A TUMS’ “Fights back fast” MOMENT
(For each of the 36 races during the 2011 Sprint Cup season, TUMS will provide a brief historical recap of a moment when a team fought back to overcome an obstacle, one that can easily be described as a TUMS “Fights Back Fast” Moment. As this is Kentucky Speedway’s first Sprint Cup race, TUMS is highlighting a Camping World Truck Series moment).
late-race spin set Todd Bodine up for a winning come back
The date was Sept. 3, 2010. NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion Todd Bodine proved that a driver can spin late in a race to come back to win.
NOTE: TUMS is the sponsor of the TUMS Fast Relief 500, the seventh race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup, at Martinsville Speedway on October 30.
While trying to pass Kyle Busch for the lead on lap 81 of the 150-lap race, Bodine spun his Germain Racing Toyota in front of the field. A trip to pit road repaired the minor damage, but he would have to fight his way through traffic after restarting 25th.
On Lap 82 of the 150-lap race, Bodine and Kyle Busch were battling for the race lead when Bodine spun out at the exit of turn four, flat-spotting the tires on the No. 30 Toyota.
That forced Bodine to pit for fuel and fresh rubber, which at the time seemed like it would doom him to a poor finish. But he was able to stay on track for the rest of the race, while Busch and the other leaders had to pit in the closing laps for much-needed fuel. On lap 137, Bodine passed pole winner Austin Dillon for the lead and was in command the final 14 laps.
Busch finished seventh, closing a four-race win streak.
Despite the pain of a late-race spin, Bodine fought back fast, similar to TUMS, to capture a victory.
