Horizon Hobby Makes Cup Season Debut with McDowell at Famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway

McDowell Comes to Into Indy with Confidence

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (JULY 26, 2022) – For Michael McDowell and the No. 34 Horizon Hobby team, confidence has been a key to good runs on road courses this season. Starting off with some frustration at COTA during practice and qualifying, the team quickly found success on race day and their confidence translated to a top-five at Sonoma and a top-10 at Road America. McDowell is now ready to take their success into Indianapolis with winning on his mind.

“It’s all about getting a win right now,” said McDowell. “We have been in the playoffs, and we want to be there again. We want to a consistent playoff team and the road courses are giving us a great opportunity. Sonoma was close, we were just off a bit at Road America, but we feel good about this weekend. Indy was good to us last year until the very end. We will not make any errors on Sunday.”

Supporting the team this weekend is the global leader in Radio Control products and accessories, Horizon Hobby. The popular makers of surface, water and air RC’s will host over 150 guests at the track on Sunday to cheer for McDowell as he fights for the win. The race for Horizon Hobby is the first of two at the most famous courses in the world- the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Daytona International Speedway in August.

“It’s awesome to see Horizon Hobby and their support for us,” commented McDowell. “Every week, we are meeting local retailers and it has been fun to hear about their stores and everyone enjoying this hobby. You can be serious about it or just out there to have fun with the family. I have some vehicles and as a family, we are outside bashing and having a great time. It is such a fun partnership.”

Chandler Smith – No. 18 Safelite Tundra TRD Pro Camping World Trucks IRP Preview

Chandler Smith: Driver, No. 18 Safelite® Toyota

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Overview:
Event: TSport 200, Race 17 of 23 (Race 1 of 3 in the Round of 10), 200 Laps – 60/60/80; 137.2 Miles
Location: Lucas Oil Indianapolis (Ind.) Raceway Park (IRP) (0.686-mile oval)
Date/Broadcast: July 29, 2022, at 9 p.m. ET on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR 90

Chandler Chatter:

Chandler Smith and the No. 18 Safelite team head into the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series playoffs on a high note after dominating the regular season finale at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway. Smith led 49 of 60 laps, collected a stage win and the trophy and secured the second position in the regular season standings with his performance last week. With the 10 playoff points he collected for finishing second in the regular season standings, 10 points for his two victories and two points for his stage wins, the 20-year-old driver enters the Round of 10 second on the playoff grid with 2022 points, 20 markers ahead of the cutline for advancing to the Round of 8.

The Truck Series will be visiting Indianapolis Raceway Park for the first time since 2011, but Smith has experienced remarkable success at the 0.686-mile oval in the ARCA Menards Series. He finished third in his first visit in 2018 and then collected the hardware in each of his last two trips. In 2018 he led just seven laps en route to victory but in 2020 he dominated the race by being out front for 162 of 200 laps.

Smith made the playoffs in his rookie campaign last year as the 10th seed. He advanced to the Round of 8 with a must-win victory at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway in the final race in the Round of 10. He found himself in another must-win situation in the final race in the Round of 8 at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway and saw his playoff run end when he finished fourth. As a consolation prize, he won the pole and swept all three stages in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series finale at Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway.

The Toyota Racing Development product finished the 2022 regular season with two wins, seven top-five and 11 top-10 finishes. He has already eclipsed the number of top-five and to-10 finishes he recorded in his rookie campaign. Through the first 16 events of the season Smith ranks first among Truck Series regulars in laps completed (2012) and quality passes (545), second in average finish (8.8) and average running position (9.165) and third in driver rating (101.0).

The Georgia driver earned NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Rookie of the Year honors in 2021 after producing two victories, one pole, 213 laps led, six top-five and nine top-10 finishes in his first full-time season. He earned his first career Truck Series victory at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway in September of 2021. Across 54 career Truck Series starts, the Toyota Racing Development driver had recorded four wins, one pole, 451 laps led, 21 top-five and 29 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 13.1.

Veteran crew chief Danny Stockman will once again call the shots for Smith and the No. 18 team in 2022. Stockman’s drivers have produced eight victories at KBM since he joined the organization in 2020, including four with Smith behind the wheel. The veteran crew chief captured a Truck Series championship with Austin Dillon in 2011 and also won an Xfinity Series championship with Dillon in 2013. Stockman’s drivers have collected one pole (Dillon, 2011), and two top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 7.5 across two Truck Series starts at IRP. His best result was a sixth-place finish with Dillon in 2010.

Safelite, the nation’s largest provider of vehicle glass repair, replacement and recalibration services, returns to KBM for a fifth season and will be the primary sponsor on Smith’s Tundra TRD Pro Tundra for 16 races this year, including Friday’s race at IRP. Charge Me will serve as an associate sponsor on the bedtop of Smith’s No. 18 Tundra TRD Pro this weekend. Charge Me was founded on the principle that the electric vehicle (EV) revolution will require robust infrastructure support at all levels.

Chandler Smith, Driver Q&A:
Chandler Smith | Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Preview
Do you feel like you have momentum on your side heading into the playoffs after dominating Pocono?
“Momentum is definitely on our side — we had a really fast Charge Me Toyota Tundra at Pocono. Looking forward to going to IRP – I have a lot of experience there, I’ve been there three times and won twice in the ARCA Menards Series. I’ve always wanted to go there in a Super Late Model and now it’ll be cool to be going there in the Truck Series. Really looking forward to getting my Safelite Toyota Tundra to victory lane there as well.”

You’ve had success at IRP in the ARCA Menards Series. Does that track fit your driving style?
“I suppose, because honestly Turn 3 at Pocono and Turn 1 at Phoenix – which I feel like I’m respectable at – are very similar to IRP as far as the banking and all, it’s pretty flat. So, I would’ve never have thought of myself to be a good flat track racer, but for some reason if I look back on my history, I show to be pretty decent at those. I guess flat tracks are kind of in my wheelhouse a little bit, I don’t know why that is, but I have a good history with them.”

Are you more prepared to make a championship run this year now that you have playoff experience?
“Yes. I think just because of the maturity factor that goes into it. Last year to this year I’ve matured a lot as far as just understanding how important it is to get playoff points and what that means and what that is going to do for you if you advance to the next round. Different scenarios and understanding that and realizing how important that is. Last year’s experience definitely helped a lot for the bigger picture, which is this year, so look forward to hopefully making it to Phoenix.”

Chandler Smith Career Highlights:

  • Across 54 career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts has recorded four wins, 451 laps led, 21 top-five and 29 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 13.1.
  • Earned NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Rookie of the Year honors in 2021 and finished eighth in the championship standings after producing two victories, one pole, 213 laps led, six top-five and nine top-10 finishes in his first full-time season. He earned his first career Truck Series victory at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway in September and in the series finale at Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway earned his first career pole and swept all three stages en route to his second victory.
  • Has posted an average finish of 29.5 across two NASCAR Xfinity Series starts in 2022, with a best result of 22nd coming at Dover (Del.) Motor Speedway.
  • Has collected nine wins, 10 poles, 1783 laps led, 22 top-five and 29 top-10 finishes en route to an average finish of 5.4 across 34 career ARCA Menards Series starts.

Chandler Smith’s No. 18 Safelite Tundra:
KBM-25: The No. 18 Safelite team will unload KBM-25 for Friday’s race at Indianapolis. Smith piloted this Tundra TRD Pro to a sixth-place finish earlier this year at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway. This Toyota has three career wins across 2o career starts, with wins at Martinsville with Todd Gilliland (2019) and Noah Gragson (2017) and with Christopher Bell at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway in 2016.

KBM-25 Performance Profile
KBM Notes of Interest:

  • KBM drivers have one top-five and one top-10 finish across two Truck Series starts at IRP resulting in an average finish of 12.0. Owner-driver Kyle Busch’s runner-up finish in 2010 was the organization’s best result.
  • KBM holds the Camping World Truck Series records for most career wins (96) and most wins in a single season (14 in 2014). With his victory at Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway, Corey Heim became the 18th different driver to win a Truck Series event for KBM. In addition to collecting a series-record seven Owner’s Championships, the organization has produced two championship-winning drivers: Erik Jones (2015) and Christopher Bell (2017).
  • The No. 18, the number which was on the first Tundra that went to victory lane for KBM in 2010, has 25 career victories.

Ruedebusch Returns for Road Course at Indianapolis

Gilliland Speaks About New Car on Road Courses

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (July 26, 2022) – Ruedebusch Development and Construction returns to the No. 38 Ford Mustang this weekend as NASCAR Cup Series rookie Todd Gilliland competes in his first race on the Indianapolis (Ind.) Motor Speedway road course.

“I have been really looking forward to racing at Indy this year,” said Gilliland. “I am looking forward to the technical challenges of it. Watching it last year there were a lot of difficult corners that caught some drivers out. Hopefully, we can learn a lot from that and have a strong run.”

Gilliland will sport the No. 38 blue and white Ruedebusch Development and Construction scheme this weekend at yet another road course. The company, who made their season debut with Gilliland at Road America, will also be on the car in Las Vegas in the fall.

“The Ruedebusch Development and Construction colors look great,” continued Gilliland. “The Ruedebusch family has been so amazing this year. We want a good run for them at Indy.”

“I think we have learned from COTA and Road America. This new car races good on road courses and that was the hope of NASCAR. It has worked and that is why we can race a street course in Chicago now, too. The new car has opened doors for us and that is cool. I want to race different tracks and have different experiences. If we can take the new car to ovals, dirt tracks, road, and street courses, that is a diverse schedule and keeps the drivers and fans interested in what we are doing.”

Gilliland and the Ruedebusch Development and Construction Ford Mustang will race the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. ET on NBC.

Regular Season Champion Zane Smith Ready for Playoff Opener

Focused on Protecting Points Lead with Boot Barn at IRP

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (July 26, 2022) – NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Regular Season Champion, Zane Smith, will start his playoff run with a 15-point lead heading into the opening round at the Indianapolis Raceway Park (IRP).

This weekend’s event at IRP marks the first race since 2011 at the short track, a track that Smith is excited to tackle.

“I have had this track circled on my calendar all year,” Smith stated. “Chris (Lawson) and I would really like to win it here under the lights and start the playoffs strong.”

Smith is focused ahead to the future races in the playoffs, noting that consistency is what it takes to make it all the way to Phoenix for the championship at the end of the season.

“It is great to be able to celebrate a championship with Front Row Motorsports,” said Smith. “We can’t solely rely on those points to get us into the Championship Four. We must keep performing like we have all year; we have one of the highest average finishes in the series right now. Consistency will get us to that big trophy at the end of this season.”

Boot Barn returns for their final primary race in the 2022 Truck Series campaign. With a string of strong finishes with Boot Barn on the truck, Smith hopes to keep the streak going.

“Boot Barn has been a really fun partner to work with this year,” Smith said. “So far we’ve got them a third and a second. I want to keep that trend going and deliver them their first win in a NASCAR National Series race. I think we can do that this weekend.”

Smith and the No. 38 Boot Barn Ford F-150 will tackle the short track of IRP at 9:00 p.m. ET on FS1.

GEARWRENCH Racing: Kevin Harvick Indianapolis Advance

KEVIN HARVICK
Indianapolis Advance
No. 4 GEARWRENCH® Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing

Event Overview

● Event: Verizon 200 at the Brickyard (Round 22 of 36)
● Time/Date: 2:30 p.m. EDT on Sunday, July 31
● Location: Indianapolis Motor Speedway
● Layout: 2.439-mile, 14-turn road course
● Laps/Miles: 82 laps / 200 miles
● Stage Lengths: Stage 1: 15 laps / Stage 2: 20 laps / Final Stage: 47 laps
● TV/Radio: NBC / IMS Radio Network / SiriusXM NASCAR Radio

Notes of Interest

● The Verizon 200 at the Brickyard serves as the fourth of six road-course races on the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series schedule. The series’ first road-course race came March 27 at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas, where Kevin Harvick finished 11th. The second road-course race was June 12 at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway and Harvick finished fourth. In the series’ most recent road-course race July 3 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, Harvick finished 10th. The two remaining road-course races after Indianapolis are Aug. 21 at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International and Oct. 9 at the Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway Roval.

● Harvick, driver of the No. 4 GEARWRENCH Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing, has made a total of 52 NASCAR Cup Series starts on road courses. He has 21 starts at Sonoma, 20 at Watkins Glen, four at the Charlotte Roval, two apiece at COTA, Road America, and the road course at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, and one on the road course at Indianapolis – last year’s inaugural Verizon 200 at the Brickyard where Harvick finished 14th. He has scored two road-course wins – Watkins Glen in 2006 and Sonoma in 2017 – along with 11 top-fives and 26 top-10s with 195 laps led.

● When Harvick scored his first road-course victory at Watkins Glen in 2006, he had to beat his current team owner to do it. Tony Stewart – the “Stewart” in Stewart-Haas Racing – had won the past two NASCAR Cup Series races at the 2.45-mile, seven-turn road course and was poised to capture a third straight win as he was leading Harvick with four laps to go in the 90-lap race. But Harvick, who had already led once for 24 laps, passed Stewart on lap 87 as the two drag-raced down the frontstretch and into turn one. Harvick held onto the lead despite Stewart in his rearview mirror, earning a margin of victory of .892 of a second.

● Harvick’s second career road-course win also had a connection to Stewart. When Harvick won at Sonoma in 2017, he gave Stewart-Haas Racing its second straight victory at the 1.99-mile, 10-turn road course. The winner in 2016? None other than Stewart. It ended up being his 49th and final NASCAR Cup Series victory as Stewart retired from NASCAR racing at the conclusion of the season.

● Harvick’s last road-course win was his first in a Ford. When Harvick won at Sonoma in 2017, he became the 83rd different driver to win a NASCAR Cup Series race behind the wheel of a Ford. Harvick has now won 23 Cup Series races with Ford, which makes him one of only 13 drivers to win 20 or more races with the manufacturer. He is currently tied with Rusty Wallace and Carl Edwards for 11th on the all-time Ford win list.

● Harvick has four road-course wins outside of the NASCAR Cup Series. Two came in the NASCAR Xfinity Series – Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in 2007 and Watkins Glen in 2007 – and two were in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West – Sonoma in 1998 and Sonoma in 2017. Harvick’s K&N Pro Series win at Sonoma in 1998 was three years before his Cup Series debut on Feb. 26, 2001 at North Carolina Speedway in Rockingham.

● Featured on the decklid of Harvick’s No. 4 GEARWRENCH Ford Mustang during the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard is the 120XP line of innovative torque wrenches from GEARWRENCH. The number 120 is significant as 120XP torque wrenches provide 120 different positions thanks to two, double-stacked, 60-tooth gears that, along with its Flex Head three-degree swing arc, allows users to turn fasteners in tight confines. GEARWRENCH offers two styles of 120XP torque wrenches – Micrometer and Electronic. Both deliver industry-leading accuracy, each with a one-year limited warranty and calibration accuracy warrantied for 90 days. The 120XP Electronic Torque Wrench, however, brings an even higher level of versatility. It has three function modes that feature peak torque, angle and peak angle, and it digitally tracks torque and angle measurements. Reading the 120XP Electronic Torque Wrench is easy. In fact, it literally stirs the senses, with a vibrating handle, a buzzer and an LCD screen alert to let the user know when target torque is reached. The 120XP Electronic Torque Wrench is also global, able to provide measurement units in foot-pound (ft-lb), inch-pound (in-lb), nanometer (Nm), kilogram-meter (Kg-m), and kilogram-force per square centimeter (Kg-cm). And for frequently used settings, up to 10 can be stored. The torque wrench has evolved, and GEARWRENCH is leading the evolution.

Kevin Harvick, Driver of the No. 4 GEARWRENCH Ford Mustang

When it comes to Indianapolis, you’ve been clear that you prefer its 2.5-mile oval over its 2.439-mile, 14-turn road course. What is it about the oval that resonates with you?

“It’s definitely an oval thing for me. Driving through that tunnel and understanding the history and everything that comes with racing on the oval at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is something that I always look forward to. When you look at the oval and you look at the history of the racetrack and everything that comes with that – some guys may not have grown up like that, so some people will have a much different opinion – but for me the oval just holds a huge place in racing and it holds a huge place in the things that I look forward to every year. I remember the first time I pulled in there for a test in 2001 and you roll into the racetrack and you think, ‘Man, I just accomplished everything in my childhood dreams, rolling into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.’ Getting to go out on that racetrack and hearing the echoes of the cars through the grandstand is something that I’ll never forget.”

Have you been asked for any input on the curbing that will be placed on the Indianapolis road course?

“Last year, it was kind of trial-and-error. I think it was pretty obvious that we didn’t need curbs that were 90 degrees to the racing direction on the racetrack that did nothing but tear up cars. In the end, we even tore down the basic ones. I think they’ve got all that rectified this season and, hopefully, we won’t have any of that happen. I think permanent, concrete, smoother curbs – all of that is better.”

Last year’s road-course race at Indianapolis turned into a bumper-car race, particularly at the end when Chase Briscoe and Denny Hamlin traded bumps that sent them both off the track and into an animated post-race discussion on pit road. What’s OK and what’s not OK in road-course racing, because we saw similar bumping and banging earlier this year at COTA?

“Road-course racing in general has become rougher over the last decade just because of the stage racing and the double-file restarts and everything that comes with that. I wish we could implement our choose rule in some of these situations at places like that because I think it would make it even more entertaining. But road-course racing has just progressively gotten rougher, and now with the new car and not having to worry about caving in a fender or something, you can pretty much just lay it in there and see what happens.”

Do we need actual stage breaks with full-course cautions on road courses?

“In my opinion, there should be no stage breaks. I think the stages should be rolling laps and when the stage ends, the stage ends, and you score points on that lap. But I think that the stages, and all the extra cautions, they just take away from the race.”

The NextGen car seems to have acclimated well to all the tracks, but does it perform best on road courses since the car carries a lot of sports-car DNA?

“It’s definitely leaning more toward handling well at the road courses just because that’s kind of the nature of how it was designed. I think for me, our first road course was a lot more comfortable in the car than what we were last year. For the braking and things that come with this particular car, it’s been good for us on the road courses, so far.”

With the sequential shifter in these cars, how is shifting on a road course? Do you have to be more methodical in what you do to ensure you’re in the right gear?

“That’s still a little bit of a transition just because the cars are not hard to shift, but they’re hard to constantly shift correctly, and the timing of it with the way the gears are cut, you can mistime the shift really easily. It’s definitely something that, as you go throughout the day, you have to pay attention to.”

GNSS Post Race Report Dillon Motor Speedway

Mooresville, N.C.- The Grand National Super Series presented by Engineered Components Co. put on quite the show Saturday night at Dillon Motor Speedway. It was a hot one both on and off the track. Frank Kimmel was the fast qualifier, ending A.J. Henriksen’s pole streak. The entire field was inverted putting Frank, A.J. and Joe Wilder in the back.

The race started and Marc Jones led his first laps of the season and was holding the field off until a caution came out for Kevin Kromer who hit oil and spun in the middle of turns three and four ending his race. The green flew once again, and it would be Kimmel leading the field as they came back around. The man on the move was Joe Wilder with Henriksen in tow.

As the race forged on Kimmel and Wilder pulled ahead of the field and it seemed as if Wilder was going to get his chance to make a move on Kimmel. With two laps to go Wilder got loose coming off turn four giving Kimmel enough room to hold him off for the win.

Your top five for the first race was Kimmel, Wilder, Henriksen, Mike Kurkowski, and Cody Dennison with his first top five of the season.

For the second race the entire field would be inverted once again putting Wilder and Kimmel in the back. Kevin Kromer who had damaged his car in the first race would drive Mike Kurkowski’s 54 machine. Once the green dropped Lauren Butler made her presence known leading 10 laps. Kimmel, Henriksen, and Wilder methodically worked their way through traffic making their way to the front of the field. This time it would be Henriksen challenging Kimmel for the win. The two worked their way through lapped traffic, A late race caution once again bunched up the field giving Henriksen his chance to strike. However, it would not be. Kimmel got an impeccable restart.

At the end it would be Kimmel, Henriksen, Wilder, Lauren Butler, and Marc Jones would round out your top five. Winning Saturday night was special to Frank Kimmel as it was Charles Hutto Memorial night. Frank and Hutto grew close when Hutto drove a car in The Frank Kimmel Street Stock Series, forging a friendship.

The next GNSS event will be at Carteret County Speedway in Swansboro, North Carolina on August 13th. We would like to thank our awesome sponsors who make all this possible; Engineered Components Co, Howe Racing Enterprises, Chalew Performance, and Circle Track Warehouse.
