The Data on Dollar:

  • Drew Dollar will make his fifth career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start behind the wheel of the No. 51 Tundra in Thursday’s 200-lap event at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway as part of an eight-race schedule with Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) in 2021. Sunbelt Rentals, the premiere rental company in North America, will serve as the primary sponsor on Dollar’s Tundra Friday and for two more races this season. After Thursday’s event, the remaining three races on Dollar’s schedule in the No. 51 Tundra this season are Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway (Sept. 24), Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway (Oct. 2) and the series finale at Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway (Nov. 5).
  • Dollar has recorded an average finish of 21.8 across the first four starts of his Camping World Truck Series career. His best result was a 10th-place finish in his series debut at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in February.
  • Bristol will be the third and final race in the Round of 10 in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series owner’s playoffs. The No. 51 team qualified for the owner’s portion of the playoffs by finishing the regular season ranked fifth in the point standings. Heading into the final race of the round, they sit 10th on the owner’s playoff grid with 2017 points, 21 points below the cutoff line for advancing to the Round of 8.
  • In addition to his part-time schedule with KBM in the Truck Series, Dollar is competing in a limited schedule in the ARCA Menards Series this season with Venturini Motorsports. Despite competing in only 10 of the 17 races, the 20-year-old driver ranks seventh in the championship standings behind the strength of an average finish of 7.7 across his 10 starts this year. He will be pulling double duty on Thursday night, piloting the No. 20 Camry for Venturini in the 200-lap ARCA Menards Series race at 6:30 p.m. before the 9 p.m. Truck Series race.
  • The Toyota Racing Development driver finished fourth in the ARCA Menards Series championship standings in 2020 after recording one win, four top-five and 14 top-10 finishes across 20 starts. Dollar led 40 laps en route to his lone series victory at Talladega Superspeedway last June. He also finished inside the top 10 in both of his ARCA Menards Series starts in 2019, including a sixth-place finish in his series debut at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway.
  • Mardy Lindley is in his first season as a crew chief at KBM. Before arriving at KBM, Lindley guided his drivers to 32 wins and four ARCA Menards Series East championships since 2013, including back-to-back titles with Sam Mayer the last two seasons. Additionally, he earned the ARCA Menards Series Sioux Chief Showdown championship with Mayer in 2020.   • The No. 51 team has won three times this season, including earlier this season on the Bristol Motor Speedway dirt track with Martin Truex Jr. KBM owner-driver Kyle Busch collected victories at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, Ga., and Kansas Speedway in Kansas City. Lindley’s drivers have scored five victories on the Bristol pavement. Sam Mayer won the ARCA Menards Series event at the half-mile oval in 2020 and in the ARCA Menards Series East, he won two races with Mayer in 2019 and one each with Dylan Kwasniewski (2013), Harrison Burton (2017). He also won the inaugural race on the Bristol Motor Speedway dirt track with Truex Jr. earlier this season.

Drew Dollar, Driver Q&A:

What can you take away from your first four Truck Series race that will help you as you head into your last four races of the season?
“The first four races are definitely I can learn a lot from. Just getting laps in the truck is something that is going to be very beneficial for these next four races I have. Already knowing what to expect in the trucks, now just going to these tracks that I may or may not have seen before is going to be fun. Having some experience in the trucks and working with the team now my confidence is a lot higher and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Without having truck practice at Bristol, will running the ARCA Menards Series race Thursday be beneficial to you?
“Getting some laps in the Sunbelt Camry before I go and hop in the Sunbelt Rentals Toyota Tundra will be very beneficial to me to already have some laps on the track. I’ll just have to change up what I’m doing when I get in the Tundra. I’m excited for it, Bristol is definitely one of my favorite tracks.”

What is it going to take to have a solid finish at Bristol on Thursday?
“I know we are definitely going to unload with a really fast Toyota Tundra at Bristol. It’s going to be my job to get up to speed quickly. I’ve had sim time already and feel good about it. I’ve been watching film and everything, so it’s just going to be my job to make sure we keep our Tundra out front.”

Dollar was scheduled to race it at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway in May but had to go to a backup truck after an incident in practice. Raphael Lessard finished fourth with KBM-59 in its most recent outing last October at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth. The chassis best result was a third-place finish with Chandler Smith in November of 2019 at Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway.

Defending NASCAR Truck Series Champion to Compete Fulltime for RCR

WELCOME, NC (September 14, 2021) – Richard Childress Racing announced today that Sheldon Creed will join the organization’s NASCAR Xfinity Series stable in 2022. Creed will compete for RCR’s Championship-winning Xfinity Series program on a fulltime basis, beginning with the 2022 season-opener at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, February 19.

Creed currently races for GMS Racing under the Drivers Edge Development Program presented by Chevrolet and has quickly become an accomplished driver with a resume that includes the 2020 NASCAR Truck Series Championship and 2018 ARCA Racing Series Championship.

“Sheldon has proved himself as a talented driver during his short NASCAR Career and we know that he will help contribute to RCR’s competitive NASCAR Xfinity Series program with his drive to succeed,” said Richard Childress, Chairman and CEO of RCR. “I am looking forward to watching his career continue to develop as a RCR driver and feel confident that he will represent RCR well both on and off the track.”

He joins an impressive list of drivers who have competed and won in the NASCAR Xfinity Series under the Richard Childress Racing banner, including Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer, Austin Dillon, Ty Dillon and Tyler Reddick, among others.

Featured events during the Goodguys weekend include the Goodguys Autocross Series (featuring a 16-car “Big Hoss Shootout”, Nitro Thunderfest dragster exhibition, burnout competition, Summit Super Shopping Experience and Swap Meet and Cars 4 Sale Corral.

Bridget Excels Early at ARCA Portland Road Course Race

TOOELE, UT, September 13, 2021 – The HMH Construction Chevrolet SS was loaded up for the 6th race of the ARCA Menards West Series, this time for a road course race at Portland International Raceway, held in conjunction with the Indy Car Series.

The action-packed weekend kicked off Friday with two practice sessions for the ARCA teams. Bridget quickly got a good feel for the track and was able to work with the team on getting the setup just right for the race on Saturday.

The race was being held on the 20-year anniversary of 9/11; First Responders, Race Officials, Indy Car Teams and ARCA Teams came together to remember those that had tragically lost their lives on that day 20 years ago. Although being from Australia, it was an honor as well as humbling for the BMI Racing team to have the opportunity to take part and show their respect in the commemorative ceremony.

The 30-minute qualifying session started mid-morning, and Bridget elected to head out on track as soon as the session started. Teams were required to qualify on the tires they would use to start the race, meaning drivers would only have 2 – 3 laps to get their best time. Bridget and the HMH Construction Chevrolet would start from 10th.

The green flag dropped at Portland International Raceway for the start of the Portland 112 and there was no shortage of action. Bridget worked hard avoiding issues on the track, climbing her way up to 4th place during the first half of the race – this being her highest career racing position.

The halfway break came at lap 29 and the field rolled down pit road, the team went to work on Bridget’s car changing four tires, adding Sunoco fuel and a wedge adjustment. Bridget continued to persevere, with the second half of the race having just as much action as the first half. At the five-lap to go mark Bridget avoided another car that had spun on track, but in turn, it had ultimately ended her race early, finishing in 16th position.

A replay of the Portland 112 at Portland International Raceway will broadcast on NBCSN on Saturday, Sept. 18, starting at 9 p.m. PT / 12 a.m. ET.

Bridget’s next race will be Thursday, Sept. 23, for the Star Nursery 150 at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Mr. Smith Goes to the Last Great Colosseum:

  • Chandler Smith and the No. 18 JBL team head to Bristol Motor Speedway for the final race in the Round of 10 of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series playoffs sitting 12 points below the cutoff line for advancing to the Round of 8. Smith rebounded from a disappointing 28th-place finish in the opening race of the playoffs at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway with a solid day at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. He was able to score points in each of the opening stages, including a runner-up finish in Stage Two, and ended the day with a seventh-place finish and 42 points scored. Unfortunately for Smith, eight of the nine top point scorers at Darlington were also playoff contenders and he was only able to cut his deficit below the cutoff line from 18 after Gateway to 12 heading to Bristol.
  • The talented teenager has found success at “The Last Great Colosseum” early on in his Camping World Truck Series career. As a 17-year-old, making just his third-career Truck Series start in 2019, Smith challenged for the win before finishing second to eventual series champion Brett Moffitt. Last year, Smith went a lap down early in the race, but was able to recover and earn a fifth-place finish. He also has one ARCA Menards Series start at Bristol but was relegated to a 23rd-place finish after experiencing a mechanical.
  • Smith finished the regular season 10th on the Camping World Truck Series playoff grid, 10 points above the cutoff line for qualifying for the post season, after posting three top-five and five top-10 finishes across 15 races. Smith and fellow Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender Carson Hocevar are the only two drivers who are competing for a driver’s championship for the first time. The other eight contenders have all competed for the Truck Series championship at least one time in previous seasons.
  • The 19-year-old driver ranks third among full-time Camping World Truck Series competitors with 169 laps led this season.
  • Smith picked up a victory in the CARS Super Late Model Tour event at Tri-County Motor Speedway in Granite Falls, N.C., on Saturday, Sept. 11. It was his second Super Late Model victory of the year driving for Donnie Wilson Motorsports. He also was victorious at 5 Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Fla. on July 24.
  • The Toyota Racing Development driver has 11 top-five, and 15 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 15.4 across 33 career Camping World Truck Series starts. His runner-up finish at Knoxville Raceway earlier this season equaled the career-best finish he achieved at Bristol in 2019.
  • Veteran crew chief Danny Stockman calls the shots for Smith and the No. 18 team this season. Stockman led the No. 51 team to four wins in his first season atop the pit box at KBM in 2020. He came to the organization with experience as a crew chief in all three national series, including a Truck Series championship with Austin Dillon in 2011 and an Xfinity Series championship with Dillon in 2013. Stockman’s Truck Series drivers have three starts at Darlington, with Smith’s fifth-place finish last year being the best result. In Xfinity Series action, his best result across 13 starts is a pair of third-place finishes, first with Dillon in 2013 and again with Daniel Hemric in 2018.
  • Safelite AutoGlass – the nation’s largest provider of vehicle glass repair, replacement, and recalibration services – will serve as the primary sponsor on Smith’s Tundra at Bristol and for 16 races total this season. Smith General Contracting and, QuickTie – a proprietary, patented hold down system for high wind and seismic construction- will be associate partners on the bedtop of the No. 18 Toyota for Thursday’s 200-lap event.

Do you enjoy racing at Bristol?
“It’s a short track that has a lot of banking and it has my name written all over it! I love Bristol. Growing up as a kid I always dreamed of racing there and the first time I ever got to race there with KBM was amazing, especially being in the Camping World Truck Series. Overall, I’m really excited about going there and I think our luck will hopefully turn around and we’ll bring the Safelite Tundra home in one piece.”

With being 12 points below the cutoff line for advancing to the Round of 8, how will you approach Thursday’s race?
“The biggest thing for us is surviving and honestly trying to win the race. That’s all we can really do is run our own race and if we are really good, we should be able to win the race and if not maximize all of our points and do the best we can. If we come up a little short, it is what it is, and we’ll know that we gave it our best. You can only control the things that you can control, you can control others. Hopefully we can just go out there and get the win though. That’s what we are looking forward to.”

You’ve been running more Super Late Model races lately and have won a couple of them. Does that help you when you get in a truck?
“I think it’s confidence honestly. At the start of the year, we were okay in the trucks, and it steadily started going downhill, downhill, downhill. I wasn’t doing much Super Late Model racing at that time, so my confidence as a driver may have been a little bit down just because you hear things, hear people start saying stuff and you kind of start second guessing yourself and your ability to drive. Being able to hop in a Super Late Model and be really strong every weekend I hop in one and picking up a few wins this year definitely boosted my confidence back up. So, it definitely helps me as far as my confidence.”

Two wins, 3 fastest laps, pole in EFO outing

SPIELBERG, Austria – (12 September 2021) – Red Bull Junior team driver Jak Crawford scored an emotional victory for the Stars and Stripes on 9-11 Saturday, leading all the way to win the opening Euroformula Open race at Red Bull Ring.

After finishing fifth in the morning round with an inverted grid, the 16-year-old Texan finished the weekend by leading all the way in winning Sunday’s final race. He won his fourth pole in as many attempts in addition to running the fastest race lap in all three events, and made three podium visits, including being the top rookie in the second race.

“This was a good one for America,” Crawford said from victory circle after his Saturday triumph. “Obviously, 20 years ago was a tragic event, so this was a good one for my country, and for myself as well.”

“It was quite a good weekend, obviously,” Crawford summed up. “Two race wins, the pole and three fastest race laps is pretty good. I’m happy with the weekend. We had the best speed, and the most points as well.”

Crawford showed why Red Bull Ring is one of his favorite tracks from the beginning of the weekend. He dominated Friday’s practice, only to lose fast time in the closing minutes by 0.358-seconds. In Saturday morning’s qualifying, he set fast time several times, only to be knocked off the pole three times. But each time he came back with an even faster lap, finally capturing pole position with a lap of 1:22.093-seconds.

“I’m happy to be on pole,” Crawford said after qualifying. “It wasn’t easy; times are always really close at the Red Bull Ring since there aren’t that many corners.I made a mistake on my last lap, which I probably could have had another tenth or so. But still happy with the pole.”

The opening race saw Crawford get off to a 0.9-second lead on lap one, eventually building up to a whopping 6.911-second gap on the field.

“Race 1 was pretty dominant It was an easier one today, because I didn’t have much pressure, but I’m excited about the victory.”

The top six finishers were inverted for Sunday morning’s second race, putting Crawford sixth on the grid. He gained two positions on the opening lap with a pair of passes, and then bided his time in fourth – setting the fastest lap of the race on lap 11. He slipped up and lost two positions on lap 14, although he gained one back on the following lap and finished fifth.

“Race 2 was a bit unfortunate, because I had a few incidents,” he said. “It was a difficult one, being very difficult to overtake. I got up to fourth and held that position, but then I got attacked from behind while being stuck behind a train of cars in front of me. We had the speed to win – and got the fastest lap – but it was difficult to overtake.”

Sunday afternoon was a repeat of race one. Crawford started on the pole by virtue of setting the fastest lap in race two. He led by 1.2-seconds after the opening lap, set fastest race lap four times and gapped Team Motopark teammate and point leader Cameron Das by 4.602-seconds.

“It was a fun race,” Crawford said. “I had a good start and they were battling behind me, so I got a quite comfortable lead. After that, I was trying to be as consistent as possible with no mistakes while managing the gap. Quite an easy one. I’m happy with the win, and the points as well.”

Crawford managed to gain ground with the solid weekend to gain on the leaders from third position. However, he will miss the penultimate round of the campaign at Monza due to an FIA Formula 3 conflict with the new season finale at Sochi in Russia.

“I’m not going to race Monza, which is a bit unfortunate,” he said. “I think the championship is a bit out of reach unless something crazy happens. But we do get to race in Sochi, which will be the first time for me – the first time for nearly everyone. So the playing ground will be a bit more even, and I’m looking forward to another good weekend like Zandvoort, with all three races in the points.”

The Euroformula Open season ends at Barcelona on Oct. 22-24.

“I’ve driven there quite a bit, and it’s one of my favorite tracks in the world,” Crawford said. “I’m looking to get some good results there.”

● Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway is the cutoff race in the first round of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. Almirola currently sits 11th with three points ahead of the cutoff line to advance to the Round of 12. The Smithfield driver was in a similar position heading into last year’s playoff cutoff race at Bristol – 10th place, seven points ahead of the cutoff line.
● Almirola is no stranger to pressure when it comes to the cutoff line. In 2018, he advanced to the Round of 12 by one point at the Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway “Roval” road course. How did you feel about Richmond and how does it change your outlook on Bristol?

“We didn’t have a race-winning car, but I thought we could have run fifth to eighth, so I was a little frustrated. But it’s a team sport and we’ll go to Bristol and keep fighting. I think we’re competitive. We’re in the hunt. We had a loose lugnut and I had to pit again under green, and that got us behind. We finished 14th instead of sixth or seventh, which is about where we were running, so frustrating that we gave up those points. In this situation, we can’t really give up any points. It would have been a lot nicer to go to Bristol plus 12 (points) instead of plus three, but it is what it is. It’s no big deal. We’ve got to put our head down and go race. It’s the same situation. We’ve just got to go racing and score as many points as we can.”

Do you think the driving will be more aggressive this weekend with the points situation so close?

“The playoffs always bring out the best in us. The intensity level ratchets way up and every spot matters, every point matters during the stages and every finishing position matters, so I don’t think it can get any more aggressive. It’s already really aggressive and it will continue to be that way. We were in a similar position last year ahead of the cutoff line and we just didn’t execute in the first stage enough to get us points, so we have to get those points early. But you see what happened at Darlington with cars and equipment taking them out of the race. You have to be there at the end, too, so there is a fine balance.”

Is it a new mindset when you return to Bristol’s concrete surface after racing on the dirt?

“Bristol on dirt does not correlate at all to Bristol’s typical concrete self. One thing that I am interested in is the fact that they completely had to wash the racetrack and I believe, or I’ve heard, they had to spray a solution on there to get all of the clay and stuff off and pressure wash the racetrack, so it’ll be interesting to see how different the track is just without the rubber that’s laid down in the pores of the concrete and if that changes anything – then how they apply the PJ1 to the bottom groove. That’s always a moving target for us on whether they apply it in a small strip or if they widen it out and make it to where it’s a whole car width wide. It’s always changing the dynamic of how the cars run around the racetrack.”
