Burton, Freightliner Team Hoping To Turn Their Season Around At Texas

As Harrison Burton and the No. 21 Freightliner team head into this weekend’s Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 at Texas Motor Speedway, the team’s focus is on digging their way out of an early season slump.

After eight races, the biggest highlight has been an 11th-place finish in the second race of the season, at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Poor finishes put Burton and the team at a disadvantage in upcoming races because the metrics NASCAR uses to determine the qualifying order are based on recent performances.

That means starting the race weekend as one of the first to qualify, which usually means less-than-ideal track conditions relative to the rest of the field. Struggles in qualifying then put the team behind from the start of the race and working from a less-desirable pit stall.

“There’s no getting around the fact that we aren’t where we want to be, and it’s a vicious cycle,” crew chief Jeremy Bullins explained. “Going out early in qualifying has been terrible for us, and track position is such a huge deal, probably more than ever.”

But Bullins remains hopeful that the Freightliner team can work its way out of the slump and begin accumulating points.

“One good week can help us get the whole thing turned around, so we will keep fighting until we get there,” he said.

The next chance to do that begins with practice at Texas on Saturday at 9:35 a.m. Central Time (10:35 Eastern) to be followed by qualifying at 10:20 (11:20 Eastern).

Sunday’s 267-lap, 400-mile race is scheduled to get the green flag just after 2:30 p.m. (3:30 Eastern). Stage breaks are planned for Laps 80 and 165.

FOX Sports 1 will carry the TV coverage both days.

Glenn’s brother, Leonard, is known for inventing the modern pit stop. The team currently runs the Ford Mustang driven by Harrison Burton in the famous No. 21 racer.

What does it take to run well at Texas Motor Speedway?
“It’s a lot of things. Being able to carry a lot of throttle to run through (turns) one and two. I don’t think anybody’s really ever going to complain about handling in (turns) three and four, so it’s only one end of the racetrack you’ve got to run really well, and the other end kind of takes care of itself. More important is track position. We need to qualify good. As we all say, we need to run good on Saturday to run really good on Sunday. I think we can make that happen.”
This track is home to your first NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series win and you also ran well last year in the Cup car. Does this make you more excited for the weekend or do you feel any added pressure to perform well based on your history here?
“I feel more confident about the fact that I did well last year with Luke (Lambert) in a Cup car than I do about winning last year in trucks. Of course, that win means so much to me but they’re both so different and we had the chance for a top-10 car last year in Cup, so I know I can do well. I think the 77 team is plenty capable to make that happen and more than anything, just excited to get back on a mile-and-a-half because I think that’s where we really shine.”

CHEVROLET AND JOHN FORCE RACING LOOK TO TACKLE THE NHRA 4-WIDE NATIONALS AT THE STRIP AT LAS VEGAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY

Notes:

  • Team Chevy next heads to the 2024 NHRA 4-Wide Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway April 12-14, 2024.
  • After a successful double-winning weekend in Phoenix for Austin Prock, driver of the Cornwell Tools Chevrolet Camaro SS Funny Car, and John Force, driver of the PEAK Chevrolet Camaro SS Funny Car, who both captured victories with Chevrolet for the Arizona Nationals and weather-delayed Winternationals from Pomona. Force captured Chevrolet’s 160th in Funny Car, with Prock capturing the 161st for Team Chevy, the 80th and 81st respectively in the Camaro SS Funny Car.
  • Seeking a return to the winner’s circle, Brittany Force, driver of the Monster Energy Chevrolet Top Fuel dragster, looks to defend her No. 1 qualifier from 2023 while besting with her 17th career NHRA victory and Chevrolet’s 21st in Top Fuel.
  • Pro Stock saw Dallas Glenn racing to victory for the Bowtie brand in 2023’s 4-Wide Nationals, after Matt Hartford qualified No. 1. Both look to either defend or capture the 2024 NHRA 4-Wide Nationals Wally trophy.

Quotes:

BRITTANY FORCE, DRIVER OF THE MONSTER ENERGY CHEVROLET TOP FUEL DRAGSTER:

“(Vegas is) a place we’ve had success in the past and we’re eager to return. The four-wide format there will definitely mix things up, but I believe the testing in Phoenix will have us well-prepared.”

AUSTIN PROCK, DRIVER OF THE CORNWELL TOOLS CHEVROLET CAMARO SS FUNNY CAR:

“I’m excited to go to Vegas. I always love going there and it’s a beautiful facility. I’ve always wanted to get a win there. We’ve got some good mojo, so hopefully we can take advantage. I’m looking forward to four-wide and I hope the fans are, too. Maybe we can get the job done this weekend. We’ve started the year strong, struggled a little bit (in Pomona) and had to get some revenge (last) weekend (in Phoenix). When you’re getting to race with your family, there’s never a bad day out here. I’ve wanted to race with my dad and brother my whole life and I’m getting to do that, and we sure are having a lot of fun as a family. I’m getting more comfortable every lap, but every time you think you’re comfortable, this thing does something crazy to you. Every time you think you have a handle on it, you don’t and that’s what makes this category so tough. You’ve got to drive off your gut and instinct. Your car is talking to you the whole time you’re on the gas. These cars are no joke and these are the hardest cars I’ve ever driven.”

JOHN FORCE, DRIVER OF THE PEAK ANTIFREEZE & COOLANT CHEVROLET CAMARO SS FUNNY CAR:

“It was a fantastic weekend for Cornwell Tools and Chevrolet, clinching a victory like that, especially with (Austin) Prock landing his first NHRA Funny Car win. It’s a big deal. We had to navigate through some changes, with Robert Hight, a three-time champion, stepping back for a bit. But everything’s aligning well for John Force Racing. Our top priority has always been looking after our sponsors, and this win certainly does that. Clinching the victory in Pomona yesterday was thrilling. It’s still early in the season, but this win sets a positive tone we’re all proud of. Yet, we’re mindful of the fierce competition out there; we’ve got our work cut out for us. (Austin) Prock’s got a solid team behind him, with his dad and brother in the mix. Robert’s (Hight) been sharing his wisdom about the car, much like he does with me, and it’s paying off. (Austin’s) got a background in dirt racing before moving to Top Fuel with us, and he’s had stints in our Funny Car too. Transitioning to a new team in Top Fuel was a challenge, but now he’s backed by a seasoned team, and they’re really complementing each other well. I’m incredibly proud of him for securing these victories for Chevrolet and all our sponsors. It’s all part of the job, but it sure was a great weekend for John Force Racing.”

GREG ANDERSON LOOKS TO CARRY PHOENIX MOMENTUM INTO LAS VEGAS AT 4-WIDE NATIONALS

LAS VEGAS (April 10, 2024) – Pro Stock veteran Greg Anderson is no stranger to the NHRA winner’s circle as proven by his 104 career wins. This weekend at the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals in Las Vegas, he’ll look to add another to his impressive resume at a track that means a great deal to him.

Anderson, the winningest driver in the Pro Stock field, and the rest of the stars of the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series will again take to the track this weekend at the 24th annual NHRA 4-Wide Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Anderson is coming into Las Vegas hot after his win in Phoenix, his first of the year in his HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro.

“I’m excited to get to Vegas because obviously I love the Black family,” said Anderson. “Ken and Judy Black have been my team owners for 20 plus years. We now have new ownership but they’re still the greatest supporters you could ever imagine. They text, they call at races. They certain are not out of the sport. They’re at home but they’re still watching. They’ll be in Vegas next weekend and I would love nothing better than to show off in front of them so I can’t wait to get there.”

The 2023 event saw Antron Brown (Top Fuel), Matt Hagan (Funny Car) and Dallas Glenn (Pro Stock) take home the coveted NHRA Wally trophies and this season’s race will again be broadcasted on FS1, including eliminations coverage at 7 p.m. ET on Sunday, April 14, showcasing all the entertainment from Las Vegas.

This weekend’s NHRA 4-Wide Nationals also marks the first four-wide event for the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge. The bonus race debuted last year and takes place on Saturday, putting a bonus purse and championship points on the line. It happens in Vegas for the first time this year, as two quads will face off during the third round of qualifying on Saturday. The top four advance to the final quad to close out qualifying, with the winner getting a chance to double-up in Vegas.

Because of his win in Phoenix, Anderson will take part in the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge. In his quad, he’ll meet up with competitors Jeg Coughlin Jr., a five-time Vegas winner, Jerry Tucker and Troy Coughlin Jr. The other quad will made up of reigning champion Erica Enders, Aaron Stanfield, Cristian Cuadra and reigning event winner Glenn.

It all adds up to an opportunity for a double-win weekend for Anderson, who loves the challenge of four-wide racing.

“As far as the four-wide goes, it’s a bigger challenge than most tracks. I love that,” Anderson said. “I absolutely love a bigger challenge. I’m going to accept the challenge and see if I can find a way to do it better than these young guys. It’s kind of strange because sometimes I feel like the four-wide is more difficult to me because I’ve got so many years of doing it the other way and maybe some of these new guys and new gals. They’re in their beginning and they’re not set in their ways. They don’t have bad habits like I have. They’re not used to always racing two wide. They race four-wide now so it’s probably easier for them to adapt than it is me. It’s a huge challenge to me but I look forward to it and love racing in Vegas. Big challenges coming up but bring it on.”

Last season in Top Fuel Brown earned his six Las Vegas title. At this weekend’s Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge Four-Wide addition, Brown will be in a quad of Steve Torrence, Shawn Reed and Phoenix winner Shawn Langdon. The other quad will consist of Billy Torrence, reigning champ Doug Kalitta and Justin Ashley, who picked up the Winternationals win, and motorsports legend Tony Stewart in his Top Fuel rookie season.

In the Funny Car category, Hagan picked up his fifth Las Vegas win last year. He’s after his first victory in 2024 against the likes of first-year Funny Car driver Austin Prock, who won in Phoenix, Winternationals winner John Force, points leader J.R. Todd, Ron Capps, Bob Tasca III, Alexis DeJoria and Daniel Wilkerson. In the Funny Car Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, one quad includes Prock, Wilkerson, Force and Todd, with the other featuring DeJoria, Cruz Pedregon, Paul Lee and Blake Alexander.

The NHRA 4-Wide Nationals also will feature thrilling competition in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, featuring some of the top racers in the country. Also on deck will be Flexjet Factory Stock Showdown and the 2024 debut of the new Holley EFI Factory X category, while a special jet car exhibition featuring the “Muy Caliente” and the “Iceman” jet dragsters will follow the conclusion of nitro qualifying each day as well.

Fans will also be invited all weekend long to the Nitro Alley Stage, which will help create a festive atmosphere leading into the nitro pits. The Nitro Alley Stage will be the main entertainment hub in the pits when the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series competitors are not on the track, hosting Nitro School, meet and greets, music and much more. Race fans in Vegas can enjoy the special pre-race ceremonies that introduce and celebrate each of the drivers racing for the prestigious Wally on Sunday and includes the fan favorite SealMaster Track Walk.

As always, fans also get an exclusive pit pass to the most powerful and sensory-filled motorsports attraction on the planet in Las Vegas. This opportunity gives fans a unique chance to see teams in action and service their hot rods between rounds, get autographs from their favorite NHRA drivers, and more. Fans can also visit NHRA’s popular Nitro Alley and Manufacturers Midway, where sponsors and race vendors create an exciting atmosphere that includes interactive displays, simulated competitions, merchandise, food, and fun for the entire family.

NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series qualifying will feature two rounds at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. PT on Friday, April 12, and the final two rounds of qualifying on Saturday, April 13 at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Eliminations will begin at 12 p.m. PT on Sunday, April 14. Television coverage includes qualifying action at 11:00 p.m. ET on both Friday and Saturday on Fox Sports 1 (FS1), leading into eliminations coverage at 7:00 p.m. ET on Sunday at FS1.

Notes of Interest

● Outrageously Dependable for 33 Years and Counting: Interstate Batteries has 11 primary sponsorships on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule in 2024, a similar number of schemes to last year’s expanded presence among all four JGR Toyota Camry XSEs. After another appearance in the Daytona 500 to start the season with Christopher Bell finishing in third, Interstate returned at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with Christopher Bell to bring home a 33rd-place finish, and Denny Hamlin brought the green colors to the Circuit of Americas in Austin, Texas, last month and brought home a 14th-place finish. This weekend’s race at Texas is the first of four primary sponsorships on Gibbs’ No. 54 Camry. Next up, Interstate’s colors will have co-primary sponsorships at the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway in May with Gibbs. Bell and Gibbs will run the majority of the Interstate Batteries’ races with eight primaries total between the two drivers. Hamlin returns for the second of two races sporting Interstate colors at Iowa Speedway in Newton in June, and Martin Truex Jr., will carry a primary Interstate Batteries sponsorship for one race on the No. 19 Interstate Batteries Toyota Camry at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway in July.

● Just a Little Bit Closer. Ty Gibbs makes his 60th career start in the NASCAR Cup Series this weekend at Texas. Gibbs has had a strong start to his sophomore season in NASCAR’s top series, recording three top-five finishes and five top-10s, and leading 309 laps in the eight races contested so far this season. Sitting at the top of his to-do list is scoring his first career Cup Series win, and he’d like nothing more than to bring home that first victory in the backyard of JGR’s founding sponsor Interstate Batteries.

● Texas History. Last September’s race at Texas was Gibbs’ second Cup Series start at the 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway oval, but his first for JGR ended early because of an accident. Gibbs competed in the 2022 edition of the Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 for 23XI Racing, qualifying 16th, completing every race lap and finishing 20th. In addition to his two Cup Series starts on the Texas oval, Gibbs participated in a pair of Xfinity Series races – both during his 2022 Xfinity Series championship season. The 20-year old’s best Texas effort was a third-place finish he earned during the November 2022 Xfinity Series race.

● Gibbs heads to Texas seventh in the driver standings with 254 points, just 55 behind series leader Kyle Larson. All four JGR entries are currently inside the top-11 in points heading to the ninth race of the season. Martin Truex Jr. sits second in the standings with Denny Hamlin in third, Gibbs seventh, and Christopher Bell 11th, propelling a strong start to the season for Team Interstate.

● At the age of 19 years, 9 months and 20 days, Gibbs made his first career NASCAR Cup Series start last July 24 at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway for 23XI Racing. He became the 37th driver younger than 20 years of age to make a Cup Series start. He started at the rear of the field but completed all 160 laps on his way to an impressive 16th-place finish.

● Dazzling Debut: Gibbs was victorious in his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut in the February 2021 race on the Daytona road course. He led 14 of the 56 laps and became the youngest driver to win an Xfinity Series road-course race at 18 years, 4 months and 16 days. The native of Charlotte, North Carolina, also became the second-youngest winner in Xfinity Series history behind Joey Logano, who won in June 2008 at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta at the age of 18 years, 21 days.

Ty Gibbs, Driver of the No. 54 Interstate Batteries Toyota Camry XSE

What are your thoughts about this weekend’s 400-mile race at Texas?

“I enjoy racing at Texas and it’s cool that Interstate Batteries is back on our car for the first time this year. It’s a big weekend for them whenever we get to race at Texas with their office right up the road. I know they’ll have a lot of people there rooting us on, which is really cool. They are an important part of Joe Gibbs Racing and the founding sponsor, so hopefully we can give them a great weekend.”

With Interstate Batteries being the founding partner at JGR, how special is it to be racing the Interstate Batteries colors at its home track this weekend?

“Norm Miller (Chairman Emeritus) has been great to JGR all the way back to 1991, when my grandfather started this whole thing. He’s just a great guy, and Lain Hancock (President and CEO) is doing a great job, and it’s more than a sponsorship – they’re part of the family. I hope we can put them in victory lane.”

What is your relationship like with crew chief Chris Gayle and the No. 54 team, with whom you’re off to a strong start to the season?

“It’s really great. I work really well with them. Chris Gayle – he has been my crew chief since 2021. He’s been working with me for a minute. I feel like we have a good connection, Also, my engineer Kyle Abrahims – he’s been with me and Chris Gayle since 2021. We’ve all been working really good together and we are going to keep hammering down. Hoping we can keep running up front and have a chance for the win this weekend with Interstate Batteries.”

Joe Gibbs Racing has been very strong over the last few seasons. How do you describe the dynamic at the team right now?

“First of all, we need to give all of the thanks to the Joe Gibbs Racing aero department, along with Toyota. The new Toyota Camry XSE body – they’ve just done a great job with it. They’ve worked really hard on it, so it is great for all of them. Our team is great, and I have great teammates – they all have different characteristics, which is really cool, and I think that is really helpful with a team. We all come from pretty different backgrounds, so it’s a good atmosphere there and, in our meetings on Mondays, I can tell we all want it. All of the great feedback is just going to help us get better and better.”

CHEVROLET IN INDYCAR: PREMA Racing Press Conference Transcript

CHEVROLET IN NTT INDYCAR SERIES
INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY
INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA
PREMA RACING ANNOUNCEMENT PRESS CONFERENCE
APRIL 10, 2024

JAY FRYE – President of INDYCAR, PIERS PHILLIPS – CEO of PREMA Racing, RENE ROSIN – Team Principal of PREMA Racing – Press Conference Transcript:

THE MODERATOR: Good morning, everyone. Welcome to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, racing capital of the world.

As everyone knows, yesterday PREMA Racing, winners of some 80 driver and team single-seater championships through the years, announcing they’ll be joining the NTT INDYCAR SERIES in 2025. It is a full-time two-car effort with Chevrolet power and a shop that will be located here in the state of Indiana.

Joining us this morning, PREMA Racing, Rene Rosin. We welcome back Piers Phillips, who is the PREMA Racing INDYCAR CEO. As well, INDYCAR president Jay Frye. Good morning to all three of you gentlemen.

We’ll begin with Rene. The growth of the team over the last 40 years now, certainly well-documented, the drivers that have come out of your program read like a who’s who in INDYCAR and Formula 1. What makes the move to INDYCAR the right move at the right time for you?

RENE ROSIN: Good afternoon, everybody, and good morning.

For PREMA, we always looking to new challenge. Having the possibility to compete here in the U.S., in the most important championship in the most important American teams, is something that we are really proud and looking forward next year.

Is a new challenge for us. We always looking to find new adventure, new possibility to expand not only for our drivers but as well for mechanics, engineers. Given the opportunity to grow up within our structure and our business is something that we always looking forwards.

THE MODERATOR: Welcome. Great news.

Piers, through your various INDYCAR roles, welcome back. Certainly you know a setup is not easy. As you’ve gotten into this, what has excited you about this opportunity?

PIERS PHILLIPS: The first thing that obviously excited me was working with Rene and his organization, PREMA, amazing organization with amazing history.

The challenge is something we all live for. Everybody that is a racer gets out of the bed to go and win, the challenges associated with that.

For me, starting from what is effectively a blank page, being able to incorporate what I know from my time here in the U.S., in this amazing championship, and my previous experience in obviously the PREMA experience from Europe, being able to blend that and really produce a different sort of culture, really progressive-thinking organization, along with our partners at Chevrolet, really excites me about putting a consistently competitive team together.

THE MODERATOR: Jay, you bring in Meyer Shank, the list goes and on. The majority stakeholder that McLaren has had over the last couple years. Some four teams really since 2020 that have joined the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. How did this new relationship come about?

JAY FRYE: It’s amazing. You think about the rolling five-year plan we implemented in 2017. One of the goals was to recruit new and elite race teams and owners, that type of thing. Obviously 80 championships in 40 years, that’s pretty elite. We’re certainly thrilled to have them.

We’ve been talking with them for the last six, eight months. We worked on the plan, let them see what it looks like going forward. We’re really excited to have them.

By my count, this will be 29 full-time entries, so things are really good.

THE MODERATOR: We’ll open it up for questions.

Q. Rene, you have produced some drivers that have done well here, Marcus, Felix, Callum. Did you speak to some of those guys before coming here to start an INDYCAR program?

RENE ROSIN: Honestly, even if we start talking together with INDYCAR in the last six, seven months, of course the discussion of opportunity to expand into America is something that is coming already between more than two, three years ago with some ideas, of course discussion.

We are still in very good contact with all these drivers that you mentioned. We just celebrate our 40th anniversary in December. Most of them have been able to join us in Venice in our event. We always very close to them and very friendly relationship with all of them. We always talk together.

They always say, Why not coming to America? Why not do INDYCAR? It would be something very good for you, very good for the team. That is something we are looking forward in 2025 now.

Q. Jay, obviously with 29 cars potential next year, there’s going to be some likely issues on a few of the pit lanes. Any thoughts so far on how you will take care of those issues, Mid-Ohio, Toronto?

JAY FRYE: We’ve talked about it before. There’s problems now with some of the places we go to, right? It’s something we’ve got to evaluate, look at going forward. Certainly a problem, but a really good problem to have, and something we’ll sort out.

Q. Will the driver lineup be drivers that are already in your pipeline or possibly drivers that are already in INDYCAR?

RENE ROSIN: The driver lineup is something we are evaluating. We are looking at how the market will lead first.

We have some ideas. Of course, we want to get the most prepared as possible, get a good lineup to perform. But of course is something we will discuss in the next coming months.

We are looking to get a competitive lineup within our self experience. Rookies, something we’re evaluating. Possible our pipeline, possibly not. Everything is open at the moment.

Q. Why INDYCAR and why did you want to embark on this project right now?

RENE ROSIN: I think, first of all, why INDYCAR? As I said before, is a great challenge. Is something that expand our business opportunity in another level, in another continent. We wanted to get out of Europe because, of course, we reach every possible category within the ladder of motorsport apart from Formula 1 in Europe, from karting till Formula 2. We have a technical partnership in World Endurance Championship and (indiscernible) DH. This is something we were looking to expand our boundaries to make sure we can create a global group within our entity.

Why in ’25? Of course, when PREMA join a championship, it’s not to join to be just a number or to be somebody part of it, we want to be part as a protagonist, we want to be part when we are ready to do something. ’24 to ’25 was the right time for us in terms of structures, all the other programs we are doing, to setting up a new adventure here in the U.S.

Q. Why two full-time cars to start off in a brand-new series?

PIERS PHILLIPS: That’s a good question. It’s to concentrate the effort more than anything else. There’s a huge amount for PREMA to understand. Obviously the core of the team will have experience, and I’m really comfortable with the individuals we have in line for that.

I always tell people INDYCAR is probably the most challenging series in the world. The diversity of the tracks, the street courses, the ovals. Every street course is different. Every oval is different. Every road course is different. We need to really hone in, concentrate our efforts and put a competitive program together as quickly as possible.

Q. In the release you mentioned starting in a shop in the Indiana area. Have you landed on that area yet, purchased it?

PIERS PHILLIPS: We are evaluating the options. We have various places at the moment. Right now that’s to be confirmed.

Q. You are coming into the series at a time where you could have the potential to have to qualify for just about every race on the calendar with the new charter system. Is that a tough thing for you to battle, new team, two full-time cars, potential to have to qualify to start races?

PIERS PHILLIPS: Obviously we’re aware of the situation, aware of the discussions that are ongoing. Yes, obviously in communications with INDYCAR on that. We’ll keep that in our focus as we move forward.

If I could speak from a competition standpoint. There’s some very, very strong, top-level teams in this championship. We know that. But it is our desire that we will come in and we want to be competitive right from the word ‘go’. I know that’s a big ask, but we will be working extremely hard in putting all our efforts from the start of the program.

Q. Piers, will the team members be comprised of a mixture of guys that you necessarily may be familiar with along with some guys that may be working for the team over in Europe?

PIERS PHILLIPS: Yeah, that’s a possibility. Obviously INDYCAR, it’s a very sort of, particularly the ovals, a niche of experience that is required. There’s a lot of people. Even since the release yesterday, I’m surprised my phone didn’t end up in a little ball of melted plastic yesterday (smiling).

We will be looking at blending the talents from both sides of the Atlantic. I think that’s a fair statement, yeah.

Q. Jay, when you began, one of the problems was there were a lot of good crew guys out there and not necessarily a lot of opportunities for jobs. Now it’s the opposite. How do you address that? Is that a great problem to have?

JAY FRYE: Yes, just like when you mentioned about the car count, it’s a problem, but it’s a great problem to have.

We have tried to do things like last year we set up a job portal, INDYCAR did, to help recruit, the teams do that. There have been a lot of teams that actually used that portal.

We are collectively as a group working with the paddock to recruit new and young talent coming into the sport. It’s a great opportunity for a lot of young people right now to come into the sport at a time when it’s growing rapidly.

Yeah, again, it’s a problem. It’s a good problem. One we’re all addressing together. I think we’ll get through it.

Q. You mentioned you competed in pretty much everything over in Europe. Coming to INDYCAR, how difficult do you feel this challenge is going to be next season?

RENE ROSIN: First of all, is a great challenge to have because is meaning that we are the top level of the motorsport worldwide, I would say. Of course, there will be some tough times in terms of organization, in terms of planning, in terms of engineering. With the patience and determination of everybody in the team, I think we can succeed.

Of course, it will be a learning year, 2025. We need to learn this difficult way of racing from road course, ovals and street circuits. I think we are looking forward to blend together the European and American mentality and bring some novelties within this championship.

Q. Rene, do you see INDYCAR as a special opportunity to keep some of the talents and bring them to INDYCAR to continue this relationship?

RENE ROSIN: This is for sure an opportunity that we gave to drivers. Of course, the motorsport market can offer different opportunity. But for drivers going after Formula 2, one of the opportunity, the place in Formula 1 are quite limited. Having the chance to explore the INDYCAR world is also something to consider and something positive. It’s something we can offer to our drivers in order to continue their progression and their aspire to professionalism.

Q. Piers, you talked about your experience in INDYCAR. How exciting is it for you to have something from a blank slate, being able to bring some people from Europe, from America, everyone meeting in PREMA?

PIERS PHILLIPS: It’s an exciting opportunity as I touched on before. I think having known Rene and his team for a while now, the enthusiasm, the energy that emanates from them, it’s unbelievable.

I think to come in as maybe nobody else has done, we haven’t done an Indy Lights team, haven’t bought anybody, really put our mark on this from the first day we open the workshop, is incredibly exciting.

I think to see that come to fulfillment, first race, first race win dare I say, will be an amazing journey for everybody that’s involved with it.

Q. Jay, we’ve talked about the car count. Do you envision one day a hard stop on the number of cars allowed to race or everyone can still come in and you will find the solutions, even 31 or 32 entries?

JAY FRYE: Probably a hybrid of all. We will do all we can to start as many cars as we can. But like you mentioned, obviously there are limits. There will be a time where that has to be addressed and we will address it.

Q. Rene, how hands on is your role going to be? More focused on the European side of things or…

RENE ROSIN: First of all, we need to continue competing and winning, of course, in the European side. My role will evolve into a more overlooking both sides of PREMA, both European and America.

In each group we have a responsible that is on the day-by-day management. Of course, I will be present in the most important events, then I will try to do my best to make sure that every team has all the needs and the possibility to well perform.

Q. In the last couple years you’ve seen a few teams form alliances and partnerships. Is that something you look at exploring to help your growth in the series?

RENE ROSIN: It’s something we are open to everything. We are open to evaluating. Of course, we want to do our team in the best way as possible. When will be the moment to discuss it, I think we will start discussing.

It is something that we want to do, to first analyze all the opportunities, then decide what is the best to do.

Q. Where do you think the health of the series is, getting another European name coming in? How good news is this for the series?

JAY FRYE: It’s obviously huge news. A team that’s won 80 championships in 40 years, that’s phenomenal. I can even do that math. Pretty good math, right?

This is for sure our vision of what could happen, is to recruit elite teams like PREMA. To have them here, we’re quite excited about it.

The car count piece, last year 27 full-time, which was a record. We have just added to that. We just added to that with an elite program. We’re obviously excited to have them.

Q. Are there any other teams potentially looking at bringing entries to the series? Could we see that number grow more in the next few years?

JAY FRYE: Yes. There’s ongoing conversations with two or three different entries or entities. Again, it’s a problem, but it’s a good problem to have right now.

There’s a lot of interest in INDYCAR. I think it looks back over what’s happened the last few years, going forward we got a lot of good things going on. There is currently a lot of interest in INDYCAR, yes.

Q. Mr. Rosin, you’ve built a virtual ladder in racing in the United States. Do you also plan to expand to INDY NXT? Is that a further consideration?

RENE ROSIN: Of course, we need to keep our eyes open and see what the market will require. At the moment we have quite enough on our table to what we are doing. We are looking to improve that and stabilize all our efforts and maximize the results.

Q. Piers, you’ve obviously got a wide ranging INDYCAR experience. You’ve seen some new teams that have come into the series. What do you feel are some of the most important things to be able to have success, be a long time team in the series?

PIERS PHILLIPS: I think the main thing in my experience is understanding the culture of American racing because it’s different to Europe. Having worked on both sides of the Atlantic, having had success on both sides, you understand the strengths.

But the racing is different. I think it’s important that you come in and respect the championship and respect the series for what it is, particularly this place. What an amazing facility for anybody to come and race at.

You need to understand the cultural differences. That’s back to what I was talking about earlier: being able to blend the best of both worlds and end up better than everybody else.

All the teams have different circumstances. I think we start from a really strong foundation with PREMA, their experience. It’s up to me to make sure that we guide it in the right direction and keep our eyes open and make sure that we don’t fall into any of the situations that those previous teams did.

Q. It’s been said that you might try to target an experienced INDYCAR driver, then someone who is currently in your development program. Is that the goal or the format that you’re target the right now or in flux still?

RENE ROSIN: If I can say for sure, ideally it will be good to have an experienced drivers and of course one rookie. On the other hand, as PREMA, we always work with rookie. We always maximize the result. We are not scared to even have two rookies.

We are really evaluating all the opportunity to maximize what is our potential. I think this is now the next step on what we will dedicate most of our time together to building up the teams in the best ways possible. That’s quite soon we will have some news.

Q. As INDYCAR is pursuing this new charter system, is it a goal to buy one or two of these whenever they become available or are you okay operating in the current status quo, potentially have to qualify?

RENE ROSIN: Of course, chartering system is something that is on the table. Is on the discussion of INDYCAR. First we want to understand how everything had go and then we will decide what’s the best way to do.

THE MODERATOR: We’ll leave it there for now. Congratulations.

Thad Moffitt and Clean Harbors Continue Petty Family Tradition on Track

Environmental Leader Serves as Primary Sponsor for Faction46 in Two 2024 Races

SALISBURY, N.C. (April 10, 2024) — Faction46 has signed its newest partner to its growing NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series program, and it is a familiar one to Thad Moffitt and his Petty family roots. Clean Harbors, North America’s leading provider of environmental and industrial services, will continue its longstanding relationship with the Petty family and Moffitt with the new relationship with Faction46.

Clean Harbors, utilizing its various brands, will be the primary partner for Moffitt at the Texas Motor Speedway on Friday, April 12 and again on Saturday, August 10 at the Richmond (Va.) Raceway. Both events will be raced under lights and feature the Safety-Kleen colors as the lead brand. Performance Plus Motor Oil and HPC Industrial, additional Clean Harbors companies, will also share space on the truck and be promoted by Moffitt and the team.

Safety-Kleen, NASCAR and Petty have been working together for decades, with Moffitt having been a part of the Clean Harbors family for the past several years. The company helped Moffitt grow during his racing career, leading him to the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series with Faction46 owned by Lane Moore.

“Clean Harbors and Safety-Kleen have been involved with the Petty family and NASCAR for so long that we’re now family,” said Buddy Judy, Director of Motorsports, Clean Harbors. “The baton has been passed to Thad and he is carrying on the tradition for us. We are proud to continue to support his career and the Petty family legacy.”

Moffitt has raced, backed by Clean Harbors, for as long as he can remember, most recently with the company in the ARCA and Trans Am Series. Clean Harbors was also the primary sponsor when Moffitt made his first NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series debut in 2022.

“I really want to thank Buddy and everyone at Clean Harbors for everything they continue to do for me and now for Faction46,” said Moffitt. “As a new team, we rely on our partners to get better on the track to compete for wins. Clean Harbors, Safety-Kleen and HPC Industrial are important for us to get better. We are working hard to represent them the best we can all season, and especially at Texas and Richmond.”

The addition of Clean Harbors as a primary adds to the list of partners of Faction46 that includes Best Working Wipes, Centramatic, Customers Bank, Joe Jurgielewicz and Son – America’s Tastiest Duck, Induction Innovations and Pristine Auction.

“It’s awesome to see our team continue to attract more partners and watching our partners grow the team,” said owner, Moore. “It is a true partnership and Clean Harbors and Safety-Kleen are staples in NASCAR. Bayley Currey on Friday’s Race at Texas Motor Speedway: “It’s always fun coming back to Texas,” said Currey. “I really enjoy racing here and have a lot of experience behind the wheel in Xfinity cars and a couple Truck starts too. We’ve shown a lot of speed on the mile-and-a-half tracks so far this season, so I’m excited to get back to another one this week in our AutoVentive/Precision Vehicle Logistics Chevrolet.”

By The Numbers: Friday’s race marks Currey’s third NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series start at Texas Motor Speedway. His previous two starts both came in 2018. Currey has one NASCAR Cup Series start at the 1.5-mile track, coming in 2019. In addition, Currey has nine NASCAR Xfinity Series starts at the Texas track, with five top-20 finishes.

On the Truck: Currey’s No. 41 Chevrolet Silverado will race with support from AutoVentive and Precision Vehicle Logistics.

Recapping the Last Race: Bayley Currey and the No. 41 Sparco team practiced inside the top-15 on Friday afternoon, before qualifying in the 15th-position. Currey ran a clean race and stayed out of trouble for much of the night. As the laps wound down, Currey’s No. 41 Chevrolet sustained some damage as he tried to avoid an accident in front of him. Currey and the No. 41 team would be credited with a 17th-place finish.

Currey on Last Race at Martinsville Speedway: “The team at Niece brought me a solid truck,” said Currey. “It was hard to pass, but I do think we were a lot faster than other trucks; we just could not get by them. I felt like we made good strategy decisions and were running towards the top-10 there towards the end, and unfortunately got into a little bit of a scuffle on the backstretch and that set us back. I’m really thankful to have Sparco on board with us this week and am looking forward to Texas with the team.”
