DGR NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Race Advance: Las Vegas II

Friday, September 24
Track: Las Vegas Motor Speedway, 1.5-mile oval
Race: 19 of 22
Event: Victoria’s Voice Foundation 200 (134 laps, 201 miles)

Schedule
Race: 9:00 p.m. ET (FS1)

Hailie Deegan, No. 1 Craftsman Ford F-150

  • Deegan is making her 20th career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) start on Friday evening at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
  • For the first time this season, Deegan will drive the red-and-black Craftsman branded Ford F-150.
  • The California native is making her second Truck Series start at the 1.5-mile track. In her first start at the Nevada track earlier this year in March, Deegan started 30th and finished 28th after receiving damage in a multi-truck accident a little over halfway through the event.
  • In last week’s race at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway, the Ford driver started 23rd and finished 25th after her night was ended 12 laps prematurely due to an accident she was unable to avoid on the racing surface.
  • In addition to the 1.5-mile track in Las Vegas, Deegan has two starts at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Dirt Track, located just outside the paved oval. In 2018, she started from the pole position and finished runner-up in the 102-lap event. In 2019, the young driver started eighth and led the final lap en route to earn her first of two K&N Pro Series West victories that season.
  • Veteran crew chief Mike Hillman Jr. has called the shots for 16 NCWTS events at Las Vegas, including two wins – Todd Bodine in September 2005 and Kyle Busch in March 2018.

Tanner Gray, No. 15 Ford Performance F-150

  • Gray makes his 19th start of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) season and 45th of his career on Friday evening.
  • The Ford Performance driver is eager to return to Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The 1.5-mile oval is the site of his second best finish of the season so far. In March, he guided the No. 15 F-150 from his 22nd-place starting position to a 12th-place finish.
  • The 22-year-old driver hasn’t been able to find any luck so far this season. Last Thursday night at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway, he was moving forward in the field when he suffered a flat left rear tire that sent him spinning into the outside wall. Unfortunately, the damage was too extensive to continue and he was credited with a 38th-place finish.
  • With Marcus Richmond having obligations in Martinsville, Chad Johnston will step in and call the race for Gray. Johnston has called 11 career races at Las Vegas with three top-fives and six top-10s.
  • Although Richmond won’t be in Las Vegas, one interesting driver that Richmond has worked with at Las Vegas in the NCWTS is none other than Kevin Hamlin – the current spotter for the No. 15 team. The pair worked together on the No. 4 truck for Bobby Hamilton Racing in 2007.

McDowell heads into Las Vegas 43 points out of 15th.

We want to make history and we’re driven to have CarParts.com be a part of that.”

McDowell heads into the Las Vegas Motor Speedway with a best finish of 17th last year.

CORVETTE RACING AT LONG BEACH: Southern California Street Fight

· First race in southern California for mid-engine Corvette C8.R
· Milner, Tandy coming off GTLM victory at Laguna Seca
· All four Corvette Racing drivers with previous Long Beach victories

DETROIT (Sept. 21, 2021) – Corvette Racing’s mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette C8.R has been on a global tour since its debut in January 2020. It has raced at racetracks throughout North America, plus Belgium and France since then.

Now the Corvette Racing program is set to make its return to southern California this weekend for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach – postponed from its traditional spring date due to COVID-19.

Long Beach is the second street circuit event of the season for Corvette Racing, following the Chevrolet Sports Car Challenge in June at Detroit’s Belle Isle. Tommy Milner and Nick Tandy teamed for a GT Le Mans (GTLM) victory there in a non-points outing in the No. 4 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Corvette C8.R, and the pair is coming off a win at Laguna Seca two weeks ago up the coast in Monterey.

Second went to GTLM Drivers Championship leaders Antonio Garcia and Jordan Taylor in the No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Corvette. The duo has four wins on the season and five pole positions, plus a runner-up finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The combined efforts have Chevrolet in the Manufacturers Championship lead.

All four drivers have previous victories at Long Beach. Milner and Taylor each of three while Garcia and Tandy have one each.

Chevrolet on Display at Long Beach
The return of Corvette Racing and Chevrolet to Long Beach will carry extra flare with the inclusion of the Chevrolet Motorsports Display to the event weekend. Located inside the Long Beach Expo Center, the Chevrolet Motorsports Display will be open to fans throughout the weekend and will be full of Chevrolet vehicles that spectators can learn more about during a busy event.

The Chevrolet Motorsports Display opens at 8 a.m. Friday through Sunday. Numerous Chevrolet vehicles and other highlights include:

• A 2022 Corvette Stingray IMSA GTLM Championship Edition coupe
• A 2022 Corvette Stingray convertible
• Additional Chevrolet products such as the 2020 Blazer, 2021 Camaro 1LE and 2021 Silverado Trail Boss
• A special display with various Corvette Racing artifacts
• An opportunity to receive a Corvette T-shirt

Corvette Racing will contest the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach on Sept. 24-25 from the Long Beach Street Circuit in Long Beach, Calif. Live television coverage will air live on NBCSN at 5 p.m. ET on Sept. 25 with live streaming coverage on TrackPass and NBC Sports Gold. Live audio coverage from IMSA Radio will be available on IMSA.com, XM 202 and SiriusXM Online 992.

ANTONIO GARCIA, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: “I think there are a few things we can transfer from Detroit to Long Beach. In a way, there are some similarities and those are mainly the walls! The track surface and the way the circuit is laid out is a little different. We need to work a little bit and look at some past race data. I’m sure we will come up with a good setup to start. It won’t be the first time for the C8.R on a street circuit, so that’s a good start. We can learn a lot from that.
“I’ve led in the Hairpin two years in a row and didn’t win either time! Those are memories that you sometimes have – which races you’ve won and which ones you’ve lost. Especially the way we lost those races will probably stick in my head for a long time! A win there would definitely help forgetting about those moments.”

JORDAN TAYLOR, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: “Detroit was a good lesson for us to have that weekend and understand what the C8.R is going to be like on a street course. Long Beach is always a different animal. It’s always difficult there with how limited the track time is and keeping up with the track evolution. The Corvette guys have had so much history there that we can understand how the track will develop so focus on the car itself and what the drivers need. I have a lot of confidence. Long Beach is always super-intense. I’ve been there many times in a prototype but this is my first time in a GT class. It’s always looked like a proper street fight in the GT classes so I’m sure it will be like that again this year, as well.”

TOMMY MILNER, NO. 4 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: “Both Detroit and Long Beach have track surfaces that are comparable. I think Long Beach is a little more difficult because it used more as a public road throughout the rest of the year, so it is quite dirty. As seems always the case, it’s very dirty and dusty, and we spend an hour of the first two-hour practice cleaning the track. With Detroit under our belt – the first street race for the C8.R – we can take some of those lessons, setup options and things we tried to see how they carry over to Long Beach. Hopefully we can make the most of an already compressed schedule and limited track time to get our Corvette in a place that is comfortable for Nick and I.”

NICK TANDY, NO. 4 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: “Long Beach is always one of the events I look forward to most of the season. The actual race is different in that it’s a short race, a single stop and different to what we normally do. The track is what I personally look forward to most. It’s a street circuit, yes, but it’s quite different to some other street tracks I’ve raced on before. You have that long open blast down Shoreline Drive and some fast stuff in the middle sector as well. It’s an enjoyable track to try and get the car to the limit. We did have a good run at Detroit in the No. 4 Corvette. We know the cars work well in this configuration. It’s been something I’ve looked forward to since our success at Detroit.”

Sheehan Aiming to Climb Top Ten at VIR Trans Am

Bow, NEW HAMPSHIRE – September 21, 2021 – Round 11 of the TA2 division of the 2021 Trans Am presented by Pirelli Championship season gets underway September 24 to 26 at Virginia International Raceway. New Hampshire’s Tom Sheehan is well positioned in P7 out of 65 starters in the Drivers’ classification. Tom enjoyed a great weekend at VIR last year when he became the first driver in the history of Trans Am TA2 class racing to notch his 100th race start. The most experienced man on the grid then went on to finish in a highly creditable P7 in the 2020 Heacock Gold Cup, an all class, 42 car mega race that proved hugely popular with fans and viewers.

There were two such feature races at Watkins Glen earlier this month but the extra traffic caused lots of problems with both races marred by repeated and sometimes lengthy yellow flags. Nevertheless, Tom, piloting the trademark yellow No. 97 LTK Insulation Technologies Damon Racing Ford Mustang put in two terrific shifts in difficult circumstances. He climbed from his starting position on both occasions and finished in P11 and P10 in Saturday and Sunday’s races respectively.

It hasn’t been an easy season for Tom and the Damon Racing team the team is ready for a breakthrough, “Hard racing, though luck. We leave it behind us. Some sweat, a lot of sweat. Hard work but this team is going to have our day. We are excited to show what we have, time to put it all together.”

Recently chosen as one of Car and Driver Magazine’s top six road courses in the Nation, Virginia International Raceway is a multi-purpose road course which for Trans Am Racing uses the Full Course of 3.27 miles. Tom’s first sight of the track will be on Friday September 24 when there are optional Test Sessions at Noon and at 5:30 p.m. Official practice is at 12:10 p.m. on Saturday lunchtime with the qualifying session scheduled for 6:10 p.m. on Saturday. The feature race is over 31 laps of the circuit and goes green at 3:35 p.m. on Sunday.

Joey Logano (9th), Brad Keselowski (10th) and Kevin Harvick (12th) all start the three-race round below the cut off but well within striking range of advancing. On the NXS side, Austin Cindric begins defense of his series championship as the top seed while Riley Herbst opens in 11th place and seven points below the final transfer spot.

BRISCOE COMPLETES VEGAS FIRST

Chase Briscoe became the first driver to win both NASCAR XFINITY Series races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway since the track began hosting two events a year in 2018. Briscoe won last year’s spring event, which had to be run over the course of two days due to rain, after leading a race-high 89 laps. The key to his victory, however, was the pit crew, which got Briscoe off pit road first and allowed him to lead the final 36 circuits to post his first win of the season. He followed that up in the 2020 playoff opener with a dominating performance that saw him lead 164-of-200 laps. Briscoe won all three stages and left the track with the points lead and a guaranteed spot in the Round of 8.

VEGAS PROVES TO BE LOGANO’S BEST TRACK

Joey Logano has two career victories at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and those wins have helped make the track his best statistically on the circuit. Logano sports an 8.4 average finish in 16 career starts, which he maintained after a ninth-place run earlier this year. In fact, it’s the only track in which he’s made more than 10 career starts where his average finish is in single digits. Besides his two victories, Logano has 6 top-5 and 11 top-10 finishes at LVMS since joining the circuit in 2009.

ROUSH RULES

There have been two Roush Fenway Racing drivers who have posted consecutive NASCAR Cup Series victories at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Jeff Burton won in 1999 and 2000 while Matt Kenseth did it in his championship season of 2003 and 2004. In fact, Roush Fenway Racing has been a force in both the NASCAR Cup and NASCAR XFINITY Series at the 1.5-mile facility. The organization has posted seven NCS wins and six NXS victories for a total of 13 overall, which includes back-to-back weekend sweeps in 1999 and 2000. In addition, RFR has three NASCAR Camping World Truck Series triumphs.

TEAM PENSKE ON VEGAS ROLL

Team Penske has had great success at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and will be looking to extend its years of winning at least one Cup race to four this weekend. Joey Logano has won twice during this stretch while teammate Brad Keselowski has three wins at the 1.5-mile track since coming to Ford in 2013. Overall, Team Penske has five wins in the last 11 series starts on the Cup side while also producing three victories in the NASCAR XFINITY Series during that same stretch of time.

SWEEP DELIGHT FOR KESELOWSKI

Brad Keselowski completed a weekend sweep in 2014 after taking the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR XFINITY Series events on consecutive days. Even though Keselowski led the most laps in the NCS race, he needed a little bit of luck and got it on the final lap when Dale Earnhardt Jr., who was in conservation mode, ran out of gas on the back straightaway. That enabled Keselowski to win going away and post the first of his six victories that season.

MARTIN LEADS FORD CHARGE IN INAUGURAL VEGAS CUP EVENT

Ford took the checkered flag at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the inaugural race at the 1.5-mile facility on March 1, 1998 as Mark Martin led a manufacturer runaway that saw 13 of the top 14 finishers driving a Taurus. The win was the first for Taurus, which became the first full-time four-door entry in NASCAR, after Ford decided to use it in the NASCAR Cup Series starting with the 1998 season. Martin bested Roush Fenway teammate Jeff Burton by 1.605 seconds to win the Las Vegas 400 with Rusty Wallace, Johnny Benson and Jeremy Mayfield rounding out the top-five. The only non-Ford to finish in the top-10 was the late Dale Earnhardt, who was eighth.

Taylor, Albuquerque, No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 Team on the Hunt to Secure the Acura DPi’s First Victory at Long Beach

Brownsburg, Ind. (September 21, 2021) – Current 2021 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship leaders Ricky Taylor, Filipe Albuquerque and the No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 team will compete at the fan favorite 1.968 mile, 11-turn Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach street course after a dominant pole to podium win at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca earlier this month.

In their seven trips to Long Beach, the team has three victories, five podiums, two poles and have led 183 laps. Ricky Taylor has scored his three wins (2015-17) at the circuit while previously driving with Wayne Taylor Racing, most recently he finished second in 2019, which is Acura’s best finish at the street circuit.

“Long Beach is a big home race for Acura and over the past two attempts, victory has eluded us,” said the two-time IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Champion Ricky Taylor. “The circuit has been dominated by Cadillac. With only two races remaining in our season, a win would not only be sweet for victory on Acura’s home soil but also take the pressure off us going into the Petit Le Mans endurance race in November. We finally flipped the momentum mid-season and are back to winning. It feels good to be back on the right side of it, but we need to keep our heads down because we still have a big target on our backs.”

With a 100% success rate along the streets of Long Beach, Filipe Albuquerque enters the weekend with two previous wins from 2018 and 2019. The Portuguese driver will look to secure another victory at the historic circuit and the first for Acura.

“I’m definitely very pumped because it’s such a very special event and track,” commented Filipe Albuquerque. “The momentum coming from a win at Laguna Seca helps our whole team. We need to continue the good work; the job is not done yet and we still have two races to go. Long Beach is the home of Acura, so we all want to do well. We are going to give our best. The pressure is more on the other side than our side. We had the pressure that we needed to win at Laguna and now they have the pressure to win in Long Beach.”

“Going into Laguna we couldn’t really get ourselves into the points situation because when we’ve been leading for so long and the points gap was getting narrower and narrower, we needed to focus on one race at time,” said team owner Wayne Taylor. “We did that at Laguna where Filipe got the pole, Ricky finished the race and we won. It really helped us. Now as we head to Long Beach it will be difficult because the Cadillacs has quite a bit of an edge. Like my team always done, they always pull something out. I’m relying on all of them and it’s a win-win, we have to win.”

Practice for the 100-minute sprint race begins on Friday, September 24th at 12:45 p.m. ET with qualifying following at 7:50 p.m. ET. Green flag for the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach will wave at 5:05 p.m. ET. Live coverage will begin at 5:00 p.m. ET on NBC Sports and TrackPass on NBC Sports.

Violet Defense Joins Roush Fenway as Official Partner

Will Serve as Primary Partner on both No. 6 and No. 17 in Select Races

CONCORD, N.C. (Sept. 21, 2021) – Violet Defense – an Orlando-based germ-killing company with patented UV technology – has entered into a multi-year partnership with Roush Fenway Racing. As part of the deal that runs through the 2023 season, Violet Defense will serve as the primary partner for a combined four races in the remaining 2021 season on both Ryan Newman and Chris Buescher’s Ford Mustangs. For the 2022 and 2023 seasons, Violet Defense will continue to be featured on the No. 6 car for multiple races, and join Brad Keselowski as he makes his debut with Roush Fenway in the 2022 season.

As part of the partnership, Violet Defense will also be identifying opportunities to protect the Roush Fenway team with its UV disinfection technology, both at the track and at their headquarters operations in Concord, N.C.

“We are excited to be supporting the Roush Fenway team, both on and off the track,” said Terrance Berland, CEO of Violet Defense. “It is our goal to continue to find new and innovative ways to deploy our UV disinfection solutions to help keep the athletes and staff healthy and at the top of their game. And we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to be part of Brad’s inaugural season with the team, and look forward to the energy around his arrival.”

The brand makes its debut during the Sept. 26 race weekend at Las Vegas on the No. 17 Ford for the first of two consecutive primary events, with the second being the high-speed race at Talladega Superspeedway a week later. Newman will carry the colors of Violet Defense for the first time at Texas on Oct. 17, and again a week later at Kansas Speedway on Oct. 24.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Violet Defense to the Roush Fenway family,” said Steve Newmark, President of Roush Fenway Racing. “Their expertise as a company is a perfect fit for us on the track and off, and their services are especially critical during times like these. Their messaging and branding will undoubtedly stand out at their upcoming races, and we look forward to working with their team this fall and for years to come.”

Buescher will make his 11th Cup start at Las Vegas where this spring he ran 14th. Overall in ‘Sin City,’ Hall of Fame owner Jack Roush has 16 wins including seven in the NASCAR Cup Series.

The annual fall event at Talladega will be packed full of action as Buescher is slated for his 13th start at the 2.66-mile Superspeedway, where last fall he crossed the line sixth. Roush Fenway has eight Talladega wins all-time, including five in the NCS with the most recent coming in 2017.

Texas Motor Speedway is the site of 18 wins for Jack Roush including nine in the Cup Series, and also the site of one of Newman’s 18 wins all-time. He went to victory lane back in 2003 in just his second Cup outing at the 1.5-mile track, and has three top-15s in his last four starts at the track.

Kansas wraps up Violet Defense’s four-race slate in the 2021 NASCAR Playoffs, a track where Roush has four Cup victories with three different drivers. It is also the place where Newman made his first-ever Cup start, and his start there this spring served as career No. 700, joining an elite list of only three active drivers with that feat. Newman also won at Kansas in 2003.

● While the NASCAR Playoffs have been in existence since 2004, it wasn’t until 2014 that rounds were added, with three separate cuts whittling down the 16-driver field during the 10-race playoffs. After the first three playoff races, the four lowest drivers in points get eliminated. Then, after the next three races, only the top-eight drivers move on. Three more races follow, with only the top-four drivers advancing to the Championship 4 where they compete in a winner-take-all title match in the season finale. Harvick is in the midst of his 12th consecutive playoff appearance and his 15th overall. He has now advanced out of the Round of 16 in all eight editions of the current playoff format. Coming into this season, he had advanced all the way to the Round of 8 since 2014, and five times he’s competed in the Championship 4, winning the NASCAR Cup Series title in 2014.
● Harvick comes into Las Vegas on a three-race top-10 streak, a run punctuated by a strong second-place drive last Saturday night at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway where he led three times for 71 laps. Before finishing second at Bristol, Harvick finished eighth Sept. 11 at Richmond (Va.) Raceway and fifth Sept. 4 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. Harvick has finished among the top-15 in the last nine races, a streak that began July 11 with an 11th-place result at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
● Since joining SHR in 2014, Harvick has finished among the top-10 in seven of the 11 NASCAR Cup Series races contested at Las Vegas. In that span, Harvick has led 621 laps and won twice – March 2015 and March 2018
● Harvick’s win at Las Vegas in March 2018 was his 100th career victory across NASCAR’s top-three national touring series – Cup, Xfinity and Camping World Truck. He has since scored 19 more Cup wins to bring his tally to 119 total victories – 58 in Cup, 47 in Xfinity and 14 in Truck. Only three other drivers in NASCAR history have surpassed 100 wins across NASCAR’s top-three series: Kyle Busch (222 wins), Richard Petty (200 wins) and David Pearson (106 wins).
● Harvick has a total of 12 top-10s at Las Vegas, the most of any active NASCAR Cup Series driver. Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano are next best with 11 top-10s apiece.
● Harvick has made 11 starts in the Xfinity Series at Las Vegas. He has two wins, six top-fives and seven top-10s. His first Xfinity Series win came in 2004 when he started 11th and led 14 laps. His second triumph came in 2010 when he started second and led 82 laps.
● Harvick has made three Truck Series starts at Las Vegas, earning two top-10s with a best finish of eighth in 1997.

Kevin Harvick, Driver of the No. 4 Subway Delivery Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing

You’ve won at Las Vegas twice and have finished among the top-10 there seven times since joining SHR in 2014. What do you need to be quick at Las Vegas?

“Las Vegas has a lot of tire fall off, so it’ll be important to have a good-handling Subway Delivery Ford Mustang. It’s also a track where you’re constantly moving around trying to find the right grip.”

You advanced to the Round of 12 for the eighth straight time. What do you need to do in theses next three races to advance to the Round of 8?

“Right now, we’re just taking it one week at a time. That’s really the best way to go about it, and see where it all falls in the end.”

Does the intensity of the racing increase after each playoff round?

“For us, there’s no intensity dialed up. It’s exactly the same as it would be for the first race of the season, the second race, the third race. We try to approach things the same way, whether we’re running well or running badly, and whether or not it’s a cutoff race. You try to dot all the I’s and cross all the T’s and control all the things that you can control, perform at a high level and do the things that you know how to do, whether it’s me in the car or Rodney (Childers, crew chief) on the pit box or everybody around us, it just takes the execution of a complete race. Our team has done a great job of that all year. Obviously, our cars have not performed to the level that we’d have liked them to perform, but we’ve been getting the finishes that we have and keeping ourselves around. We just keep plugging away and keep trying to reach out and do what we can by getting good finishes and not making any mistakes. That’s really what it boils down to this time of year. It doesn’t matter how you get there, it just matters if you advance or you don’t advance, and a lot of times it comes by controlling the things that you can control.”

You were very consistent throughout the regular season and that has continued into the playoffs. How important is it to maintain that consistency?

“We’ve gone about this a number of different ways throughout the years. We’ve pointed our way through and we’ve won our way through when our backs were against the wall. You’ve got to take what each race will give you, and there’s no way you can force things. That’s where a lot of people get themselves in trouble – when they start trying to do things outside their comfort zone of where their car is that particular day. Some days you have what you have and you need to get that finish with your car, and if you do that, usually you finish better than probably you would have otherwise. Las Vegas is no different. We’ll just have to go out there and grind away and see where we end up.”
