Austin Hill suspended after intentionally wrecking Aric Almirola at Indianapolis

NASCAR has suspended Austin Hill for one race after determining that he intentionally wrecked Aric Almirola in the Xfinity Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“It was definitely intentional, “Almirola commented after the race.

Almirola admitted that he made slight contact with Hill during the race in an attempt to pass him.

“I got him loose and he just turned left and hooked me in the right rear,” Almirola said.

“[It was] honestly one of the biggest hits in my entire NASCAR career. Very reminiscent of the hit I took when I broke my back [in 2017 at Kansas].”

Hill will serve his suspension this weekend at Iowa Speedway. Austin Dillon will replace him in the Richard Childress Racing No. 21 Xfinity Series car.

Richard Childress Racing issued the following update on social media.

“Richard Childress Racing will not appeal the penalty NASCAR issued to the No. 21 team following the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. “We remain focused on winning a championship with Austin Hill in 2025. Austin Dillon will race the No. 21 Chevrolet at Iowa Speedway.”

Hill’s suspension means that he will forfeit his playoff points (21) and will be ineligible to collect more points during the regular season. To retain his eligibility for the Playoffs, he will have to request a waiver.

Justin Haley – Driver, No. 7 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet ZL1

  • Justin Haley will pilot Spire Motorsports’ No. 7 Gainbridge Chevrolet ZL1 in Sunday’s Iowa Corn 350 Powered by Ethanol at Iowa Speedway.
  • In last season’s inaugural Cup Series visit to Iowa, Haley started 19th and raced his way to a respectable 13th-place finish.
  • Last weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), the Winamac, Ind., native finished 11th, a venue best. He led 15 laps and survived multiple attempts at NASCAR Overtime to collect the result. He crossed the line behind teammate Carson Hocevar, who secured a team-best 10th-place finish at IMS.

Atop the No. 7 Box – Crew Chief Ryan Sparks

  • Ryan Sparks serves in a dual role as both Spire Motorsports Competition Director and crew chief for the No. 7 team. He and driver Justin Haley were first paired up at Kansas Speedway in September 2024.

Michael McDowell – Driver, No. 71 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet ZL1

  • Michael McDowell will pilot Spire Motorsports’ No. 71 Delaware Life Chevrolet ZL1 in Sunday’s Iowa Corn 350 Powered by Ethanol at Iowa Speedway.
  • In last season’s inaugural NASCAR Cup Series event at “The Fastest Short Track on the Planet,” McDowell started 22nd and finished 23rd.
  • The Glendale, Ariz., native tallied eight Xfinity Series starts at the 0.875-mile oval, collecting two top fives and seven top 10s, highlighted by a runner-up finish in August 2014.
  • While transitioning from open-wheel racing to stock cars, McDowell made a pair of ARCA Menards Series appearances at Iowa in 2006 and 2007, finishing seventh and second, respectively.

  • The 40-year-old has claimed three Xfinity Fastest Lap awards this season, clocking the fastest lap in the Daytona 500, Phoenix Raceway and Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway. The team is one of three in the series to tally three or more bonus points via the program.
  • The No. 71 team secured Spire Motorsports’ first Busch Light Pole Award at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in March. The 28.833-second lap marks the fastest lap in NASCAR’s seventh-generation Cup Series car (2022-present) at the 1.5-mile Nevada oval. Three weekends ago, the team also earned the first stage win in team history during the Grant Park 165 on the streets of downtown Chicago.

“Iowa was great. It was a fun weekend. I’ve raced there a bunch in Xfinity and ARCA. Even in years when I wasn’t running full-time in Xfinity, I’d still do the standalone races for (Joe) Gibbs (Racing) or whoever.

It was honestly my best track in Xfinity from a results standpoint, but going back there last year—it was so different. The track had aged in some areas, but then there was new asphalt and patches. It was a very different racetrack.

It was still fun. Big crowd, big event. Going back this time, I think everyone is looking forward to having their cars drive a little better, getting over that bump in Turn 1 a little smoother, and not being so caught off guard by how challenging the track is. It’s another big opportunity for us.”

  • Crew chief Travis Peterson calls the shots for Michael McDowell and the No. 71 team, and will stand atop the “war wagon” for the second time at the Newton-oval.
  • During his time as an Xfinity Series race engineer at JR Motorsports, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte engineering graduate collected one top five and three top 10s, highlighted by a fourth-place result with Chase Elliott in May 2014.

Carson Hocevar – Driver, No. 77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet ZL1

  • Carson Hocevar will pilot the No. 77 MINER Chevrolet ZL1 for Spire Motorsports in Sunday’s Iowa Corn 350 Powered by Ethanol at Iowa Speedway. The event will mark Hocevar’s second NASCAR Cup Series start at the 0.875-mile track following a 14th-place effort in his first outing last year.
  • Hocevar has made 11 Cup Series starts on tracks measuring less than one-mile in distance. His lone top-10 finish on short tracks came in August 2024 when he piloted his Spire Chevy to eighth at the 0.75-mile Richmond Raceway, a track that served as 2013 NASCAR Hall of Fame Inductee Rusty Wallace’s inspiration for the layout of Iowa.

  • Like his driver, crew chief Luke Lambert will call just his second NASCAR Cup Series race at Iowa this weekend.
  • The Mount Airy, N.C., native has called 68 short track races over his 13-year career in the Cup Series, resulting in four top-five and 18 top-10 finishes.
  • The 44-year-old has been atop the box for two previous NASCAR Xfinity Series races at Iowa, both coming in 2012. On May 20, 2012, Lambert led Elliott Sadler to the pole position and a runner-up finish. When the series returned to Iowa later that August, Sadler started from the pole and led 60 laps en route to the win.

BRAINERD INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY SET TO HOST PENULTIMATE RACE OF 2025 REGULAR SEASON

BRAINERD, Minn. (July 29, 2025) – With NHRA’s first-ever regular-season championship on the line, the 43rd annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals, which takes place at the famed Brainerd International Raceway on Aug. 14-17, comes at a pivotal, must-see point in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season.

It is the 13th of 20 events during the 2025 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season and will feature all the stars in Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock. The event will be broadcast on FS1 with elimination coverage on FOX on Sunday, Aug. 17, as world title hopefuls look to build momentum for the Countdown to the Championship playoffs.

For more than four decades, Brainerd International Raceway has been one of the most unique stops on the NHRA tour thanks to its festive atmosphere, the famed “Zoo” camping facility and some of the fastest racing on the NHRA circuit. The dedicated and racing-thirsty fans have flocked to the standout track to see the 12,000-horsepower, 340-mph nitro-burning machines in action, with the weekend always coming at a memorable point in the season.

Last year, Justin Ashley (Top Fuel), Blake Alexander (Funny Car) and Dallas Glenn (Pro Stock) all won in Brainerd, while Antron Brown, Austin Prock and Greg Anderson took home Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge wins.

Ashley picked up his first Brainerd win last season when he defeated Shawn Langdon. This year, Ashley has two wins to his credit, but Langdon leads the way on the strength of three wins. He leads 2024 NHRA Rookie of the Year and motorsports legend Tony Stewart by 48 points with another showdown set for Brainerd. Other Top Fuel standouts include Brittany Force, who went 343-mph in Sonoma, Sonoma winner Doug Kalitta, reigning world champion Brown and Clay Millican.

This season, the Funny Car ranks have again been dominated by reigning Funny Car champion Prock, who leads the class with five wins on the season and has a chance to clinch the regular-season championship in Brainerd. Others to watch in Brainerd will be Jack Beckman, J.R. Todd, Paul Lee, Seattle winner Matt Hagan and Ron Capps, the winningest active driver at BIR with seven wins to his credit.

Pro Stock’s Glenn won his second consecutive Brainerd race last season, defeating Mason McGaha in the final round. Glenn currently leads the way in Pro Stock, holding a 37-point advantage over KB Titan Racing teammate and reigning world champion Anderson. Anderson, originally from Duluth, Minn., is a three-time Brainerd winner. The regular season title will be decided between the KB Titan duo, but Elite Motorsports has turned the corner, with Greg Stanfield winning the most recent event in Sonoma, snapping KB Titan’s 11-race winning streak.

The event will also feature thrilling competition in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, as well as action in Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage Mountain Motor Pro Stock and Pingel NHRA Top Fuel Motorcycle Series.

Fans are invited to the Nitro Alley Stage, the entertainment hub in the pits, hosting Nitro School, meet and greets, music and more. Brainerd race fans can enjoy the special pre-race ceremonies that introduce and celebrate each of the drivers racing for the prestigious Wally on Sunday and includes the fan favorite SealMaster Track Walk. The final can’t-miss experience of any NHRA event is the winner’s circle celebration on Sunday after racing concludes, where fans are invited to congratulate event winners.

Three GTP entries tackle challenging Road America in final IMSA sprint race

DETROIT (July 29, 2025) – With back-to-back podium finishes, including a double podium in the most recent IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race at Watkins Glen International, Cadillac Wayne Taylor Racing is riding a wave of momentum.

The two-car Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) team, in its first IMSA season back with Cadillac after a four-year hiatus, will look to continue its upward trend this weekend in the Motul SportsCar Grand Prix at Road America.

The 4.048-mile, 14-turn natural-terrain course, which will host the 2-hour, 40-minute race Sunday, is a favorite among drivers.

“Road America has always been great. It’s an awesome track; so fast. Obviously, it will be the first time with the Cadillac. It’s still a new car to us, but we just came off a great event at Watkins with our first podium, our first double podium for the team,” said Louis Deletraz, who co-drove with Jordan Taylor the No. 40 Cadillac Wayne Taylor Racing V-Series.R to a runner-up finish. “We want to build momentum from that.”

The sister No. 10 Cadillac Wayne Taylor Racing V-Series.R, driven by Ricky Taylor and Filipe Albuquerque, has earned podium spots the past two races (Detroit, Watkins Glen).

Wayne Taylor Racing swept the front row in qualifying for the 2024 race with another manufacturer, with Ricky Taylor and Albuquerque earning the pole and finishing third.

“Road America is definitely the race we’re most ready for and where we have the most data and the most experience. So, I’m really looking forward to see how we get on there,” added Deletraz.

In 2024, the No. 31 Whelen Cadillac V-Series.R was the highest finisher in fourth, and Jack Aitken and Earl Bamber are also coming off a strong effort at Watkins Glen in which they led a field-high 71 of 168 laps and placed fifth.

Cadillac Racing has earned three pole starts, eight podiums and one victory at the track since its 2017 IMSA prototype competition debut.

Peacock will stream the race live for U.S. subscribers beginning at 2 p.m. ET Sunday, while streaming will be available outside the U.S. at IMSA.tv. We had really good pace at Watkins and unfortunately just didn’t manage to get a result from that, but the pace should certainly carry over to Road America. I’m optimistic about that and looking forward to getting on to the podium and hopefully the top step at Road America.”

Earl Bamber: “Road America is one of my favorite North American circuits and I’m looking forward to returning with Action Express Racing and the No. 31 Whelen Cadillac V-Series.R. Alex (Lynn) and I had a second-place finish in 2022 in the final year of the DPi and with the pace we’ve shown at Watkins Glen and Laguna Seca we can contend for the victory. It was great for (Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA) and Cadillac to get a 1-2 finish in the WEC race in Sao Paulo. Now we want to get that first IMSA victory of the season.”

After qualifying 10th, Cindric moved into the ninth position early and took the lead following a Lap 18 caution when the team opted to stay out. He held the point, reporting his happiness with his car’s clean air balance, before pitting under green with eight laps to go in Stage 1. The strategy dropped him to 31st at the Stage break, but staying out under caution allowed him to restart fourth for Stage 2. Cindric cycled back to the lead as others pitted, but a blown right-rear tire forced him to limp to pit road with just over 15 laps remaining in the Stage. After receiving right-side tires, he went on to finish the segment in the 24th position. Cindric received the free pass and visited pit road for four tires and fuel, and lined up 23rd – on the lead lap – for the restart. Just looking to reset after the misfortune, Cindric and the Discount Tire team fired off for the final Stage looking to make the most of the laps left before making a green flag pit stop with about 40 laps remaining. A light rain shower over Turn 1 brought out the red flag with six laps left in the crown jewel event as Cindric was scored in the 20th position, setting up an overtime finish at The Brickyard. As the chaos played out, the Team Penske driver fought through to take the checkered flag in the 15th position.

CINDRIC’S THOUGHTS: “We had a really strong Discount Tire Ford Mustang today. It was great to lead laps and have pace up front, just unfortunate to have a tire go down. Proud of the fight from everyone to battle back and get a solid finish out of it.”

RYAN BLANEY No. 12 MENARDS/DELTA FORD MUSTANG DARK HORSE

RACE RUNDOWN: Ryan Blaney picked up his fifth stage win of the season as he and the No. 12 Menards/Delta Ford Mustang Dark Horse team turned in a seventh-place finish in Sunday’s Brickyard 400, marking their 10th top-10 result on the year. After taking the green flag from 24th, Blaney worked his way into the top-20 by the halfway point of the opening stage before crossing the line 12th in Stage 1 as varying strategies throughout the field began to unfold. Despite restarting the second segment from 24th, the No. 12 Menards/Delta Ford made its way up to third in the running order during the green flag pit cycle before a caution with 10 laps remaining in Stage 2 prompted crew chief Jonathan Hassler to leave Blaney on track to assume the lead before the field took the green with four to go. Blaney ultimately held off the No. 5 in the closing laps to secure his fifth stage win of the season. Due to maximizing their fuel window on the prior run, Blaney pit a lap early for his scheduled stop under caution, resulting in having to restart at the tail of the field, but the 12 team’s strategy put them back out in front on lap 128 before making one final trip to pit road with 10 laps to go. A brief rain shower brought out the red flag with four laps remaining with Blaney scored 22nd, setting up a green-white-checkered finish once track drying was complete. Blaney successfully evaded a multi-car incident on the backstretch during the first attempt before going from 13th to seventh on the final restart of the afternoon to rally for a top-10 result.

BLANEY’S THOUGHTS: “Yeah, we pieced together a good day. Starting towards the back, it’s just hard to make up ground and pass, so we were trying to do the best job of strategy that we could. We made good moves to win the stage. I knew we were going to pay the price for it, but it was hard to give it up and nice when you’re able to hang on like that. We just scratched and clawed and were able to finish seventh. It was a day where we weren’t the best, but we made something happen, and those are the days that we should be proud of.”

JOEY LOGANO No. 22 SHELL-PENNZOIL FORD MUSTANG DARK HORSE
START: 15TH STAGE 1: 34TH STAGE 2: 8TH FINISH: 32ND POINTS: 12TH
RACE RUNDOWN: Joey Logano and the No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Ford Mustang Dark Horse team had the right strategy to put them in contention for the win in Sunday’s Brickyard 400, but a flat right rear tire with 26 laps to go followed by sustaining terminal damage in a multi-car incident in the closing laps ultimately resulted in a 32nd-place finish. Logano took the green flag from 15th before an early caution on lap 18 saw crew chief Paul Wolfe keep the No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Ford on track – one of three teams to do so – as Logano lined up to restart on the front row. Logano was able to maintain his track position up until a scheduled green flag stop on lap 41 in order to flip the stage, resulting in a 34th-place finish in Stage 1. With a majority of the field pitting during the stage caution, Logano cycled back up to sixth to take the green flag for Stage 2 and settled into eighth in the running order. As the green flag pit cycle began to shape up, Logano took the lead with 17 laps remaining in the segment and was called to pit road during the same lap for four tires and fuel. A caution seven laps later brought another wave of cars down pit road, allowing Logano to get back into the top-10 prior to the restart before going on to pick up an eighth-place result in Stage 2. The varying strategies throughout the field began to take shape in the final stage as Wolfe brought Logano to pit road early in the cycle on lap 117 for right sides tires and fuel as the two-tire stop allowed Logano to jump those ahead of him and eventually take the lead once the cycle was complete. However, with 26 laps to go, Logano suffered a flat right rear tire on the backstretch that forced him to come down pit road under green. The No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Ford then lost power while attempting to leave the pit stall and subsequently went two laps down before rejoining the field. Following a brief red flag for rain with four laps to go, Logano lined up 27th for the first green-white-checkered attempt before a multi-car incident unraveled ahead of him just before the entrance to turn three, resulting in the No. 38 sliding down the track and making contact with the right front of the No. 22. The 22 team attempted to fix the issue on pit road, but the damage ultimately brought an end to the afternoon in Indianapolis.

LOGANO’S THOUGHTS: “We had the race-winning strategy, just unfortunately didn’t get a chance to see it all the way through after we lost the right rear. [Crew chief] Paul [Wolfe] and the guys hit on everything all day with staying out during that first caution to get us track position early and it seemed like it was only going to be a matter of holding off everyone behind us and having enough fuel for the final 20 or so laps. Disappointed to see it end that way but still proud of the effort this weekend”
