World Wide Technology Raceway attracts rush of fans from across North America for NASCAR Cup Series Race in June 2022

ST. LOUIS (December 14, 2021) – In the first months since its announcement, the June 5, 2022, NASCAR Cup Series race at World Wide Technology Raceway has earned significant fan and sponsor interest, generating thousands of ticket deposits and more than 500 inquiries for hospitality suites and on-site camping experiences. More than half of the available tickets for the race have been claimed by existing ticket holders with the balance available for public sale on December 15, 2021. Further, improvements outside the venue will upgrade the driver, race and fan experience as Ameren Illinois makes critical enhancements to bolster the local electric grid that serves customers in and around the racetrack, including upgrading the two circuits currently feeding the venue and adding a third circuit.

“The technology that drives modern racing, coupled with on-site attendance from broadcast media outlets and more than 60,000 fans, requires significant power, and Ameren Illinois is helping ensure we host a seamless event for all,” said Curtis Francois, owner and CEO, World Wide Technology Raceway.

“We know the NASCAR Cup Series race is going to have a tremendous economic impact on the region,” said Richard J. Mark, chairman and president, Ameren Illinois. “This upgrade, which is part of our overall statewide plan to build a cleaner, greener, more resilient grid, plays a role in making WWTR a premier motorsports venue.”

The strong response is indicative of what the sporting world knows – the NASCAR Cup Series with its 80-million fans delivers millions of dollars each year to host communities. An economic impact study by The Rawlings Sports Business Management Department at Maryville University projects this race will produce at least $60 million in economic impact for the St. Louis market annually.

Venue Improvements

The WWTR team is managing many improvements to the venue, focusing heavily on the highly desirable infield experience including premium camping sites, a large interactive fan entertainment area adjacent to the garages, and upgraded driver and team owner access. The hospitality suite tower is undergoing renovation as well with updated interiors and an enhanced VIP entrance. More than $40 million in improvements are underway for the 2022 racing season, which will include the inaugural NASCAR Cup Series race at WWTR.

Hemric, Gragson to Join Allmendinger in All-Star Lineup for No. 16 Camaro ZL1

LEXINGTON, N.C. (December 14, 2021) – Acquiring three out of the four 2021 NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) Championship 4 drivers, Kaulig Racing’s No. 16 Camaro ZL1 will be piloted by AJ Allmendinger, Daniel Hemric and Noah Gragson, as each will compete part-time in the NASCAR Cup Series (NCS).

While the team announced earlier this year that Allmendinger would pilot the No. 16 for select races in the 2022 NCS season alongside full-time driver, Justin Haley, Kaulig Racing has finalized its second, full-time entry with Gragson and Hemric.

“We think our roster for the 2022 season features some great drivers,” said team president, Chris Rice. “Having three out of the four Xfinity Series championship contenders helping to build our new Cup Series program, is truly a tremendous opportunity for this Kaulig Racing team. While these guys have been fierce competitors for the last few years, having them bring that same tenacity as teammates will be extremely fun to watch and a great way for this team to grow in its first, full season in the Cup Series.”

With the 2021 NXS champion already tabbed for Kaulig Racing’s flagship, No. 11 Chevrolet in the series, Hemric will make his return to the NCS for the first time since winning the Cup Series Rookie of the Year award in 2019. Hemric has made 38 starts in the NCS, earning a pole award, one top-five and two top-10 finishes.

“I have had the chance to race against some great drivers over the past few years,” said Hemric. “AJ (Allmendinger) is a great competitor, who can win on any track, and Noah [Gragson] and I have been teammates in the past at JR Motorsports. Each of us are different, but seeing how intense both AJ and Noah are as professionals gets me excited for this upcoming season. Now we have the opportunity to be able to lean on each other and try to build a program here at Kaulig Racing at the highest level of our sport. I feel fortunate to be a part of this.”

Finishing third in the 2021 NXS points standings, Noah Gragson will compete in 14 NCS races for Kaulig Racing, while Allmendinger and Hemric will participate in the remaining series events.

“This is a really unique opportunity I have with Kaulig Racing to be able to share the No. 16 with two of my biggest competitors in the Xfinity Series,” said Gragson. “I’ve had the chance to work with Daniel before, but it will be a new experience working with AJ. We’ve raced against each other for a few years now, and I think working as teammates will only help us get better as drivers.”

Payton Freeman Signs With MPM Marketing

Payton Freeman, a 19-year-old rising dirt late model star, has signed with MPM Marketing.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – (Dec. 14, 2021) – McCallister Precision Marketing officials are proud to announce the signing of 19-year-old rising dirt late model star Payton Freeman.

MPM Marketing, led by founder Tonya McCallister, will help guide Freeman as he continues to pursue a career motorsports.

Freeman burst on to the dirt super late model scene this year. In his first full season of super late model racing, Freeman hit the road with the Southern All Star Series. Along the way he earned victories at Clayhill Speedway in Atwood, Tenn., and I-75 Raceway in Sweetwater, Tenn.

Those two victories, coupled with a consistent season, allowed Freeman to secure the Southern All Star Series championship as well as the series’ rookie of the year award. In total, Freeman picked up four victories on dirt during the 2021 season.

The native of Commerce, Ga., grew up racing. He started in go karts before eventually working his way from four cylinders to 604 dirt late models. In November of 2018 a fire devastated the family race shop and put Freeman on the sidelines.

Undeterred, Freeman and company were back on track by March of the following year. In his first race back after the fire, Freeman drove to victory at Georgia’s Senoia Raceway. It’s that kind of determination that McCallister knows will pay dividends for Freeman going forward.

“Payton is a very smart and determined young man,” McCallister said. “To come back from that devastating fire in 2018 and win in his first race back the following season shows just how mentally tough he is. He’s got the talent and he’s got the drive and we’re excited to work with him as he purses his dream of a career in motorsports.”

HAMPTON, Ga. (Dec. 13, 2021) – Atlanta Motor Speedway and Fr8Auctions are upping the ante for the first NASCAR race on the newly revamped speedway in 2022.

Fr8Auctions is the entitlement partner for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event on Saturday, March 19, which will be the first NASCAR race held on the all-new Atlanta Motor Speedway. To mark the historic first, the previously 200-mile race distance went back on the “auction block” and the “hammer price” came in eight miles higher than last year.

As a result, the first race held during Atlanta’s spring NASCAR weekend will be the Fr8 208.

“When I saw the new Atlanta Motor Speedway for the first time, I knew we needed to do something special with the first race,” said Fr8Auctions founder Marcus Barela. “Partnering with our home track has been a great opportunity to generate awareness of our auctions, and we’re excited to deliver eight more miles of thrills on this all-new speedway in 2022!”

The new 208-mile race distance will require 135 laps around the 1.54-mile Atlanta Motor Speedway as drivers in the Camping World Truck Series race around the revamped 28-degree banked turns for the first time.

“I know our fans will enjoy the extra racing we’ll have on our revamped speedway thanks to Marcus Barela and Fr8Auctions,” said Atlanta Motor Speedway Executive Vice President and General Manager, Brandon Hutchison. “Never before has an intermediate track challenged NASCAR racers with high-banks as steep as ours, so we know the action that we’ll see for the first time in March will be one-of-a-kind.”

The Fr8 208 is part of Atlanta’s same-day NASCAR doubleheader, preceding the Nalley Cars 250 Xfinity Series race. Saturday tickets good for both races start at just $35; kids 12 and under are free on Saturday.

The spring NASCAR weekend is headlined by the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 NASCAR Cup Series race on Sunday, March 20. Weekend packages for all three races are available starting at just $59.

Thwaits and Showtime Motorsports at the Indianapolis Performance Racing Industry Show

Indianapolis, INDIANA – December 13, 2021 – The annual Performance Racing Industry Show roared back to life at the Indiana Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis last week after an enforced sabbatical in 2020. This year saw a power packed show that had buyers and exhibitors flocking from all over the globe. A real gathering of motorsport manufactures, teams and media was present in full force. The show was very well attended and among the keenest participants was Showtime Motorsports principal Ken Thwaits, whose Franklin Road Apparel cars have made such an impact since joining the Trans Am family.

Ken was crowned Extreme GT Champion in 2020 behind the wheel of the Audi R8 LMS Ultra and arguably surpassed that achievement when finishing in P4 overall in the 2021 Trans Am TA Class Drivers’ Championship in the Franklin Road Chevrolet Camaro. We were lucky enough to catch up with Ken in Indianapolis and asked him about his presence at the show and his plans for 2022.

“The main reason that I’m here is that it was canceled last year! This is the first PRI Show in 24 months which is awesome, and it’s packed here which is great to see. I don’t know if you’d call the attendees fans but they’re the hardcore buyers of parts for the racecars and it’s great to see them flocking here.”

“The reason I’m here is to catch up with my Trans Am circles and affiliates and see what rules will be in place and what will not be in place [for next season]. We had a draft of the rules sent out to all the teams and I want to see what transpired. We are already full steam getting all the cars ready for Sebring.”

Ken is always keen to upgrade his cars and find new partners, something he alluded to when he added, “The other thing is to meet the suppliers that we work with or that we want to work with and discuss if there are potential synergies between our race team and the products that they sell. Can they benefit from our TV package and social media machine that we’ve created. We can in turn benefit from the products that they provide us to go racing. We’re also seeing our good friends at Mike Cope Racing and really everybody that’s involved in the Series that’s here.”

The media profile Ken referred to was further boosted by a CBS Sports Network announcement for the 2022 season – giving The Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli a fine platform for cable viewing in the new year.

Although still relatively new to Trans Am, Ken is a successful and experienced driver in his own right, “I came from the Ultimate Street Car Series sponsored by Optima batteries. I was the Champion in 2014 and their racing winner in 2017 after the SEMA show and that’s really the grand prize, it is their Indy 500. It’s great to catch up with them and they’ll be joining us in 2022 and SVRA for six races with us which is exciting news. It’s a stepping stone for drivers for the future.”

Ken was also quick to acknowledge his existing partners and suppliers and highlighted the important changes to the Trans Am TA Class formula for 2022, “PFC brakes have been great. We’ve got a new wheel and tire package with Forgeline wheels. The new wheel and tire package is expensive for the team owners to get the cars outfitted but you have to take advantage of the new diameter. We’ve got an 18-inch wheel so you can fit a bigger brake package under the car. The car really should be transformed. It’s going to make it feel much more like a tight race car. This is going to make it a little bit more predictable even though you’ve got that wild power, maybe more manners.”

Ken is keen to add a TA Class teammate to the Franklin Road Apparel team having just signed Cameron Lawrence and Carl Rydquist for the TA2 Championship, “We’re building an all new Camaro body TA car for a driver that we’re seeking and that car is coming along nicely. It’s going to be beautiful. It will be black and blue, car No. 7.”
