Joe Graf Jr. became the latest addition to Joe Gibbs Racing’s driver lineup for the 2023 NASCAR Xfinity Series season.

The 24-year-old Graf from Mahwah, New Jersey, will be piloting JGR’s No. 19 “all-star” Toyota Supra entry for five Xfinity events this upcoming season, beginning at Auto Club Speedway on February 25. He will then pilot the No. 19 entry at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on March 4, Richmond Raceway on April 1, New Hampshire Motor Speedway on July 15 and at Kansas Speedway on September 9. CoverSeal® and G-Coin® will be supporting Graf’s efforts at JGR.

The news comes after Graf Jr. will also be driving for RSS Racing for 28 Xfinity events this season, which will commence at Daytona International Speedway in February and make him a full-time competitor in the series. It also comes after the New Jersey native spent the previous season competing in all but five of 33-race Xfinity schedule between SS-Green Light Racing, RSS Racing and BJ McLeod Motorsports.

“Running five races with JGR is a fantastic opportunity for myself and for my marketing partners,” Graf Jr. said. “I think I can learn a lot from JGR and showcase my skills I’ve been growing in the series in the past three years. 2023 is shaping up to be a great year and I’m pumped to get started with the No. 19 group.”

Graf Jr. made his inaugural presence in the Xfinity Series at Richmond Raceway in June 2019, where he piloted the No. 21 Chevrolet Camaro for Richard Childress Racing as a development driver and finished 19th after starting 21st. Since then, he has recorded a total of two top-10 results and 23 top-20 results in 93 career starts. His highest-finishing result to date is an eighth-place run at Talladega Superspeedway in April 2022.

Prior to the Xfinity Series, Graf Jr. competed in two ARCA Menards Series season in 2018 and 2019. He claimed his first career victory at Berlin Raceway in August 2018.

“Joe [Graf Jr.] is committed to success, which is something we are looking for in all of our drivers,” Steve DeSouza, Executive Vice President of NXS and Development, added. “We are anticipating a solid season from the No. 19 team and Joe’s addition to the driver lineup will help that team be competitive for the owner’s championship this season.”

With Graf Jr.’s addition to JGR, he becomes the second competitor scheduled to pilot the No. 19 entry that will be led by veteran crew chief Jason Ratcliff. Ryan Truex is scheduled to pilot the car in a total of six events, though his schedule has not been determined. The remainder of the No. 19 team’s drivers and schedules have yet to be determined.

With his schedule set, Graf Jr.’s 2023 Xfinity Series season will commence at Daytona International Speedway on February 18 at 5 p.m. ET on FS1. His part-time tenure at Joe Gibbs Racing will then begin at Auto Club Speedway on February 25 at 5 p.m. ET on FS1.

Jay Leno Explores the History of Trans-Am Racing with Fox Sports NASCAR Announcer Mike Joy on Latest Episode of “Jay Leno’s Garage”

Mike Joy & Trans-Am Racer Ken Epsman Walk Jay Through Three Classic Race Cars

Jay Leno recently featured FOX NASCAR Announcer Mike Joy alongside three classic Trans-Am race cars on Jay Leno’s Garage. A classic car enthusiast himself, Joy walked Leno through the history of Trans-Am racing and the unique vehicle specifications allowing each car to compete in Trans-Am races from 1966 to 1972. The first of two race cars on the episode is from Mike Joy’s personal collection, a very special 1970 Chevy Camaro Trans-Am. The second featured car is a Chevy Javelin that raced the same era.

Following the walkthrough of each vehicle, ‘the voice of NASCAR’ Mike Joy explains that NASCAR has been his passion for forty-five years and that Trans-Am racing has been his ongoing hobby. With the beginning of the NASCAR season set to start with the Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum on Sunday, February 5th airing on FOX at 5:00 p.m. (Pacific Time), 2023 will be Joy’s 45th season in the booth.

Mike Joy explains, “My heart is right here in these cars but my profession has been calling NASCAR for these many years. This year will be my 45th Daytona 500 for either radio or TV, and we all kick it off over here at the L.A. Coliseum. We’re going to run NASCAR cars inside the Coliseum in the Busch Clash for the second year. We’ll do that the first weekend of February and then the Daytona 500 on FOX in mid-February.”

During the walk around of the vehicles, Joy discusses with Leno the special specification that classified Trans-Am race cars. He explains that in 1966, the Sports Car Club of America created the pro-series for sedans which were mostly stock vehicles with some restrictions. V8 powered sedans have a 305 cubic inch limit and a two liter limit for 4 cylinder cars, which allowed local racers to race against factory teams by upgrading their license to pro as long as they had an A or B category SCCA car.

Following the in-garage walk-around, Joy joined Leno for a test drive in Ken Epsman’s Trans-Am Mustang. One of Jay’s impressions from the experience behind the wheel: “These were the final iteration of ‘race on Sunday, buy on Monday’ (cars) because you could go to a race on Sunday and see a team’s car, and you could actually buy that car. You really can’t get close to buying a race car anymore.”

Following the 2023 Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum, the Daytona 500 will air Sunday, February 19th, on FOX at 11:30 a.m. (Pacific Time).

“We’ve always had strong support from our hometown fans,” he said. “We had a great weekend of activities in 2022 and we’ve got another great weekend planned in 2023. The business-to-business relationship between Menards, the country’s third-largest home improvement retailer, and Summit Hill Foods, a leading food company with brands such as Better Than Bouillon, The Original Louisiana Hot Sauce, and Southeastern Mills Gravy and Baking Mixes, along with Shore Lunch, brings opportunities to showcase the entire line of the company’s brands to the Toledo area’s Menards customer base and racing community.

“The 2022 Shore Lunch 200 was one of the most exciting races of the season,” said Steve Goodyear, President and CEO for Summit Hill Foods. “The fans saw a great race that came down to the very last lap. We hope to see all of them back for another great race this October. Summit Hill Foods is proud to be continuing our sponsorship under our Shore Lunch brand for this race.”

Derek Kraus to Pilot Young’s Motorsports Entry at Daytona

MOORESVILLE, N.C.: Young’s Motorsports confirmed today that NASCAR CRAFTSMAN® Truck Series veteran Derek Kraus will join the team for next month’s season-opener at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.

Kraus will pilot the team’s No. 20 Chevrolet Silverado RST with support from Jacksonville, Fla.-based Hardscape Construction.

His relationship with the team is currently a one-race agreement with a vision to increase his 2023 schedule with the team.

Joining Hardscape Construction are Kraus’s seasoned partners Shockwave Seats and Kafka Granite.

The 21-year-old Kraus will serve as the organization’s second announced driver for the Feb. 17 NextEra Energy Resources 250 joining previously announced driver Spencer Boyd.

“I am very excited about joining Young’s Motorsports for Daytona,” said Kraus. “Over the years, Young’s Motorsports have shown on the superspeedways that they build very fast Chevrolet Silverados and I am excited to be able to drive one of them next month at Daytona.

“Young’s Motorsports has two victories at Talladega Superspeedway in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series, but I sure would love the opportunity to deliver not only my first Truck Series win but the teams at a historical venue like Daytona.”

Kraus, a native of Stratford, Wisc. has 73 NASCAR CRAFTSMAN® Truck Series starts to his resume, including four top-five and 24 top-10 finishes, including a career-best second-place finish at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway in 2020.

He is also a veteran of the ARCA Menards Series West where he has captured 10 wins, 29 top-five and 35 top-10 finishes, including the 2019 series driver’s championship.

Before transitioning to Young’s Motorsports, Kraus spent the last three Truck Series seasons driving the No. 19 Chevrolet Silverado RST for McAnally-Hilgemann Racing.

“I am so excited to welcome Derek to the Young’s Motorsports family,” offered Young’s Motorsports team principal Tyler Young. “I have watched Derek blossom over the past three Truck Series seasons and now to him racing for us rather than racing against him is a true blessing.

“With Derek’s ability and clever craft behind the wheel, I know we’re in good hands.”

“There is a lot of passion, focus and motivation that can be felt not only in the race shop but all around the Young’s Motorsports campus. We’ve proven to be winners in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series and we are determined to get back to Victory Lane again and it would be incredibly special to pull that off in the season-opener at Daytona.

“I look forward to seeing what our team can accomplish not only next month at Daytona but throughout the 2023 season.”

“I’m really pumped to kick the season off in LA at the Clash. We had a lot of fun there last year, and Kaulig Racing had a good amount of success. It’s a cool event to have a non-points race at to start the year. Overall, I’m excited to get the season going and pick the momentum up from where we finished off last season. Hopefully, we’ll start the year off strong and continue that through the whole season.” – AJ Allmendinger on Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum

“I’m really looking forward to getting back to LA after the speed and potential we showed last year at the Clash. It took a while to get a feel for the car, but being the first time working with Trent (Owens) as my crew chief, I thought we had a great weekend together. We qualified well and won our heat race, and now, we know even more about the NextGen car. Hopefully we have similar speed as last year along with the new knowledge we have about the car. Aside from the racing, it is a great event to be to be a part of before we kick off the season.” – Justin Haley on Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum

Spire Motorsport Kicks off 2023 with FOX’s “Animal Control” Aboard Corey LaJoie’s No. 7 Chevrolet

CONCORD, N.C. (February 1, 2023) – “Animal Control,” FOX’s all-new comedy, will be featured as the primary sponsor aboard Corey LaJoie’s No. 7 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in Sunday’s Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) pre-season race at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Premiering on FOX on Thursday, February 16, at 9 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) and Pacific Standard Time (PST), “Animal Control,” is a new workplace series that follows a group of local Animal Control workers whose lives are complicated by the fact that animals are simple, but humans are not.

The single-camera comedy stars Emmy Award nominee Joel McHale as, Frank, an opinionated, eccentric Animal Control officer who may not have gone to college, but is still the most well-read person in the room. A former cop, Frank tried to expose corruption in his department, but his efforts got him fired, which may explain why he’s so cynical and curmudgeonly. He has an almost superhuman ability to understand animals. Humans…not so much.

“We are proud to partner with Spire Motorsports and sponsor Corey LaJoie’s car during the Busch Light Clash at The Coliseum on Sunday,” said Darren Schillace, President, Marketing, of FOX Entertainment. “This is one of NASCAR’s most thrilling and innovative events, and with FOX Sports set to once again deliver an immersive telecast for fans, we have a premium opportunity to organically reach millions of viewers to promote our new, high-profile comedy, ‘Animal Control.’”

Every February since 1979, the annual pre-season NCS showcase had been hosted by Daytona International Speedway. In September 2021, NASCAR announced it would move the race from the 2.5-mile Daytona Beach superspeedway to a purpose-built, quarter-mile oval, constructed inside the iconic home of the University of Southern California Trojans football team.

The L.A. Coliseum will also become the first stadium to host the Summer Olympics three times when it serves as the marquis destination for the 2028 games. The coliseum previously hosted the Summer Olympics in 1932 and 1984.

LaJoie struggled with the handle on his No. 7 Chevy in last season’s inaugural Clash at the Coliseum and didn’t transfer from his heat race into the main event. But, with the new season on the horizon, optimism abounds as Spire Motorsports heads west to shake the dust off after three months in the shop.

“I’m ready to kick off this season with FOX at the LA Coliseum,” said LaJoie. “We’re going into this with a fresh mindset after learning a lot last year. Like Frank with animals, sometimes I feel like I can understand race cars better than I can people and that’s why I’m excited to have FOX’s new show ‘Animal Control’ on my Chevrolet Camaro this weekend.”

Qualifying for NASCAR’s annual pre-season exhibition race will be televised live on FS1 Saturday, February 4 beginning at 8:30 p.m. EST. Heat races will also be televised live on FOX the following day beginning at 11 a.m. EST.

FOX’s live television coverage of the Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum will take the green flag Sunday, February 5 beginning at 8 p.m. EST. NASCAR’s second visit to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum – home of the 2028 Summer Olympic Games – will be broadcast live on the Motor Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio (Ch. 90).

Spire Motorsports earned its inaugural victory in its first full season of competition when Justin Haley took the checkered flag in the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway on July 7, 2019. The Clash at The Coliseum Competition Notes: Todd Gilliland and the No. 38 genera8tor Skills Mustang Team

Todd Gilliland and No. 38 Ford Team The Clash at The Coliseum Competition Notes

TEAM AND RACE NOTES:

Making their on-track debut, genera8tor Skills (www.gener8tor.com/skills) is ready to carry Todd Gilliland to the sunny skies and bright lights of Los Angeles, California.

gener8tor Skills Accelerator will be working with Gilliland and Front Row Motorsports (FRM) throughout the season to introduce fans to their service- a free virtual skill-training program where participants receive one-on-one support to achieve their career goals. gener8tor Skills Accelerator was founded in the summer of 2020 to help those who have lost jobs or are struggling to find employment because of the COVID crisis. The program builds confidence with coaching and support to achieve your desired career goals.

Gilliland will be behind the No. 38 generator Skills Ford Mustang during The Clash at The Coliseum at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum- a purpose-built track inside the famous stadium. Gilliland will be beginning his sophomore season in the NASCAR Cup Series.

The two-day exhibition event will begin Saturday, February 4 at 6:00 p.m. ET with a practice session televised live on FS1. Qualifying will also be Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. ET live on FS1.

Sunday will feature qualifying heats (25 laps), two last-chance qualifying races (50 laps), a pre-race concert by Cypress Hill, and finally a 150-lap feature race that will start 27 of the 36-entered teams. The race will feature a mid-race break highlighted with a performance by Wiz Khalifa.

All of Sunday’s coverage will be televised live on FOX.

COMPETITION NOTES:

Like the No. 34 team, Gilliland will also be heading west with new leadership. Ryan Bergenty will be calling the shots for Gilliland after moving over as the car chief from the No. 34 team last season.

Bergenty has been aggressive in the off-season in implementing a “one-team” philosophy between the engineers, car assembly, and the strategy with fellow crew chief, Travis Peterson. The hard work of December and January is ready to pay off.

CREW CHIEF RYAN BERGENTY:

“There is no doubt that we’ve worked on our approach to help Todd and our No. 38 team. We’ve seen a lot of success with the 34 team, our truck team, and we’re all working together to give Todd what he needs to be successful. It’s been fun to work on, a bit stressful, but it’s still a challenge that all of us have taken to heart because we all want to see Todd do well.

“The Clash will be a test of running through our procedures and working on our team chemistry at the track. We feel good about our plan, and it will be about executing it and seeing where we need to improve before Daytona.”

DRIVER TODD GILLILAND:

“I can’t wait to get back into the car. For me, that’s the biggest thing on my mind. I want to get back in the car and get behind the driver seat. It’s a short time off between Phoenix and The Clash, and I enjoy the time off, but I’m still ready to get back to racing.

“The Clash is so much fun because it’s different. Unfortunately I didn’t make the feature last season, but that’s all behind us. We have a new season and some new crew members. Ryan has been working hard and we’re getting to know each other. I got married a few weeks ago and I wasn’t in the shop, but when I came back we’ve been putting in a lot of time getting ready for the season.”

Interstate Batteries Announces Expanded Presence With Longtime Partner Joe Gibbs Racing

‘Team Interstate’ Debuts in 2023 With Primary Sponsorships in Select Races Across JGR’s Entire NASCAR Cup Series Lineup

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (Feb. 1, 2023) – Interstate Batteries, one of the most tenured team sponsors in NASCAR history, begins its 32nd season as the founding sponsor of Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) with an expanded presence that will feature the brand’s iconic green livery across all four of JGR’s NASCAR Cup Series entries.

The introduction of Team Interstate more than doubles the Dallas-based company’s visibility with JGR, as Interstate Batteries will have 13 primary sponsorships in the NASCAR Cup Series in 2023, up from the six primaries it has typically had each year since 2008.

Christopher Bell, driver of the No. 20 Toyota Camry for JGR, kicks off the Team Interstate effort in the Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum Feb. 5 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. It marks the first time in Bell’s seven-year history with JGR, which dates back to his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut in 2017, that Bell will carry the green-and-white colors of Interstate Batteries, joining such marquee names as Dale Jarrett, Bobby Labonte and Kyle Busch.

Then, for the first time since 2007, Interstate Batteries returns as a co-primary sponsor in the Daytona 500 on Feb. 19 when it adorns the sides of Ty Gibbs’ No. 54 Toyota Camry in the Great American Race. The Daytona 500 will always hold a special place in the respective histories of Interstate Batteries and JGR, as they won their first race together 30 years ago in the 1993 Daytona 500 with Jarrett.

Bell and Ty Gibbs will run the majority of Interstate Batteries’ races, but veteran racers Denny Hamlin and Martin Truex Jr., will each carry a primary Interstate Batteries sponsorship. Hamlin, a winner of 48 NASCAR Cup Series races, will drive the No. 11 Interstate Batteries Toyota Camry March 26 at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. Truex, the 2017 NASCAR Cup Series champion, will pilot the No. 19 Interstate Batteries Toyota Camry July 23 at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway.

“One of the great strengths of our partnership with Joe Gibbs Racing over the last 31 years is the way the sponsorship with them has evolved and changed as our needs as a company and brand have evolved. The expansion of Team Interstate on all four JGR cars during 2023 is the next step in the evolution of our sponsorship,” said Norm Miller, Chairman, Interstate Batteries.

“Working together, we always find new ways to use the JGR and NASCAR assets to set up new accounts and sell more batteries. We believe in our partnership and the sport of NASCAR, so when we saw the opportunity to double the amount of races as a primary sponsor – and be a part of such crown-jewel races as the Daytona 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 again – we knew it made a lot of sense. Since we’ve been with Joe Gibbs and JGR from the beginning, we really feel like all four teams are part of our family, so it’s very exciting for the stars to align and be a primary sponsor with all the JGR teams for the first time ever.”

After racing at the L.A. Coliseum, Bell returns to Interstate Batteries colors for the NASCAR All-Star Race May 21 at North Wilkesboro (N.C.) Speedway. The four-time Cup Series race winner keeps his Interstate Batteries livery for a second straight week when he competes in the Coca-Cola 600 May 28 at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway. Bell’s final two Interstate Batteries races are Sept. 24 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth and Oct. 29 at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.

Ty Gibbs continues his slate of Interstate Batteries races with the Food City Dirt Race April 9 at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway, June 25 at Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway, July 2 in the inaugural Chicago Street Race, Sept. 24 at Texas and Oct. 8 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval.

“Our motto at Interstate Batteries is ‘Outrageously Dependable,’ and this expanded partnership with Joe Gibbs Racing drives home that point. We’re incredibly proud of our association with JGR. It’s a program that for more than three decades has resonated with our dealers, distributors and customers,” said Lain Hancock, Chief Operating Officer, Interstate Batteries.

“It’s a winning combination galvanized by the personalities we’ve been associated with at JGR, and it begins with Joe Gibbs. His vision and his ability to put the right people in the right places have made his team and our program a massive success. Expanding our presence with JGR allows us to reap the benefits of the organization’s entire effort, and we’re blessed to have such a talented group of racers represent Interstate Batteries.”

Interstate Batteries helped launch JGR in 1992. In the 31 years that have followed, JGR has scored 200 Cup Series victories – a number that includes four Daytona 500s – and five Cup Series championships. All of JGR’s firsts – win (Jarrett, 1992 Daytona 500, pole (Bobby Labonte, April 21, 1995 at Martinsville) and championship (Labonte, 2000 Cup Series title) have come with Interstate Batteries as the primary sponsor. When all of JGR’s successes are added up across each of the NASCAR series in which it competes, its race victories total more than doubles to 413 (200 in the Cup Series, 193 in the Xfinity Series and 20 in the ARCA Menards Series) with 12 total championships (five in Cup, six in Xfinity and one in ARCA).

“We’re extremely proud of our partnership with our founding sponsor, Interstate Batteries,” said Joe Gibbs, owner of Joe Gibbs Racing. “They have been such an important part of our team for over three decades now, and it’s exciting to have them on board all four of our cars this season. The best part of our partnership is the relationships we’ve built with everyone there over the years. It all started, of course, with Norm and Tommy Miller, and now includes Lain (Hancock) and his entire team. It’s going to be a great season.”

Gibbs, along with three of the drivers who have raced for JGR since its inception in 1992, have been inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Jarrett was ushered into the Hall in 2014 while Gibbs, Labonte and Tony Stewart were enshrined together as part of the Class of 2020.
