“I have brought many new partners to our NASCAR team over the years,” said Tony Priscaro, VP, Sales and Marketing for JD Motorsports. “However, BeONE Sports is a partner I couldn’t be more excited about. Their technology will not only help our race team, but it will also help every NASCAR fan. Everyone has or knows someone who is involved in a sport at the youth level on up. “This technology is really amazing,” said Brennan Poole, driver of the No. 6 BeONE Sports Chevrolet. “I am going to use it myself, to see how I stack up.”

Successful debut weekend for PT Autosport at Sebring

Alex Sedgwick impresses in his Porsche Deluxe Carrera Cup North America debut

SEBRING, Fla. (21 March 2023) – PT Autosport made its Porsche Deluxe Carrera Cup North America debut at Sebring International Raceway this weekend, part of the “Super Sebring” weekend that included the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.

Teaming with defending series champions JDX Racing, PT Autosport had a long list of firsts to take on for the weekend as driver Alex Sedgwick made his IMSA debut on board the No. 98 JDX Racing with PT Autosport Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car.

Sedgwick looked to learn as much as he could, and quickly, as he took on two practice sessions, one chance at qualifying, and two 40-minute races on Thursday that saw the 24-year-old Englishman earn two top 12 finishes – and earn the notice of many in the Porsche paddock.

Mother Nature threw just about every different weather condition possible at the 41-car field through Wednesday’s practice and qualifying sessions. The first practice took the green flag on an uncharacteristically cloudy and chilly morning but Sedgwick managed the changing conditions well, setting the seventh quickest time while posting the most laps in the session (14). In the second practice, he consistently set lap times within a second of the leaders, posting the sixth-fastest time before rain began to fall.

“We decided to do a few laps in the wet to feel out what it was like with the ABS, which will be good experience when we have a rain race later in the year,” said Sedgwick.

By the afternoon’s qualifying session, the more typical warm and humid conditions had returned, though with a slowly warming racetrack surface temperature. Sedgwick gained speed with each lap, reaching fifth position before slotting into the eighth spot on the race one starting grid.

Race One

The green flag flew at 9:15 a.m. EDT under bright blue and sunny skies, with ambient temperatures of 71F and track temps at 61F. The field was tightly bunched through the first few corners and Sedgwick did not have a space to slot into, finding himself shuffled back to 12th position.

On lap seven, Sedgwick threw the car to the outside in turn one and made the ambitious maneuver stick, taking 11th position – and earning significant TV time and kudos from IMSA Radio calling the race. Sedgwick bided his time and then, with 12 minutes remaining, made the move into the top 10 with another solid pass.

In addition to carving his way forward, Sedgwick had to work to avoid the perils that come with close, one-design racing. With eight minutes to go, the two cars ahead of Sedgwick came together, with the lead car spinning away. Sedgwick avoided the combatants and deftly slid into eighth position, holding that position to the checkered flag.

Sedgwick set his quick lap of the race just before the halfway mark, with a lap at 2:03.545.

“I didn’t do as good a job as I could on getting the tires and the brakes up to temp on those early laps, but that will come with experience,” said Sedgwick. “Once the temps and the pace came back, I was able to focus on regaining positions. It’s hard to pass because of the ABS, which minimizes mistakes, so I had to be creative – turns one and 17 are my strongest sectors so I knew I’d have to make a couple of hairy moves to get through. Later in the race, I could see how aggressive the guys were ahead of me, so I had a feeling something was going to happen – glad we weren’t caught up in it!”

Race two

Sedgwick took the green flag from 11th once again, carefully maneuvered his way through the frenetic first lap, losing only one position. Also in a near repeat of the morning, Sedgwick began laying down solid lap times within a second of the leaders and pursuing a spirited battle to retake 11th position. Sedgwick set his quick lap of the race on lap eight with a circuit of 2:04.528.

Throughout the 40-minute race, Sedgwick made every attempt to get past the car ahead, but to no avail – also a hallmark of one-make racing. Despite the race-long attack, Sedgwick settled for a 12th place finish – but with the distinction of bringing home a completely pristine Porsche GT3 Cup car.

“I think after having some time to decompress, I’ll be relatively happy or satisfied at least,” said Sedgwick. “It was a bit of a trial by fire, because it was such a compressed schedule. We were on the back foot after qualifying, which certainly put us back in traffic but that’s part of learning. I’ve been racing stock cars for a while, where you have no aero dependency, so I have more to consider now before making a move. As soon as you get stuck behind someone for a lap or two, like you have to reset and start again.

“But the car ran flawlessly and the JDX team has been amazing – they have a ton of experience. We’re up against a lot of drivers who really know these cars so it’s been really good for me to learn this week. On the whole, a pretty solid debut but definitely room to work on and improve.”

“I am happy with our performance this past weekend and ecstatic about the team we have assembled, starting with the tone from the top in our co-founders – Jason Myers, our team principal, and our first driver partner, Alex Sedgwick,” said Dais. “Alex put his heart out there on the track and gave it his all. We will gather and evaluate our data from this past weekend and strengthen our mindset and resolve heading into the Long Beach race weekend next month.

“Thanks to our support crew at JDX Racing for preparing a competitive car for Alex and our team,” continued Dais. “We are fortunate to be partnered with many seasoned professionals that align with our talent development and competition goals, which include Jeremy Dale and JDX Racing, Byers/Porsche Columbus, Renier Construction, PDCA Marketing, Sunday Group Management and ReVamp Marketing.”

“Our team’s WHY is “Develop Yourself. Impact Others.” We are committed to the development of every member on our team on our team, from our junior members to our co-founders, through top five strengths-based personality goal coaching, holistic health coaching and therapy, and a variety of fitness coaching. We are looking forward to tackling the many challenges to come as our team grows, especially in Alex’s quest competing for the Porsche Deluxe Carrera Cup North America championship!”

The Deluxe Porsche Carrera Cup North America joins the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the NTT INDYCAR SERIES at the legendary Long Beach Grand Prix, with two races on the weekend. Race one takes the green flag Saturday, April 15 at 5:15 p.m. PDT, with race two Sunday at 4:20 p.m. The race will be broadcast live in the U.S., on IMSA.tv, the NBC Peacock streaming app and PorscheCarreraCup.us.

Spencer Boyd To Race Special Paint Scheme Honoring Medal of Honor Recipients

Mooresville, NC (March 21, 2023) – The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Circuit of the Americas will be held on National Medal of Honor Day, March 25, 2023. Boyd’s long-time partner, Sportman’s Choice® & Record Rack (brand owned by Cargill, Inc.), designed a special paint scheme to honor all Medal of Honor Recipients and Vietnam War Veterans while inviting a special family to the race. Gary Michael Rose | Vietnam War | U.S. Army | Medal of Honor Recipient will be the team’s guest of honor along with his grandson, Christian Bowen, who is also a Gold Star son.

“Record Rack is always raising the bar when it comes to honoring our country’s heroes,” beamed driver Spencer Boyd. “When they came to me with this idea it filled my heart just to be a part of it. I’m looking forward to meeting Mike at the track, shaking his hand and saying thank you. I get to race because of men and women like him who have sacrificed so that we have our freedom.”

The recently designated National Vietnam War Veterans Day is just a few days later on March 29.

Gary Michael Rose “Mike” was presented with the Congressional Medal of Honor on October 23, 2017 by President Donald Trump at the White House for his actions that went above and beyond the call of duty while serving as Special Forces Medic. For years we have highlighted our Bucks for the Brave event and this time around we wanted to pay tribute a very distinguished group of individuals. We are honored to be able to bring Mike out to the race to thank him for his service and sacrifice. It will be my honor to say Welcome Home to this man that will represent all Vietnam War Veterans that didn’t receive this respect upon their return.”

The annual Bucks for the Brave charitable event allows Veterans (no longer serving) and retired First Responders (Law Enforcement, Firefighters, EMTs) the chance to win the hunting experience of a lifetime. Truex won his heat race, then went on to lead the final 25 laps of the feature en route to the victory.

Martin Truex Jr., Driver of the No. 19 Bass Pro Shops Toyota Camry TRD

What are your thoughts headed to Austin this weekend based on what you had there last year and what you’ve learned about this car, particularly on road courses?

“COTA is a place that’s pretty fun for us. But last year we just never got the car where we needed it. I was definitely worried after practice – I was not feeling too good. Your hands are so tied to these things with these short practices, so having some time to make bigger changes after practice will be helpful. I’m looking forward to the extra track time on Friday and get a chance to work on it overnight and see what we have for Saturday and Sunday. We’ve learned so much over the last year about this car and what it likes and what it doesn’t, so hoping we can come with a lot more knowledge than we had this time last year and get the car where we need it to have a shot to win and run up front all day long. Looking forward this this weekend with our Bass Pro Shops Toyota team.”

What type of track causes the most chaos in the Cup Series these days?

“The obvious answer to most is the superspeedways and how things happen and how it can take out a lot of cars quickly. However, road course restarts have become the next craziest part of what we do. Looking back at last year, we crashed on one of the restarts with guys going five and six wide and guys make up eight to 10 spots in one corner. I think that’s the biggest change in our sport the last few years.”

They are putting in the choose rule on restarts at the road course starting this year, with COTA being the first race under the new rule. What are your thoughts on adding it to the road courses?

“I don’t think it’s a huge deal anywhere we go, other than tracks that are one lane dominant like a Michigan or a place like that, unless you are in the front two or three rows and that’s where it makes the most difference and that’s probably what will happen on road courses as well and what I would expect this weekend at COTA.”

Mitsubishi XRT Concept to Debut at Bangkok International Motor Show 2023

Mitsubishi XRT Concept

TOKYO, Mar 21, 2023 – (JCN Newswire) – Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (hereafter, Mitsubishi Motors) will display the Mitsubishi XRT Concept — a concept car of the all-new Triton1 pickup truck planned for launch in fiscal year 20232 — at the 44th Bangkok International Motor Show 20233 to be held from March 21 to April 2.

The Triton is Mitsubishi Motors’ top-selling model manufactured at the Laemchabang Factory in Thailand and the company’s global strategic vehicle exported to about 150 countries around the world. With its first full redesign in approximately nine years, the all-new Triton will be the sixth generation of the brand’s midsize pickup truck. After the launch in Thailand in fiscal 2023, it will be released sequentially in the ASEAN region, Oceania and other global markets.

A concept car of the all-new Triton, the Mitsubishi XRT Concept is characterized by a fierce expression on the front and a robust hood that continues to the side with bold, horizontally-themed styling. Further, the concept car is fitted with front and rear over fenders as well as mud-terrain tires, giving it the powerful drive to compete in grueling rallies and the dynamism to dash across the terrain. The body features a camouflage design inspired by lava rocks packed with condensed energy, and the sides have been adorned with a graphic of the 10-parallel line Ralliart brand icon that expresses Mitsubishi Motors’ passion for driving.

At the Asia Cross Country Rally 20234, Team Mitsubishi Ralliart, which receives technical support from Mitsubishi Motors, plans to compete with a prototype cross-country model of the all-new Triton (Group T1 specifications) in its quest for a second straight victory. Hiroshi Masuoka, a two-time Dakar Rally champion driver in 2002 and 2003, will stay on as team director, and Mitsubishi Motors engineers will perform pre-testing and accompany the team to provide support at the rally. Mitsubishi Motors uses expertise gained from rallies as feedback in the development of its production vehicles, as it seeks to create vehicles with Mitsubishi Motors-ness, which deliver safe, comfortable driving enjoyment in any weather or road conditions.

“Fiscal 2023 is an important year for Mitsubishi Motors to accelerate our business in the ASEAN region, with the launch of a fully revamped Triton and an all-new compact SUV,” said Takao Kato, president and chief executive officer, Mitsubishi Motors. “The all-new Triton is going through final touch-ups in preparation for its release, as we have performed rigorous endurance tests around the world while also incorporating the know-how gained from rally activities. With the new vehicle launches as the centerpiece, we will continue our drive toward further growth. Please look forward to the future of Mitsubishi Motors.”

  1. Triton is sold as L200 in some markets.
  2. Fiscal 2023 is from April 2023 to March 2024.
  3. March 21 is press day, and the show is open to the public from March 22 to April 2.
  4. The Asia Cross Country Rally is the largest-scale cross-country rally event in the ASEAN region and has been held a total of 27 times thus far. This year, the competition is planning to cover a grueling course of over 2,000 total kilometers in mid-August, located primarily in Thailand and extending to neighboring Laos.

“It’s going to be a cool event, it’s so crazy to see this place come back to life,” said Smith, driver of the No. 38 Front Row Motorsports Ford. “It’s the perfect place for a throwback race. The infield is beautiful and it’s surrounded by a track with so much history. We are trying to figure out our truck and trying to see where we can be better and what adjustments we can make to it.”

Smith says the unique North Wilkesboro layout, with a downhill frontstretch and uphill backstretch presents a unique challenge.

“I hope we can move around some come race time,” Smith continued. “If you miss the bottom in one and two you are going to pay for it in a big way. We put a lot of focus on handling today. It will be fun trying something new for one weekend.”

He says the buildup for this race throughout the NASCAR industry and sports world has been epic.

“You hear about this track every day in the shop and all of the legends of our sport talk about it and this is a place you always hear about,” Smith said. “The last few years you kept hearing rumors about this place possibly coming back and I think every racer loves short tracks. It was great to see Dale (Earnhardt) Jr. and others help make this place a reality.”

Hocevar said when he walked into the property he was in awe the whole time he was here.

“Rarely do you have a test where you are smiling the whole time you are out there going around the track,” said Hocevar, driver of the No. 42 Niece Motorsports Chevy. “It was a lot of fun to be out there today slipping and sliding around on this historic track. It sounds silly, but this is our ‘Field of Dreams.’ I’m not a baseball fan, but it was super cool to see that. This is just like that, this is our deal. Everyone has high expectations and hopefully we meet it. It felt like I was walking into a track where we weren’t supposed to be. I’m just really glad that NASCAR, Dale Jr. and the CARS Tour kept picking at it. I wanna be the one that goes up that ramp over there (iconic infield Victory Lane on rooftop of Media Center). That is the coolest Victory Lane ever. If I do, I’m not leaving, I will watch the Cup race from there.”

Heim, who had raced Late Models here in the past, said he felt like his team learned quite a bit during the session.

“I feel like we learned a lot and went through a lot of progressions like we normally do for short tracks,” said Heim, driver of the No. 11 TRICON Garage Toyota. “I feel like this track has a lot more grip than what some people said it had. When we come back in the summer when it will be a lot warmer it should be interesting. It’s really cool and a historic moment for NASCAR and racing in general. To see what NASCAR brings this summer is going to be really exciting. This is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Notes of Interest

● Doubleheader: This weekend at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, Almirola will compete in his second road-course doubleheader weekend as he’ll also run Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race in addition to his fulltime NASCAR Cup Series duties focusing on Sunday’s race. His last road-course doubleheader was at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International in 2018, his first year at Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR). He finished fifth in the Xfinity Series race and 22nd in the Cup Series race.

● Almirola’s best road-course outing in the Cup Series came at Sonoma Raceway in 2018, where he finished eighth. He made it back-to-back top-10 finishes at the track when he returned for a ninth-place result in 2019.

● The No. 10 Smithfield Ford driver finished 19th in last year’s race at COTA – up seven positions from 26th in his debut Cup Series start there in 2021.

● Overcoming adversity is a staple of Almirola’s career. While the start to the 2023 season has not been what the No. 10 Smithfield Ford team is capable of, due largely to bad luck and mechanical issues, Almirola has always seemed to find his way back on top. In 2021, the No. 10 team was in the same points position through the first four races as it is this year, but Almirola still made the playoffs for his fourth consecutive season at SHR. He is known to thrive as the underdog.

● In 2014, Almirola’s teammate Kevin Harvick experienced a similar start to Almirola’s start to this season. Harvick finished outside of the top-30 on four occasions over the first seven races of the season and was 26th in the standings. From there, he went on to win five races and claimed the 2014 Cup Series championship.

● Almirola’s 33 laps led this year marks his second-highest amount of laps led through the first five races of a NASCAR Cup Series season. He led 69 laps through the first five races in 2019.

● Last weekend at Atlanta: Almirola led a career-high 17 laps at the 1.54-mile oval. He and the No. 10 Smithfield Ford team elected to stay out on older tires in the final stage and controlled the race from the lead until a cut right-rear tire ultimately ended their day.

● Almirola had a strong start in the first two outings of the season by winning his heat race and starting on the pole during the non-points Busch Light Clash at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Then, in the points-paying season opener at Daytona, the 39-year-old veteran won his Duel qualifying race and led 16 laps at the Daytona 500 – the most laps he’s led at Daytona in 23 starts.

● Driver Points: Almirola arrives at COTA 27th in the driver standings, 114 points out of first.

● Almirola’s career: In 429 career NASCAR Cup Series starts, Almirola has three wins, 28 top-five finishes, 91 top-10s, three poles, and has led 1,007 laps.

● Fans will see the iconic white, black, and gold Smithfield Foods scheme adorn Almirola’s Ford Mustang this weekend. Smithfield has been a sponsor of Almirola’s for the entirety of his fulltime NASCAR Cup Series career – making it one of the longest-lasting partnerships in NASCAR. Smithfield is an American food company with agricultural roots and a global reach. Its 63,000 team members are dedicated to producing “Good food. Responsibly.®” Smithfield is one of the world’s leading vertically integrated protein companies. The company has pioneered sustainability standards for more than two decades, including its industry-leading commitments to become carbon negative in U.S. company-owned operations and reduce GHG emissions 30 percent across its entire U.S. value chain by 2030. Smithfield believes in the power of protein to end food insecurity and has donated hundreds of millions of food servings to local communities.

● Beyond the 10 YouTube Series: In 2023, Almirola is continuing to share his life beyond the No. 10 Ford with season five of his award-winning YouTube series. Fans and media can subscribe on YouTube to see Almirola’s personality on and off the track. Episodes have already featured life as a dad, a husband and an athlete, and the show gives fans a unique perspective on what goes on in the life of a professional NASCAR driver. Fans can also follow Almirola’s social media channels: @Aric_Almirola on Twitter and Instagram, and @AricAlmirola on Facebook.

Aric Almirola, Driver of the No. 10 Smithfield Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing:

You’re doing the Xfinity Series and Cup Series doubleheader this weekend for the first time since 2018. What made you want to run both this weekend?

“I really want to hone in my road-course skills, and running the Xfinity race is the best way to do it. Every year, I put a huge emphasis on improving on the road courses. Road racing is not something I grew up doing. I grew up racing go-karts on dirt ovals, and then I went to stock car racing on asphalt ovals. I never did any road racing at all until I actually got to NASCAR. That was when I got introduced to road racing and I had a steep learning curve to catch up. I have really enjoyed honing my craft at road racing and trying to figure out how to get better. Entering the Xfinity race on Saturday will give me more experience for Sunday, and I want to give this No. 10 Smithfield team every bit of energy I have to perform. I’m also spending a ton of time on the Ford simulators and just doing all I can to give this team the best opportunity to succeed.”

Bad luck continues to strike, as it did again at Atlanta on Sunday. How do you overcome it?

“You don’t dwell on it and just keep pushing. I’ve seen plenty of teams win races and championships from worse positions than we’re in now. It’s still early. The difference in this year and, say, 2021 or other years that seem to start this way, is that all of our cars have been fast enough to run top-10. The things we can control, we have controlled well, so we have a lot of confidence in that, honestly. We just have to shake the misfortunes and patiently wait for it to turn the corner. I feel even better this weekend about running the Xfinity race because it will give us even more laps and more confidence heading into Sunday.”

How much does road-course racing put what happens back in the driver’s hands?

“It puts a lot back into the driver’s hands, but you still have to have a good-handling car to compete up front, and strategy is going to play a huge role into the weekend now that the stage breaks have been eliminated. While a lot is in the driver’s hands, you still have to have everything go right in order to come out on top.”
