AirPower Foundation Joins Niece Motorsports, Trevor Bayne for Races at Texas and Phoenix

STATESVILLE, N.C. (Oct. 19, 2020) – The AirPower Foundation will join Niece Motorsports and Trevor Bayne as the primary partner at Texas Motor Speedway on October 25 and again at Phoenix Raceway in the season finale on November 6.

“Texas Motor Speedway has produced a lot of memories for me, including my first Cup start and my first XFINITY win,” said Bayne.  “I’m proud to have the AirPower Foundation on the truck for my first Gander Truck Series start at the track.  Our military and their families make such a sacrifice to defend and protect us, which is why I’m so thankful to be partnering with an organization that helps to take care of and support them.”

The AirPower Foundation was established by the nation’s oldest civilian military support organization.

“The AirPower Foundation is honored to have this opportunity to be the primary partner with Niece Motorsports and Trevor Bayne for the races in Texas and Phoenix,” said Sid Eppes, Chairman of the AirPower Foundation.  “These races will allow us to reach a very large audience to inform the public of the work we do, and the critical need for funding to further assist with the numerous requests we receive every day for assistance from the over 72 organizations we support annually across the country.  We sincerely thank Trevor Bayne for all his support, and we thank Al Niece for his service and his continued support of all who serve.”

Since its formation in 1999, the AirPower Foundation provides funding for programs dedicated to supporting active duty military, veterans, and their families.  AirPower also supports projects to assist wounded warriors, ill or injured service members, our GoldStar families of the fallen, veterans of previous wars and educational projects to make sure the next generation understands the honor and sacrifice of serving our country. AirPower is the only organization authorized by the Vietnam POW organization NAMPOW to support them.

“I’m thrilled for the AirPower Foundation to come on board with Trevor and our team,” said team owner Al Niece.  “Our military is near and dear to me, having served in the United States Marine Corps.  It means a lot to me to have an organization that supports our military members and their families on one of our trucks, especially at Texas and in Phoenix before Veteran’s Day.”

Niece served in the United States Marine Corps, honorably serving the United States, and deploying to Vietnam.

Bayne, a Daytona 500 Champion, made his return to NASCAR racing earlier this season, putting together several strong runs and contending for the win at Talladega Superspeedway, in just his fourth NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series (NGROTS) start.

While Bayne is relatively new to the NGROTS, he has no shortage of experience behind the wheel at Texas and Phoenix in NASCAR’s top-two series.

The Tennessee-native has 17 NASCAR Cup Series starts at the 1.5-mile track, in addition to nine NASCAR XFINITY Series starts, with a victory coming in 2011.

Bayne also has eight NASCAR Cup Series starts at Phoenix Raceway and 10 NASCAR XFINITY Series starts, where he has earned one top-five and six top-10 finishes.

The No. 45 AirPower Foundation Chevrolet will take the green flag at Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday, October 25 at 12 p.m. ET.  The 147-lap race will air live on FoxSports1, MRN Radio and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

Meyer Shank Racing Ready for a Strong INDYCAR Season Finale in St. Petersburg

#60: Jack Harvey, Meyer Shank Racing Honda

Pataskala, Ohio (19 October 2020) – Meyer Shank Racing and Jack Harvey are aiming to make a strong finish to the 2020 IndyCar season at the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on Sunday (2:30pm ET, NBC) as the team completes its first full-season NTT INDYCAR Series campaign.

Returning back to the site of the originally scheduled IndyCar Series opening round – which was canceled last minute in March due to COVID-19 – Meyer Shank Racing is looking forward to the first, and only, street course event in 2020.

Harvey will be making his third start on the Streets of St. Petersburg this weekend, having debuted at the track with MSR in 2018. A cut tire ended his race early, but he came back stronger in 2019 and he netted his best qualifying run at that point (7th) and went on to score his first-ever IndyCar top 10 finish.

“I’m really excited to get back to St. Pete, shall we say,” said Harvey. “It’s such a shame that we didn’t get to race there in March, but I’m really thrilled that we can have it as a season finale instead of a season opener. I hope it’s a really great weekend for us. We’ve had some great momentum and consistency so hopefully we can have a solid result to end the season on a high note.”

Harvey’s first full season campaign has seen him demonstrate impressive pace in qualifying with two front row starting positions in 2020. Despite racing on several tracks that were new to him this year, he has also shown speed at race time.

The Briton has had five top ten finishes in 2020 with a best finish of sixth at the Harvest Grand Prix last month. Some unfortunate racing luck has kept those promising qualifying outings from converting into a return to the IndyCar podium for Harvey so far, but he will look to close the year out on a strong note in the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg and move up from 13th in the IndyCar points standings.

Meyer Shank Racing’s Season at a Glance:

Genesys 300 – Texas Motor Speedway:
Start: 21
Finish: 16

After the 2020 IndyCar season was delayed three months due to COVID-19, MSR and Harvey picked the season back up and made their debut at Texas Motor Speedway in June. Having never driven the high-speed, high intensity, 1.5-mile oval, Harvey was tasked with learning as quickly as possible for the single-day event.

A track that has frequently claimed many competitors into the wall, Texas Motor Speedway treated Harvey well. After starting 21st, Harvey made up five position to finish 16th.

GMR Grand Prix – Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course:
Start: 2
Finish: 17

It was a highly anticipated race weekend to return to the site where Harvey scored his first IndyCar podium in 2019. The IMS Road Course has highlighted Harvey’s growth and pace, and once again proved that he is a top contender in IndyCar.

Quick pace right out of the gate saw Harvey nearly score his first IndyCar pole position, but just two-tenths shy, Harvey made his first front row start. The race was playing out in Harvey’s favor as he ran in podium contention and led his first official laps in IndyCar. Unfortunately, just as Harvey was set to make his second stop of the race, a yellow flag was deployed which closed pit lane and forced the team to alter strategy. Harvey ultimately finished 17th.

Rev Group Grand Prix – Road America:
Race One Race Two
Start: 2 Start: 9
Finish: 23 Finish: 17

The first double header of the season brought the team to Road America. Harvey’s pace from IMS translated to the nearly 4.0-mile circuit in Wisconsin. Qualifying second for Race 1, Harvey was eager to once again make a run to the podium. With luck once again not on Harvey’s side, he was forced to retire early with a brake issue.

Starting from ninth for Race 2 of the weekend gave Harvey another opportunity to make a run to the front. It was just a few feet after the green flag that Harvey was struck from behind going into Turn 1 which prevented the Briton from moving through the field. Harvey finish 17th.

Iowa IndyCar 250s – Iowa Speedway:
Race One Race Two
Start: 9 Start: 6
Finish: 7 Finish: 7

Another double header race weekend was staged at Iowa Speedway. Aside from the IMS oval, Iowa Speedway was another oval on the IndyCar schedule that Harvey had previous experience while competing in Indy Lights competition.

The 0.875-mile ‘bull ring’ saw Harvey qualify for Race 1 in ninth and then move on to qualifying sixth for Race 2. Harvey brought home a pair of seventh place finishes in the two 90-minute races – bringing the MSR team back on track to consistently finish in the top 10.

Indianapolis 500 – Indianapolis Motor Speedway:
Start: 20
Finish: 9

In addition to the many changes the 2020 season presented MSR with, the Indianapolis 500 was the first 500-mile event to be held without fans and in the Month of August. Making his fourth start at the iconic event, Harvey made a qualifying run which set him 20th in the 33 car field.

Determined to make his best finish to date, Harvey and the team were able to use strategy, pace and quick pit stops to advance 11 positions to finish ninth.

Bommarito Automotive Group 500 – World Wide Technology Raceway:
Race One Race Two
Start: 7 Start: 5
Finish: 11 Finish: 13

Making another top ten race start (7th) for Race 1 at WWTR, Harvey was on the fast track to make his first top five finish of the season. The race saw Harvey run in the front of the field with the MSR crew performing one of its fastest pit stops to date. But a caution midway through the race which was called for the threat of rain – which never came to fruition – forced the team to reorganize its strategy and claw its way back to an 11th place finish.

Qualifying for Race 2 fifth was promising for Harvey as he hoped to turn his luck around for Race 2. Unfortunately, Harvey was unable to make his way through the field despite several strategy calls to do so – Harvey crossed the line 13th.

Honda Indy 200 – Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course:
Race One Race Two
Start: 5 Start: 19
Finish: 7 Finish: 12

Racing at his home track for the third IndyCar season in a row, MSR was determined to get a good result in front of its home crowd. A big improvement on day one saw Harvey make a run to fifth in qualifying for Race 1. A bold strategy to start on alternate tires for Race 1 benefitted Harvey as he raced to seventh – his fourth top ten finish of the season.

New track conditions presented Harvey with a wet track surface for qualifying for Race 2. Starting on the 10th row Harvey hoped to add to his top ten finish streak, but came up just short to finish 12th.

INDYCAR Harvest Grand Prix – Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course:
Race One Race Two
Start: 6 Start: 7
Finish: 8 Finish: 6

Meyer Shank Racing kicked off race week with several exciting announcements. First, the team broke ground on its new 46,000 sq. ft. Shop that’s due to be completed next year.

MSR also announced a minority investment made by Liberty Media which is attributed to the Formula One Group. With 2021 looking bright for MSR, the team was ready to kick off its third race weekend at IMS.

The weekend started off with Harvey making his fifth appearance in the Firestone Fast Six for Race 1. Finishing eighth in Race 1 was a solid starting point heading into the final race on Sunday. Starting from seventh on the grid for Race 2, Harvey captured his sixth top ten finish, coming home sixth at IMS.

Justin Haley Returning to Kaulig Racing in 2021

Justin Haley

Justin Haley to Pilot the No. 11 Chevrolet for 2021 NASCAR Xfinity Series Season

(LEXINGTON, N.C.) October 19, 2020 – Kaulig Racing is thrilled to announce that Justin Haley will return to the No. 11 Chevrolet for the 2021 NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) season.

Haley, who originally signed on for a two-year deal with Kaulig Racing beginning in 2019, has signed a one-year extension, and will be the first driver to return for a third season with the team.

“I’d first like to thank LeafFilter Gutter Protection, Matt Kaulig, Chris Rice and everyone at Kaulig Racing for an amazing partnership the past two years,” said Haley. “We’ve grown as a team, an organization, and most importantly, as a family. I feel super blessed to have gotten the call from Kaulig Racing after my second win at Talladega that they wanted me back in 2021. They have believed in me since day one, and have stuck with me through the highs and lows. I’m extremely humbled to keep this strong partnership going into 2021 and continue trophy hunting!”

Before Haley joined the team in 2019, Kaulig Racing recorded 22 top 10’s and one top-five finish from 2016-2018. So far, Haley has earned three wins, 38 top 10’s and 13 top five-finishes for Kaulig Racing in the No. 11 Chevrolet.

Haley also joined the likes of Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr. as a driver to win three superspeedway races in-a-row following his win at Talladega Superspeedway earlier this month. The 21-year-old has since become one of 34 drivers, and the second youngest, to record a win in all three of NASCAR’s top-tier series.

“To have Justin Haley come back for a third year with us is beyond amazing for our team!” Said Matt Kaulig, owner of Kaulig Racing. “Everyone at Kaulig Racing loves Justin, and it is safe to say he has become an integral part of our family. Justin has only helped our program grow, and the proof is in the stats! I’m looking forward to many more wins and trophies with Justin in 2021.”

Haley and the team also made history together when they entered their first Daytona 500, the first-ever NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) race for Kaulig Racing, in February of 2020.

“Having Justin Haley return to Kaulig Racing for the 2021 season is truly special to me,” said President of Kaulig Racing, Chris Rice. “I had my eye on Justin for a while before he came to Kaulig Racing and knew there was something special about this kid. I was able to be a part of handpicking him for the No. 11 car, and there has not been one day that I have regretted that decision. I know he will do big things in 2021 for Kaulig Racing.”

Haley will pilot the No. 11 Chevrolet for the 2021 NXS season beginning at Daytona International Speedway. Partner announcements for the No. 11 Chevrolet in 2021 still to come at a later date.

Metal Detector on Racetrack: Why We All Need One

While the connection between the two activities of metal detecting and auto racing is not that obvious. In fact, every race fan should have one. Metal detectors are not very simple to use, but they are worth some time and effort; mastering metal detecting will take time, but the result is a new skill that can save the day in many cases.

Metal detectors detect things both on the surface, hidden in the grass or dirt, and on considerable depth. There are plenty of brands, and different types of metal detecting machines; if you want a positive user experience, consider only the best metal detectors. Now, you are probably wondering why and how a race fan should use a metal detector? Well, you may be surprised how that device can make your life easier.

Find What Was Lost

Car parts can be spread all over the racetrack due to contact and they fall off or they can be knocked off, during the race. Pieces can be buried in grass or dirt, and if the racetrack is huge, the task becomes close to impossible if you need to find something that fell off. And this is where a metal detector comes to the rescue! You don’t have to try and find the pieces, the machine will find them for you, faster, and more efficiently.

The same can be said about camping places. Many people mistakenly leave their belongings, including expensive spares, instruments, and other stuff, on their camping place, and don’t notice the thing is missing until they are back home. If you have a metal detector, you can swipe around the camping place after everything is packed, and see if anything was left in the grass including your smartphone!

Cool Old Stuff

Now, if you are a true automobile fan, there is another cool activity you can pursue with a metal detector. Searching on and around some old race tracks can bring some unexpected pieces, like rare pieces, old emblems, and car license plates, etc. You can spot even some really valuable pieces, like retro car elements, or even personal belongings of drivers who mastered those old tracks decades ago.

Experienced metal detectorists find amazing things on such locations like old racing tracks, sometimes, they spot even valuable stuff they can sell. If you are skillful with your metal detecting machine, maybe this perspective will add another twist to your love for cars and racing. Eventually, all those old tracks are a huge part of automobile history and legacy. Isn’t that exciting?

Final Thoughts

Getting a metal detector for personal use is not complicated, and most of the detectors are easy to transport. They definitely need some practice, but you will be sure that all your metal stuff will be in order, and nothing will be left behind.

KANSAS CITY, KS – October 19, 2020 – Joey Logano, won the Hollywood Casino 400 on Sunday, securing a spot in the NASCAR Cup Series Championship 4 for Team Penske and Ford Performance. Chase Briscoe, from Stewart-Haas Racing, also secured a spot in the NASCAR Xfinity Series Championship 4 by winning the Kansas Lottery 300 at Kansas Speedway on Saturday.

“A great weekend for Ford Performance, Team Penske, and Stewart-Haas Racing. Congratulations to Joey, Paul, Chase and Richard for their wins at Kansas. To be locked into the Championship 4 for both series at the beginning of the Round of 8 is awesome,” said Doug Yates, President and CEO of Roush Yates Engines. “Joey was able to take advantage of his experience and fast pit crew! And to see Chase mature as driver, collect his ninth win in a single season, is a testament to his passion and character for our great sport.”

Kevin Harvick in the No. 4 Ford Mustang led three times for a race high 85-laps, but a late race caution shuffled up the field. It was the quick work of the No. 22 Team Penske pit crew, that provided the lead for Logano during the restart on lap 223. Logano led a total of 47 laps and was able to hold off a hard charging Harvick to win by .312 of a second.

“What an amazing team this Shell Pennzoil team is,” Logano commented. “Pit stops put us in position and got us the lead. We are going to Phoenix and racing for a championship again. Heck Yeah!”

Harvick finished P2 while Team Penske teammates Brad Keselowski finished P4 and Ryan Blaney P7 and Wood Brothers Racing’s, Matt DiBenedetto finished P12. With two races to go before the Championship, all three Ford Performance Playoff drivers are currently in the top four by wins or points.

Briscoe, driving the No. 98 Ford Performance Racing School Mustang, dominated the Xfinity Series race by sweeping both stages and leading 159 laps out of the 200-lap race. During a late race caution, Briscoe re-started mid-pack and muscled his way through the field to finish 1.199 seconds ahead of second place. Briscoe’s ninth win of the year is the highest numbers of wins for a Ford driver in the Xfinity Series.

During his victory lane interview, Briscoe commented, “I am super happy to be locked into Phoenix. It is going to be a lot less stressful the next two weeks. I can’t say enough to everybody at Stewart-Haas Racing. This Ford Performance Racing School Mustang was lights out. It has been an unbelievable year, but we have three more to go.”

Both Chase and Ford Performance teammate, Austin Cindric are currently in position to advance to the final Championship 4.

The Ford Mustangs of Multimatic Motorsports and PF Racing raced at Road Atlanta on Friday in the Fox Factory 120 in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Series. PF Racing finished P8 while Multimatic finished P18 due to an early race incident.

The NASCAR Playoffs head to Texas Motor Speedway this weekend for the second race in the Round of 8. The next race for the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenges Series is at Laguna Seca.

DiBenedetto Finishes 12th at Kansas

Matt DiBenedetto and the No. 21 Menards/Wrangler RIGGS team rallied from some early struggles in Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway to score Stage points in the second Stage and post a 12th-place finish at the end.

DiBenedetto earned the 18th starting spot for Sunday’s race and was on the move early on, moving to 13th place after just eight laps.

He fell back for the remainder of the first Stage and finished that 80-lap segment outside the top 20. A leaking left rear tire was found to be the culprit, but not before adjustments had been made to compensate for the ill-handling condition.

Once the Menards/Wrangler RIGGS team had the chance to readjust the No. 21 Mustang, DiBenedetto again began to work his way forward.

As the leaders began to make green-flag pit stops around Lap 125, crew chief Greg Erwin made the call to run long on that segment.

DiBenedetto took the lead on Lap 133 and was out front when the caution flag flew for a spin by Matt Kenseth.

That allowed DiBenedetto, who led a total of 12 laps, to make that stop under the caution. That led to a seventh-place finish in the second Stage, which was worth four bonus points.

In the third and final segment of the race, DiBenedetto ran either in the top 10 or just outside that group, eventually finishing 12th in a race won by his fellow Ford driver Joey Logano, who now will race for the championship on Nov. 8 at Phoenix Raceway, where he won earlier this season.

“We just didn’t have the speed we needed,” DiBenedetto said. “We were a little off all day, but we recovered and made a fairly solid day out of it.”

He said the leaking tire early in the race was one of the team’s main challenges.

“It threw us for a loop and kind of put us behind for a while,” he said. “It was a little bit of a setback.”

Eddie Wood said that all-in-all it was a good day at the race.

“I’m happy for Joey and Team Penske to have earned a spot in the championship round,” he said. “And although we didn’t finish in the top five or top 10 like you always want to do, it was a good day for us.

“Greg and the crew did a great job, and Matt hung tough all day even though they never got the car where he felt comfortable.

“And Greg’s call to run long near the end of Stage Two worked out even better than he thought it might.”

DiBenedetto and the Wood Brothers team remain in 15th place in the points standings heading into next Sunday’s Autotrader 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.

Four Takeaways from the NASCAR Truck Series race at Kansas

Chandler Smith and Ben Rhodes lead the field to start the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series Clean Harbors 200 at Kansas Speedway on October 17, 2020. Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images.

Following a one-week hiatus, the NASCAR Gander RV and Outdoors Truck Series returned to action Saturday afternoon on a windy day at Kansas Speedway.

The Clean Harbors 200 was the opening round for the Round of 8 Playoffs and we already know one driver who will be in the Championship 4 at Phoenix, that being Brett Moffitt. Moffitt will be looking for the second Truck Series championship of his career.

The focus of the race was on Moffitt and the playoff drivers but we will also discuss other takeaways after the 20th race of the 2020 Truck Series season.

  1. Hailie Deegan Full-Time In 2021 – It was only a matter of time before Deegan would eventually make her way up the ladder in one of NASCAR’s three touring brands. The California native competed in her first Truck Series start Saturday afternoon, driving in the No. 17 DGR-Crosley Ford F-150 and coming home to a 16th place finish, one lap down. During the race, Ford Performance had announced that their developmental driver, Deegan, will be going full-time in the Truck Series next year starting at Daytona. Deegan just wrapped up her first full season in the ARCA Menards Series, earning four top fives and 17 Top 10 finishes while finishing third in points. However, the Truck Series could present a learning curve for Deegan in her first season. Only time will tell how well she adjusts.
  2. Timothy Peters Returns – With Stewart Friesen out of the race in the No. 52 Halmar team (competing in a dirt race), Truck Series ace Timothy Peters piloted the No. 52 on Saturday afternoon. Peters made his first start since Talladega last year driving for Joe Nemechek’s team. The Providence, North Carolina native finished a respectable seventh place after starting 28th. Peters seems to be making one-off and part-time efforts over the last couple of years, but if a competitive ride were to open up for him, it seems likely that a team owner would want Peters as part of their organization. Peters has 11 Truck Series wins to his credit and was a runner-up for the championship in 2012 driving for the now-defunct Red Horse Racing team.
  3. Niece Motorsports Announces James Buescher Return – Speaking of returns, Niece Motorsports announced last week that former Truck Series driver and 2012 series champion James Buescher is slated for a return race at Texas Motor Speedway this Sunday. Buescher’s last series start came five years ago in 2015, driving the No. 31 Bob Newberry entry at Martinsville where he finished seventh after starting 15th.
  4. Tyler Hill Earns Best Season Finish – Tyler Hill drove the No. 56 Hill Motorsports team truck owned by his brother Timmy Hill to a 14th place finish Saturday. The finish marked Tyler’s best so far this season with his previous best coming at Las Vegas where he finished 17th.

Don Schumacher Racing continued their winning ways in the Funny Car division Sunday afternoon by scoring their 12th consecutive victory by a Don Schumacher entry when No. 6 qualifier Jack Beckman ousted his teammate Matt Hagan in the final.

Beckman defeated Hagan going 328.46 mph and 3.908 seconds to Hagan’s 324.20 mph and 3.943 ET. The victory was Beckman’s third of the season and the 33rd of his career. In addition, the victory was also Beckman’s first at the Texas Motorplex.

“We have a phenomenal car,” Beckman said. “I had a good feeling all day today and I think our car is as good as any car out there every time we go out there. I’ve won Indy, I’ve won Pomona and a lot of the major races, but Dallas, since I came here in 1986 to spectate at the very first national event here, was one I would have loved to win. I had 14 shots at it before I finally closed the deal. To have your name listed as the first (to win a Camping World Wally), that can never be taken away from you and it’s just awesome.”

Unfortunately for Hagan, he had to settle for a second-place finish, which was the 29th runner-up of his Funny Car career.

“All-and-all another really good day here at Dallas for this Pennzoil/Mopar team. Jack Beckman just had a little better day. They have a great race car, but we have a great race car too. We’ve been keeping pace and we’re going to keep doing our thing for the next two races and see how this thing plays out. I’m super excited we get to do it again in a few days at Houston next weekend. We have a lot of momentum. The team is working great. The guys are doing a great job. We just have a little more work to do.”

In the Top Fuel division, father and son, Steve and Billy Torrence, once again squared off with each other. Prior to getting to the finals, Steve defeated Shawn Langdon in the semis, while Billy got the victory beating Doug Kalitta when Kalitta ended up smoking the tires. Steve had a much quicker reaction time of .058 to Billy’s .076, and winning with an ET of 3.716 seconds, 328.76 mph to score his 40th career win as a Top Fuel competitor, the fourth win of the season. His dad Billy had to settle for his second runner-up of the year.

“That was huge,” admitted the younger Torrence, “My dad was a little late (reacting to the starting signal). I was, too (against Shawn Langdon). But those bad-to-the-bone Capco Boys pulled it out (with better performing race cars). I’m just thankful to the good Lord that we’re out here and we can do this. We’re having a blast.”

Torrence was able to increase his championship points by 51 over Kalitta.

“I’ve said it multiple times – Doug Kalitta is probably the best driver who never won the championship,” Torrence said. “I have a ton of respect for him and for that team and I think that’s why they bring out the best in us.”

Unlike the weather conditions in St. Louis a few weeks ago, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle were able to finish all of their rounds at the Fall Nationals Sunday afternoon. Matt Hartford in the Total Seal Pistons Rings Chevrolet Camaro picked up his first win of the 2020 season. Hartford’s victory came against Greg Anderson, as Hartford edged Anderson with an ET of 6.625 and 206.39 mph. The ET and mph were slower than Anderson’s 6.588 and 207.94 mph, but the hole shot ultimately gave the victory to Hartford. Hartford went .018 off the line, as Anderson could only manage .066 reaction time. He reached the finals by getting the holeshot against Enders as well. The FallNationals victory was Hartford’s third of his NHRA Pro Stock career.

“The final was big because I’m now at three wins, but really the semifinal run was what set it apart for us,” Hartford said. “Erica (Enders) is just so dominant on the tree and I just decided I was going to take my time, take a couple deep breaths and not be in a hurry. There was a lot on the line and to come back in the final round and win, it’s incredible to have another Wally. To hold the first ever Camping World Wally in Pro Stock, that never gets forgotten. For me, it’s just incredible. It wasn’t an easy road today, but we’ve had a good car all year long. To have the fans out here supporting us, it was great.”

Anderson will have to wait for the Houston Nationals next weekend if he wants win No. 64 of his career.

“My guys did a great job, and they saved my bacon all day long,” said Anderson, who moved up to the No. 5 position in the Pro Stock points with his performance. “They tried again in the final and I dropped the ball. I have to figure out what I’m doing wrong. I’m not a guy who cuts a .060 light. I’m doing something wrong, I just don’t know what yet. That’s what I’m going to be working on before we get to Houston next week, because if I can get that figured out, we’re going to win.”

Finally, in the Pro Stock Motorcycle division, Jerry Savoie won for the 13th time in his NHRA career. Savoie defeated rider and competitor Jerry Gladstone to earn his first victory of the 2020 NHRA season. Savoie won with an ET of 6.910 seconds and 191.16 mph to Gladstone’s 7.005 and 192.69 mph. Like Hartford’s victory, Savoie got the holeshot by having a reaction time of .050 to Galdestone’s .072 to give him the victory.

“There’s just something about Texas,” Savoie said. “To come here and be in the finals six times and win three, it’s just awesome and a great deal. We’ve really been struggling and (crew chief) Tim (Kulungian) has been working really hard at the shop. We didn’t have the fastest bike today, but luck was on our side and we just out-raced them.”

TEAM CHEVY NOTES AND QUOTES (INCLUDING ALEX BOWMAN AND CHASE ELLIOTT PRESS CONFERENCE TRANSCRIPTS):
ALEX BOWMAN, NO. 88 CHEVYGOODS.COM/TRUCK HERO CAMARO ZL1 1LE – Finished 3rd
“It seemed like we needed a really long run there at the end. We were pretty free all day and snugged it up and snugged it up. We got our Truck Hero Camaro running a little better but didn’t really have much right rear grip. There at the end, just running wide open and it finally came back to us. I kind of burnt the tires off of it to try to get there in the first place. It is a bummer. I messed up coming to two (laps) to go and cost us any chance that we had. It is still a really good day for us. Thanks to everybody at Hendrick Motorsports. We are building great Camaros, just came up a little short today.”

CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 9 NAPA AUTO PARTS CAMARO ZL1 1LE – Finished 6th
WHAT A CRAZY DAY FOR CHASE ELLIOTT. IT WINDS UP BEING A SIXTH-PLACE FINISH, BUT I WANT TO TALK ABOUT ALL THE RADIO ISSUES ALL DAY LONG. YOU MUST MENTALLY BE FRIED AFTER THAT RACE. HOW BAD DID IT GET AND HOW MUCH OF A DISTRACTION WAS THAT, CHASE?
“Yeah, it wasn’t a massive deal. The good news was they could hear me, I just couldn’t hear them once we went green. Once we kind of had the situation understood, that they could hear me and I just couldn’t hear them, that helped, obviously. And then from there, I just kind of knew what to expect. I was just trying to pay attention to lap count and when everybody else was going to start pitting or not. But I don’t think it ultimately hindered our performance at all.”

“We had a pretty fast NAPA Camaro. I felt like we fired off well. Lost a little track position there in that middle stage and it was just tough to get a big chunk of it back in a hurry. Had a bad restart there, fell back too far, and it just took me a long time to kind of claw back up through there. We’ve got two more weeks and we’ll try to go get them in Texas.”

MINUS EIGHT GOING INTO TEXAS – I KNOW THAT’S A RACETRACK WHERE YOU GUYS HAVE STRUGGLE IN THE PAST. BUT MARTINSVILLE AT THE END OF THIS ROUND, CHASE, HOW DO YOU ASSESS THE NEXT TWO TRACKS?
“I’m looking forward to both of them. Like I’ve been saying all week, I feel like you can’t have bad tracks and expect to win a championship. You need to have a shot to win every week and I believe in that a lot. We’ll go to Texas, give it our best shot to go win, and same at Martinsville. Hopefully, we’re still alive come Phoenix.”

WILLIAM BYRON, NO. 24 HENDRICKCARS.COM CAMARO ZL1 1LE – Finished 8th
“It was a good day for us by the end there. We had a couple things happen early on that we had to recover from. We took two tires early and fell back really far in the field and that was tough. We rebounded from that though and got our car tightened up which we needed. We were just too loose for the majority of the day. By the end our car was really fast and we could have ran around fifth to seventh-place and ended up finishing eighth. That’s a good day for us. We’re putting together solid runs and we just need to keep that going as the year ends.”

BUBBA WALLACE, NO. 43 CASH APP CAMARO ZL1 1LE – Finished 18th
“A pretty uneventful day for us. That was the best car we’ve had at a 1.5-mile track in a really long time. We did our homework. The guys did a really good job getting our No. 43 Richard Petty Motorsports Cash App Camaro ZL1 1LE kind of where we needed it all day. We started out really good and maintained that. We got a little behind on that last pit stop – a little on the tight side. But the pit crew was beyond flawless today, so super proud of them. Great effort for us for Kansas Speedway – come out of there with a good run and learned a lot heading into Texas Motor Speedway. We’ll see what we’ve got.”

TY DILLON, NO. 13 GEICO CAMARO ZL1 1LE – Finished 24th
“Our GEICO Camaro ZL1 1LE was a lot better there at the end of the race. We just didn’t have the speed overall that we needed with this package. You have to have so much downforce in the car to make up any ground on the track. Our Germain Racing team never gives up and even though the timing of a couple cautions didn’t go our way, we battled back to finish 24th. We have three races left together and our focus now shifts to Texas next week.”

TYLER REDDICK, NO. 8 CATERPILLAR CAMARO ZL1 1LE – Finished 25th
“We had good speed in our No. 8 Caterpillar Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE at Kansas Speedway today. It was hard at times to get a feel on the handling of our car since it felt like it would take about seven to eight laps for the front tires to come in today, but we did a better job adjusting throughout the race this time than during our first trip to Kansas earlier this year. It felt like for most the day I was snug on entry to the corners but then would become loose on center and exit, so a lot of our focus was on figuring out what changes would help me the most overall. We just have a couple other things to continue to work on as a team to put ourselves in better contention at these races. I thought maybe I had a right front tire coming down a couple laps before I got into the wall towards the end of Stage 3, but it was tough to tell if that is what was happening in that moment, so that’s a feeling I’ll definitely put in my notebook and learn from. We still have three more opportunities left this year to finish out my rookie season strong, and I’m really looking forward to getting to Texas Motor Speedway next week to try to finish one spot better than we did in July.”

KURT BUSCH, NO. 1 MONSTER ENERGY CAMARO ZL1 1LE – Sidelined by engine failure on lap 197; Finished 38th
TOUGH WAY TO END IT FOR KURT BUSCH HERE AT KANSAS. THEY HAD THE SPEEDING PENALTY EARLIER. CAME BACK FROM THAT AND WAS RUNNING ALMOST TOP-FIVE THERE. KURT, ANY INDICATION BEFORE THAT? IT SEEMED LIKE IT HAPPENED ALL OF A SUDDEN THAT THE ENGINE STARTED TO GO.
“Yeah, usually there’s no warning. Everything is so buttoned up these days in the engine department. I haven’t seen an engine problem in years. No fault of anybody at Hendrick engines. We’re running hard here. We were running top-five and there’s a ton of RPM down the front-straightaway with the tail wind. We were right in the mix. We were doing the deal. I just couldn’t quite clear some guys to get into that top-three or four and then our car would come back to us on the long run after about lap 30.”

“It’s a shame for everybody at Chip Ganassi Racing. Having an engine failure in the Playoffs – it’s just like a huge parachute that slows you up. We’ll pack that parachute up, throw it away and we’ll go to Texas to win. We knew we were going to have to win either here or Texas. Martinsville we have a shot at it, too. The odds are stacked against us, but hey, we’re in the top-eight for a reason. I have a great crew chief, Matt McCall, and we’ll bounce back. Thanks to Monster, GEARWRENCH, Chevrolet. It’s just one of those things where you have an engine failure and there’s nothing we can do about it.”

ALEX BOWMAN, NO. 88 CHEVYGOODS.COM/TRUCK HERO CAMARO ZL1 1LE, PRESS CONFERENCE TRANSCRIPT:
THE MODERATOR: We are joined by Alex Bowman, our third‑place finisher. We’ll get right to questions for Alex.

       Q. Are you happy with a top three run, your best run since Darlington, or are you frustrated because you lost points on the cutoff?
ALEX BOWMAN: I'm just here to get top fives because you told me I wasn't getting enough top fives, Bob.
No, I mean, I think it's obviously a really good day for us. We didn't have the car that we hoped to have. We struggled with it quite a bit today. Still got good stage points. Didn't really have the speed we wanted to have.
But our last couple changes really got the car dialed in. We needed a little bit longer run there at the end. I think we were the fastest car, just kind of ran out of laps.
Happy and sad, a little bit bummed we lost points. A little bummed Joey won. That makes my life harder over the next couple weeks. I feel like we had a really good day. I'm really proud of my race team.
A lot of people said we were going to go out early in the Playoffs. We're still here fighting. We're still bringing really fast cars to the racetrack each and every week.

       Q. I'm trying to understand what drivers view about races like today. You had Harvick who had a faster car, couldn't get by Logano because he didn't win the race off of pit road. That's been the package for the last couple years. Have you accepted it and that's how racing is or do you feel like guys still come away with races like that and they're privately saying screw this package? How do drivers view it?
ALEX BOWMAN: I'm just happy I have a job and get to drive racecars for a living.
I think it is somewhat frustrating that it comes down to blocking for an entire run. I think we're all on the same package, right? We're all race car drivers. Most of us would go race lawn mowers if NASCAR said they were switching to lawn mowers next week.
I think for us, we're all just trying to do the best job we can with the package we have to race. That's part of this package. On a cold day like today, it really brings out that element of it. Yeah, I mean, I wish it was easier to pass when you're a faster car. Maybe not easier, but maybe less easy to block.
That's just part of the package. We're all trying to maximize it the way we need to.

       Q. Was there any concern when Kurt Busch's engine went away, since he also has a Hendrick powerplant? Have they been able to use any of the ECR components yet in the cars y'all are using for the Playoffs?
ALEX BOWMAN: Yeah, so I didn't even know the 1 car had an engine issue. That's a bummer for sure. Our engine shop does a great job. Yeah, that's a bummer.
I don't know exactly what parts and pieces we've used or haven't used yet. I know everybody is doing a really good job of working together. Chevrolet is doing an awesome job kind of helping us all work together.
Proud of everybody at the engine shop. I think this week was a step in the right direction. I think we were definitely it seemed a little better on restarts. We're headed in the right direction. Everybody is definitely working really hard.

       Q. Does this team have a little bit of a chip on its shoulder? You say with a smile almost every time you come on, Nobody expects us to be here, nobody thought we would still be here. Is that what fuels this team, kind of at times maybe a lack of respect?
ALEX BOWMAN: Yeah, I use that as a lot of motivation personally. I love it. Honestly, like, if people want to motivate me, just talk crap about me on the Internet. It works pretty well (smiling).
Yeah, I mean, I do think my team is a little bit undervalued. They're one of the best race teams in the garage. They make up for me not being very good at some of these places, give me some pretty great racecars to drive.
Yeah, I mean, I think we definitely have a little bit of a chip on our shoulder. I think those last couple laps go a little bit differently and we could very well be going to Phoenix to race for a championship. I feel like we're right there, right where we need to be. Everybody is doing a really good job.

       Q. How proud are you of the fact that you did make it, are still here with a fighting chance? You didn't hurt yourself today.
ALEX BOWMAN: Yeah, for sure. It's crazy to think about coming in, like, 17 points back and running third, getting stage points, now being 27 points back. That's a little wild.
Yeah, I'm really proud of our race team. The summer was really rough. We were able to switch it on a couple weeks before the Playoffs. Ever since then we've been firing on all cylinders, bringing great racecars to the racetrack, executing really well. Bristol and Talladega we had some issues. Other than that, really, really good each week.
Really proud of my race team.

       Q. You were running up near the top 10 all day, not battling for the lead. What put you over the edge to close in at the end?
ALEX BOWMAN: We were really loose all day honestly. Didn't have a lot of right rear grip. Entry to both ends was really sketchy for the most part. Just had to calm the car down. Couldn't get it into the corner very hard.
We just tightened up and tightened up all day. We finally got it to where I could run about wide open up top, which helped me build a lot of moment and run them down there at the end.
Yeah, just really all day fought rear grip. Finally got the rear grip we needed in the race car at the end. Could have used a little bit more, but we got it much better over the course of the race.

THE MODERATOR: Thank you, Alex, for taking the time to join us. We'll see you at Texas.

ALEX BOWMAN: Thanks. You guys have a good one.

CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 9 NAPA AUTO PARTS CAMARO ZL1 1LE, PRESS CONFERENCE TRANSCRIPT:
WAS YOUR CAR WORSE AT THE END OF THE RACE COMPARED TO THE OPENING STAGE OR WAS IT JUST THE MATTER OF TRACK POSITION?
“I actually thought we got our car back pretty decent there at the end. Obviously, Kevin (Harvick) was very fast and just couldn’t find a way around the No. 22 (Joey Logano). But I thought we were better than we were in the middle stage of the race – I just had a couple bad restarts there just after halfway, fell too far back and it took a long time to get back up where we needed to be.”

WERE YOU CONCERNED AT ALL THAT NASCAR MIGHT MAKE YOU COME IN TO FIX THE RADIOS TO MAKE SURE YOU COULD HEAR YOUR SPOTTER OR DID YOU HAVE ANY SENSE THAT YOU FELT LIKE YOU COULD HEAR ENOUGH OF THEM THAT IT WASN’T AN UNSAFE SITUATION?
“I didn’t think it was unsafe. Honestly, I never even thought about that. Short track dirt racers around the country race with no spotters every weekend. We have both, so I don’t know why we can’t handle it if your radios go bad.”

IN DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCES LIKE THIS, DOES IT MAKE YOU APPRECIATE MORE HAVING CLEAR RADIO COMMUNICATION WITHOUT HAVING TO RELY ON SIGNALS AND ALL THAT?
“Yeah, in certain situations, knowing what we’re doing as far as coming to pit road and things of that nature. But, luckily, I could hear them under caution, I just couldn’t hear them once we went green. We made those green flag pit stops there early in the race and, luckily, that was it. So, it could have been worse.”

YOU MENTIONED THE RESTARTS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RACE. OBVIOUSLY, THESE RESTARTS WERE WILD THROUGHOUT. LOOKING BACK, WHAT KIND OF WENT WRONG OR DIDN’T GO YOUR WAY? I KNOW A LOT OF TIMES, IT’S AS MUCH WHAT SOMEBODY ELSE DOES AS OPPOSED TO WHAT YOU’RE DOING.
“Yeah, I mean it is. Sometimes, you try to get greedy and end up just hurting yourself. I feel like that’s kind of what I did there on a couple of occasions. It’s so hard, sometimes, to have a good run and realize that not doing something with it is going to net you better in a couple of laps. That’s just something I need to do a better job of.”

ALSO, OBVIOUSLY THE STRUGGLES OF LAST YEAR IN THIS ROUND, TO GET A STRONG FINISH, WHAT DOES THIS MEAN, EVEN THOUGH YOU FALL BACK OUT OF A TRANSFER SPOT WITH JOEY (LOGANO) WINNING?
“I think for us, we just have to treat every week like it’s our last chance – like it’s the last race of the year. That’s the best way, I think, we can approach them and I think if you were to ever make the Final Four one day, you’re going to be better prepared for it because you have to go to that last race and likely win. So, I think the more we put ourselves in that position and recognize that now, the better off we’ll be and the better we’ll be prepared.”

DID YOUR TEAM EVER FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS CAUSING THE COMMUNICATION ISSUES. AND, IF SO, WHAT WAS CAUSING IT?
“I’m not sure. They could hear me, I couldn’t hear them, so that kind of tells me it was something with an earplug or something along those lines because the rest of it seemed like it was working fine. But, I don’t know for sure.”
