For the past two seasons, we did doubleheaders at Pocono. Now that we’re back to just a single race at the track, do you prefer the doubleheader or do you like the standalone event?

“Any time we can get two races in one weekend, I’m in. I think it added a unique element to the weekend just because of the invert and everything that happened from the first day to the second day. I always thought that was a cool weekend and I hated to see it go.”

Did the first part of the doubleheader on Saturday help you for the second part of the doubleheader on Sunday?

“Usually. Sometimes you can screw it up, too. Luckily for us, we seem to run pretty good in the doubleheader situations.”

Pocono seems to have a road-course element to it – some flat, fast corners, some bumps, plenty of shifting – does that make it a track that amplifies the NextGen car’s road-course attributes?

“With the NextGen car’s characteristics, you’re going to be able to push and shove and bump draft and all of the things that you can do. And then you’re going to have options on gears, so add that in with sometimes being difficult to pass, I think it’s going to be interesting to see the restarts. I think the restarts are going to get more intense than they’ve been before.”

Drivers have been shifting at seemingly all the tracks this year, due in large part to the sequential shifter in the NextGen car. But shifting on an oval really seemed to first come into vogue at Pocono. Can you talk about the element of shifting at Pocono – when you started doing it and why you started doing it?

“When I started, that was just what you did at Pocono. You downshifted and it was just part of the process of Pocono. But that kind of went away as the teams kind of decided it was too expensive. So we went to spec transmissions and couldn’t shift, and then it went back to, ‘OK, you can shift,’ and now we’re going to shift in every corner. So, it’s definitely just kind of a piece of the puzzle that’s come with this new car, and at Pocono, I think we’re going to shift in every corner.”

With the NextGen car’s sequential shifter, how different is it from the standard H-pattern shifter?

“It’s basically just up and down. When you push up on the shifter, it’s a downshift. When you pull down on the shifter, it’s an upshift. It’s really easy to use. Once you put it into gear, there’s no need to use the clutch or anything on the upshifts or the downshifts. It’s made it a little easier to shift, but there’s a lot more shifting going on, so that adds a new element to it that you really didn’t have before.”

How do you know what gear you’re in, and have you been using the sequential shifter long enough to where you’ve ridded yourself of the habit of shifting in an H-pattern?

“There’s three gear stacks that they put in the transaxle and you run those at different places. So, some places, we’ve actually not run fifth gear. Like Martinsville, we shifted between third and fourth. At some places, you run fifth gear and you go between fourth and fifth, so I would imagine that’s what we’re going to do at Pocono. You still have to think about what you’re doing just because the gear that you’re in is on the dash screen. I found myself a few times, at Darlington even, I’d come off turn two, and I had been downshifting a little bit while I was in traffic or on restarts, and there were a couple of times that I went to grab another gear and I was already in fifth gear. You do that a lot at different places because you’re in between some of those gears, and sometimes you get jammed up and you downshift, and sometimes you do it on a restart. So you have to kind of think, but for the most part, if you’re just making laps you kind of get into a rhythm of knowing which gear you’re in.”

What makes a lap at Pocono so challenging?

“When you look at Pocono, you know that you’re going to have a challenge of getting your car to handle in all three corners. That’s the biggest challenge when it comes to Pocono. You have to make sure you can get all you can coming to turn three because the straightaway after that is really, really long. You can kind of give up the tunnel turn, but you still need to be very good in all three corners. It’s just a different style of racetrack than what we go to on a week-to-week basis.”

You mentioned the tunnel turn – what makes it so difficult?

“The tunnel turn is difficult just because you try to carry so much speed through there. It’s not an extremely hard corner, but it’s an extremely hard corner to carry speed through there without having the front end push or the back slide out. It’s not an extremely hard corner until you try to go through there as fast as you can lap after lap. It’s an easy corner to make a mistake. You can give up a lot of time there, but you can also make a lot of time.”

8. Ryan Blaney: Blaney finished 18th in the Ambetter 301.

“How about that battle between Brad Keselowski and Austin Dillon?” Blaney said. “Those guys were really trying to wreck each other. Currently, that’s what disagreements in the Cup series amount to – trading paint. If it were the Xfinity series, the two drivers would be trading punches.”

9. Christopher Bell: Bell passed Chase Elliott with 42 laps to go and pulled away to win at New Hampshire, taking his first win of the season and clinching a playoff spot.

“This was an incredibly special win,” Bell said. “Not only did I clinch a playoff berth, but I also won a live lobster as a trophy. I heard that Tim Richmond once won a race and got crabs.”

10. William Byron: Byron finished 11th at New Hampshire and is eighth in the points standings, 70 out of first.

“I don’t drive a Toyota,” Byron said, “but I can appreciate Toyota’s commercial starring the Busch brothers, Kurt and Kyle. And it makes sense that Kurt would be the one abducted by aliens because apparently, no one wants Kyle.”

Buescher Finishes 17th in New Hampshire

No. 17 Hangs Top-Five Midway Through Race Before Fading Late

LOUDON, NH. (JULY 17, 2022) – Chris Buescher put his Fastenal Ford Mustang inside the top five for a large portion of stage two in Sunday’s race from New Hampshire Motor Speedway, but faded late to finish 17th in the 301-lap race.

The Texan began the afternoon from the 16th position – his best starting spot at the short-track to date in his Cup career. From the drop of the green, the Fastenal Ford picked up two positions and settled into 14th before an early caution flew on lap four. After a restart on lap 12, the No. 17 Ford would struggle getting through the bumps in turns three and four, resulting in a 22nd place finish in stage one.

The team took a big swing at the car for stage two with a bevy of adjustments. Restarting 23rd in stage two, a couple cautions for incident would see no gain or loss in position for Buescher.

On a pit stop just shy of lap 100, the No. 17 elected to stay out, restarting on the front row. Buescher would remain in the top five for 35 laps before fading to 10th when the caution flew on lap 145. Two more cautions would fly before the end of stage two, where Buescher would finish 22nd.

The No. 17 pit crew changed the right side tires for Buescher under the stage break, putting him eighth for the final restart. Only one caution flew over the final 92 laps, where Buescher ultimately finished 17th.

Keselowski Finishes Seventh in Chaotic Loudon Race

Best Finish of Season for No. 6 Team

LOUDON, N.H. (July 17, 2022) — Brad Keselowski earned his best finish of the season Sunday afternoon at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, driving to a seventh-place finish in the Kohler Generators Ford.

“We had a decent day here in the Kohler Generators Ford Mustang,” Keselowski said after the race. “We climbed pretty far in that last run, so proud of our team for the effort. Certainly an up and down day, but it ended well for us.”

The two-time winner in Loudon had one of his best starting positions of the season, putting the No. 6 Mustang through to the final round of qualifying on Saturday. He was the fifth-fastest in Group A qualifying and went on to notch the ninth-fastest time in the field.

After unexpected rain briefly delayed the start of the 301-lap race, the race went green around 3:30 p.m. ET. An early caution on lap four — one of nine on the day — brought the field to an early halt with Keselowski in 11th.

He went on to finish the opening stage in 14th, before an eventful stage two of five cautions ensued. A two-tire stop early in the stage gave him track position of 13th for a restart at lap 100, but that eventually faded away as a green-flag run of 47 laps followed.

From there, three cautions flew over the course of 17 laps, with the No. 6 in 17th at lap 164. Despite avoiding all of the incidents, Keselowski and the No. 3 machine made contact under yellow, ultimately bringing him to pit road for fresh tires. He would go on to finish the stage 23rd.

Just one yellow flag stood between the stage three start and the checkered, as the final caution was displayed at lap 204 with Keselowski in 18th. He restarted the race 15th with 92 to go, and from there took advantage of cars that were fading in the closing laps to finish seventh. It marks his third top-10 of the 2022 campaign and 15th overall at Loudon.

WIGHT MOTORSPORTS SCORES PODIUM FINISH AT TORONTO INDY

-Ranger snags pole & finishes second

(July 18, 2022) Wight Motorsports Inc (WMI) drivers hit the track around Exhibition Place in Toronto for round number five of the 2022 NASCAR Pinty’s Series season and the return of one of the largest events in Canadian Motorsports, the Toronto Indy. After postponements due to Covid restrictions the big crowds were back and WMI was once again on the podium at the finish.

The day started with challenges when the #9 of Brandon Watson has troubles during the morning practice & qualifying session meaning an engine swap and Watson starting at the back. Ranger however blistered a lap late in the session to grab his second pole position of the year.

During the 35-lap race the battle raged at the front of the field, Ranger would surrender the top spot at lap five but continued to push for the lead. Unable to regain the position the #27 driver would finish as runner up and collect a lot of championship points.

The day wasn’t as rewarding for others, Watson sustained contact during the race while Mark Dilley’s #64 experienced overheating issues and transmission gremlins plagued Glenn Styres #0 car. TJ Rinomato had a drama free day in the #2 and picked up three positions during the race.

MBS MOTORSPORTS SCORES TOP TEN IN TORONTO

(July 18, 2022) The MBS Motorsports with driver Daniel Bois at the wheel of the #31 Chevrolet had another impressive outing during round number five of the 2022 NASCAR Pinty’s Series on Friday at the Toronto Indy. In only their second ever series race Bois ran in the top-five at the second consecutive race and collected a seventh-place finish.

The MBS crew worked meticulously to prepare the #31 for the challenging street circuit in at Exhibition Place in Toronto. During the combined practice and qualifying session Bois posted the tenth quickest time and lined up for the 35-lap race on the outside of row five. Several early caution periods kept the field close together and Bois moved forward.

Running as high as fourth he continued to look for opportunities ahead of him. However, the #31 would feel a bump from behind on more than one occasion. Contact would eventually send him into the tire wall near turn eight. Keeping his wits about him Bois lit up the tires and powered out of the problem.

In the final laps Bois continues to hustle the #31 Chevrolet and fought his way back into a seventh-place finish. The first top ten result for the team.

Notes of Interest

● This was Pruett’s 10th career Top Fuel win and her second at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colorado. Pruett won her first Wally at Bandimere in 2018.

● Pruett’s victory was the fourth for Tony Stewart Racing (TSR) in the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series, but its first in Top Fuel. Hagan has delivered three Funny Car wins so far in TSR’s inaugural season.

● Pruett’s win was a satisfying one for team partners Dodge//SRT and Mopar as its Dodge Power Brokers brand was the primary sponsor for both Pruett and Hagan during the Dodge Power Brokers NHRA Mile-High Nationals.

● Pruett’s win allowed her to gain significant ground in the championship standings, as she jumped from 10th in points to sixth.

● Pruett advanced to the finals for the 19th time in her career and for the first time this season.

● Following Q2 on Friday, both Pruett and Hagan were the provisional No. 1 qualifiers for the first time in 2022.

● Hagan earned his 47th career No. 1 Funny Car qualifier and his fourth of the season with Saturday’s Q3 run (3.908 ET at 323.12 mph). This was the second straight year that Hagan won the pole for the Dodge Power Brokers Mile-High Nationals. Hagan came into the event as the defending Funny Car winner.

“We had a really great racecar this weekend. It was nice being able to qualify No. 1 on the mountain. Going into the first round, we really weren’t expecting to smoke the tires like that. We really tried to pull things back to make things favorable for the racecar. Obviously, the mountain had a different idea about how things were going to go up here. We smoked the tires and I gave it a good peddle job for a while and gave up the ghost up there. Jack Wyatt is an underdog that you cheer for, so it’s nice to see him go some rounds. We hate it because we wanted to get Dodge a win, with this being their race. We were in a great position to do that, but the racing gods didn’t have it in store this weekend. We’ll make some adjustments and move on to Sonoma and Seattle.”

The next event on the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series schedule is the DENSO NHRA Sonoma Nationals July 22-24 at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway. The event will serve as the second race in the NHRA’s Western Swing before culminating with the Flav-R-Pac NHRA Northwest Nationals July 29-31 at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Washington.
