RICHMOND, Va. – Governor Robert McDonnell has officially recognized April 26 as Denny Hamlin Foundation Day.
“’I am grateful to Governor McDonnell for his gracious support and recognition of the Foundation,” Hamlin said. “By extension, this also recognizes the doctors, scientists, volunteers and others who continue to care for those afflicted by cystic fibrosis, as well as chronically ill children with other debilitating illnesses.”
The Governor’s Certificate of Recognition reads:
“WHEREAS, Denny Hamlin, a native of Chesterfield County, Virginia, and current NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver, has been racing to support the fight against cystic fibrosis since he was seven years old; and
“WHEREAS, he established the Denny Hamlin Foundation to focus primarily on raising awareness and funding for the specific needs of individuals afflicted with cystic fibrosis and to support organizations whose purpose is to research treatment and to provide care for individuals with cystic fibrosis; and
“WHEREAS, all newborns in the Commonwealth of Virginia are screened for this disease at birth to enable early diagnosis and treatment; and
“WHEREAS, advances in research and treatments have extended the expected life span for persons with cystic fibrosis into their 30s, 40s, or 50s; and
“WHEREAS, the Denny Hamlin Foundation will also support chronically ill children with other debilitating illnesses; and
“WHEREAS, this year is the fifth annual “Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown” at the Richmond International Raceway, and proceeds will benefit the Denny Hamlin Foundation and children in Virginia with cystic fibrosis;
“NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert F. McDonnell, do hereby recognize the DENNY HAMLIN FOUNDATION on this day, April 26, 2012, in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of our citizens.”
