AJ ALLMENDINGER
NO. 47 BUSH’S® GRILLIN’ BEANS® CHEVROLET SS
POCONO RACEWAY PREVIEW
Race: Windows 10 400
Date/Time: Sunday, August 2 / 1:30 PM ET
TV/Radio: NBCSN / MRN / SIRIUSXM
TEAM QUOTES:
Pocono Raceway: “Pocono Raceway is a place where track position is critical just like any other place,” Allmendinger said. “Hopefully, as the last couple of weeks have went on, we have learned some stuff about our race cars. We have got to make them better for sure. Slowly, we are making progress. Hopefully, we can take that back to Pocono.”
The course of the day: “It is a day that you have to play out through the course of the race and see how it is going,” Allmendinger said. “Last time at Pocono, we were kind of running in the early 20s going into the middle of the race and made some good restarts. We were battling inside the top seven or eight there before an incident.”
Right place right time: “A yellow flag, a right pit call, a wrong pit call can really change the course of the day and with the wave around rule you are really never out of the race or out of an opportunity to have a good finish. That’s a place you have to dig for 400 miles and get everything you can.”
BUSH’S Beans: “We are looking forward to having BUSH’S Grillin’ Beans back on the No. 47 Chevrolet SS,” Allmendinger said. “It’s a bold brand – – with a variety of robust nice flavors that will pretty much compliment any cookout. I believe this is our fourth race with BUSH’S this year and it’s great to have them back as a primary. I say it all the time, but we have some of the best sponsors in the business that have activated their partnership with JTG Daugherty Racing and the sport of NASCAR. It’s cool to see and I’m grateful to be a part of what they do.”
June race: “I felt like we didn’t have a ton of speed throughout the course of the weekend, but we continually made the car better,” Allmendinger said. “We had a good race going and were running inside the top 10 until the late race incident.”
Smoothing bumps: “It was rough, but I don’t think it really affected the race,” Allmendinger said. “You know it just made you feel like you had to get through the corner a little bit different. But, honestly, it will just make it where our heads are not bouncing around in the car that much or as bad. When it came to the race and how if played out, it had no effect on how it played out.”
Band together: “The season has been kind of up and down,” Allmendinger said. “We started the year off really well in the top five in points after five races. We had a couple of engine failures that really hurt the next few races and it got us away from what we’ve been doing. It’s easy to be a strong team when you’re running well, but when things aren’t going the way you want them to go, you’ve got to band together. Our communication and trust in each other and our working together is only going to get stronger. When we get our race cars where they need to be, everything will come together a lot better.”
Good start: “We have a good baseline package to start with at Pocono,” crew chief Brian Burns said. “Last time there we had a solid setup and were running up in the top 10 and it was unfortunate to be in an accident at the end of the race. I feel like the car we are bringing is leaps and bounds ahead of that one.”
Trying to rebound: “Indy (Indianapolis Motor Speedway) was tough for us,” Burns said. “We thought we had a tire going down and then fought the majority of the race to get back on the lead lap while AJ searched for speed and needed grip. We definitely have it in our minds to redeem ourselves from the weekend at Indianapolis.”
Watkins Glen around the corner: “We know what’s at stake there,” Allmendinger said. “We know what the ultimate goal is when we show up there. It is cool to go back to a track where you are the defending champion. If we do the job we know we can do, bring the car we had at Sonoma (Raceway) with that much speed we will have a shot to win the race. If it is meant to play out and we have a shot to win that’s great, if not, it is what it is.”
