Marks on making his first NASCAR start since 2018 and returning to Mid-Ohio: “I’m glad I can help support Niece Motorsports and thrilled to be in the Worldwide Express colors. Their Silverados have been fast this year so we are going to Mid-Ohio this weekend with the mindset of not only having fun, but believing we will run welI. Crawford Takes Two Points Finishes in Silverstone F3 Debut

17-year-old Texan promises ‘Best is yet to come’

SILVERSTONE, England (7 July 2022) – Jak Crawford battled through his third-consecutive weekend to finish both races in the points in his rookie FIA Formula 3 Championship season. The 17-year-old Red Bull Junior team driver from Texas took 10th in Saturday’s opening sprint race, and set the fastest lap of the race en route to placing sixth in Sunday’s feature race for PREMA Powerteam.

“The best is yet to come,” Crawford said. “Overall I am disappointed with the weekend because we had a lot of speed and didn’t quite get the results. But at the end of the day, we didn’t lose that many points.

One big improvement came in qualifying, where Crawford put in a solid final lap to place fifth. Still, he thought he could have done even better.

“We had good pace this weekend,” Crawford said. “In qualifying I just missed a bit on my lap. I don’t think we had the speed for pole but definitely top-three. Still, top 5-five is still a good result, and I’m happy with that.”

Starting eighth in the Saturday event, with the top 12 qualifiers inverted, Crawford lost and then regained a position on the opening lap and then ran eighth for much of the event. With his tires losing grip, he lost two positions over the final two laps but still managed to collect a championship point.

“I got a good start but got tire damage on the first lap with an incident with another driver,” he explained. “Carrying that tire damage through the race really hurt, especially at the end as it caused too much degradation and I didn’t have any tire left. So I was a bit unlucky there. Even though I only lost two positions at the end of the race I could maybe have gained some, as we were looking quite quick.”

Crawford had a strong start for the 22-lap Sunday feature, jumping out in fourth and making a bid for third on the opening lap before falling back to fifth as a spin ahead of him forced two cars off and brought out a safety car.

“It was a crazy first lap and then I struggled with pace a bit early on, the balance was not great.”

Shortly after the restart, Crawford went side-by-side with another driver, who bumped him off course on lap 8. The Texas recovered from the light contact to rejoin the race in eighth. He was not happy with the incident, but obliged as he was urged to keep calm by the team.

Crawford gained seventh on lap 10, and then managed to take sixth with three laps remaining – although 2.4-seconds back. He fought to close the gap to within one second, helped by running a 1:456.713-seconds last lap – giving him fastest lap of the race for the second time in three races.

“I was battling for fifth when I got hit and dropped back to eighth” he said. “After that it was recovery and I got back up to sixth after a Safety Car restart. Then the speed was quite good, and as the race went on the car got better for me. On the last lap I got fastest lap, which showed we had the pace. It was just a shame that we didn’t get to race at the front the whole race.”

The F3 competitors have a short turnaround before next weekend, when the campaign reaches the midway point with Round 5, the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg on July 7-9.

Monster Energy Racing: Riley Herbst Atlanta NXS Advance

RILEY HERBST
Atlanta NASCAR Xfinity Series Advance
No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing

NASCAR Xfinity Series Overview

• Event: Alsco Uniforms 250 (Round 17 of 33)
• Date: Saturday, July 9
• Location: Atlanta Motor Speedway
• Layout: 1.54-mile oval
• Time/TV/Radio: 5 p.m. EDT on USA/PRN/SiriusXM NASCAR Radio

Riley Herbst Notes of Interest

• Riley Herbst and the No. 98 Monster Energy team are bringing the heat to Atlanta Motor Speedway for Saturday’s Alsco Uniforms 250 NASCAR Xfinity Series race. Fresh off a seventh-place finish last Saturday at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, Herbst has his eye on the trophy this weekend. In the series’ last race on an oval track June 25 at Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway, Herbst earned his second career pole and his second top-three finish of the season.

• The Alsco Uniforms 250 will mark Herbst’s fifth career Xfinity Series start at Atlanta, but just his second on the new layout. The 1.54-mile oval was reconfigured over the winter. The banking was increased from 24 degrees to 28 degrees and the track was narrowed from 55-feet wide to 40-feet wide, and it was all covered in fresh asphalt. The goal of the reconstruction was to recreate the kind of pack-style racing seen at the behemoth, 2.5-mile Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway and the even bigger 2.66-mile Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway. Xfinity Series drivers competed on the new layout for the first time back in March, and it suited Herbst well as he finished fourth – his best result in four Atlanta starts.

• The Alsco Uniforms 250 will mark Herbst’s 93rd career Xfinity Series start. In total, he has 14 top-fives and 45 top-10s dating back to his first career start on June 17, 2018, at Iowa Speedway in Newton, where he finished an impressive sixth as a 19-year-old. In four previous starts at Atlanta, Herbst has scored two top-10s and never finished outside the top-20. Herbst has completed all 662 of the laps available.

• With only 10 races remaining before the Xfinity Series playoffs begin Sept. 24 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Herbst is sitting in solid position to make the 12-driver field. He is currently ninth with 545 points, 136 ahead of Anthony Alfredo, who is the first driver below the cutoff line. So far this season, Herbst has earned five top-fives and 11 top-10s. He’s on track to have a career year, as he has already matched his season-high total of top-fives, first earned last year, and he is only six top-10s away from matching his career high in that category as well, which he accomplished in 2020 (17).

Riley Herbst, Driver of the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang

At the last oval track the NASCAR Xfinity Series visited – June 25 at Nashville Superspeedway – you had your strongest overall weekend so far this season. You earned your second career pole and tied your season-best finish of third. Does that help your confidence heading into Atlanta?

“Nashville was a great weekend for everyone on this No. 98 Monster Energy team. We just had a solid day, which is what we need to make it to the playoffs. Every track is different, so you still have to do everything you can to prepare for the weekend. With that said, I think we’re knocking on the door of our first win and, eventually, it’s going to open. We’re focused on improving in every area and I think it’s showing.”

You seemed to take to the new Atlanta configuration when last raced there in March. Not only did you get back on the lead lap after going two laps down, but you earned a top-five finish. What is it about the reconfiguration that suits your driving style?

“Honestly, I think just the sheer speed of the track now. It drives like a superspeedway, which I’ve always been able to perform well at in my career. When we raced there earlier this year, I honestly didn’t know what to expect. We didn’t have a strong qualifying effort and then had some issues with water temperatures. But, ultimately, I was able to race my way up to fourth. I think we’ve grown as a team since then, so I’m excited to head back.”

This is the first time in your career that you’ve raced with the exact same team for a second year. Has that helped your performance this year?

“It helps a lot. I don’t think I’ve had the same crew chief and team from year-to-year since I started in NASCAR, and it’s a struggle when you have to learn an entire new team each year. Richard (Boswell, crew chief), the team, and I were all still figuring each other out last year, but now we have a strong relationship and good communication. I think it shows with our strong performance this season.”

This weekend marks the second trip to the new-look Atlanta and the repaved surface, as RFK enjoyed some decent success there in the spring in the fifth race of the 2022 campaign. Buescher finished seventh while Keselowski ran 12th.

RFK at Atlanta

RFK has 271 total starts at AMS in the three major NASCAR touring series, totaling 13 wins, 59 top-fives, 112 top-10s and 9 poles, while leading 3,154 laps and turning over 104,000 miles. The team has 190 starts in NCS action with six wins and 73 top-10s with four poles.

involved in an early crash. Just three years later the organization claimed its first win there in the fall of ‘91 with the No. 6 Ford. RFK won its first of seven NXS races at the track in the spring of ’97. The team’s top outing at AMS came in the fall of 2005, when the organization placed four cars inside the top seven, with three cars finishing in the top five including race winner Carl Edwards. Amber Balcaen; Rette Jones Racing Determined to Rebound in Road Course ARCA Debut

LEXINGTON, Ohio: After a much-welcomed break, Rette Jones Racing and ARCA Menards Series rookie driver Amber Balcaen head to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course determined for a rebound in Friday afternoon’s Dawn 150k.

After a series of strong runs throughout the month of May, the two-race short track stretch at Berlin (Mich.) Raceway and Elko (Minn.) Speedway brought terror to the Mooresville, N.C.-based team with unfortunate circumstances and frustrating results.

But with any rocky trend in racing, the tide will eventually settle and the scenery will change and that’s exactly the approach Balcaen and her Mark Rette-led team are taking for the first of two road course races this season.

“The break last weekend was a welcomed opportunity to allow us to reset and refocus,” offered Balcaen.

“Obviously Berlin and Elko did not go as we planned, but fortunately, there is plenty of racing left and hopefully we can go to Mid-Ohio and have a productive race that allows us to look ahead to Pocono Raceway in a few weeks.”

If not experiencing the oval tracks in the ARCA Menards Series for the first time wasn’t a big enough challenge, Mid-Ohio is a 13-turn, 2.258-mile road course and a style of racing that Balcaen has yet to tackle, but her focus on conquering the latest challenge is keeping her motivation peaked.

“I’m very optimistic about this weekend at Mid-Ohio,” said Balcaen. “Honestly, I have been preparing for it for the last couple of weeks now and even though I have never done anything like this before, it is just another challenge to conquer.

“I just want to make improvements from start to finish over the weekend and if we can achieve that then hopefully we will have a good result on Friday afternoon. We need to start collecting some points again and the only way we are going to do that is with a solid finish and seeing the checkered flag.”

To help curb any forks in the road this weekend at Mid-Ohio, Balcaen will work with former ARCA Menards Series winner and road course standout Will Rodgers who will serve as her exclusive driving coach for her ninth career ARCA start.

“I’ve heard a lot of good things about Will and I’m looking forward to having him in my corner this weekend,” she said. “With Mid-Ohio being my road course debut, I’ll take any tips or feedback that I can get and with Will being in my corner, I feel like he can help me make significant gains throughout the day.”

Balcaen finished 17th at Elko Speedway, her worst finish in four races and thankfully didn’t lose a lot of points on one of her goals of becoming the highest finishing female in the championship standings.

“We lost even more ground at Elko, but Mid-Ohio begins our mission to charge and fight back,” she said.

“We are not even halfway in our 2022 season and we have 12 races left in the year, a lot can happen. We are regrouped and ready to fight forward.

“I am excited for Amber to work with Will (Rodgers). He is an amazing road course talent and I think he will be a huge asset to our Rette Jones Racing team on Friday.”

For crew chief and co-team owner Mark Rette, he is confident that his rookie driver will continue to adapt and rebound at Mid-Ohio.

“The last two races have been tough to swallow, but they have even been bigger learning experiences for Amber, so it is not a lost cause,” offered Rette. “In our most recent race at Elko, she was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

“Mid-Ohio isn’t going to be easy but collectively we are ready to tackle the 42 laps ahead of us with a positive attitude and hopeful with a little luck, a top-10 finish is possible on Friday.”

ICON Direct will continue to adorn the primary positions on Balcaen’s race car in their ninth of 20 races this season.

Longtime RJR partners Ford Performance, Goodridge Fluid Transfer Systems, Jones Group Demolition and Abatement and JRi Shocks will continue their relationship with the team in 2022 and serve as associate partners on Balcaen’s No. 30 ICON Direct Ford Fusion.

RJR is co-owned by Canadian entrepreneur and former race car driver Terry Jones.

Entering Mid-Ohio, Balcaen sits sixth in the ARCA Menards Series championship standings, 11 points out of fourth and 65 markers in the arrears to championship leader Rajah Caruth.
