Michael Annett Pre-Race Notes & Quotes: Phoenix

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (February 26, 2014) – Michael Annett and the No. 7 Accell Construction Chevrolet SS race team descend upon the desert this weekend, traveling to Phoenix International Raceway for the second race on the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule.

Annett is fresh off of his Sprint Cup Series debut in last weekend’s Daytona 500. He ran as high as ninth and finished 37th after being included in an 11-car accident less than 50 laps from the finish.

The race from Phoenix airs live Sunday, March 2 at 3 pm Eastern on FOX.

NOTES OF INTEREST:

Though he was a full-time NASCAR Nationwide Series competitor last season, Annett missed the March race weekend at Phoenix as he was sidelined with a sternum injury following a crash at Daytona. He considers Phoenix, Richmond and Loudon three of his favorite tracks.
In his four races on the current Phoenix configuration, Annett earned Nationwide Series race results of 10th in the fall 2011 race, 10th and seventh in 2012 and 14th last fall. His 10.25-place average ranked seventh among drivers who competed in at least four of the five events on the redesigned PIR track.
Accell Construction makes its first appearance of 2014 on Annett’s TBR No. 7 this weekend. “We’re excited to be starting our fourth year in the Cup Series with Tommy Baldwin Racing,” said Accell Construction owner Steve Todhunter. “This season begins with a new car number and driver for us as we look forward to working with Michael Annett.”

MICHAEL ANNETT QUOTES:

On Phoenix…

“I enjoy short track racing and it was hard for me to sit out this weekend this time last year. Phoenix is really unique and it’s a lot of fun to drive. I have been reviewing tape of last year’s Cup races, just so that I would be able to visualize how to drive a Cup car there versus how to drive a Nationwide car there.”

On the new qualifying format…

“I’m not sure what all I should expect with the new (qualifying) format. I know Bono and I have talked about how our own strategy might shake out, but it will be a learning experience for sure. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a number of different strategies employed on Friday. At Phoenix, qualifying can certainly help your race result be better, so we already put more of an emphasis on qualifying than usual. It’ll definitely be entertaining for the fans.”
