Wright Motorsports Executes Impeccable Rolex 24 At Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (January 30, 2024) – Recognized across the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship paddock for their unwavering consistency and exceptional operational standards, Wright Motorsports once again demonstrated near-perfection to inaugurate the 2024 racing season. Piloting the No. 120 Porsche 911 GT3 R, drivers Adam Adelson, Elliott Skeer, Jan Heylen, and Fred Makowiecki set a strong precedent for the year at the recently concluded Rolex 24 At Daytona.

The longest event in the 2024 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the Rolex 24 At Daytona stands as one of the most demanding races for drivers and participants. This year, the 59 teams were gifted with sunny skies and warm weather, which made for a smoother event for all. Though the weather may have been warm and calm, the early opening hours of the race were anything but. Navigating skillfully, Wright Motorsport avoided on-track incidents that triggered 15 full-course cautions. Starting from the 19th position in the 23-car field, the Ohio-based team swiftly gained five positions in the opening laps.

For Adelson and Skeer, this marked their debut at the Rolex 24 At Daytona and in the IMSA WeatherTech Championship. Despite their rookie status, the duo showcased remarkable skill, maintaining pace with their experienced counterparts and advancing through the field without any errors or significant contact. By nightfall, with under five hours completed, the quartet collaboratively propelled the Porsche into the top three. As darkness enveloped the track, the four drivers continued their rotation.

Throughout the nighttime hours, they preserved the car impeccably, steering clear of trouble. Despite the challenges posed by the series-mandated balance of performance (BoP), hindering the Porsche’s progress, the team’s adept pit stops proved instrumental in maintaining a competitive position after each visit to the pits. A swift brake change at the halfway mark underscored their prowess in the pit lane.

With the sunrise, the team found themselves in the eighth position, although the race had stretched out the GTD class, limiting opportunities for overtaking in the final hours. Ultimately, the No. 120 secured a commendable seventh-place finish, showcasing significant progress over the 24-hour marathon.

The team’s next challenge is set for the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring in Florida from March 13-16, marking the second race in their six-event schedule.

DRIVER QUOTES

Adam Adelson

I can’t believe I just completed my first Rolex 24 At Daytona. I’m extremely happy with the way I drove and have already identified where I need to improve and what to focus on for the remainder of the season. I can’t thank the entire Wright Motorsports team enough; they were flawless in their performance and gave us a real fighting chance. I’m super happy with my co-drivers’ performances as well, especially Elliott who was also a Daytona 24 rookie. It was overall an amazing experience, and it just makes me hungrier for a watch next year!

Elliott Skeer

My first Rolex24 ticked every non-result-based box that I could have imagined. To not only finish but for the team to have a near-perfect day of execution and to be top Porsche is a very good feeling. Adam and I came in rookies and I am extremely proud of both of our performances. This sets the correct tempo for the rest of the 2024 season and I cannot wait for Sebring!

Jan Heylen

I want to start by saying thank you to the whole team and to Adam for putting this program together. The team did an unbelievable job with perfect pitstops all race long, I don’t think that from a team’s point of view, we could’ve done much better than what we did. Also, Adam and Elliot did a fantastic job being at the Rolex for the first time. Of course, we are all disappointed with the result, but it was not for a lack of trying, or performance from the team or drivers. We executed what we have control over and I’m proud of what we did as a team.

Fred Makowiecki

On one hand, I’m super proud of the team. Everyone at Wright was very professional and very well prepared. For a driver, it’s a pleasure and a big chance to work with Wright for the Rolex 24 At Daytona. On the other hand, it was a hard race because we were missing pace, and not for anything that was in our control because the car was well prepared. It was tough against the competition, and we were missing some tenths at the end of the race to be able to fight for a podium, but definitely, each person on the team has to be proud of the performance.

● TV/Radio: FOX / MRN / SiriusXM NASCAR Radio

Notes of Interest

● Josh Berry heads to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for the first time in the NASCAR Cup Series this weekend, leaning heavily into his short-track skillset from years of dominance running Late Models prior to climbing the ranks in NASCAR.

● The 33-year-old Cup Series rookie’s career has a unique inception. The iRacing afficiando met Dale Earnhadt Jr., on the simulator racing platform, where they fostered a friendship that was rooted in competition. Earnhardt offered Berry an opportunity to test one of his Late Model cars and Berry took full advantage of that opportunity. Starting his journey for JR Motorsports in 2010, Berry made 262 starts and amassed 95 wins, 189 top-five finishes and 219 top-10s. More notably, Berry won the NASCAR Weekly Series championship in 2020. That year, he only finished one race outside of the top-10.

● Berry also has experience behind the wheel of a NextGen stock car, competing in 12 Cup Series races in 2023. He subbed for an injured Chase Elliott in five of those, and an injured Alex Bowman in three. Most notably, Berry nabbed a runner-up finish in Elliott’s car in the April race at Richmond (Va.) Raceway. He started 30th and showed his race craft throughout the 400-lap event before taking the checkered flag 1.535 seconds behind winner Kyle Larson. Berry also garnered a top-10 result in Elliott’s car in the March race on the Phoenix Raceway mile oval. In that race, he started 17th and drove his way to a 10th-place result.

● In the NASCAR Xfinity Series, Berry has earned two of his five career victories on tracks one-mile or less. He scored his first series win in his 13th career Xfinity Series start in April 2021 at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway oval. It was his first career race on the half-mile paperclip-shaped oval, and he won from the 29th spot on the starting grid, leading 95 laps along the way. In his three starts on the mile oval at Dover (Del.) Motor Speedway, Berry claimed a victory in the April 2022 race, which was sandwiched by runner-up finishes in 2021 and 2023, giving him an average Xfinity Series finishing position of 1.7 at the track.

● As Berry takes over for retired Stewart-Haas Racing veteran Kevin Harvick, crew chief Rodney Childers remains the shot-caller for the No. 4 team in 2024. Berry and Childers worked together during the NASCAR offseason, running several Late Model races in the No. 62 car for Kevin Harvick Inc. The duo’s best finish of third came at Hickory (N.C.) Motor Speedway in the Fall Brawl, their first time working together at a racetrack. The Berry-Childers combination also raced at Florence (S.C.) Motor Speedway in the South Carolina 400, where they won the pole position, and at Crisp Motorsports Park in Cordele, Georgia, during the track’s Speedfest event.

● SUNNYD has partnered with Berry and the No. 4 team ahead of the 2024 season, donning the vibrant orange and blue SUNNYD colors during this weekend’s exhibition race at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, as well as the points-paying season opening Daytona 500 Feb. 18 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway. SUNNYD will continue to support the No. 4 team throughout the 38-week season as an associate partner featured on Berry’s firesuit, and the team’s hauler and toolboxes.

Josh Berry, Driver of the No. 4 SUNNYD Ford Mustang

What are your expectations for your first race at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum?

“I am definitely excited to go to the Coliseum. I think it’s a really cool event – having watched the races there, it’s really fun to get the chance to compete there. I think, for the race, it is a good opportunity for us to run well. Obviously, with my background being in short-track racing, I think it should help, but I definitely think it will be a unique experience.”

What aspects of your short-track-racing skillset do you expect will translate to your efforts this weekend?

“My experience running Late Models on short tracks is going to be useful. I think how the race will unfold will be similar to some of the bullring events I have run over the years. I think the Coliseum itself is going to be its own animal. The NextGen car is going to be a challenge, but it should be a lot of fun.”

How much are you banking on the team’s previous two visits to the Coliseum to help you behind the wheel this weekend?

“Obviously, Rodney is a great asset, having gone to the Coliseum a couple of times. I think between leaning on the No. 4 team and Rodney and the experience they have had, and Ryan (Preece) running really well there last year, we have a lot of knowledge there. Once we get there and get a practice session under our belts, and feeling out how we unload, we can adjust and expand on what we need to make the main event.”

What’s the shortest track you’ve raced on in your career?

“The shortest track I have ran in my career was a race at Wake County Speedway in the CARS Tour, which is in Raleigh, North Carolina, and it was a quarter mile. It was probably the closest in terms of size and shape that the Coliseum is, and it was a unique race. The corners are tight and things happen fast. Contact is inevitable but, with that said, you have to give and take. I think you will have to be aggressive but also be mindful of keeping your nose clean and maintaining track position.”

How valuable was it to already work with your new crew chief Rodney Childers in Late Models during the offseason?

“Overall, I think it was just a fun experience. I think it gave the two of us a chance to work together in a competitive environment and I think it put to bed any questions we had on how we communicate with each other. I know the Cup Series season is going to be different than what we did but, when I left there, I was 100-percent assured and confident in Rodney and what he will do to get the No. 4 team prepared each week. More than anything, I think it was just a good experience for all of us, and it was nice to race a little in the offseason.”

Ford Performance Even Preview: Clash at the Coliseum

CLASH AT THE COLISEUM NOTES
Sunday, Nov. 4 — NASCAR Cup Series, 8 p.m. ET (FOX)

For the third straight year, the NASCAR schedule will open up with the Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum in Los Angeles, CA. Joey Logano won the inaugural race in 2022, which marked the first event for the NASCAR Next Gen Mustang. Overall, Ford has won the Clash 10 times.

NEW NASCAR CUP SERIES MUSTANG SET FOR DEBUT

The all-new 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Mustang will make its competitive debut this weekend in the Clash at the Coliseum. The car, which is based off the seventh-generation Mustang production model, is part of a plan to have Mustang race all around the world. This year’s NASCAR Cup Series version has been on-track once with that coming in early December when Ryan Blaney and Chris Buescher participated in a test at Phoenix Raceway. Since coming to the Cup Series in 2019, Mustang has won 52 races, including a pair of Daytona 500 victories and back-to-back driver championships.

LOOKING AT THE 2024 FORD CUP LINEUP

There have been a number of changes to the Ford lineup since the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season ended. The biggest changes have come at Stewart-Haas Racing, where retired drivers Kevin Harvick and Aric Almirola have been replaced by Josh Berry and Noah Gragson. Rick Ware Racing will also sport a pair of new drivers with Justin Haley signed on for the full season in the No. 51 Mustang and Kaz Grala set to run 25 events.

Driver – Car Number (Team)
Austin Cindric – No. 2 Ford Mustang (Team Penske)
Josh Berry – No. 4 Ford Mustang (Stewart-Haas Racing)
Brad Keselowski – No. 6 Ford Mustang (Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing)
Noah Gragson – No. 10 Ford Mustang (Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing)
Ryan Blaney – No. 12 Ford Mustang (Team Penske)
Chase Briscoe – No. 14 Ford Mustang (Stewart-Haas Racing)
Kaz Grala – No. 15 Ford Mustang (Rick Ware Racing)
Chris Buescher – No. 17 Ford Mustang (Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing)
Harrison Burton – No. 21 Ford Mustang (Wood Brothers Racing)
Joey Logano – No. 22 Ford Mustang (Team Penske)
Michael McDowell – No. 34 Ford Mustang (Front Row Motorsports)
Todd Gilliland – No. 38 Ford Mustang (Front Row Motorsports)
Ryan Preece – No. 41 Ford Mustang (Stewart-Haas Racing)
Justin Haley – No. 51 Ford Mustang (Rick Ware Racing)

PREECE READY TO POUNCE

Ryan Preece, making his full-time debut with Stewart-Haas Racing behind the wheel of the No. 41 Ford Mustang, nearly stole the show in last year’s Clash at the Coliseum until late-race issues sent him from the lead to a Ford-best seventh-place finish. Preece started 16th and worked his way to the front, eventually passing Bubba Wallace for the lead with 68 laps to go. However, with 30 laps remaining he experienced issues with the fuel pump, enabling race-winner Martin Truex Jr. to pass for the lead with 24 laps left. Preece, who led a race-high 43 circuits, fell back a few more spots until eventually getting back under full power to finish inside the top 10.

HALEY HOPING FOR ANOTHER FAST START IN RWR DEBUT

Justin Haley will be making his debut with Ford and Rick Ware Racing this weekend in the No. 51 Mustang and he’s hoping to start things off like he did a year ago when he had the fastest qualifying time for the Clash. Haley circled the quarter-mile track in 13.413 seconds before finishing third in his heat race and 11th in the main event.

LOGANO WINS INAUGURAL CLASH AT THE COLISEUM

For the first time in NASCAR history, the Clash was held at a place other than the Daytona International Speedway as the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum hosted the event on February 6, 2022. The specially-made quarter-mile asphalt track delivered in the main event as Logano, who won his heat race, passed Kyle Busch on lap 116 and led the final 35 to become only the second Ford driver to win the Clash more than once. Logano, who also captured the event in 2017, joined Dale Jarrett (three-time winner) with multiple Ford victories.

KESELOWSKI KICK STARTS 2018 SEASON IN STYLE

In a foreshadowing of what the 2018 NASCAR Cup Series would look like, Brad Keselowski took Ford to victory lane in the Advance Auto Parts Clash at Daytona International Speedway. Keselowski led a Ford sweep of the top four finishing positions as he took the lead on lap 39 of the 75-lap feature and never looked back, holding off Joey Logano, Kurt Busch and Ryan Blaney, respectively. It marked the second straight Clash win for Ford and served as a springboard that saw the Blue Oval lead the series with 19 wins and capture the driver’s and manufacturer’s championships.

ELLIOTT CLAIMS FORD’S FIRST CLASH VICTORY

Bill Elliott became the first Ford driver to win a non-points event in the NASCAR Cup Series on February 8, 1987 when he captured the Busch Clash. The format that year was a single 20-lap run (50 miles) with no pit stop required. Elliott, who started on the pole in his No. 9 Coors Thunderbird after a blind draw, fell back to sixth on the start after Terry Labone and Ricky Rudd were involved in an accident on the first lap. On the ensuing restart, Elliott steadily reeled in leader Darrell Waltrip and passed him on lap eight. Elliott led the final 13 laps and won with an average speed of 197.802 mph, a record that still stands for the event. A week later, Elliott won his second Daytona 500.

The Clash has been held in some form since 1979 and Ford has won it 10 times by seven different drivers. The best stretch in the event for Ford undoubtedly came during a three-year winning streak in which Rusty Wallace, Mark Martin and Dale Jarrett all reached victory lane from 1998-2000. Jarrett owns three of Ford’s 10 victories (1996, 2000, 2004) in the event and on two of those occasions (1996 and 2000) he went on to win the Daytona 500.

FORD’S Busch Light CLASH WINNERS

1987 – Bill Elliott

1992 – Geoffrey Bodine

1996 – Dale Jarrett

1998 – Rusty Wallace

1999 – Mark Martin

2000 – Dale Jarrett

2004 – Dale Jarrett

Additionally, CELSIUS will also be showcased as LaJoie’s primary sponsor February 25 in the Ambetter Health 400 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, July 7 at the Chicago Street Course and August 24 at the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway. Spire Motorsports earned its inaugural NCS victory at the famed 2.5-mile Daytona Beach oval on July 7, 2019.

CELSIUS is a better-for-you, premium alternative to sugary energy drinks. Made with 7 Essential Vitamins, CELSIUS has the perfect balance of flavor and energy that serves as an awesome pick-me-up for active lifestyles. CELSIUS was created to help people LIVE FIT, exceed their goals and elevate their everyday lives.

“Celsius is proud to sponsor Corey LaJoie and Spire Motorsports for four of the 2024 NASCAR season races,” commented a CELSIUS spokesperson. “LaJoie is a great addition to our 2024 roster of competitive athletes, and we’re excited to help fuel him and the Spire garage with essential energy and see what they accomplish this race season.”

Every February since 1979, the annual pre-season NCS showcase had been hosted by Daytona International Speedway. In September 2021, NASCAR announced it would move the race from the 2.5-mile Daytona Beach superspeedway to a purpose-built, quarter-mile oval, constructed inside the iconic home of the University of Southern California Trojans football team. The 2024 installment will mark the third consecutive year NASCAR has hosted the race at the iconic downtown Los Angeles venue.

The L.A. Coliseum will also become the first stadium to host the Summer Olympics three times when it serves as the marquis destination for the 2028 games. The coliseum previously hosted the Summer Olympics in 1932 and 1984.

While LaJoie and his Ryan Sparks-led team struggled in the 2022 and 2023 editions of the Busch Light Clash, a strong run at Martinsville Speedway last fall and post-season testing at Phoenix Raceway proved to make a difference for the group’s short-track package.

“I’m thrilled to kick off another race season with Celsius,” said LaJoie. “I’m confident we can bring a car that drives well and has some speed this year. I think restructuring how we attack the Clash, in terms of vehicle dynamics, is going to be a plus. We’ve had a couple good SIM sessions and worked really hard during the off season to be racing for a chance to bring our Celsius Camaro to Victory Lane in 2024”

Practice and heat races for NASCAR’s annual pre-season exhibition race will be televised live on FS1 Saturday, February 3, beginning at 6 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST). The first of four qualifying races will take the green flag at 8:30 p.m. EST.

FOX’s live television coverage of the last chance qualifying race, followed by the Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum, will take the green flag Sunday, February 4, beginning at 6:30 p.m. EST. NASCAR’s third visit to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum will be broadcast live on the Motor Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio (Ch. 90).

TRD USA, Mobil 1™ expand relationship beginning with 2024 motorsports season

Partnership to further celebrate the brand’s love of racing across eight motorsports series throughout 2024 season and beyond

SPRING, Texas (Tuesday, January 30, 2024) – Mobil 1™ and TRD USA (Toyota Racing Development) announced today the first-of-its-kind expansion of the iconic brands’ long-standing motorsports relationship, which includes Mobil 1 primary assets across all three of Toyota’s NASCAR Cup Series teams – Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), 23XI Racing (23XI), and LEGACY MOTOR CLUB (LEGACY M.C.) – along with continued primary placements within multiple other racing series that Toyota competes in including NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series, IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, ARCA Menards Series, Late Models and more.

“Mobil 1 is proud to be synonymous with motorsports, and we are thrilled to take that to the next level with Toyota Racing Development,” shares Rob Shearer, Director of Global Sponsorships and Marketing Services, on behalf of Mobil 1. “Toyota Racing Development shares the same passion for performance as we do and, together, we will work to continue to show how the right motor oil can improve on-track performance and provide longevity for consumers’ vehicles. We are proud to compete in many different series and cheer on our racers all season long.”

The strategic partnership between Mobil 1 and TRD aims to continue to develop technology advantages across series that help teams win, provide exclusive access to driver stories on and off the track, continue to grow the base of fans that love racing and driving, and work together to develop the next generation of racers. This will be further formalized beyond the partnership with three of the most exciting NASCAR teams to include driver development across several racing series and off-track within the growing off-road and overlanding cultures.

“TRD’s technical partnership with Mobil 1 has been integral to Toyota’s on-track performance and success over the past 20+ years,” explains David Wilson, president, TRD USA. “From winning the Indy 500 to championships in NASCAR, IMSA, NHRA and countless achievements in sports car, grass roots and dirt racing action, Mobil 1 has been the common denominator. As we begin another exciting racing season in 2024, we are honored to expand our partnership with Mobil 1.”

Mobil 1 high-performance synthetic motor oils are used by many of the world’s top race teams and celebrates over a decade of partnership with TRD. Mobil 1 was first named an official technology partner in 2010 with their support and lubricants helping Toyota drivers achieve multiple championships across several racing disciplines and several career defining victories.

Back-to-back NASCAR Cup Series Championship 4 driver Christopher Bell will lead off the increased partnership with Mobil 1 as the primary sponsor on his new Toyota Camry XSE at the Clash at the Coliseum this weekend. Bell will also have Mobil 1 backing for the Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond Raceway in March and Talladega Superspeedway in April. JGR will also have several Mobil 1 primary races in the NASCAR Xfinity Series with Chandler Smith.

“Mobil 1 and TRD have a long-standing history,” adds Bell. “I have been a small part of it running the dirt cars for them and even having Mobil 1 on my own sprint car a couple of years ago. It is an honor to have them as a partner on the Cup side.”

After many career-bests achieved for both of 23XI’s drivers in the 2023 season, both Tyler Reddick and Bubba Wallace will run primary Mobil 1 races this year. Tyler Reddick will kick off the team’s primary assets at the spring Phoenix race and return to Mobil 1 colors at Richmond Raceway in August, while Bubba Wallace will have Mobil 1 as his primary sponsor at the first road course race of the season at the Circuit of the Americas in March.

“It’s really awesome for Mobil 1 to come on board,” shares Reddick. “When you look at a brand like Mobil 1, the technology, the innovation, the things they continue to improve and push – it is great to have a partner like that involved with our race team at 23XI, because honestly, we are trying to do some of the same things. I am excited to be working with them this upcoming year, and hopefully we can find their race car in victory lane.”

“I’m excited to have Mobil 1 on my Toyota this season,” adds Wallace. “They have done a lot inside the sport – you have seen them on various teams and cars, so to carry that iconic brand in 2024 is really cool. The connection with Toyota makes it tie in all together and hopefully carry a lot of speed and a good time, so we are looking forward to the opportunity.”

LEGACY M.C.’s John Hunter Nemechek will close out the season for Mobil 1. Nemechek, a graduate of the Toyota driver development (TD2) program, and Mobil 1 visited Victory Lane many times together through the years. Mobil 1 was Nemechek’s primary partner for his first Toyota win – in NASCAR Truck Series action at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in March 2021. Since joining Toyota and Mobil 1 in 2021, Nemechek has won 15 races across the Xfinity and Truck Series, with Mobil 1 as the primary for six of those victories.

Nemechek’s first Cup Series race in the Mobil 1 livery is the iconic Labor Day Classic at Darlington Raceway with additional primary races at Atlanta Motor Speedway in September, and the season finale at Phoenix Raceway in November.

“2024 is going to be a big year for us, and I’m very thankful to have Mobil 1 and its continued support once again this season. We have been fortunate to share a lot of success over the past three years and made plenty of great memories together along the way,” says Nemechek. “Their commitment to Toyota and TRD across so many different forms of racing really shows their passion and dedication to motorsports as a whole, and to be able to represent them in my return to the Cup Series with LEGACY M.C. will be special. I’m looking forward to kicking things off with them in a big way.”

Mobil 1 will also continue to be a valuable part of the TD2 program with many primary schemes, including in NASCAR Truck Series action with TRICON Garage and driver Taylor Gray; in ARCA and Late Model racing with Brent Crews and Isabella Robusto; and World of Outlaws races with Buddy Kofoid. Jade Avedisian, who made history in 2023 as the first woman to win a dirt midget championship, will have Mobil 1 as one of her primary partners in her dirt midget races and during her full season run at the Toyota GR Cup title.

Kalitta Motorsports will also continue to receive Mobil 1 support through the TRD partnership in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season. The Kalitta Motorsports and Mobil 1 relationship – which has been in place since 2020 – achieved championship level success this year as Doug Kalitta won his first NHRA Top Fuel world title. Kalitta Motorsports will once again utilize the Mobil 1 Drag Racing motor oil in their Top Fuel dragsters driven by Kalitta and Shawn Langdon, and J.R. Todd’s Toyota GR Supra Funny Car.

The Lexus Racing GT3 program will also continue its partnership with Mobil 1, including having a presence on the championship winning Vasser Sullivan No. 14 Lexus RC F GT3 in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Mobil 1 has a rich history in motorsport competition, which dates to the early 1970s with its early foray into rally competition. Mobil 1 entered the world of Formula 1 as a sponsor of the Williams Formula 1™ team in 1978 and entered NASCAR with the sponsorship of Rusty Wallace’s No. 27 car in 1987. Today, Mobil 1 remains a fixture on the F1 circuit, NASCAR tracks, and extreme motorsport races such as the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. With a deep history in motorsports and supporting pre-eminent race teams around the globe, Mobil 1 aims to inspire drivers and fans everywhere, celebrate the love of driving, and elevate the passion for motorsports around the globe.
