PARDUS AMPED FOR NASCAR’S RETURN TO COTA

AUSTIN, Texas — When does five months seem like five years?

When you’re a NASCAR driver who hasn’t been behind the wheel since October.

An eager Preston Pardus returns to action Saturday (March 26) when NASCAR’s Xfinity Series invades the Circuit of the Americas for a second time. Pardus, 25, created some of the most memorable moments of his brief Xfinity career in his final three outings of 2021.

The privateer qualified a strong 10th on the road course at Indianapolis in August, posted a career-best seventh on Charlotte’s ROVAL in early October, then finished on the lead lap three weeks later in his first NASCAR oval start at Martinsville.

“It feels like forever since then,” Pardus laughed. “I hope we have the same amount of speed we had last year. At Charlotte, we showed we could put a race together, so that felt good. If we can build off of what we had last year, it’d be a great step.”

At last year’s NASCAR debut in Austin, Pardus battled his way to a 14th-place outing. It was one of eight solid lead-lap performances in 14 Xfinity starts.

The 21-turn layout will offer a different feel this time around. Ground-penetrating radar and laser mapping equipment identified areas in near of repair, and turns 14 through 16 have been repaved. Concrete pads were installed to reinforce areas in the second and 10th turns.

“It was mainly a lot of braking bumps that were the issue,” Pardus said, “so we’ll probably be able to drive into the corner a little harder now. Tire life should be a little better and not quite so much like a Darlington or some of the other more abrasive tracks.”

The Circuit of the Americas, Pardus said, catches the racers’ attention immediately as they are faced with an 11% climb after they take the green flag and charge toward Turn One. Qualifying for the Xfinity drivers is slated for 4:30 p.m. Central on Friday.

COTA, which opened in 2012, currently hosts the only Formula One race in the United States. This weekend, it will see all three of NASCAR’s national divisions in action. The Camping World Truck Series shares the bill Saturday with the Xfinity cars, and NASCAR’s Cup Series provides Sunday’s main event.

Dan Pardus will serve as his son’s crew chief in Austin. Dan Pardus is a former NASCAR Cup, Xfinity and ARCA racer.

“Preston’s getting very confident in the car and the crew’s ability, so it’s making him that much faster,” Dan Pardus said. “We learned a little bit last year at Austin set-up wise, and he learned some things talking to Alex Labbe,” an Xfinity Series veteran.

On Sunday (March 20), Dan Pardus was recognized by the Florida Short Track Racing Legends Reunion for his “commitment and support to stock car racing” in the Sunshine State. He also received a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for his efforts from Rep. Bill Posey, Florida’s 8th District U.S. Congressman.

The Circuit of the Americas race will also mark the debut of Garage Oil – American Badass Whiskey as a sponsor on the No. 91 Chevrolet. A newcomer to the shelves as well as NASCAR, Garage Oil is based in Austin.

“We see ourselves down the road being a big-time NASCAR player,” said Ron Stone, founder and co-owner of Garage Oil. “I think Preston has a big ol’ career in front of him, and … this could turn out to be a really great long-term relationship with them. I think Preston is a tremendous driver, and I like him and Dan personally.”

Garage Oil – American Badass Whiskey (https://garageoilspirits.com) is available in nearly three dozen Texas locations, and will soon be on the shelves in Arizona, California, Colorado and Florida. Home delivery is available in central Texas.

Petty GMS Race Recap: Atlanta Motor Speedway

Ty Dillon, No. 42 Alsco Uniforms Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

START: 18th
FINISH: 36th
POINTS: 25th

Ty Dillon Post-Race Thoughts: “I don’t know what happened there. We were taking it easy. We had a penalty on pit road, so we had to restart last. I was just kind of chilling. I was trying to slow down with the wreck and the No. 14 (Chase Briscoe), I don’t know what he was looking at or doing. He just ran right through me and ended our day. I knew we had a good enough No. 42 Alsco Uniforms Camaro ZL1 to hopefully get up front with good track position and good pit stops. Just hate that it ended our day early. It was really hard to pass and you needed help (to pass). Even if you were handling better, if somebody could just stay in the middle lane, you could hardly get around them unless you had a massive run and they messed up. Track position matters. Hopefully we would have been up front, but it wasn’t our day.”

Erik Jones, No. 43 FOCUSfactor Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

START: 23rd
FINISH: 14th
POINTS: 19th

Erik Jones Post-Race Thoughts: “I’m proud of our entire FOCUSfactor team. Our Chevrolet Camaro started off on the loose side, but towards the end of the run, it felt pretty neutral. Dave (Elenz, crew chief) had the car handling a lot better than the rest of the guys we were racing around, but the cars were very aero dependent. Once we were involved in that accident, I couldn’t tell where our speed was because there wasn’t anyone behind me. It was definitely tough to pass, but we all were in the same boat. Just happened to be in the wrong lane at the end which shuffled us back outside the top-10. We will take a 14th-place finish and shift our focus to COTA.”

Justin Haley, No. 31 LeafFilter Gutter Protection Camaro ZL1

Start: 22nd

Stage 1 Finish: 20th

Stage 2 Finish: 14th

Finish: 11th

Quote:

“Obviously, Chris (Buescher) and I were going for the same real estate there at the end, so neither of us were really to blame. I did not want to be forced down below the red and white line. I have been bitten by that rule in the past, so I obviously did not want to go below it, and I was not going to check up either. We had a really strong No. 31 LeafFilter Gutter Protection Camaro ZL1 all day, but we were just unlucky at the end.”

Noah Gragson, No. 16 Chevyliners.com Camaro ZL1

Start: 30th

Stage 1 Finish: 37th

Stage 2 Finish: 37th

Finish: 37th

Quote:

“I just got loose there through (turns) one and two. It was still early in the race, so I wasn’t pushing it. I was just trying to bide my time and stay patient. It’s such a long race. It’s unfortunate. I hate it for the ChevyLiners.com team and everyone at Kaulig Racing. They’ve been putting in so many hours this year. My goal was to complete all the laps and finish the race. The No. 16 Camaro ZL1 was fast, it was just a mistake.”

Nalley Cars 250

AJ Allmendinger, No. 16 Action Industries Chevrolet

Start: 7th

Stage 1 Finish: 16th

Stage 2 Finish: 1st

Finish: 3rd

Quote:

“The Action Industries Chevy was really good. We went into this race more focused on the handling of the car, and for the most part, it handled really well. I feel like we just needed a few laps to get the momentum going. Overall, I’m really proud of everyone at Kaulig Racing. To run in the top five at a place like this, with a new surface, is exciting. It was a solid points day, and we were able to win a stage. I can’t thank Landon (Cassill) and Daniel (Hemric) enough – we work so well together, and that’s what makes this team more of a family. I’m thankful to have such great partners with Action Industries, Nutrien Ag Solutions, and everyone else that’s a part of this race team. We’re getting there.”

Landon Cassill, No. 10 Voyager Digital Chevrolet

Start: 10th

Stage 1 Finish: 18th

Stage 2 Finish: 11th

Finish: 5th

Quote:

“We had a really good handling No. 10 Voyager Chevy in every scenario we were in during the race. To actually be racing up front the whole race is really special and a lot of fun. It was a different type of racing, similar to a superspeedway, and the leadership at Kaulig Racing knows how to win at these type of tracks. It takes teamwork and for all the drivers to buy into it. We’re four races into the season and we keep clicking off these top 10’s and top fives. I’m happy with the direction we are headed in.”

Daniel Hemric, No. 11 AG1 Chevrolet

Start: 8th

Stage 1 Finish: 19th

Stage 2 Finish: 2nd

Finish: 35th

Quote:

“It was a frustrating day. I made a few mistakes throughout the day, but everyone at Kaulig Racing rebounded really well. Once we were able to drive back up through the pack, I got hooked into the fence, which ended our day. It’s one of those ‘Woulda, coulda, shoulda’ situations, but we will move on and keep getting better. Our cars have been really fast, so I’m looking forward to COTA next week.”

Keselowski Dodges Carnage to Finish 12th in Atlanta

KOHLER Generators team rebounds from early contact for solid finish

HAMPTON, GA (March 20, 2022) – The NASCAR Cup Series took on the newly-repaved high banks of Atlanta Motor Speedway today for the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500. Brad Keselowski began the day in his No. 6 KOHLER Generators Ford Mustang from the 36th position after the team was forced to drop to the back for unapproved adjustments prior to the green flag.

When the green flag waved, Keselowski quickly picked up a dozen spots, moving himself to 24th before the first caution for a single car incident in turn two. The competition caution would wave on lap 45. Under yellow, the No. 6 team was involved in an incident on pit road when a few cars stacked up in front of them, creating damage on the nose of Brad’s Ford as he was left with nowhere to go. The crew went to work quickly to make repairs with multiple trips to pit road under yellow, keeping Keselowski on the lead lap.

The caution flew again on lap 91, giving Brad’s team more time to make repairs to the front of his Mustang, which helped give the car competitive speed once again. After a pile-up on the front stretch that would close out stage one, The KOHLER Generators team would round it out in 29th. The team would stay out to gain track position for the start of stage two.

Keselowski sliced and diced his way in and out of the Top-10 for the entirety of stage two, which saw a total of four cautions, many for incidents that caused near calamity for the team. The team earned stage points at the end of stage two for a 5th place finish.

The final stage was set up to be a game of fuel mileage, with Brad restarting in the 14th position. When a late race caution came out on lap 253, the No. 6 came in to top off with fuel multiple times. A multi-car wreck on lap 301 would bring the No. 6 back down pit road for a four-tire strategy for grip during the final run to the checkered. Keselowski would bring the No. 6 home in 12th as the field wrecked across the finish line.

The NASCAR Cup Series heads to Circuit Of The Americas next Sunday, March 27th for the sixth race of the season, set for 2 p.m. ET on FOX, PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

Buescher Powers Through Field for Second Straight Top-10

Buescher earns Third Career Top-10 Finish at Atlanta

HAMPTON, GA. (March 20, 2022) – The No. 17 crew earned their second Top-10 finish of the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season Sunday, fighting through 500 grueling miles at a newly-repaved Atlanta Motor Speedway that saw 12 caution flags.

Chris Buescher started the day from the 14th position, where he was calculated to start due to the poor weather on Friday rearranging the weekend schedule. He found himself relegated to the mid-twenties for the first caution, which flew on lap 24. The 17 team brought him down pit road for only two tires; fuel tank not permitted to be topped off until after the competition caution at lap 45. Buescher remained P24 until the competition caution where he gained eight positions on pit road. After a hard fought 44 laps, the caution flag flew once again with Buescher P25. Scott Graves and the ITSavvy team elected to bring their Ford Mustang down pit road for fuel and tires, sending Buescher back three positions to P28 four laps before the conclusion of stage one. The field raced hard for stage points, wrecking before the completion of stage one. Under caution, Chris finished stage one P25.

Since the 17 car pitted under caution right before the stage break, Buescher found himself starting stage two on slightly used tires in P11. The caution flag would fly for the sixth time at lap 145 following a big wreck out of turn four. Chris was not involved, pitted for four tires and fuel, and restarted in the same position as the last caution. Losing and gaining back several positions through two additional cautions, Buescher finished stage two P11, just outside of stage points.

The ITSavvy Ford dove down pit road during the stage break for four tires and fuel. This strategy call put Buescher back several positions to start the final stage of the race in P15 with 96 laps to go. The final stage would only see three cautions, none of which involved the No. 17 on track. Buescher was able to keep his ride out of danger, while clawing up to fifth. During the final lap of the race the No. 17 was in position to grab at Top-5 finish, but ended up collected in the carnage that ensued off turn four. Buescher spun as just before the finish, sending him backwards across the line for a 7th place finish.

The NASCAR Cup Series heads to Circuit Of The Americas next Sunday, March 27th for the sixth race of the season, set for 2 p.m. ET on FOX, PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

Burton Finishes 25th at Atlanta

Harrison Burton and the No. 21 DEX Imaging team were among the numerous teams and drivers collected in crashes in the first Cup Series race on the reconfigured Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Burton was set to start Sunday’s Folds of Honor/QuikTrip 500 from 31st but had to move to the rear due to issues in pre-race inspection.

He battled a brake issue in the early going of the first Cup race since a remake of AMS, which now races more like Daytona or Talladega than the other intermediate-length tracks on the circuit.

His fortunes seemed to be improving until he was swept up in a multi-car melee on Lap 145 that left his DEX Imaging Mustang with significant suspension damage on the right front and right rear of the car.

From that point on, the team’s goal was to make it to the checkered flag. That was accomplished as Burton came home 25th in the 325-lap race.

Eddie Wood said Burton, crew chief Brian Wilson and the entire DEX team deserve credit for hanging tough on a challenging afternoon.

“Considering the amount of damage to the car we were lucky to finish the race,” Wood said.

“Harrison did his part, and the crew did a good job getting the car back out there.

“They worked on it every pit stop, but you can only do so much in that situation.”

Next up for Burton and the No. 21 team is a trip to the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, for the Echopark Texas Grand Prix.

RCR NCS Post Race Report: Atlanta

Austin Dillon and the No. 3 Bass Pro Shops/TRACKER Off Road Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Team Show Speed at Atlanta Motor Speedway Before Stage 1 Incident

Finish: 35th
Start: 17th
Points: 21st

“We had a really fast Bass Pro Shops/TRACKER Off Road Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 today, so it’s a real shame we didn’t get to finish the race. Handling-wise and speed-wise, we had a great car. At the end of Stage 1, William Byron and I had a good run through Turns 1 and 2. I got to the lead and he pushed me down the backstretch. I knew the Toyotas were going to go opposite of us, so I felt like having the No. 24 car block bottom and me go to the top would keep the Chevys up front. The No. 18 car decided to stick with me. I know he probably thought he was doing us a favor, but you can’t push on the left rear on exit off Turn 4 going as fast as we’re going. He just turned me and it took us both out of the race. It was the end of Stage 1. We were going to get a run down the front stretch right there, so I don’t know why he’s pushing dead center, at the three-quarter mark. It’s part of it I guess. It was fun racing there for a while with a really fast No. 3 Bass Pro Shops/TRACKER Off Road Chevy. My feelings are hurt. It’s been two weeks in a row we’ve been taken out of the race.” -Austin Dillon

Tyler Reddick and the No. 8 3CHI Chevrolet Team Run Up Front at Atlanta Motor Speedway Before On-Track Incident

Finish: 28th
Start: 5th
Points: 15th

“Man, what a day. This was a tough one because this team brought me a really fast 3CHI Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and we were up there battling hard for the lead for most of the first stage. We cut a tire while running at the front of the field and spun in front of everyone. Our RCR team worked really hard to repair the damage and keep us out on the track, but we were no where near competitive after that and it ultimately ended our race. This new Atlanta is wild and hopefully the tire issues can be resolved so we can come back next time and put on a really good show for the fans. My team has been working really hard to bring fast cars to the track each week and I’m proud of the effort of the No. 8 team today. Thank you to 3CHI for their support today and we’re looking forward to a better race at COTA.” -Tyler Reddick

Sheehan and LTK Finish Strong at Charlotte Trans Am

Charlotte, NORTH CAROLINA – March 21, 2022 – The 100-mile TA2 feature race on Saturday, March 19, saw attrition and endurance from driver Tom Sheehan and the Damon Racing outfit. With various challenges getting the LTK racecar fit for the tall order of the demanding Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval circuit – the No. 97 finished strong in P16.

We learned from the No. 97 LTK Insulation Technologies Damon Racing driver Tom Sheehan before Round 2 of the difficulties some of the TA2 teams were facing in obtaining parts for their cars, something that in turn impacts performance. With the next race at Road Atlanta now less than a week away, it gives teams a short order to turn around for Round 3.

Tom is one of the most sure-footed drivers in the paddock and after a disappointing qualifying session he had a good race, climbing from P23 on the grid to P16 by the checkered flag. In the process Tom collected 10 Championship points.

A regular in the top ten of the competitive TA2 class, Tom will be looking ahead to Road Atlanta next weekend optimistically. Unlike Charlotte, Tom is very well acquainted with Road Atlanta where his knowledge of the Georgia circuit will no doubt stand him in good stead. It’s a circuit with multiple elevation changes and one of the best tracks for setting up passes.

Perfect Weekend for Showtime Motorsports as Paul Menard Captures Trans Am Win at Charlotte

Charlotte, NORTH CAROLINA – March 21, 2022 – Paul Menard enjoyed a perfect weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Round 2 of the 2022 Trans Am presented by Pirelli Championship season. The Showtime Motorsports driver took pole position in qualifying, led for the most laps, had the fastest lap in the race, an excellent pace of 1:18:188, and most importantly won the race. The victory was also the first in the prestigious TA Class for Paul’s new team, Showtime Motorsports. Showtime principal Ken Thwaits also scored valuable Championship points, recovering from an early mishap to finish in P6.

Paul was quick off the trailer this weekend and duly scored pole position with a time of 1:17:010 with Ken not far behind in P4. The race itself was incident-packed with both 2021 Championship winner Chris Dyson and Ken Thwaits leaving the track at different times while unusually in a TA Class race, a pit stop for tires became advisable.

“It was chaos,” said Paul on climbing out of the winning No. 5 Franklin Road Apparel Showtime Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro.”I knew we had a good car. We were fast all weekend long. I took off and tried to build a gap to Chris [Dyson]. I knew tires were going to be an issue all day long.”

He went on, “We had speed in the car all weekend but Tomy had good pace and he was pushing me hard enough to where I was having to use the tires. I lost my radio so I had no idea where anybody was until I was on pit road after the checkers.”

Paul picked up 35 points for the win and Ken collected 20 points for his P6 finish in the No. 7 Franklin Road Apparel Showtime Motorsports Camaro. Ken’s personal experience of the race was tempered by the joy of seeing his team score their first TA Class win.

“Oh boy,” said Ken in the paddock after the race! “It didn’t start off very well. We went a little too hot going into Turn 1 and we barely nudged the tire wall. Then by the time the emergency crew got me out, I was a lap down. I thought it’s going to be a long day and a long race so we’ll keep soldiering on.”

“We changed the front tires but finally the motor just let go but I had a front row seat to see Paul win. I’m stoked that Paul won! I’m really happy for Paul and the team. Thank you guys so much.”

The result is understandably a cause of tremendous personal satisfaction for Ken Thwaits, with Showtime Motorsports now climbing to the pinnacle of Trans Am racing.

This weekend’s races from the Charlotte Roval will air on CBS Sports Network the week following the event. TA/XGT/SGT/GT will air on Friday, March 25 at 7:30 p.m. ET, while TA2 will air on Saturday, March 26 at 2:30 p.m. ET. Make sure you don’t miss out on seeing the dramatic action.
