Chandler Smith – No. 18 JBL Tundra Camping World Trucks Richmond Race Preview

Chandler Smith: Driver, No. 18 JBL® Toyota

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Overview:
Event: ToyotaCare 250, Race 6 of 22, 250 Laps – 70/70/110; 187.5 Miles
Location: Richmond (Va.) Raceway (0.75-mile D-shaped oval)
Date/Broadcast: April 17, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. ET on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR 90

Mr. Smith Goes to Richmond:

  • Chandler Smith and the No. 18 JBL team look to change a recent fun of bad luck as the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series heads to Richmond Raceway for Saturday’s ToyotaCare 250. The team has experienced disappointing results the last two races, finishing 34th at the Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway Dirt Track and 35th at Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway.
  • When the Camping World Trucks returned to Richmond for the first time since 2005 last year, Smith recorded a 12th-place finish. The result was part of a strong finish to the season for the Georgia native, recording an average finish of 7.7 across his final seven starts compared to an average finish of 25.2 across his first five starts last year.
  • Smith comes into Saturday’s race 15th in the Camping World Truck Series championship standings. He currently sits 16 points behind Austin Wayne Self for the 10th and final spot in the playoffs. In the Rookie of the Year standings, Smith sits second, 14 points behind Carson Hocevar. Both drivers have captured the Rookie of the Race Award twice.
  • The Toyota Development Driver spent his off weekend competing in the CARS Tour/Southern Super Series event April 11 at Greenville-Pickens (S.C.) Speedway for Wilson Motorsports. Smith qualified fifth, started sixth after the invert and finished fifth in the 150-lap event.
  • The talented teenager has finished inside the top five in eight of his 21 career Camping World Truck Series starts, including a career-best runner-up finish at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway in 2019.
  • Veteran crew chief Danny Stockman will call the shots for Smith and the No. 18 team this season. Stockman led the No. 51 team to four wins in his first season atop the pit box at KBM in 2020. He came to the organization with experience as a crew chief in all three national series, including a Truck Series championship with Austin Dillon in 2011 and an Xfinity Series championship with Dillon in 2013. Stockman has crew chiefed one Truck Series race at Richmond, a 12th-place result with Smith last season. In Xfinity Series action, his drivers recorded four top-five and nine top-10 finishes, including two third-place finishes with Daniel Hemric.
  • JBL, the authority in engineering superior sound, will be the primary sponsor for the No. 18 team this week. Safelite AutoGlass – the nation’s largest provider of vehicle glass repair, replacement, and recalibration services – returns to Smith’s Tundra May 1 at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City.
  • All three KBM Tundras will carry a special decal on the B post this week promoting Autism Awareness that includes the website address of NASCAR Sammy (NASCARSammy.com), an avid NASCAR fan and autism advocate. Fans can visit his site to purchase a decal and help support his mission.

Chandler Smith, Driver Q&A:

What is your outlook going into this weekend at Richmond?
“I’m really excited to get to Richmond. The trucks hadn’t been there for a few years, so when the trucks went back last year, it was a pretty big deal to be part of it all. As an organization, KBM is really strong with short tracks so to help build the short track program with going back to Richmond. Going back this year, I think we are going to better in our JBL Toyota Tundra.”

Does Richmond remind you of any short tracks that you grew up on in late models?
“Richmond kind of reminds of Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida. Other than that, it is a really unique track. It tears up the tires as a run goes on. You have to really be messing with the throttle all the time and racing the track. The characteristics are honestly like Pensacola.”

Have you discussed with your crew chief about the differences between a day and night race?
“I don’t think there is going to be much of a difference due to the cloud cover. If the sun is out, the track is going to be completely different. It’s going to be really greasy and slick. It’s going to be all about tire management. If the clouds stay around, it’s probably going to be similar to how the night race was.”

Chandler Smith Career Highlights:

  • Across 21 career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts has recorded 115 laps led, eight top-five and 10 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 14.6.
  • Posted an average finish of 7.7 across his final seven of 12 total Truck Series starts in 2020, including third-place finishes in the series finale at Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway and his first career superspeedway start at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway in October.
  • Produced three top-five and four top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 4.2 across his first four career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts in 2019. He led 55 laps and finished eighth in his Gander Trucks debut at Iowa Speedway last July and then posted top-five finishes in his final three starts, including a runner-up finish at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.
  • Has collected nine wins, 10 poles, 1761 laps led, 22 top-five and 29 top-10 finishes en route to an average finish of 5.2 across 33 career ARCA Menards Series starts. Set an ARCA Racing Series record by winning four consecutive poles to start his career and earned his first victory after leading a race-high 102 laps at Madison (Wis.) International Speedway in his fourth series start.

Chandler Smith’s No. 18 JBL Tundra:

KBM-60: The No. 18 JBL team will unload chassis number KBM-60 for Saturday’s ToyotaCare 250 at Richmond. The Tundra recorded two wins in three starts in 2020: Kyle Busch at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway in February and Brandon Jones at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa. in June. Saturday’s race will be the first start for KBM-60 this season.

KBM Notes of Interest:

  • KBM drivers produced an average finish of 18.7 in last year’s event at Richmond, the first time that the organization competed in the Camping World Truck Series at the venue. Kurt Busch picked up the team’s lone NASCAR Xfinity Series victory at the Virginia track in April of 2012.
  • KBM holds the Camping World Truck Series records for most career wins (83) and most wins in a single season (14 in 2014). With his victory at the Bristol Motor Speedway Dirt Track, Martin Truex Jr. became the 16th different driver to win a Truck Series event for KBM. In addition to collecting a series-record seven Owner’s Championships, the organization has produced two championship-winning drivers: Erik Jones (2015) and Christopher Bell (2017).
  • The No. 18, the number which was on the first Tundra that went to victory lane for KBM in 2010, has 21 career victories.

INDY GP OF ALABAMA – APRIL 17-18

LEEDS. ALABAMA
APRIL 14, 2021

RACE 1 OF 2021 NTT INDYCAR SERIES:

DETROIT (April 14, 2021) – Chevrolet teams and drivers, buoyed by strong on-track test outings and off-track preparations, enter the 2021 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season with high expectations for continued success.

Since rejoining INDYCAR manufacturer competition in 2012, Chevrolet has amassed an impressive 89 victories and 99 earned poles in 149 races on the way to securing six Engine Manufacturer Championships and seven Driver/Owner Championships. Team Penske and Ed Carpenter Racing have contributed to the achievements since 2012.

Chevrolet scored seven wins and 11 poles during the 2020 season truncated because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Eleven cars powered by Chevrolet’s 2.2-liter, twin-turbocharged, direct-injected V6 engine will seek to take the checkered flag in the opening Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama powered by AmFirst on April 18 at Barber Motorsports Park.

“As Chevrolet enters its 10th consecutive year of NTT INDYCAR SERIES engine manufacturer competition, we want to thank our partners and teams for the major accomplishments through the years,” said Rob Buckner, Chevrolet INDYCAR program manager. “That dedication to a collaborative effort resulted in maximizing available off-season testing in preparation of for the 2021 season. With a talented lineup of drivers and skilled teams backed by Chevy power, we look forward to achieving more milestones this season.”

Chevrolet has won six of the past eight races on the 2.38-mile, 17-turn road course in Birmingham, Alabama. The event was canceled in 2020 because of COVID-19. Two-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Josef Newgarden, driver of the No. 2 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet, is the only three-time winner.

“I think we’ve got a good opportunity to come out pretty strong this year,” said Newgarden, who won from the pole in 2018 along with victories in 2015 and ’17. “I think we’ve done a lot of good work this off-season. I’m very encouraged about everywhere we’re going, to be honest, Barber included. I can’t wait to get going this weekend.”

Newgarden, runner-up in the 2020 championship standings, also posted top-five finishes in 2019 and 2016 on the natural-terrain course that features 80 feet of elevation change. Teammates Will Power, No. 12 Verizon 5G Team Penske Chevrolet, and Simon Pagenaud, No. 22 Menards Team Penske Chevrolet, have also notched victories.

Team Penske will field a fourth full-season Chevrolet entry driven by three-time Australian SuperCar champion Scott McLaughlin, who made his Series debut in the 2020 finale.

“This track requires a lot of commitment, a lot of bravery and a lot of commitment to the aerodynamics of the car,” he said of Barber Motorsports Park. “That’s something I’m getting used to right now. Having a couple test days puts me in good stead knowing what I’ve got and what I will have chassis-wise when we hit the track on Saturday morning.”

Felix Rosenqvist, who edged Pato O’Ward for the victory at Road America last season, has joined Arrow McLaren SP as O’Ward’s teammate in the No. 7 Vuse Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet. Dalton Kellett, No. 4 K-Line Insulators USA Chevrolet, returns to A.J. Foyt Enterprises after competing in eight races in 2020. He will be joined for the full season by four-time Indy car champion Sebastien Bourdais, No. 14 ROKiT Chevrolet.

Veteran Conor Daly will drive the No. 20 U.S. Air Force Chevrolet for Ed Carpenter Racing in road/street course events, with the team namesake taking the wheel on ovals. Daly will also drive in the Indianapolis 500 for the team. Rinus VeeKay, the 2020 NTT INDYCAR SERIES Rookie of the Year, returns to Ed Carpenter Racing in the No. 21 Sonax/Autogeek Chevrolet.

NBC will telecast the 90-lap/214-mile race at 3 p.m. ET April 18. The race will also be broadcast live on INDYCAR Radio Network affiliates, Sirius 211, XM 205, Indycar.com, and on the INDYCAR Mobile app powered by NTT DATA. Truex on Racing at Richmond: “Richmond is a difficult track,” said Truex. “But I’m looking forward to getting back on pavement after Bristol. I have 10 starts there in Xfinity and Cup, but Saturday’s race will be my first time there in a truck. Richmond has very normal characteristics of a short track, but it is a lot slicker than other places we go – you are fighting front and rear grip on the exit of the corners. My team has been working hard on our short-track program and I’m confident we’ll have a strong run for Andrea, Viera and everyone at Marquis and Make-A-Wish.”

Truex on Marquis 900 Wishes Paint Scheme: “It’s really an honor to carry 900 really special Make-A-Wish names this weekend at Richmond,” said Truex. “I’m honored to work with Marquis and for the work that they do with a truly incredible organization like Make-A-Wish. This might be my first Truck Series start at Richmond, but I have a lot of Xfinity and Cup experience here that I think will pay off. I’m excited for Saturday afternoon’s race.”

Truex at Richmond: While it is Truex’s first start in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series at Richmond Raceway, the 29-year-old driver is no stranger to the .75-mile track, with seven NASCAR Xfinity Series starts to his credit. In those seven starts, Truex has one top-five finish and three top-10 finishes.

Truex also has three NASCAR Cup Series starts to his credit, with his most recent coming in 2014.

On the Truck: The No. 40 Chevrolet will carry Marquis and Make-A-Wish colors at Richmond Raceway.

Andrea’s signature graces both doors, and eight-year-old Viera’s wish marks this 900th milestone. In honor of World Wish Day on April 29th, please donate at wish.org/promotions.

Historic Trans Am Series Added to Toyota/Save Mart 350 Weekend in Sonoma

SONOMA, Calif. (April 14, 2021) – Modern racing technology meets historic horsepower as the Historic Trans Am Series joins the on-track lineup for the Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Cup Series event at Sonoma Raceway, June 5-6.

A 24-car field of historic muscle cars, including Mustangs, Camaros, Javelins, Firebirds and Cougars will hit the track on Saturday and Sunday. These are real race cars – not reproductions – racing and competing 50 years after the series’ heyday in the late 1960s and early ‘70s.

The cars, including a 1968 Sunoco Camaro originally driven by Mark Donohue and 1970 Dodge Challenger driven by Sam Posey, have been restored to their original condition and are raced hard by drivers dedicated to honoring the history of this iconic series.

“We are dedicated to providing an unforgettable race weekend for our fans, and we know that the roar of these historic machines will put on an incredible show,” said Sonoma Raceway Executive Vice President and General Manager Jill Gregory. “So much racing history lies in these cars and we look forward to them joining us NASCAR weekend.”

The Historic Trans Am Series will hit the track on Saturday morning with practice beginning at 9 a.m., qualifying at 10:30 a.m. and a 30-minute timed race at 1 p.m. Sunday’s Historic Trans Am action will kick off with warm up laps at 9:15 a.m. followed by another 30-minute feature at 10:30 a.m.

“The 1966-72 Trans Am Series has always been my favorite,” said FOX Sports NASCAR Announcer Mike Joy. “These drivers were my heroes before I became involved in NASCAR. It was such a thrill to watch Dan Gurney, Parnelli Jones, Mark Donohue, George Follmer and Sam Posey race wheel-to-wheel in factory-backed pony cars prepared by great teams like Roger Penske, Bud Moore, Shelby and Chaparral.

“And these are those exact cars; not replicas or tributes. They are the actual restored cars that raced in the Trans Am back in those glory days. I can’t wait. When these cars get on track, I’ll be 21 again.”

This marks the first time the Historic Trans Am Series will join the NASCAR weekend in Sonoma. The series was originally scheduled to join NASCAR race weekend in 2020 before the race was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 90-lap Toyota/Save Mart 350 takes the green flag on Sunday at 1 p.m. while Saturday’s ARCA Menards Series West 50-lap General Tire 200 begins at 2 p.m.

Due to social distancing requirements, limited tickets and camping are available, June 5-6. Kids 12 and under get in FREE on Saturday, and for just $10 on Sunday; parking is FREE all weekend. For more information, visit SonomaRaceway.com, call 800-870-7223 or follow on social media @RaceSonoma.

Sonoma Raceway continues to work with local health officials and is dedicated to following all state, local and CDC health guidelines. COVID-19 safety protocols, including face mask requirements, social distancing and cashless transactions, will remain in place for the June race weekend.

Martinsville Recap: Denny Hamlin extended his championship lead to 76 points Sunday with a third-place finish at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway after dominating most of the race. Hamlin’s dominance started Saturday night, when the 263-mile race initially went green, until rain forced a red flag after 41 laps. Once the race resumed on Sunday afternoon, the FedEx Camry continued to show its power and nimble handling around the paperclip-shaped short track – especially on the short runs. With 15 cautions, there were plenty of opportunities for the team to show its short-run strength on restarts. But the race stayed green for the latter part of Stage 3, allowing Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Martin Truex Jr. to close in on Hamlin and make a late pass on Lap 485. Chase Elliott then passed Hamlin as well, putting the #11 in third for the finish.

Richmond Preview: The NASCAR Cup Series heads to Hamlin’s home track of Richmond Raceway for a 300-mile event on Sunday. The Chesterfield, Va., native has three wins at the three-quarter-mile oval, plus 13 top-five and 17 top-10 finishes. Hamlin will look to the familiar track to bring him his first win of the season and to extend his championship points lead.

Hamlin Conversation – Richmond:

You’ve now finished in the top five in seven of the eight races this season. What needs to happen for you to get into Victory Lane?

“We can win any given week. We just keep getting beat by one or two cars that have a little bit better balance. But we’re getting closer. There’s nothing saying we can’t win the next three races.”

How does it feel to be heading home next weekend for the race at Richmond?

“It’s always great getting to race at my hometown track. I’ve been fortunate to have had success at Richmond in my career, and I know my team and I are excited for the challenge ahead this weekend to hopefully get a win.”

FedEx Express Along for the Ride at Richmond: The 2021 fiscal year created a unique paradigm shift in the business operations at the WASA station, which is located in the heart of Washington, D.C. Team members were required to adjust to a myriad of security restrictions and access protocols in the nation’s capital, also warranting extraordinary measures to comply with access formalities. In addition, WASA volunteers assisted their Liberty District sister station ILGA with deliveries when pandemic-related absences created staffing shortages. That is why FedEx Express is pleased to recognize the WASA team by featuring the letters WASA on the B-post of the FedEx #11 at the Richmond Raceway Toyota Owners 400.

Mooresville, NC (April 14, 2021) – Spencer ‘The Bald Eagle’ Boyd has added another Made In America company to his sponsor lineup in 2021. Eastlake, OH EZPOLE Flagpoles will be the primary sponsor of the Youngs Motorsports No. 20 Chevrolet Silverado at Bristol Motor Speedway in September. A special tribute paint scheme will be run marking the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

“Never Forget is a term that we as Americans should honestly never forget,” said 25-year-old Boyd. “That’s why I’ve teamed up with EZPOLE for this race. They support our first responders and veterans everyday while providing jobs for hard-working Americans. Nothing would please me more than to look up and see the Bristol Motor Speedway stands filled with American and Never Forget flags at our race in honor of all the families that lost loved-ones that day.”

EZPOLE manufacturers residential and commercial flagpoles so that people can fly their American Made flags on American Made poles. “Most people don’t realize the pole they fly their American flag on was made overseas,” said Todd Adkins of EZPOLE. “We have a solution for that at EZPOLE, so jump on our website, www.ezpole.com to get a new residential flag and pole kit to represent the USA 100%.”

EZPOLE sells more than just American flags and flag poles on their website. You can get your state’s flag or a Gadsden flag on their website. You can get accessories to light up your flag or mounts to mount your flagpole just about anywhere. They also have The Patriot Store which sells apparel and other items to display your patriotism.

Firefighters were a huge part of the lifesaving efforts on September 11, 2001. As such there are two parts of the partnership that honor firefighters. EZPOLE is selling their limited edition ‘Champion Bred’ t-shirts with UFC Fighter Stipe Miocic on EZPOLE.com with proceeds going to help out first responders. The truck will also have a special passenger riding shotgun with Spencer for the race. The late Danny Foley, FDNY firefighter and hunting friend of Spencer Boyd, will have his name grace the passenger side of the EZPOLE No. 20 for the race at Bristol.

Spencer Boyd reflected, “I’m insanely proud to be an American. I love to see new Americans come to our country and see what I see which is the greatest place on earth. If it wasn’t for the people that came before us to pave the way for our freedoms, we wouldn’t be racing. I just want to do my little bit to honor them.”

EZPOLE’s first appearance with Boyd will be at Richmond Raceway on the No. 20 WML Enterprises Silverado. The paint scheme for Spencer Boyd and EZPOLE’s No. 20 Chevrolet Silverado will be unveiled at a later date.
