T. Wayne Robertson Memorial Golf Tournament Benefits Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma

NASCAR Owner Richard Childress to Play in Tournament

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Oct. 28, 2013) – The seventh annual T. Wayne Robertson Memorial Golf Tournament hosted by WSJS and ESPN Radio will be held Monday, October 28 at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons, N.C., and will benefit the Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma. NASCAR owner Richard Childress will attend.

“The T. Wayne Robertson Memorial Golf Tournament is an event I attend every year and the Childress Institute is privileged to receive the proceeds,” said Childress, president and CEO of Richard Childress Racing and co-founder of the Childress Institute. “T. Wayne was a special person who did a great deal in the world of motorsports but, more importantly, he did so much more for the community in which he lived. Having this golf tournament in his name continues the incredible legacy of giving and living life to the fullest he left for us all to follow.”

The T. Wayne Robertson Memorial Golf Classic honors the life of one of the most influential figures in motor sports history and a NASCAR Hall of Fame nominee. As a true fan of the sport and with genuine affection for people, T. Wayne began his career as a Winston Cup show car driver for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Some 28 years later, through many years of enjoyment, hard work, and natural marketing talent, he was proud to be at the helm of Sports Marketing Enterprises, a division of RJR.

“I can’t imagine a better way to celebrate my father’s life than continuing to give back to the community he loved and supported,” said Toby Robertson, T. Wayne’s son and founder of Specialized Mobile Exhibits. “The T. Wayne Memorial Golf Classic is a way to keep his memory alive as well as give back to a deserving local cause, Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma. If dad was alive today, there is no doubt he would support his friend Richard Childress in his endeavor as he always showed tremendous compassion in helping children.”

The day at Tanglewood Park will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the clubhouse with registration, brunch and a silent auction. The shotgun start of the captain’s choice tournament, on both the Championship and Reynolds courses, is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. with dinner and the awards ceremony scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Participation is $150 per player or $500 per four-person team.

The Childress Institute’s goal is to lead national efforts to reduce death and disability following injury to children less than 18 years of age. It is dedicated to improving outcomes for critically-injured children across the U.S. by investing resources in research, education and awareness. The Institute helps injured kids get the best care, when they need it the most.

The Childress Institute is proud to be supported by the T. Wayne Robertson Memorial Fund. This generous support is particularly meaningful given the close relationship and mutual respect shared by Robertson and Childress. They grew up together in NASCAR, each having come from humble beginnings, and never forgot the importance of giving back to others.
