SMITHLEY IN TOP 20 AT RIR

RICHMOND, Va. – Garrett Smithley scored his best finish of the Xfinity Series season Saturday, rolling home 20th in the ToyotaCare 250 at Richmond International Raceway.

Smithley qualified 26th in the JD Motorsports with Gary Keller Chevrolet and raced as high as 17th before scoring his first top-20 run of the year.

He jumped two places in Xfinity driver points to 18th.

“Not a bad day for my first race here,” Smithley said. “I feel like we could have picked up a couple more spots, but to finish well and gain some in the standings makes for a pretty good day. We’re learning every week.”

The 18th spot in the point standings is Smithley’s highest of the year. He missed the season-opening race at Daytona Beach, Fla.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. won Saturday’s race, and Daniel Suarez kept the point lead.

The series moves on to Talladega Superspeedway for an April 30 race.
