Brandon Watson on pole and Rookie of the Race

(June 26, 2022) Wight Motorsports Inc (WMI) drivers once again showed top speeds and posted solid finishes during round number four of the 2022 NASCAR Pinty’s Series season. The race at Eastbound International Speedway in Avondale, Newfoundland this past Sunday was the first ever visit for the series to the province.

Stayner, Ontario’s Brandon Watson posted the fastest time during the combined practice and qualifying session to start on pole and was the top finishing rookie in the race with a fourth-place result. Despite tire issues in his #64 machine Mark Dilley muscled the car to another top ten finish. TJ Rinomato had one of his best results in his #2 car finishing in 12th position on the lead lap.

Andrew Ranger had his #27 car out front early, but a mechanical issue in the engine would end his day early. As a result of contact with the outside wall, Glenn Styres to retire his #0 car early.

With his fourth consecutive top-ten race finish Watson sits fourth in the overall championship standings, just 11 points back of the leader.

NEXT EVENT:
Round five of the 2022 season will take place on the streets of Toronto at Exhibition Place and be the feature attraction on Friday July 15th as part of the IndyCar weekend of events.

The 2022 NASCAR Pinty’s Series will consist of 13 total races in five provinces with a mixture of oval tracks, road and street courses.

June 26, 2022, Norwalk, Ohio — Tony Stewart Racing (TSR) Top Fuel pilot Leah Pruett recorded her strongest performance of the season to date aboard her Dodge Power Brokers dragster with a semifinal appearance at the 15th annual National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Summit Racing Equipment Nationals near Norwalk, Ohio, the tenth of 22 Camping World Drag Racing Series events this season.

After four qualifying runs put her 15th on the ladder, Pruett kicked off eliminations by upsetting No. 2 qualifier Justin Ashley with her quickest pass of the weekend. She lined up her Dodge Power Brokers dragster against Steve Torrence in the quarterfinals, was quicker on the launch, and put in another solid run to stay ahead of her competitor at the finish line with a 0.0172-second margin of victory to advance.

Pruett’s opponent for her first semifinal appearance of the season was No. 3 qualifier Mike Salinas who had the slight advantage off the start as she lost traction right at the hit of the throttle. While disappointed by the loss, her performance this weekend put her back into the top-ten in the Top Fuel standings and has her looking forward to getting her 11,000 horsepower Dodge//SRT HEMI®-powered machine back on track in July for the first of three western swing events that begin with the Dodge Power Brokers Mile-High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway.

In Funny Car action, the category points leader heading into the weekend, TSR driver Matt Hagan, qualified his Dodge Power Brokers Charger SRT Hellcat among the top-five positions on the eliminations ladder for a ninth time this season. His lap of 3.917 seconds at 329.91 mph put him fifth on the qualifying timesheet and set up a first round match-up with No. 12 seed Tim Wilkerson. 

Looking to repeat his 2018 winning performance at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park, Hagan staged his HEMI-powered Funny Car next to No. 12 seed Tim Wilkerson for the opening round and made a solid pass to advance while his opponent lost traction at the start.

The Dodge Power Broker Funny Car moved on to the quarterfinals where Hagan faced off against No. 4 qualifier Bob Tasca III, but saw his ride lose traction early in the run which brought the day to an earlier end than has been the case after advancing to the final round six times in ten events this season to date. The quarterfinal result, combined with Hagan’s closest championship rival Robert Hight’s eventual event win at Norwalk, meant a drop to second place in the standings but just 21 points behind the new points leader.

Winner of last year’s Funny Car Wally trophy at Norwalk, Cruz Pedregon was looking to defend that performance as he qualified in the top-half of the Funny Car eliminations ladder for a tenth consecutive event this season by taking his Snap-on® Tools Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat for a 3.960 seconds lap to put him in the eighth spot. Pedregon also earned an extra bonus point in qualifying for recording the third quickest elapsed time lap in the first session of the weekend.

In his opening elimination round pairing with No. 9 seed Chad Green, Pedregon hit the throttle first and never looked back with a 3.972-second lap that wasn’t far off his qualifying time. That set up a quarterfinal battle against No. 1 qualifier Ron Capps in which Pedregon’s 3.982 sec./323.50 mph run wasn’t quite enough to beat his opponents 3.974/327.59 winning effort. The team’s eighth quarterfinal performance of the season keeps Pedregon fifth in the Funny Car standings.

The NHRA returns to action July 15-18 near Denver, Colorado, where Dodge//SRT and Mopar will mark their 33rd season as title sponsors of the Dodge Power Brokers Mile-High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway, the longest continuous event sponsorship in motorsports history.

“Advancing to the semifinal was a long time coming and it didn’t come easy. Even though we were consistent in qualifying with our 0.86’s, we kept trying to go faster and the car was going slower. This entire year, the car has been very conversational and very reactive to what we ask it to do. This whole weekend, it was not cooperating. We were trying to throw more at it and it kept slowing down. It hung on there through the first two rounds. I’m very proud of all of my guys bolting this Dodge HEMI together. They are quality men with quality parts and great decision making skills. I’m proud of myself for being up on the wheel.

We are highlighting how we got to this point and we will also be highlighting why we smoked the tires in the semifinal. Once we get out to Denver, we’ll be doing the Dodge Drive Event on Wednesday and Thursday, so we’ll have a long and productive weekend to start the western swing. 

We’ll be changing up our entire combination and use the one we had last year when we won at Bandimere. We will take what we learned here and tuck it away until we get to another hot race track with similar conditions and we can apply the knowledge we learned this weekend in the Dodge Power Brokers Funny Car. All in all, it’s tough when you’ve been on such a roll to go out in the second round a couple of times in a row, but that is drag racing. We will keep digging and growing and building our data to move forward.”

Incredible Day Ends in Victory Lane at Watkins Glen International for No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05

Watkins Glen, N.Y. (June 26, 2022) — With bent steering and running on minimal fuel, the No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 team clutched onto a late lead to take victory in a dramatic, thunderstorm-delayed Six Hour enduro at Watkins Glen International (WGI) this afternoon. The win, secured by a flying final stint by Portuguese ace Filipe Albuquerque, and a blistering middle stint by co-driver Ricky Taylor, was the team’s first WGI victory since 2011. The triumph catapults them into the 2022 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship lead with a 17-point gap over Meyer Shank Racing.

Teammates Taylor and Albuquerque drove extremely strong stints throughout the entire Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen to keep the No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 in first or second position throughout the race.

Filipe Albuquerque started the six-hour endurance race from second position and took the lead on the run down to the Bus Stop on the first lap, taking control of the race and managing to stay clean throughout a caution filled stint. As leaders, they were forced with a difficult strategy decision after several early cautions. They elected to stay out when the entire DPi field pit during the third stoppage, putting them off-strategy compared to the rest of their competitors.

The No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 continued to run up front when Ricky Taylor took over the blue and black machine with three hours and thirty minutes to go. Taylor ran extremely fast stint during the race’s longest period of green racing, before Filipe entered the cockpit for the final stage of the race. The No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05’s biggest competitor was its sister car, the No. 60 Acura, who was able to overtake before an extended red flag due to inclement weather.

The red flag nullified the need for an extra pit stop, and the final restart brought about a true sprint to the finish with 19 minutes to go at the green. Albuquerque quickly took over the lead again with a move that mirrored the opening lap of the race, but this time he was even more aggressive, squeezing the No. 60 to the inside on the entry to the Bus Stop. Albuquerque picked up damage, grazing the wall while trying to pass GTD traffic, but was undeterred. The battle continued with the sister Acura until the final corners of the race, and Filipe held on beautifully.

The No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05’s run of winning form continues with today’s win, as they’ve now finished on the top step for three of the last four events.

“It was a race we haven’t won in over a decade, we were really competitive with the other Acura,” said Wayne Taylor. “We were surprised at the speed of the Cadillacs. As usual, the team did an incredible job. The drivers are incredible. The tiniest little detail is what makes teams win and that’s what this team is about—detail to every little aspect. When a driver puts his helmet on, he makes his own decisions, but you also have to tell him that we have a championship at stake and honestly the No. 60 car had the race won if it hadn’t been for the red flag. They had a full tank of gas, and we had a half tank, and we didn’t know that they were going to stop the clock. That meant that we were going to have to drive while saving fuel. Filipe did an awesome job, both at the start and at the end. Both Ricky and Filipe together are unbelievable teammates. The way they work together, there’s not ego between the two of them. Ricky was putting in amazing laps and made the recovery when we had a different strategy. The rain and red flag were kind of chaotic, but it played in our favor. We only had one shot to go to the lead which we managed to do that and save fuel and then somehow, we won. Don’t ask me how… and that’s magical.”

The 2022 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season continues next weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in Bowmanville, Ontario for one of the final sprint races of the year. Practice 1 begins on Friday, July 1st at 2:40 p.m. ET. Green flag for the two hour and 40-minute sprint race will wave at 3:05 p.m. ET. RISI COMPETIZIONE ANNOUNCES ENTRY AND DRIVER LINE-UP FOR THE SAHLEN’S SIX HOURS AT THE GLEN

Watkins Glen, NY, (June 26, 2022)—After qualifying P3 in the GT Daytona Pro class for Sahlen’s Six Hours at the Glen, the Risi Competizione Ferrari GT3 EVO claimed their second podium finish of the 2022 IMSA WeatherTech Endurance Championship season with a P2 finish at Watkins Glen International circuit in upstate New York.

In a race that featured 13 GTD Pro class lead changes, seven yellow flags and an unfortunate, ill-timed red flag, the Risi Ferrari ran an exciting race which saw them running strongly in first place before the red flag was displayed and brought the race to a halt.

Frequent Risi driver Davide Rigon (ITA) began the race behind the wheel of the No. 62 Prancing Horse where after running much of the first half in the P4/P5 position he was able to speed near the front of the seven-car class field to P3 before handing over the reins to teammate Daniel Serra (BRA) on Lap 73.

Serra quickly began working his way further to the front of the pack by improving upon Rigon’s best lap time (1:47.684) and continuing to break his own best lap time four more times throughout his stint. On Lap 118, with just under two hours remaining of the six-hour race, Serra took the lead from the BMW M4 piloted by John Edwards. With a storm in the distance and air and track temperatures falling, Serra remained aggressive, eventually widening the lead to nearly 20-seconds ahead of his nearest competitor.

However, nearby lightning drew the mandatory red flag with an hour and 22 minutes left on the clock, thereby erasing Serra’s sizable lead. When the green flag dropped an hour later, and with 35 minutes left in the race, Serra came out aggressively, turning his fastest lap (1:46.947) on Lap 140. A necessary splash-and-go on Lap 144 with just 4-minutes 29-seconds left, dropped him from the lead and with little time left the team was unable to reclaim the top spot.

It was Risi Competizione’s first appearance at the 3.4 mile, 11-turn road course of Watkins Glen since 2016 and their fifth appearance overall. Their visit in 2002 resulted in a one-two finish for their two-car team in the SRPII class in a pair of Lola B2K/40s.

The duo of Rigon and Serra, along with teammates James Calado and Alessandro Pier Guidi, captured second place at the Rolex 24 At Daytona earlier this year and the duo finished ninth at Sebring, along with third Risi driver, Eddie Cheever III.

“It was a good race. We finished quite well in the end. I don’t understand why they stopped the clock and gave a red flag but it’s something we cannot control. I’m very happy with the team. They did a super job with strategy, all the equipment, and the car was flying today. Except for missing the power on the straight, especially at sector one, we lost up the essess to the bus stop as others had better straight-line speed. On the start I was in traffic, and it was very difficult to recover. We were very fast in the corners, but not on the straight. Otherwise, I’m very happy and there was not one mistake. Thanks to the team and Daniel did a super job and now looking forward to the next one.”

Daniel Serra, driver No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GT3 EVO:
“We finished P2. I think we were a bit unlucky with the red flag. Unfortunately, they stopped the clock during the red flag, and we then had to do one more stop and some of the other competitors didn’t. Anyway, I think the team did a great job. They executed everything perfect, and the car was good. It was tough to race because we did not have the straight-line speed to fight or overtake the others. We were quick in the corners but were probably the slowest on the straight-line speed. The team did well, and Davide did a really good job and now I think we need to start thinking about the next one.”

“It was a challenging weekend with a very condensed schedule, very little down time for the crew. We rolled off with a good car and improved it through the two sessions. We didn’t have the fastest car this weekend, but luck went our way and the drivers did an exceptional job and the pit stops were flawless. We just ended up about three laps short on fuel after the red flag restart. It seems we are serial bridesmaids.”

NORWALK, Ohio (June 26, 2022) — Chevrolet drivers Robert Hight and Erica Enders helped their championship aspirations with victories in the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals.

Hight, driving the the AAA of Ohio Chevrolet Camaro SS, takes over the Funny Car points lead with his fourth victory of the season, while Enders extends her Pro Stock lead to 105 points with her series-leading fifth win of the year.

“I think its awesome and I am so proud of this team,” said Hight after the win. “They have worked so hard. It shows we are legit here and here to win. But, you know what, we have two weeks to get ready for Denver and go out there and try to sweep the swing. And that is exactly what this Auto Club team is going to try to do.”

Hight defeated Bob Tasca in the finals while his teammate John Force fell in the second round after dropping a cylinder. Force, the No. 2 qualifier in the PEAK/BlueDEF Platinum Camaro SS, extended his NHRA record with his 4,000th career elimination round win.

In Pro Stock, Enders met Elite Motorsports teammate Aaron Stanfield in the finals for the fourth time this season. She has won three of those meetings. “I go back to the old days and remember how long this journey has been,” said Enders, driver of the Melling Performance/Elite Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro SS. “This is my 18th year in Pro Stock. I’m sure some of the viewers are sick of seeing this Melling Performance Chevy Camaro in the winner’s circle, but we went seven years winless.”

In Top Fuel, Brittany Force made it to the semis in the Monster Energy/Flav-R-Pac Chevrolet dragster before falling to Josh Hart in a tight drag race and surrenders the point lead. John Force Racing teammate Austin Prock fell in the second round after losing a cylinders.

The Constant Aviation Factory Stock Showdown final was a classic face-off between David Barton in his Chevrolet COPO Camaro and Bill Skillman. Barton came up a blink short at the final and heads into the next round second in the standings. The battle for the Factory Stock Showdown world championship will continue Labor Day weekend at the U.S. Nationals.

Chevrolet teams will prepare for the annual Western Swing – three consecutive weekends of racing – starting July 15-17 at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colorado. Brittany Force was the No. 1 qualifier in Top Fuel in the 2021 event. Pro Stock did not compete at Bandimere Speedway last year. FOX will telecast eliminations at 4 p.m. ET July 17.

Outstanding effort from the team puts the Ligier back on track quickly at Watkins Glen

WATKINS GLEN, NY. (26 June, 2022) – Sean Creech Motorsport (SCM) quickly recovered from an early incident to return to the track and earn valuable LMP3 championship points in Sunday’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen at Watkins Glen International – race three of both the Michelin Endurance Cup and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Drivers João Barbosa, Lance Willsey and Malthe Jakobsen showed the No. 33 SCM Exelixis/Focal One/Alta Equipment Ligier JS P320’s pace throughout the weekend, but contact early in the race sent the team to the garage for repairs. Outstanding work from the Sebring 12 Hour-winning team saw the Ligier return to the track and finish sixth, gaining valuable positions and points despite a weather-related red flag that halted their progress.

The team came into the weekend third in LMP3 points. As the winners of the previous Michelin Endurance Challenge event, the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, the team had high hopes for the six-hour endurance classic.

The No. 33 Ligier was immediately quick, setting the fastest LMP3 lap time of the weekend, with a lap of 1:39.669 in Saturday morning’s second practice. Starting the race from the fifth row of the enlarged LMP3 class, Willsey took the green flag and commenced the LMP3 class battle from the outset. Running competitive lap times and focusing forward, Willsey found himself in the middle of a four-car train just before the one-hour mark, with the lead car allowing the leaders to gain ground. Willsey saw the No. 36 ahead go wide and made a move on the inside to pass, but the 36 held his line and Willsey’s momentum carried him into his competitor’s right rear wheel. Willsey spun and though he was relatively undamaged, the car would not restart.

The team worked feverishly on the Ligier back in the garage, analyzing every inch of the car’s electrical system to discover an overheated starter, and within an hour had the car back on track with Barbosa behind the wheel. The two-time Sahlen’s Six Hour winner steadied the ship, putting down solid laps before handing to Jakobsen with just over three hours remaining. Jakobsen put in an impressive stint, setting the team’s quick time of the race, a lap of 1:41.463 on lap 89 of an eventual 132. The young Dane handed over to Barbosa at the two-hour mark.

But with just under 90 minutes remaining, Mother Nature intervened. Lightning in the area brought out a red flag, with teams battening down their pit lane setups as heavy winds and rain rolled through the area. The race once again took the green flag with just 21 minutes remaining, but it was enough for Barbosa to gain enough laps to secure sixth position – and the valuable points. The team now lies in fourth position in the LMP3 team standings.

The most frustrating part was that the team gave us a really, really good car. That’s why I was so impatient at the end of that four-car train, the leaders were getting away from us. I thought I had space behind the 36 car, who I thought was having brake issues, and I don’t think he saw me. It was just enough contact to spin me and overheat the starter. All hands on deck in the garage – it was a heroic effort by the team to get us back out there to move up the leaderboard.”

The team was able to resolve the problem quickly but unfortunately, the incident took us out of contention. The team kept digging: every point is important – we’re further down the standings than we’d like but who knows if these points will make the difference. It’s a shame, the car was so good all weekend and the team did a great job. The track was fine after the red, the car felt great, but I didn’t want to get in the middle of cars fighting for position, especially with such a short turnaround – we’ll dig into exactly what happened with the starter but the car is in one piece and we’re looking forward to our return to Canada. We have a good baseline setup that should work well at CTMP.”

“It was fun but it was hard once we had the incident. The team did a really good job to get us back out. It wasn’t too many laps this time, because of the red flag, but that’s how it is sometimes!”

“The team did a great job. It’s unfortunate that we had the incident, and the resulting starter issue. It appears to be a weak link in the Ligier, some teams in ELMS (European Le Mans) have had this same issue. The team diagnosed it quickly and got us back out to salvage more points. This class is so competitive, you have to get every point you can. That’s why you work so hard get back on track – you never know what’s going to happen.”

The two hour and 40-minute Chevrolet Grand Prix takes the green flag Sunday at 3:05 p.m. The race will be broadcast live in the U.S., in its entirety on network NBC and Peacock TV in the US, and on REV TV in Canada. JACKSON JUST SHY OF TOP TEN AT EASTBOUND

(June 27, 2022) Larry Jackson and the #84 Dodge racing team had an action-packed weekend in round four of the 2022 NASCAR Pinty’s Series at Eastbound International Speedway located in Avondale, Newfoundland. Jackson wheeled the Dooley’s Trucking and O’Neil Electric Supply Dodge to an 11th place finish.

The highly anticipated Pro-Line 225 presented by QwickWick lived up to all expectations and was an amazing weekend for race fans on the east coast! Saturday’s green flag was postponed to Sunday due to rain showers, but that did not dampen the atmosphere.

Jackson and team stated that the car felt good from the beginning of practice, and they made some changes to improve performance. The #84 Dodge team thought they may have qualified better but knew that the Dooley’s Trucking/O’Neil Electric Supply machine would race well. Jackson made some gains in the first half of the race and closed in on the top ten just in time for the scheduled stop halfway through. After some further handling adjustments, fuel, and tires, Jackson continued to run in the top 10 through the late stages but ultimately finished just outside in 11th.

Overall, it was an excellent weekend with the NASCAR Pinty’s Series with warm temps and sunshine on race day, an enthusiastic crowd, and lots of action. Jackson’s east coast debut is for sure one to remember!

CATHCART WITH A CAREER BEST IN NEWFOUNDLAND

(June 26, 2022) Bryan Cathcart and the #71 Cathcart Racing team are ecstatic following the Pro-Line 225 presented by QwickWick at Eastbound International Speedway located in Avondale, Newfoundland. Cathcart drove hard and wheeled the #71 Dodge into a 12th place finish, this being a career best!

Round 4 being one of the NASCAR Pinty’s Series most highly anticipated races did not go by without plenty of action on and off track! Saturday’s race start was postponed to Sunday due to rain showers, bringing an even more eager crowd to the speedway the next morning.

Cathcart and team stuck with their normal plan of staying consistent and getting to the end of the race. The #71 Cathcart Racing driver started in 19th and began to move forward in the first half with motivation from his team. The crew made some adjustments to improve during the scheduled pit stop and Bryan maintained consistent pace throughout getting him back on the lead lap. This earned him the free pass in a late caution during the second half of the race. Cathcart continued to push right to the end, claiming a 12th place finish.

The east coast sure brought out the best in Bryan Cathcart and the #71 team and they are ready to keep the excitement and momentum going at the Toronto Indy in a few weeks. Cathcart’s east coast run is one for the books!

Chase Elliott scores his second Cup Series win of the season at Nashville

Chase Elliott persevered through two extended race delays due to rain and lightning at Nashville Superspeedway to cruise into Victory Lane and win the Ally 400.

It was his second NASCAR Cup Series win this year and the 15th of his career, but it did not come easily.

Elliott finished eighth in Stage 1 and was scored fourth at the end of the second stage after overcoming a lengthy pit stop that left him mired in 25th place. His car continued to improve as Elliott drove his No. 9, Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, to the front, taking the lead with 38 laps remaining.

The race, however, came down to a strategic call to stay out on the track during the last caution of the night while many of his competitors elected to pit.

Toyota drivers Denny Hamlin (114), Martin Truex Jr. (82) and Kyle Busch (54) had proven to be the most dominant cars of the night, leading a combined 250 laps, but all three decided to pit on the final caution.

And, when the checkered flag flew, the decision not to pit paid off as Elliott held off Kurt Bush for the final four laps to claim the unique Gibson guitar trophy.

“I’m so proud of our team,” Elliott said. “We had a setback about halfway, but we were able to get the NAPA Chevy dialed back in and get back in the mix. It was a long day, a fun day. I’m so proud of our team. We’ve had a pretty rough month, month and a half. It’s just nice to get back going in the right direction.

“Getting a win is always huge. To do it in a really cool city like Nashville is even better. I’m looking forward to that guitar (trophy).”

Kurt Busch regretted not being more aggressive and felt as though he let his team down.   

“I wanted to throw some fenders, but I didn’t get the job done,” he said. “Everybody will be smiling, but I let them down. I should have come up with a better plan.

“We were going to stay out no matter what, and I needed to start throwing fenders to move people around. I didn’t get after it, and I made too many mistakes and didn’t stick with our strength. I’m not going to say what our strength was, but we did a lot of things good.

“We didn’t have one exceptional item. We’re second with our Toyota Camry. I want to do it over, but you don’t get those at this elite level and Chase got the job done.”

Ryan Blaney finished third followed by Kyle Larson, Ross Chastain, Denny Hamlin, Austin Cindric, Christopher Bell, Joey Logano and Kevin Harvick, rounding out the top 10.
