TEAM CHEVY NOTES & QUOTES:
AJ ALLMENDINGER, NO. 47 KROGER CLICKLIST CAMARO ZL1 – Qualified 2nd
WAS THERE ANY PART OF THE RACE TRACK YOU FELT LIKE YOU COULD HAVE PICKED UP A LITTLE BIT MORE SPEED?
“All of it. I mean this is the way this place is. It’s what makes it interesting and fun. I kind of look back like my Champ Car days it’s a street course. Yeah, you can nitpick and say I could have got a little more here or there, but you could also be in the wall very easily. We weren’t very good in practice, so Trent and all the boys went to work on this Kroger Clicklist Chevy. Got it way better than in practice because I was not very happy. That close, but good starting spot.”
ARE YOU HAVING FUN OUT THERE?
“I mean it’s just part of it. Hell, I’ve got nothing to lose, I don’t have a job, so we just go out there and hanging out.”
ALEX BOWMAN, NO. 88 AXALTA CAMARO ZL1 – Qualified 3rd
“Well I didn’t think we would qualify third on the Roval, so this was a nice surprise! Greg (Ives) and this Axalta team made some great changes after practice, which made the car a lot better in some of the turns. I messed up off the bus stop, so I think the biggest thing on Sunday will be minimizing mistakes. I’m glad to be up toward the front to start this race and hopefully we can stay up front all day on Sunday and have a clean Axalta Camaro ZL1 at the end of the day.”
CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 9 SUNENERGY 1 CAMARO ZL1 – Qualified 4th
“Good qualifying effort by the SunEnergy1 team today and starting good is nice, but making minimal mistakes is hopefully what’s going to give us a good finish on Sunday.”
KYLE LARSON, NO. 42 CLOVER/FIRST DATA CAMARO ZL1- Qualified 5th
“I am kind of disappointed I didn’t do a better job. I feel like we could have easily gotten to pole, but I made so many mistakes in the infield. We have a good starting position, but still I feel like I left a lot out there. I thought I could have easily had the pole.
“I’m sure we are going to have lots of cautions on Sunday. So, track position is critical. Being in front of the craziness is a critical component. We don’t have to win the race, but we have to have a good strong finish.”
JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE’S FOR PROS CAMARO ZL1 – Qualified 6th
“That was good. We had a good test session here. Didn’t run a lot of laps in practice but stayed the course on the setups we came away with from test and ended up sixth. So best starting spot we’ve had a long time.
“Track position is going to be super important after that first stage and we are after stage points. Strategy is going to play a huge role in this race, and the first guy with enough fuel and tires for the finish is going to be in great, great shape. But we need points in each segment and then obviously a good result at the end. So, starting this close to the front is a huge, huge help.”
CHRIS BUESCHER, NO. 37 MAPLE CHEERIOS CAMARO ZL1 – Qualified 10th
HOW SATISFIED ARE YOU WITH THAT EFFORT?
“I’m mad at myself because I messed up. I’m proud of this group they did a really good job today. This place is tough. We are figuring that out in a hurry. To take our Maple Cheerios Camaro ZL1 and put it up in the top 10 that is good. It’s strange that my best qualifying efforts have come at road courses. This is not my forte, not my thing, but I enjoy them. I enjoy this race track. It is hard, but it’s something different and we are learning every time we make laps. I had something decent and keep messing up the chicane on the front stretch here that we have three corner numbers on for some reason. I just overdrove it once, caught too much curb the second time and I’m just mad at myself for messing it up. We will clean it up, go into race trim, get some more practice in and have a good race.”
