21 Team To Honor Master Technicians at Michigan

It’s a time-honored tradition in NASCAR racing for competitors to have family members as guests at a team’s home track. It’s only fitting that as the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane team competes this weekend at the sponsor’s home track, Michigan International Speedway, the iconic No. 21 Mustang will carry the names of 163 individuals who achieved their 20-Year Senior Master Technician status in 2020.

Having established the Senior Master Technician Program in 1999, Ford honored the first class to reach the 20-year milestone at the 2019 MIS race. Ford Senior Master Technicians are experts in engines, drivetrains and chassis. Each year, senior master technicians take part in new required training to improve upon their expertise.

Working together with Ford is a big part of the history and heritage of Wood Brothers Racing, which has fielded Ford vehicles exclusively throughout their 71 years in the sport.

For the past 21 years, the team has been sponsored by Ford’s Motorcraft division. Over those years, the No. 21 team has worked with Ford to help attract and retain highly skilled individuals that are needed for the automotive technician field.

New Ford Tech is an avenue for high school and technical college students to pursue a career as an automotive technician. Multiple programs, including Ford’s Automotive Student Service Educational Training (ASSET), partner with colleges across the country for education and job placement upon graduation. Learn more at newfordtech.com. Some of Ford’s 20-Year Senior Master Technicians being honored this week began their careers in the ASSET program.

Eddie Wood said years of turning wrenches on the family race cars have given him and his family a special appreciation for those members of the Ford family who service passenger cars.

“Recognizing these incredibly skilled and loyal technicians was a great honor back in 2019,” Wood said. “We are glad to be able to do this again this year, because these are the men and women who keep our cars safely on the road every day.”

Matt DiBenedetto said he and the entire Motorcraft/Quick Lane team are working hard to make it a special weekend for their fellow members of the Blue Oval team.

He said he and spotter Doug Campbell are hoping to capitalize on restarts, as they did at MIS last year en route to finishes of 15th and seventh in the two Cup races there.

“Doug and I study really hard for this one and treat it like a superspeedway as far as being prepared for restarts,” DiBenedetto said. “That’s a big key to success for the race.”

He also said the team is hoping to build on its recent string of strong finishes. His fifth-place finish on Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway was the team’s fifth finish of 11th or better in the past five races.

“Our Motorcraft/Quick Lane team has really been clicking so well,” he said. “My crew chief Jonathan Hassler and the whole team have been doing an excellent job.”

“Hopefully we win one of these things. That’s the main goal.”

There will be no practice or qualifying prior to the start of Sunday’s FireKeepers Casino 400, which is set to get the green flag just after 3 p.m. Eastern Time.

NBCSN will carry the TV broadcast, and there will be Stage breaks at Laps 60 and 120.

Busch Light Apple Racing: Kevin Harvick Michigan Advance

KEVIN HARVICK

No. 4 Busch Light Apple Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing

Event Overview
● Event: FireKeepers Casino 400 (Round 25 of 36)
● Time/Date: 3 p.m. EDT on Sunday, Aug. 22
● Location: Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn
● Layout: 2-mile oval
● Laps/Miles: 200 laps / 400 miles
● Stage Lengths: Stage 1: 60 laps / Stage 2: 60 laps / Final Stage: 80 laps
● TV/Radio: NBCSN / MRN / SiriusXM NASCAR Radio

Notes of Interest

● Kevin Harvick is the apple of one’s eye at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, which is fitting since the 2004 NASCAR Cup Series champion will race the No. 4 Busch Light Apple Ford Mustang in the FireKeepers Casino 400. In his last six races at the 2-mile oval, Harvick has won four times and finished second once. His worst finish is a mere seventh.

● Who was the last driver not named Harvick to win at Michigan? That would be Joey Logano on June 10, 2019 when Harvick finished seventh. What else was No. 1 on that date? Lil Nas X’s Old Town Road was the No. 1 song and The Secret Life of Pets 2 was the No. 1 movie until being usurped by Toy Story 4.

● Harvick has won the past three races at Michigan, including a sweep of the doubleheader last year. In taking back-to-back checkered flags on Aug. 8-9 at Michigan, Harvick became the first driver to win two NASCAR Cup Series races on consecutive days since Richard Petty in 1971 when Petty won July 14 at Albany-Saratoga Speedway in Malta, New York, and July 15 at Islip (N.Y.) Speedway.

● Harvick’s sweep of last year’s Michigan doubleheader earned him an accolade no other driver had ever achieved. He was the first NASCAR Cup Series driver in series history to win on back-to-back days at the same track.

● Harvick can tie another record with a win Sunday at Michigan. Bill Elliott holds the series record for most consecutive wins at Michigan with four, as the NASCAR Hall of Famer swept the track’s slate of NASCAR Cup Series races in 1985 and 1986. Harvick has won four of the last five races at Michigan, including the last three. He is one of just 10 drivers who have earned consecutive wins at Michigan, joining Bobby Allison (1971 sweep), David Pearson (1972 sweep-1973 and 1974-1975), Cale Yarborough (1983 sweep), Elliott (1985 sweep-1986 sweep), Bobby Labonte (1995 sweep), Mark Martin (1997-1998), Ryan Newman (2003-2004), Greg Biffle (2004-2005 and 2012-2013) and Kyle Larson (2016-2017 sweep).

● The FireKeepers Casino 400 will mark Harvick’s 41st career NASCAR Cup Series start at Michigan, tying him with Kurt Busch for the most among active drivers. Since making his first start at the track on June 10, 2001, Harvick has scored five wins, 15 top-five and 21 top-10 finishes while leading 699 laps, all of which are series bests. Harvick’s five wins are two more than Busch, Larson and Logano, all of whom are tied with three wins apiece. Harvick’s 15 top-fives are five more than next best Martin Truex Jr. (10 top-fives). Harvick’s 21 top-10s are four more than next best Logano (17 top-10s), as are his 699 laps led, which is 109 more laps than Logano (590 laps led).

● Harvick’s first NASCAR Cup Series win at Michigan came on Aug. 15, 2010. Fifteen races passed before Harvick’s second win on Aug. 12, 2018, but in that span he finished second six times, including a run of four straight runner-up finishes (2013-2014).

● Harvick has flexed his muscles outside of the NASCAR Cup Series at Michigan. In 11 career NASCAR Xfinity Series starts at the track, Harvick has a win (August 2003), four top-fives and nine top-10s. And in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, Harvick has a win (August 2011) and two top-fives and four top-11s.

● If Michigan were a bingo card, Harvick would’ve yelled “Bingo” more than anyone… until Sunday’s FireKeepers Casino 400. Busch Light Apple is integrating Bingo into the 200-lap race where fans will have the chance to win $1,000 per stage and other Busch Light Apple prizes by playing its version of Bingo on Twitter. All fans have to do is follow @BuschBeer, turn on their notifications, and play along. Whenever anything listed on the Busch Light Apple Bingo board happens, fans have the opportunity to win Busch Light Apple swag. If three spaces connect, they have a chance to win $1,000. Just tweet #BuschLightApple #Sweepstakes when anything on the board happens, and you’ll be entered for a chance to win. Bingo blocks include “Start of Stage”, “Caution Flag”, “Harvick in First”, “Harvick Pit Stop”, “End of Stage”, “20th Lap of Stage”, “Busch Light Apple Commercial” and “40th Lap of Stage”. FYI: The first two stages are 60 laps apiece and the final stage is 80 laps. The FireKeepers Casino 400 starts at 3 p.m. EDT and can be seen live on NBCSN and, of course, those 21 and older can best enjoy it with a Busch Light Apple, a crisp, refreshing, apple-flavored lager with a touch of sweet on the front end and a clear, beer finish on the back end. It is available for a limited time only in 12-, 24- and 30-packs at a store near you.

Kevin Harvick, Driver of the No. 4 Busch Light Apple Ford Mustang

What was it like to sweep both Michigan races last year, and on back-to-back days no less?

“The doubleheader at Michigan was a unique situation because we had to run back-to-back races due to COVID and how it affected our schedule. Michigan has always been a great racetrack for us. We’ve been strong every time we’ve been there. Being able to win both of those races was pretty awesome just because of the fact that it’s probably something we might not have the opportunity to do again, especially now since we’re only racing at Michigan once a year. It was a great moment for our team.”

When you swept last year’s races at Michigan on consecutive days, you did something that hadn’t been done since Richard Petty in 1971. Does a milestone like that resonate with you, especially when you’re doing something only achieved by someone best known as “The King”?

“Absolutely. When you start hearing things that are being compared to The King, you have to kind of step back and look and say, ‘Alright, that was pretty cool,’ because if The King’s the only other one who’s done it, that’s a pretty cool stat. And it’s a huge accomplishment for the team and their preparation and the effort that they put into the weekend. It’s something you can always say you did that The King did.”

How satisfying were your back-to-back wins last year at Michigan?

“When you look at being able to do that two days in a row, it says a lot about the guys working on the cars and being able to turn that around. Being able to say, ‘Hey, we need to do this better or that better.’ After you just won the race literally less than 24 hours later, you go back out on the racetrack and be good with those changes to be confident enough to say the track is going to change, we need to make these changes and do that again. There’s an evolution that needs to take place, and the evolution that took place over the course of two days was definitely challenging – to be able to convince yourself that you needed to do better than you did the first day. But you had to know that everybody was going to get better the second day and the racetrack was going to be different. Those guys do a great job prepping the Busch Light Apple Ford Mustang and it makes my job easy.”

What can you take from last year’s success at Michigan and apply to this year’s race?

“With so many stipulations put on the rules this year about what you can and can’t race, you would hope that we go back up there and be decent, as far as the things we did over the offseason and the small rule changes here and there. So much is going to be very similar to what we did in 2020. You want to hope that the results can be as rewarding.”

Considering your history at Michigan, you’re probably the best person to ask this question – what does it take to be successful at Michigan?

“A fast car is the biggest key. Our organization has run really well at Michigan. The Roush Yates folks from the engine side and Doug Yates, in particular, love going to Michigan. Ford, from a manufacturer’s side, loves having the manufacturers’ trophy sitting in its facility. So there is a lot of motivation going into Michigan. For us, being at a racetrack we have run well at and won at, the expectations are in the same category. We want to get to victory lane.”

Notes of Interest

● Cole Custer and the No. 41 Feeding America®/Wow Wow Classic Waffles Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) head to the penultimate race of the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series regular season when they hit the 2-mile oval at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn for Sunday’s FireKeepers Casino 400.

● Sunday’s 400-mile race will be Custer’s 64th Cup Series start and third at Michigan. A year ago, during his Cup Series Rookie of the Year season, Custer posted results of 34th and 25th in the Saturday-Sunday doubleheader on the 2-mile oval in the Irish Hills.

● In three Xfinity Series appearances at Michigan from 2017 through 2019, all in the No. 00 SHR Ford, Custer never finished outside the top-12 or qualified worse than seventh. His best outing was a third-place finish from the fourth starting position in 2018. He finished 10th from seventh on the grid in 2017, and finished 12th from sixth on the grid in 2019.

● After getting caught up in one of the late-race, multicar accidents last weekend on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course that took him out of the top-10 and relegated him to a 25th-place finish, Custer arrives at the Brickyard 28th in the driver standings.

● With Hunger Action Month set to kick off Sept. 1, SHR, its partner Wow Wow Classic Waffles, and Feeding America®, the largest hunger relief organization in the United States with a network of 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs, are asking fans to begin thinking about their answer to a simple question: How will you choose to end hunger? Hunger Action Month is an annual campaign dedicated to driving awareness and inspiring action to help end hunger in America, both on a national scale and on the ground in local communities. It’s a time when the Feeding America network of food banks and the public come together to raise awareness and inspire action to help people facing impossible choices due to hunger. Fans are encouraged to visit the Hunger Action Month page via the Feeding America website to learn how they can take action through sharing, volunteering, pledging to advocate, fundraising and making a donation. Each $1 donated helps provide at least 10 meals secured by Feeding America on behalf of local member food banks. Custer and the No. 41 SHR Ford team have accumulated nearly 100 volunteer hours to date, working with Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina in packing bags and helping with drop-off events at Charlotte-area schools.

● Fans can do their part by texting HUNGER to 50555 to make a $5 donation to Feeding America, by visiting the Feeding America donation page on Facebook, or the donation page via the Feeding America website. Each $1 donated helps provide at least 10 meals secured by Feeding America® on behalf of local member food banks.

Cole Custer, Driver of the No. 41 Feeding America®/Wow Wow Classic Waffles Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing

You looked like you were headed to a solid top-10 finish on the road course at Indy last weekend, and then it seemed like another case of bad luck ruining a good effort by you and the team. Your thoughts?

“I feel like we’re executing really well during races. It’s at the end where we get caught up in other peoples’ chaos and mess, or something happens that completely turns the race upside down for us. There really isn’t one thing you can point to in terms of what we need to do differently. Look at Indy last week, where we were so strong and it really felt like we had a chance to come out with a good finish. Then you get so many cautions and red flags at the end.”

Would last year’s doubleheader weekend at Michigan for you and the team be considered one of those weekends when the result doesn’t reflect that actual performance level of the team?

“I think we learned a lot last year at Michigan. We certainly improved between the first and second races of the doubleheader, so I’d like to think we’ll have a good day, but as we get down to these final races in the regular season, guys are all fighting for those last spots in the playoffs and things can get crazy pretty quickly.”

Off the track, it seems you and your team, along with SHR partner Wow Wow Classic Waffles, have been working hard to support the initiatives of the Feeding America network. Talk about that.

“We’ve been able to do some really cool things through our partnership with Wow Wow Classic Waffles and Feeding America. It’s been eye-opening to see how many in our area need help and we’ve been able to provide meals for many families through the work we’ve done, but we need help. There are so many ways to help and it doesn’t take much to make a difference for the many families out there who are in need.”

Driver Quotes

“I wish Michael (Annett) the best as he continues his recovery from surgery, and I’ll do everything I can to get a good finish for him, Pilot Flying J, Trucking Moves America Forward and everyone on this No. 1 team. Michigan is a place I’ve never raced at before, and I am anxious to see it in person. It’s wide and has many grooves, so it ought to be exciting.” – Josh Berry

“Michigan will be interesting this weekend for sure since we haven’t been there since 2019. It’s such a fun track to race on and I’m really looking forward to seeing what we can do on Saturday with our BRANDT Professional Agriculture Chevrolet. Even though Indy didn’t end the way we wanted last week, we have been consistently bringing cars capable of winning to the track each and every week, and I feel extremely confident that will be the case again come race day.” – Justin Allgaier

“I can’t wait to get to Michigan and hopefully have a good run to put this bad luck behind us. This team has been bringing fast cars to the track and Taylor (Moyer, crew chief) and the rest of the team deserve a good run. It’s my first time there and we will be starting around mid pack, so it’s going to take some patience to be there at the end.” – Sam Mayer

“We ran really well at Michigan when we were there in 2019. We qualified fourth and finished second in that race, so that helps the confidence going into this weekend. We have been putting together strong runs lately, so hopefully we can keep that up this weekend and maybe punch our ticket into the playoffs.” – Noah Gragson

Love’s Travel Stops Partner Ready to Power McDowell to New Best at Track

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (August 18, 2021) – Love’s Travel Stops partner, Martin Transportation Systems (MTS), will carry the primary colors on the No. 34 Ford Mustang at the Michigan International Speedway this weekend.

Martin Transportation Systems, is a family owned and operated transportation and logistics company with a fleet of over 1,100 trucks and employs over 2,500 drivers and support staff. Michael McDowell is ready to make headlines with MTS by getting his first top-10 at the fast, banked two-mile oval located just west of Detroit. McDowell has 14 previous starts at the track with a best finish of 22nd. But, with his success this past season, he knows Sunday is an opportunity for a best result.

“Historically, we’ve struggled at Michigan, but I’m more optimistic now than ever before going into Sunday,” said McDowell. “The package, and just us improving as a race team, we can finish in the top-10 or top-15 and really get a good result. Right now, we’re looking to have that good finish. We raced well in Indy, but disappointed in not getting the result. I think Sunday, we’ll have a good MTS/Love’s Travel Stops Ford and can get the finish that we all want.”

Sunday’s race will be televised live on NBCSN at 3:00 p.m. ET.

High School Students Test Drive Automotive Technician Training at NASCAR Technical Institute

Ignite program gives students a jumpstart training for exciting, high-demand careers in the transportation industry

MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Universal Technical Institute’s Mooresville, N.C. campus, NASCAR Technical Institute (NASCAR Tech), is celebrating another successful year of the Ignite program, a free, three-week introduction to automotive technician training for rising high school seniors in the Greater Charlotte, N.C.-area. Five local students had the opportunity to earn credits toward a UTI program through intensive, hands-on training, while also learning about high-demand careers in the transportation industry.

“With so much demand for skilled technicians nationwide, it’s been exciting to see the Ignite program continue to serve our local students over the last few years,” said Jennifer Bergeron, campus president at NASCAR Technical Institute. “There’s never been a better time to work in transportation and the skilled trades; the need is abundant, and there are many opportunities. Through Ignite, students earn real-world, on-the-job experience while having doors opened to careers they may never have considered. We look forward to continuing the program at full capacity in summer 2022.” Hiring the best online test takers would be a key to success and opening a career world without extra burden on students’ shoulders.

Since program inception, NASCAR Tech has hosted more than 50 students. UTI launched Ignite nationwide in summer 2018 following a successful pilot program at campuses in Avondale (Phoenix), Ariz.; Houston, Texas; and Orlando, Fla. Participation has steadily increased nationwide from 57 students in its inaugural year to 511 students in 2019. Hundreds of high school juniors nationwide have now received state-of-the-industry STEM training at no cost through Ignite – and 60% of those students have enrolled to come back and attend UTI after they graduate high school.

NASCAR Tech graduate Dallas Hoover was part of the campus’ inaugural Ignite class. He said the course structure helped him understand what would be expected of him as a NASCAR Tech student, and what training to become an automotive technician would be like. He made the decision to attend NASCAR Tech after high school because of his Ignite experience, and he’s now thrilled to be working in the industry as a technician at a dealership near his hometown.

“I get to do what I like every day. I like working on the cars that come into our dealership,” said Hoover. “I definitely would tell high school students to take the Ignite program if they’re interested in cars. Ignite gives you a feel for the industry and the careers available. It’s free and you have to take those opportunities when they come your way.”

Ignite participants learn automotive basics as they complete courses, which provide an introduction to some of the programs completed by full-time UTI students. The Ignite curriculum allows students to explore career opportunities in the transportation field, receive hands-on training on today’s state-of-the-industry technologies and learn from UTI graduates and local employers about the career opportunities that may be available to trained technicians. Participants who complete the Ignite program are eligible to receive credit toward future UTI courses so that they can complete a UTI education and begin a career in the transportation sector more quickly.

The automotive industry needs highly trained professionals. According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projections, the transportation industry will have to fill more than 61,000 service technician and mechanic job openings annually on average through 2029, including openings due to net employment changes and net replacements.

Kaulig Racing Weekly Advance | Michigan International Speedway

“I’ve always ran well at Michigan. I got a pole in the trucks there, so hopefully we can get back to where we need to be this weekend to get ready for the playoffs. The track is unique, because it’s really wide and really fast. I’m looking forward to a good weekend with Nutrien Ag Solutions back on the car.”
– Jeb Burton, No. 10 Nutrien Ag Solutions Chevrolet

“We’ve really been hitting our stride lately on the No. 11 team. We’ve had speed at every track lately, and that excites me going to Michigan this week. We didn’t race there with NASCAR last year, but what I’ve felt on the simulator leading up to this race makes me confident with what our team has for this weekend.”
– Justin Haley, No. 11 LeafFilter Gutter Protection Chevrolet

“Michigan is a very tricky race track with very high speeds. You’re always kind of right on the edge of having grip and no grip, depending on the temperature. It’s very temperature sensitive. Turns one and two are completely different than three and four, so it’s a tough track to get the setup right on. It’s hard to pass because of how high speed it is. I haven’t been there in three years, but I feel like with everything we’re learning each weekend we will have a really good No. 16 Ramco Chevy there. It’s all about going out there and hitting the strategy right, because track position is really important. I can’t wait to get there with all the momentum we have and get ready for the last handful of races before the playoffs start.”
– AJ Allmendinger, No. 16 Ramco Chevrolet

PLANO, Texas (August 18, 2021) – It’s a busy weekend for motorsports as the NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series and ARCA Menards Series compete just outside the Motor City at Michigan International Speedway and the Truck Series kicks off their Playoff run just outside of St. Louis at World Wide Technology Raceway. The national ARCA Menards Series complete a busy weekend with an additional race at Illinois State Fairgrounds on Sunday, while the ARCA West teams are back on track at Irwindale Speedway.

NASCAR National Series – NCS| NXS| NCWTS

Hamlin plans to bounce back… After getting spun from the race lead in Indianapolis, Denny Hamlin is focused on getting the points lead back with two races remaining in the regular season. Hamlin leads Toyota with two wins at Michigan International Speedway. He scored Toyota’s second win at the track in 2010 and added another victory the following season.

Truex looking for first Michigan win… Ever since joining Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) in 2019, Martin Truex Jr. has been a contender at Michigan International Speedway. Despite still looking for his first win at the track, Truex has scored top-five finishes in all four Michigan events he has competed in for JGR.

Wallace back in Xfinity Series… For the first time since 2017, Bubba Wallace will be back behind the wheel of a NASCAR Xfinity Series car, as he wheels the No. 61 Supra for Hattori Racing Enterprises. He has two Xfinity Series starts at Michigan, with a best finish of ninth in 2016.

Hemric strong at Michigan… Playoff contender Daniel Hemric will continue to look for that first win at Michigan International Speedway. One of his nine runner-up finishes occurred in 2018 at Michigan. The Kannapolis, North Carolina-native also holds a third-place result in the Truck Series at the track in 2016.

Hill on Hot Streak… For the first time in his NASCAR career, Austin Hill is on a two-race winning streak after going to victory lane in the last two events – on the dirt in Knoxville and at New York’s Watkins Glen International. Hill has never won at Gateway but finished third there one season ago.

Playoffs begin for the Trucks… Toyota leads all manufacturers with six qualified drivers in the NASCAR Truck Series Playoffs, which begin this Friday at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway. John Hunter Nemechek leads all drivers with 49 Playoff points and comes in as the number one seed. Hill, Ben Rhodes, Matt Crafton, rookie Chandler Smith and Stewart Friesen are also in the running for the title this season.

NASCAR Regional Series – ARCA| ARCA West

ARCA Championship battle continues… Corey Heim and Ty Gibbs continue their battle for the ARCA Menards Series championship this weekend with two events. Heim took the last race at Watkins Glen for his fifth victory of the season, but Gibbs still holds the upper hand by two points on the strength of his seven wins this season.

ARCA West back on track… Not to be outdone, the ARCA West championship battle is also tight as the series hits the midway point of the season at Irwindale Speedway. Last season’s champion, 16-year-old Jesse Love, holds a slim two-point advantage over his Bill McAnally Racing teammate Cole Moore heading into this weekend’s event.
