NASCAR 2021: The Year In Preview

Photo by Patrick Sue-Can for SpeedwayMedia.com.
A satirical look at some of the headlines we might see during the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series season.

*FedEx introduces a new “6-Hour Delivery” option, and features it on Denny Hamlin’s No. 11 car at Daytona, and in a television ad, in which Hamlin utters the slogan, “You Have Got To Be Shipping Me.”

Hamlin wins at Daytona on February 14th, and goes on to win his first Cup championship.

*Corey LaJoie has a political revelation and does a complete 180 when his car at Homestead on February 28th sports a “Hindsight Is 2020” slogan.

*The full maturation of Kyle Busch becomes apparent when he is ticketed in Florida in March for driving under the minimum speed limit. It is short-lived, as a frustrated Busch peels out after receiving the ticket and is subsequently charged with reckless driving.

Busch returns to form with six wins on the season and joins Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, and upstart Matt DiBenedetto in the championship round at Phoenix.

*In May, leaked emails reveal that Haylee Deegan’s sensitivity training instructor was none other than Tony Stewart, an eight-time sensitivity training graduate and Professor Emeritus of sensitivity training schools, where he earned the nickname “Dean Of Mean.”

Deegan tangles with John Hunter Nemechek at Bristol on March 27th, sending them both into the wall and out of the race. The two argue, and Nemechek accuses Deegan of calling him the “R” word. Deegan doesn’t deny the allegation and explains that the “R” stood for “Responsible.”

*On May 22nd, Jimmie Johnson fills in for an injured Tony Kanaan and qualifies on the fifth row for the Indianapolis 500, but not before running eight laps around Indy’s 2.5-mile circuit, swimming 50 laps of the infield lake, and biking 20 laps.

Johnson finishes 19th in the 500, and records his best result of the season with a second at Laguna Seca on September 19th.

*Bubba Wallace is listed as a 60-1 longshot to win at Talladega on April 25, odds which attract the attention of team co-owner Michael Jordan. Jordan contemplates placing a $200,000 wager on Wallace to win, and after consulting with Pete Rose on betting ethics, goes against Rose’s advice and decides not to place the bet. After a wreck-filled race, Wallace wins in overtime, and Jordan laments not winning $12 million.

*On March 28th at Bristol, Ryan Blaney takes the dirt track win and celebrates by kissing the track surface. The action triggers a panic attack, caused by the emergence of repressed memories of a traumatic event from 2018 at Martinsville, where Blaney was ninja-smooched on the lips by an overzealous, snuff-dipping super fan.

Blaney wins four races on the year, including his second consecutive Talladega spring race.

*Chase Elliott’s new all-Hooters employees fan club, the “Woo-Hooters,” cheer the defending Cup champion to a six-win season, including three road course wins. Elliott is also the points leader as the championship commences at Darlington.

Elliott fails to advance to the Round Of 8 after spinning late while leading at Charlotte in the Bank Of America ROVAL 400.

*Martin Truex Jr. wins at Watkins Glen on August 8, where an unfortunate typo lists him as the winner of the “Go Blowing At The Glen,” a term that becomes a popular meme and bad news for anyone named “Glen” or “Glenn.”

Truex posts three wins on the year and advances to the Round Of 8 in the playoffs.

*Kevin Harvick wins the Dixie Vodka 400 at Homestead on February 28 to take his first win of the year. Harvick celebrates in Victory Circle with a shot of Dixie Vodka chased by a can of Busch Light, a drink Harvick dubs the “Vodka Sonic.”

*A crazed lunatic in a hockey mask terrorizes Martinsville Speedway on October 31 before the running of the Xfinity 500, causing mass panic and a brief track lockdown. As it turns out, the stunt was the brainchild of NBC’s Rutledge Wood in an effort to publicize his new show on the “Shudder” platform called “America’s Most Haunted Sports Cars.”

*At Richmond on April 18th, new Fox commentator Clint Bowyer is accused of obvious bias for his former Stewart-Haas Racing team, and Bowyer again finds himself in another “intentional spin” controversy at Richmond.

*On July 4, Xfinity drivers Harrison Burton and Noah Gragson meet in a four-round charity boxing match that, despite going the distance, somehow features less action than their five-second fistfight at Kentucky Speedway in July of 2020.

The bout, titled “Throw Hands Throw Down,” sports a .01 pay-per-view buy rate, but raises $150,000 and attracts the attention of YouTuber brother/douchebag duo Jake and Logan Paul, who challenge Burton and Gragson to a tag-team contest at All Elite Wrestling’s October Twitter-sponsored PPV, “Trick Or Tweet.”

NFL’s Antonio Williams ready to hit the ground running with Joe Graf Jr.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla: Big things are happening for NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Joe Graf Jr.

Less than a week after officially announcing his return to SS GreenLight Racing for a sophomore season, National Football League (NFL) player and Buffalo Bills running back Antonio Williams has announced he will become a partner in Graf Jr.’s racing platform beginning with Saturday’s Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner 300 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.

A friendship that was sparked through a mutual friend, Williams has committed himself to helping Graf expand his current relationships in the sport, while also bringing new interest to Graf and his team through his current connections and visions.

Williams will be heavily involved in Graf’s day-to-day business interactions, while also playing a key role as a supporter of his racing endeavors by attending races, including this weekend’s season-opener at Daytona.

Together, the two are focused on Graf reaching the pinnacle of the sport, the NASCAR Cup Series in the near future.

“I’m so excited to work with Antonio,” said Graf Jr., driver of the No. 07 Bucked Up Energy Chevrolet Camaro. “Not only is he a NASCAR fan, but he has quickly gone to work behind the scenes as an investor and partner in my racing platform and is eager to expand his responsibilities as the season gets underway.

“He has a lot of fresh and unique ideas, as well as a huge following and relationships he plans to bring to NASCAR. He’s someone who is determined to give nothing less than 150 percent in his role and make a difference both on and off the race track. We are going to have a lot of fun intertwining our two worlds.”

With a lot of hype around NASCAR entering the 2021 season, Williams felt the timing was perfect.

“NASCAR is going through a huge transition right now and it feels like the right opportunity for me to get involved and be a partner,” said Williams. “I am extremely happy and excited to be an investor with Joe Graf Jr. and his platforms.

“Getting to know him as a person, not only as an athlete but on a friendship level has been great and I couldn’t think of another up-and-coming driver with my same initiatives to partner with.”

Williams, 23, who resides near Durham, N.C. has been a lifelong NASCAR fan and rekindling his passion for the sport with his new involvement with Graf has huge potential.

“Growing up as a kid, watching NASCAR and being a fan with my grandfather is something that I will always cherish and remember,” Williams added. “Now, being able to be involved on an investor level means so much to me. Joe and I share many things from an athlete standpoint and a personal level.

“From sharing the same sports psychologist to striving to be the best versions of ourselves in our particular field is what makes this relationship special. I look forward to working with Joe and being a part of his journey.

“The sky is the limit, and we have big things planned for the future.”
Williams is already scoring touchdowns with Graf Jr. He was instrumental in bringing Z Grills, the wood pellet grill manufacturer to the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

“The entire team worked really hard on this deal,” sounded Williams. We are working really to bring more sponsors to the platform.”

Dreams come true for Greg Van Alst at Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.: Chuck Norris once said, “Dreams do come true, if you want them bad enough.”

For ARCA Menards Series driver Greg Van Alst that quote hits home as the 2019 ARCA CRA champion will return to the series for the first time since 2002 to compete in Saturday afternoon’s Lucas Oil 200 driven by General Tire at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.

It’s been a 13-month process for Van Alst to put his Greg Van Alst Motorsports on track for the 2021 season-opener. An opportunity to test at the “World Center of Racing” in January 2020 reignited a flame for Van Alst to return to the tour and now with the help of some of ARCA’s heavy hitters, his dream is becoming a reality.

“I feel like it’s Christmas Day or I just arrived at Disney World,” joked Van Alst. “I’m so excited, thankful and humbled to be heading to Daytona this week. It’s been a lot of hard work, countless hours of lost sleep – but it’s all worth it once that green flag drops on Saturday afternoon.”

Over the winter Van Alst acquired a superspeedway car from Chad Bryant Racing and with the help of Bryant, veteran and NASCAR championship crew chief Paul Andrews and Van Alst Motorsports crew chief Jim Long – Van Alst is upbeat about his chances in the 80-lap contest.

“Honestly, it all came together really fast during the off-season,” Van Alst admitted. “Really, one race turned into two races and with the help of my primary marketing partner a one-two-race deal has blossomed into a minimum 10-race deal and maybe with some luck a few more in-between.”

Showcasing his car’s ability during the open ARCA Menards Series test at Daytona in January, Van Alst knows he has a car capable of winning the race, but don’t mind if the Anderson, Ind. native falls back early in the race and just waits to make his mark.

“I’m a racer, so I know you have to be around at the end to have any chance of winning,” said Van Alst.

“That’s our strategy if we get caught in the middle early or somehow don’t have the starting position we want, we’ll let the race get to halfway or 30 laps to go or so and then make our march forward.

“I know the capabilities of our No. 35 Chevrolet SS. We proved that in the test. It was very sturdy and solid in the draft and produced a lot of speed in the single-car runs, so I know we have a good piece. I just have to take care of it if we’re going to have any shot of bringing home that Daytona trophy.”

Van Alst also has extra motivation to win on Saturday afternoon. His family will be in attendance, watching the race as spectators and rooting him on with every lap complete.

“I want so bad to be able to take that checkered flag and go and do a burnout in front of my family,” sounded Van Alst. “You talk about motivation, that’s it for me. My family supports me 100 percent and I’d love to reward them with a victory celebration at Daytona. It does not get any better than that.”

CB Fabricating, a longtime partner with Greg Van Alst Motorsports will boost its commitment to the team and make the leap to the ARCA Menards Series as the primary marketing partner of Van Alst’s No. 35 Chevrolet.

Headquartered in Anderson, Ind., CB Fabricating offers a complete list of fabricating from design, laser cutting, CNC punching, forming, welding, powder coating, and assembly.

Their 26,000 square foot facility allows them to service the needs of many different industries. Everything from the Automotive, agricultural, aquatic, medical, transportation, electrical enclosures, and much more.

“Without the support of Chris Barkdull and everyone at CB Fabricating, this chance to elevate our team to the next level would not have been possible,” added Van Alst. “We have set goals for ourselves in 2021 and I believe we are aligning ourselves with the right people who can allow us to turn heads not only at Daytona but throughout the 2021 season.”

In addition to CB Fabricating, Top Choice Fence, Kenny Greene No. 49, Norton Transport, KRJ Race Products and Lintz Creative will serve as associate marketing partners for Van Alst’s fourth career ARCA start.

Additional specifics on Greg Van Alst Motorsports’ 2021 ARCA Menards Series program is forthcoming, including a detailed series schedule.

The Lucas Oil 200 driven by General Tire (80 laps | 200 miles) is the first of 20 races on the 2021 ARCA Menards Series schedule. Practice begins Fri., Feb. 12 with a one-hour session from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Group qualifying is set for race day, Sat., Feb. 13 at 8:30 a.m. The season-opener for the 69th consecutive ARCA season is set to take the green flag shortly after 1:30 p.m. The event will be televised live on FOX Sports 1 (FS1), while ARCARacing.com will stream live timing and scoring throughout the entire weekend festivities.

Peter Gregg Foundation to foster the careers of aspiring engineers

JACKSONVILLE, FL (10 February 2020) – Second-generation Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli driver Simon Gregg announced the formation of the Peter Gregg Foundation and Peter Gregg Gallery, paying tribute to his father, an American sports car legend.

The Foundation will foster the careers of aspiring engineers by providing mentorship and roles with current contending race teams.

“I’m starting a foundation, the Peter Gregg Foundation,” Simon Gregg. “The Foundation will have an annual contest that will award five scholarships to deserving young people who have an interest in working on high-performance sports cars. We’re looking to find our future mechanics and engineers.

“We have a nice long list of professionals, everything from drivers to team owners to mechanics and pit crewmen, who will act as mentors for the scholarship winners,” Gregg added.

The Foundation will be headquartered in Jacksonville, and will open the scholarship contest on March 1. The winners will be announced in late spring, and will be taken to Jacksonville where they will work with their mentors on a Porsche for three months to get it race ready. That car will be auctioned off, while the scholarship winners will each go off to a private team or shop to help further their careers. That list will be announced at the beginning of the contest.

Simon Gregg also announced the opening of the Peter Gregg Gallery, which will be officially launched at the end of February with a combined in-person and virtual ceremony. The Gallery includes several of the elder Gregg’s cars that have been restored by his son, including a pair of nice street Porsches and a Lola Can-Am car.

Peter Gregg won the Trans Am title in 1973 and 1974, winning three races and placing second three times in a Porsche Carrera. He won his final two Trans Am races at Road America and Laguna Seca in a Porsche 935 in 1979, giving him 22 victories in 54 starts. He also won six career IMSA championships and was a six-time winner of the Rolex 24 At Daytona – an event he won overall four times.

Hailie Deegan, No. 1 Monster Energy Ford F-150

Deegan’s No. 1 Monster Energy Ford F-150 will have owners points from last year’s No. 17 Truck Series entry.
The 19-year-old driver will have veteran crew chief Mike Hillman Jr. calling the shots from atop the pit box for her rookie Truck Series season. Additionally, spotter TJ Majors will be Deegan’s eyes in the sky for her first full-time season in the Truck Series.

The California native has one Truck Series start on her resume. In October of last year, she started 34th at Kansas Speedway and finished 16th. The result was the best finish by a female competitor in her first series start.
The Ford driver has one previous start at Daytona’s 2.5-mile high-banked oval. In 2020, she started seventh in the ARCA Menards Series and finished runner-up in the 80-lap event.
In preparation for the season, Deegan has spent several hours at the simulator, practicing pit stops and visiting the race shop.

Deegan on her 2021 season:

Is there anything you can take from your ARCA and K&N experience over to the Truck Series?

“The ARCA and K&N cars are so different from the trucks, from what I learned at Kansas last year. I don’t even really know what to compare those cars to. The Kansas truck race last year was really beneficial to me going into this year. I learned how different the truck is going to drive from what I’m used to in ARCA and K&N. It was nice to get one race under my belt before this season starts.”

What are some goals and expectations you have for yourself going into this season?

“I think its more about earning respect on the track, earning the respect of other people in the garage instead of just having statistical goals. I’m sure it will be a big learning year for me and that I will have tough moments, but taking those moments and learning from them will be key.”

Tanner Gray, No. 15 Ford Performance F-150

Gray is reunited with crew chief Shane Wilson and spotter Kevin Hamlin for a second consecutive season. The trio will look to build on the foundation they established in Tanner’s 2020 rookie season.
The 21-year-old has two career starts at Daytona both coming during 2020 speedweeks in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) and ARCA Menards Series.

Survival is the name of the game for Gray at Daytona as both of his superspeedway starts last season were cut short by multi-vehicle incidents.

Gray will pull double duty this week as, in addition to his NCWTS duties, he will take the helm of the No. 17 Ripper Coffee Ford Fusion in the Lucas Oil 200 Driven by General Tire with the ARCA Menards Series on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. ET.

The New Mexico native earned four top-five and eight top-10 finishes in 2020 with a career-best finish of third three times – once each at Michigan International Speedway, Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway and Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway.

Gray on Daytona: “I am really looking forward to Daytona and another opportunity to learn this style of racing. I have only been able to run a handful of superspeedway races so far in my career between ARCA and the Camping World Truck Series, and honestly just haven’t had much luck in any of them. Last season we were running near the top-10 and got caught up in a big wreck, so the goal this year is to learn as much as I can and survive until the end, and hopefully that gives us a chance to win.”

David Gilliland, No. 17 Black’s Tire and Auto Service Ford F-150

Gilliland will run the Black’s Tire and Auto Service livery for his Daytona attempt in the No. 17 Ford F-150. Black’s Tire and Auto Service began their partnership with Gilliland in 2015.

Last year, Gilliland made two Truck Series starts and earned a best finish of 12th. In total, he currently has 17 Truck Series starts spanning six years.

Gilliland has three Truck Series starts at the 2.5-mile superspeedway and earned the pole position in his 2018 start. His best finish at Daytona in the Truck Series is sixth, captured in 2015.

Gilliland co-owns David Gilliland Racing with businessman Johnny Gray. An ownership change over the offseason resulted in a rebranding of the Truck Series team from DGR-Crosley to David Gilliland Racing.

Gilliland on Daytona: “It is always special to reunite with Black’s Tire and Auto Service and to be able to do it at Daytona makes it even sweeter. We will have to make sure we lay down a good qualifying lap to lock into the race, but I am confident and excited to be able to compete in one of our DGR Ford F-150 trucks.”
