Era Motorsport Confirms IMSA 2022 Season

Rolex 24 winners return to LMP2 class

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (December 21, 2021) – Era Motorsport, winners of the 2021 Rolex 24 At Daytona, will return to competition in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship for the 2022 race season, again racing the Oreca LMP2 07 car. Dwight Merriman and Ryan Dalziel will race together as the full-season drivers, reuniting the race-winning pair while team owner Kyle Tilley will act as the endurance driver in the calendar’s four endurance races.

The 2021 season proved to be a whirlwind season for the Indianapolis-based team, in its sophomore year of professional sports car racing. This year saw Era Motorsport expand to the Asian Le Mans Series and clinch their class championship before entering competition in the European Le Mans Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series, NASCAR Cup Series.

In the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the team produced a commanding performance at the Rolex 24 At Daytona, securing victory in the LMP2 class with Tilley, Merriman, Dalziel, and Paul-Loup Chatin. Chatin will again return to race with the team in January for the next running of the iconic event, setting the team up for success again with continuity of competitors. After Tilley, Merriman, and Dalziel produced an impressive second-place performance at the demanding Twelve Hours of Sebring, Merriman and Dalziel went on to secure the team’s second win of the year at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. The pair were well on their way to a podium finish at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca when another prototype lost control and took the No. 18 Era car out of contention in the final turns.

With a solid foundation and proven quality of performance, Merriman, Dalziel, and the team will be ready to fight when the season begins January 23, 2022, at the Roar Before the 24. Traditionally the first official test of the season, the Roar now holds several test days as well as the Motul Pole Award, a one-hour, 40-minute race that will determine the starting grid for the Rolex 24 At Daytona, January 29-30. As announced in August, the 2022 calendar will feature twelve rounds total, comprised of four endurance races and eight sprint rounds. The LMP2 class will compete in all four endurance events and three of the eight sprint races, returning to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, Mid-Ohio SportsCar Course, and Road America. DRIVER QUOTES

Dwight Merriman
It’s great to be getting the band back together for 2022 in IMSA. We really hit our stride as a team as the season progressed, and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do in this approaching race season. I’m thrilled to be having Ryan alongside me for the full season, and it’ll be great to still have Kyle around for the endurance events. Winning the Rolex 24 was such an amazing experience, and I’m looking forward to getting back to Daytona so we can defend that win and have a great 2022.

Ryan Dalziel
Our 2021 season was amazing, winning the Rolex 24 at Daytona, then backing it up with a second place at Sebring was a perfect start. We struggled a little in Europe with the rules etc. but when we came back to the USA we instantly found our stride winning at Road America. In my own head, I wasn’t looking at other IMSA opportunities, I was super happy staying at Era in my 2021 endurance role. However, when Kyle offered me to drive full season with Dwight, I was completely ecstatic. Kyle and Sarah Tilley have built an incredible team and I am honored to be part of it for 2022. I can’t wait for Daytona.

Kyle Tilley
Our third season in IMSA promises to be one of our biggest challenges yet. With an influx of teams to IMSA LMP2 competition, the level has certainly been raised. Whilst I’m going to miss being one of the full-season drivers in our #18 Oreca, it is the right decision for the business and the LMP2 team as a whole, as we strive to build our brand ahead of LMDH. That said, I am delighted to be able to stay as the 3rd for the Michelin Endurance Cup, and to defend our victory at the Rolex 24!

Paul-Loup Chatin
I am really happy to be back with the Era team for this new 2022 season and especially for the 24 hours of Daytona. We had an incredible time together last year with this success and it is very important for me to go back with Dwight, Kyle, and Ryan and fight for the first place again. The challenge is high but I am convinced that together we have the potential to achieve great things. A big thank you to the whole team for renewing their confidence in me

What Should I Know About Off-roading?

Photo by Robson Hatsukami Morgan on Unsplash

The off-roading hobby is among the most popular motorsports. It’s not hard to see why many people like it. It’s fast, exciting, and exhilarating, faces you with challenges you have to overcome, is satisfying, and more than flashy enough for the ladies.

Many people who consider themselves off-road enthusiasts, however, haven’t even been inside an off-road vehicle. Not that they’re to blame, since not everybody has as much exposure as people from other parts of the world.

Live in Kentucky, and you’re much more likely to be acquainted with the idea of huge 4×4 rigs compared to someone who grew up somewhere in Bordeaux, France.

However, if you did grow up in Bordeaux, then welcome to off-roading and it does not discriminate. This article will ideally help explain a couple of core off-road concepts for you to kickstart your future passion.

Basics of Off-roading

There are a lot of differences between driving off-road and driving on a road. The term “going off-road”, technically does not specifically imply going through the wilderness. As long as you’re driving on anything that is not a road, you’re off-roading.

However, it’s important to realize that this is generally damaging to the environment, and should be avoided if you can. This is why most areas in which off-roading is prevalent have established trails that are cared for and maintained by an organization that has an interest in keeping the motorsport’s good reputation.

While off-roading has its own aesthetic and culture, you theoretically don’t need a vehicle designed for the off-road to be an “off-roader”. That is because, by the time you get out of the trail you’re driving through, your average Sedan is going to come apart.

Passenger vehicles aren’t made for off-roading. You can take them off-road, and many people have, and will, but they do so because of necessity, not because it’s fun. If you’ve ever been a young child in the backseat of your parent’s car, you probably remember them groaning in annoyance whenever they had to drive through mud.

Harsh terrain conditions are not pleasant for vehicles, making it likely to damage them. Not only that, but there are several key characteristics between cars designed to brave the worst of what Mother Earth has to offer, and cars made to drive calmly and carefully over designated roads.

How Are Off-road Cars Different?

Off-road cars are mainly different in gear, equipment, and car parts, You can purchase a car that has been made to perform in off-road conditions since manufacture, or if you’re feeling adventurous or experimental, can try and modify a normal passenger car.

My recommendation would be to avoid that. Since you’re reading this article, odds are you’re probably not a mechanic or a particularly experienced engineer. Therefore, any modifications you make to your vehicle without proper knowledge or education are liable to damage it and make you lose out on a lot of money.

Don’t let me stop you, though. Want to turn a Toyota Prius into an off-road beast? Please do – it’s probably going to be one of the most entertaining things to come out of the hobby! Make sure to speak with a mechanic that can understand and follow your vision, though.

There are four main differences between car parts when it comes to off-road cars and normal ones.

  • Suspension – A good off-road vehicle needs good suspension. Otherwise, you’re going to be shaken and stirred.
  • Wheels – What makes or breaks an off-road car. A solid pair of wheels is an absolute necessity.
  • Bumpers – A lot of people buy aftermarket bumper upgrades for their cars after purchase.

Learn Even More

This article explains only the very basics and should only serve to give you background information on off-roading. If you’d like to learn more, find out everything about off-road cars here.

Otherwise, I hope you’ll be happily joining us whenever the next gathering or even competition takes place. There’s nothing better than spending time with your community!

Step by Step Guide to Tinting your Car Windows

Photo by Teddy Österblom on Unsplash

You may have considered getting your car windows professionally tinted only to find out that it was too expensive to fit into your budget. If this is the case you might be looking for an affordable alternative that can teach you how to tint car windows in an easy step by step guide.

Tinted windows in your vehicle can provide several benefits. While the most obvious advantage is that it gives you and your passengers an added sense of privacy, there are other benefits as well including a reduction in the interior heat of your car, protection from upholstery fading and less glare.

Window tinting can also protect you from the side effects of ultraviolet rays. There are two types of ultraviolet rays — UVA which stands for Type A ultraviolet and UVB which stands for Type B ultraviolet.

Both UVA and UVB rays can cause sunburn and they can be contributing factors in the formation of skin cancer.

UVA rays can also accelerate the skin aging process which can cause signs of premature aging such as skin wrinkles. Exposure to UVB rays are known to cause various skin cancers, including melanoma.

Before you begin the process of tinting your windows, research the different brands to find the one that is best for you. Some brands are better suited for professionals and may require professional installation to satisfy their warranty requirements.

Before you begin, there are several items you need to have on hand to complete the installation process. You will need window cleaner, a spray bottle of hot water, a tape measure, a flat-edge razor, a small squeegee, the window tint film, and the application solution that was included with the window tint film.

Once you make the decision to tint your windows, the first step and the most important, is to prepare your windows by properly cleaning them. It is best to do this in an enclosed space such as a garage to prevent any dust from settling on your windows. Take the time to clean your windows thoroughly and clean them a minimum of three times to make certain the glass is completely clean.

Window tint or film usually comes in rolls. Measure your windows a few times to be sure you have the exact measurement and then cut the sheet of film for each window, leaving an excess of at least 2 inches on each end. You can cut off the excess when you apply the tint.

Apply the application spray that was included with the window film and pull off the adhesive backing. Make sure the adhesive backing is facing the window and apply it by beginning at the bottom of the window and smoothing it out as you go to prevent bubbles from forming underneath the window film. Cut off the excess using a flat-edge razor.

You may want to go to YouTube to find and watch a few videos about installing window tint. Search for videos with a large number of views and favorable comments.

Use a squeegee to smooth out any bubbles or creases. Use a spray bottle filled with hot water to apply to the film as you work from the center outward to the edges. Cut off any excess film.

Notes:

Your window tint film should include guidance on how to maintain it and which cleaning solutions to use. Most manufacturers of window tint film advise that you should not roll down your windows for a minimum of three days after installation.

45 Years of International Sports 2000 Competition to be Celebrated at the 44th HSR Mitty at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, April 28 – May 1

CLEARWATER, Florida (December 17, 2021) – Sports 2000, the popular road racing category that has provided an affordable yet competitive entry into sports car racing for thousands of racers around the world, will be the featured marque of the 44th Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) Mitty at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, April 28 – May 1, 2022.

Introduced in the United Kingdom in 1976, Sports 2000 first ran as a series with a 20 round championship in 1977 to begin a successful run of both amateur and professional competition around the world that remains strong today in vintage and historic events. Next year marks the 45th year of series competition for Sports 2000 – also know as S2000 or simply S2 – and the milestone will be recognized as part of the official marque celebration at the blockbuster HSR Mitty event.

Sports 2000 are already popular race cars of choice for HSR competitors. The Mitty featured marque announcement follows last September’s HSR Fall Historics that attracted a bumper crop of S2000 teams and drivers. Ben Myers recently was presented with the 2021 HSR Most Improved Driver Award and drove a 2001 No. 29 Carbir CS2 S2000 (pictured at top) prepared by Sasco Sports to the honor.

Winning professional race car driver Corey Fergus (center in picture below) co-drove a 1991 No. 3 Jaguar XJR-16 with Malcolm Ross to the Group C victory in this year’s HSR Classic Daytona 24 Hour race at Daytona International Speedway (DIS) in October. Like his championship-winning father John Fergus – who won more than 10 amateur and professional Sports 2000 titles – the younger Fergus first made his mark in S2000, including winning the National Championship S2 race at the legendary SCCA Runoffs in 2012.

In addition to Lola, Chevron and Carbir, the ample list of manufacturers that have produced Sports 2000 includes Crossle, Doran, March, MCR, Reynard, Rotor, Royale, Shannon, Swift, Tiga and Van Diemen.

The 2022 44th HSR Mitty schedule will again feature Sports 2000 in its own Run Group in addition to the category being showcased in the event’s Saturday feature race.

Competitor entry and spectator ticket information will be announced early in 2022. A variety of ticket options, from tent camping and daily admission on up to RV Parking and weekend admission, will be available for purchase and shipping in advance of the event. Please visit www.HSRRace.com next year for entry and ticket sales dates and overall HSR Mitty event information.

About HSR: Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) was formed in the mid-1970s with an event at Road Atlanta. There was one goal then and it remains true today: to celebrate the race cars from the past.
