Crawford class of field at Imola, Dominates Euroformula Open with two victories

IMOLA, Italy (25 July 2021) – Young Jak Crawford demonstrated why he is considered America’s top hopeful for Formula 1, dominating a Euroformula Open weekend at Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari. The 16-year-old Texan racer won two of the three weekend races on the fast circuit, in addition to a close second, the pole position and recording the fastest race lap in all three events.

“It was a very good weekend, for sure,” said the Red Bull Junior Team driver of Team Motopark’s No. 52 Dallara F320-Spiess VW. “I feel good; I feel confident. I’m feeling very good with the car, and I’m feeling good with my driving, as well.”

Crawford also had two firsts and a second at Paul Ricard, giving him four victories and two seconds this season. He placed fourth and was top rookie in the most recent event at Hungaroring in Budapest, and placed seventh in his first race at Portimao, Portugal, on his 16th birthday. Sunday’s weekend moves Crawford into third in the standings despite missing five races.

“I’m still hoping to make a run for the championship, and the goal is to keep gaining every race,” he said. “We outscored the championship leader by a lot this weekend.”

Crawford quickly took to the 3.05-mile circuit, where he won a Formula 4 event last November. Fifth in opening practice, he improved by 1.5-seconds to run second in the second session. He then went nearly two seconds faster in qualifying, capturing the pole with a lap of 1:34.886-seconds in a red-flag shortened session, putting 0.523-seconds on the second-place qualifier.

“We never put on new tires for the practice, so we were at a disadvantage at not knowing what it would be like going into the qualifying,” he said. “We did a race run in the second practice on very old tires, and we were still quite quick. We knew we had the pace, but we were waiting until qualifying to show everything.”

The Red Bull Junior driver quickly demonstrated that advantage in the opening race at sunset on Saturday. Pulling away at the start, he built up a nine-second lead, only to have a safety car erase that advantage. Undeterred, he pulled away at the restart and went on to win by nine seconds.

“My personal highlight of the weekend was probably race one,” Crawford said. “I was really quick and put out a nine-second gap. Then after the safety car, I put out another nine-second gap. Race one and qualifying were my standout sessions, way ahead of the field for sure.”

With the top six finishers from that race inverted for Sunday morning’s second race, Crawford got out in sixth at lights-out. He passed point leader Cameron Das on lap two, got around Louis Foster for fourth on lap three, and then put two wheels in the grass at the beginning of the following lap to take third.

Crawford then needed two laps to capture second, and he quickly caught up to the race leader. Crawford followed his F3 teammate Roman Stanek the remainder of the 19-lap event, making several attempts on the final circuit before coming up 0.125-seconds short.

“It was a good battle, for sure, but it was very difficult to overtake, which is why I ended up not passing him,” he said. “Roman drove a very good race. He was a little bit better off the last corner, as I was struggling with the dirty air, so he was able to keep the gap. We definitely had the pace and almost got the win, but I just wanted to keep it safe on the last lap to avoid any incidents.”

Running the fastest lap of the race put Crawford on the pole for Sunday afternoon’s final race. He took the lead at the start, closely followed by Stanek. A multi-car incident brought out a safety car on lap 3. Stanek regained the lead prior to crossing start/finish at the restart. With Stanek forced to return the position, Crawford then led the rest of the way, winning by 4.222-seconds.

“It was quite a difficult race,” Crawford admitted. “I took the lead but then there was a safety car. There was some oil dropped down in the last two corners, and when I went for the restart I slipped on the oil in the corner. That allowed Roman to get past me, but he overtook me before the finish line so he had to give the position back to avoid getting a penalty.

“After that, once I got back out in front, I pulled away and showed strong pace. I didn’t get to show my full pace in the second race.”

The next Euroformula Open event is at Austria’s Red Bull Ring on Sept. 10-12. This weekend, Crawford returns to Budapest for an FIA F3 race at Hungaroring, three weeks after competing there in Euroformula

IndyCar veteran Sage Karam to pilot the #31 for Jordan Anderson Racing at IMS Road Course

STATESVILLE, N.C. (July 26, 2021) – Jordan Anderson Racing (JAR) has announced that 26-year-old Sage Karam will make his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut driving the No.31 Chevrolet Camaro SS in the Pennzoil 150 at the Brickyard on August 14.

A veteran of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Nazareth, Pa. native has 24 NTT IndyCar Series starts under his belt. Karam has netted two top-ten finishes in eight starts at the Indianapolis 500 while recording a podium finish at Iowa Speedway in 2015.

The 2013 Indy Lights champion has a diverse racing background, having competed in the NTT IndyCar Series since 2014. Karam spent two seasons as a factory Lexus driver in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in 2016 and 2017 and earned a victory in the American Rallycross Championship at Mid-Ohio in 2019.

“It has always been a dream of mine to be able to compete at this level with some of the world’s best stock car drivers,” said Karam.

“My goal is to learn as much as possible and soak in this experience. It’s a welcomed challenge for me, and I’m looking forward to building strong relationships with the talented people of Jordan Anderson Racing.”

In the midst of an expectation exceeding debut season, JAR has secured four top-tens throughout the campaign with a driver lineup consisting of Tyler Reddick, Kaz Grala, Josh Berry and owner/driver Jordan Anderson.

“Our entire team is incredibly proud to add Sage Karam to our list of talented drivers that have driven the 31 Chevrolet this year,” stated JAR President Jordan Anderson.

“With Sage’s extensive experience in road racing and open-wheel racing, along with finishing 7th in this year’s Indianapolis 500, we knew that the road course at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway would be a special place for him to make his NASCAR debut with support from Montage Mountain Resorts and so many other great partners. To bridge the gap between two different fields of racing is a challenge that I’m confident Sage will be able to master. We’re blessed to have some amazing drivers and people that continue to help our organization grow, and this opportunity is another pivotal part of our long-term goal.”

Partnering with Karam in his trip to the Brickyard is Montage Mountain Resorts, one of Pennsylvania’s largest all-ages outdoor destinations. Located in Scranton, Pa., the resort is a year-round facility boasting the steepest vertical ski drop in the state.

“As an independent, privately-owned resort, Montage Mountain has a strong connection with our local community and a commitment to quality and experience that only independence brings. Sage represents everything we strive to be,” said Charlie Jefferson, managing partner of Montage Mountain Resorts, LP.

“We can’t think of a better way to introduce Montage Mountain to a larger audience than by partnering with him. We’re thrilled for Sage to represent our brand at the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway and bring this exciting partnership to life.”

The resort operates 27 trails, seven ski lifts, 15 lanes of tubing, and a full-service lodge during the winter. However, in the summer months, Montage Mountain transitions to a water park, offering rides, slides, and outdoor activities, including a regulation-sized beach volleyball court, horseshoe pits, mini-golf, and batting cage.

“We have found an incredible sponsor in Montage Mountain Resorts and are thrilled to sport this livery on the Xfinity stage. It’s special to partner with a company that’s so integral to the state of Pa., and I’m thrilled to try and bring the No. 31 Montage Mountain Resorts machine to the front of the field,” said Karam.

Joining Montage Mountain Resorts on board the No.31 for the Pennzoil 150 at the Brickyard is Pro Resources Staffing Services. Locally owned and operated, Pro Resources is a professional, clerical and light industrial employment agency located just 45 miles from Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Coverage of the race begins at 3:30 PM on Saturday, August 14. The event will air on the Performance Racing Network, IMS Radio and NBCSN.

Lynn Beats the Heat in Portland for Second Trans Am West Coast Victory

Portland heatwave collects several drivers in 100-mile Trans Am sprint, Local favorite Cindi Lux first in class for SGT

PORTLAND, OREG. (24 JULY 2021)- Sunday at Portland International Raceway was all about survival for the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli West Coast Championship as drivers endured nearly 150 degree temperatures from the cockpits of their TA2® machines. The heat wave moving through the Pacific Northwest also caused changing track conditions with several segments of the 1.967-mile circuit polling with traction-robbing oil.

Battling the heat and a slippery circuit, Tim Lynn charged from an eighth-place start to claim his second victory of the season. Lynn’s No. 17 Roof Options Ford Mustang crossed the line in second behind Jeff Holden, but was later promoted to first after Holden’s shocks were found to be noncompliant in post-race tech, which disqualified his race result.

“It was a hot and difficult race,” Lynn said. “We missed The Ridge. To come back and take the win was special for the team.”

The 100-mile sprint saw three different leaders, with Ken Sutherland (No. 68 Cascade Sotheby’s Chevrolet Camaro) taking the lead from pole-starter Brad McAllister (No. 28 www.PortlandImplantDentisry.com Ford Mustang) off the start. McAllister repaid the favor on the next circuit and held the point until a full course yellow brought out by Carl Rydquist on Lap 9 grouped the cars back up.

Rydquist missed qualifying on Saturday due to a clutch failure earlier that day in practice. The TA2® West Coast championship leader started from the last row and pierced into the top 10 before his car stalled in Turn 6, requiring a tow.

On the restart, Holden got the jump on McAllister. In a wheel-to-wheel dogfight, Holden contested from the outside on the back straight, moving into first and bringing Sutherland up with him. Trying to regain his position, McAllister spun off track through the Carousel. The Portland native continued under his own power, but lost out on his podium chance before retiring later in the race with mechanical issues.

While Holden pulled away from the pack, the battle for the last podium positions were just as heated as the weather, leaving the top three undecided until after the checkered flag dropped.

Lynn charged through the field and started to make his podium bid on Lap 31. The WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca winner moved into third after winning a lap-long contest with Troy Lindstrom’s No. 63 RaceCars4Rent Ford Mustang.

With 10 laps left, Sutherland shunted off course and stayed there for the remainder of the race, gifting Lynn his third podium finish of the season.

Starting sixth in the No. 67 Cascade Sothbey’s Chevrolet Camaro, Dave Kunick also had his share of action campaigning for his first podium finish of the season. After a battle against Matthew Butson ended with Buston losing brakes in the final laps, Kunick was in fourth when he inherited third from Darrell Anderson. On the final lap, Anderson ran out of gas before crossing the finish line. Kunick was issued a time penalty post-race for jumping the start, but with Anderson finishing a lap down, Kunick was able to keep his promoted second-place result.

“The track was incredibly oily and there was a lot of action from start to finish,” said Kunick. “The team did great with the set up, building a car that would outlast these grueling conditions.”

After making contact with the Turn 12 tire barrier in practice, Anderson missed qualifying as his team completely rebuilt his suspension and bodywork overnight. Starting from 15th, the No. 15 Park Place Constructors Chevrolet Camaro pilot charged to third by Lap 42 and built a sizeable gap from Kunick until running out of gas on the final lap.

Anderson was fourth at the end of the race but was later classified third following technical inspections.
“We got lucky today,” said Anderson. “The team put in a lot of hard work overnight to make sure I made the race. I was devastated when we ran out of gas on the last lap. I didn’t’ know we were in third when it happened, which made it all the more painful. To come away with a podium result after the weekend we had was a true reward.”

Mitch Marvosh recovered from a 12th-place start to finish the race in fourth. His smooth passes in the final laps of the race in the No. 29 Wolf Entertainment Ford Mustang earned Marvosh the ChillOut Move of the Race. Michele Abbate wrangled gremlins most of the weekend but was able to wheel her No. Lucas Oil Products Chevrolet Camaro to a fifth-place finish.

Local fan favorite Cindi Lux out drove John Schweitzer (No. 00 Superior Builders Inc Ford Fusion), crossing the stripe in the No. 5 Lux Performance/Black Rock Coffee Dodge Viper first in class (sixth overall) nearly 18-seconds ahead of Schweitzer.

“Today’s race had a lot of action going on all over the place, possibly due to the heat,” said Lux. “Portland is an older track and it gets greasier with higher temps. My car ran great for the first third of the race, but then the differential got hot, and about 10 laps later it was totally blow up and fried. It was a handful, but we nursed it all the home for the win.“

The Trans Am West Coast drivers will take a summer break before returning for their penultimate round at Utah Motorsports Campus October 9-10.

The next time the National TA2® drivers take the green will be on the streets of Nashville for the inaugural Music City Grand Prix August 6-9. For more information visit www.gotransam.com

CHEVROLET RACING IN NATIONAL HOT ROD ASSOCIATION: SONOMA – SONOMA NATIONALS POST-RACE RECAP & QUOTES

CHEVROLET RACING IN NATIONAL HOT ROD ASSOCIATION
SONOMA NHRA NATIONALS
SONOMA RACEWAY IN SOMONA, CALIFORNIA
JULY 25, 2021

Chevrolet adds two victories to season total

• Robert Hight drives to third win in a row at Sonoma
• Aaron Stanfield earns second Pro Stock victory of season
• Brittany Force records fourth Top Fuel No. 1 qualifier

SONOMA, Calif. (July 25, 2021) – “Consistency,” predicted Robert Hight, would be the determining factor in the Funny Car competition of the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Sonoma Nationals.

“Told you,” Hight said after driving the Auto Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS to passes of 3.938, 3.938, 3.943 and finally 3.971 seconds to win for the third successive time and fourth overall at Sonoma Raceway. The event was not held in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Equally consistent in the Janac Brothers Chevrolet Camaro SS, Aaron Stanfield earned his second Pro Stock Wally of the season and third of his emerging career.

Hight got past fellow NHRA Funny Car champions J.R Todd, Ron Capps and Matt Hagan to claim his 53rd career victory, which broke a tie with Joe Amato for 12th on the all-time NHRA list, in his 84th final round. He was confident heading into his 38th meeting with Hagan, who won a week earlier at Denver.

“Just the way this Auto Club Chevy has been running all day long,” said Hight, who picked up his second Wally of the young season. “(Crew chiefs) Jimmy (Prock) and Chris (Cunningham) have this thing running on a string. We’ve got good luck here. We had lane choice every round, so I just have a lot of confidence in my team.”

Hight’s victory was the 145th for Chevrolet in Funny Car competition.
Brittany Force recorded her fourth No. 1 qualifier in nine races this season – second in a row — and 24th of her career with a run of 3.694 seconds in the Flav-R-Pac Chevrolet dragster. She posted the top speed of race day at 330.720 mph in the first round of eliminations but hazed the tires in the second round and was sent to the sideline.

John Force qualified fifth in the PEAK/BlueDEF Platinum Camaro SS and entered race day second in the Funny Car standings. The 16-time Funny Car champion lost in the first round.

Stanfield, the 2020 Constant Aviation Factory Stock Showdown champion in the Janac Brothers Chevrolet COPO Camaro, defeated Dallas Glenn in the RAD Torque Systems Camaro SS to win for the third time in four final rounds through 36 career races.

“It was a tough (list) of competitors to go through,” said Stanfield, 25. “My guys did a great job. They all gave me a great race car. I drove halfway decent today and it all came together and we’re pretty pumped.”

Stanfield dispatched Pro Stock points leader Greg Anderson in one semifinal. Anderson, driving the HendrickCars.com Camaro SS, claimed his seventh No. 1 qualifier honor for the seventh time in eight races this season and 113th in his career (third all time to Warren Johnson and John Force). Anderson is aiming to tie Johnson’s 97 career wins for most in the category and second to Force’s NHRA-record 153.

Justin Lamb was runner-up in Stock Eliminator in his Chevrolet COPO Camaro.

The Western Swing wraps up July 30-August 1 with the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by ProtestTheHarvest.com at Auto Club Raceway in Ponoma, California. FOX will telecast eliminations live at 4 p.m. ET August 1.

An interview with Funny Car winner ROBERT HIGHT, JOHN FORCE RACING, AUTO CLUB OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 4 qualifier):

YOU SAID BEFORE THE FINAL THAT YOU WERE GOING TO STOP MATT HAGAN. WHY WERE YOU SO SURE?
“Just the way this Auto Club Chevy has been running all day long. Jimmy (Prock) and Chris (Cunningham) have this thing running on a string. We’ve got good luck here. We had lane choice every round, so I just have a lot of confidence in my team. I have to have confidence in myself. It’s been an unbelievable weekend and we’re headed to Auto Club Raceway now.”

YOU HAD TO GO THROUGH A LOT OF BIG NAMES TO GET HERE.
“It’s pretty tough out here. Even Steven Densham, his dad, Gary Densham, is a cagy old veteran and you’ve got to be on your game But Jimmy Prock, Chris Cunningham, they really brought their A game. I think we learned some things this weekend, and maybe this Auto Club Chevy is back.”

DO YOU THINK IT BRINGS OUT THE BEST IN YOUR TEAM WHEN YOU GO AGAINST CHAMPION AFTER CHAMPION THROUGHOUT THE DAY?
“It definitely does. You’ve got to rise to the occasion and these guys are all great. You look at the top eight in Funny Car, any one of these guys can win a championship and most of them are champions. It’s a tough class and a lot of fun when you can get here and stand on the stage at the end of the day. This is three in a row here at my home racetrack. When I first started race here, I couldn’t do anything, couldn’t get it done. We’d qualify well but couldn’t seal the deal on Sunday. The last three, boy, we have dominated and it’s a lot of fun.”

TELL ME ABOUT THE FIRST TIME YOU VISITED THIS RACETRACK BEFORE YOU WERE DRIVING A RACE CAR.
“1988, the first national event ever here, that’s when I fell in love with this sport. I just knew that this was what I wanted to do. Never thought I’d get to drive one of these things, but when I was a kid I wanted to be a mechanic and learn about these cars. A guy named Roger Primm from Reno, Nevada, close to where I used to live, gave me the opportunity and then John Force. I’ve been with John now for 26 years and to think that I came here to watch a race and now I get to drive one of these things and win. Very lucky guy. You look at what we had to do today. There are no easy rounds. Funny Car is a very tough class. Steven Densham first round, his dad is actually who I took over driving for. A great racer for a lot of years. So, you’ve got to go up there with you’re a game and get the job done. Then after that you race three world champions in a row. It’s fun. They bring out the best in us. I really think that Jimmy Prock and Chris Cunningham stumbled on to some things this weekend. We hadn’t had a lot of consistency this year. We won a race and been in some finals, but no consistency. This is our best weekend by far and it’s happening at the right time. Pretty soon we’re going to have the U.S. Nationals – the biggest race of the year – and the Countdown. This is where you really want to start shining and getting your act together. Heading to Auto Club Raceway next weekend, that’s our home track – where John Force Racing’s home is and my sponsor the Automobile Club of Southern California – and it’s going to be a little different. We don’t normally race there in the summertime; we race there at the beginning of the year in February and end the season in November. Hopefully, we’re going there with a little momentum and keep this rolling.”

GIVEN YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THIS TRACK, DID YOU PUT MORE PRESSURE ON YOURSELF OR DID YOU LOOK AT THIS AS AN OPPORTUNITY?
“Definitely an opportunity. Once you win a race at a certain facility, win the U.S. Nationals, win a championship, you know you can do it. So now you have confidence. The first few years I came here, we would qualify well but never raced well. I couldn’t hardly win a round at this place. I think I’ve won here four times, but three in a row that’s pretty impressive.”

WHERE WOULD YOU RANK THIS AMONG YOUR WINS?
“It’s right up there. It’s at what I call my home track and we’re fighting to get up in the points. This was a big day in points for us. Bob Tasca the points leader went out early. My boss, right behind Tasca, went out. We beat J.R. Todd. Everybody that we beat from second round on was ahead of me in points. So, this was a big points day for the Auto Club team and that’s exactly what we have to keep doing. We want to go into this Countdown No. 1, and I don’t see that as a problem if we race and do the things we know how to do.”

IS IT NICE TO PEAK AT THE RIGHT TIME?
“It is. It’s what you have to do. I’ve had years where we started out on fire, win a lot of races and just go flat. And I’ve had years where we can’t do anything early in the year and get it together when it really counts like 2009, my first championship. I will say, 2019, the last championship I won, we were good from start to finish. It’s satisfying. Really, you want to be good every race and we’ve had some flashes of brilliance, but we’ve also had some inconsistency. Hopefully we’re on the right track.”

HOW COOL IS IT TO PASS A LEGEND LIKE JOE AMATO ON THE ALL-TIME WINS LIST? “I can’t even believe that’s possible because Joe Amato for the longest time was the winningest Top Fuel driver. Race wins, round wins. He’s since been passed by Larry Dixon and Tony Schumacher but watching him all those years he just dominated Top Fuel. And to say I have more wins than he does, that’s almost not even believable.”

An interview with Pro Stock winner AARON STANFIELD, ELITE MOTORSPORTS, JANAC BROTHERS CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 5 qualifier):

WHAT RUN TO DO YOU THINK SET YOU UP FOR THIS PERFORMANCE IN THE FINAL?

“That’s tough to say; every run is important. The guys did a great job with the hot rod today. I always say everything has to come together to win and today it came together. It’s a good day.”

YOU WENT THROUGH A MURDER’S ROW TODAY.
“It was a tough (list) of competitors to go through. My guys did a great job. They all gave me a great race car. I drove halfway decent today and it all came together and we’re pretty pumped.”

YOU GET PAST GREG ANDERSON, TAKE A BREATH AND HAVE TO RACE ANOTHER ONE OF THE KB GUYS.

“The KB cars keep coming and so do the Elite cars. There’s a bunch of great drivers out here right now and a bunch of new blood. We’re all very hungry to get out here and win. It’s fun to come out and compete.”

IS THERE ANOTHER CLASS YOU WANT TO TRY?

“For now, I’d like to win a championship in Pro Stock. You never know; I wouldn’t mind going 300 mph once or twice. But Pro Stock is my home for right now and it’s where I plan on staying.”

CHEVROLET FROM THE COCKPIT

TOP FUEL:

BRITTANY FORCE, JOHN FORCE RACING, MONSTER ENERGY/ FLAV-R-PAC CHEVROLET DRAGSTER (No. 1 qualifier, fell in second round): “All weekend qualifying, three phenomenal runs so we’re very happy with. Three good runs, especially these runs earlier in the day, really got us prepared for race day.”

FUNNY CAR:

JOHN FORCE, JOHN FORCE RACING, PEAK/BLUEDEF PLATINUM CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 5 qualifier, fell in first round): “Wasn’t our weekend over at the PEAK Chevy. It was a good weekend for John Force Racing, though. Brittany with the Flav-R-Pac and Monster Energy getting another No. 1 qualifier and Robert with the Auto Club picking up the win. We are all up there in points, all in the top five. That’s a good spot to be and now we get to chase another win at home.”

Qualified: Ninth

Finish: First Running (75 | 75 laps completed)

Quick Race Recap: Bluffton, S.C.-native Gus Dean rallied from a ninth-place starting position in Saturday night’s Carolina Pro Late Model Series (CPLMS) race at Dillon (S.C.) Motor Speedway to capture his third consecutive victory in the series in a thrilling green-white-checkered last-lap pass.

Dean steadily worked through the field to find himself in the runner-up spot when the caution waved at Lap 73. Despite a tight-handling No. 21D DLP Motorsports | MASHONIT Apparel Chevrolet pulled a veteran move on Josh Lowder coming to the checkered flag utilizing the bottom lane to sneak ahead of Lowder by 0.020-seconds at the finish line.

Entering Dillon, Dean has won in his two previous CPLMS events at Florence (S.C.) Motor Speedway in May and earlier this month at Franklin County (Va.) Speedway.

Gus Dean Quote: “Man, what a blast. First, thank you to Josh (Lowder) for racing me clean on the last lap. I sincerely appreciate that and respect him as a competitor. We didn’t have the fastest DLP Motorsports Chevrolet Saturday night, but we were methodical with the car and definitely went into tire-saving mode the later we got into the race.

“I knew on the green-white-checkered, I had one lap to get it done and I think Josh overdrove the last corner which left the bottom lane open, and our car stuck and we were able to battle hard to get to the start-finish line first.

“I can’t thank “Buggy” (team owner David Pletcher) enough for the great cars he brings to the track along with these DLP Motorsports guys. My family, my friends, my fiancé Briar and everyone that continues to support me. I’m having a blast right now.”

Next Up: Orange County (N.C.) Speedway on Sat., Aug. 28, 2021, in the Carolina Pro Late Model Series.

McAllister Secures Pole Position in Trans Am West Coast Qualifying at Portland

Oregon local Cindi Lux to start on pole in SGT class

Driving the brand new No. 24 www.PortlandImplantDentisry.com Ford Mustang , McAllister climbed to the top of the standings immediately, beating his best time each circuit until he stuck with the 1:16.076-second flyer that put him on pole. Pulling into the pits after just four laps, McAllister held Ken Sutherland to a second-place start for Sunday’s 100-mile race by 0.052 -seconds.

PORTLAND, OREG. (24 JULY 2021)- Portland native Brad McAllister reeled off a series of fast laps early during the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli West Coast qualifying at Portland International Raceway on Saturday, claiming his first Motul Pole Award of the season.

“It couldn’t feel better to win pole at my home track,” McAllister said. “We worked really hard on this project. It’s great to finally have the car complete and running fast times, especially here at Portland in front of my family and my sponsors.

“Tomorrow is going to be a battle until the very last lap, so getting pole doesn’t mean anything but points, it’s that last lap that counts,” continued McAllister. “It’s critical to have tires left at the end and we went out there just enough to set the fastest lap so we could save our Pirelli tires for the race.”

It took Sutherland nine laps to do what McAllister did in four. After setting the second-fastest lap, the Portland native also parked his No. 68 Cascade Sotheby’s Chevrolet Camaro after four laps. However, Jeff Holden stayed out on the hot 1.915-mile circuit to pop off a 1:16.49-second lap, edging out Sutherland for second.

After watching his time be topped from the pits, Sutherland went out for another five laps to set his fastest time of the day (1:16.128-seconds), reclaiming second-place to complete an all Portland-native front row.

We were just trying to get a good lap in,” said Sutherland. “It’s our first weekend in this car, I knew Brad (McAllister) was going to be fast so our strategy was just to hang it behind him. (Jeff) Holden came back and set a fast lap, and we had to go back out. I didn’t want to put more laps on our tires, and we were digging on that last push, but it was worth it, we moved up a position.”

Holden did not go back out to challenge Sutherland, and The Ridge pole-starter settled for a second-row start in the No. 11 Joe’sRacing/MidValleyTrans/M1 Chevrolet Camaro.

“It’s never good to use up too much of your tires in qualifying, so we decided not to go back out,” said Holden. “We figured we did about as good as we were going to do on the greasy track and decided to just save the fight for the race. We will just get it to the front the long way tomorrow.”

Fourth and fifth place were only decided by .011-seconds with Chris Cook in the No. 62 RaceCars4Rent Ford Mustang taking fourth (1:16.626-seconds) followed by Matthew Butson in the No. 19 Butson Racing Chevrolet Camaro (1:16.637-seconds) starting in fifth.

In the SGT class, another Portland driver took pole. Cindi Lux out drove her closest class rival (and several TA2® cars) John Schweitzer by more than 13 seconds in the No. 5 Lux Performance/Black Rock Coffee Dodge Viper to take her second SGT pole position start of the season.

“The heat comes into play with the track, that’s one of the unique things about Portland, it is such an old surface that the track will actually lose a second to a second and a half because of it holding the heat,” said Lux. “We had a time that we wanted to meet and once we met that, our strategy was just to park it. Anything after that is just abusing the tires. We got our car set up for the long run tomorrow, so it’s going to be an awesome race.”

Championship leader Carl Rydquist and Thunderhill pole starter Darrell Anderson did not make qualifying.

Anderson’s No. 15 Park Place Constructors Chevrolet Camaro suffered severe damage during practice after making contact with the tire barrier in Turn 8 during practice. With the suspension needing a full rebuild among other body damage, Anderson said, “…we will make the race but we won’t look pretty.”

Anderson will start on the back row with someone who has won twice following a last-place start. Rydquist has two consecutive come-from-behind victories (Thunderhill, The Ridge), and on Sunday the reigning West Coast XGT champion will once again contest for the checkered in the No. 47 Racecars4Rent/GroupWholesale Ford Mustang from the back row. Rydquist lost his clutch during morning practice which forced him to miss qualifying.

“We missed qualifying because my clutch started to slip in practice, it wouldn’t make qualifying so the team decided to replace it so we would be race ready tomorrow,” said Rydquist. “The good thing is though that the test sessions gave us a lot of proof in the data that shows we found the speed in the car and myself, this is my first time here. I was eager to do qualifying to surprise everyone that we got everything sorted out so quickly, but we couldn’t do that. We are going to come out and surprise everyone in the race instead.”

The Trans Am West Coast drivers will take the green on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. Pacific for 51 laps or 75 minutes. Follow Live Timing and Scoring all weekend at www.gotransam.com/livetiming
