CORVETTE RACING AT LAGUNA SECA: Long-Awaited Victory for No. 4 Corvette

Milner, Tandy team for hard-fought GTLM win; Taylor, Garcia take second in No. 3 C8.R

MONTEREY, Calif. (Sept. 12, 2021) – Corvette Racing’s Tommy Milner and Nick Tandy took a hard-earned victory in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s GT Le Mans (GTLM) category Sunday with their second win of the season in the No. 4 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette C8.R.

The duo scored a one-lap victory – their first full-points win of the year – at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca for Corvette Racing’s first triumph there since 2014. It came as the program marked 23 consecutive years of racing on the Monterey Peninsula.

GTLM Drivers Championship leaders Antonio Garcia and Jordan Taylor placed second in the No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Corvette as the pair of mid-engine C8.Rs combined to lead every lap Sunday.

Milner and Tandy won a non-points race earlier this year at Detroit, and the No. 4 Corvette also won a 100-minute qualifying race ahead of the Rolex 24 At Daytona in January. Sunday was a break-through for the pairing in scoring maximum race points.

Milner started second in class and drove the first 58 minutes of the two-hour, 40-minute race before handing over to Tandy, who drove a double-stint to the end. He finished a lap clear of the sister Corvette as each car in the category made two stops due to a two-hour, 26-minute, green-flag run to the finish.

Taylor led for the entirety of his stint to open things in the No. 3 Corvette, which was the first of the C8.Rs to stop at the 51-minute mark. He handed off to Garcia, equipped with a full tank of fuel and fresh Michelin tires. Milner followed suit a couple of laps later, and Tandy set off in hot pursuit of the No. 3 C8.R.

He and Garcia engaged in a spirited battle with the two exchanging fastest GTLM race laps multiple times. Tandy, who set a GTLM track record at 1:21.827 (98.461 mph), got alongside his teammate at one point and inherited the lead for good when Garcia made his final stop with 49 minutes left.

The No. 4 Corvette came in a lap later and came out just ahead of Garcia, despite a trip through the gravel along Laguna Seca’s winding pitlane exit. Undeterred, Tandy slowly but steadily built a gap over Garcia to the end of the race.

Corvette Racing returns to action at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach on Saturday, Sept. 25.

TOMMY MILNER, NO. 4 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – GTLM RACE WINNER: “For us on the 4 car side, it feels like we have a monkey off our back a little bit with getting a full race win. We’ve had really fast Corvettes all year long, even last year with Olly (Gavin). For one reason or another, we couldn’t put it together – problems here and there, driver mistakes, problems on the pit stops, whatever it was. We’d have fast race cars but one little thing would trip us up. When you’re racing against guys like our teammates Jordan and Antonio… those guys are obviously on their game. Credit to those guys. They’ve done a phenomenal job for the last year-and-a-half and perfect pretty much all the time. It feels great today to get that win. We had a little issue with the car that felt like déjà vu as usual with something going wrong. Fortunately it didn’t put an end to our race and we were able to finish it out on top.”

WHAT WAS THE ISSUE WITH THE CAR? DID YOU FEEL LIKE YOU HAD THE MEASURE OVER THE 3 CORVETTE? “It looked good at the start. The car felt really good, the balance was great and pace was good. We had talked about splitting strategies between the two cars. Whoever was out front would do a three-stop and whoever was next would do a two-stop. I was just saving tires and fuel as best I could and wait for the opportunity for the 3 car to pit, then use everything left in fuel and tires before we stopped and hopefully have an advantage. The yellow kind of put an end to multiple strategies there. Still, saving tires helped me quite a bit in the first stint. Because the car was as good as it was, we were able to save tires… we weren’t driving it absolutely for every last little bit possible and killing the tires. This track is so tough on tires that you have to be nice to them to have good ones at the end.

“The problem we had, maybe I’m making a bigger deal out of it than it actually was because in the end it didn’t affect our race. It was an alternator issue. It was still functioning but it wasn’t functioning as well as it should. There was some concern for a little bit and it was a little hot in there for a little while. But in the end, everything was OK and the team was happy with the state it was in. When you hear that radio transmission, your first thought – especially for us – was here we go again. That wasn’t the case today.

“The Corvette was fantastic. The balance lately has been good. Here again today it was really good. It was great to finally show a result for all the hard work that all the crew guys have put in for so long. They deserve a lot of credit. They’re here first at the track and leave last. Those guys want to win just as much as we do. It’s frustrating for them to have little issues and not get a result. So I’m happy for Nick and myself, but most of all I’m happy for the crew guys on the 4 Corvette who have soldiered through quite a bit over the last year or two with these new cars and getting the result they deserve.”

NICK TANDY, NO. 4 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – GTLM RACE WINNER: “I’ll echo a lot of what Tommy said. My first year with Corvette Racing has been such a kind of mixed set of emotions. The car is great. It’s great working with this team in a superb atmosphere with guys that know exactly what they are doing. We were just kind of missing that final result. We had the win at Detroit, which I’ll always count as a bona-fide win, but we haven’t had a points-paying win. It was getting a little bit long in the tooth. Going to all these races, running well and up front, we just weren’t winning races… it was similar the last time out at Le Mans. It’s great to get that slate wiped and know that we still have three more races this year. We’ve got momentum. The car was fantastic all weekend. It gives me hope and looks good for the rest of the season. It’s been such an emotional roller-coaster. A lot of the time, you think you put the work in and you just see the result just in front of you but it just doesn’t get there. To finally get there and stand on the top step with my buddy, it feels good. We want to do it three more this year.”

THE LAST PIT STOP: “When you’re racing guys like Jordan and Antonio in the 3 Corvette, you’ve got to be on your game and you can’t afford to give away any time. The problem is that the previous stint I exited the pit and braked way too early (before returning to the track) and thought I’d given up too much time. Knowing it was going to be close on where we were going to come out on the last stop, I braked a little later – not by much! – but she didn’t want to stop. The front wheel locked and took a little trip across the gravel. I managed to get back into the pit exit before blending on the track. There was no real harm done. We gave up a little bit of time but we still managed to stay in front.”

ANTONIO GARCIA, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – SECOND IN GTLM: “It was good for a 1-2 finish for Corvette and that we could cover the Porsche on any possible strategy. Having such a clean race with just one yellow made things a tiny bit easier. Today it went our way. Another Corvette 1-2 even if it was another super-tight battle with our teammates. Those are always fun to have. As I’ve said many times, there is no worse adversary than your teammates because they have the same tools. Whatever advantage you have they have it too, and whatever weakness you have they have the same. This time the win went to Tommy and Nick. They were just a tiny bit better than us, but I’m happy we showed well and had a nice, clean race between the two Corvettes. I gave everything I had, for sure. I didn’t have anything else.”

JORDAN TAYLOR, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – SECOND IN GTLM: “It’s a little disappointing not to get the win. At the same time it was a good day for Corvette Racing with another 1-2 finish. It was nice for the 4 car guys to get the monkey off their backs. We had a good Corvette. From the pole, leading most of the race and with the pit stop cycle and strategy, we just missed it a little bit. In these races, you can’t make any little mistakes. Once the yellow came out at the beginning, it kind of put everyone on a three-stop strategy. There were some options for a three-stop but you needed it to be green the whole race for that to work. Once the yellow came out at the beginning, everyone was locked in to the same strategy. But it wasn’t a bad day for the championship, so we can look forward to Long Beach and focus on that one.”

Wright Motorsports Scores Win and Podium Finish at Laguna Seca

MONTEREY, Calif., (September 12, 2021) – Wright Motorsports put forth an impressive performance this weekend at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, securing two pole positions, one win, and one third-place result between its two IMSA programs. Jan Heylen, Max Root, and the crew of the No. 16 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport won from pole position on Saturday in the Michelin Pilot Challenge, intensifying the fight for the GS points championship battle. In the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, Patrick Long and Trent Hindman secured a third-place finish from pole position, putting up a strong fight to the end for maximum points. In Indianapolis, the team’s Porsche Carrera Cup North America Presented by the Cayman Islands secured three additional top-five finishes, bringing the 2021 tally to twelve in five races.

“From our Porsche Carrera Cup North America program in Indianapolis to our IMSA efforts in Monterey, it’s been a strong weekend for us,” said team owner John Wright. “We’ve shown no matter the series, we can competitively and consistently, and now we’re fully dialed into maximizing our results for the remainder of the season.”

In another impressive qualifying session, Trent Hindman secured his first GTD pole position of 2021 setting the No. 16 Porsche 911 GT3 R from first on Sunday’s race. He held the position in the opening laps until the first and only full-course caution, but the BMW of Robby Foley took the top position after an early-race restart. Hindman stayed close and maintained position, assuming the lead when the BMW came in to pit lane for its first stop and driver change to Bill Auberlen. Hindman gained as much time as he could with the clear track, building a 1.1-second lead before pitting for Patrick Long to take over with a new set of tires and a full tank of fuel. A strong stop by the team sent the Porsche out in second place, with a seven-second gap to the leader. With the all-clear from the pit box, Long pushed hard gaining half of a second with each lap. Lurking in Long’s shadow, Laurens Vanthoor followed Long through the turns of the California course, eventually making the pass and taking the lead from Auberlen in the BMW.

Long wisely preserved his tires, knowing he’d need them for a strong late-race push. Long pitted for his final stop, rejoining just ahead of the BMW, but the warmer tires of the car behind allowed for a pass later in that lap. With one hour to go, Long ran fifth, again chasing Auberlen while also working to preserve the Porsche’s tires. In the final half-hour, his patience paid off, and he made the pass, pulling away from the BMW with ease. He charged forward in the last 20 minutes, quickly closing in on the No. 1 Lamborghini in second place, but ultimately crossed the line in third place.

With three races remaining, Wright Motorsports stands fifth in the GTD Team standings. Next, the championship heads to the streets of Long Beach, California for the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, September 26.

Patrick Long
It was a super-challenging race and a game of tire strategy. We tried two different things in each of our two final stints and really found a great balance at the end. Unfortunately, we ran out of time to catch the No. 1 car ahead, and we had to settle for third. Great job by the team. I wish I had a little more for them today, but we’ll keep our head down and keep these podiums coming until the end of the year and see where we shake out.

Trent Hindman
Obviously, we really wanted to convert qualifying to the same result in the race today. We just, unfortunately, came up a little short, and that’s okay. It was still a beautifully executed race by the Wright Motorsports guys. A big thanks to 1st Phorm, Mountain Motorsports, and Ryan Hardwick for all their support and making this happen. We have a couple of really good key points that we’ll work on going into Long Beach and be as equally as racey there.

Michelin Pilot Challenge
WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca
After full-season driver Ryan Hardwick tested positive for COVID-19, the team called in Max Root, who was slated to run in the Porsche Carrera Cup North America Presented by the Cayman Islands triple header at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In his second IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge qualifying session of 2021, young Max Root duplicated his performance from Sebring, taking pole position by 0.5 seconds. In the No. 16 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport, He led the field to green on Saturday afternoon and immediately created a several-second gap over the field. The race stayed green for the entirety of Root’s stint, and he pitted under green for the mandatory driver change. After a tire swap and a fuel fill, Jan Heylen took over, joining the race with one hour, seventeen minutes to go. Heylen entered the race in second place, but made the mass on the leading No. 40 Mustang, working to create a gap over the Mercedes of Eric Foss.

Further back, Bill Auberlen in the Turner Motorsports BMW had his sights set on the front, and he pushed his way to the front. All thoughts were on championship points, as the top two in the GS team standings battled it out. Heylen held off Auberlen, as the BMW used up its tires looking for the opportunity to make the pass. At this point in the race, Wright was playing the race on fuel strategy, hoping to conserve enough to make it on one stop during the race. All that changed when the BMW pitted for a splash of fuel, which would allow them to be more aggressive on track against the rest of the field. After a lap or two of consideration, while Heylen tried to gain as much track position as possible, the strategists at Wright called Heylen in for a quick serving of fuel. Heylen rejoined just behind the BMW, closing any space between the two cars to put heavy pressure on Auberlen. With 30 minutes remaining, the BMW, after several occurrences of having two wheels off the track, suffered a flat tire, forcing the car to limp back to pit lane. Heylen reclaimed first place, and closely managed his gap over the field all the way to the checkered flag. On Saturday afternoon, Wright Motorsports earned its first Michelin Pilot Challenge win after four podiums so far this season. The victory closes the gap to the leaders to a mere 80 points, ensuring the team’s standing to fight for the championship with two races remaining.

VIRginia International Raceway will host round nine, the penultimate race of the 2021 Michelin Pilot Challenge, on October 8.

Jan Heylen
It was a super race for the whole team and a big thank you goes to Ryan for putting us out here even though he’s missing the race. I can’t say enough about his commitment to the program, and to pay him back with a win is just awesome. Max was our natural stand-in, and he did an awesome job like he did at Sebring. It’s great to have guys like Max on the program and to be able to give them a place when the opportunity comes. John Wright and Bobby Vigilone have put a lot of hard work into this program and it’s nice to see all the payoff. Max did a really good job qualifying on pole first, and then his first stint, he did great controlling the race. Then all hell broke loose as it became a fuel race. Bill Auberlen pitted, and that caught us by surprise. We ultimately decided to stop saving fuel and go on a similar strategy, which put us behind them when we came out of pit lane. At the time, l wasn’t too stoked about it, but that’s what made the race for us in the end by putting pressure on Bill and forcing the team into a mistake. We won the race and the BMW lost some valuable points. Today put us back in the championship and couldn’t have gone any better. We’re ready for Ryan to come back and finish the season strong.

Max Root
It was a really interesting race. It was pretty easy on my stint. I kept it clean and kept the car up front. I was on the edge of my seat for Jan’s entire stint. I’m happy to finish up in first for the team, for Ryan Hardwick, 1st Phorm, and everyone involved.
PORSCHE CARRERA CUP NORTH AMERICA Presented by The Cayman Islands
Indianapolis Motor Speedway
While luck was not on the side of Hutton McKenna in the triple header at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the No. 88 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car was able to secure three-top ten results, finishing as high as eighth in race one. John Goetz and the No. 57 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car finished in the top five in all three races, narrowly missing a podium finish in race one. The strong weekend puts Goetz fourth in the Pro-Am point standings. The series next races at VIRginia International Raceway, October 8-10.

Podiums All Around at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca

Monterey, Calif. (September 12, 2021) — Marching into WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca with five drivers in four cars across three classes, the Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini Super Trofeo outfit showcased their talents in two 50-minute races around WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca’s 2.238-mile track this weekend. The No. 1 Prestige Performance Lamborghini Super Trofeo secured a third-place finish in Saturday’s race after Kyle Marcelli qualified P2 earlier that day. The team started on pole for Race 2 thanks to a flying qualifying lap from Daniel Formal. Come Sunday morning, the rest was a formality, as the No. 1 held P1 from flag to flag. The team saved their best for last in 2021, as the win marked their third out of the five final North American rounds. The team completed the weekend with six total podiums across three classes.

Ashton Harrison completed an impressive drive to secure second place behind the wheel of the No. 25 Harrison Contracting LST in Race 1. She was unlucky in Race 2, enduring a spin, but she carried on admirably to finish third. Harrison leaves Laguna Seca with her sixth and seventh trophies of the year.

The No. 53 Wayne Taylor Racing LST, piloted by Jordan Missig, was looking for more podiums after sweeping Road America in the previous two rounds. Although he just missed the third step in Race 1 after a brief off-track moment, Missig showed excellent pace, pressuring Pro cars ahead. He spun while chasing the No. 61 Pro car into Turn 9 in Race 2, but recovered nicely to grab second place.

Race 1 was unlucky for Randy Sellari, driver of the No. 03 JG Wentworth LST. He was taken off the track by a three-car accident ahead and was beached in the gravel, ending his race. With the team working through the night to fix the car, Sellari rebounded superbly in Race 2, securing a personal best second place finish and his first podium of the year.

After a tricky, but rewarding weekend at Laguna Seca, the Wayne Taylor Racing drivers are looking forward to competing in the final rounds of the championship during the World Finals race weekend, October 28-31, in Misano, Italy.

Kyle Marcelli, No. 1 Prestige Performance with Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo (PRO)
“We struggled in the early part of the season and really couldn’t figure out why. We made some wholesale changes after Watkins Glen and it’s a testament to this team, Prestige Performance with Wayne Taylor Racing. They’re the best in business and when we aren’t winning, they turn the car around for us. To win three of the last four, we’re on cloud nine. We’re going to go to Italy and keep searching for wins. Unfortunately, we aren’t in the points hunt for the overall championship due to the circumstances at Watkins Glen, but we have a handle on this Lamborghini now and we’re excited for the World Final weekend.”

Daniel Formal, No. 1 Prestige Performance with Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo (PRO)
“Great weekend here for Rounds 9 and 10 of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America Championship. Race 1, we didn’t really have the pace and finished P3. Race 2 was a different story. We worked so hard with the team at Wayne Taylor Racing and they gave us a fantastic race car. I led from the beginning and Kyle ended up winning by almost 15 seconds! It was an amazing, amazing race. So happy for the team. That’s three wins in four races and I’m so excited for the end of the year.”

Ashton Harrison, No. 25 Harrison Contracting with Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini Super Trofeo (AM)
“Happy to walk away this weekend with a second and third place finish. Tough racing this weekend, but we pulled through with great points after a few mechanical problems early on. Thank you to the entire team, especially my car chief, Shawn Ford. On to Italy!”

Randy Sellari, No. 03 JG Wentworth with Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini Super Trofeo (AM)
“My spirits were down yesterday after the wreck. I wasn’t sure if we could get the car back together. I’ve got to hand it to the Prestige Performance with Wayne Taylor Racing crew. What a job. They were up until 3 a.m. and returned at 6 a.m. this morning to get it ready. They gave me a car that performed flawlessly and I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome. With their help, my sponsor, J.G. Wentworth, my driver coach, Sheena Monk, I’m very happy today, it turned out well.”

Jordan Missig, No. 53 Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini Super Trofeo (LB Cup)
“It was a struggle at first, getting used to the car, used to the track and the undulations of the corners. We were behind the 8-ball to start off with in practice, but little by little we worked hard as a team, grinding away, finding tenths and seconds here and there. We eventually got close enough to run with the fast guys once qualifying and the race began. Can’t thank the guys at Prestige Performance with Wayne Taylor Racing enough. They put together an awesome car and work together so well. Race 2 had ups and downs, but we put our head down after a mistake and were able to get a podium.”

Dominant Win for the No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca

Dominant Win for the No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca

Monterey, Calif. (September 12, 2021) — The No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 secured their third victory of the 2021 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship at the Monterey Sports Car Championship and third win overall at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. The triumph extends their lead in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, bringing their points total to 2,765 and extending their lead over the second place No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac DPi to 100 points.

First time IMSA pole winner Filipe Albuquerque led into the Andretti Hairpin from the green flag and never looked back. Despite a minor rear brake issue during the opening stint, Filipe set the pace. The lead changed intermittently through each pit cycle, but victory for No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 was never in doubt.

Ricky Taylor took the wheel with an hour and 30-minutes remaining, crucially staying ahead of lapped DPi traffic. The crew worked fast to clean the brake duct, solving the issue during a stop, and as traffic slowed his competitors, Taylor opened the gap to an impressive 20-seconds on his way to the checkered flag. Ricky showed his experience by avoiding colliding LMP2 cars in a hair-raising moment at Turn 9 of the final lap, bringing the car home to cheers from the pit wall.

The victory, their third of the season, was the team’s most dominant of the 2021 campaign to date. Their closest championship rivals, the No. 31 and No. 55 Mazda Motorsports DPi, finished in P3 and P5 respectively. Today’s win is the 45th for Wayne Taylor Racing in IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship competition. As the championship heats up with two rounds remaining, the No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 team is rising to the challenge.

“Everybody before the weekend was saying, ‘the Jaws music is playing, they’re under pressure now,’” said Ricky Taylor. “We felt like we were in control. We’ve had strong cars and the team’s been executing well, but things haven’t quite been going our way. But we’re the only ones that knew it. Today, I was really proud of the team. They responded to the Jaws music and the pressure by executing perfectly. The car was dominant. Everyone at HPD and Acura worked really hard between the races to give us the best possible engine control and power. Brian and the No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 boys changed the car from the traditional setup. We made lots of developments. The car was creative and well-thought-out, and it showed on track today. This is one of those wins that we have to remember and strive for in the future.”

“What a dream weekend. I love this weekend,” said Filipe Albuquerque. “Pole position and the win. There is nothing else we can ask for. Yesterday, I was super happy with pole. Today, we started well, but second stint was super hard. We had a problem on the rear brake duct, so it was overheating the rear tires and was super hard to drive. I was thinking that it would be incredibly hard for my teammate, Ricky, to do the rest of the race like that. Luckily, in the pit stop, they were able to clean the duct. I was confident in my teammate, I trust Ricky so much, and he delivered. He controlled the race, dominated, and caught the No. 60 Meyer Shank Racing DPi that was on another strategy. He won the race by 20-seconds. Pretty simple. The No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 was perfect, perfect execution, the perfect weekend for us. We had the pace, we dominated, and we took the win.”

“This was obviously the result we came here to get.” said team owner Wayne Taylor. “I’m really happy. The team did a fantastic job in the pit stops. Brian and Logan did an outstanding job on the strategy. The drivers, Filipe getting the pole, leading, giving Ricky the car, and Ricky finishing the race was just perfect. For all our sponsors, Konica Minolta and Harrison Contracting, and all the people that support us. Long Beach next will be tough, because all of DPi will be hot on us, like in Detroit. But at least we achieved what we had to do, and there was no coming second this weekend.”

The No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 2021 returns to action for the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach on September 24-25. Practice begins on Friday at 12:45 p.m. PT. Green flag will wave on Sunday, September 25 at 5:05 p.m. PT with live coverage on TrackPass on NBC Sports Gold.

Chevrolet makes big moves in Countdown to Championship opener

• Greg Anderson ties Warren Johnson’s Pro Stock wins record at 97
• John Force takes Funny Car points lead with runner-up finish
• Brittany Force sets Top Fuel record with seventh No. 1 qualifier in a row

READING, Pa. (Sept. 12, 2021) – Greg Anderson had heard “When are you going to get the monkey off your back?” ad infinitum since hoisting the Pro Stock Wally on May 2 at Atlanta Dragway.

The four-time National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Pro Stock champion answered that question at Maple Grove Raceway, winning the Mopar Express Lane NHRA Nationals to tie his former boss for the most career victories in the class at 97.

Now Anderson, driver of the HendrickCar.com Chevrolet Camaro SS, will be asked “When are you going to win the big one?” He has a succinct answer.
“It’s coming,” said Anderson, who defeated fellow champion Erica Enders in the final.

“It feels pretty cool to make some history today. After the Atlanta race we were on a roll and I kind of dropped the ball and couldn’t find a way to the winner’s circle,” said Anderson, who claimed victory No. 97 in his 164th final. “It just feels fantastic. To tie Warren Johnson for the wins record, that’s saying a lot.”

The opening round of the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship also saw John Force move to the top of the Funny Car standings with a runner-up finish in the PEAK Antifreeze & Coolant Camaro SS. Force, the No. 11 qualifier, defeated teammate Robert Hight, the No. 2 qualifier in the Automobile Club of Southern California Camaro SS, in the semifinals.

Brittany Force set a NHRA Top Fuel season record with her seventh consecutive No. 1 qualifier – and ninth in 14 races – with a 3.660-second pass in the Flav-R-Pac/Monster Energy Chevrolet dragster. She also set the track speed record at 335.57 mph.

Force, who was the No. 1 qualifier the last time NHRA competed at Maple Grove Raceway in 2019, was tied with Tony Schumacher (2005) for the most top qualifiers in a row in one season. Gary Beck holds the most Top Fuel No. 1s in a row with nine, set in the 1982-83 seasons.

Force, second in the playoff standings, fell in the semifinals when the dragster lost power with a cylinder out.

Enders, the winner at the U.S. Nationals a week earlier and the No. 1 qualifier in the Melling Performance/Elite Motorsports Camaro SS, defeated Rookie of the Year candidate Dallas Glenn, driving the RAD Torque Systems Camaro SS. Anderson, the No. 2 qualifier, beat Troy Coughlin Jr. in the JEGS.com Camaro SS on a holeshot in the semifinals.

Anderson, who expanded his championship points lead over Enders with the win, had recorded three runner-up finishes after the Atlanta victory in pursuit of Johnson’s mark. Anderson started in drag racing as a crew member and later crew chief for Johnson during four of his six Pro Stock championship seasons. John Force is the all-time NHRA leader with 154 victories.

“Great day to get the Hendrick Automotive Group their first win and more importantly Rick Hendrick; I don’t think he’s ever won a drag race Wally. Well, now he has,” Anderson said.

Round 2 of the Countdown to the Championship will be contested Sept. 17-19 at zMAX Dragway in Concord, North Carolina. FOX will telecast eliminations from the DeWalt NHRA Carolina Nationals live at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19.

An interview with Pro Stock winner GREG ANDERSON, KB RACING, HENDRICKCARS.COM CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 2 qualifier, 97th career victory in 164th final, surpassed 1,400 career elimination rounds, third win of season, points leader):

BECAUSE ERICA WAS IN THE OTHER LANE WAS IT MORE SPECIAL?
“It’s always special. She’s awesome; she does a great job behind the wheel of that race car, and she wins so many races on a holeshot. You’ve got to run your own game up there. You just have to forget who is in that other lane and you’re racing that Christmas Tree and that racetrack. If you do anything other than that, you’re just going to screw up. I was able to focus on that and do a good job in the final. It was my turn today. I guess it hadn’t been my turn. It’s been a tough run the last few races, but I haven’t been that far off. I just had to stick to my game and keep doing what I was doing. It feels pretty cool to make some history today. Obviously, I respect Warren Johnson; I learned a ton from him. That was my other life, this is a new life and we’re tied. It just feels fantastic.”

YOU GUYS OBVIOUSLY MADE ADJUSTMENTS AND MADE THE RIGHT ONES FOR THE FINAL ROUND.
“We made a great run first round and then slipped a little second round. Third round we got a little worse yet, so the boys had to make some big changes for the final round. We hit it on the nose. It’s so hard to win out here and the competition is so great, you just can’t make mistakes. We did not make one in the final and neither did the driver and that’s what it takes. I have a great new sponsor on the side of my race car. I believe this is his (Rick Hendrick) first drag race Wally. Pretty good day for me and the Hendrick Automotive Group.”

WHAT DID YOU FEEL LIKE WHEN YOU SAW THE WIN LIGHT?

“I was shocked. I was absolutely shocked. So many races in a row that that light did not come on. You think you’ve got everything going for you and everything is going swimmingly and the light just come on in the final round. There’s nothing better than when that light comes on in the final round of an NHRA national event. That’s what we look forward to; that’s why we do this. It’s everything to us. Huge day. To tie Warren Johnson for the wins record, that’s saying a lot. I have a lot of history with him. It’s a cool story. I’m going to my home track of Charlotte and I can’t think of a better place to break the record. You can’t break the record until you tie it and I just finally got it done today. Starting the playoffs on a high note. There are a lot of great cars in the class and anybody can win, but I think deep down we all know that Erica is going to be the one to beat, that you’re going to have to get around if you’re going to win the championship. She doesn’t make mistakes. I’m so proud of this team that I race for and I’m having a blast. I’m 60 years old and I’m having more fun than I’ve ever had in a race car.”

CHEVROLET FROM THE COCKPIT:

TOP FUEL:

BRITTANY FORCE, JOHN FORCE RACING, MONSTER ENERGY CHEVROLET DRAGSTER (No. 1 qualifier, fell in semifinals): “The first race of the Countdown is behind us and our Flav-R-Pac/Monster Energy team is in a better position than we were coming into this race. We picked up bonus points and made a semifinal round appearance. We kept our number two position and plan to step it up in Charlotte.”

FUNNY CAR:

JOHN FORCE, JOHN FORCE RACING, PEAK/BLUEDEF PLATINUM CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 11 qualifier, fell final): “Well, we got the points lead. That’s important. Danny Hood and Tim Fabrisi, they figured this PEAK Chevy our and really gave me a heck of a car today. The whole PEAK team, they worked hard, put things together and all I had to do was drive the car. It was fun today, the crowd, Maple Grove Raceway up here in Pennsylvania. Great way to start the Countdown. Now we get to do it all over again next weekend.”

ROBERT HIGHT, JOHN FORCE RACING, AUTOMOBILE CLUB OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 2 qualifier, fell semifinals to John Force): “It’s tough out there in Funny Car. I knew it was going to be. This Countdown is going to be a fight to the end. Not a bad weekend for this Auto Club Chevy team. We gained some points, went some rounds and made some consistent runs. That’s what we need – to be consistent, to be aggressive and make good runs. Luckily, we get a chance to keep up the momentum right away with the race in Charlotte next weekend.”

PRO STOCK:
TROY COUGHLIN JR., ELITE MOTORSPORTS, JEGS.COM CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 6 qualifier; fell in semifinals): “It turned out to be a great weekend. The guys had the JEGS.com Elite Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro running very strong and they certainly made the right adjustments for race day. The car was very fast. It’s a fun time of year with the Countdown underway and it always a good feeling when you’re able to move up the standings. My crew chief, Mark Ingersoll, along with Kyle Bates, Eric Luzinski, Kelly Murphy and Steven Hurley, they know what needs to be done to put us in a position to make a run at the title. This Elite team has been doing exactly that for years.”

KYLE KORETSKY, KB RACING, LUCAS OIL CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 5 qualifier; fell in quarterfinals): “It just shows that the KB guys give equal power to everybody out here that rents from there and they make some serious power. Everything felt good going down the track. I go to every single race looking to win, but I’m going to take every round one by one. It’s great to be home; I’ve got lots of friends and family here.”

JOSEF NEWGARDEN TOPS CHEVY CONTINGENT AT PORTLAND

PORTLAND (September 12,2021) – Two-time NTT INDYCAR Series champion Josef Newgarden battled from his 18th place starting position to finish fifth in today’s Grand Prix of Portland on the 12-turn, 1.964-mile Portland International Raceway that opened in 1961.

The top-five finish keeps Newgarden in championship contention leaving Oregon third in the standings, 34 points out of the lead with two races remaining in the season.

Pato O’Ward, No. 5 Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet, finished a disappointing 14th when ill-timed yellow flags jumbled strategies for everyone. O’Ward is in the thick of the championship hunt leaving Portland second in points, 25 behind race winner and points leader Alex Palou.

A multi-car crash in turn one, lap one jumbled the running order significantly that NTT INDYCAR officials had to carefully sort out prior to the restart. Fourth-place starter Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet driver Felix Rosenqvist was relegated to the back of the field with the other three starters from the front two rows of the field. With great strategy, Rosenqvist battled back to finish sixth.

Rookie-of-the-year contender Scott McLaughlin, No. 3 PPG Team Penske Chevrolet, finished ninth to give Chevrolet three of the top-nine finishers.

Alexander Rossi and Scott Dixon completed the podium.

Team Chevy drivers finished as follows:
5th – Josef Newgarden, No. 2 Hitachi Team Penske
6th – Felix Rosenqvist, No. 7 Arrow Mclaren Sp
9th – Scott McLaughlin, No. 3 PPG Team Penske
14th – Pato O’ward, No. 5 Arrow Mclaren Sp
16th – Conor Daly, No. 20 U.S. Air Force

25th – Callum Ilott, No. 77 Juncos Hollinger Racing
26th – Dalton Kellett, No. 4 K-Line Insulators AJ Foyt Racing

Team Chevy drivers in top—10 point standings:

3rd Josef Newgarden
8th Will Power
9th Simon Pagenaud

Next Sunday, September 19, 2021, the Chevrolet NTT INDYCAR teams and drivers head to the scenic Weathertech Laguna Seca Raceway, Monterey California.

DRIVER QUOTES:

FELIX ROSENQVIST, NO. 7 ARROW MCLAREN SP CHEVROLET, FINISHED 6TH: “Portland weekend is over and was eventful as always; especially in Turn 1, where we knew it was going to be crazy. We got unlucky at the start of the race when we avoided the collision that was about to happen in Turn 1. I didn’t really have a choice but to go straight. The way the rules are written, you get penalized if you go straight compared to the guys who stayed on the track. I couldn’t have really done anything so it was out of my hands, which is a shame. We were in third and came out 18th after the reorder.

The No. 7 Vuse Arrow McLaren SP team did a great job. We didn’t let that get us down, kept pushing, had really good pit stops, pit sequences, and the in and out laps were nailed every time. We kept getting ahead of cars each pit sequence and ended up with a sixth-place finish. I think we had a different kind of pace this weekend and it’s coming together more and more every weekend. Let’s ride out this wave and get some podiums the next two weeks.”

SCOTT MCLAUGHLIN, NO.3 PPG TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET, FINISHED 9TH: “Pretty good day for us in the PPG Chevy. I led my first INDYCAR races so that was pretty cool. I thought we might get in the top-three, but unfortunately a mid-race yellow put us behind the two-stoppers. Our strategy was pretty aggressive, potentially put us in the top-six or so, but made a couple of little errors that cost us on the out-lap. Getting better and better. Leading our first laps just shows our promise. Good points. We will keep pressing on to Laguna and Long Beach in the next couple of weeks.”

PATO O’WARD, NO. 5 ARROW MCLAREN SP CHEVROLET FINISHED 14TH: “Today was obviously very tough. It just wasn’t our day. We got unlucky with some of the yellows and this race favored the alternate strategy, which you can see when you look at the results. It just goes to show how exciting of a sport INDYCAR is at every race. We gave it everything we had all weekend. The No. 5 Arrow McLaren SP crew was solid on every stop. We are up against some great competitors for the championship but we will come back the next two races and fight down to the last lap in Long Beach.”

SEBASTIEN BOURDAIS (NO. 14 ROKIT CHEVROLET): “Obviously a bit of a sore day here for us at Portland International Raceway. Man, it looked like it was going to be a great day and after avoiding the chaos at the start and getting the lucky break with the reordering and getting fifth out of that, it seemed like we were going to do really good. Unfortunately, we were on the three-stopper with Pato and Ericsson and those guys and the yellows fell at exactly the wrong time for the three-stoppers like us and at the perfect time for the guys that suffered at the beginning of the race on the two-stopper and we could never recover from that. On top of that, we got tangled with Oliver Askew – more of my fault than his fault – and we were fighting with Veekay and he ended up just not quite giving me enough room to be able to make the lap. I was on the curb and just tapped the brakes when I saw him turn and just caught his left rear tire trying to get out of it. Just a shame we’re not getting much out of this weekend when we clearly had some pace, had a pretty decent qualifying and just a shame that we couldn’t transform the essay and we couldn’t get some good points again.”

DALTON Kellett, No. 4 K-Line Insulators USA AJ FOYT RACING, ChevroleT, FINISHED 26TH: “I’m so gutted for the No. 4 K-Line Insulators USA Chevy team. We were having a great race going and got a little lucky off the start with that melee and the way that the order was reshuffled. Gained some good positions and was able to hold on and be competitive. The pace felt strong compared to where we were in qualifying, so really happy with that. It’s just a shame how this race ended early for us. Looks like we had an electrical issue. We haven’t diagnosed that yet, still waiting for the car to come back. We’ll figure out what it was and make sure it doesn’t happen again. This has been a tough weekend with it kind of being up and down for qualifying, things like that. The race performance, was happy with that. That’s a positive we have to take out of this weekend and just diagnose the mechanical issue and go from there. ”

Fourth Place Finish for Meyer Shank Racing in Portland

#60: Jack Harvey, Meyer Shank Racing Honda

Harvey crowned biggest mover of the race after advancing 16 positions

Portland, OR (12 September 2021) – After making it through a chaotic start from the rear of the field, Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) Jack Harvey took the No. 60 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda to a fourth place finish in Sunday’s Grand Prix of Portland after starting 20th. The No. 06 of Helio Castroneves finished 23rd after sustaining damage from an opening turn incident.

A rollercoaster weekend at Portland International Raceway saw both Harvey and Castroneves set the second and third fastest lap times in practice early in the weekend, but struggle in qualifying with ninth and tenth row starting positions.

Turn 1 at Portland International, a corner that is notorious for producing interesting action at the start, proved to be no different this year. On Sunday, a melee of cars charged into Turn 1 causing two separate incidents, one unfortunately collecting Castroneves and beaching him on the Turn 2 curb.

Castroneves’ No. 06 car was lucky to have only suffered a broken steering arm, and the crew was able to replace it and send the Brazilian back out on track by lap 17. Although Castroneves’ fight for the win was put to the side, the No. 06 crew utilized the remaining 90 laps to make adjustments and test various setups.

Harvey – who was able to get through the Turn 1 chaos and stay on the racing line, quickly found himself within the top ten following the restart. Starting the 110 lap race on Firestone alternate tires, Harvey capitalized on the cooler temperatures and lower tire degradation to bring the No. 60 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda to the race lead by lap 37.

With several different fuel and tire strategies in play, Harvey was consistently racing in the top three overall. Harvey once again raced to the lead on lap 74 before making his second and final pit stop on lap 77.

Back-to-back caution periods slowed the final stint of the race as Harvey battled back up to the top five. With a 17 lap sprint to the finish, Harvey held onto fourth to earn his third consecutive top ten finish.

Meyer Shank Racing’s INDYCAR program will return to action next weekend when the series heads to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca for the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey.

Driver Quotes:

Jack Harvey:

“Obviously, we got a bit of help with all of the carnage in turn one. Before the race, we [the drivers] had a pretty clear question [to race control] as to what the rules were going to be if people had to go through the escape road and on the start I managed to stay on track and pick up a few positions there. But overall the strategy was great today. If we can combine the best bits of our weekend, then I think we’ve got a really competitive team and we can come and try and run at the front of the race. Obviously, I just want to get a good result for everyone at Meyer Shank Racing and AutoNation / SiriusXM and we’ve got two more races to try and get it done.”

Helio Castroneves:

“I saw somebody coming in like a torpedo at the start and the experienced guys started backing off, I don’t know who it was but came in and started hitting everybody. I guess the guy from the right side got hit, he hit me, I hit somebody on the left and bent the suspension. Short-lived but good news is we were able to get back out on track to make the most of the race. The SiriusXM / AutoNation car was pretty great around Portland. We used the session to keep it going, stick it out, and keep working on those little bugs. We tried a lot of things when we did the pit stop. Those things are preparation for us. It’s not what we wanted but we have to take it as it comes and hopefully, Laguna will be a better performance.”

Most reliable anti-theft device for your motorcycle

Photo by Jakub Sisulak on Unsplash

In the US alone, around 44 thousand motorcycles get stolen each year. However, new industry technologies have given thieves a run for their money, offering high-tech alarm systems and fail-proof digital anti-theft apps.

For years on end, motorcycle owners had to always be cautious about their vehicle safety. Always keeping one eye open for a possible burglary. Are there really weren’t any fool-proof devices to either help eliminate theft risk or help detect the whereabouts of a stolen bike. When you buy used motorcycles be careful to check everything out first.

Chain locks or even brake disc locks would often be used as a way to give any potential thief a hard time. However, with the right tools at play, a chain lock would be easy work for any burglar. Also, these anti-theft devices would be pretty out there and obvious to crack. Motorcycle owners would need something a bit more discrete and intelligent to outwit and outplay an experienced bike thieve.

Although tracking systems were always viewed as a possible weapon against theft, the odd-looking GPS trackers bought from a random web listing aren’t that reliable. They can usually be easily spotted and hard to hide. Also, these devices would have a pretty cheap battery and in general, lack any intelligent and smart features.

Thankfully, the digital age has turned a new page, and innovative tech companies have come out with a solid solution for motorcycle owners. By revamping old-school GPS technology and combining it with high-tech in-app functionalities bike owners around the globe can now get a hold of a GPS motorcycles tracker

Want to know how these trackers perform and save against theft? Keep reading to find out their main features.

Hide it anywhere

These innovative and easy-to-use GPS trackers can be easily hidden anywhere on/in your motorcycle. You’d usually see GPS devices that require wiring and could only have a limited amount of places to hide. Clever thieves would know these main hiding places and would be able to remove GPS devices. Thus a wireless option is a real industry game-changer.

The durable and lightweight solution makes for the perfect hidden alarm system. No help or assistance is needed.

Control by smartphone

But it doesn’t stop there, by syncing the tracker with your smartphone you’ll be able to track the whereabouts of your motorcycles and even receive a dedicated phone call if the GPS senses movement without any key fob nearby. This makes theft alerts faster, wherever the owner may be.

Easy to set up with a smartphone and use to track any motorcycle, new or old. The app also de-alarms itself when it can detect that a key fob is nearby (included in the GPS tracker set). Which also prevents any accidental and unnecessary alarm system breakouts.

Battery longevity

These GPS trackers are made to last and help the owner in case of a burglary. The tracker is powered by batteries that can last for up to 12 months. Little maintenance is needed to extend the longevity of a motorcycle tracker.

With this simple device, any motorcycle owner can feel more confident in riding and parking their bike. No need to worry about guarded or in-door parking. Also, owners won’t be needing old-fashioned security tools like chain locks to prevent possible theft. State-of-the-art GPS trackers make for easy maintenance, a fool-proof anti-theft guarantee, and no more stress over motorcycle robbery.

An easy and relatively cheap way to prevent any motorcycle owner’s worst nightmare.

5 Daily Habits That Will Make You Better at Racing

When you’re training, you are always pushing yourself to hit that next level. There is a desire to keep doing better, to out-perform yourself, and reach all your goals. For runners, it can be tricky to keep up this level of intensity and performance improvements, since it’s quite normal to hit a plateau. Getting stuck on a plateau is frustrating and can chip away at your motivation.

That is exactly why these five daily habits will prove to be so useful. Each of them can help you to be better at racing and help you to achieve your personal fitness goals.

Introduce Into Your Routine Strength Training

If you haven’t yet introduced strength training into your routine, it’s time to do so. Runners are often focused on the cardio side of things, but strength training can also play a pivotal role in your training. Embrace exercises like planks, squats, lunges, and pushups to get started. This will build your core muscle and strength which, in turn, will help you to be a better racer.

Eat a Healthy Well-Balanced Diet

To be your best, you also need to fuel your body with the vitamins and nutrients it needs, which requires eating a healthy well-balanced diet. Although it can be tempting to head out to a restaurant to eat, get takeout or choose a pre-packaged frozen meal, those aren’t the healthiest decisions.

If you’re the type that opts for takeout due to the convenience factor, this is a great time to embrace meal planning and advanced meal preparation. There are several compact food storage options that allow you to prepare ingredients in advance or even the full meal and then store it in the fridge until you’re ready to eat it. The proper storage solution will ensure the items are kept fresh and tasting great.

Speaking of a healthy well-balanced diet, be sure that you are drinking plenty of water. If you allow yourself to become dehydrated, it will negatively impact your performance.

Learn the Right Time of Day/Night for Your Training

Did you know that everyone is different in terms of what their best time of the day is for training? Some people respond well to early morning workouts and runs, whereas others do better in the evenings. It’s important to figure out what your best time of day is, be honest with yourself, and then plan accordingly.

Are You Getting Enough Sleep?

When you think about racing better, there’s no doubt you think about training harder and more often, but what about sleep? Did you know that adequate sleep is just as important to your performance level? Ideally, you want to aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each night. This gives your body a chance to recover from your workouts and runs. The less sleep you get, the longer it will take for your body to recover and make the necessary repairs.

Do You Have the Right Type of Shoes?

Although there is no such thing as magical shoes that will miraculously make you a better runner, there are differences worth noting. They can affect your comfort and performance even in a small way. If your shoes are old, no longer have good support, don’t fit well or don’t have ample support and cushioning, it’s time to invest in new ones. This is an item worth shopping around for, so make sure you get a quality pair.

By following these tips and being mindful of the small changes you can make, it won’t be long until you get better at racing.
