NASCAR CUP SERIES RACE #23 – MICHIGAN

Shifting from the left- and right-hand turns of a road course circuit to a 2-mile oval, the NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) and NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) head to Chevrolet’s home track: Michigan International Speedway (MIS). Located outside of “Motor City”, Detroit, the series’ trip to the manufacturers’ backyard has more than just the race win trophy on the line.

Drivers and teams will also be racing to deliver their manufacturer the Michigan Heritage Trophy. The prestigious award is a recognition and celebration of the history cars and manufacturers bring to the race track. Each year, the track recognizes the sport’s manufacturers by presenting the award to the winning manufacturer in the NCS race at MIS. Since the debut of the award in August 2013, Chevrolet has brought home the title six times.

Sitting in the Irish Hills of Southeastern Michigan, the 2-mile oval first hosted the NCS in June 1969 and has since held 104 races for NASCAR’s premier series. Chevrolet has recorded 26 trips to victory lane at MIS, most recently by reigning NCS Champion Kyle Larson in August 2017. The Michigan venue was also the track that delivered Larson his first career NCS win in August 2016; and to this date, the 30-year-old Hendrick Motorsports driver is one of just two drivers in the series’ history to record their first NCS win at the track.

Chevrolet will be pacing the field this weekend at MIS. The Camaro SS will be leading the NASCAR Xfinity Series in Saturday’s New Holland 250 and a Camaro ZL1 will pace the NASCAR Cup Series to the green in Sunday’s FireKeepers Casino 400.

A NASCAR SWEEP FOR THE BOWTIE

With all three NASCAR national series in competition in Indianapolis last weekend, each race saw a similar outcome: a Chevrolet-powered machine in victory lane. The bowtie brand’s weekend sweep kicked off with Grant Enfinger and the No. 23 GMS Racing Silverado RST team, taking the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) playoff opener win at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park. Road course master, AJ Allmendinger, captured his third NASCAR Xfinity Series road course win in 2022 with the No. 16 Kaulig Racing Camaro SS team at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course. Capping off the weekend at the 2.439-mile, 14-turn circuit was Tyler Reddick and the No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Camaro ZL1 team, who delivered Chevrolet its 10th consecutive NCS road course win.

This marks the second time this season that Chevrolet has swept the wins when all three NASCAR national series are in competition on the same weekend. This feat was also accomplished earlier in July when Parker Klingerman drove the No. 75 Henderson Racing Silverado RST to the win at Mid-Ohio (July 9, 2022); and hometown heroes Austin Hill and Chase Elliott took the NXS (July 9, 2022) and NCS (July 10, 2022) wins at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Chevrolet is the only manufacturer to achieve this feat in 2022 thus far.

CHEVROLET’S ROAD COURSE DOMINANCE: 10 IN A ROW

The month of July started out the same way it ended for Tyler Reddick and the No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet team. The 26-year-old Chevrolet driver followed up his first career NASCAR Cup Series win at Road America (July 3, 2022) with a second consecutive road course win, piloting his No. 8 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 to victory at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course last weekend. The win also made Richard Childress Racing the only organization in the series’ history to win on both the oval and road course circuit at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“I need to do everything I can to win as many races as possible for this group because I wouldn’t be the road course racer I am today if it wasn’t for RCR; if it wasn’t for the people on my team; if it wasn’t for Chevrolet,” said Reddick. “I owe it to them. I owe it to my team. I owe it to the people that really have helped me to get that done and go out there and deliver for them.”

Chevrolet has now recorded wins in 14 of the last 15 NCS road course races, including a streak of the past 10. That string of victories, which dates back to Chevrolet’s milestone 800th NCS win at Circuit of The Americas in May 2021, has been accomplished with wins recorded by six drivers from four different Chevrolet teams:

Chase Elliott, No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet:

(Circuit of The Americas; May 2021)

(Road America; July 2021)

Kyle Larson, No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet:

(Sonoma; June 2021)

(Watkins Glen; August 2021)

(Charlotte ROVAL; October 2021)

AJ Allmendinger, No. 16 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet:

(Indianapolis Road Course; August 2021)

Ross Chastain, No. 1 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet:

(Circuit of The Americas; March 2022)

Daniel Suarez, No. 99 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet:

(Sonoma Raceway; June 2022)

Tyler Reddick, No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet:

(Road America; July 2022)

(Indianapolis Road Course; July 2022)

“Tyler, Crew Chief Randall Burnett and the No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Camaro ZL1 team put together a strong weekend, clinching the pole on Saturday and racing hard and smart to bring home the win at the Brickyard,” said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet U.S. Vice President, Performance and Motorsports. “Tyler has been putting in a lot of work preparing for these road courses, and it has paid off.”

TEAM CHEVY NCS SCORECARD: FOUR TO GO

Leaving Chevrolet’s “home away from home” of Indianapolis, the bowtie brand is now standing at 13 wins of the 22 NASCAR Cup Series races completed, including six of the last seven races. With just four races remaining in the series’ regular season, Chevrolet’s series-leading win count gives the manufacturer a winning percentage of 59%. Notching another win, Chevrolet extended its lead in the NCS manufacturer points standings to 86 points over its manufacturer competitors.

Chevrolet’s Chase Elliott, who drove his No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Camaro ZL1 to two top-five stage finishes in Indianapolis, remains atop the NCS driver points standings, while also increasing his lead to 125-points over second. Elliott continues to prove to be a championship contender, leading the series in wins (four), playoff points (25), top-10 finishes (15) and laps led (658).

HILL TO MAKE CUP DEBUT

Austin Hill will be making his first-ever start in the NASCAR Cup Series this weekend at Michigan International Speedway, piloting the No. 33 Bennett Transportation Camaro ZL1, a third entry fielded by Richard Childress Racing. Hill moved up the ranks from the NCWTS to the NXS at the beginning of the 2022 season, competing full-time in the NXS behind the wheel of the No. 21 Chevrolet Camaro SS for Richard Childress Racing. In the Georgia native’s rookie season, Hill has already notched two victories and secured his spot into the 2022 NXS playoff field.

Hill has already experienced success at Michigan International Speedway, recording a NCWTS win at the track in 2019.

KING OF THE ROAD

Known for his mastery on road course circuits, AJ Allmendinger continued his dominance in turning left and right, taking the victory in Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series Pennzoil 150 at the Brickyard on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course.

Leading the field from the pole position, Allmendinger was forced to give up the lead after difficulties on a pit stop on lap 16. Powering his way back up the field, the 40-year-old California native went on to lead a race-high 42 of the 62-lap race to secure his series-leading ninth career NXS road course victory.

Allmendinger led a stout performance by the bowtie brigade, with Chevrolet drivers sweeping the top-four spots in the final running order with Alex Bowman (2nd), Justin Allgaier (3rd) and Ross Chastain (4th). The stage wins were also taken by Chevrolet drivers, with JR Motorsports teammates Noah Gragson and Josh Berry taking the Stage One and Two wins, respectively.

With 20 NXS races complete:

· Chevrolet has now recorded 14 victories, giving the bowtie brand a winning percentage of 70%.

· Following his third win of the season, AJ Allmendinger continues to lead in the NXS driver points standings, with a 17-point lead over second-place Justin Allgaier.

· Looking to captures its six consecutive NXS Manufacturer Championship title, Chevrolet remained on top of the NXS manufacturer standings, extending its lead to 94-points over second.

The NXS first made an appearance at Michigan International Speedway in August 1992, with Todd Bodine driving Chevrolet to victory lane in the inaugural event. The 2-mile Michigan venue has hosted the NXS 29 times, with Chevrolet scoring a manufacturer-leading 17 of those wins, including the last three (Austin Dillon – June 2018; Tyler Reddick – June 2019; AJ Allmendinger – August 2021).

ENFINGER ONTO ROUND OF EIGHT

Grant Enfinger and the No. 23 GMS Racing Silverado RST team started out the 2022 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) playoffs exactly how they had hoped. In the series’ return to the Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park, Enfinger swept the stage wins and went on to battle through an overtime finish to capture his first win of the season and an automatic advancement to the second round of the playoffs.

When a caution flew at lap 191, crew chief Jeff Hensley called Enfinger down pit road for a fresh set of tires.

On the final restart at lap 206 for an overtime finish, chaos among the leaders gave Enfinger the opportunity to make the winning pass and he never looked back. Taking the checkered flag for the seventh time in his NCWTS career, Enfinger’s win gave Chevrolet its fourth NCWTS win this season.

While an on-track incident late in the race resulted in a 21st-place finish for playoff contender Carson Hocevar, the driver of the No. 42 Niece Motorsports Silverado RST remains above the playoff cutline by seven points.

The NCWTS will be back in action at Richmond Raceway for the Worldwide Express 250 for Carrier Appreciation on Saturday, August 13. The 250-lap race at the .75-mile Virginia oval will mark the second of three races in the NCWTS Round of 10.

QUOTABLE QUOTES

ROSS CHASTAIN, NO. 1 ADVENT HEALTH CAMARO ZL1

How do you think Michigan will be this weekend with this style of car?

“I think it will be similar to how we have seen racing at Michigan in the past. It’ll be similar to what we saw at Auto Club this year with lifting off of the gas going in the corners and using different lanes.”

AUSTIN DILLON, NO. 3 DOW MOBILITYSCIENCE CAMARO ZL1

What are your thoughts on Michigan International Speedway?

“We had a strong Chevy at Michigan International Speedway last year, and I expect the same this year. I’m really looking forward to the race. Michigan is a place we’ve run well at in the past, and it’s a place we’ve circled to try and win and lock ourselves into the NASCAR Playoffs.”

KYLE LARSON, NO. 5 HENDRICKCARS.COM CAMARO ZL1

Larson on if racing will be similar to Auto Club Speedway earlier this year:

“I feel like the runs haven’t been quite as big as they were earlier in the year. I’m sure we will be able to draft, but the runs were huge at California. I don’t know if they’ll be quite that big at Michigan, and there will be less lane options when you get to the corner this weekend (compared to Auto Club Speedway).”

CLIFF DANIELS, CREW CHIEF, NO. 5 HENDRICKCARS.COM CAMARO ZL1

Daniels on what he is expecting at Michigan International Speedway:

“I think this weekend’s race has potential to go a couple different ways. Passing could be difficult – we’ll see what the resin does on the track. Certainly, we’ve come a long way as a sport since California. Michigan (International Speedway) tends to lean toward more straight forward racing, but the runs and the draft could be impactful.”

CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 9 UNIFIRST CAMARO ZL1

Elliott on the team’s outlook as we get closer to the playoffs:

“You have to be at the top of your game heading into the playoffs. We can’t let setbacks like last week get to us. We have to keep focusing on what we can control and having good execution and just keep improving. I need to make sure I’m doing my job inside the car. Those are the things we’re focusing on to make sure we’re peaking at the right time.”

ALAN GUSTAFSON, CREW CHIEF, NO. 9 UNIFIRST CAMARO ZL1

Gustafson on how to finish the regular season off on a high note and looking ahead to Michigan:

“I try not to attach that to the finishing position. You’ve got to say ‘Hey, how did we do in preparation for the race? How did the car run? How did we execute the race? How did we execute the pit stops?’ You can do all that really well and finish bad because you get crashed or something happens. So, I’d say after Nashville (Superspeedway), knowing with two wins we were going to be in the playoffs, from then on we just tried to set out some goals to try to be prepared for the playoffs. Developing things on the pit crew side and trying to improve the cars and making sure we’re in as good of shape as possible is really what we’re doing. I don’t think that Michigan (International Speedway) is one where we’re going to really use the setup in the playoffs, but I certainly think we can learn and apply some things. Texas (Motor Speedway) comes to mind a little bit. But really, we’re just trying to be the best we can be when it matters.”

WILLIAM BYRON, NO. 24 LIBERTY UNIVERSITY CAMARO ZL1

Byron on wanting to rewrite history at Michigan:

“Michigan (International Speedway) is a tricky track. You have to manage drafting on the straightaways but also the feeling that you’re always on the limit of grip. It’s almost like Daytona (International Superspeedway) but with characteristics of a mile-and-a-half track. It’s basically a hybrid track. Timing passes is also a major factor as well as it’s a very momentum-heavy track. Last year, we were leading on the last restart, but I blocked the run coming from the high lane and lost momentum and that took us out of contention with how few laps were left. I’ve been really close to winning a few times at Michigan (International Speedway). I’m trying to rewrite history this weekend and hopefully be able to finally pull out the win with how close I’ve been before. This is also an important track for manufacturers, and I would take a lot of pride to be able to go out there and get the win for Chevrolet.”

RUDY FUGLE, CREW CHIEF, NO. 24 LIBERTY UNIVERSITY CAMARO ZL1

Fugle on why he loves racing at Michigan:

“I really enjoy racing at Michigan (International Speedway). I feel like the whole weekend is just good, hard racing. It helps that there is usually always such a good fan showing, especially with the always packed infield of campers. I think the more fans in attendance, the more excitement it brings on race day and that’s a situation we thrive in. The racing isn’t quite pack racing, but there are some drafting elements, especially when it comes to making passes. You still need to have your car handling well, though, to make up any track position. It’s not extremely easy to pass, so you usually tend to see big moves made, especially on the restarts. It’s a race that tends to have pit strategy take place too, especially late in the going, just to make up that ground that is hard to do during a long run. I think it’s just a well-rounded type of racing and I’ve come so close to winning there so many times that this is a race I’ve had circled for this year.”

ERIK JONES, NO. 43 FOCUSFACTOR CAMARO ZL1

Michigan is a home track for both you and crew chief Dave Elenz. How important would a win be to both of you?

“You always want to run good when you go home and I think when we look at the remaining tracks, Michigan is one where we feel like we can win. So yea, multiple reasons it’s important to us. I feel like it’s going to be an opportunity for us to win and an opportunity to win at home as well. We want to take advantage of both of those things. Every time I go to Michigan, I just want to run well for friends, family, everybody there. Hopefully we’ll have a good showing.”

RICKY STENHOUSE JR., NO. 47 KROGER HEALTH / SWEETLEAF CAMARO ZL1

“The crazy thing with Michigan is the speeds are so high. You want to take the shortest distance around, but the bottom of the racetrack is flat. It has less banking. The top groove is more banked. Now we’ve got some of the traction compound that they have sprayed down. So, it has more grip, but it’s a longer distance around. The draft is really big, but you don’t want to really be tucked up behind a car once you get into a corner because you need all the air to be on your car. So, it’s tricky, it’s fun, it’s fast and we are really looking forward to it.”

ALEX BOWMAN, NO. 48 ALLY CAMARO ZL1

Bowman on his mindset heading to Michigan:

“I feel like we have had our struggles recently getting the finishes we are capable of getting. Our team does a great job of putting in the work during the week and getting the little details right. We just keep getting caught in other people’s messes. Greg (Ives, crew chief) did a great job of putting me in a good position to make a late-race push for the front in Indy (Motor Speedway Road Course) and then we were taken out of the race, so it’s been frustrating because our car was better than where we finished. Our team has a lot of fight, and this weekend will be no different – we will put a good strategy together and try to be there at the end on Sunday.”

GREG IVES, CREW CHIEF, NO. 48 ALLY CAMARO ZL1

Ives on heading to his home track this Sunday in Michigan:

“It’s always nice to go home and get to race in front of your family and friends. There is a little extra pressure having everyone there supporting you – you naturally want to perform on any given weekend but having your support system watching adds that extra bit but it makes the success you have feel that much better. Knowing that Ally and Chevy are based in Michigan sweetens the pot – we have a lot of reasons to go out there and put on a show and I know our team is capable of contending for a win.”

DANIEL SUAREZ, NO. 99 WORLDWIDE EXPRESS CAMARO ZL1

What do you expect at Michigan this weekend?

“I don’t think any of us really know what to expect. The new cars race good everywhere so I expect a good race. But Michigan is different than really everywhere else we have raced. It looks like Auto Club Speedway, but that track is bumpy where I expect Michigan will have more grip. It will be interesting.”

Describe what it takes for success at Michigan?

“Michigan is the kind of racetrack where you have to have a lot of straightaway speed and try to be as good as possible in the corners. You have to have a good downforce car in combination with drag to be able to go fast in the straightaways.”

What is your favorite Michigan memory?

“Michigan is where I got my first Xfinity win, so it’s special to me. You don’t forget moments like that. I just remember I didn’t have any words to describe how I was feeling at that moment. Nothing in Spanish or English.”

Rinus VeeKay inks multi-year extension with Ed Carpenter Racing

Photo by Adam Lovelace for SpeedwayMedia.com.

Ed Carpenter Racing announced that Rinus VeeKay has signed a multi-year contract extension to return as the driver of ECR’s No. 21 Dallara-Chevrolet in the NTT IndyCar Series, beginning in 2023.

The 21-year-old VeeKay from Hoofddorp, Netherlands, is currently campaigning in his third full-time season in the IndyCar circuit, all with ECR, where he is ranked in 11th place in the drivers’ standings on a strength of a single podium result after finishing third at Barber Motorsports Park from pole position in May and a total of six top-10 results.

“I am very excited to continue with Ed Carpenter Racing for what will be my fourth year in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES,” VeeKay said. “Ed Carpenter gave me the opportunity to drive for the team when I came out of Indy Lights and has let me showcase my talents in an Indy car ever since. The continuity at ECR is great. There have barely been any changes in my time here, and it’s very nice to have the same group of people around me all the time. We have been stepping up our game every season, and with the support of Todd Ault and BitNile, we can really move forward as we head into 2023.”

VeeKay, whose racing career started with karts, made his inaugural presence in the IndyCar circuit at the start of the 2020 season when he was signed by Ed Carpenter Racing to pilot the No. 21 Chevrolet. By then, he was the 2018 champion of the F3 Asian Winter Series, the reigning Pro Mazda champion and runner-up in the 2019 Indy Lights championship standings.

In his first full-time campaign in the IndyCar Series, VeeKay achieved his maiden podium after finishing third in the first of an IndyCar Harvest GP doubleheader weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course in October as he went on to capture the 2020 IndyCar Rookie-of-the-Year title. Five events into the 2021 season, he notched his first IndyCar career victory in the GMR Grand Prix on Indy’s road course in May. To go along with a runner-up result in first of a Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix doubleheader feature on The Raceway at Belle Isle, Michigan, in June, he went on to finish 12th in the final standings, two spots better than 2020 (14th).

Through 42 previous starts in the IndyCar Series, VeeKay has achieved a single victory, two poles, four podiums, 180 laps led and an average-finishing result of 13.3.

“I am so happy to be able to extend our relationship with Rinus,” Ed Carpenter, ECR team owner, added. “He is an extremely versatile and talented driver. It has been and remains our hope to build our team to new heights with Rinus helping lead the charge. Our goals and expectations are to win races and to compete for championships. With Rinus’s growth and the support from BitNile and Todd Ault, we are primed for success.”

With his plans for the future set, VeeKay is set to compete in the upcoming Big Machine Music City Grand Prix at Nashville Street Circuit on Sunday, August 7, with the event’s coverage scheduled to commence at 3 p.m. ET on NBC.

Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Customer Racing Teams and Drivers Carry Championship Leads to Road America

Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Customer Racing Entrants Team Korthoff Motorsports and Capstone Motorsports Bring Series Championship Leads to the IMSA Fastlane SportsCar Weekend at Road America, August 4 – 7

ELKHART LAKE, Wisconsin – Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Customer Racing teams lead two IMSA championships and a pair of teammates are in top-three contention in another title race heading into the IMSA Fastlane SportsCar Weekend at Road America, August 4 – 7. Team Korthoff Motorsports and driver Stevan McAleer bring a 40-point lead in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar GT Daytona (GTD) championship to Road America while co-drivers Gary Ferrera and Kris Wilson lead the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Bronze Cup standings heading into the weekend in the No. 11 Capstone Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT4 with victories in five of the year’s first seven races. The Road America weekend kicks-off a critical stretch run in both IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GTD and the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge series that will see the championships in both series decided over the course of the next three races.

A total of nine Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Customer Racing teams compete this weekend at Road America, and more than half of them lead or are in top-three contention in one of several different championships across both the IMSA WeatherTech Championship and IMSA Pilot Challenge series.

McAleer and the No. 32 Team Korthoff Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT3 team extended their nearly season-long GTD championship lead three weeks ago at Lime Rock Park. McAleer and co-driver Mike Skeen finished fourth after being edged for the final podium spot in the last turn of the race when another competitor slowed in front of the field with the checkered flag in sight.

Despite the disappointment of missing out on the top three in the final seconds, the fourth-place result is Team Korthoff’s best finish in IMSA GTD competition since a season-best second place showing at the 12 Hours of Sebring in March.

The Korthoff No. 32 is one of a class-leading three Mercedes-AMG GT3 entries competing in the GTD division in Sunday’s featured two-hour and 40-minute IMSA WeatherTech Championship race. Round 8 of 10 in this year’s GTD championship, the race starts at 10:40 a.m. CDT Sunday with live coverage on NBC’s online network Peacock. Broadcast coverage begins just 20 minutes later when the race will be joined live and in progress on the USA Network at 11 a.m. CDT/Noon EDT.

The No. 57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 and No. 79 WeatherTech Racing Proton USA Mercedes-AMG GT3 also carry the Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Customer Racing flag in Sunday’s race.

Russell Ward and Philip Ellis co-drive the Winward No. 57 with an aim on securing the team’s first GTD win of the season after coming excruciatingly close in the last two WeatherTech championship points races. Winward took the white flag leading at both Watkins Glen International and Lime Rock but didn’t get the win at either race due to just missing an adjusted drive time rule at The Glen and a mechanical issue with the checkered flag in sight at Lime Rock.

A second-place finish in the GTD Sprint Cup-only race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park split the pair of near-miss races, and Ward, Ellis and all on the No. 57 team arrive at Road America confident and positive after the strong on-track performances in the second half of the season.

Chicago-based Cooper MacNeil and WeatherTech Racing are set for their home-track race Sunday at Road America. MacNeil will be joined in the No. 79 for the fourth time this season by Daniel Juncadella who is fresh off co-driving a Mercedes-AMG GT3 to victory in last weekend’s 24 Hours of Spa in Belgium. Juncadella was also part of Team Korthoff’s second place GTD finish at Sebring and looks for a similar result with MacNeil and WeatherTech Racing at Road America.

In Michelin Pilot Challenge Grand Sport (GS) competition, Capstone comfortably leads the Bronze Cup standings while all three of Murillo Racing’s Mercedes-AMG GT4 teams rank in the top three of their respective championship battles.

Saturday’s Pilot Challenge race is scheduled to start at 1:15 p.m. CDT and is the second and final four-hour race of the year following January’s season-opener at Daytona International Speedway (DIS).

Murillo’s sister No. 56 and No. 72 Mercedes-AMG GT4 entries are second and third, respectively, in the overall GS championship standings and look to Road America to rebound from a challenging Lime Rock race.

Two-time 2022 Pilot Challenge race winner Eric Foss co-drives the No. 56 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4 again this weekend with Kenton Koch. The duo won at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in May and two races later Foss scored his second win of the season co-driving with Marc Miller at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

Despite suffering their only race retirement of the season at Lime Rock, Foss and the No. 56 team still hold second in the GS championship, one spot ahead of teammates Kenny Murillo and Christian Szymczak in the No. 72 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4.

Murillo and Szymczak moved into third in the GS standings on the strength of a third place at Watkins Glen in June and a second-place finish behind their No. 56 teammates Fourth of July weekend in Canada.

New for the 2022 season, the Bronze Cup class is designed to let sportsman or “am” drivers battle each other in a separate championship while still competing in the overall GS race. Ferrera, Wilson and Capstone will likely seal the inaugural Bronze Cup crown before the end of the season, but No. 65 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4 teammates Brent Mosing and Tim Probert remain alive in the bronze battle with three races to go.

Mosing and Probert co-drove to the Bronze Cup win one race ago at Lime Rock for the second time this season after winning at Mid-Ohio in May. Along with Capstone’s five wins, the Lime Rock victory gave the Mercedes-AMG GT4 a perfect seven-for-seven win record this season in the new Bronze Cup division.

The top Mercedes-AMG GT4 finisher in the Pilot Challenge race at Lime Rock was the No. 55 FCP Euro by Ricca Autosport Mercedes-AMG GT4 co-driven by Skeen and Trevor Andrusko. The team has made the most of a limited schedule this year, earning a top-five in just the No. 55’s second start of the season at The Glen and improving to fourth at Lime Rock. Skeen jumped to fourth from fifth on the final lap at Lime Rock for the FCP Euro team’s best finish in just its third race in a select schedule of events this season.

The sixth Mercedes-AMG GT4 competing at Road America is the returning trio of Anton Dias Perera and his pro-driver teammates Scott Andrews and Colin Braun. The trio last shared a Mercedes-AMG GT4 in the four-hour race at Daytona in 2021 and make their return with winning Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Customer Racing team Riley Motorsports.

Campaigning a Mercedes-AMG GT3, Braun and the Riley team currently lead the Fanatec GT World Challenge America point standings with George Kurtz. Andrews also has Mercedes-AMG GT3 experience and was part of the driver lineup that scored Korthoff’s breakout third-place finish in January’s Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Stevan McAleer, Driver – No. 32 Team Korthoff Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT3: “This is my first year in GTD and I am super excited to be here. I love this class and it is great to be part of the Mercedes-AMG GT3 team with Team Korthoff Motorsports. Just three races left of the season. Road America is next on the schedule and will for sure be a lot of fun in the Mercedes-AMG GT3 GTD car. I think the track will suit the Mercedes-AMG GT3, but it is going to be a strategy game, and it usually ends up being a fuel mileage game as well. Then you throw in the other classes. I am sure it is going to be action packed to say the least. I am learning a lot this year, a couple more races to go, and I will see if I can hang on.”

Russell Ward, Driver – No. 57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3: “Road America is a track that really suits the Mercedes-AMG GT3 very well. It should be a really good track for us. We are just going to carry the momentum we have had at the last three IMSA races. We can definitely do that, the team is ready for it, and everyone is looking forward. The last three IMSA races we have essentially had two firsts and a second, but it is just a matter of time before we actually get the official result. As we get in the closing stages of the year, we are through with the tough part of the season up in the Northeast. Now we are moving on to Road America, VIR and Road Atlanta and our spirits are high.”

Cooper MacNeil, Driver – No. 79 WeatherTech Racing Proton USA Mercedes-AMG GT3: “Road America is my favorite track, with Le Mans a close second. I was up in Elkhart Lake in May getting in some laps as I prepared for Le Mans and to get reacclimated for the IMSA race. The racing in the GTD category is always extremely close. Our Mercedes-AMG GT3 likes the high-speed sections like the Kink, Carrousel, and Turn 7. We will see how we stack up pretty quickly in that first practice on Friday.”

Daniel Juncadella, Driver – No. 79 WeatherTech Racing Proton USA Mercedes-AMG GT3: “Spa was very amazing, a big race, big win and a good time to come to America to race again. I have heard such great things about Road America, I have never been there, but I know the track very well online, a bit like Mosport and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, where I was straight away very quick, so I don’t think I am going to need many laps to get up to speed. The track at Road America is pretty impressive, and not far from Chicago, which I will get to know for the first time, so I am very excited for the week coming up. It’s the home track for WeatherTech, and Cooper has always talked a good bit about this one. He is very motivated for this event because it is the home track, so we will see where we go. I am very excited for this one.”

Brent Mosing, Driver – No. 65 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4: “I love Road America. It’s the best and the most fun place to visit, I love Elkhart Lake and I love the Road America track itself. It’s a flowing track, a fast, flowing track that tends to be what I accel in. We are going in there with a positive attitude. We are going to have fun but race hard and see where we end up. The Mercedes-AMG GT4 is really good at Road America. You have some heavy, heavy brake zones, and the car is awesome on the brakes and great in the turns. We are looking forward to this weekend and I think it is going to be a great run.”

Tim Probert, Driver – No. 65 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4: “With two wins behind us now, we will really be pushing hard in the final three races. It starts with Road America and the second and last four-hour race of the year. We really enjoy the four-hour races. A lot of strategy comes into play. As I always say, this is a real team sport, and everyone has more of a part to play in a four-hour race. We really enjoy that very much. For a couple of Bronze-rated guys, we are reasonably fit and looking forward to this weekend’s challenge.”

Trevor Andrusko, Driver – No. 55 FCP Euro by Ricca Autosport Mercedes-AMG GT4: “Sebring was more or less of a shakedown for us in in our 2022 debut just to make sure everything was set as we run this condensed schedule. At Watkins Glen the pace was there, we were able to put something together, and we ran in the top five until the end of the race. We brought that to Lime Rock, the home track, home race and home event for FCP Euro, and we qualified and finished well there too. Using all of that momentum into Road America is good for us. We have to focus on the strategy, because it is our longest race of the year, but Mike and I will do it as a duo, no third driver, and we feel like we will have the pace with this Mercedes-AMG GT4 to be in it at the finish.”

Monster Energy Racing: Riley Herbst Michigan NXS Advance

RILEY HERBST
Michigan NASCAR Xfinity Series Advance
No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing

NASCAR Xfinity Series Overview

• Event: Michigan 250 (Round 21 of 33)
• Date: Saturday, Aug. 6
• Location: Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn
• Layout: 2-mile oval
• Time/TV/Radio: 3:30 p.m. EDT on USA/MRN/SiriusXM NASCAR Radio

Riley Herbst Notes of Interest

• While Riley Herbst is still on the hunt for his first career NASCAR Xfinity Series victory, the 23-year-old racer is already a winner at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn. Herbst scored his second career ARCA Menards Series win in August 2020 at Michigan. He started from the pole and led four times for 39 laps to take the victory by 1.456 seconds over runner-up Bret Holmes. In a prelude to that win, Herbst finished second in his second career ARCA start at Michigan in June 2018, starting eighth and leading seven laps.

• The Michigan 250 will mark Herbst’s 97th career Xfinity Series start and his third at Michigan. He came home seventh in last year’s race, threading his way through a multicar accident and three attempts at a green-white-checkered finish. In total, Herbst has 14 top-fives and 47 top-10s dating back to his first career Xfinity Series start on June 17, 2018, at Iowa Speedway in Newton, where he finished an impressive sixth as a 19-year-old.

• Herbst scored his most recent top-10 last Saturday on the 2.439-mile, 14-turn road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It was an impressive effort, as Herbst battled back from a late-race spin to finish sixth. It was his best result at Indianapolis and his 13th top-10 of the season. In fact, in the 20 races run this year, Herbst has equaled or bettered his best finish at a track nine times, and he has already matched his season-best result of five top-fives (2021) and is four top-10s away from meeting his career-best tally of 17 top-10s, earned in 2020.

• With only six races remaining before the playoffs begin Sept. 24 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Herbst is fighting to protect his spot in the 12-driver playoff field. He is currently ninth in the driver standings with 555 points, 134 ahead of Sheldon Creed, the first driver below the playoff cutoff line. A win would clinch a playoff spot for Herbst, but he can defend his playoff position by continuing to collect top-fives and top-10s through the regular-season finale Sept. 16 at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.

Riley Herbst, Driver of the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang

Michigan has been a successful track for you in the ARCA Menards Series. In August 2020, you started on the pole and led four times en route to your second career ARCA win. Talk about that win and what it meant to you.

“It was so cool to win in ARCA at Michigan. It’s such a fun and fast track, but it’s also difficult and you can get into trouble really fast. I had the opportunity to get behind the wheel in ARCA when Xfinity didn’t race there in 2020 and I started on the pole. We ended up in victory lane by the end of the 100 laps, leading laps along the way. It was a good day. Hopefully, I can repeat that this weekend. This No. 98 Monster Energy team deserves to be in victory lane.”

Only six races remain until the playoffs begin at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth. What’s the plan in these final regular-season races?

“We need to protect our spot, but also we’re still in it to win races. A win would put all the worry of points racing aside. Michigan is a track that I had circled on my calendar, but there are a few tracks before the playoffs where I think we could get it done. Richard (Boswell, crew chief) is always keeping an eye on that point advantage. We work together to make sure we know when to take a risk and when to play it safe. There has to be a good balance between the two, but we’re here to win.”

The No. 98 team has shown improvement and speed in practice and qualifying over the past few months, a fact highlighted by your second career pole in June at Nashville. How have you worked to improve in these areas?

“We’ve had to dial in and really take advantage of these sessions. It’s important where you start these races, and we want to start up front and stay there. This is an area where we struggled at the start of the season, and I think you can see that we’ve improved overall. There’s still work that we need to do, but we’re unloading fast Monster Energy Ford Mustangs and that’s what’s important.”

Greg Van Alst and Team Head To Michigan Back on Track

BROOKLYN, Mich: After returning to top-10 status in the ARCA Menards Series’ most recent race last weekend at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park, Greg Van Alst and his team trek to the Irish Hills of Brooklyn, Michigan looking to build more momentum in Saturday night’s Henry Ford Health 200.

Heading into last Friday night’s Reese’s 200, Van Alst raced at the famed Brownsburg, Indiana short track looking for a change of pace after a few weeks of struggle with his No. 35 Greg Van Alst Motorsports Ford Mustang.

Throughout the 200-lap race, Van Alst and his all-volunteer team treaded the waters of a very competitive short track race and moved inside the top-10 in the closing laps to earn his sixth top-10 finish of 2022.

“It was important for our team to get back inside the top-10 after a couple of tough races at Mid-Ohio and Pocono,” said Van Alst. “We’ve made some gains with our short track program throughout the year but we still have room for improvement.

“We are focused on getting to Michigan for Saturday afternoon’s race, but in the back of my mind, I’m thinking down the road what we have to do to be better for the stretch drive.”

The Anderson, Indiana native invades his Michigan return looking to duplicate or better his sixth-place ARCA finish at the 2.0-mile oval he achieved last summer. Michigan was one of three top-10 finishes he earned during the season in which he ran part-time.

Stepping up to the plate and running full-time this season, Van Alst has showcased a lot of speed in his intermediate and speedway program and the No. 35 CB Fabricating Racing team is eager to get back to Brooklyn, Michigan with the intentions of delivering their second top-five run of 2022.

“I had a blast at Michigan last year,” Van Alst said. “It’s a very wide track with a lot of character and brilliant speeds. I thought last year that Michigan was one of our best showings on a bigger race track and I’d love nothing more than leave the track on Saturday night with another top-10 or maybe even a top-five added to our tally.”

Van Alst has repaired the primary No. 35 CB Fabricating Ford Fusion the team attempted to utilize in last month’s General Tire Delivers 200 at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway, but after a practice crash – the seasoned driver was forced to revert to a backup short track car which resulted in a hard-fought 15th-place finish.

“A lot of hard work by the team has allowed us to get the Pocono fixed and ready to go this weekend and that’s amazing,” sounded Van Alst. “We had a hard hit at Pocono but we know that this car is one of the better cars in our fleet and luckily we were able to get the body and suspension fixed and I feel like we can go to Michigan and contend for our first top-five since finishing fifth at Charlotte in May.

“That seems like forever ago. We are getting to the point where it will be crunch time in the ARCA Menards Series. Three months of racing will go by fast. I wouldn’t say that we are out of the woods for the championship yet, but we need to pick up the pace considerably to catch the top three in points.

“We won’t worry about points though. We’ll stay focused on speed and a strong performance and hope that the points will take care of themselves as the season plays out. We conquered a lot of goals so far this year, so no matter what happens – I’m proud of our team, my guys for everything they have done and continue to do for me and our primary partner CB Fabricating.”

Chris Barkdull’s CB Fabricating, a longtime partner with Greg Van Alst Motorsports has boosted its commitment to the team and will continue its role as the primary marketing partner of Van Alst’s No. 35 Ford Fusion.

Headquartered in Anderson, Ind., CB Fabricating offers a complete list of fabricating from design, laser cutting, CNC punching, forming, welding, powder coating, and assembly.

Their 26,000-square-foot facility allows them to service the needs of many different industries. Everything from the Automotive, agricultural, aquatic, medical, transportation, electrical enclosures, and much more.

“We are just past the halfway point of the 2022 ARCA Menards Series season and the consistency we have shown over the last two months is the type of pace that will keep Chris and everyone on this team in it for the long haul,” expressed Van Alst. “Everyone left Lucas Oil Raceway relieved to get back inside the top-10 at a place that we had a lot of support.

“Michigan is another chance and another opportunity to turn heads. We have even bigger goals that we’d like to conquer in the second half of the season and I know that keeps Chris and I excited about the path and longevity of our team.

“With every race complete, even if it is not the finish we are hoping for, it’s a small victory for our team knowing the large mountain that is still left to climb. I’m thankful to have the support of Chris and CB Fabricating.”

It’s not going to come without some luck and strong finishes, but we are not going to go down without a fight. This is a tough series and we are still proud of where we are at.

Raceway Gives, the charitable arm of World Wide Technology Raceway, collecting donations of cleaning supplies for eastern Kentucky flood victims

August 3, 2022 (St. Louis) – Last week’s record rainfall and subsequent flooding dramatically impacted the lives of people in our own community as well as those in eastern Kentucky. Both areas suffered devastating damage and the communities are rallying together to rebound. Raceway Gives, the charitable arm of World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois, is collecting donations of cleaning items to send to the flood victims of eastern Kentucky.

While our local community is pitching in to take care of our neighbors in the St. Louis-Metro East region, we want to make everyone aware that what has happened in eastern Kentucky can only be described as devastating. The eastern Kentucky area affected by the deadly flood is the hometown of several current and former members of our WWTR staff, as well as the current home of many of our special-event staff members. As of 12 p.m. today, the death toll in that area stood at 37 with hundreds remaining unaccounted for.

Raceway Gives is working to help our many friends and family in that region. On Friday, August 5, a truck with supplies will leave WWTR to deliver the necessary items collected by our employees, fans, and the racing community.

Items needed include baby formula, disinfecting wipes, chlorine bleach, liquid cleaners, laundry detergent, five-gallon buckets, square shovels, mops, heavy-duty trash bags, and plastic totes with lids.

For those who would like to make a charitable contribution to the relief effort, Raceway Gives will provide a receipt for tax-deductible contributions. Donations may be dropped off at the WWTR ticket office at 700 Raceway Blvd. in Madison. Tax-deductible contributions may be mailed to: Raceway Gives, P.O. Box 200, Madison, Illinois 62060, memo: EKY Flood Relief Effort.

Donation boxes will be onsite during future WWTR events including the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 Weekend for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES as well as the NHRA Midwest Nationals on September 30-October 2.

The vision of Raceway Gives’ (racewaygives.org, @RacewayGives) is to capitalize on motorsports technology emphasis and World Wide Technology Raceway facilities to create educational and career opportunities allowing all children in the greater St Louis region to accomplish their dreams while providing long-term regional economic impact. Engage industry stakeholders to broaden the motorsports audience, increase youth and minority participation, introduce career opportunities in the motorsports industry.

Extreme E shortlisted for SVG Sustainability in Sports TV award

4 August 2022, London: A huge number of entries were received by SVG this year from all around Europe. The coveted accolade recognises and rewards individuals, companies, projects, or initiatives from across the sports broadcasting and production sector that can demonstrate an impactful contribution to the transition to a net-zero carbon and zero waste society.

As a sport that is built out of social purpose, but with racing at its core, Extreme E utilises its platform to promote electrification, sustainability and gender equality. Racing in remote locations damaged by climate change or human interference, the carton-neutral series aims to maximise awareness around these critical issues, whilst minimising the environmental impact.

Ali Russell, Chief Marketing Officer at Extreme E, said, “We are delighted to have reached the list of finalists for SVG’s One Planet Award for Sustainability in Sports TV.

“Nothing beats recognition of the incredible hard work that we at Extreme E and our teams and partners have all done in highlighting environmental issues and promoting sustainability whilst at the same time delivering a thrilling racing spectacle to millions of viewers around the world.

“Extreme E’s entire ethos was born out of a mission to race without a trace and everywhere we go, we work to restore the degraded environments in which we race via our legacy programmes. We are also immensely proud to have officially become a carbon neutral race series – a momentous goal which we have managed to achieve in less than two years of racing.”

James Pearce, Partnerships Director at Aurora Media Worldwide, said: “From the outset it was clear that Extreme E’s mission statement and entire championship ethos was going to set a new bar for the industry. We knew as their production partner we had to set new sustainability standards and treat this production in a unique way.

“Through innovation, technology and strong partnerships with Extreme E and our trusted suppliers, we have been able to deliver a world-first remote and cutting-edge entertainment product with sustainability and Extreme E’s purpose driven mission at its heart. The production is acknowledged as a three-star Albert – Carbon Neutral Sustainable Production, a status we are hugely proud of.

“We are grateful to be on this journey with Extreme E and the industry recognition drives us forward to continue improving our processes and affecting industry change.”

Winners of the SGV Sports TV Awards will be announced in a ceremony at the DeLaMar Theatre in Amsterdam on Thursday 8 September.

About Extreme E:

Extreme E is a radical new racing series, which will see electric SUVs competing in extreme environments around the world which have already been damaged or affected by climate and environmental issues. The five-race global voyage highlights the impact of climate change and human interference in some of the world’s most remote locations and promotes the adoption of electric vehicles in the quest for a lower carbon future for the planet.

To minimise local impact, Extreme E races will not be open to spectators, with fans instead invited to follow the action through live TV broadcast, and on social media.

The St. Helena, a former passenger cargo ship, has undergone a multi-million Euro refit to minimise emissions and transform her into Extreme E’s operations hub. The ship will be used to transport the championship’s freight and infrastructure, including vehicles, to the nearest port, minimising Extreme E’s footprint, as well as being used to facilitate scientific research through its on-board laboratory.

Extreme E is also pioneering hydrogen fuel cell technology which will enable its race fleet to be charged using zero emission energy. This innovative solution from AFC Energy uses water and sun to generate hydrogen power. Not only will this process emit no greenhouse emissions, its only by-product will be water, which will be utilised elsewhere on-site.

Do I Need to Contact the Police After a Motorcycle Accident in California?

Photo by Donald Giannatti on Unsplash

If you are involved in a motorcycle accident, it’s important to know what steps to take afterward – both for your safety and to ensure you can receive compensation for damages. One of the crucial things to do after any accident is to contact the police and file a report. Particularly in the case of a motorcycle accident, you will want law enforcement to investigate and document what happened.

In California, you are required by law to file a police report if the accident caused any injuries or fatalities. If the accident only caused damage to your motorcycle, you may not be required to file a report, but it’s still a good idea since it can be important evidence if you need to file an insurance claim or sue the other party.

Reporting to Police

Within 24 hours of the accident, you should go to the nearest police department or California Highway Patrol (CHP) office to file your report. Usually, the police will come to the accident scene if it’s reported that there are injuries or fatalities. But, if the accident only caused property damage, you would likely need to go to the police station to file your report.

To qualify for a DMV, resulting damages should amount to a minimum of $1,000, in addition to injuries or fatalities. You need to do this within 10 days after the incident, even if police appeared at the scene. This can be done by mail, online, or in person at DMV offices.

What to Expect

Similar to most states, the police report will document basic information about the accident, such as the date, time, and location of the accident; the names, addresses, and driver’s license numbers of those involved; the insurance information for all parties; and a description of the vehicles involved. The motorcycle accident police report will also note any citations that were given at the scene of the accident. These could be for traffic violations, such as speeding, or for mechanical violations, such as having defective brakes. The police report will not, however, assign fault for the accident. That will be up to you, your insurance company, or the court, if you end up filing a lawsuit.

Engaging an Attorney

Depending on the severity of the accident, consider hiring a motorcycle accident attorney to help you understand your legal rights. If the accident caused serious injuries, you will require assistance to navigate the complex insurance claims process and, if necessary, file a personal injury lawsuit. An attorney can also help if the police report is inaccurate or if the other driver is trying to blame you for the accident, even though you weren’t at fault.

Conclusion

In short, you should always contact the police after a motorcycle accident, especially if there are injuries or fatalities. If the accident only caused damage to your motorcycle, you may not be required to file a report, but it’s still a good idea. An attorney will clarify your legal rights and is your best option for receiving fair compensation.
