No. 38 Great Clips Chevrolet News and Notes

Kahne at Phoenix International Raceway: By the numbers… In five NNS starts at Phoenix International Raceway (PIR), Kahne’s best performance is a sixth-place finish back in 2007, which was his last NNS start at the one-mile track. Additionally, he has one pole (2005) and 45 laps led to his credit.

In NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) competition, Kahne visited victory lane in his last stop at PIR last November. He also owns two top-five and five top-10 finishes.

Great Clips Announcement at PIR… Great Clips will hold a press conference on Saturday at 10:20am in the media center at PIR to make a special announcement.

Who’s on the pit box? Turner Motorsports welcomes Mike Shiplett to the team in 2012. Shiplett will have a unique role in 2012 as he calls the shots for both a veteran (Kahne) and a rookie (Brad Sweet). It is a reunion of sorts for Kahne and Shiplett, who were paired together in the NNS during the 2007 season and put down impressive results including two victories (Charlotte Motor Speedway and Bristol Motor Speedway, spring events).

This Week’s Impala… The No. 38 team will unload chassis #319 this weekend at PIR. This is a brand new chassis in the Turner Motorsports stable.

First of Many in 2012… Turner Motorsports teammate James Buescher secured his first NASCAR victory last Saturday in the DRIVE4COPD 300 at Daytona International Speedway.  This is the fourth NNS victory for the second-year team, with the others coming last season at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Road America and Chicagoland Speedway.

Kahne and Sweet: a unique combination… Not only are Kahne and Sweet good friends off the track, but the veteran is serving as mentor to Sweet as he makes the transition from open-wheel competition to stock cars. Sweet was handpicked by Kahne in 2008 to drive for Kasey Kahne Racing (KKR) where he has since experienced tremendous success in the World of Outlaws Series. Sweet will continue to compete on a limited basis for KKR when he is not behind the wheel of the No. 38 Great Clips machine in the NNS. You can expect Kahne to be very involved and present in the NNS garage when Sweet is behind the wheel of the No. 38 as he will closely monitor his progress and offer encouragement.

Kahne brought Great Clips their first win! From 2003-2005, Kahne and his sponsor, Great Clips, Inc., reached momentous milestones, including capturing Kahne’s first Nationwide Series victory in 2003 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. It was also Great Clips’ first win as a primary sponsor. In 2005, Kahne captured his second career win at Texas Motor Speedway before leaving the Nationwide Series to allow more time for his Sprint Cup Series efforts.

Great Clips goes racing with the World of Outlaws in 2012! Great Clips will serve as sponsor for KKR driver Joey Saldana for the 2012 World of Outlaws season. The Minneapolis-based company has been a sponsor of KKR for the past two seasons. This year, they will be featured on all three KKR entries – as a primary sponsor on the #9 with Saldana as well as associate sponsor placement on Brad Sweet’s #49 and Cody Darrah’s #5 World of Outlaws cars.

12 Years and Counting… Great Clips, Inc. is currently the longest-running sponsor in the NNS and has used the Nationwide Series as their primary marketing platform for the last 11 years. Their sponsorship began in 2000 with Akins Motorsports as they climbed on board to sponsor the team’s No. 38 entry with driver, Christian Elder. Mark Green piloted the No. 38 for one season before general manager, Doug Stringer, hired up-and-coming talent, Kasey Kahne, thereby solidifying Great Clips commitment to their NASCAR sponsorship.

Kahne on heading west to PIR

“I can’t wait to get out to Phoenix and get on the track with this Great Clips team! Last weekend at Daytona, we had such an awesome car. It was fast and the handling balance was pretty close to perfect. I think we had a good shot at the win but that’s just Daytona for you. It’s when you leave Daytona and get to a place like Phoenix where teams can really see what they’ve got.”

Weekend Rewind: Daytona – Justin Allgaier and the No. 31 BRANDT team made an unfortunate early exit in the season-opening race at Daytona International Speedway last weekend. After starting 12th, Allgaier was caught up in a multi-car accident on lap 103 and relegated to a 33rd-place finish. He is ranked 21st in the driver point standings, with hopes of improving upon that mark this weekend in Phoenix.

Allgaier at Phoenix International Raceway – Allgaier will make his eighth career NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) start at the one-mile Phoenix International Raceway (PIR) this weekend. In seven previous attempts, Allgaier has scored four top-10 finishes with an average start of 15.1 and average finish of 10.4. He scored his career-best finish of eighth on three occasions: spring 2009, fall 2010 and spring 2011.

Allgaier Makes Stop Before Heading to Phoenix – Before getting on track at PIR on Friday, Allgaier will be stopping at the Golf Industry Show (GIS) on behalf of team sponsor, BRANDT on Wednesday afternoon. At the event, held in the Las Vegas Convention Center, Allgaier will spend time in the BRANDT booth and sign autographs for GIS attendees.

Celebrating Their Anniversary – Allgaier and wife Ashley will celebrate their six-year wedding anniversary on March 4, 2012. Married in Allgaier’s hometown of Riverton, Illinois, the couple plans to stop at the Grand Canyon to celebrate the day while en route to Las Vegas, NV for the NNS race the following weekend.

First of Many in 2012 – Turner Motorsports teammate James Buescher secured his first NASCAR victory last Saturday in the DRIVE4COPD 300 at Daytona International Speedway. This is the fourth NNS victory for the second-year team, with the others coming last season at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Road America and Chicagoland Speedway.

This Week’s Impala – This weekend, Allgaier will pilot TMS-320 in the Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 at Phoenix International Raceway. Like last weekend’s car, this is a brand new chassis for the Jimmy Elledge-led No. 31 team.

Allgaier on heading out west to Phoenix:

“This BRANDT team is definitely ready to get out west and put Daytona in the rear-view mirror. Even though I love racing there, it is always kind of a crap shoot, and we just fell victim to circumstances for sure. My guys continue to work hard on making sure our car is fast right off the hauler and I want to make sure I’m holding up my end of the bargain by getting us a positive result. I’ve been fortunate to have some solid and consistent finishes at Phoenix and I’m hopeful we can repeat that this weekend. I really enjoy racing there and so I don’t see why we can’t.”
