ERIK JONES, NO. 43 BLACK ENTREPRENEUR INITIATIVE CAMARO ZL1 1LE, Teleconference Transcript:

YOU HAVE SOME EXCITING SPONSORSHIP NEWS FOR YOUR TEAM. CAN YOU GIVE US A QUICK OVERVIEW OF THAT, ALONG WITH YOUR THOUGHTS LEADING INTO KANSAS THIS WEEKEND?”
“We are partnering up with The Lonely Entrepreneur for three races. The first is this weekend in Kansas and then on to COTA and Nashville, as well. So, it’s a pretty cool company. I’m learning more about them and what they really are. But they provide resources to entrepreneurs who are trying to get their footing in the business world and helping them out; and we’re also really spotlighting black entrepreneurs as well, which is going to be a cool program and one that I’m excited to work with and have learned a lot about here in the last, really, just a few days. So, it’s been cool to learn more about it and get to know them a little bit.”

WHAT WAS GOING THROUGH YOUR HEAD AT TALLADEGA WHEN YOU WERE LEADING THE FIELD?
“Well, I was hoping it was going to stay green. I thought that was our best shot to try to win. Unfortunately, we had that yellow come out. But, just trying to defend the line and what was coming and just trying to keep that lead. So, I was just happy though to get up front and lead some laps with the Air Force on the car. That was our first race this year, so it was cool to get them up front. Obviously, I wish we could have closed the race out a little bit better. But overall, I thought it was a good race for us.”

IT WAS A STRONG WEEKEND FOR YOU BUT THE FINAL RESULT DIDN’T REFLECT THE GREAT DAY YOU HAD. WHAT DO YOU TELL YOU TEAM AFTER A ROUGH FINISH LIKE THAT?
“Well, I think you just have to keep your head up and know that we did bring a fast car; one that was quick enough to win the race obviously. We were up front and leading laps. You’ve got to take it with a grain of salt. It’s Talladega and that’s how things go there sometimes but I definitely just want to keep those guys motivated and inspired and I think they’ve been doing a really good job and giving me some good cars. So, things come together. We’ve just got to keep doing what we’ve been doing, really; and wait for the rest to kind of fall into place for us.”

TEN RACES INTO YOUR RPM TENURE ON VERY UNIQUE TRACKS ON THIS SCHEDULE. WHAT ARE YOUR IMPRESSIONS OF RPM AND WHAT CAN YOU GUYS BE DOING BETTER AT THIS POINT?
“I think it’s been good. I think overall we just want to consistently improve each week and still find our footing. We are getting better and better. With no practice it takes time to get to know each other and figure out what we need out of the race car and how we’ve got to go through the weekend. But I think we’ve been doing a good job and I think RPM does a good job. They’ve got good equipment and we just have to take advantage of what we have. We don’t have the same number of people as a lot of these bigger teams, but I think we’ve got really people in the people that we do have. So, we’re just doing what we can to take advantage of that and making the most of every week.”

DO YOU HAVE ANY RACES YOU FEEL LIKE YOUR TEAM SHOULD FOCUS ON AS FAR AS TRYING TO GET A WIN TO MAKE THE PLAYOFFS?
“Yeah, Talladega was one of those races that we wanted to try to win. I thought we had a good plan and did have a shot. But moving forward, with Daytona coming up and obviously the season finale a little way out; but Darlington is in a couple of weeks and is a great race track for me. I won there a couple of years ago so we’re really putting a lot of weight on that one. So, that’s probably the next one on the schedule, I would say, is Darlington; that we’ve got to focus hard on and hope we can take advantage of that place.”

TEN RACES IN, IS THERE ANYTHING THAT YOU’VE FOUND TO BE MORE OF A CHALLENGE THAN YOU ANTICIPATED?
“Well, I think just no practice has been more of a challenge. Last year, I didn’t really think much of it, but I’d also been with that organization for a few years with the same crew chief. So, we had a lot of notes. We’re kind of going in a little bit blind this year with a new team and a new crew chief and a new car and a new manufacturer. Everything is a lot different. So, having no notes has made the no practice just stand out more for me this year over last year.”

GIVEN WHAT YOU JUST SAID, HAVE YOU HAD TO TEMPER EXPECTATIONS THIS YEAR?
“I don’t think so. I think we just go out every week with the hope to run a Top 10. We’ve done that a few times. I think we are probably capable of doing it a few more; we just didn’t have things really work out for us. So, I think we’ve kept our expectations pretty similar to what we began the year with. And that’s just going out and trying to obviously, get those Top 10’s and take advantage of the places we know we can go up front and try to win at.”

WE ARE GOING TO DARLINGTON THIS YEAR WITH THE HIGH HORSEPOWER PACKAGE. WHAT DO YOU THINK THAT WILL DO FOR THE RACING AND DO YOU THINK THAT PACKAGE WILL BE BETTER SUITED FOR DARLINGTON?
“Yeah, I think so. It’s been a few years now since we’ve ran it, but I was trying to look back through my mental notes of what the track was like last time we ran the low downforce package there. I thought the racing was good both ways; but I think the low downforce is going to be fun. As a driver, it’s definitely a challenge there with how slick and worn out that place is. So, I’m excited to get there and to give it a shot again. We were on the simulator today doing some laps and just kind of getting reacquainted with it and it was fun. I always like Darlington. We ran good there with the low downforce package. We were Top 5 I think, in all those races; so hopefully we can keep that trend going.”

ARE YOU HAPPY WITH THE DIRECTION AND PROGRESS YOU ARE SEEING AT RPM SINCE YOU’VE BEEN THERE AND WHERE YOU GUYS ARE HEADED IN THE LONG RUN?
“Yeah, I’ve been happy with how it’s been going, I think. Jerry (Baxter, crew chief) have worked well together and what we’ve done this year has been good. So, I think we’re making gains and doing the right things we need to do to keep getting the cars better and keep getting the team better. It’s not a fast process. You’re trying to get a lot of different gears moving along in different directions, but overall, I’ve been pretty happy with the progress we’ve been making.”

YOU SEEM TO HAVE A LOT OF SPEED ON THE SUPERSPEEDWAYS AND SOME OF THE LARGER TRACKS. WHAT TYPE OF ADJUSTMENTS DO YOU THINK YOUR TEAM NEEDS TO MAKE SO YOU CAN HAVE THAT SAME SPEED ON SOME OF THE SHORTER TRACKS?
“Yeah, I mean the draft is kind of a great equalizer. Obviously, I thought we brought a good superspeedway car but you’ve always kind of got a shot to go up and contend there, no matter what you do. But you know, it’s just more development on the intermediate side of things. We’ve got obviously some different kinds of cars that we run at different 1.5-miles, from Atlanta to Vegas. We struggled at Atlanta but ran really well at Vegas. But those were two totally different cars. So, I think we’ve changed our mindset a little bit on some of those tracks. And, going into Kansas this weekend, we’re running a car real similar to what we had at Las Vegas, so I think that’ll be pretty good. But just learning and trying to get a notebook together for what works and what doesn’t. I think we’ve done a good job of that and I think it’s going to start to show here as we start to go back to more of these 1.5-mile tracks.”

“I’m excited to get rolling again. I think we’re starting inside the top 10 so that’ll help a bit. Hopefully we can get clean air sooner rather than later and I’m looking forward to the track moving around like it usually does at Kansas. If it does we can move up and use all the lanes and try to move to the front of the field. My team continues to improve this year, so hopefully we made adjustments from the last 1.5-mile track and can go race for a win.”

I had a few stage wins there last year and had a shot at winning all three races, it just didn’t work out for us at the end. I haven’t raced there at night yet, so I’m looking forward to that. It should be a good weekend for the 21 team.”

We’re ready to finish in the top five hopefully, but the goal is always to battle for the win. “I’m excited to get back to Kansas. I love Kansas as the speedway itself and I’ve always had a blast there, but just not the best of luck. We’ve always had speed and great performance, but we just need to get this monkey off our back. After a great run at Richmond the team has great morale heading into this weekend and we’re just ready to really go back out there and crush it.”

Ford Performance NASCAR: Michael McDowell Ford Zoom Transcript

Ford Performance Notes and Quotes
NASCAR Cup Series
Ford Zoom Media Availability | Tuesday, April 27, 2021

Michael McDowell, driver of the No. 34 CarParts.com Ford Mustang in the NASCAR Cup Series for Front Row Motorsports, is coming off a third-place finish in Sunday’s race at Talladega Superspeedway.  He spoke about that run and his season to date as part of the weekly Ford Zoom call with members of the media.

MICHAEL MCDOWELL, No. 34 CarParts.com Ford Mustang YOU ANNOUNCED A DEAL WITH CARPARTS.COM YESTERDAY.  CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THAT?  “It was a lot of fun.  I’m thankful to CarParts.com and their partnership.  It started last year during the pandemic when we didn’t have fans at the racetrack and we didn’t really know when we were gonna be racing and how it was gonna look, and they came on board anyways and believed in us.  So, it’s been a fun partnership to work with them.  We did a handful of races with them last year and again this year coming up, so I’m excited about Kansas and getting CarParts.com back on the car.  The TV commercial was a lot of fun.  We’ve been doing these little skits and putting out some YouTube clips the last 12 months, but to finally get something fully produced and to have a national TV ad campaign going with my ugly mug in it is a lot of fun.  When we do our different things at the shop we’re not using actors.  I’ve got my crew guys there and they’re on the sets with us and doing the different videos.  We’re a one-stop shop at Front Row Motorsports.  We provide all the entertainment you need.”

HOW DO YOU MANAGE EXPECTATIONS NOW OR RESET YOUR GOALS?  “I think having realistic goals is important because this sport is so up and down that if you’re not achieving something or you don’t feel like you’re accomplishing anything, you can be miserable.  That’s not a good setting in the shop and at the racetrack and with your team, so we do feel good about what we’ve done this year and what we’ve been able to accomplish, but we don’t want to stop there either.  We’ve got to keep pushing and so we know the racetracks where we have a good shot at it and have an opportunity and, fortunately, this year with this schedule, there’s more than ever.  We have more road courses coming up, getting to go to some new road courses, getting to go back to Watkins Glen, which has been a strong track for us.  So, there’s definitely more for us to accomplish.  I think going into this season the number one goal was to win a race, which we were able to do, and beyond that is more top fives and more top 10s than we had last year, and to continue to grow those numbers because it’s not just about stats, it’s about when you’re in the top five and the top 10 you’re achieving a lot as a team.  You get some of those Bristol races or maybe a Martinsville, where 15 guys fall out — those are gimmees and we’ll take them every day, but it’s more running consistently in that top 15 and having a shot at legitimately being there every weekend, so we just keep pushing forward.  We’re enjoying it, too.  We’re not getting crazy and thinking, ‘Man, we’re gonna go win every weekend.’  We  know where we’re at and we know what we have to do and we know what we still have to build upon, but we’re just trying to execute and get the most that we can every weekend.”

IS THERE A REAL DIFFERENCE IN THE WAY THE TEAM IS OPERATING NOW?  IS THERE A LITTLE PEP IN THE STEP WITH EVERYBODY?  “Definitely, and I think it wasn’t just this year, it’s the end of last year as well.  We were having good results and running well, so we all felt like we could do it, but this sport in particular, momentum is a big thing and confidence is a big thing.  I don’t want to say that we weren’t confident because we were.  We believed in what we were doing and felt like we had a good thing going, but it just starts to build and build when you get results, so you have a little bit more swagger at the shop and everybody is pumped up and excited.  And I think it’s the little details and that’s what our sport is all about.  It’s all about people and it’s all about details and those guys are willing to stay that extra 10 or 20 minutes to get it just right, or they’re willing to cut it back off and do it another time because they feel like if we can get a little bit more that it’ll pay off on the racetrack.  When you have results and confidence and morale, people are willing to go that extra mile and work a little bit harder — not that they weren’t working hard before, but you just have more to give and I think that’s what you see.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE COTA ROAD COURSE?  HAVE YOU SEEN THE F1 RACES THERE?  “Definitely excited.  To answer your question, I definitely watch the Formula One races and the sports cars have raced there as well and Indy Cars, but it’s a track I haven’t raced at.  I got the opportunity to go there last week at the Skip Barber Driving School in a Ford Mustang and finally get an opportunity to see the racetrack.  I’ve been on the simulator and played it on iRacing, but to get there and to see it.  It’s a magnificent facility, a really fun racetrack, a lot of elevation changes, great passing zones.  I’m definitely excited that we have the opportunity to race there this year and, to be honest, I’m thankful that we have a practice session too, just so we can sort out our cars on that particular racetrack and kind of learn some of the nuances, but an amazing facility and excited to get rolling there.”

DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE SOME ADVANTAGE WITH ELKHART LAKE CONSIDERING YOUR EXPERIENCE THERE?  “I use the term advantage loosely in the Cup Series because being a road racer I thought that that was an advantage, but the guys are so good and the teams are so good I wouldn’t call it an advantage, but I think I’m at less of a disadvantage going to Road America, just having a lot of seat time there and having some success.  Being in good cars, too.  I think that’s probably the biggest difference is I’ve been in a Gibbs car there and I’ve been in an RCR car there, so I have a good feel in good equipment of what that should be like, so I think that helps and that translates with that feel, so I’m looking forward to going to Road America.  It’s my favorite racetrack.  It was well before I got into the NASCAR Series.  It’s just a great facility, an amazing, challenging, aggressive, man’s man of all road courses — Road America is it.  You’ve got to be brave, you’ve got to be calculated, you’ve got to be precise.  It’s one of the greatest racetracks in the world.”

MISSING FROM YOUR COMMERCIAL WAS DREW BLICKENSDERFER.  DOES HE GET ENOUGH TV TIME ON RACE HUB THAT HE DOESN’T GET ANY MORE?  “You all know that Drew is the star of this race team.  He wasn’t there for the commercial shoot, but he definitely gets enough TV time and he does a great job.”

CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE CONFIDENCE YOU GAINED AFTER YOUR FIRST WIN AND IF YOU DON’T BELIEVE IN YOURSELF SHOULD YOU REALLY BE THERE?  “The first part, where you’re talking about Matt D.  He has that fire.  He has that burning desire to win a race.  He’s got a lot of heart and a lot of fight in him, so with the right opportunity that he’s in with a good team and a good car he’s gonna get there.  As far as the feeling like you have a shot at winning and getting to the racetrack, I think, yes, you should go there and you should feel like you can do it.  I’ve always felt like I can do it.  I always felt like I had the ability to do it, but a lot of times you know going there that there is no chance that it’s gonna happen, so you have to continue to grow and learn and build to get to that moment.  For me, I always looked at like those start and parks and some of those uncompetitive rides as ‘I’m gonna master getting on pit road, or pit road speed, or a restart and when i get in this situation when I’m in a competitive car, I’ll be able to execute when it counts.’  So you’re always building towards that win, whether you’re in that situation where you have a car or a team good enough to do it because we all know without a fast car and a fast team it’s virtually impossible at the top level, but the belief in yourself, absolutely.  You have to have the belief in yourself and I think, for me, what has changed isn’t so much confidence or belief in myself after the Daytona win because I feel like that was there, if anything it’s just a big relief of pressure.  I noticed at Talladega, and I’m not gonna articulate it well, but you saw my desire to win the race.  I wanted to win that race, but I was a lot better mentally and I made better decisions during that race because I didn’t feel that angst or ‘this is it, this is my last shot, if I don’t do it now it’ll never happen again’ because that’s what I felt for so many years when I’ve been in those positions, and so when I played those last couple laps back, a few years ago I’d have done things differently, not more aggressive, but just because you feel that ‘no matter what, this is it, it has to happen right now, it’ll never happen again,’ and you actually make poor decisions, instead of making good decisions.  So, I don’t know if I articulated that well, but my desire to win is the same, the pressure to win is lower for me, which allowed me to do a better job on Sunday than I’ve done in the past because I felt like I was able to be more methodical and less panicked.  I can’t speak for Matt D., but just knowing how badly he wants that win and leading that lane, and then having to make that choice and knowing that if you make the wrong choice, you’re gonna lose the race, sometimes that can get to you and hurt you.  It’s not a desire to win, it’s actually the opposite, it’s the anxiety of not winning that causes you to make poor decisions.”

HOW DETRIMENTAL IS HOW THEY DO QUALIFYING RIGHT NOW?  “I feel like it’s unique.  I think we would all like to qualify and have it kind of how we used to have it in that regard, but I think this is the fairest way that you can do it based on our limited schedule.  Basing it just on points, I feel like that can put you in a real slump too, where you’re running good but those first five races — like Aric Almirola had a lot of issues those first five races.  He would start in the back every single race for a majority of the year because of that and then that snowballs.  Track position is so important and you can’t get stage points and you just never get out of that hole, so I feel like having the formula that we have that has a percentage of the points and a percentage of your last race is good.  It goes both ways.  When you have a bad day, you’re like, ‘Oh, man.  I’m gonna start pretty far back there.’  But when you have a good one you know that that’s gonna help you the next few weeks.  Is it ideal?  I think it’s ideal for our current schedule and situation, but I think from a sport standpoint we’d all like to go back to qualifying and have it be as legitimate as possible.”

WHAT MAKES ROAD AMERICA A MAN’S MAN TYPE OF COURSE?  “I think it’s just got a few corners that really separate it.  There are other tracks in North America like it.  Mosport would be one that comes to my mind.  Road Atlanta would be another one, and when I say man’s man track, what I mean by that is it takes a level of confidence and aggression to get the most out of it, and so the high-speed kink at Road America is one of the most daunting corners in all of racing.  In an open-wheel car, a sports car, it’s virtually wide-open, but it feels like it’s a single-lane corner.  We’ve seen just hellacious accidents on the exit there because if you get just a little wide and dip a wheel in the grass you only have about three or four feet before you’re in a concrete barrier, so it’s one of those corners that just grabs your attention.  The long straightaways and the very deep braking zones allow for some great overtakes, but you have to be brave.  Going into turn one is not an easy corner to pass, even though it’s a good brake zone.  It just takes a lot of courage to make passes and to be fast there, so that’s just one of the things that stand out there.  When you think about a Sonoma, Sonoma is more technical and you’ve got to be precise.  You’re not trying to push it 11-tenths.  You’re trying to be a six-tenths or seven-tenths because you need to save the tire and you need to be on line, where Road America you can really challenge yourself and push yourself hard.”

WHY HAVE YOU AND BRAD KESELOWSKI WORKED SO WELL TOGETHER ON THE TRACK AT SPEEDWAY RACES IN RECENT YEARS?  “I think it’s just something that’s kind of happened organically.  I haven’t really put a lot to it because there are other Ford teammates out there that we work with, but it just happens that Brad and Joey and I seem to be together a lot, but if I put thought to it I would say that, for me, a lot of these years prior to being at Front Row it was hard for me to find teammates and people to work with because I was driving for single-car teams and maybe not the most speed, so people kind of shove you out.  They kind of spit you out and you’re in the middle or on the outside and just getting freight trained, so I feel like I had to work really hard in those years to wedge myself in there and be there, and Brad and Joey, and there are a handful of other guys, always seemed to work with me and I worked with them.  And then also, too, I don’t know how many years ago, but for a few years I did a lot of development for Team Penske and a lot of R&D, and for two years I was a test driver and doing all the wheelforce testing for Ford and doing their tire model testing and simulator work, so I’ve worked closely with Brad and Joey even though I haven’t been “teammates” but at the same time it’s just worked out.  The one thing that I feel really confident with Brad is he’s good at making decisions.  He’s a good decision maker and so I feel really good being hooked up with him and I feel like he’s predictable or at least I understand and can predict what he’s gonna do, where even inside of our camp just driving style-wise there’s other guys that do things differently, so you just kind of find those matches that works well for you and it’s all about getting yourself the best finish you can for your team and your car, and the best way for me to do that is to work with certain people that it seems to help my program.”

HOW DO YOU BALANCE DISCUSSING YOUR VIEW ON THINGS LIKE VACCINATIONS WHEN YOUR PROFILE HAS BEEN RAISED SO MUCH AFTER WINNING THE DAYTONA 500?  “With so much that’s gone on over the last couple of years and with social media being somewhat polarizing and this election being polarizing and just all the events with the pandemic and racial injustice and all the things that have gone on the last two years, it’s very easy to get mixed up in it, and mixed up in it good or bad, however you want to look at it.  At the beginning of this year I sat down with my team and sat down with Bob Jenkins our owner and we just agreed that we’re a race team.  That’s what we do.  We race.  This is not a political platform for us.  This is not for us to have agendas or trying to encourage people to do things how we do it or vice versa.  We’re a race team.  We’re gonna talk about racing, so that’s how I’ve kept it.  When it comes to those things I’m just gonna talk about racing because that’s what I am, a race car driver.  In my house and in my family we have these conversations and we talk about it, and the thing about it for me is that it shouldn’t be so divisive, and I don’t want to be a part of being divisive.  That’s not what I’m about.  I’m a race car driver, so you’ve got people that are anti this and pro this and it’s not that I’m trying to avoid the question, I’m just gonna talk about racing because that’s what we do.  I feel a lot of times athletes feel like they have this platform to have a voice, and there’s too many voices out there.  There’s just too many voices.  I mean, you guys see it every day.  Everybody’s got an opinion.”

WHY NOT USE IT FOR A PLATFORM, WHETHER IT’S POLITICAL OR NOT?  YOU USED YOUR K-LOVE PARTNERSHIP TO SHARE YOUR CHRISTIANITY.  WHAT MAKES THIS DIFFERENT?  “For me, who I am is a follower of Christ.  That’s who I am.  I am not a pro-vaccinator.  I am not an anti-vaccinator.  I’m a follower of Christ.  So the reason I use my platform to share that is because that’s who I am.  That’s what is important to me.  Whether you’re vaccinated or not is not important to me currently because I’m not a doctor or a scientist or a biologist.  There are a lot of people that are telling you lots of different things, but, for me, sharing my faith is important because that’s who I am.  I’m not a doctor or scientist, so that part of it isn’t important to me.”

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO GET ANOTHER TOP FIVE FINISH AND KEEP YOUR MOMENTUM GOING?  “It felt good.  I think not just the result but racing well, being up there all day, getting stage points in both stages and then getting another top five and being in position to win the race.  But I think more than anything it’s running well and being in position to win the race.  It felt great to kind of back that up.  For me, statistically Daytona has been so good for me and Talladega hasn’t.  I’ve had a few top fives at Talladega or maybe one or two now, but it’s not been the same as Daytona for me, so to get a good one under my belt and to build on the Daytona 500 momentum at Talladega, which has been a bit of a struggle for me, was definitely a confidence booster.”

WITH YOU BEING LOCKED IN THE PLAYOFFS DOES IT CHANGE YOUR STRATEGY THE REST OF THE SEASON?  “We’ve heard all these years that you win and you’re in, but it’s actually not the case.  As we’re all kind of learning that there is an outside chance that if there are more than 16 winners you could win a race and be out, so we’re not playing it conservative.  We definitely don’t feel overly confident that that’s a locked done deal, and that’s part of the reason why I fought so hard to try to win that race at Talladega is if we get another win I’m pretty confident you’d be absolutely in — statistically says you would be — so two wins is what you need to make sure that you’re absolutely in, but it doesn’t change our approach.  I think the one thing that it does is it allows us to be a bit more aggressive in terms of opportunities with strategy and things like that if something presents itself.  You never want to give up a result, but this week at Kansas if you’re maybe a gallon short and you’re a lap or two short on fuel, you’ll probably roll the dice and try to get to the end and try to win a race if you can.  If you run out of race and lose some points, it’s not a big deal, where those guys who are fighting for every point in 15th, 16th and 17th as you get closer to the regular season ending, they can’t give up anything.  I do feel like we can be more aggressive and take more chances, but by no means is it a case where we’re sitting pretty and it’s a free-for-all.  We still have a lot to fight for and one of the important things for us is staying ahead of some of those guys that could be those surprise winners.  It’s important for us to be ahead of them in points, so in fact if you get to later in the year and a Cole Custer or a Bubba Wallace or one of those guys that’s behind you in points wins a race, that really puts you in jeopardy, so you can’t put your guard down, that’s for sure.”

DJK RACING WELCOMES NEW ASSOCIATE PARTNER SPARK POWER

April 27, 2021. Preparations continue for the 2021 racing season at the DJK Racing shop in St. Thomas, Ontario with a focus on race victories in the NASCAR Pinty’s Series. The new season is just over a month away and DJK Racing is delighted to welcome Spark Power as a new associate partner to the operation that will mean an expansion of the DJK Racing program.

The new relationship will have Spark Power aboard the famed #17 Dodge driven by Kennington in the NASCAR Pinty’s Series. In addition, Spark Power will also be the primary sponsor of the #88 DJK Racing entry in the APC Late Model Series and other special event races. Racing the #88 Spark Power Charger will be longtime DJK Racing crew member Rick Verberne.

“I’m really excited about this partnership” said DJK Racing principal DJ Kennington. “Rick has had an association with Spark Power for a couple of years, he connected everyone together, Spark was part of a Cup Series race I ran at Martinsville in 2019. And now we’ve come up with a pretty cool partnership that works for everyone” he added.

Growing and expanding the DJK Racing footprint and driver line up is something that Kennington has been looking at for some time. “I’d like to, but I know I can’t drive every race in every series” explained Kennington. “And our racing business is growing. It’s gratifying to have good people like Rick Verberne who’s worked so hard with us and companies like Spark Power that want to be part of what we do here.

Rick Verberne has worked with DJK Racing since 2016 and was the Crew Chief for the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge team last season. His racing credits include Delaware Speedway Rookie of the Year in the Truck Series in 2006, A Truck Champion in 2015 and 2017 and Super Stock Rookie of the Year in 2018.

“I’m pretty pumped up for the season” said Verberne. “Our plan is to run select APC Series races and perhaps some special events if our schedules allow this season. Spark Power will also be a partner on my son Ryan’s Micro Sprint Car. This is going to be a lot of fun” he stated.

The 2021 NASCAR Pinty’s Series season and the APC Series are both scheduled to open competition later this summer.

The NASCAR Pinty’s Series races are broadcast on TSN in Canada. Broadcast dates and times will be available soon.

Chandler Smith – No. 18 Safelite AutoGlass Tundra Camping World Trucks Kansas Preview

Chandler Smith: Driver, No. 18 Safelite AutoGlass® Toyota

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Overview:
Event: Wise Power 200, Race 7 of 22, 134 Laps – 30/30/74; 201 Miles
Location: Kansas Speedway in Kansas City (1.5-mile tri-oval)
Date/Broadcast: May 1, 2021 at 7:30 p.m. ET on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR 90

Mr. Smith Goes to the Sunflower State:

  • Chandler Smith and the No. 18 Safelite AutoGlass team head to Kansas Speedway for Saturday’s Wise Power 200. The 18-year-old rookie is coming off his best finish of the season, a fourth-place result at Richmond (Va.) Raceway. Smith was out front for 24 laps before giving way to teammate and eventual race winner John Hunter Nemechek with 17 laps remaining and eventually sliding back two more spots in the closing laps with older tires on his Tundra.
  • The Georgia native will be making his second career Camping World Truck Series start at Kansas. He led one lap and finished fifth last October at the 1.5-mile track. During last year’s race, he posted an average running position of 6.0 and a driver rating of 111.3. Smith also has one ARCA Menards Series start in The Sunflower State, a 13th-place finish in 2020.
  • Smith comes into Saturday’s race 12th in the Camping World Truck Series championship standings. He currently sits 12 points behind Johnny Sauter for the 10th and final spot in the playoffs. In the Rookie of the Year standings, Smith sits second, 10 points behind Carson Hocevar. Smith’s fourth-place result at Richmond earned him the rookie of the race award, his third of the season.
  • The Toyota Racing Development driver has finished inside the top five in nine of his 22 career Camping World Truck Series starts, including a career-best runner-up finish at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway in 2019.
  • The talented teenager recorded nine wins, 10 poles and an average finish of 5.3 across 33 ARCA Menards Series starts the last three seasons. He captured the pole in his series debut at Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville (Tenn.) in April of 2018 and set an ARCA Menards Series record by winning four consecutive poles to start his career. He earned his first victory at Madison (Wis.) International Speedway in just his fourth series start in June of 2018. Despite running a part-time schedule, he led the series in laps led in both 2018 and 2019.
  • Veteran crew chief Danny Stockman will call the shots for Smith and the No. 18 team this season. Stockman led the No. 51 team to four wins in his first season atop the pit box at KBM in 2020. He came to the organization with experience as a crew chief in all three national series, including a Truck Series championship with Austin Dillon in 2011 and an Xfinity Series championship with Dillon in 2013. Stockman’s Camping World Truck Series drivers have totaled one top-five and three top-10 finishes across five starts at Kansas. Smith’s fifth-place result last October was his best result. In Xfinity Series action, his drivers recorded three top-five and four top-10 finishes across five starts, including runner-up finishes with Austin Dillon (2012) and Daniel Hemric (2018).
  • Safelite AutoGlass – the nation’s largest provider of vehicle glass repair, replacement, and recalibration services – will be the primary sponsor of Smith’s Tundra this weekend at Kansas and for 15 races total this season. Smith General Contracting and Katerra will be associate partners on the bedtop of the No. 18 Toyota for Saturday’s 134-lap event.

Chandler Smith, Driver Q&A:

After some tough luck earlier in the year, how important was it for you and your team to have a top-5 finish at Richmond?
“It was definitely big getting that top five at Richmond. We’ve definitely had some horrible luck at the beginning of this season. I feel like things are starting to turn around and work in our favor. We’re going to start chipping away at it.”

As a young driver with no practice or qualifying, how much does it help going back to tracks you’ve already raced at?
“Considering I’ve already been to Kansas once in a Truck and that there is no practice here again, it’s going to be a big help that I was there last year. We were really strong. We are coming back with the same setup, so I’m really excited to get my Safelite AutoGlass Toyota Tundra out there and park it in victory lane!”

How does Kansas compare to the other 1.5-mile tracks you’ve raced at?
“Kansas is just different. Each mile-and-a-half track varies. It’s just a completely different track. The characteristics are that there is a lot of grip to where you can run the top or the bottom just depending on how your truck is. Last year, I was able to make the bottom work all race where everyone else was running the top and I ran the same speed. It’s a really cool track. I’m excited to go back. It’s one that I’ve had circled.”

Chandler Smith Career Highlights:

  • Across 22 career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts has recorded 139 laps led, nine top-five and 11 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 14.1.
  • Posted an average finish of 7.7 across his final seven of 12 total Truck Series starts in 2020, including third-place finishes in the series finale at Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway and his first career superspeedway start at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway in October.
  • Produced three top-five and four top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 4.2 across his first four career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts in 2019. He led 55 laps and finished eighth in his Gander Trucks debut at Iowa Speedway last July and then posted top-five finishes in his final three starts, including a runner-up finish at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.
  • Has collected nine wins, 10 poles, 1761 laps led, 22 top-five and 29 top-10 finishes en route to an average finish of 5.2 across 33 career ARCA Menards Series starts. Set an ARCA Racing Series record by winning four consecutive poles to start his career and earned his first victory after leading a race-high 102 laps at Madison (Wis.) International Speedway in his fourth series start.

Chandler Smith’s No. 18 Safelite AutoGlass Tundra:
KBM-63: The No. 18 Safelite AutoGlass team will unload chassis number KBM-63 for Saturday’s Wise Power 200 at Kansas. The Tundra has an average finish of 6.0 across five career starts, including a victory with KBM owner-driver Kyle Busch at Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway last June. Smith got behind the wheel of KBM-63 once last year, a fifth-place finish at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway in September.

KBM Notes of Interest:

  • KBM drivers have collected four wins, four poles, 621 laps led, 13 top-five and 22 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 9.9 across 34 starts at Kansas.
  • Noah Gragson led a race-high 128 laps and swept all three stages in the 2018 event at Kansas. Owner-driver Kyle Busch has collected two wins at Kansas (2014 & 2017) and William Byron earned his first career Camping World Trucks victory there in 2016.
  • KBM holds the Camping World Truck Series records for most career wins (84) and most wins in a single season (14 in 2014). With his victory at the Bristol Motor Speedway Dirt Track, Martin Truex Jr. became the 16th different driver to win a Truck Series event for KBM. In addition to collecting a series-record seven Owner’s Championships, the organization has produced two championship-winning drivers: Erik Jones (2015) and Christopher Bell (2017).
  • The No. 18, the number which was on the first Tundra that went to victory lane for KBM in 2010, has 21 career victories.

Ford Performance NASCAR: Ford Going For Series-Leading Fifth Cup Win This Weekend In Kansas

FORD PERFORMANCE NASCAR: KANSAS ADVANCE

The NASCAR Cup and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will be competing this weekend at Kansas Speedway, where Joey Logano came away with a victory last October. Ford will be looking for a series-leading fifth Cup win of the season after Brad Keselowski’s triumph at Talladega on Sunday while the truck series returns to action following an off weekend.

This Week’s Schedule:

Saturday, May 1 – NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, 7:30 p.m. ET (FS1)
Sunday, May 2 – NASCAR Cup Series, 3 p.m. ET (FS1)

FORD IN THE NASCAR CUP SERIES AT KANSAS

  • Ford has nine all-time NASCAR Cup Series wins at Kansas.
  • Kevin Harvick, Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano all have multiple Cup wins at Kansas.
  • Mark Martin registered Ford’s first Cup win at Kansas in 2005.

FORD IN THE NASCAR CAMPING WORLD TRUCK SERIES AT KANSAS

  • Ford has four series victories at Kansas.
  • Jon Wood won Ford’s first series race at the track.
  • Carl Edwards, Terry Cook and Erik Darnell also have one win each.

MUSTANG CONTINUES TO ROLL SINCE JOINING CUP

Ford’s win on Sunday broke a three-way tie for most victories in the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series season as Brad Keselowski’s overtime triumph was the manufacturer’s fourth of the year. Michael McDowell started the year by winning the Daytona 500 before the Team Penske trio of Ryan Blaney (Atlanta), Joey Logano (Bristol Dirt) and Keselowski (Talladega) followed. Since coming into the Cup Series in 2019, Mustang has produced 32 victories in 82 starts for a 39 percent win rate – best among manufacturers during that stretch.

TEAM PENSKE CONTINUES EARLY SEASON WIN TREND

Brad Keselowski’s win at Talladega Superspeedway last weekend means all three Team Penske drivers have a victory this season after only 10 races. Keselowski, along with Joey Logano (Bristol Dirt) and Ryan Blaney (Atlanta) have all won at least once each year since the Penske organization went to three cars in 2018, but this marks the earliest that has happened. Since becoming teammates in 2013, Keselowski and Logano have made it a habit to win early in the season. This marks the sixth time both of them have recorded at least one victory in the first 10 races of the year.

MOST DIFFERENT FORD DRIVERS TO WIN IN A SEASON

Through the first 10 races there have been nine different winners overall in the NASCAR Cup Series, including four Ford drivers (Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano, Ryan Blaney and Michael McDowell). The highest number of different Ford winners in one season during the modern era (1972-present) was last achieved in 2018 when seven drivers ended up in Victory Lane (Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer, Joey Logano, Kurt Busch, Brad Keselowski, Aric Almirola and Ryan Blaney). That number was achieved for the first time in 1994 (Rusty Wallace, Ernie Irvan, Jimmy Spencer, Ricky Rudd, Geoffrey Bodine, Mark Martin and Bill Elliott) and repeated three years later in 1997 (Rusty Wallace, Dale Jarrett, Jeff Burton, Mark Martin, Ricky Rudd, Ernie Irvan and John Andretti). Ford has had six different drivers win at least one race in a season eight times.

LOGANO GOING FOR FOURTH KANSAS VICTORY

Joey Logano has three career NASCAR Cup Series wins at Kansas Speedway after capturing the playoff race in October, which is tied for the most victories he’s had at one facility. Logano also has three wins at Michigan International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway. Logano won for the first time at Kansas in 2014 and automatically advanced in the playoffs, and then did it again one year later in a well-documented battle with Matt Kenseth that resulted in contact as the two entered turn one with five laps to go. That controversial finish marked Logano’s second straight win in the Chase and led to a sweep of the Contender Round as he took the checkered flag the following week at Talladega Superspeedway.

HARVICK NETS FIRST KANSAS FORD WIN

Kevin Harvick passed Martin Truex Jr. coming to the white flag and held on to capture his fifth victory of the season after winning at Kansas Speedway in 2018. Harvick, who started on the pole, had a competitive car all night as he led five times for 79 laps and finished second the first two stages. A series of late-race cautions set the stage for Harvick to rally after a red flag with 14 laps remaining reset the field. Even though Truex built a good-sized lead, Harvick was able to close the gap with three laps to go before making the decisive pass. The win gave Harvick back-to-back NASCAR Cup Series wins for the second time in 2018, a year that saw him win eight times overall.

ON THE MARK

Ford went to victory for the first time at Kansas Speedway on Oct. 9, 2005 when Mark Martin took the checkered flag in what was a Roush Fenway Racing runaway with teammates Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards finishing second and third, respectively. Martin led a race-high 139 laps, including 81 of the final 83 circuits, to win by one-half second. It marked the second time in as many months that RFR swept the top three spots, a feat it did two more times during that season. In addition, the victory ended up being Martin’s last with Ford. His 35 series wins with the manufacturer ranks third all-time behind leader Ned Jarrett (43) and second-place Bill Elliott (40).

FORD NASCAR CUP SERIES WINNERS AT KANSAS

2005 – Mark Martin
2007 – Greg Biffle

QUOTE WORTHY
Buescher on racing at Kansas:
“We’re looking forward to putting the AutoTempest Ford on the track for the first time this season, a brand we’re excited to work with as they’re car-lovers like us. Kansas is a super-fast race track and one that widens out throughout a race. Our goal is to have our No. 17 dialed in early and get to the front for another solid finish.”

Last Time Out
Despite avoiding all of the early crashes last Sunday at Talladega, Chris Buescher was hooked in the right rear coming to the checkered flag and was relegated to a 21st-place finish with damage on his Fastenal Ford.

Where They Rank
Buescher is tied for 15th in points entering Kansas as the fight for playoff positions heats up now more than a quarter through the 2021 campaign.

On the Car
AutoTempest, an aggregator of online classified advertisements specifically for cars, makes its NASCAR debut alongside Buescher and the No. 17 team this weekend in Kansas. They will return for their second race May 23 at COTA in Austin, Texas.
