Toyota GAZOO Racing Weekly Preview 2.19.25

This Week in Motorsports: February 17 – 23, 2025

· NCS/NXS/NCTS: Atlanta Motor Speedway – Feb. 21-23

PLANO, Texas (Feb. 19, 2025) – After another thrilling Daytona 500 last Sunday, NASCAR’s three national series head to another drafting track in Atlanta Motor Speedway for the second race of the 2025 season.

NASCAR National Series – NCS/NXS/NCTS

Toyota goes for sixth straight Cup pole … With the pole position run by Chase Briscoe last weekend, Toyota’s first Daytona 500 pole, Camry XSE drivers will look to add a sixth straight Cup Series pole position for Toyota this weekend in Atlanta. The streak dates back to Las Vegas last October where Christopher Bell earned the top starting spot. Should Toyota claim the pole this weekend, it would be its fifth at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

LEGACY MOTOR CLUB experiences premier day at Daytona … Sunday’s Daytona 500 was significant for LEGACY MOTOR CLUB, who had their best result-based weekend as a team with their three drivers finishing inside the top 12 positions – Jimmie Johnson (third), John Hunter Nemechek (fifth) and Erik Jones (12th). For Johnson and Nemechek, these results were their best as a part of LEGACY MOTOR CLUB. Heading to Atlanta this weekend, both LEGACY MOTOR CLUB full-time entries of Jones (seventh) and Nemechek (ninth) are inside the top 10 of the Cup Series points standings and look to climb up with another solid day in The Peach State.

Almirola returns to a GR Supra … In Saturday’s Xfinity Series race, Aric Almirola will pilot a Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) Toyota GR Supra, driving the No. 19. The Floridian made 14 Xfinity Series starts last season with JGR, scoring three victories, eight top-fives and nine top-10s. Almirola has made three previous starts at Atlanta in the Xfinity Series, with a career-best finish of eighth in 2011.

Jones back at home track … For the 14th time in his Xfinity Series career, Brandon Jones will race at his home track of Atlanta Motor Speedway. The Atlanta native has one career top-five and four top-10s at the mile-and-a-half drafting track. A home race victory for Jones would give Toyota its seventh Xfinity Series win at Atlanta and first since Ty Gibbs in 2022.

Heim seeks to continue winning ways at home track … Like Jones in the Xfinity Series, Corey Heim is also back at his home track of Atlanta Motor Speedway. The 22-year-old, coming off a win last weekend at Daytona, looks to capture his 13th career Truck Series triumph this weekend and second at Atlanta to couple his 2022 victory. Heim also enters the weekend with eight top-10 finishes in the last nine Truck Series races.

Breidinger, Ruggiero, Sawalich make Atlanta debuts … Toni Briedinger, Gio Ruggiero and William Sawalich head to Atlanta Motor Speedway this weekend, each making their debuts at the mile-and-a-half. All three drivers are coming off another drafting track in Daytona last weekend, where rookie Ruggiero claimed a second-place finish in his first career Trucks start and for Sawalich, his fourth career Truck Series top-10 finish. And like last weekend, Sawalich will once again do double duty on Saturday, running the Truck Series race before driving the No. 18 GR Supra for JGR in the Xfinity Series later that afternoon.

Coming off a top-five finish in last weekend’s NASCAR Xfinity Series season opening event in Daytona, Carson Kvapil will make his Atlanta Motor Speedway debut on Saturday.

Kvapil has made two starts at 1.5-mile tracks in the ARCA Menards series finishing in the runner-up position both times.

Crew chief Andrew Overstreet sat atop the box for two races at intermediate tracks during the 2024 season with a best finish of fourth coming at Kansas.

Carson Kvapil

“This No. 1 Bass Pro Shops/Clarience Technologies team gave me a fast race car last week for Daytona and I hope we can continue that momentum into this weekend at Atlanta. Since this is a track I haven’t been to before, Andrew (Overstreet, crew chief) and I have been working hard on our strategy to make sure I am fully prepared. I am looking forward to getting out there and putting everything we have worked on into motion. Ideally we can be battling for the lead at the end to get another great finish for Johnny Morris and everyone at Bass Pro Shops and Clarience Technologies.”

Points: 10th

Justin Allgaier has earned one win, three top fives and nine top 10s in 18 career starts at Atlanta in the NXS.

Allgaier’s lone victory came in this event in 2021 after starting sixth and leading 47 laps en route to the win.

Since the shift of Atlanta to a more drafting-dominant track like Daytona International Speedway or Talladega Superspeedway, Allgaier has scored a best finish of seventh, coming in the spring of 2022.

This weekend, Allgaier’s No. 7 Chevrolet will carry the marks of the Protect Your Melon campaign which works in conjunction with JR Motorsports teammate Ross Chastain and the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. Every year, millions of Americans are injured or killed in car crashes and the Protect Your Melon campaign helps serve as a simple reminder for people to buckle up when getting behind the wheel of a car.

Justin Allgaier

“Atlanta has certainly been very interesting for this No. 7 team since the track has gone to a more drafting-style of racing. It’s become a place where anything can, and usually does happen. Thankfully, JR Motorsports has always shown up to drafting tracks incredibly strong, and I know that we are going to have a fast Protect Your Melon Chevrolet when we hit the track on Friday. We’re ready to get out there and see what we can do.”

Sammy Smith has four NXS starts on the 1.54-mile Georgia track. He won the pole his first trip there in 2023 and followed it up with three top 10 finishes.

On speedways 1-2 miles in length, Smith has 32 starts under his belt with one win, five top fives, and 17 top 10s.

This weekend in Atlanta, Smith will debut the No. 8 Pilot Chevrolet’s new branding and colorways.

Sammy Smith

“My crew brought a fast Chevrolet to Daytona last weekend and as a whole we executed just as we should have but there are parts that we can’t control and that’s unfortunately what got us. We’re going to reset, attack the week and turn our focus towards Atlanta. I’ve had great runs there in my career and with the preparation this JR Motorsports team is doing, I expect that we’ll be in contention to bring this Pilot Chevrolet to Victory Lane where it deserves to be.”

Avg. Finish: 27

Points: 29

Connor Zilisch will compete at Atlanta for the first time in his NXS career in Saturday’s Bennett Transportation and Logistics 250, his sixth career start in the series.

Atlanta is the only 1.5-mile drafting track on the NASCAR circuit. Zilisch ran solid last weekend at Daytona, bouncing back from an incident early at Daytona to lead the race and was running among the top five in the closing laps before an accident ended his day.

Zilisch made two NXS starts on 1.5-mile tracks in 2024: Kansas Speedway and Homestead-Miami Speedway. His best finish came at Kansas, where he scored a fourth-place finish.

Connor Zilisch

“I’ve never been to Atlanta before so it’s going to be a learning experience but I’ve watched races there in the past and have been preparing with Mardy (Lindley, crew chief). It looks like a fun racetrack and I’m excited to get there and really feel it out for the first time. I learned a lot at Daytona and I’m looking forward to this weekend. There’s no practice so I’m going straight into qualifying and straight into the race which is different from what I’m used to but I know this No. 88 WeatherTech team will bring a strong car to the track which will help me feel more comfortable.”

JRM Team Updates

JR Motorsports at Atlanta Motor Speedway: JR Motorsports has competed at Atlanta Motor Speedway a combined 71 times in the NXS. In those starts at the 1.54-mile quad-oval, the organization has recorded four wins, 18 top-fives and 41 top-10s. The average finish is 12.4.

Souvenir Rig: JRM drivers Carson Kvapil, Justin Allgaier, Sammy Smith and Connor Zilisch will be signing autographs at the JR Motorsports / HMS-Byron/Bowman souvenir rig on Saturday, Feb. 22 from 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. ET.

Trans Am Hall of Fame

On Friday, February 21, the inaugural class of the Trans Am Hall of Fame will be inducted during a celebratory dinner at Sebring. The new Trans Am Hall of Fame was announced in November to honor the longest-running professional road racing series in North America. The inaugural class consists of 18 legendary drivers, team owners and series officials: John Clagett, Wally Dallenbach Jr., Mark Donohue, Chris Dyson, Ron Fellows, George Follmer, Ernie Francis Jr., Paul Gentilozzi, Dan Gurney, Parnelli Jones, Tommy Kendall, Roger Penske, Greg Pickett, Scott Pruett, Willy T. Ribbs, Jack Roush, Amy Ruman and Bob Tullius.

Three of the inductees will be on track with us this weekend: Wally Dallenbach Jr., (No. 4 Ultimate Headers Ford Mustang), Chris Dyson (No. 16 GYM WEED Ford Mustang), and Amy Ruman (No. 23 McNichols Co./Valley Automotive Group Chevrolet Corvette). Paul Gentilozzi will also be in the paddock as the owner of 3GT Racing.

Lyn St. James Named Grand Marshal

Lyn St. James will serve as the Grand Marshal for this weekend’s Sebring SpeedTour. St. James will give the command before the CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series race on Saturday, as well as Sunday’s Historic Trans Am race. An icon for women in motorsports, St. James became the first woman to win the Indianapolis 500 Rookie of The Year in 1992, ultimately making seven starts in the race. St. James was also an accomplished endurance driver, winning the 24 Hours of Daytona twice, the 12 Hours of Sebring, racing twice at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and once at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. The veteran of 53 Trans Am starts, she earned seven top-five Trans Am finishes and several IMSA GT wins. She also set 21 national and international speed records and was named one of the “Top 100 Female Athletes of the Century” by Sports Illustrated. A long-time advocate for women’s racing involvement, St. James is the co-founder of Women in Motorsports North America (WIMNA), an organization devoted to supporting opportunities for women across all disciplines of motorsports.

Make-A-Wish Foundation Guest at Sebring

Joining us in the paddock this weekend is a guest from the Make-A-Wish Foundation, who is being hosted by TA2 competitor Bob Accardo (No. 39 Make-A-Wish America/Cope Ford Mustang). On March 6, 2024, Kevin began a fight for his life with his first chemo treatment to battle Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The following six months were very tough, with severe side effects from his chemotherapy treatments. Nausea, frequent vomiting, loss of appetite, fever, and hives were just a few conditions that Kevin had to endure and overcome. In addition to the physical side effects, Kevin had to break his perfect attendance record at school, which he had maintained proudly since kindergarten. His strength and resilience prevailed, and on September 5, 2024, his prayers were answered when he received the wonderful news that he had entered remission. Now 16 years old, Kevin dreams of being a racecar driver. Kevin will be giving the command to start engines before Sunday’s TA/GT race.

Trans Am Drivers Powering Diversity

Five Trans Am Series drivers have been named recipients of the Parella Motorsports Holdings (PMH) Powering Diversity Scholarship, assisting them as they continue their careers in North America’s longest-running professional road racing series.

After winning last year’s SGT Championship, Kaylee Bryson (No. 02 Logical Systems Inc. Chevrolet Corvette) will move up to the faster XGT Class with Sam Pierce Racing. Two-time TA champion Amy Ruman (No. 23 McNichols Co./Valley Automotive Group Chevrolet Corvette) will mentor several of the younger drivers, as she once again returns to the Trans Am Series’ TA class with her family-owned Ruman Racing team. In Trans Am’s CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series, Silver Hare Racing’s Rafa Matos (No. 57 Concord American Flagpole/SHR Chevrolet Camaro) will serve as an additional mentor for the younger members of the PMH Powering Diversity Scholarship class after winning last year’s TA2 championship. Nitro Motorsports teammates Julian DaCosta (No. 30 Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang) and Tyler Gonzalez (No. 10 Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang) will both utilize support from the scholarship to fight for podiums and search for their first wins in the TA2 Series.

The racing world’s attention has been focused a few hours north of Sebring at Daytona International Speedway, where NASCAR kicked off its 2025 season with the Daytona 500 last weekend. This year, several drivers in “The Great American Race” had previous experience in the Trans Am Series, including Christopher Bell, Chase Briscoe, Austin Dillon, Ty Gibbs, Justin Haley, Riley Herbst, Tyler Reddick and Daniel Suarez. Of those competitors, Tyler Reddick, who competed in Trans Am in 2018, had the best result, finishing second in NASCAR’s biggest race.

In addition to the competitors in the Daytona 500, Trans Am alum Jesse Love won the NASCAR Xfinity Series race, and the top-seven finishers in that event all had previous experience in Trans Am. The top-three finishers in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race, which was won by Corey Heim, are also Trans Am alumni.

Past TA champions are defending title winner Paul Menard (No. 3 Pittsburgh Paints/Menards Ford Mustang), Wally Dallenbach Jr. (No. 4 Ultimate Headers Ford Mustang), Tomy Drissi (No. 8 Trench Shoring Chevrolet Camaro), Chris Dyson (No. 16 GYM WEED Ford Mustang) and Amy Ruman (No. 23 McNichols Co./Valley Automotive Group Chevrolet Corvette), while CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series champion Brent Crews (No. 70 Nitro Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro) will compete for the TA title this year. Lee Saunders (No. 84 LandSearch LLC Dodge Viper) returns to SGT as a past champion, and Chris Coffey (No. 97 Traffic Grafix/Chill Out Motorsports Maserati MC GT4) looks to defend his GT title.

Brent Crews, Nitro Motorsports Joining TA Full Time

It was recently announced that 2023 CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series champion Brent Crews (No. 70 Nitro Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro) will race full time in the TA class in 2025. Crews, who leads the TA2 class in wins since 2022 and took home two-consecutive Young Gun Awards, became the youngest Trans Am champion ever at the age of 15 years, seven months and six days old. Crews will drive for Nitro Motorsports, where he won his title in 2023. In addition to Trans Am, Crews will also be competing part-time in the ARCA Menards Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series this season.

CD Racing and 3GT Racing Bringing Pairs

For the first time since 2023, CD Racing will field be a multi-car team at Sebring. Chris Dyson will once again pilot his No. 16 GYM WEED Ford Mustang in pursuit of his fourth TA title, while Humaid Masood will get behind the wheel of the No. 21 allgram Ford Mustang, racing in Trans Am for the first time since COTA in 2022.

NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Brandon Jones will get behind the wheel of 3GT’s second car, the No. 31 Menards/Masterforce Tools Ford Mustang. Jones, who has three previous Trans Am starts and is racing in the series for the first time since 2019, will be pulling double duty this weekend, competing in Saturday’s Xfinity Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway before heading to Sebring for Sunday’s TA event.

Tomy Drissi on a Roll

Tomy Drissi enters 2025 hoping to extend a four-race podium streak, which he has held since the series visited Watkins Glen International last year. He also drives into the new season with two new partners, Trench Shoring Company and Motul, in addition to welcoming back Franklin Road Apparel. Drissi has four top-five finishes in the last five years at Sebring, with a best finish of second in 2020. Drissi’s No. 8 Trench Shoring Chevrolet Camaro will compete alongside teammate Keith Grant at Sebring, who will pilot the No. 5 Trench Shoring Chevrolet Camaro. Grant scored his first TA class podium at Sebring as a rookie in 2023, and finished fifth in last year’s event.

Drissi is also pulling double duty this weekend, competing in Historic Trans Am. He’s piloting the No. 1 Chaparral Racing Chevrolet Camaro. Driven and built by Jim Hall, Drissi’s is one of only three of these cars that were built, and the only one known to still exist.

Tracy will get behind the wheel of the No. 10 Race Cars For You Innovation IRC GT at Sebring and Road Atlanta, competing in the series for the first time in five years. The IRC team first showcased the car in open testing at VIRginia International Raceway last fall, then worked with Trans Am’s technical team to homologate the car for XGT class competition. Tracy and the team hope to expand the effort into a full-time championship run.

On a personal note, Tracy is coming into Sebring as a newlywed after marrying his wife Lisa on Valentine’s Day.

GT1 Challenge Makes Debut

Debuting in 2025 is the GT1 Challenge. The GT1 Challenge is a class that focuses on offering vehicles competing in the SCCA Club GT1 class a way to easily cross over to Pro racing in the Trans Am Series. The GT1 Challenge allows drivers to compete in a maximum of nine races per season, with their five highest points-scoring races making up their championship points total. The driver with the most points accumulated in their five best races will be recognized and awarded a championship trophy at the year-end Trans Am Awards Gala in November. The first entrant in the class is John DeGaynor, who will drive the No. 04 Speed Dream’n Racing Ford Mustang, a car previously raced by Trans Am Hall of Famer, Ron Fellows.

Matos Joins Silver Hare Racing

When the checkered flag waved at Circuit of The Americas, Rafa Matos (No. 57 Concord American Flagpole/SHR Chevrolet Camaro) became the first three-time champion in the CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series. The Brazilian driver returns to TA2 in 2025, but under a different banner. Matos joins Silver Hare Racing this season, a team he previously drove for in 2020, earning one win and six podiums in nine races. TA2’s winningest driver with 25 victories, Matos will be racing alongside new teammate Noah Harmon (No. 7 Streetside Classics/Flanagan’s Chevrolet Camaro). Harmon comes to Trans Am as an accomplished driver in the Spec MX-5 and MX-5 Cup series and is a freshman at the University of Central Florida.

Jared Odrick (No. 00 Black Underwear Ford Mustang) has moved to TRB Autosport, joining Jacob Yesnick (No. 43 McLeod/Silver Sport/Sidley LLP Ford Mustang). Odrick will once again compete in the Pro/Am Challenge, while Yesnick will pursue the National Championship. TRB Autosport also has an entry in the SGT class driven by Patrick Utt (No. 49 RaceQuip/Driven Racing Oil Chevrolet Camaro).

Hendrick Motorsports development driver Corey Day (No. 17 HendrickCars.com/SLR-M1 Chevrolet Camaro) is making his TA2 debut, as is Carson Brown (No. 8 Pay Café/Ebb Logistics/SLR-M1 Chevrolet Camaro), who was last year’s Asphalt Pro Late Model champion at Five Flag Speedway and recently won a pair of Super Late Model races at New Smyrna Speedway during Speedweeks.

G’Day to Thornburrow

Australian driver Edan Thornburrow is making his CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series debut this weekend, driving the No. 15 Owosso Speedway Ford Mustang for Adrian Wlostowski’s F.A.S.T. Auto Racing. Although this will be his first time racing in TA2 stateside, he has 72 starts in the Australian TA2 National Series, with a best finish of second in the championship standings in 2021. The 21-year-old, who plans to compete in about half the races this season, is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Nathan Herne and Matthew Brabham, who have both found success in the Trans Am Series in the United States. Thornburrow, who was named the 2019 Motorsport Australia Young Driver of the Year, was the 2018 and 2019 Porsche 944 Champion, and won the Toyota 86 Racing title in 2019 and 2021 in his home country. Thornburrow hails from Concord West, New South Wales near Sydney.

16 drivers are entered this weekend in the Pro/Am Challenge, the TA2 race-within-a-race which allows drivers to take their nine best finishes and compete for a championship. 2024 Pro/Am Challenge champion Barry Boes (No. 27 Accio Data/SLR-M1 Chevrolet Camaro) returns to the class, as do other 2025 race winners Keith Prociuk (No. 9 HP Tuners/Cope Race Cars Ford Mustang), Tom Sheehan (No. 97 Vixen Cycle Co./LTK/Cope Ford Mustang) and Jared Odrick (No. 00 Black Underwear Ford Mustang). New to the program—and the series—this year are Jordan Menzin (No. 18 Performance Tech Motorsports Ford Mustang), Maciej Tuniewicz (No. 29 New Granite & Marble/F.A.S.T. Auto Ford Mustang), Will Robinson (No. 51 DPS Racing LLC/Cope Cars Ford Mustang) and Matt Griffin (No. 67 Griffin Concrete Construction Chevrolet Camaro). After an incredibly tight points hunt last year, the large field means the Pro/Am Challenge will only get more competitive in 2025.

TA2 News & Notes

This year we say ‘Hola!’ to Valentin Aguirre (No. 12 Memo Corse/CAN/Elf Oil Ford Mustang), from Arrecifes, Argentina.

Adam Andretti will be pulling double duty this weekend, competing in both Saturday’s TA2 race and Sunday’s TA/GT race. On Saturday, Andretti will pilot the No. 41 Ultimate Headers Chevrolet Camaro, and on Sunday, he will be behind the wheel of the No. 17 Top Liner Chevrolet Camaro.

Kyle Busch to make 15th Truck start at Atlanta

Photo by Chad Wells for SpeedwayMedia.com.

Kyle Busch is scheduled to make his first of five NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series starts of the 2025 season this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

For the event, Busch, a two-time Cup Series champion from Las Vegas, Nevada, will be piloting the No. 7 Chevrolet Silverado RST entry for Spire Motorsports with veteran crew chief Brian Pattie calling the shots atop the pit box. The Truck Series race at Atlanta will mark Busch’s first of two NASCAR national touring series starts that he will be making this upcoming weekend. He will also pilot his regular ride, the No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet entry in the Cup Series division on Sunday, February 23.

As Busch enters Atlanta to bid for a victory against the Truck Series’ regulars on Saturday, February 22, he will do so with a unique milestone up for grabs. By competing in this weekend’s event at Atlanta, he will make his 15th Truck start at the track.

Busch made his first Truck start at Atlanta in October 2005, driving the No. 15 Chevrolet entry for Billy Ballew Motorsports. During the event, Busch, who led 45 laps, was racing in second place behind Jack Sprague when a late-race caution flew with eight laps remaining. During the caution period, Busch pitted for four fresh tires and lined up within the top-10 mark prior to a three-lap shootout. Meanwhile, Sprague was among several competitors who opted to remain on the track and not pit for any fresh tires.

Once the event restarted under green flag conditions, Busch quickly carved his way up to third place with four fresh tires before the final lap. Busch closed in on Sprague through the backstretch after rocketing past Johnny Benson Jr. through the first two turns. Then entering the final turn, he used the draft and the tires to move up to the outside lane to draw even with Sprague.

As Sprague tried to move up the track to block Busch, they made contact, resulting in Sprague getting sideways and spinning. Sprague was then hit by Bobby Labonte as both veered back into the outside wall hard. Amid the final-lap carnage, Busch, who got squeezed towards the outside wall as Sprague spun, managed to muscle away and cross the finish line in first place to claim a thrilling victory. The first Atlanta Truck victory for Busch would mark his third win of the 2005 season and the third of his career.

Busch’s 2005 Truck Atlanta victory would mark the first of three consecutive wins in three appearances at the track in the series, where his next victory occurred in October 2007 after he led a race-high 65 of 130 laps. Five months later, he led 39 of 130 laps en route to his third consecutive Atlanta victory in March 2008.

During both victories, he drove the No. 51 entry for Billy Ballew Motorsports. Busch’s attempt to win in four consecutive Truck appearances at Atlanta fell short as he settled in eighth place during his fourth series start in October 2008. Nonetheless, he claimed a fourth victory at Atlanta five months later in March 2009. By then, he increased his win column in the Truck Series division to 11.

Beginning in 2010, Busch competed for his own-operated Truck Series team, Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM). By then, Atlanta reduced its Truck Series schedule to field only a single series’ event on an annual basis. During Busch’s first three Atlanta events as a driver/owner between 2010 to 2012, he led a combined 104 laps and notched three consecutive podium results (one third-place finish in 2011 and two second-place finishes in 2010 and 2012).

Between 2013 to 2016, Busch would not compete in the Truck Series event at Atlanta before he returned in 2017. During the latter event, he led 25 laps until a flat right front sent Busch’s No. 51 Toyota entry into the Turn 1 outside wall amid a restart with 18 laps remaining. Ultimately, Busch would pit under green and drop back to 26th place in the final running order while his teammate, Christopher Bell, proceeded to win and record KBM’s first-ever victory at Atlanta.

Then in 2018, he led a race-high 67 laps until he encountered a pit road miscue before an overtime shootout. During the pit stop with two laps left, Busch was initially pitting for four fresh tires. When his pit service was going slow due to the front-tire changer encountering issues getting the tire on Busch’s No. 4 Toyota entry, the latter made a last-minute decision to exit his pit stall to retain the lead. Amid the right-front tire issue, however, the rear tire changer had already loosened the lug nuts of the left-rear wheel from Busch’s entry. Shortly after exiting pit road, the wheel then rolled off of the truck and Busch was forced to reverse back into his pit stall for the wheel. As a result, he ended up in 21st place.

Following a two-year difficult stretch, Busch would emerge triumphant in 2019 after he muscled away from teammate Harrison Burton during a five-lap shootout to the finish and beat Johnny Sauter by nearly a full second. With his fifth Truck victory at Atlanta, Busch achieved his first win at the track in his KBM equipment and he notched his 52nd Truck career victory overall, which allowed him to surpass Ron Hornaday Jr. in becoming the winningest competitor in the series.

The following season, Busch, who made his 12th Truck start at Atlanta, led 37 laps and had completed a green-flag pit service from the lead with 33 laps remaining. Shortly after exiting pit road, his race was spoiled went up the racetrack and made contact with the outside wall through Turns 3 and 4 while trying to avoid hitting the lapped competitor of Jordan Anderson. Having been penalized for speeding on pit road in the process, Busch served a drive-through penalty through pit road with 30 laps remaining and would settle in 21st place in the final running order. He rallied in 2021 by leading all but 28 of 130 scheduled laps as he notched his sixth Truck victory at Atlanta. The victory would mark his 60th in the series and the final time he would pilot a KBM entry to a win at Atlanta.

This past season, Busch returned to Atlanta in the Truck Series amid a two-year hiatus as he piloted the No. 7 Chevrolet Silverado RST entry for his first of five starts with Spire Motorsports. By then, he had sold KBM to Spire. During the event, Busch led 33 of 135 laps and was racing in second place behind Grant Enfinger with seven laps remaining when he made his move beneath Enfinger and assumed the lead through the first two turns. As Enfinger made a late pit stop to address a flat tire, Busch would fend off Ty Majeski, Corey Heim and Taylor Gray over the final seven laps to notch his first victory driving for Spire and claim his seventh Truck victory at Atlanta. The victory would also mark the 65th of his career and his first driving a Chevrolet since he won at Phoenix Raceway in November 2007.

Through 14 previous Truck starts at Atlanta, Busch has recorded seven victories, 10 top-five results, 11 top-10 results, 651 laps led and an average-finishing result of 6.4. With seven victories, Busch holds the most victories in the Truck division at Atlanta as he strives to extend his winning mark to eight in 2025. To date, Busch remains the winningest competitor in the Truck Series division with 66 victories through 175 starts.

This upcoming weekend at Atlanta, Busch will be one of four competitors representing Spire Motorsports as the latter will compete alongside Michael McDowell, Rajah Caruth and rookie Andres Perez de Lara. Busch is also set to become the third competitor to pilot Spire’s No. 7 Chevrolet entry in this year’s Truck season. This past weekend, Justin Haley piloted the entry for the season-opening event at Daytona International Speedway. Corey Day, a development competitor for Hendrick Motorsports, will then drive the No. 7 entry in eight events, beginning at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in March.

Following Atlanta, Busch’s next Truck start of the 2025 season is scheduled to occur at North Wilkesboro Speedway on May 17, where he will be piloting Spire Motorsports’ No. 07 Chevrolet entry. The Las Vegas native will then drive Spire’s No. 7 entry for the second and final time of this season the following weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 23 before he returns to the No. 07 entry for his final two-scheduled starts at Nashville Superspeedway on May 30 and at Watkins Glen International on August 8. During the events in which Busch drives the No. 07 entry, he will be receiving support from crew chief Allen Hart.

The remainder of Spire Motorsports’ driver lineup for its Nos. 07 and 7 “all-star” entries for the 2025 season remain to be determined.

Kyle Busch’s first start of the 2025 Craftsman Truck Series season is scheduled to occur this upcoming Saturday, February 22, at Atlanta Motor Speedway for the Fr8 208. The event’s broadcast time is scheduled to commence at 1:30 p.m. ET on FS1.

Power, Newgarden Push Penske to Top of Sebring Test

SEBRING, Fla. (Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2025) – After an uncharacteristically quiet opening day, Team Penske roared to the top of the overall speed charts Tuesday during the finale of an NTT INDYCAR SERIES Group Test at Sebring International Raceway.

Series champions and Indianapolis 500 winners Will Power and Josef Newgarden ended up 1-2 for the fabled team and overall in the two-day test, which served as final preparations for all 27 full-time drivers before the season-opening Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg presented by RP Funding on Sunday, March 2 on the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida (noon ET, FOX, FOX Deportes, INDYCAR Radio Network).

Power was quickest today and overall with a lap of 52.2549 seconds in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet, followed by Newgarden at 52.3191 in the No. 2 PPG Team Penske Chevrolet. Both laps were completed in the cooler morning session, when seven of the 10 quickest laps of the two-day session were turned. The field was split into morning and afternoon groups both days on the 1.67-mile “short course” at the historic circuit in Central Florida.

“It’s funny, after a couple days back in the car, you feel right at home, back to the same old stuff, and going through the same old changes and just confirming stuff,” Power said. “I know it so well now, but it always changes. It’s never the same. So, you’ve got to be on your toes, super-tight field.”

Less than eight-tenths of a second separated the entire 27-car field over two days of testing.

The results for Team Penske today were a contrast from Monday, when Power was the quickest for the team in seventh at 52.8032, more than four-tenths of a second behind the day’s leader, Pato O’Ward of Arrow McLaren at 52.3470.

O’Ward’s leading time from Monday still placed him third overall on the combined speed chart. His best lap today was 52.7060 in the No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet.

Marcus Armstrong’s afternoon session-leading time Monday of 52.3675 stood up as fourth overall in the No. 60 SiriusXM Honda of Meyer Shank Racing normally driven by Felix Rosenqvist, who was ill Monday. Rosenqvist was back behind the wheel of the No. 60 machine Tuesday and was ninth overall at 52.5273.

Colton Herta ended up fifth overall with his lap this morning of 52.3818 in the No. 26 Gainbridge Honda of Andretti Global. Nolan Siegel helped Arrow McLaren join Team Penske with two drivers in the top six as he clocked in at sixth overall at 52.4405 with his top lap this morning in the No. 6 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet.

Three-time and two-time defending series champion Alex Palou was seventh overall at 52.4948 with his best lap Monday in the No. 10 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda.

Series newcomer PREMA Racing, which has dominated global junior open-wheel racing, finished its first Group Test on an encouraging note. Series veteran Callum Ilott ended up eighth overall at 52.4998 in the team’s No. 90 Chevrolet.

A challenging test for Scott Dixon ended with the six-time series champion at 13th overall in the 27-driver field at 52.6120 with his best lap this morning in the No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda.

Dixon only turned two laps Monday due to a mechanical problem, and he crashed into the barriers in Turn 6 approximately 15 minutes into the morning session today. His car suffered minor rear damage, and Dixon was unhurt and returned to testing.

Cole Custer Looks Ahead to Atlanta

Ford Performance Notes and Quotes
NASCAR Cup Series
Atlanta Midweek Media Availability | Tuesday, February 18, 2025

Cole Custer, driver of the No. 41 HaasTooling.com Ford Mustang Dark Horse for Haas Factory Team in the NASCAR Cup Series, was battling for the win in Sunday’s Daytona 500 before getting involved in an accident coming to the checkered flag. The result was a 21st-place finish, which he spoke about to the media this afternoon.

COLE CUSTER, No. 41 HaasTooling.com Ford Mustang Dark Horse – HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT GOING FROM ONE SPEEDWAY RACE IN DAYTONA TO ANOTHER ONE THIS WEEKEND IN ATLANTA? “It was a great start for our team at Haas Factory racing. It was a great way to start off the year having both Xfinity cars have a shot at the win and having a Cup car have a shot at the win. It doesn’t get much better than that. I can’t say enough about our people and how hard they’ve worked over the offseason and to see them get rewarded and have a shot to win races is a great way to start. Hopefully, we can just keep it going and have another shot at it at Atlanta.”

HAVE YOU HEARD ANY COMMENTS FROM DENNY HAMLIN’S PODCAST? “I have not. I’ve been trying this year to totally stay off social media for the most part, so I have not listened to Denny’s podcast. I’ve heard some rumors, I guess you could say about it, but I haven’t actually heard it.”

TO PARAPHRASE, HE FELT YOU COULD HAVE WAITED LONGER TO MAKE THE MOVE. LOOKING BACK, DO YOU HAVE ANY DIFFERENT THOUGHTS THAN YOUR INITIAL REACTION? “Even when we got out of the car and I saw Denny right after, I told him, ‘Yeah, I feel like I should have waited for the frontstretch.’ There were definitely things that made me want to take that run on the backstretch because I got such a big run from the 19 pushing me, and I was probably a couple car lengths back of Denny at the time. I just tried to take the run. It was the last lap. I tried to take it. I knew I probably should have waited for the frontstretch, but it’s one of those things that you learn for the next time, and then also having the 35 spin out on the frontstretch, it was kind of like, ‘Oh, man. These guys are all wrecking. You’ve got to get to the lead now.’ So, you just didn’t feel like you had a second to waste, but, looking back at it, I definitely would agree that I wish I had waited for the frontstretch to give myself a little better shot at it. With the wreck, I think at the end of the day it’s three or four guys trying to go for the same place at the same time. Us and the 11 sidedrafting and then the 19 ended up hitting me in the left-rear and turning me into Denny, but I don’t really fault anybody for that. I feel like everybody is just trying to side draft and push and trying to win the Daytona 500. I was happy we had a shot to win and hopefully we can keep it rolling.”

DO YOU FEEL YOU EARNED SOME RESPECT WHEN YOU’RE TRYING TO WIN THE DAYTONA 500? “At the end of the day we’re all competitors. We’re gonna go out there and race as hard as we can and these superspeedway races come down to pushing and shoving and side drafting, so I think you see wrecks every single speedway race and usually they’re on the last lap. At the end of the day, it’s everybody trying to go for the same spot at the same time. I wish I made the move on the frontstretch, but I’m not gonna regret anything.”

DO YOU THINK YOU EXPRESSED YOURSELF WELL WITH DENNY AND IT’S FINE? “Yeah, he was a little bit frustrated when he first came up, but I just told him I needed to see a replay. There are so many people that are hitting each other on those last laps and how it all comes together, so I made sure I saw a replay before I really had a great opinion on anything, but, yeah, I felt like we were both calm about it. I think we were both frustrated we didn’t win, but it was a calm conversation after.”

HOW DO YOU WALK OUT OF DAYTONA AND HEAD TO ATLANTA? WHAT’S YOUR MINDSET? “Hopefully have another shot at it. I feel like our team did a great job adjusting on our car throughout the day and communicating to try and make things better and that put us in a situation to have a shot to win at the end, so we just have to go there with the same mindset and try and be there at the front.”

DID YOU LOOK AT THE CHRISTOPHER BELL INCIDENT? “I looked back at that one, too, and Christopher actually texted me on Monday and he was like, ‘Yeah, my car just couldn’t really take a push that great all day.’ So, there weren’t really any hard feelings it seems like there. I mean, if I was gonna do it again, I wish I got just a tick more square on him. Maybe that would have helped it, but it sounded like he was kind of chasing his car a little bit all day, so it just wasn’t the best situation. When it’s five to go, you’re gonna have to push and shove. It is what it is. You try and help the guy as much as you can out front and there are definitely things I can learn from that to try and make it better, but I hated it because, honestly, I think that was the first time I ever wrecked anybody on a superspeedway off my bumper. I felt horrible after it happened, but when you look back at it, it sounds like he was kind of chasing his car a little bit.”

HOW HAS THE APPROACH CHANGED NOT HAVING TEAMMATES OUT THERE ANYMORE? “I think at the end of the day on the superspeedways the Fords work really well together, so that’s always been a plus for us, and then also having an alliance with RFK has been huge. It’s been great working with them, so I think just building off that and at the end of the day you just try and have a good handling car at Atlanta and try and have a car that you can be aggressive with and have some speed. Hopefully we can just get up there and try to control lanes.”

HOW HARD HAS IT BEEN TO ACCLIMATE BACK TO THE CUP CAR? “There’s definitely little things like trying to get used to the mirrors and just your whole surroundings in general, but it’s been pretty solid so far and nothing too crazy. I have a great team around me and just have to keep building it.”

HAVE YOU SEEN RACING AT DAYTONA OR SUPERSPEEDWAY RACING IN GENERAL CHANGE BETWEEN THE OLDER VERSION OF THE CAR AND THE NEXT GEN CAR TODAY? “For sure. Yeah. The second the Next Gen car came out it seemed like there was a lot more pushing, a lot more shoving. It’s very hard to get the third lane to work, so that leaves you with two lanes and everybody pushing and shoving in those two lanes because they can’t go anywhere else. It’s created more chaos, I would say, just from the pushing standpoint. I would say that’s the biggest thing.”

WHEN IT COMES TO SUCCESS AT DAYTONA, IS IT MORE LUCK BASED, PERFORMANCE BASED OR A COMBINATION? “It’s kind of a 50/50 if I was to guess a number. You have to be at the right place at the right time. You look at the 24 and he ended up winning the race and he wasn’t in the first two rows on that last lap, so you have to be at the right place at the right time, but, at the same time, you have to do everything right as the driver and as a team on your pit stops, how you work the draft, when to take risk and when to kind of save your car, so there’s a lot that goes into it, but being at the right place at the right time has a lot to do with it also.”

WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN CHANGE WITH THE TEAM AND WHAT HAVE YOU HAD TO GET USED TO AGAIN WITH THE TEAM AS A WHOLE GOING FROM XFINITY TO CUP? “I think the biggest thing for me is how much I’ve changed in the last couple of years, just knowing how much better to work with your team to try and fix problems and things like that because usually race weekends do not go perfect. Usually, there’s always something you’ve got to fix, something you’ve got to make better and the teams that can go in the right direction and fix those things tend to be better. The driver is a huge part of that and how they communicate with their team, so I think that’s one of the biggest things, and just having the confidence to know you can go out there and compete with the best of them.”

YOU HAVE BEEN IN RACES WHERE CAUTION HAS BEEN THROWN ON THE LAST LAP AND WHEN IT HASN’T. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THAT SCENARIO AS A COMPETITOR? “If I was to give my opinion, usually what they’ve said in the past is if there’s heavy impacts, they’re gonna throw the caution. Like Riley’s, when he kind of just spun or slid to the inside, I understand that not being a caution, but probably with how big that wreck was on the backstretch I would expect a caution because you never know if somebody is gonna get hurt or what’s gonna happen. Unfortunately, it’s kind of the world we live in on superspeedways that they’re probably more so gonna end under caution than anything because the pushing and shoving is so extreme, but at the end of the day you have to think about the safety first. When people make that big of an impact, the caution should probably come out.”

HOW BIG OF AN IMPACT WAS IT? “It was fairly big. When the 11, I think, came up the track and then maybe it was the 51 that came back up the track too. We all hit each other and you’re in the wall. It’s definitely a somewhat heavy impact and you just never know, so I think, at the end of the day, if you see guys hitting the wall and having pretty big impacts, yeah, I mean the caution should come out and you also don’t want people barreling through that wreck, too. When guys are just sliding across the track you could t-bone somebody or something, so that’s just my point of view from a driver.”

HOW IS IT WORKING WITH A CREW CHIEF YOU HAVEN’T WORKED BEFORE AT THESE TWO TRACKS? IS IT EASIER ON A NEW DRIVER/CREW CHIEF RELATIONSHIP OR HARDER? “I think it’s honestly a good way to ease into that kind of relationship just because you have a little bit bigger window on hitting your balance and how it all plays out with the handling of the cars. I think Aaron has done a great job and obviously giving me a shot to go win a race at the end of the Daytona 500. I can’t really ask for much more and they worked so hard this week. It was incredible the amount of work they did on that car because after the Duels, pretty much every single body panel had to be replaced, and the floor and the splitter. We had to take the engine out. It was a lot of work and for them to still give me a car that could go compete definitely shows what we can do.”

IS THE WAY YOU ADVANCE AT ATLANTA AND MANEUVER IN THE TRAFFIC DIFFERENT THAN DAYTONA OR NOT? “Yes and no. It seems like it can get that way, where you kind of just run double file and it’s hard to pass, but, at the same time, there’s a lot more handling involved in Atlanta, so one guy can be handling good and then you get a lot of pressure on them and you’re trying to make moves around them, so just the handling side of that really changes the racing at Atlanta a lot of the time, but it is still drafting. You’re gonna try and draft and try and make moves on other guys.”

DOES IT MAKE YOU HOLD YOUR BREATH FOR A SECOND WHEN YOU SEE A WRECK LIKE PREECE’S AT DAYTONA? DO YOU THINK MORE ABOUT IT? “I don’t know if you think about it as a driver, I guess, but it catches your attention for sure. After the race I didn’t even know he flipped until after when I saw it. I was like, ‘Oh, man. That was big. I hope he’s OK.’ Nobody wants to see cars flip over as a driver.”

AirMedCare Network To Serve as Primary Partner for Corey LaJoie at Atlanta

America’s Largest Air Ambulance Membership Network Joins Rick Ware Racing

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Feb. 18, 2025) – AirMedCare Network, a division of Global Medical Response and America’s largest air ambulance membership network, has joined Rick Ware Racing (RWR) for this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The company will serve as the primary partner for driver Corey LaJoie and the No. 01 team in the Ambetter Health 400.

LaJoie and the No. 01 AirMedCare Network Ford Mustang Dark Horse will take to the track for the first time on Saturday when qualifying begins at 11 a.m. EST. After a fast lap around Atlanta’s 1.54-mile oval, LaJoie will slot in for Sunday’s Ambetter Health 400, which goes green at 3 p.m. with live coverage on FOX and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

“We’ve been a partner of Corey’s for several years now, and we’re looking forward to seeing him carry the colors of AirMedCare Network this weekend at Atlanta,” said Matt Muse, vice president of membership sales, AirMedCare Network. “Corey has been a great advocate for AMCN’s air ambulance membership program, and this opportunity at Atlanta provides an excellent platform for us to tell our story and explain the membership benefits of AirMedCare Network.”

AirMedCare Network membership brings financial peace of mind. For $99 per year, an entire household can be protected. In the event of a serious medical emergency, AirMedCare Network’s air ambulance providers transport everyone in need of care, regardless of membership status or ability to pay. Members have the added benefit of no out-of-pocket costs associated with their transport when flown by a network provider. Another benefit of an air ambulance membership with AirMedCare Network is its expansive reach, with more than 320 locations across 38 states. “AirMedCare Network has been a NASCAR partner for several years and we’ve been working with them to help grow their membership,” LaJoie said. “Atlanta marks AirMedCare Network’s first race as a primary partner, and we’re proud to be a part of their expanded marketing efforts in NASCAR.”

LaJoie has proven to be a good bet at Atlanta. The 33-year-old racer from Charlotte, North Carolina, has regularly placed himself among the leaders at Atlanta since the track was reconfigured ahead of the 2022 season. In the six races on the new layout, LaJoie has scored four top-15 finishes. Among them are two top-fives, including a fourth-place drive in the 2023 Ambetter Health 400 that earned LaJoie his career-best NASCAR Cup Series result.

“Atlanta is probably one of the most mentally and physically exhausting races because the track’s banked a lot, you’re pulling a lot of G’s in the middle of the corner, and it’s a chess match trying to position yourself in the right spot at the right time,” LaJoie said. “And the physical load on your body is one of the highest on the schedule, so it’s definitely a test of your mental and physical acuity.”

About Rick Ware Racing:

Rick Ware has been a motorsports mainstay for more than 40 years. It began at age 6 when the third-generation racer began his driving career and has since spanned four wheels and two wheels on both asphalt and dirt. Competing in the SCCA Trans Am Series and other road-racing divisions led Ware to NASCAR in the early 1980s, where he finished third in his NASCAR debut – the 1983 Warner W. Hodgdon 300 NASCAR Grand American race at Riverside (Calif.) International Raceway. More than a decade later, injuries would force Ware out of the driver’s seat and into fulltime team ownership. In 1995, Rick Ware Racing was formed, and with wife Lisa by his side, Ware has since built his eponymous organization into an entity that competes fulltime in the elite NASCAR Cup Series while simultaneously campaigning successful teams in the Top Fuel class of the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series, Progressive American Flat Track and FIM World Supercross Championship (WSX).
