Wood Brothers Racing Honored with Prestigious FIA Heritage Cup

Award Recognizes Wood Brothers’ Passion and Preservation of Motorsports History

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Dec. 11, 2020) – For 70 years Wood Brothers Racing has excelled in – and transformed – the world of motorsports. As the longest tenured team in NASCAR history, the Wood Brothers have compiled a literal Hall of Fame resume both on and off the track. Beyond their countless trophies and accolades, innovations including the modern pit stop continue to define the Wood’s legacy in racing series across the globe.

For their accomplishments across seven decades, Wood Brothers Racing has been named the 2020 recipient of the FIA Founding Members Club Heritage Cup. The award is presented to an individual, institution, entity, or object in recognition of exceptional or outstanding achievement within or contribution to the historic vehicle world.

“It truly is an honor to win this award,” said Eddie Wood, Wood Brothers Racing president and co-owner, and son of team founder Glen Wood. “The fact that it’s a worldwide honor makes it even more special. We’re mainly known in American motorsports, but this is much bigger than that.”

Wood was a child when the team helped Jim Clark win the 1965 Indianapolis 500, but recalls the attention it brought his father’s team.

“I was young when Indy was going on, but I remember him talking about the worldwide recognition they received,” Wood said. “He was honored for people around the world to have heard of him and his brothers and what they were doing.”

Glen also lent his expertise to the Ford factory team at Le Mans in 1966 when the GT40 Mark II teams swept the top three finishing positions in the iconic 24-hour event. The team’s affiliation with Ford Motor Company continues to this day, seventy years strong.

In support of their nomination for the prestigious award, NASCAR Chairman and CEO Jim France wrote, “Having worked with them for almost 60 years, I can personally attest to their great character and dedication to motorsports. I can think of no group more deserving of the FIA Founding Members Club Heritage Cup Award.”

Wood Brothers Racing has always had a knack for attracting the greatest racing talent in the world. Ten NASCAR Hall of Famers have taken the wheel for the team (Glen Wood, Curtis Turner, Junior Johnson, Joe Weatherly, Fred Lorenzen, Cale Yarborough, David Pearson, Buddy Baker, Dale Jarrett and Bill Elliott) as well as some of the biggest names in open wheel racing – A.J. Foyt, Dan Gurney and Parnelli Jones.

The team remains committed to the preservation of motorsports history. Its one-time shop has been converted into a museum that traces the Wood’s time in motorsports. They have also built replica cars for the NASCAR Hall of Fame and The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn Michigan.

Ford Performance NASCAR: Riley Herbst Zoom Call Transcript

Ford Performance Notes and Quotes

NASCAR Xfinity Series

Thursday, December 10, 2020

Stewart-Haas Racing announced this afternoon that Riley Herbst will drive the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang in 2021. Herbst, who started all 33 series events last season, will replace Chase Briscoe, who has been promoted to the NASCAR Cup Series. Here is a transcript of today’s Ford Zoom call with Herbst and members of the media.

RILEY HERBST, No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang – WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS IN MAKING THE MOVE TO FORD AND STEWART-HAAS RACING? “I’m just excited. I’m happy to be here and ready to get down to Daytona.”

TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT HAVING RICHARD BOSWELL AS YOUR CREW CHIEF? “That was a big proponent of me coming over here to the 98 camp. I’m really looking forward to working with Richard and everybody on his team that he has assembled. I’ve spent a little bit amount of time with him so far and he’s a really down to earth guy and he’s a racer and wants to win races, but he also puts in a lot of work behind his effort so I’m looking forward to it.”

WHAT’S IMPORTANT TO YOU IN A CREW CHIEF AT THIS STAGE OF YOUR CAREER? “Somebody that will learn with me and grow with me and have some patience. I have a learning curve to be on, I’ll be the first to admit that, but I want somebody to walk me through that and help me get to where I want to be and obviously that’s in the Cup Series and win races in the Cup Series and be competitive week in and week out and Richard is the man and he’s gonna be the man to help me do that and I’m excited.”

DOES THIS FEEL LIKE STARTING OVER IN A WAY FOR YOU? “A little bit. I feel like I’m kind of 17 again and moved out to the east coast because I’ve been over in the JGR family for four years now, so it was a big transition but it’s one I think I needed and I’m looking forward to it. All these new faces kind of give me a blank sheet to start up again and see where this can take me.”

WHAT WOULD A SUCCESSFUL 2021 SEASON LOOK LIKE FOR YOU CONSIDERING WHAT CHASE BRISCOE DID IN THIS CAR A YEAR AGO? “I have to win races. I have to be competitive. This car was the best car week in and week out last year. That has a lot to do with Chase Briscoe. As you can see he’s in the Cup Series now. He’s a heck of a wheel man himself, but I know Richard Boswell and all the guys on the 98 team are really smart and know what they’re doing and they’re gonna bring me just as fast race cars as they did last year with Chase, so it’s on me.”

YOU HAD A SOLID ROOKIE YEAR AND HAD TEAMMATES THAT WERE ABLE TO BREAK THROUGH WITH MULTIPLE WINS. HOW TOUGH WAS THAT TO SEE AND HOW IMPORTANT IS IT NOW TO BE HERE AT SHR AND FORD AND BEING THE MAIN FOCUS OF THIS TEAM? “It was difficult for the first half for me to process, but my teammates last year had a lot more experience than I did on these race tracks. Brandon has been in the series for quite some time now and he’s a good driver as well and Harrison has been in the truck series and he knows what it took to compete in the top three national series. Harrison is really fast himself, so I wasn’t surprise that they won races. I was a little surprised that we couldn’t break into victory lane. That did shock me a little bit, but, then again, with the whole Covid protocols and being at these race tracks I’ve never been to before with no practice and no testing I think people forget about that and I was just showing up to race tracks I’ve never seen before and having to race. I think we adapted well to it. Do I think I performed to my expectations or anybody’s expectation? I don’t think so at all, but I think that’s what this upcoming year is for with the 98 team.”

WHAT WILL IT BE LIKE TO NOT HAVE TEAMMATES THIS YEAR? “Kind of going back to 2017 and 2018 when I ran the ARCA Series I didn’t have any teammates there. It’s definitely a different change of environment. You can’t really bounce things off your other teammates during race weekends and things like that, but, like I said before, Richard’s got a really deep notebook so I can lean on Richard super hard for notes and questions like that and trust his setups and trust his notebooks.”

DO YOU FEEL YOU GOT WHAT YOU NEEDED OUT OF JGR TO TAKE THIS STEP TO ANOTHER TEAM? DO YOU WISH YOU HAD DONE ANYTHING DIFFERENTLY? “I don’t know. That’s a tough question. Like I said, I think my time at JGR just came to an end. We left on really good grounds over there. I’m really good friends with Ty and the whole family over there, that they truly are family to me and I loved working with the people over there, but it was time for a change for myself and for my career to try and revitalize it and try to go get wins. Hopefully, I can make it.”

TONY STEWART HAS A HISTORY OF TAKING ON DRIVERS THAT MAY HAVE HAD A ROUGH STRETCH AND WHERE PEOPLE MIGHT SAY, ‘WHY DID HE PICK THEM?’ HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT BEING PART OF SHR AND BEING ASSOCIATED WITH A TEAM THAT BRINGS THE MOST OUT OF A COMPETITOR? “I’m hoping it does the same thing as it’s done to previous drivers. I hope that they can find the most out of me. That means good for me. That means good for the team, so that’s what we’re trying to do. When it comes to what people say it sucks. Everybody would like everybody to be happy for everybody, but that’s just not how this world works nowadays. People are just straight-up mean, so it doesn’t really bother too much anymore. A few years ago it did, but those people are probably just haters, so it’s all good.”

HOW DID YOU FEEL LIKE THE COMPETITION WAS IN THE XFINTY SERIES COMPARED TO WHAT YOU WERE EXPECTING, AND HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT NEXT SEASON? “The competition in the XFINITY Series is really difficult. All of the guys are really good and I kind of expected that coming up. I knew it was gonna be a challenge to race in this series and those guys were there for a reason and they’re really fast. I hope I’m in a better position to go win races this year, just with that year of experience underneath my belt and with this new team I’ve joined at Stewart-Haas Racing I feel like this is my best foot forward to try to go win races for sure.”

HOW MUCH PRESSURE DO YOU PUT ON YOURSELF IN 2021 AND NOT TRY TO REPEAT WHAT CHASE DID LAST SEASON? “I kind of just worry about myself. Like I said, Chase Briscoe is a really, really good race car driver. He had a phenomenal season last year and he’s in the 14 Cup car now for a reason, but I’m kind of just gonna put my horse blinders on and work with Richard and the guys and try to go out and win races and do the best that I can do.”

Trans Am Launches Pro/Am Challenge

Trans Am, SCCA Crossover Initiative to Introduce Road Racers to Trans Am Racing

MIAMI, FLA. (10 December 2020)- Through the decades, names like Scott Pruett to Tommy Kendall to Greg Picket have been synonymous with Trans Am competition. But with the launch of a new initiative, the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli will introduce a new path to professional road racing in 2021 that could see a new generation of racers adding their names to that roster of all-time greats.

Partnering with the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), Trans Am will launch a crossover program called the Trans Am Pro/Am Challenge, which will introduce SCCA drivers looking to take their next step, to the North American stage of Trans Am.

Making an easy path for teams to crossover to Trans Am is the primary focus of the new Pro/Am Challenge, with the 2021 schedule and rules package providing flexibility for teams and drivers to chase both their Pro/Am Challenge and their SCCA Road Racing goals in the same year.

“We have been working with SCCA for some time now to foster a program that would be an exciting crossover opportunity for a lot of racers, so we are glad to get the sign off to be able to move forward with this,” said Trans Am Race Company President John Clagett. “Since the beginning of Trans Am, countless drivers have crossed back and forth between SCCA and Trans Am to make up their annual race schedule. Even today, many Trans Am regulars are also seen in the paddock at SCCA events. Some teams run more, or fewer, Trans Am races depending on if they decide to pursue the SCCA National Runoffs Championship or the Trans Am Championship for that year. Now with the Pro/Am Challenge, teams and drivers can do both.”

Any driver planning to compete in the Runoffs will be allowed to use two Trans Am races as part of their Runoffs prerequisites, which is yet another attractive aspect of the SCCA/Trans Am crossover package.

“Trans Am is a significant part of the SCCA’s rich motorsports’ history and the partnership between Parella, SCCA Pro Racing and TARC has fueled much growth in that brand across the past several years,” said SCCA President Mike Cobb. “Many Trans Am drivers compete in SCCA Road Racing events as well, so the ‘Pro Path’ to the Runoffs is a natural, that gives drivers more options to race while earning the opportunity to compete in the SCCA National Championship Runoffs.”

Charlotte Motor Speedway (March 18-21) and Sonoma Raceway (April 23-25) have been designated as the Trans Am Pro/Am Challenge feature events. Racers who are vying for the Pro/Am Challenge Championship will pick four more races of their choosing (any National or West Coast Trans Am event) thus creating a six-race championship season.

The Charlotte and Sonoma races are part of Trans Am’s one tow, double race weekend efforts to create as much opportunity to race at great tracks for a reasonable budget. Following Charlotte, teams will travel to Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta (March 25-28). On the national west coast swing, teams will tow from Sonoma to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca (April 30-May 2).

The Charlotte and Sonoma races will feature the same two-day format that the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli West Coast Championship events utilize for practice, qualifying and one race for all five classes.

“While Laguna and Road Atlanta are not required races for the Pro/Am Challenge, they are very strategic- the races are early in the season and the tracks are great venues,” Clagett continued. “SCCA road racers don’t race frequently at Sonoma, so it is an amazing opportunity for SCCA drivers who have not had the opportunity to race at one of the great circuits in the United States.”

Tech
The new Trans Am Pro/Am Cup Challenge will allow SCCA drivers to compete in Trans Am using the same basic 2021 SCCA road racing trim for their cars, making the transition back and forth between the SCCA Road Racing program and Trans Am seamless.

The Pro/Am Challenge will be open to all five Trans Am classes. The primary SCCA classes that fit into one of the Trans Am classes are; GT1, GT2, GTX, T1, T2, T3 and STO. The various cars will be balanced into the correct Trans Am class with minor weight and restrictor changes.

Equivalent cars from other amateur clubs will also be welcomed to come race with Trans Am. All cars will be fueled by Sunoco and utilize Pirelli tires.

In an attempt to make the crossover to Trans Am even easier, entry fees will be reduced for Pro/Am Challenge competitors.

“We anticipate this to be another long-term growth program for Trans Am to develop drivers from the grassroots level,” Clagett said. “It’s also a really great opportunity for racers who might not have thought about Trans Am before.

Crossover History
Several drivers throughout history have transitioned from SCCA club racers to Trans Am stardom. One of the most notable crossover drivers was SCCA Hall of Fame driver Paul Newman, who won four SCCA national titles, became a SCCA championship car owner and recipient of the President’s Cup, SCCA’s top honor. Newman then went on to win multiple Trans Am races, in addition to racing in the 24 hours of Daytona and taking second (first in his class) at Le Mans.

Mark Donohue, two-time unofficial champion during Trans Am’s “Glory Years,” won the 1961 SCCA National title before moving to professional competition.

Other remarkable drivers who competed in SCCA competition before moving up to the Trans Am ranks were Scott Sharp (three-time National Champion and two Trans Am titles), Dorsey Schroeder (1989 Trans Am Champion), and Ave (Multiple SCCA National Championships, 2010-2011 Trans Am titles), among others.

“As a driver who got his start in SCCA Club racing, as well as a manufacturer that supplies new cars to both TA and GT-1 teams, in addition to being a team owner and driver in both disciplines, I can attest to the fact that a crossover program between SCCA Road Racing and Trans Am is an excellent idea,” said Tony Ave. “With the strength we are seeing at races like the June Sprints and the Runoffs in GT-1, the timing is right as well. I really appreciate the efforts John Clagett and Tony Parella are making to help build the TA class, and I will be supporting it both with full time TA entries as well as at least one Pro/Am entry in 2021. My thanks goes out to series management for their relentless efforts to grow the Trans Am Series.”

The Trans Am Pro/Am Challenge will replace the current Trans Am Northern and Southern Cups. A Trans Am Pro/Am Challenge contingency sponsorship for the SCCA Runoffs and marketing package will be announced in the upcoming weeks.

CBS Sports Network will highlight Trans Am in December with a three part end-of-season review series starting December 13 at 4:00pm Eastern. For more broadcast information visit, www.GoTransAm.com.

Mike Bumgarner Named Crew Chief for JRM’s No. 1 Team

Longtime Crew Chief to Lead Annett’s Championship Charge in 2021

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Dec. 10, 2020) – JR Motorsports announced today that Mike Bumgarner will be the crew chief for driver Michael Annett on the No. 1 Pilot Flying J Chevrolet in 2021. The 45-year-old North Carolina native returns to the pit box after a seven-year stint as the team’s director of race operations from 2014-20. Prior to assuming that position, Bumgarner was a full-time crew chief for the team in 2013.

“Mike is the type of person that will do whatever it takes to get the job done,” said Kelley Earnhardt Miller, general manager of JRM. “He has been a big part of all three of our NASCAR Xfinity Series championships in a variety of roles, and returning him to the crew chief position of our No. 1 team is huge for JR Motorsports. Mike is a natural leader that I know our group will rally around, and I can’t think of anyone better to lead the No. 1 team with Michael Annett.”

Bumgarner, a native of Huntersville, N.C., has 64 starts as a crew chief in the NASCAR Xfinity Series on his resume since 2007, including four victories, and was a NASCAR Cup Series car chief in the past at Hendrick Motorsports. Bumgarner most recently called the shots atop the pit box for JRM in September of 2018, leading Dale Earnhardt Jr. to a fourth-place finish at Richmond Raceway. Bumgarner was also on the No. 9 team’s pit box at Michigan earlier that year, guiding eventual series champion Tyler Reddick to a seventh-place finish while subbing for Dave Elenz. In 2016, Bumgarner’s skills were called upon as a fill-in for Kevin Meendering in the inaugural winner-take-all championship race at Homestead-Miami Speedway with driver Elliott Sadler. Sadler eventually finished third in the race and second in the championship.

“I’m very excited to be the leader of the No. 1 team here at JR Motorsports,” Bumgarner said. “What the team has established over the last few years with Michael and Travis Mack…they’ve made a lot of gains. Travis did a heck of a job with the team and they got better, and I am looking to add to that. Looking at where those guys ended the 2020 season, I want to continue on that path in 2021.”

In his position as race operations director, Bumgarner was responsible for getting JRM’s cars prepared on a weekly basis in conjunction with the individual teams.

“I don’t think it’s going to be a big change,” Bumgarner said of the transition. “If anything it’s going to help me be better. I haven’t been able to go to the race track and see what things are going on. You try to learn as much as you can from what the teams bring back to the shop and add that to our cars. Being more involved is a positive and I’m excited for that, being able to go to the track again. I’ll have to learn the stage-racing side of it, and I’m looking forward to that challenge.”

Bumgarner comes to the No. 1 team a season after Annett set a career high in top-10 finishes with 22, three better than the previous mark of 19 set in 2019. The latter season also included the Iowa driver’s first career NXS victory at Daytona International Speedway in the season opener.

The 2020 season was one of steady consistency for the No. 1 team, as Annett challenged for victories at both Daytona and Talladega in the stretch run and had a second-place finish taken away in post-race inspection at Talladega. In the season finale at Phoenix, Annett earned a season-best fourth-place finish and ended the season ninth in series points.

“Mike is a great addition to our No. 1 Pilot Flying J team,” said Annett. “The respect he has throughout the organization and the sport is second to none. We know him and how he works, and he has been instrumental in the building of our cars as a company. I am looking forward to the 2021 season and continuing our mission to earn another championship for JR Motorsports.”

Further details regarding the No. 1 team at JR Motorsports will be announced at a later date.

Spire Motorsports Names Crew Chiefs for 2021 NASCAR Cup Campaign

Ryan Sparks to Lead No. 7 Team, Kevin Bellicourt to Direct No. 77 Effort

CONCORD, N.C. (December 10, 2020) – Spire Motorsports announced today that Ryan Sparks and Kevin Bellicourt will serve as NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) crew chiefs for the organization’s Nos. 7 and 77 Chevrolet Camaros in 2021.

Sparks, a native of Winston-Salem, N.C., joins Spire Motorsports for the new year and will reunite with driver Corey LaJoie after spending last season as LaJoie’s crew chief at Go Fas Racing. Bellicourt will embark on his first season leading a team on NASCAR’s senior circuit and carries a resume with a rich history of success in both NASCAR’s Camping World Truck Series and K&N Pro Series East.

“Ryan Sparks and Kevin Bellicourt are talented young crew chiefs with the ability to innovate and lead by example,” said Spire Motorsports co-owner T.J. Puchyr. “Both Ryan and Kevin will play key roles in building Spire Motorsports and helping our organization reach its full potential. We don’t expect Rome to be built in a day, but we know those guys are going to surround themselves with people who can elevate our program and take the performance factor to the next level. Jeff (Dickerson) and I have a very high degree of confidence in both of these individuals, their work ethic and ability to lead.”

Prior to last season, Sparks was the race engineer on the No. 3 NCS team at Richard Childress Racing with driver Austin Dillon. Sparks was also Dillon’s race engineer during his 2011 Camping World Truck Series and 2013 NASCAR Xfinity Series championship-winning seasons. In addition to his championship pedigree, the 36-year-old celebrated a host of wins during his 13-year tenure at RCR, including victories in the 2017 Coca-Cola 600 and the 2018 Daytona 500.

“I’m ready for the challenge of building a new team with Spire Motorsports,” offered Sparks. “The leadership team is giving us all the tools we need to be successful. I’m also excited to continue working with Corey (LaJoie) and build on the foundation we created last season. We all have the same goal of positioning ourselves to compete for wins. I believe we’re headed in the right direction.”

“Ryan Sparks is the right guy to build this program,” stated LaJoie. “We had some great cars last year, so I’m excited to see what he can do at Spire Motorsports with even more tools at his fingertips.”

Bellicourt first found success as a crew chief in 2015 by leading William Byron to the K&N Pro Series East Championship. The following year, the Daytona Beach, Fla., native was paired with Ben Rhodes at Thorsport Racing before making the jump to GMS Racing for the 2017 season where he logged three wins with driver Justin Haley. Bellicourt spent the last two years with Bill McAnally Racing where he led Derek Kraus to a trio of top fives, 13 top 10s and a 10th-place finish in the season-ending 2020 Camping World Truck Series championship point standings.

“I’m extremely thankful for the opportunity to lead the No. 77 team here at Spire Motorsports,” said Bellicourt. “We are building something exciting and to be part of it from the very beginning is going to be really rewarding. NASCAR Cup Series racing is some of the most difficult competition in the world but I’m confident in my abilities and ready for the challenge of competing at this level.”

The 2021 season rolls off in just over two months with the Great American Race at Daytona International Speedway. The 63rd running of the Daytona 500 will be televised live on FOX, Sunday, February 14, 2021. The first of 36 races on next season’s NCS schedule will be broadcast live on the Motor Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

Can you follow NASCAR results and positions live online?

Photo by Rachel Schuoler for SpeedwayMedia.com.

NASCAR Motorsport is hugely popular in the United States of America, with it having a rather huge popularity amongst many in the southern states of the country.

Due to its popularity, there has also been a growing betting market on the sport, with many looking to get in on the high-octane action that each race can provide. With a plethora of different things that can happen in a race, whilst there are many meetings across the whole year, it should be no surprise that many bettors find it a great sport to place a wager on.

However, when placing a bet on the action, many will want to remain up to date with what is happening, just as they would when they place a bet on other American sports such as American Football, Baseball, Basketball and Ice Hockey, for example.

Can NASCAR results be followed live?

But, can bettors follow those results and the positions in which race drivers are in whilst the action is happening live online?

Indeed, the NASCAR website is a great option in which bettors can access and use to find minute-by-minute updates of the race in progress, as well the full race calendar for the year and detailed information on drivers, although it must be said there are not too many other great options available.

Naturally, there are also some social media sites such as Twitter that can help to provide some real-time updates as well, but there are some improvements that can still be made to help potentially attract new bettors to this ever-growing market.

For example, sportsbooks and betting operators should look to provide punters with the ability to watch the action live on their pages, thus giving bettors a top-class betting experience as they can look to place in-play bets on the action.

In the future, we hope that more sites like Oddspedia add NASCAR betting and live results on their pages and popularize it even more, as this will surely only help to add the sport to the gambling map and potentially draw in new fans to this epic motor racing sport.

Are there enough markets available to justify NASCAR being followed live?

It could be argued that there are not enough betting markets available for the sport, with three of the main markets available in NASCAR typically designed regarding the finishing result of the race or the championship.

These available bets include the Futures bet – which will see bettors place a bet on the driver that they believe will win the entire competition from the beginning or the early stages of the season; the outright bet – which will see a bet placed on which driver will win the race meeting that is happening in the immediate future; and the head-to-head which will see gamblers look to predict which driver will come out on top from a pairing that has been selected by the bookmaker.

Some bookmakers do offer Prop Bets

However, there are some online sportsbooks that are starting to provide bettors with the chance of placing wagers on Prop Bets. These bets do not generally have anything to do with the end result of the race, but they can make things even more interesting.

Some of the most popular prop bets include:

Who will lead the most laps?

Which manufacturer will win?

How many caution flags?

How many racers will finish?

All of these are props that a lot of sportsbooks will offer at the time of a race.

For prop bets involving numbers, the book will give an over/under to pick between or provide specific choices with different odds for each.
