Weekend Format

· The traditional weekend format returns this weekend at Pocono, with group practice set for Saturday afternoon, immediately followed by qualifying.

Keselowski at Pocono Raceway

· Keselowski is in line for his 25th Cup start from Pocono this weekend. In 24 prior starts he has one win, 15 top-10s and an average finish of 10.6.

· His win came back in the 2011 season where he led 19 laps after starting 13th. Dating back six races overall, Keselowski has six-straight finishes inside the top-10, including a P2 finish in 2019 (one of his four runner-up results overall), and a third-place run last year.

· Keselowski also carries an average starting position of 11.3 with one pole (2016) and 11 starts inside the top-10.

· Outside of Cup action, Keselowski made one start each in the Xfinity and Truck Series, winning the 2017 Xfinity race in the No. 22.

Matt McCall at Pocono Raceway

· McCall will be on the box for his 15th Cup race at Pocono. He has two prior top-10s and a best finish of sixth (2021 – Kurt Busch).

· He and Busch ran sixth and 20th in the doubleheader a season ago at The Tricky Triangle. McCall’s other top-10 came back in 2015 in his first-ever Cup race there with Jamie McMurray.

“There’s obviously not a ton of experience with the new car at Pocono. From what I understand the cars can get really loose off the corners, so trying to manage that is going to be tricky, but will make it fun as well. NASCAR Cup Series Points Race on NBC During Fourth of July Weekend

IMSA to Join Cup Series for NASCAR Chicago Street Race Weekend of Competition and Entertainment in Downtown Chicago on July 1-2, 2023

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 19, 2022) – For the first time ever, the sights, sounds and speed of NASCAR are coming to the streets of downtown Chicago on July 1-2, 2023. One of the most iconic cities in the world, Chicago will add another chapter to its illustrious sports history when a NASCAR Cup Series street race debuts against the backdrop of Lake Michigan and Grant Park, televised on NBC.

“Like the Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum, we seized an incredible opportunity to add an unprecedented element to our schedule and take center stage in the heart of another major metropolitan market,” said Ben Kennedy, NASCAR senior vice president of racing development and strategy. “This is the ideal setting for the first-ever NASCAR Cup Series street race. The NASCAR Cup Series Next Gen cars and the IMSA machines will race along the shores of Lake Michigan in downtown Chicago, marking a truly historic moment for our sport. We are very appreciative of Mayor Lori Lightfoot and her team, along with the entire City of Chicago for working with us to make this concept a reality.”

The first-ever NASCAR Cup Series street course race will take place on Sunday, July 2, 2023, and will be preceded by an IMSA sanctioned series race, which will run on Saturday, July 1, 2023. The specific IMSA series joining the NASCAR Cup Series in Chicago will be announced at a later date. Both races will be surrounded by music and entertainment options for all ages, truly making it one of the signature sporting and entertainment events of the year.

Lightfoot. “I am thrilled to welcome our partners at NASCAR to Chicago for an event that will attract thousands of people to our city. Lake Shore Drive, Michigan Avenue, Columbus Drive and select surrounding thoroughfares will be transformed into a 12-turn, 2.2-mile street course, with the start/finish line and pit road located along South Columbus Drive directly in front of Buckingham Fountain. The course will pass through the famed Grant Park, as well as approach the northern edge of Soldier Field, one of the most notable and recognizable sports venues in the country – and the site of the only other Cup Series race to take place in Downtown Chicago, in 1956.

The Story on Corey:

Corey Heim and the No. 51 JBL team head to Pocono Raceway for Saturday’s CRC Brakleen 150. While this weekend’s race will be his first start in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series at “The Tricky Triangle,” he has visited victory lane there in the ARCA Menards Series. Heim led 17 laps en route to victory in last year’s race and finished fourth in the 2019 event, giving him an average finish of 2.5 across his two ARCA Menards starts at Pocono.

Across eight Truck Series starts this season, Heim has produced two wins, two poles, 64 laps led, two top-five and three top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 19.5. The Georgia native picked up his first career Truck Series victory in just his fifth start earlier this season at Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway in March and was also victorious in June at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway. He has led at least one lap in five of his eight starts this season and qualified inside the top five for each of his last six starts, including two poles. He’s one of just three drivers to earn multiple pole awards this season. John Hunter Nemechek leads the series with four, while Ty Majeski also has two.

With two victories across his first 10 Truck Series starts, the 19-year-old driver became one of just 12 drivers in series history to net multiple victories in their first 10 starts. Kasey Kahne and Mike Skinner each produced five victories, Mark Martin collected four wins, Ron Hornaday Jr., Ted Musgrave and William Byron brought home three checkered flags and Heim, Kyle Busch, Erik Jones, Rich Bickle, Clint Bowyer and Tony Stewart all delivered two wins.

Heim is competing for the 2022 Truck Series Sunoco Rookie of the Year award. Despite only having competed in eight of the 15 events so far this season, he leads the standings by five points over Lawless Alan. Heim will look to join three other KBM drivers that have won the award, reigning winner Chandler Smith, William Byron (2016) and Erik Jones (2015).

In addition to his part-time Truck Series schedule Heim is competing in a six-race schedule for Venturini Motorsports in the ARCA Menards Series. Heim led 74 of 90 laps en route to the victory at Daytona in February to pick up his eighth career ARCA Menards Series victory. Across 40 career ARCA Menards Series starts he has produced 659 laps led, 29 top-five and 38 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 4.4. Heim finished second to Ty Gibbs in the 2021 ARCA Menards Series championship standings.

Mardy Lindley returned to KBM for his second season atop the pit box of the No. 51 team. Lindley has led his team to six wins since coming to KBM at the start of the 2021 season, including two with Heim and one with Kyle Busch this year. In 2021, his drivers produced three victories, two with Busch and one with Martin Truex Jr. Before arriving at KBM, Lindley guided his drivers to 32 wins and four ARCA Menards Series East championships since 2013, including back-to-back titles with Sam Mayer the last two seasons. Additionally, he earned the ARCA Menards Series Sioux Chief Showdown championship with Mayer in 2020. Behind the wheel, the second-generation driver won 11 races on the Pro Cup Series from 2000 to 2006 and was crowned the series champion in 2001. Lindley’s lone Truck Series race at Pocono resulted in a runner-up finish with Kyle Busch last year. He also has one ARCA Menards Series race at Pocono, a third-place finish with Mayer in 2020.

The No. 51 team is tied for the series lead with three wins this season. Via Heim’s two victories, they are locked into the owner’s portion of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series playoffs that begin July 29 at Lucas Oil Indianapolis (Ind.) Raceway Park.

JBL, the authority in engineering superior sound, returns to KBM for an eighth season and will be the primary sponsor on Heim’s Toyota for 11 races this season including Saturday’s race at Pocono. You’ve won an ARCA race at Pocono, does that give you confidence heading into the Truck Series race there?
“I’ve had two ARCA starts there in the past and any track that I’ve had prior experience at helps give me an upper hand with the overall experience that it takes. Kansas and Daytona and tracks like that, tracks that I’ve got laps at, it really helps me going into those races. So, I’m really looking forward to this weekend with my JBL Tundra TRD Pro.”

What is the trickiest part about “The Tricky Triangle?”
“I think that track changes every year and gets a little more abrasive throughout time and the tunnel turn gets more and more bumpy. It’s definitely going to change this year with the resin that they are going to put down instead of PJ1 and some variables like that. At the same time, I feel like I’ve had pretty good success there in the past, so I’m looking forward to it.”

• As the NASCAR Xfinity Series prepares for Saturday’s Explore The Pocono Mountains 225 at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway, Riley Herbst has only one thing on his mind – winning. The driver of the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing has two prior Xfinity Series starts at Pocono, earning a best finish of ninth during his rookie season in 2020. With a strong 2022 campaign that has resulted in five top-five and 12 top-10 finishes in the 18 races run so far, Herbst aims to bolster those numbers in the best way possible – by securing his first career Xfinity Series win.

• Herbst has won at Pocono before. In his first race on the 2.5-mile triangle on June 9, 2017, Herbst scored his first ARCA Menards Series victory. He led a race-high 45 laps to take the win by 1.735 seconds over runner-up Brandon Jones. It was a prelude of more potent Pocono runs. In Herbst’s return to Pocono two months later for the August ARCA race, he finished second. Back-to-back fifth-place finishes were earned in his two Pocono ARCA races in 2018. And in his last ARCA start at Pocono in May 2019, Herbst finished second after leading a race-high 68 laps. Herbst has never finished outside the top-five in an ARCA race at Pocono.

• The Explore The Pocono Mountains 225 will mark Herbst’s 95th career Xfinity Series start and his third at Pocono. In total, he has 14 top-fives and 46 top-10s dating back to his first career start on June 17, 2018, at Iowa Speedway in Newton, where he finished an impressive sixth as a 19-year-old. His best career Xfinity Series result is second, earned twice – Feb. 29, 2020 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, and July 9, 2020 at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta.

• Herbst drives for the team that has won two of the past three Xfinity Series races at Pocono. Stewart-Haas Racing won the 2019 race with Cole Custer and the 2020 race with Chase Briscoe. Both drivers are now competing in the NASCAR Cup Series, with Custer moving up in 2020 and Briscoe moving up in 2021. Custer was the 2020 Cup Series Rookie of the Year and Briscoe secured the 2021 Cup Series Rookie of the Year title. Both have won in Cup too – Custer on July 12, 2020 at Kentucky and Briscoe on March 13, 2022 at Phoenix Raceway.

• Eight races remain before the Xfinity Series Playoffs kick off on Sept. 24 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth. Thanks to his strong runs this season, Herbst is in a good position to make the 12-driver field. He is currently ninth with 493 points, 132 points ahead of Brandon Brown, the first driver below the cutoff line. While a win would clinch a playoff spot for Herbst, the 23-year-old racer can continue to point his way into the playoffs by scoring stage points and earning more top-fives and top-10s through the final regular-season race Sept. 16 at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.

You were en route to another top-10 finish last Saturday at New Hampshire when you got collected in a multi-car accident. Next up is Pocono, a track where you have a history of front-running consistency. When you endure adversity like you did at New Hampshire, how welcoming is it for your next race to be at a track where you have a significant amount of experience?

“We have to leave the bad runs behind us. We got caught up in an unfortunate situation at New Hampshire, but we had a strong run going and probably would’ve earned another top-10 if that hadn’t happened. It’s behind us, though. I know this team can win. We just have to stay out of trouble. The SHR Xfinity program has been strong at Pocono. I’ve also had good runs there in ARCA, so I’m excited to head back and see what we can do.”

Pocono is the site of your first ARCA win. How significant was that victory to your racing career?

“It was a big moment for me. That was my first full-time season in the ARCA Menards Series and to get my first win in just my sixth start, it was big. That whole season jumpstarted my career and helped me get to where I am today in the Xfinity Series. It would be awesome to also get my first Xfinity win at the same track.”

The Xfinity Series Playoffs are just around the corner. Despite last week’s misfortune, you still have a significant buffer over the 12-driver cutoff line. What is your strategy as you head into the final eight races of the regular season?

“The goal is to be consistent and win. We can obviously lock ourselves in with a win, but we need to stay out of trouble and finish the races. Last weekend was a great example of never knowing what’s going to happen around you. Bad luck hit us, but we can always bounce back. Luckily, we have some good tracks coming up and I’m confident that we can compete for wins at some of them. We still have a good points cushion, but we can’t let our guard down.”

● Cole Custer, driver of the No. 41 HaasTooling.com Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR), looks to score a breakthrough NASCAR Cup Series performance during Sunday’s M&M’s Fan Appreciation 400 at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway akin to the success he’s enjoyed there in previous NASCAR’s Xfinity Series and Camping World Truck Series outings, and in the ARCA Menards Series.

● Sunday’s 160-lap, 400-mile race will be Custer’s 96th career Cup Series start and his sixth at Pocono. His best Cup Series results at the 2.5-mile “Tricky Triangle” came during his 2020 Rookie of the Year campaign, when he posted finishes of 16th and 17th, respectively, in the Saturday and Sunday races of the June 2020 weekend doubleheader.

● Custer scored a victory and two pole positions in his three Pocono Xfinity Series starts behind the wheel of the No. 00 SHR Ford from 2017 through 2019. He never started worse than third, never finished worse than seventh, and led a total of 95 laps in the three events. He qualified third and finished seventh in 2017, then qualified on the pole in both the 2018 and 2019 races, finishing fifth in 2018 and scoring the victory by .228 of a second over Tyler Reddick in 2019 after leading a race-high 58 laps.

● Driving the No. 00 JR Motorsports entry in both ARCA Menards Series events in 2015, Custer left the June race after just 18 laps with a broken axle, but then returned with a vengeance in the August race, which he started fifth and won by a 4.991-second margin over Grant Enfinger after leading 18 laps.

● In his lone NASCAR Camping World Truck Series outing at Pocono, Custer drove the No. 00 JR Motorsports entry to a fifth-place finish in the 2016 race.

● Custer will be pulling double duty on the racetrack this weekend as he’ll be behind the wheel of the No. 07 SS Greenlight Racing Ford Mustang for the fourth time this season during Saturday’s Explore the Pocono Mountains 225 Xfinity Series race. In his first race of the season in the No. 07 Ford, the 24-year-old from Ladera Ranch, California, led a race-high 80 laps enroute to his victory from the second starting position Feb. 26 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. He followed that up with a third-place run March 26 at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, before seeing another strong run ended with an accident five laps from the finish of the July 2 race at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

You’ve had some strong outings at Pocono on your way to the Cup Series and are now looking for one of those breakthrough runs this weekend. How would you describe trying to master the racetrack?

“It’s tough. It’s tricky. It’s called the ‘Tricky Triangle’ for obvious reasons. The straightaways are so long, it gives you a lot of time to think about how you’re going to mess up the next corner (laughs). It’s a tough place to get around because all the corners are different. I think everybody loves it because it’s a challenge. With three different, really difficult corners, it’s one of those styles of tracks you haven’t seen a bunch before. It’s a triangle and you don’t ever race at other tracks shaped like that. There’s nothing like it.”

With 20 races in the NextGen car behind you, what are your thoughts about the racing so far this season?

“I think it’s definitely a closer field of cars. I think you can see that you have guys who start off the race not as good as they want to be and then they get it better just because there’s only so far off you can be, I guess. There still are good cars and bad cars, but it’s in a tighter box, so I think it’s made it a little bit more competitive. You see teams that haven’t run up front in the past. I mean, they’re right up there winning, and competing for wins, so it’s made it good, I think. Like I’ve been saying all year, the cars are on edge on the bigger tracks, especially just because you don’t always have the downforce that you would want when you go to places like that, but it makes the drivers work that much harder and makes for some exciting racing.”

You’re well into the dog days of summer. How do drivers deal with the mental and physical aspects of keeping yourselves fresh week in and week out?

“It’s an extremely long season. We have one of the longest seasons in sports. We race a lot of races and the biggest thing is you just have to keep yourself feeling good and you have to keep yourself in a positive mindset. I think if you’re dragging it out every single week and you’re taking the last week a few days into your next week, it starts dragging on and you start not feeling great and you start getting down on yourself. You have to just put the last week in the past, usually, and move on to the next week and keep yourself feeling good.”

You participated in the Goodyear tire test at Pocono earlier this year. How was that, and what can we expect in the NextGen car at Pocono?

“I think we had a really good test there. We felt like we were the best car at the tire test. That doesn’t always translate to success on race weekend because Goodyear could always bring a different tire, so it’s hard to put too much weight into how you did at the test. I did feel good about it and I think we learned a lot. I feel like Pocono is going to be somewhat of a wild-card race. It’s going to be crazy on restarts and the track is so wide. Track position is going to be as important as always, so there will be a lot of risk-taking on that big, long, front straightaway.”

What is going to be the key to success this weekend?

“It’s going to be important to have cars that drive good. These cars have shock limiters, and the amount of shock travel we have, and going through three different corners to try and make this aero platform correct is going to be a challenge. There are just so many variables that make Pocono unique, and it takes somewhat of a compromise, so whoever figures out that compromise best, not only from the drivers but the engineers, as well, is going to win, and I hope we got a head start on that because of that test.”

Pocono has always been a track where you have a lot of pieces that need to come together to find success. Has that improved with the NextGen car, or has that added more to what you have to think about for 400 miles at the “Tricky Triangle?”

“Pocono is definitely one of the most unique racetracks we go to. The three corners are so different that your car’s never going to drive good in one or two of them. You’ve got to get it driving good through the tunnel turn, and you want to try to get it as close as possible to being good in the others. You want to be able to come out of the tunnel turn with the right balance for that long straightaway. Then you throw in shifting and it adds a whole new element. Most drivers already shifted there, but only in one of the corners. Now, we’re going to shift in all of them. On the aero side, it’s going to be one of the more interesting races just because it’s such an unknown with this new car. With only 15 or 20 minutes of practice, you’re realistically probably only going to get four or five laps and then you’ve got to go qualify, and it’s going to be really important to qualify well. This car has been so different everywhere we go and I don’t see that changing until we get back to some of these places a second time.”

The playoff picture has changed a lot the last few weeks with some new winners, repeat winners, and some shifts in points. How do you feel about where you stand with only six races left in the regular season?

“I’m not really sure. It makes me a little nervous, but I can’t worry about it too much. We just need to do a better job each week because it could definitely come down to a points situation. You know a lot of people think it’s the playoff points, but it’s the regular-season points that we’re going to start going off of when guys start to get eliminated if we’ve got more than 16 race winners. So, for us, we just need to try and capitalize on the stages and just maximize our day because we’re racing for those final spots against guys that have won and guys that are running really well. We can hope it’s just repeat winners the next few weeks and that helps, but there are too many tracks left where anything can happen. It would be nice to go get another win and take ourselves out of that position, but it’s just not that easy. You really have to put a whole race together with no mistakes and hit the right setup. It’s definitely nerve-wracking that there are six races left and only two guys without wins in (the playoff field). That’s what makes it exciting, though.”

Flying Lizard Motorsports Returns to Watkins Glen for Double Race Weekend with Aston Martins

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (July 19, 2022) – Just a few weeks after Flying Lizard Motorsports celebrated another Lamborghini Super Trofeo victory at Watkins Glen International, the team is returning to the upstate New York road course with a pair of Aston Martins, ready to compete in SRO America’s GT America powered by AWS and Pirelli GT4 America series. Each series will host a double-header this Saturday and Sunday, giving drivers Elias Sabo and Andy Lee four opportunities to bring the fan-favorite team additional 2022 season successes.

“I can’t wait for this upcoming weekend at Watkins Glen,” said Program Manager Darren Law. “It is honestly one of my favorite tracks in the United States for our team to race at. It is both challenging and rewarding to drive and we have had much success here in the past. We just completed two full days of testing recently and things went really well. We have some great momentum after our second podium of the year last race at VIRginia International Raceway, and we look forward to continuing to build on that success.”

Dubbed The Glen, the 11-turn circuit offers fans and competitors beautiful views of the rolling, forested hills of Upstate New York while delivering unbeatable racing action across the 3.4-mile layout. Fans will be treated to five separate race series competing this weekend, with two days of practice and qualifying before the participants go racing on Saturday, July 23 and Sunday, July 24.

In 2021, the team earned a pair of third-place finishes in GT America at Watkins Glen with driver Andy Wilzoch and will look to build on those results this weekend with Sabo in the No. 8 Aston Martin Vantage GT4. With a pair of top-five finishes in the first two events, Sabo remains hungry for his first podium in the bronze-only series. Consisting strictly of amateur-only racing drivers, the GT America series allows GT2, GT3, and GT4 machinery to race together in a pair of 40-minute races, without any mandatory pit stops. Thirty-seven entries are set to compete in Upstate New York this weekend, featuring machinery from the world’s best automotive manufacturers.

In GT4 America, Sabo is joined by co-driver Andy Lee for the two to share driving duties in the No. 8 Aston Martin Vantage GT4 for a pair of 60-minute races. With six races complete, Sabo and Lee hold a pair of third-place finishes, the most recent being the latest round at VIRginia International Raceway last month. This weekend will mark rounds seven and eight of the championship, reaching the halfway point of the 16-round season.

Thirty-four entries and 68 drivers will participate in the weekend, split between the Silver, Pro-Am, and Am categories. Sabo and Lee will make one of sixteen entries in the Pro-Am class, arguably the most competitive class in the field.

About Flying Lizard Motorsports
Based out of Sonoma, California, Flying Lizard Motorsports is one of the most iconic sports car teams in motorsports, having celebrated ten driver and team championships, as well as competed internationally at the 24 Hours of Le Mans eight times.

The Lizards burst on the American Le Mans Series scene in 2004, competing in the GT class until 2012.
