Daytona International Speedway, 1988 – Richard Petty

Richard Petty was left temporarily blind after a crash on the Daytona 500 in 1988. On lap 106 of the race, his car got hit from behind, flipped over multiple times, and collided with another vehicle. What’s especially curious about this accident is that Petty’s father also had a horrendous NASCAR accident on that same track in 1961. 

Daytona International Speedway, 2015 – Austin Dillon

The Daytona Coke Zero 400 race in 2015 saw one of the most horrific crashes in NASCAR history. The accident involved a chain reaction of multiple vehicles near the end of the race. Most notably, Austin Dillon got spun into a wall and flew into the track’s safety netting, throwing debris onto the stands. Fortunately, he and the other drivers involved managed to walk away from the accident.

Talladega Superspeedway, 2012 – A 25-Car Pileup

You may have heard about the 2012 Good Sam Roadside Assistance 500 race in reference to the “Big One.” Of course, it’s not the only Big One, as that term refers to every pileup involving five or more cars. Still, the 2012 race on Talladega saw one of the “Biggest Ones,” as Tony Stewart hooked bumpers with Michael Waltrip in the final lap, which threw Stewart into the more than two dozen vehicles racing behind them. Fortunately, there were no fatalities. 

Daytona International Speedway, 1984 – Ricky Rudd

The 1984 Busch Clash on Daytona saw a horrific accident for Ricky Rudd after he lost control of his Ford due to a bump from the back. The driver survived with “just” a concussion and severely swollen eyes, but that’s not what made this accident famous. The truly memorable part is that Rudd decided to race the next week, even though he was still concussed. He even had to tape his swollen eyes open with duct tape so that he could race. This whole hullaballoo became the reason NASCAR, after decades of accidents, finally implemented mandatory physical exams for the drivers before every race. 

Daytona International Speedway, 2001 – Dale Earnhardt Sr. 

The infamous 2001 Daytona 500 race on the Daytona International Speedway saw Dale “The Intimidator” Earnhardt spin out of control after a touch from Sterling Marlin’s car on the last lap of the race. As a result, Earnhardt ended up in front of Ken Schrader’s vehicle, ending a decades-long career. There is a silver lining, at least, and it’s that The Intimidator is succeeded by his son, Dale Earnhardt Jr., who has also grown into a famous NASCAR driver in his own right.

Daytona International Speedway, 1960 – A 37-Car Pileup

Probably the most infamous NASCAR accident is the 1960 Daytona Modified Sportsman Race. Not only did that race see some of the sport’s legends (including Junior Johnson, Edward Glenn “Fireball” Roberts, and Ralph Earnhardt) compete against each other, but it was also the scene of a monumental 37-car pileup. The accident occurred on the first lap, just two minutes into the race. Stunningly, there were no fatalities, though there were plenty of injuries.

That race is why NASCAR reduced the number of competing cars from 68 to 43. The maximum number of cars was further reduced from 43 to 40 in 2016 when NASCAR introduced a new charter system for the racing teams.

Respect is earned: Broadcaster Ralph Sheheen’s tales of ‘The Intimidator’

Dale Earnhardt always intimidated his competitors out on the racetrack, as well as the press who came asking questions. Broadcaster Ralph Sheheen, however, refused to break, despite the Intimidator’s best efforts.

Detailing an interview he had with Earnhardt at the Winston one year, Sheheen says Earnhardt “dug into his kidneys like there was no tomorrow trying to get me to break.” Sheheen not only went about his business but went on with the interview longer than he initially planned, just to prove to ‘Big E’ that he was no pushover like some of his colleagues. Sheheen says that the interview made Earnhardt gain respect for the California native, which proved a very valuable asset. 

Growing up in California, Sheheen watched whatever form of racing he could, and always made time for the superspeedway events that NASCAR had to offer. After a stint calling events in a given week, including Motocross and fashion shows at a local bar, Sheheen got his big break. 

“When I graduated from college, there was an IMSA season finale in Del Mar, California,” Sheheen explained. “I called up about being the PA announcer, and they said they had all their PA guys, but we need a TV announcer for pit road on the ESPN broadcast. They said, ‘Have you ever done TV?’ Oh yeah, sure, I’ve done a ton of TV. Well, I’ve never been on TV a day in my life,” Sheheen said, recounting the experience. “But I figured, hey, the door’s cracked open, you got to come on through, you know?”

Like so many in the motorsports broadcasting field, Sheheen’s longevity is nearly as impressive as his accolades themselves, such as his induction into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 2023. Sheheen says there’s not necessarily a secret to a long career, and also says that you can’t make everyone happy. 

“It’s very subjective, so you’re not going to like everybody,” he said. There’s people that are going to love me and despise ‘The Postman’. There’s going to be people that love Steve (Post) and despise me. That’s fine. That’s the way it goes. It’s just human nature. I think everybody is pretty good at what we do. And then it becomes subjective as to who you like. After that, I think you just have to find your groove, whatever that is. Some guys like Mike Joy are really good at history. Dick Berggren was outstanding at the technical side of things. He could tell you all about the nuts and bolts of the race car. I tend to go more of an enthusiastic level when I’m doing play-by-play. So you have to find your lane and try to stay there. You need to know what your real strengths are and play to that. And after that, you have to be a good person, got to be easy to work with. Don’t be a diva. Don’t come in thinking you’re better than everyone else on the crew, because you’re not. And you can easily be replaced.”

Sheheen was also firm on facts and journalistic integrity, telling a fantastic story involving Dale Earnhardt in the process. 

“You’ve got to do what you tell the athletes you’re going to do. Perfect example, there was this one time in Atlanta, Earnhardt Sr. had the flu. He really wasn’t feeling good. My producer really wanted to hear from Dale on this. So I went over, knocked on his door, and I said ‘Hey man, I got to ask you one question. One, Dale, Just one.’ And he stepped out to do the interview, and I asked him one question, the one question I knew my producer needed. Even if I thought of a second one, there was no way I was asking him that question. I told him I had to do one. If I did two, he never answers that second question, and I never get another (interview) with him. So whatever it is, you’ve got to be true to what you tell them you’re going to do.” 

After I made a quick mention of Dale Earnhardt liking to mess with the press, Sheheen came out with his best anecdote of the day about an encounter he had with Earnhardt at the Winston. 

“We were on the air, and I’m supposed to interview him pre-race. They used to run a limited sportsman category prior to the (Cup) race, and Kerry Earnhardt was running in it. And Dale knew we were supposed to do this interview live, but he got stuck up watching Kerry’s race and missed the interview. And he comes running out and he goes, ‘Oh man, I’m so sorry.’ I go, ‘don’t worry about it.’

It’s Dale Earnhardt. They’ll take that interview whenever they can get it. So I told my producer, hey, Dale’s ready now. And they said, sure enough, let’s come on down. So I come walking over, he (Dale) goes ‘Hey, girls, come over here.’ And there’s these two young ladies standing over there. He gets them in the middle between us, you know, whatever Dale wants to do, you just do it.

Dale’s in a great mood, and we start doing our interview. He says, ‘all right girls, get out of here, Sheheen and I need to talk business.’ So they get out, and then he scoots in next to me and he reaches around behind me, and he is digging into my kidneys like there’s no tomorrow. He’s doing everything he can to get me to break. And I purposely went longer with the interview just because there was no way I was going to break. I couldn’t let him get away with that because I knew what that would mean. If he got one up on you, then it’s game over. He always tried to test you. If you could pass his test, it was good. And as he was walking away, he turns around and pow, just let me have it on the shoulder.”

Earnhardt was also the subject of Sheheen’s favorite memory from his over 3-and-a-half decade career covering racing, though it was far from a victorious moment for the Intimidator. 

“Remember the year (1997) he flipped down the backstretch and got out of the car, and then he goes into the ambulance and sees the tires are still full of air, and he gets back into the car and drives it around? Well, at the end of the race, our producer needed someone to go interview Dale. Everybody else is tied up and I didn’t realize nobody had gone to Dale yet. So I said, ‘I’ll go get him.’ So I go running to get to Dale, and I come around the corner and he’s sitting there in this smoking heap of metal, and he’s standing next to this torn-up race car and there’s all these media guys around. Well, we’re live TV, so I just dive into the pile, and he sees me coming through with the microphone, and he reaches in and pulls me through, and he goes, ‘What do you need?’ I said, “Well I’ve got to interview you, but my battery died on our cameraman back here, so they’re bringing us a new battery. I’m down for a minute.”

He goes, ‘Well let’s go back to the hauler.’ So he goes walking through the crowd to go to the hauler, and he reaches back and grabs me and pulls me through, and I’m screaming, ‘I’ve got Dale, I’ve got Dale!’ We get over to the hauler and he stands on this ice chest, and he tells the rest of the crowd, ‘I’m not going to do anyone else’s interviews until I’m done talking to Ralph.’ I’m sitting there thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, this is amazing, right?’ So we finally got the battery on that camera ready to go, and we knocked out that interview. And that was a really big moment because the respect he had for me to do that was unbelievable. I’m still thinking about that today, I can’t believe I got that from him. But I earned that. That goes back to what we were talking about. Had I not done just that one question (at Atlanta) that one time, he wouldn’t have done that for me then.”

Sheheen’s relationship with Dale Earnhardt is considered even more special by the television vet because many of his peers had no semblance of one themselves. 

“I knew reporters who were afraid to talk to him. I mean, just would not do it. I remember being in production meetings and a producer saying, ‘Hey, we need an interview with Earnhardt today. Who wants to do it?’ And I remember peers of mine going ‘No, not me.’ And once they had that in their head, it was over.”

So many journalists, reporters, and media personalities in the NASCAR garage are revered, and for good reason. But few men or women were able to break through the thick ice that seemed to stand between them and the greatest driver of the day. 

It didn’t seem to deter Ralph Sheheen. 

Young’s Motorsports Announces Expansion to Xfinity Series Competition With Leland Honeyman Jr. Full-Time in 2024

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (January 4, 2024) Young’s Motorsports announced the organization’s expansion into the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2024. Leland Honeyman Jr. will pilot the No. 42 Xfinity car full-time, beginning with the season opener at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway (Fla.) on Sat. Feb. 17, 2024.

Honeyman, 18, returns to the Mooresville, N.C.-based organization, where he ran an impressive ARCA Menards Series East Series campaign, finishing third in the 2022 championship standings.

Honeyman also has eight starts in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, where he claimed a best finish of 21st at the Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway ROVAL this past October.

“We’ve been asked about running Xfinity more than a few times over the years, and this time, it just made sense,” Young’s Motorsports team principal Tyler Young said.

“Leland (Honeyman) ran the (ARCA) East Series for us in 2022, and he did a great job learning, giving feedback, and being competitive against several other established (ARCA) East programs. His efforts in the Xfinity Series this season show he’s continuing to improve and make the most of every opportunity he is a part of.

“We’ve already found success in the ARCA Series and have a blast working together. I look forward to taking this step with the Xfinity Series this season.”

Honeyman added, “In 2024, I’m thrilled to be racing full-time for Young’s Motorsports in their newly launched Xfinity team. Joining them as they enter this exciting series, I’m confident about our collective potential for the upcoming season. The prospect of racing full-time in Xfinity adds an extra layer of excitement, and I can’t wait to contribute to our team’s journey and make our mark on the track.”

The Phoenix, Ariz. native began honing his racing skills at the tender age of two racing Quads. By four years old, he moved into Trophy Karts and then collected three series championships in off-road racing Trophy Karts.

After an instrumental tenure in Go Karts, he moved into the Bandolero competition in 2015 and was crowned a Bandolero National Champion two years later. From there, he moved into Limited Late Models before graduating to the Carolina Pro Late Model Series division in 2021, where he earned championship-runner-up honors and picked up an astounding victory in the annual Hickory (N.C.) Motor Speedway Fall Brawl.

Young’s Motorsports was established in 2009, owns 472 Truck Series starts with two victories, and has competed in 26 races across the ARCA Menards Series platforms since 2021.

The United Rentals 300 (120 laps | 300 miles) is the first of thirty-three (33) NASCAR Xfinity Series races on the 2024 schedule. Practice will take place on Fri., Feb. 16, from 4:35 p.m. – 5:25 p.m., and the qualifying session begins on Sat., Feb. 17, at 11:30 a.m. The field will take the green flag shortly after 5:00 p.m. with live coverage on FS1.

The Parker 400 event will begin with a community desert cleanup on January 6th, presented by Tread Lightly, where participants will have the opportunity to win prizes for helping remove illegally dumped trash. On January 11th, the Parker Downtown Experience will showcase top off-road racing brands, local cuisine, and vendors in the heart of downtown. This family friendly event will be free and open to the public from 8am to 6pm. There will be Qualifying racing out at the CRIT Gauntlet that day as well.

Rexy Bulks up for WeatherTech Return, Stomping up to GTD Pro Class

ST. CHARLES, Ill. (January 4, 2024). – After months of anticipation and speculation, AO Racing has officially confirmed the team’s 2024 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s Porsche GTD Pro entry will return as Rexy, the ferociously friendly GT3 Rawr. Rexy the fan-favorite Tyrannosaurus Rex has been spending time in the gym, getting bulked up for his step up from GTD to GTD Pro, also adding Porsche factory driver Michael Christensen to the lineup for the Rolex 24 At Daytona, alongside Sebastian Priaulx and Laurin Heinrich.

“Rexy is ready to step up to GTD Pro,” said Team Principal Gunnar Jeannette. “The public welcomed our GT3 Rawr with open arms and it was a no-brainer to bring Rexy back for another season of racing. The addition of Michael to the team only strengthens our effort as we advance to the GTD Pro class.”

Danish racing driver Christensen began his Porsche career in 2012 when he joined the Porsche young driver program, the next year becoming an official Porsche factory driver. The 24 Hour of Le Mans winner and FIA World Endurance Championship champion will be a strong addition to the team for the most demanding race of the year, the Rolex 24 At Daytona.

“I’m very pleased to join AO Racing for the Rolex 24 at Daytona,” said Christensen. “It’s a great team, with a lot of talented people and a good driver lineup. I truly believe that we should be in a strong position to fight for a top position!”

During the off season, Rexy’s handlers have been running full steam ahead in their preparations for the exciting new season ahead. While Rexy has been training those biceps to race the all-pro competition, the team from St. Charlies, Illinois has been hard at work preparing and testing the Porsche 911 GT3 R, getting ready for the first event of the season, the Roar Before the 24. The series-wide test will be the first stint of testing for the entire field before the season officially kicks off with the Rolex 24 At Daytona, January 25-28. NASCAR Drivers Austin Dillon, Ryan Vargas and Myatt Snider Join Inaugural Pit Road Pickleball Tournament

CONCORD, NC (Jan. 4, 2024) – Next week, Speedway Children’s Charities’ Charlotte chapter is set to transform the iconic pit road at Charlotte Motor Speedway into the battleground for a unique and charitable event, a Pickleball tournament. Presented by Sonic Automotive and EchoPark Automotive, participants are promised a day of spirited competition, family fun and community engagement on Thursday, Jan. 11, all in support of Speedway Children’s Charities.

Players may have the chance to face against 2017 Coca-Cola 600 winner Austin Dillon, accompanied by others from Richard Childress Racing. NASCAR Xfinity drivers Ryan Vargas and Myatt Snider will join Dillon, along with other NASCAR industry personalities to raise money for SCC, to compete for bragging rights and the ultimate prize, a custom championship trophy.

Pickleball enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels are invited to be part of this exciting tournament featuring a Round Robin tournament-style competition. In addition to the thrilling pickleball action, attendees will enjoy music, delicious food from vendors and engage in friendly yard games set up in the infield at America’s Home for Racing. Spectators are encouraged to attend this first-of-its-kind event with a $5 donation to SCC.

“Speedway Children’s Charities is always looking for creative ways to raise much-needed funds for children in need, and this event is no different,” said director of Speedway Children’s Charities Charlotte Chapter Taylor Kirby. “Kicking off the new year with our new Pit Road Pickleball tournament not only offers a unique twist on this popular sport, it provides an opportunity for families, friends and the community to come together for a day of fun and philanthropy.”

Sean Creech Motorsport completes driver lineup ahead of the Rolex 24

Full season drivers Willsey and Barbosa to be joined by multi-series race winner Nolan Siegel and European open wheel standout Jonny Edgar

JUPITER, Fla. (4 January 2024) – With preseason testing complete, Sean Creech Motorsport (SCM) has set its lineup for the 2024 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s season opener, the 62nd Rolex 24 at Daytona (Saturday, January 27 at 1:40 p.m.). The race marks the first round of the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup, which will feature five endurance events for the first time in 2024.
Full season SCM drivers Lance Willsey and João Barbosa will be joined by a pair of talented 19-year-olds: Nolan Siegel, who helped pace the team to a second-place finish at Daytona last January, and European junior open wheel star Jonny Edgar. Willsey and Barbosa are back for their fourth year with the team, the first behind the wheel of the No. 33 SCM Focal One Ligier JS P217, as SCM moves to the LMP2 class in 2024.

“We’re happy to have Lance, João and Nolan back with the team, and to have Jonny as a new addition,” said team principal Sean Creech. “It’s a great lineup to start the season.”

The 2024 Rolex 24 will mark the 15th edition of the endurance racing classic for Willsey, which includes the 2016 race in which he competed in two different cars. The Boston resident has raced at Daytona in a multitude of series including the IMSA Prototype Challenge and its successor, the VP Racing SportsCar Challenge, the Koni Challenge (now the Michelin Pilot Challenge), Historic Sportscar Racing, and the Ferrari Challenge.

“The age of our lineup up looks a bit like a barbell, doesn’t it?” quipped Willsey. “I’m 62, João is 48, and the two youngsters are all of 19. I’m very much looking forward to the full season with João, we had some great achievements in the LMP3 car – and I’m looking forward to being a part of the reintroduction of the Ligier P2 car. We’re excited to have Nolan back this year, he was a welcome late addition last year. It’s been good to have him on board early, through testing.

“We’re also happy to introduce Jonny Edgar to the US sports car audience,” Willsey continued. “We’ve been impressed with him, both in and out of the car. We’re confident he will make a significant contribution through the Roar and the 24. It’s been good for us to be able to help some of the young drivers gain a foothold in the US, drivers like Malthe Jakobsen and Nico Pino, who drove with us in the past.”

Four-time Rolex 24 winner Barbosa, a resident of nearby Ormond Beach, Fla., has contested 21 of the last 23 races with teams that have amassed stunning statistics at Daytona: those 21 cars have led over 2,000 laps and completed over 14,000 (a laps complete percentage of 93%). That puts the mileage chart for the cars Barbosa has raced in the Rolex 24 at over 50,000 miles – or twice around the world. But Barbosa knows that entering the race with the reintroduced Ligier LMP2 car will not mean the same mindset as the past three years, with the tried-and-true Ligier JS P320.

“It’s a different approach this year,” said Barbosa. “The team and the drivers know the work that will come this month to be ready for 24 hours. It’s proven to be reliable so far and the team has done a great job. We’ll continue to work on the car, continue to understand what it wants. We’ve lost half our test time to weather or track cancellations, so we know there’s more work to do at the Roar. But we have a good lineup for the 24. We know how quick Nolan is and Jonny really proved that he can be quick at the test, and his approach, feedback and speed were quite good.”

SCM’s two young guns will make good use of that knowledge base, though both come to Daytona with significant racing resumes. Siegel, 19, has raced professional since the age of 14, winning races on every level of the Road to Indy junior open wheel ladder system. The Palo Alto, Calif. native added sports car racing to his repertoire in 2021, competing in the Michelin Pilot Challenge, IMSA Prototype Challenge, Asian Le Mans Series, and the IMSA WeatherTech series over the past three years. Siegel has earned podiums in both of his two Rolex 24 starts, including last year’s second-place finish with SCM.

“It’s great to be back with SCM,” said Siegel. “It’s fun to work with people who are so passionate about what they do. It’s a different approach this year since we’re developing the car rather than focusing on fine-tuning and putting in a quick qualifying lap. Testing has been fun for the drivers and the engineers, taking big swings at it, trying radical ideas. This is one of the first endurance races where I’m not the ‘new kid’ and hopefully I can help Jonny get through his first Rolex 24. But I’ll still take the opportunity to learn as much as I can from Lance and João. There might not be anyone on the grid with more endurance racing experience and success than João does, and there’s always more that I can learn.”

New to the team for this year’s Rolex 24 will be 19-year-old Edgar. The Whitehaven, UK native has won numerous national and international karting championships including SKUSA SuperNats and the CIK-FIA European Championships and was named to the Red Bull Junior Team in 2017. Edgar began racing on the European junior open wheel circuits in 2019, earning success in Spanish F4, Italian F4, and capturing the 2020 ADAC Formula 4 championship. He raced in FIA Formula 3 last year, earning a victory at Monza, and contested a McLaren GT3 in the British GT Championship finale.

“I was impressed with the team and the car at the test last month,” said Edgar. “If we keep going in the direction we were going at the test, we’ll be in good shape. It seemed to me that technique and feel were quite similar to other cars I’ve driven, but obviously the multi-class aspect as well as the night running are very different from what I’m used to. But I have very experienced teammates and will learn a great deal at the Roar, all the little bits that add up in a 24-hour race. I’ll continue my gym work between now and then but there’s the mental side of endurance racing as well, managing your time out of car, so I’ll focus on that as well.”

Finishing on the podium at Daytona is a significant accomplishment but for Creech, finishing second three years in a row is no consolation. He knows the process will continue with the new car but feels confident that his talented drivers and crew have what it takes to put the Ligier JS P217 up front. The car has paced 698 trouble-free laps in four days of testing, but Creech rues the loss of four additional test days due to weather and a re-pave of Daytona’s Bus Stop.

“Finishing second at Daytona is fine, but that’s not why we’re here,” said Creech. “We’re here to win – and we have the crew and the drivers to do that. We’re not as far along with the car as we’d like to be, having lost those four test days, but we’ll focus on finalizing the setup and getting Jonny completely up to speed on the IMSA regulations at the Roar.

“It is a big challenge to take on a car that is basically all new, as we are in a class full of teams that have a great deal of experience with the ORECA. But we are focused on learning as much as we can, finding a good window with the car, and executing as a team for the entire event. If we can do that – and let this strong team of drivers do their thing in the car – I think we will be in good shape. The Ligier JS P217 has proven to be quite reliable so far and we look to continue that trend, in collaboration with Ligier. We appreciate the commitment they have made to the re-introduction of the chassis.”
