing the top position in class. Meanwhile. Miller had produced a strong run but was penalized one position for not yielding to an oncoming car at pit lane exit. The challenging race for the Lizards netted a final position of sixth in class for Miller and fifth in class for Stewart.

Race two was even less kind to Stewart and the Unicorn Lamborghini. As the field conducted a pre-race pace lap, contact from another car that did not slow as the cars bunched up caused damage to the rear suspension. The damage ended up being too much to repair in the limited time, and Stewart retired before the field took the green flag.

Miller, the last Lizard standing, started the race from eighth position in the Pro class, and immediately got to work, gaining a position as the skies darkened over Road America. As it did earlier in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race, rain descended over the four-mile course, bringing out a full course caution.

From there, the race’s outcome was determined by the strategy teams choose on tire selection. After a brief red flag due to weather conditions, the field restarted for a 17-minute sprint to the checker flag. Miller had climbed his way up to third place, though the Pro class leader had yet to make his mandatory pit stop. Miller, knowing the leader would receive a penalty, stayed focused on the No. 88 Lamborghini ahead, and engaged in a heated battle for second place. The two raced side by side throughout the final turns, but in the end, Miller finished second. Elated with the No. 11’s first podium of the season, Miller celebrated in pit lane with the Lizard crew, satisfied with the success of the weekend.

“That was one of the most fun in a while,” said Miller. “The race was all about tire management as soon as we came on to the rain tire. There was no water out there on track. So once we got in a good position, it was all about managing it. The other car wanted to push hard the whole time, so we let him do it. We saved our tires and made sure we had a good run at the end. Second place overall was great for the whole program. I’m bummed Brett couldn’t be here. Thanks to Giddy, Flying Lizard, and the whole crew. We’re learning more about this car. This is our first year doing this, so we’re still putting the pieces together and look forward to more later.”

Though it was a challenging week for the Flying Lizard effort, Program Manager Darren Law left the weekend feeling happy with the end result.

“We had an up and down weekend and some struggles with a couple of the cars due to on-track incidents,” said Law. “But I’m really happy for Joel, Brett Jacobson, and the Giddy car. It was a challenging race. It was unfortunate that Slade got taken out early on in race two as he had a great qualifying lap to get pole position but Joel had an amazing run and an exciting finish. He almost closed it out on the last lap. I’m really happy to see our car in P2 overall, the entire team has been working hard this year and I’m looking forward to the next race.”

The next race of the season, and the final round in the United States, will be held at VIRginia International Raceway in support of the Michelin GT Challenge at VIR with the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Justin Haley to Make NASCAR Xfinity Series Return at Daytona

Kaulig Racing Fielding Fourth Entry in Wawa 250

 LEXINGTON, N.C. (August 8, 2022) – Defending winner of the two, most recent Wawa 250 races, Justin Haley will make his return to NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) action with Kaulig Racing at Daytona International Speedway, as the team fields a fourth entry, the No. 14 Chevrolet.

Haley, who earned his first-ever NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) win at Daytona in 2019, recorded four wins for Kaulig Racing in the NXS, including the last two summer races at Daytona.

“I’m so excited to have the opportunity to come back to the Xfinity Series with Kaulig Racing!” Said Haley. “In a way, it feels like this is my bread and butter, especially at Daytona, one of my favorite tracks. Together, we had three, successful Xfinity Series seasons at Kaulig Racing that transpired into a great first, full season so far in the Cup Series.”

Haley is Kaulig Racing’s longest-tenured driver and is currently the team’s first, full-time driver in the NCS. So far in the 2022 season, Haley has earned one top five, two top 10s and nine top-15 finishes.

1. Chase Elliott: Elliott overcame a slow start to post an 11th at Michigan.

“There are three races left in the regular season,” Elliott said, “so the pressure is going to be immense for some drivers. But not for me. While some drivers are thinking about just making the playoffs, I’ll be thinking about winning the championship. There the playoff bubble, and there’s the playoff bubbly.”

2. Joey Logano: Logano finished fourth at Michigan, posting his sixth top-five of the season.

4. Martin Truex Jr.: Truex finished sixth at Michigan, but with Kevin Harvick’s win, finds himself in a perilous playoff predicament.

“The words ‘Kevin Harvick winning’ is painful to my ears,” Truex said. “I think there’s only one other thing that would pain my ears even more, and that’s Brad Daugherty’s southern accent.”

5. Ryan Blaney: Blaney came home fifth at Michigan, recording his eighth top-five of the year.

“I’m still searching for my first win this season,” Blaney said. “But I’m battling hard with Martin Truex Jr. to see who can not win the best.”

6. Kyle Larson: Larson overcame a pit road speeding penalty and charged toward the front during Stage 3 to finish seventh in the FireKeepers Casino 400.

“I was just a bit unlucky,” Larson said. “But as they say in this sport, ‘Those are the breaks.’ Or as they say about Kyle Larson, ‘Those are the brakes, and they either don’t work, or I don’t use them properly.”

7. Ross Chastain: Chastain was a threat to win until a late speeding penalty left him a lap down. He finished 24th, one lap down.

“My day at Michigan wasn’t a total loss,” Chastain said. “I had contact with Christopher Bell with 41 laps to go. Why do I consider that a good thing? Because I was involved in an accident that wasn’t my fault. Victories are awesome, and so are small victories.”

8. Kevin Harvick: Harvick pulled away on the final restart and won at Michigan, snapping a 65-race winless streak and clinching a playoff spot.

“That’s a huge weight off my shoulders,” Harvick said, “and right onto Martin Truex’s and Ryan Blaney’s.

“And of course, my victory calls for a post-race celebratory meal of Hunt Brothers Pizza and Busch Light. And the next morning, I think it will hit me, that the implications of this win are astronomical and gastronomical.”

9. Christopher Bell: Bell started strong at Michigan, capturing Stage 1, but contact with Ross Chastain midway through Stage 3 left him with a damaged car. He eventually finished 26th.

“I’m disappointed,” Bell said. “I’m disappointed because I could have won the race, but mostly I’m disappointed because I was in an accident with Ross Chastain and it was my fault. That disappointment will soon become embarrassment because I’ll find myself in a situation in which Chastain has to teach me a lesson.”

10. Kyle Busch: Busch’s Sunday ended early when he was collected in a huge pileup after a lap 25 restart, one of 11 cars affected. Busch finished 36th and has now gone eight straight races without a top 10 finish.

“I just can’t buy any luck,” Busch said. “If I could buy any luck, it would be in the following manner: I would buy out the contract of J.J. Yeley and have him replaced with a competent driver. There’s no way my luck wouldn’t improve after that.”

Jr III Racing Scores Fourth at Road America

Elkhart Lake, Wisc. (7 August 2022) – Despite a weekend of challenges that included extreme temperatures, multiple caution periods, rain and changing conditions during the race, Jr III (“Junior Three”) Racing finished fourth at Road America at the IMSA Fastlane Weekend on Sunday.

Ari Balogh and Garett Grist faced the elements in the No. 30 Airbnb Ligier JS P320 as they made their way from seventh to fourth over the two hour and 40 minute race distance on the high speed 4-mile circuit in Wisconsin. The fourth place finish continues the pursued progress of the Charlotte-based IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar (IWSC) team, having made its debut in the top tier series at Road America in 2021.

Although precipitation didn’t fall much heavier than a mist, slide offs and the ensuing debris caused four total caution periods, with the first on lap 14. The first yellow brought Balogh to hand the car to Grist from fifth as he kept the No. 30 Airbnb Ligier clean and out of trouble during his stint.

By the third full course yellow, Grist had powered up through traffic from sixth to fourth, making an excellent move in the final hour of the race continually matching the speeds of his competitors.

Persistently battling for podium position, Grist pushed to stay with his opponents but had to settle just shy of the podium as he brought the Ligier home fourth in the order.

“It was a bit of a crazy race with lots of cautions and changing weather conditions,” said Grist. “Ari did an incredible job in his first stint keeping the car clean and staying on the track as a lot of other guys were going off and hitting other cars. Good start to the race in that way, but as the race went on, I struggled a bit with pace. I could stick with the cars ahead of me and then we would be even for a bit because we were similar, but I couldn’t get around them exactly. The team worked really hard this weekend and everything was perfectly prepared once again, so a great job by the crew all weekend. We’ll keep moving, keep testing and keep getting better.”

The North Carolina-based crew, which boasts a lot of team members with a range of competition experience including in the NASCAR ranks, developed several approaches to set-up through the weekend to try to keep up with the continually changing weather and track conditions.

“We did what we could this weekend,” said team owner Billy Glavin III. “We really tried to find the pace, but unfortunately, we never got exactly what we needed, especially with the red flags in the practice, we just didn’t have all the time we needed to get up to pace.”

Now third in the championship standings, Jr III Racing will compete again in the IWSC season finale at the Motul Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta on October 1.

KENNINGTON SCORES ANOTHER PODIUM FINISH AT GP3R

August 8, 2022. DJ Kennington and the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge team continued their run of success at round number nine of the 2022 NASCAR Pinty’s Series this past Sunday at the Grand Prix of Trois-Rivieres (GP3R) in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec. With a late race charge to a second place finish, Kennington also moved into the top spot in the overall championship point standings.

The #17 Castrol Edge Dodge team has been building momentum as the year progressed and following a strong Saturday practice session Kennington scored a seventh place starting spot during qualifying for the Les 60 Tours Rousseau Metals event Sunday afternoon.

The race start would be delayed due to showers and thunderstorms. Once they passed Kennington unleashed the power of the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge. Early in the race Kennington made his planned fuel stop and the team initially planned to make it their only pit stop of the day. However, a late strategy shift would prove to be a key decision.

With another caution period slowing the field late in the race, the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge team decided to make another pit stop for fresh tires and then let Kennington see what he could do in the closing laps.

The fresh rubber allowed Kennington to charge his way forward into the top five and that appeared to be their fate, until another caution set up a two-lap green, white checker dash to the finish of the event. In the final two laps the driver pushed the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge forward and snagged two more spots and came home in second position, the fourth podium finish of the year.

With his second-place finish at GP3R Kennington takes over the lead of the overall championship standings after nine races.

Erik Jones Post-Race Thoughts: “It was an up and down day for the FOCUSfactor Chevy. We had track position early and got up there towards the top five and just kind of got farther and farther back through the day a little bit. Lost the handle a bit toward the back half of the top ten and thankfully we got that late yellow and were able to make some changes and get a good restart with about 37 laps to go and drive back up to a top 10 finish. So, solid day, had a decent car and just needed to do things a little bit cleaner, little bit smoother and I think we could have had a better finish.”
