Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) Back at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca for Second Year as the Sanctioning Body of the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion and Monterey Pre-Reunion

MONTEREY, California (August 17, 2022) – Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) has returned to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca (WRLS) for its second year as the official sanctioning body of the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion and Monterey Pre-Reunion. A successful and well-run Pre-Reunion last weekend has set the grand stage for this weekend’s Rolex Reunion that gets underway with an expanded schedule starting Wednesday and running non-stop straight through Sunday at WRLS.

After debuting at the Monterey Reunions in 2021 to begin a multi-year partnership, HSR continues this year providing its expertise and vast collective experience in race event operations, full technical scrutineering, competitor and participant registration and vetting entries for the blockbuster Monterey events that are generally regarded as the premier historic and vintage motorsports events in North America.

In keeping with the growth of the more-than week long Monterey Reunion schedules, HSR has undertaken additional responsibilities this year, including running the inaugural Corkscrew Hillclimb this Sunday. For the first time in WeatherTech Raceway’s 65-year history, competitors will run counter-course from near the start/finish line before racing uphill to the iconic Corkscrew for the finish.

“The expertise, professionalism and welcoming spirit shown by the HSR team is aligned with how we want to treat our entrants,” said John Narigi, President and General Manager of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. “HSR is a first-class organization that cares deeply about car authenticity and customer relationships to keep elevating the Rolex Reunion experience.”

Established in the mid-1970s, HSR is led by HSR President David Hinton, who was a majority owner for the last 10 years and guided HSR’s sale to IMSA early in 2022. Hinton remains at the helm as president and continues to steer the organization through one of its biggest periods of growth in the more than 40-year history of HSR.

“HSR has hit the ground running already this past weekend with the Monterey Pre-Reunion,” Hinton said. “It’s a great feeling to be welcomed back by not only the participants but also our good friends at WRLS and the many volunteers who make this event one of the best in the world.”

This year’s Rolex Reunion celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and showcases an honor roll of legendary Le Mans race cars to kick off the official centenary celebrations leading up to 2023’s milestone race at Circuit de la Sarthe.

“It’s a massive honor for HSR to be involved in the first of many events that will be celebrating 100 years of the Le Mans 24 hours,” Hinton said. “What the WRLS team has put together for this weekend is something truly special, with close to 20 Le Mans overall winners on display, numerous class winners and so many significant and memorable Le Mans entries.”

In addition to the cars competing on track, there will also be a selection of significant cars exhibited in a large Le Mans Heritage Display Presented by Motul.

The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is the largest event held during the famed Monterey Classic Car Week. More than 500 race cars are invited to compete in this internationally recognized motorsports celebration each year and are accepted based on each car’s authenticity, race provenance and period-correct compliance.

  • Hinton had the pleasure of being a part of the Rolex Reunion advisory board and car selection committee this year and also helped arrange for several cars with strong HSR ties to be part of the Le Mans Heritage Display. HSR member Malcolm Ross has brought his immaculate No. 1 Rothmans Porsche 962 that won Le Mans overall in 1986 to the Rolex Reunion. Chassis No. 003, the 962 was co-driven to the win by the all-star lineup of Al Holbert, Derek Bell and Hans Stuck. Another longtime HSR competitor answering the call is Scott Hughes who displays his BMW CSL that was co-driven to a 1973 Le Mans class victory by Toine Hezemans and Dieter Quester. “It’s wonderful to see all the hard work put in by so many people come to life in the paddock and out on the track,” Hinton said. “It’s been a true team effort this year.”

SOUTH BOSTON, VA……For the first time in his many years of racing at South Boston Speedway Scott Phillips is on top of the track’s Southside Disposal Pure Stock Division point standings.

With only two races left in the points season including the 25-lap Southside Disposal Pure Stock Division race that will be part of the Saturday, August 20 Italian Delight Family Restaurant presents South Boston Speedway’s 65th Anniversary Celebration event the Halifax, Virginia resident faces the challenge of protecting his 10-point lead over Johnny Layne and his 17-point edge over Jimmy Wade.

“The last two races will be challenging,” Phillips pointed out. “I can’t lay back too much and protect myself too much and have somebody catch me or I get caught up in a mess that I shouldn’t be in.

“I expect it’s going to be a battle,” added Phillips. “I’ve got to stay consistent, stay up front, and finish in the top couple of cars or either right behind or right in front of Johnny (Layne) to not lose the 10-point lead I have in these last two races.”

Phillips has been the model of consistency this season. In his 10 starts Phillips has finished second six times and has nine top-five finishes. He has not finished outside of the top 10 in any of this season’s races.

That consistency is what Phillips will be looking to maintain in this weekend’s event and over the course of the season’s final two races.

“I’m just going to try to stay consistent like I have done all season,” Phillips explained. “I will try to qualify as far up front as I can, be careful on the track, and don’t overdo it and take myself out by hitting the wall or getting into a wreck.”

The 2022 season is the most consistent season Phillips has enjoyed in many years. That has come even with a late-season change in cars.

“Being this consistent is real satisfying,” Phillips remarked. “It feels real good. In the past it has been inconsistent, up-and-down. It has been really good to get up there, hang around and run with the fast boys.”

Switching to a new car did not dent Phillips’ consistency. He has competed in his new car in the past two events at South Boston Speedway and has continued to be among the frontrunners.

“The car I started with this year ran really well, but it had been badly wrecked the other year,” Phillips noted. “I built a new car to see if it would be a little more consistent. It’s got the same engine the old car had, and it’s staying right there at the front like the first car.”

The only thing Phillips has not done this season is win a race.

“Winning a race would be huge,” Phillips said. “It’s disappointing not having won a race this season. I feel like I’ve had the car that could have won a couple of races this year, and it just didn’t unfold the way I wanted it to.”

He hopes that will change in the Saturday, August 20 Italian Delight Family Restaurant presents South Boston Speedway’s 65th Anniversary Celebration event.

“The next race is Italian Delight Family Restaurant Night race, and that’s the race that I won last year,” Phillips noted. “I’m hoping I can get a repeat.”

A full program of NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series racing action, special guest appearances and a colorful fireworks display following the final race of the night will all be part of the celebration Saturday night, August 20 as South Boston Speedway celebrates its 65th anniversary with the Italian Delight Family Restaurant presents South Boston Speedway’s 65th Anniversary Celebration event.

Twin 65-lap races for the NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series Late Model Stock Car Division competitors headline the night’s seven-race card. A 50-lap race for the Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division, a 25-lap race for the Southside Disposal Pure Stock Division and a 20-lap race for the Virginia State Police HEAT Hornets Division are also included in the NASCAR racing action.

A pair of vintage races will give fans a glimpse back in time. Member competitors of the Southern Ground Pounders Vintage Racing Club will compete in a 25-lap race in their vintage Modified and Late Model Sportsman cars. In addition, members of the East Coast Flathead Ford Racing Association will compete in a 25-lap race that will feature vintage Modified and Sportsman Division cars.

A colorful fireworks display to celebrate the speedway’s 65th anniversary will follow the night’s final race.

Saturday’s race-day schedule has practice starting at 3:30 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5:30 p.m., qualifying begins at 6 p.m. and the first race of the night will get the green flag at 7 p.m.

Advance adult general admission tickets for the Italian Delight Family Restaurant presents South Boston Speedway’s 65th Anniversary Celebration event are priced at $10 each and may be purchased online on South Boston Speedway’s website, www.southbostonspeedway.com, through Friday night, August 19. Tickets at the gate on race night will be $15 each. Seniors ages 65 and older, military, healthcare workers, and students (with ID) can purchase tickets for $10 each at the gate on race night.

Speedway officials note that tickets and pit passes from the rained-out August 6 event will be honored at Saturday night’s event. Individuals who purchased tickets for the rained-out August 6 event must bring their original August 6 ticket with them to Saturday night’s event.

By no means does Van Alst consider himself a road racing ace, but on the strength of a respectable 12th-place finish in his road course debut last month at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, the Anderson, Ind. native returns to the mindset of turning both left and right in hopes of delivering his eighth top-10 finish of the 2022 season.

“Hopefully the second road course is better than the first,” Van Alst said with a chuckle.

“Right now, it doesn’t look like there will be any rain which is a big relief from what we dealt with at Mid-Ohio.

“I don’t feel we did badly at Mid-Ohio; I am just inexperienced. So hopefully we take what we learned and get better at Watkins Glen.”

A long-time racer with aspirations of someday making a start in one of NASCAR’s top-three national divisions, Van Alst is familiar with the layout of Watkins Glen from studying previous races, but as the ARCA veteran knows – nothing is more adequate than actual seat time.

“For me, it’s just going to be about consistency at Watkins Glen this weekend,” added Van Alst. “I don’t expect to see us in contention for the win, but I think with a game plan, I think we can maintain a good enough pace that keeps our top-10 rebooted streak alive on Friday.”

With seven top-10s in the last nine races in a tough summer stretch, Van Alst is proud of the work that his all-volunteer team has committed to his No. 35 CB Fabricating Ford Fusion not only this summer but all year long.

“The momentum of our team is really big right now,” added Van Alst. This stretch has been tough on us with no full-time guys. I’m not complaining by any means, but I am proud of what we are doing with the way we operate and work hard to get to the race track every week.

“This weekend might be our biggest challenge yet, but I am confident if we can have a good race on Friday night, it’s only going to help us prepare for the rest of the weekend and Milwaukee next weekend.”

Following Watkins Glen, Van Alst will join the rest of the ARCA teams and travel west to the Illinois (Ill.) State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Ill where he’ll make his debut on a dirt track in the highly-contested Atlas 100.

“It’s a part of the dream right?” sounded Van Alst. “I’ll admit I’m more nervous about the travel to and from each track. You just worry about something happening out of your control. But, once you arrive at the track and unload, it is business as always but there are a lot of miles to cover in a short amount of time.

“I don’t know what to expect on Sunday as far as racing on the dirt. I’m just trying to have a positive open-mind approach and hope it will help for DuQuoin in a few short weeks.”

Entering Michigan, Van Alst sits a career-high fourth in the ARCA Menards Series championship standings, 84 markers in the arrears to championship leader Nick Sanchez.

“Step by step, we will do everything we can to catch the top three,” sounded Van Alst. “No question they have been the three strongest cars all year, It’s not going to come without some luck and strong finishes, but we are not going to go down without a fight. This is a tough series and we are still proud of where we are at.

Taylor Gray, No. 17 Ford Performance Mustang

  • Taylor Gray enters a doubleheader weekend with the ARCA Menards Series this weekend. He will make his second career appearance at Watkins Glen International on Friday followed by his third appearance at the Springfield Mile on Sunday.
  • At Watkins Glen one year ago, the 17-year-old driver finished seventh in a stout field of cars. He also competed in the Truck Series race last season, but mechanical gremlins plagued the team resulting in a 35th-place finish.
  • On the dirt at the Illinois State Fairgrounds, Gray has finishes of fourth and third in the last two seasons. For this event, the team has prepared a Ford Fusion entry out of its fleet of ARCA cars.
  • Friday’s event will serve as the seventh round of the Sioux Chief Showdown. The No. 17 sits second in the standings, 19 points behind leader Sammy Smith.

DXDT Racing Ready for Racecars, Brats, and Cheese at Road America Doubleheader

ELKHART LAKE, Wis., (August 16, 2022) – DXDT Racing may be in for an exciting weekend of racing at Road America for the next rounds of the Fanatec GT World Challenge Powered by AWS. Dubbed “America’s National Park of Speed,” Road America’s long straight and sweeping corners provide no shortage of excitement and promise to deliver nail-biting action for the weekend ahead, August 19-21.

Twenty cars are set to compete in the weekend’s festivities for the GT World Challenge America series, with the Pro/Am class making up more than half of the field. DXDT Racing will kick off the weekend with race fans in downtown Elkhart Lake on Thursday, August 18 at Siebkens Resort. From 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, the official welcome party will feature a parade of all of the weekend’s race cars, a driver autograph session, outdoor food and drinks, and live music for fans to enjoy while admiring all the cars on display. The event will be free and open to the public.

After recently completing a two-day private test on the 4.048-mile circuit, the DXDT Racing No. 63 usalco Mercedes AMG GT3 and No. 08 Qelo Mercedes AMG GT3 are ready to compete in back-to-back races on Saturday and Sunday, in Rounds 9 and 10 of the 14-round championship. Drivers David Askew, Dirk Muller, Scott Smithson, and Bryan Sellers may have to deal with mixed weather conditions that are often the norm for the Wisconsin-based road course. Though the weekend schedule shows sunny skies and clear conditions for Friday’s practice sessions, Saturday and Sunday’s race days have a 50% chance of rain for both days.

Fitted with two drivers, each Mercedes AMG GT3 will compete in a pair of 90-minute races. Askew and Smithson, the amateur-ranked drivers, will take the green flag for race one on Saturday at 2:15 PM Central, then hand the driving duties over to their professionally ranked drivers to finish the race. Muller and Sellers will start race two on Sunday afternoon at 1:15 PM CT, and as their co-drivers did the day before, pit halfway through to let their teammates finish the event. I’m very pleased with where we are as a team right now. With every test, we’re doing huge improvements, day by day. We’re doing a good job of making the team stronger every day we work together. I’m very pleased we had a couple of good test days here at Road America last week. When we concluded, we were looking very strong and will build from there. A podium is on our minds for this weekend and having both cars on the podium would be stellar. As always, I’m really happy to be here and am looking forward to it.

Racer Gives Others a Turn Around in Life as the Fanatec GT World Challenge America Comes to Road America August 19-21

ELKHART LAKE, Wis., August 16, 2022 – First-time visitors to a racetrack can walk away with indelible memories.

In some cases, those moments can turn around a life.

Students from Milwaukee-based Great Lakes Adult & Teen Center will get an up-close look at Road America during the Fanatec GT World Challenge, Aug. 19-21.

There are 200 Teen Challenge Centers in the country. The nonprofit organizations, which in some states have expanded to include adults (men and women), offer residential programs for people who are struggling with drug and alcohol addiction.

Biblical principles and Christ-centered ministry are significant components of the 15-month program. People at the Great Lakes organization live within a five-hour radius of Milwaukee.

Terry Borcheller, chaplain and president at Motorsports Ministries, shared the story of a young man who was part of a previous teen challenge program in the early 2000s.

The teenager was instantly taken by the sights and sounds at the track, according to Borcheller.

“He was completely entranced with everything — the cars, the drivers, the ministry side, and the various personal testimonies shared,” Borcheller said.

“When he graduated from the program, he decided to go to NASCAR mechanics school because of his involvement with the racetrack.”

As a result of the experience and his education, his life was turned around for the better, and he became a crew member for Borcheller’s race team that won the 2014 Grand-Am Championship. “He was the best tire changer in the paddock,” Borcheller said.

The man is now a mechanic for a race team in the IMSA Series.

Borcheller organized outings for a Florida-based Teen Challenge Center to Daytona International Speedway for 11 straight years, with the help of Dale Sankey, from Stevens Point, Wisconsin. Now, Borcheller is thrilled to get the chance to help at Road America, along with Rev. Craig Harper, who’s been executive director at Great Lakes Teen & Adult Center for 30 years.

Don Miske from Allentown, Wisconsin, is also helping coordinate the activities at Road America. About 30 Great Lakes students will participate in several coordinated events at the permanent road course in Elkhart Lake during the weekend.

“Most of these people have never been to a racetrack,” Borcheller said. “That’s why I think it’s so great for Road America.

“They’re giving us tickets to allow these folks to come and experience something they’d otherwise never have the chance to experience. ‘Look, if you get one of these guys engaged to where they’re realizing this is a passion that they never even knew existed, you’ve got somebody who can come and be a corner worker or work at the gate.’ They can become part of the community. They get sucked into it, get addicted differently, and love it.”

Besides Daytona and Road Atlanta, Borcheller took groups to Laguna Seca Raceway & Sonoma Raceway, among others, in years past.

Borcheller shares some of his personal experiences with faith and racing and introduces students to a slew of people from the racing community. Past speakers have included Patrick Dempsey and Hurley Haywood.

Great Lakes students will get to watch Borcheller compete. And maybe several will take away some interesting situations — listening to testimonies from several racing influencers and going to the car’s technical inspection.

“They’ll do some spectating in some of the best spots, do some tours with different teams, get introductions from some drivers and team owners and managers,” Borcheller said.

“They get to be part of something extraordinary that many of them didn’t know existed.”

The students will also watch Borcheller race.

Borcheller will get behind the wheel at Road America, competing in a GT-4 Toyota Supra with car owner Nick Shanny running with Carras Callus Race Team.

Borcheller is no stranger to Road America. He first competed on the track in an endurance kart in 1980. He’s won many races at Road America in various cars and series.

“I love the area around Road America,” Borcheller said. “The atmosphere is special, but the track complements it as well. Road America is always at the top of my list as one of my favorite tracks.”

The Fanatec GT World Challenge at Road America will showcase two 90-min races featuring full-service pit stops, driver changes, and non-stop excitement on Saturday and Sunday.

In addition, the weekend schedule will feature the Pirelli GT4 America, GT America, & TC America powered by Skip Barber for a jam-packed weekend of elite sportscar racing.
