Ford Performance NASCAR: Fresh Off Truck Series Win, Gilliland Hopes to Keep Momentum Going in Nashville

Ford Performance Notes and Quotes
NASCAR Cup Series
Nashville Advance | Wednesday, June 22, 2022

Todd Gilliland, driver of the No. 38 Boot Barn Ford Mustang in the NASCAR Cup Series for Front Row Motorsports, is coming off a win last weekend in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series when he took the checkered flag at Knoxville Raceway. He spoke about that victory in addition to looking ahead to this weekend’s race at Nashville Superspeedway.

TODD GILLILAND, No. 38 Boot Barn Ford Mustang – WHAT CAN A WIN LIKE LAST WEEKEND DO FOR A DRIVER’S CONFIDENCE AND IS THERE ANY CARRYOVER YOU CAN TAKE INTO NASHVILLE? “I’ve been thinking about that a lot. I think the win will give me a lot more confidence. It seems like Sonoma was so long ago and then I think just that is a good break to kind of reset, but then the Truck Series win on top of it I feel like I’m gonna go back into Nashville probably the most confident and probably the most ready I’ve been this year to kind of just attack the racetrack. The Cup Series will do a really good job of taking confidence away from you, so anything you do to get confidence back is definitely a good thing.”

HOW HAS THIS FIRST SEASON BEEN SO FAR IN THE CUP SERIES? “I feel like it’s been up and down. There are a lot of things that I’ve been proud of that we’ve done. I feel like we started out the year probably a little bit better than I expected, and then things got pretty tough. We had a few issues with the cars that were kind of self-induced issues. I’ve put ourselves in some bad situations. I wrecked my first lap at Dover in practice and definitely have made my share of rookie mistakes. That’s all very frustrating because I kind of expect to not make those mistakes, but I guess once it happens there’s really nothing you can do except learn from it. I definitely was excited to have an off weekend, but everyone kind of just get back in the groove of things now. It’s a grueling schedule. That’s one thing I’ve learned for sure, and that goes for the whole team, so hopefully we hit the ground running here and have a little bit more speed.”

HAD YOUR DAD PREPARED YOU FOR HOW TOUGH THE SEASON IS WITH ONLY ONE WEEK OFF? “Yeah, I think it’s one of the things that I knew it was gonna be hard, but it’s been the hardest thing. Even like Daytona for the whole week I was like, ‘Man, this is so busy.’ And then we go straight into the west coast swing and you’re like, ‘Oh my God. Am I ever gonna catch up on sleep or get ahead on anything?’ After that, it’s been nice to be racing kind of closer to home where we get home at a decent hour, but it really makes a huge difference from the Truck Series, where you get a day or two to recover before going back at it for the next week, where this it’s right back into it. I’ve been learning a lot and I feel like honestly it’s something that you can talk about but you’re not really prepared for it until you do it.”

YOU RAN THE TRUCKS AT NASHVILLE LAST YEAR. WHAT DID YOU LEARN ABOUT THE TRACK? “I had a lot of fun at Nashville last year. I think we were fastest in practice. We had a tech issue, so we didn’t get to qualify, but I finished second in the race. It seemed like we were pretty fast last year right off the bat, so I’m excited for it. I think the resin on the racetrack made it really fun. Watching stuff in the past it seemed like it was really on the bottom, just one lane, so I think NASCAR did a really good job with the racetrack. Honestly, I’m super excited to go back.”

IS THERE ANY BENEFIT TRYING TO BREAK INTO THE CUP SERIES THIS YEAR AS A ROOKIE COMPARED TO OTHER SEASONS? “I feel like I almost have the same feelings on this as I was at the beginning of the year. There are positives and negatives to it, for sure. When we go to the racetrack the Kevin Harvicks and Martin Truex’s are taking a lap or two or maybe even a whole run to get up to speed, which I would be doing as a rookie with the old car, but they would just be multiple steps ahead of me by starting off so much faster. Last year, they had so much data to feel confident that the team would start pretty close on setup that you could trust the car, whereas this we’re all learning together at all of these racetracks. I feel like that makes me a little bit more nervous to go out there and, honestly, a little bit unprepared at times just because there’s nothing to watch. There’s nothing to prepare yourself at all, but, I don’t know. I think there are positives and negatives, but, overall, I think it’s been a good thing because I’m learning the car at the same rate as my whole team.”

HOW DOES THIS CUP CAR COMPARE TO WHAT YOU’VE DRIVEN IN THE PAST? “I think the Cup car is actually a lot of fun. I feel like you can race a little bit closer than the trucks. That’s really the only thing I have to compare to on a mile-and-a-half, and I feel like you can race closely. I think one thing that’s really overlooked is that you can race side-by-side really good. In every other car we’ve seen that it’s such a side force dependent car that when you get side-by-side you often see trucks get sucked around when the air gets taken off their right side, where this car it’s not even affected side-by-side. I think that’s a super good thing. We’re still seeing some issues in traffic following people nose-to-tail, but I feel like that’s gonna be a race car no matter what at the speeds we’re going, but, overall, I’ve had so much fun. The shifting is a lot of fun. The digital dash. Overall, in the Cup Series there’s so much more information being fed to me as a driver. I think the Next Gen car has been a lot of fun.”

HOW PREPARED ARE YOU FOR THIS FINAL STRETCH WITH NO WEEKENDS OFF? “I’m excited. I feel like I’ve been working hard to be ready for the summer months, so I’m excited for it. I think the cars are gonna be more fun when they’re sliding around a little bit. We’ve seen hotter weather. It definitely makes you slide around at least feel a little more out of the racetrack, so excited for that. The Cup Series schedule is a lot, so it’s crazy to think our next weekend off will be after Phoenix, but I’m excited for it and just trying to make good progress. I think that’s one really good thing, too. You don’t have any off weeks to maybe celebrate the good times, but if you have a bad week you know you’re going right back at it the next week, so it’s just a lot more about keeping the momentum going – good or bad.”

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE IN THE PRESSURE RACING FOR YOUR DAD LIKE LAST WEEK IN A ONE-OFF SITUATION VERSUS SOMEONE LIKE KYLE BUSCH? “I think that’s almost a double-edge sword of a question. It’s like as a Cup Series guy, I don’t know that I can really claim that yet, but when you go to a Truck race people expect you to do good, so I feel like that’s almost a little bit more added pressure, but then on the flip side it’s like you’re not racing for points. When I walked into Knoxville I was just ready to have a lot of fun. I love dirt racing and just going back to the Truck Series you don’t have to worry about points and all that, so there is still pressure, especially racing for my dad. This is a place I want to do so good at and I admire all of his hard work here, so I want to be a part of it. I think there’s a little bit of pressure there, but also it’s probably a little bit less pressure just going for a non-points race.”

ANY OTHER TRUCK SERIES PLANS FOR THIS YEAR? “Knoxville is the last Truck race I could have ran with the rest of the Triple Truck Challenge races and then the playoffs start right away, so no more for this year but I’m definitely working on them for next year with him or Front Row. I’m trying to get some Truck races anywhere I can.”

WHICH TRACKS ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST IN CUP AND ARE THERE ANY XFINITY RACES POSSIBLE IN THE FUTURE? “I feel like I stand on the Xfinity Series the same as racing in the Trucks. I would love to. I just feel like on all of these situations it’s just really when the opportunities come up. That’s really why I’ve never run in the Xfinity Series before is that I’ve never had an opportunity to, so I’d love to. I’d love to race as much as possible, so I would definitely like to do that. As far as races coming up, I’m excited to go back to Atlanta. I feel like that will put on a good race. I always love watching the regular season end at Daytona. I feel like that’s always super exciting and I think it will be really exciting this year too with the amount of winners we’ve seen already. A lot of people will be on the edge of their seats watching that one, I’m sure. Going to some new road courses. I’m excited for Watkins Glen. I think this car will be really fast there, so I think we’ve got a lot of good races coming up.”

HOW MUCH IS THE WIN AT KNOXVILLE A BOOST FOR YOU? “It’s super good. It’s really a shot in the arm to keep me going and kind of get you back up on your feet because we did kind of talk about how the Cup Series will knock you down quick. To get a win is huge. Really, it’s kind of almost like a different mindset. You go in there and I was kind of excited and before we even got there I kind of expected to have a chance to win, but it’s kind of crazy to think that I’ve only won two Truck races, so I feel like it’s just kind of a different mindset going back, but it’s definitely a really good thing. I think I can see why a lot of guys try and run more races in different series.”

WHAT ARE YOU LEARNING ABOUT YOURSELF OR YOUR MENTAL TOUGHNESS BEING IN THE CUP SERIES? “I think there’s definitely a lot of mental toughness, and I think it’s also a lot about the people you surround yourself with. I’ve always felt like even going through the Truck season it’s your team versus everyone else. When you walk into the racetrack those are your friends and I feel like that’s just so much more exaggerated on the Cup Series side just because you’re with these guys so much and that really is just your group of guys versus everyone else. It’s all about pushing each other to do the best you can – in the shop, showing up at the racetrack with the best product possible, and then whether it goes bad it’s about getting everyone back on their feet, or when it’s good to celebrate the small victories. But I think it’s definitely about being mentally tough and keeping those around you mentally tough also.”

WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF THOSE SMALL VICTORIES THIS YEAR? “I don’t know. I guess at Darlington we finished 15th, I think, so that’s my best finish so far. At the beginning of the season it seemed like we were slowly getting a little bit better – a few spots every week. You could just really feel the progress and then once it stalls out it’s really hard to look for any small victory at all. But, I think recently we’ve been unloading faster with more speed. Even for a while there we were really far off when we would unload. Even though we haven’t really gained a ton of spots, we’ve gained quite a bit of time based on where we were at the beginning of the year, so I think it’s more about comparing ourselves to what we can do, but also my teammate Michael McDowell has been running super good, so I think that’s a really good benchmark for us and also kind of a good guy to chase.”

WOULD YOU LIKE TO RUN MORE DURING THE WEEK IN OTHER STUFF OR JUST FOCUS ON CUP AS A ROOKIE? “I like all of motorsports. I wake up on Sunday morning and watch F1, IndyCar, I watch everything and I would love to do all kinds of different racing. That’s something I always joke with – after the win I was talking to Ricky Stenhouse and I was like, ‘Does this get me a ride in your sprint car team or anything like that?’ I’m always working on stuff. I was telling Harrison Burton that he needs to talk to Roger about running the Indy 500, so I’m pushing all of my friends to do different stuff too. I would love to try different things and, overall, I’m just a huge motorsports fan and definitely admire all types of racing.”

YOU GET A 50-MINUTE PRACTICE THIS WEEK, WHICH IS THE LAST TIME UNTIL PHOENIX. WHAT IS THE VALUE OF THAT SESSION? “I think really the biggest difference is maybe not the time per se that you get, but the opportunity to be able to change stuff after practice. I think that’s kind of overlooked in the 20-minute format. Twenty minutes is enough time to give yourself a good direction of which way you need to go, but you really can’t change anything of a substantial amount to probably make a big difference, so that’s what I’m most excited about. That’s my favorite part about how racing used to be is going at practice super hard, making as many changes as you can, and then afterwards kind of thinking about it, especially in the Cup Series with your engineers. There’s so much more support around the team that you can really make an educated guess overnight to start the next day a lot better, so I think that’s what I’m most excited about. I think we’ve made a lot of progress when we’ve had that opportunity, so just to be able to sit down and make a really good guess at Saturday and then hopefully something that will race good on Sunday.”

THE FORECAST IS HOT THIS WEEKEND. WILL YOU WEAR A COOL SUIT OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT? “I’m a wimp. I’ve been wearing it everywhere since the beginning of the year and I’ve got a cool box. I’ve been nice and cool. I haven’t been really too hot. I feel like Gateway was pretty warm and I’m sure this weekend will be super hot, so I don’t know. We’ll see how it goes. It’s 400 miles, I believe 399, so it’s a long one. I think we might see guys definitely look warm when they get out of their car, so we’ll see. Hopefully, I’m not one of them.”

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNGER DRIVERS ENTERING THE SPORT? “That’s a tough question. I just think you need to really learn from every situation possible. I always think back to when I was racing at KBM. At the time, I was frustrated, but there’s always so much to be learned. No matter where you are there are always people that are gonna teach you something new, so I would say even in the lows there’s always something you can learn. Like I said earlier, just keep stacking the little wins up and I think that’s the biggest thing. Keep moving forward good or bad because there’s always another race.”

WHAT DO YOU SEE THAT MICHAEL’S TEAM IS DOING BECAUSE THEY MAY NOT BE IN THE TOP 10 EARLY IN THE RACE, BUT THEY’VE FINISHED THERE IN FIVE OF THE LAST EIGHT RACES? “That’s a hard question. I don’t really know that there’s one thing that’s really changing in the middle or later stages. I think Michael does a super good job of knowing and being really prepared of where the track is gonna go, what adjustments, and I would say he’s a super analytical guy. I’m sure he knows his car in and out and could probably set it up by himself. I think him and his crew chief are hitting their stride for sure. Blake coming in at the beginning of the year was brand new, so I’m sure he’s getting his feet under him, and also a lot happens in these Cup races. I feel like we’ve seen a lot more attrition over the races this year with the Next Gen car. A lot more guys have wrecked and spun out and had issues, but it really takes a great team to run in the top 10. Like I said, we’re trying to dig into all that stuff and definitely learn the most we can from them.”

Extreme E teams go head-to-head at Goodwood Festival of Speed

22 June 2022, London: Extreme E is delighted to announce it will return to Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend, where two of its teams will take to the infamous Hill and battle it out on track for a unique event.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed is renowned as the world’s greatest celebration of motorsport and car culture, featuring some of the most famous names and vehicles of historic motorsport. Extreme E already has strong ties to the Festival of Speed, having unveiled its pioneering ODYSSEY 21 for its first public outing in 2019.

The sport for purpose championship will now be returning to the Festival of Speed with two teams, Veloce Racing and Genesys Andretti United Extreme E, battling it out in a head-to-head shootout. A battle against genders, this shootout has been uniquely designed for the female drivers to compete against their male counterparts.

Taking the wheel of Genesys Andretti United’s ODYSSEY 21 will be both of their current Extreme E drivers Catie Munnings and Timmy Hansen.

Timmy Hansen, Genesys Andretti United driver, said: “We can’t wait to drive up the hill, it has such a legendary status. It’s going to be a lot of fun driving up the hill. It’s fantastic that we can showcase our electric car at such an iconic event, sharing the road with so many other iconic cars.”

Meanwhile, no stranger to Goodwood, Munnings has previously presented for the various automotive events. Catie Munnings, Genesys Andretti United driver, comments: I’m so excited to be back at Goodwood this year. It’s my first time in a while that I’ll be heading there and focusing purely on the driving side, rather than presenting at the event. We can’t wait to show off the car to all the fans and have some fun doing it.

While they retain their drivers for the shootout, Veloce Racing have selected two guest drivers from their driver pool to pilot their car for this exciting event.

Two-time W Series champion and Extreme E Season 1’s Veloce Racing driver, Jamie Chadwick, will be back behind the wheel at the Festival of Speed this weekend. Jamie Chadwick, Veloce Racing driver, said: “It will be great to get back in the Veloce Racing Extreme E car again and to be with everyone from the Veloce family. I was able to drive the car at a recent sponsorship event, which was great, but to take the car up the prestigious Goodwood Hillclimb will be a huge honour. The Festival of Speed is always such a fantastic event and I’m really looking forward to seeing the fans, as well as some familiar faces there.”

Joining Chadwick, will be Max Fewtrell for his first experience of the ODYSSEY 21. Fewtrell, a British racing driver previously competing in Formula 3 and former champion of British Formula 4 and Formula Renault Eurocup, took to Twitch to stream and play games with friends during the pandemic and immediately grew a mass following. In June 2021, Fewtrell joined gaming and lifestyle brand Quadrant, set up by Formula One star Lando Norris, becoming one of the team’s core content players. New to Extreme E, Fewtrell will step into the car for the first time – an exciting affair for both Extreme E fans and gamers alike.

Max Fewtrell, Veloce Racing driver & Quadrant Content Creator, said: “I am delighted and privileged to be given the opportunity to take the Veloce Racing XE car up the famous Goodwood Hill. It’s been two years out of a racing car for me, and I’m itching to get back on a track and feel that buzz again. It’s going to be a mega event and we look forward to welcoming many of the Veloce and Quadrant fans over the course of the four days.”

Veloce Esports and Quadrant will also be present at the Festival of Speed as the hugely successful and experienced esports specialists take centre stage on the Veloce stand.

Drivers will receive two Hillclimb runs each day with practices each morning. The head-to-head time-trial shootout at the Festival of Speed will see Munnings face off against Fewtrell on Saturday’s Qualifying (4:10pm BST on 25 June), with Hansen up against Chadwick on the Sunday Shootout (3:30pm BST on 26 June).

James Taylor, Chief Championship Officer at Extreme E, said: “We are thrilled to be returning to the Goodwood Festival of Speed and are excited for this head-to-head duel between two of our teams, which we hope will be an exciting feature of the weekend for the Goodwood audience.

Though our ODYSSEY 21s are designed for off road terrains, we have seen in our brief history that our cars can tackle any conditions and will be quite a sight to see the drivers battle it out on the Hillclimb.”

You can watch Extreme E’s Goodwood Shootout on Sky Sports F1 and ITV1, or alternatively on the Goodwood website or YouTube livestream.

CORVETTE RACING AT WATKINS GLEN: Road to Redemption

Garcia, Taylor hope to rebound from Le Mans with Six Hours repeat

DETROIT (June 22, 2022) – While their run at the 24 Hours of Le Mans ended with disappointment, Antonio Garcia, Jordan Taylor and the rest of Corvette Racing’s squad in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship are back stateside for another shot at a long-distance race victory.

The Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen is the first race in the U.S. since May 1 for Corvette Racing and the rest for the field of competitors in the new GT Daytona (GTD) PRO category. Through five races, Garcia and Taylor stand second in Drivers points as does Chevrolet in the Manufacturers standings on the strength of a class victory at the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.

The No. 3 Corvette also arrives at The Glen leading GTD PRO in the Michelin Endurance Cup – a championship made up of the WeatherTech Championship’s four long-distance races. Given recent success at The Glen, there’s a better than average chance that advantage remains going into the weekend.
Corvette Racing has three victories at Watkins Glen since 2014 – including two last year. Garcia and Taylor won in the GT Le Mans (GTLM) category in last year’s Sahlen’s Six Hours as well as the WeatherTech 240 sprint a race a week later.

Garcia is one of nine drivers to win more than once in the Sahlen’s Six Hours and has five podium finishes in his last five races at The Glen, while Taylor won for the first time in the event a year ago.

Chevrolet has a strong history of success in the race with 18 victories – second among active manufacturers.

The GTD PRO Corvette differs in several ways from the C8.R that ran at Watkins Glen in 2021. Chief among the differences are additional weight, restricted power and customer Michelin tires that are mandated for all GTD entries as opposed to Michelins specifically designed for the C8.R in GTLM trim.

Chevrolet Motorsports Display On-Site at The Glen
In addition to the many series and events on the racetrack at Watkins Glen, fans will have plenty to see and experience from Chevrolet. The Chevrolet Motorsports Display will be full of Chevy vehicles that spectators can learn more about throughout the weekend.

The Chevrolet Motorsports Display opens at 8 a.m. Friday through Sunday and is located in the Fan Midway at Watkins Glen International. Numerous Chevrolet vehicles and other highlights include:

• The 2023 Corvette Z06 convertible
• Additional Chevrolet products such as Blazer RS, Silverado ZR2, Camaro 2SS 1LE and Colorado ZR2
• A Corvette Racing C8.R showcar and LT6.R engine
• An opportunity to receive a 2022 Team Chevy t-shirt

Fans should also be on the lookout for an additional Corvette on the racetrack. A Corvette Stingray will serve as Official Pace Car for the two-hour Tioga Downs Casino race for the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge starting at 3:45 p.m. ET on Saturday.

The Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen is scheduled for 10:40 a.m. ET on Sunday, June 26. The race will stream live on Peacock with USA’s live television coverage beginning at 2 p.m. ETIMSA Radio will air all on-track sessions beginning at IMSA.com along with XM 207 and SiriusXM Online 992.

ANTONIO GARCIA, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: “I really, really like this race. I enjoy the track a lot. I believe it was my very first race in America in GRAND-AM. We’ve generally been strong there. Being a six-hour race, there always is something going on. It might be a super-hot race, there may be rain storms… you never know what’s a race at Watkins Glen is going to be like. That’s why experience is a good thing to have there. I think I’ve run in every different condition there so I’m looking forward to going back in this new class and see how this spec of the C8.R fits in there.”

JORDAN TAYLOR, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: “Winning last year’s race was a big deal. It was always on my dad’s bucket list of races to win as a driver. I think it was the only endurance race that he hadn’t won. He won Daytona, Sebring, Petit Le Mans and Le Mans, so the one he always talked about was the Six Hours. The same was happening for me. I had gone all these years without winning it. I finished second a couple of times, I think, and it was always something little. To finally have everything click and work out was pretty special. It really kicked off our season last year with a good run of success.”
“Watkins Glen was always a cool race for me from obviously watching sports car racing but also being a fan of motorsport. It was one of the few natural-terrain road courses that Formula One used in America. Seeing old footage of Formula One cars around there and still having the classic blue guardrails to pay homage to the history is pretty special. To win at those types of tracks is really nice.”

CORVETTE RACING AT WATKINS GLEN: By the Numbers
• 1: As in one team, one manufacturer and one model of car for 24 years of racing: Corvette Racing, Chevrolet and the Chevrolet Corvette
• 2: Wins at Watkins Glen International in 2021 for Antonio Garcia and Jordan Taylor: the Sahlen’s Six Hours and the WeatherTech 240 in consecutive weeks
• 2: Wins and pole positions in the Sahlen’s Six Hours for Antonio Garcia. He won GTLM in 2014 and 2021 and was the GTLM pole-sitter in 2019 and 2021
• 3: Victories at Watkins Glen for Corvette Racing since its debut there in 2014: 2014 and 2021 Sahlen’s Six Hours, and 2021 WeatherTech 240
• 5: Consecutive podium finishes for Antonio Garcia at Watkins Glen dating back to 2017
• 14: Manufacturer Championships for Chevrolet and Corvette Racing since 2001
• 18: Victories for Chevrolet in the Sahlen’s Six Hours, ranking second among all manufacturers
• 23: Number of drivers to compete for Corvette Racing at Le Mans. That number grew in 2021 with Nick Tandy, Nicky Catsburg and Alexander Sims joining the lineup.
• 25: Tracks at which Corvette Racing has won races – Baltimore, Charlotte Motor Speedway, COTA, Canadian Tire Motorsport Park/Mosport, Daytona, Detroit, Houston, Laguna Seca, Le Mans, Lime Rock, Long Beach, Miami, Mid-Ohio, Portland, Road America, Road Atlanta, Sebring, Sonoma, St. Petersburg, Texas, Trois Rivieres, Utah, VIR, Washington DC and Watkins Glen
• 121: Victories worldwide for Corvette Racing – 113 in North America and eight at Le Mans
• 257: Event starts by Corvette Racing since 1999
• 8,476.20: Number of racing miles completed by Corvette Racing in its eight previous trips to Watkins Glen. That represents 2,493 laps… or more than four full trips around the Earth at its equator. The two Corvettes combined to go over the 100,000 mile mark in the 2021 race.
• 344,240.56: Total number of racing miles completed by Corvette Racing since its inception. To put that in perspective, Corvette Racing is more than halfway to the distance traveled by Apollo 13 – the longest manned spaceflight in history: 622,268 miles. That means Corvette Racing has raced to the moon and more than halfway back!

Nashville up Next for DEX Imaging Team

Like lots of working folks everywhere, Harrison Burton, crew chief Brian Wilson and the rest of the No. 21 DEX Imaging team are back at work after a week off, refreshed and ready to put maximum effort into the job at hand.

For the DEX team, the immediate task centers around this weekend’s Ally 400 at Nashville Speedway.

“Everyone on our team enjoyed the off week and used it to recharge for the second half of the season,” Wilson said. “With the progress we’ve made recently at intermediate-style tracks and including Gateway, we all look forward to continuing in that direction this weekend in Nashville.

“The 1.33-mile track is a mix of those styles of tracks with some Dover mixed in being a concrete surface.”

Wilson said the schedule at Nashville works in the team’s favor.

“This weekend is one of our last extended-practice weekends with extra time and sets of tires,” he said. “Our focus is on unloading with the speed we had at Gateway and using the session to learn in ways we can’t with a normal practice.”

Wilson also said he’s expecting another strong effort from the over-the-wall members of the team on Sunday.

“At Sonoma our crew had great speed on pit road, so from practice through the race I look forward to executing a full weekend with competitive speed in all facets,” he said.

Practice at Nashville is set to begin Friday at 5:30 p.m. (6:30 Eastern Time) and run for about an hour. Qualifying starts just after noon (1 p.m. Eastern) on Saturday, and the Ally 400 is scheduled to get the green flag just after 4 p.m. (5 p.m. Eastern Time) on Sunday. Stage breaks are set for Laps 90 and 185.

Beginning this week, Cup Series coverages switches from FOX to NBC. NBC will broadcast the Nashville race, with USA covering practice and qualifying.

Driver Quotes

“I can’t wait to get to Nashville this weekend in our brand new Huck’s Market Chevrolet. It’s my first time at this race track so having a normal practice and being able to get seat time is going to be a huge help. This team had a really good run with Josh (Berry) last year, so hopefully we can match that, but be a few spots better so we can show everyone at Huck’s a great time.” – Sam Mayer

“I’m really looking forward to getting back to Nashville this weekend. We had a fast car here last season and I feel extremely confident that we can be just as quick when we unload for practice on Friday with our Hellmann’s Chevrolet. It was great to have these two weekends off to recharge and I know that Jason (Burdett, crew chief) and everyone on this JR Motorsports team is ready to get back to the track and see what we can do.” – Justin Allgaier

“Being back home in Nashville this weekend and seeing some family and friends is great. I thought I had a car capable of winning last year but a late caution caught us a lap down after green-flag stops and halted our progress back towards the front. We still came away with a top five but it would be really nice to get a win in front of the home crowd like we did a few weeks ago in Charlotte.” – Josh Berry

“The break was good for our Bass Pro Shops/TrueTimber/Black Rifle Coffee team, and we’re ready to get back after it this weekend at Nashville. We had a solid race last year, just battled some handling issues, and we earned a top-10 finish in our first time there. Luke (Lambert, crew chief) and our team are pumped to get back going this weekend.” – Noah Gragson

Weekend schedule for Nashville

NASCAR travels to Nashville Superspeedway for a full weekend of competition. The unique 1.33-mile D-shaped oval is the longest concrete surface track on this year’s schedule.

Last year was the first trip to Nashville for the Cup Series and the race was won by Kyle Larson who led 264 of the 300 laps. This season has produced 12 different Cup Series winners with 10 races remaining in the regular season. This leaves only four available spots for the post-season Playoffs.

The Xfinity Series returned to Nashville in 2021 after a 10-year break with Cup Series driver Kyle Busch taking the checkered flag. Greg Biffle won the inaugural Xfinity Series race at Nashville, his first win in the series, in 2001.

There are only three races left in the Camping World Truck Series regular season. Five drivers have qualified for the Playoffs, leaving five open spots to be filled in those three races. This means that a minimum of two spots will be secured by points. Ryan Preece, running a part-time schedule, is the defending race winner.

NASCAR National Series – NCS | NXS | NCWTS

10 to go… With 10 races to go in the regular season, five of Toyota’s six drivers currently hold Playoff berths. Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch and Kurt Busch are three of the 12 Cup Series winners this season with 2017 champion Martin Truex Jr. and Christopher Bell holding down spots with their consistent performance.

Bell looks to begin another top-10 streak… Bell’s career-best streak of five straight top-10 finishes ended in Sonoma, but the Oklahoma-native looks to start another run this weekend. He led Toyota with an eighth-place finish one season ago in his Nashville track debut.

Jones lone Toyota driver with Nashville experience… Martinsville winner Brandon Jones is the lone Toyota driver in the Xfinity race this Saturday with track experience at Nashville Superspeedway. Jones drove to a sixth-place finish at Nashville last season.

Bayne, Earnhardt return… Trevor Bayne and Jeffrey Earnhardt are both back behind the wheel of Toyota GR Supras this weekend. Bayne returns in the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 18 Supra for his fifth start of the season. Bayne, who returns in Loudon, has three top-10 finishes in his four starts this season. Earnhardt is making his sixth start for Sam Hunt Racing. He has top-20 finishes in three of his five starts with the team this season.

Toyota continues to lead the Trucks… Three Toyota drivers continue to be a part of the four-car battle for the regular season championship in the Truck Series. The 2021 regular season champion John Hunter Nemechek took back the points lead with a runner-up finish at Knoxville Raceway on Saturday. Reigning champion Ben Rhodes and 2021 Rookie of the Year Chandler Smith are amongst the drivers that are in close pursuit in the final three races of the Truck Series regular season.

Majeski continues to add to top-five total… Ty Majeski continues to impress in his first full-time campaign in the NASCAR Truck Series. The Wisconsin-native has extended his Playoff points advantage to over 100 points over the cutoff with five top-five finishes in the last seven events. Nashville was on Majeski’s limited schedule last season. He finished in eighth.

NASCAR Regional Series – ARCA

Smith continues to add accolades… Toyota development driver Sammy Smith continues to impress as he added his first national ARCA win to the tally last weekend in Berlin. Smith, who averages a second-place finish in his three national ARCA starts this season, is making his track debut at Minnesota’s Elko Speedway this weekend.

NHRA – Top Fuel | Funny Car

Capps delivers first for GR Supra… Ron Capps delivered the first victory for the Toyota GR Supra in Bristol in just his fourth start for Team Toyota. Capps is coming off an incredible performance on-track as his team recorded the low elapsed time in every session in Bristol eliminations.

Ashley part of a Bristol Toyota sweep… Justin Ashley didn’t let a final round loss in Epping get him down as he scored his second victory of the season in Bristol. He was part of a Toyota Racing sweep of the nitro classes with Capps in Bristol. It was the first time since Las Vegas in 2016 that Toyota drivers swept the nitro classes (Antron Brown, Alexis DeJoria).
