Photo by John Knittel for SpeedwayMedia.com.

Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) announced a new role and new team for crew chiefs Chris Gabehart and Chris Gayle, respectively, for the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season.

For the upcoming season, Gabehart will be assuming the role as JGR’s Competition Director while Gayle will shift from JGR’s No. 54 Toyota Camry XSE team to the No. 11 Toyota Camry XSE team, where he will be paired with veteran driver Denny Hamlin.

The news comes as both Gabehart and Gayle are coming off their respective roles as crew chiefs for the Nos. 11 and 54 JGR Toyota teams, the latter of which is piloted by driver Ty Gibbs, in the Cup Series.

“We have a lot of pride in the depth of talent we have throughout our organization,” Joe Gibbs, owner and founder of Joe Gibbs Racing, said. “Chris Gabehart will now be an asset across all four of our teams as competition director and we thought it was important to have him transition into his new role immediately. Chris Gayle will bring his own perspective to the 11 team while also maintaining the consistency and continuity they have developed with Denny [Hamlin] over the past several years. While we are still in the process of finalizing the new crew chief for the 54 team, we believe all these moves ultimately make our team stronger as we prepare for 2025.”

Gabehart, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, who graduated from Purdue University with a mechanical engineering degree, made his crew chief debut in the Xfinity Series in 2016, where he was paired with Erik Jones at JGR. The following season, he made his Cup Series crew chief debut on an interim role with Denny Hamlin and the No. 11 Toyota team at Richmond Raceway, where Hamlin finished fifth.

After accumulating a total of nine Xfinity victories between 2016 to 2018, Gabehart was promoted to the Cup Series to serve as a full-time crew chief for Hamlin and the No. 11 team in 2019. Commencing his Cup crew chief career with his first career victory in the 61st running of the Daytona 500, Gabehart and Hamlin would accumulate a total of 22 victories through 209 events (2019-24). In addition to making the Playoffs throughout their six-year journey, they also made the Championship 4 round from 2019 to 2021, where they finished as high as third place in the final standings during the latter season.

Through 209 appearances as a Cup Series crew chief, Gabehart has also recorded 11 poles, 90 top-five results and 120 top-10 results, all while working atop the No. 11 JGR Toyota pit box and paired with Hamlin as he prepares to etch a new chapter with his new role in 2025.

“I am very thankful for the opportunities that Joe Gibbs Racing has continued to provide me for my entire tenure here and cannot say enough about how much I have enjoyed and appreciated my time with Denny and the entire 11 team,” Gabehart said. “They have all taught me so much about not only how to race at the top of the NASCAR Cup Series, but also, how to lead a great group of talented professionals. In my next opportunity, I am as excited as I have ever been to work with all our talented drivers, crew chiefs, teams and partners to help focus all our efforts towards making 2025 one of the best seasons Joe Gibbs Racing has ever had.”

Meanwhile, Gayle, a native of Little Rock Arkansas, and a graduate from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a Mechanical Engineering degree, made his crew chief debut in 2013, where he was paired with Elliott Sadler at JGR in the Xfinity Series. During the season, he made his Cup crew chief debut with Sadler at Kansas Speedway, where Sadler finished 40th.

Four years later, Gayle became a full-time crew chief in the Cup Series for the first time, where he was paired with Erik Jones at Furniture Row Racing. After notching the 2017 Rookie-of-the-Year title, both Gayle and Jones moved back to Joe Gibbs Racing and notched their first Cup career victory at Daytona International Speedway in July. Gayle would continue to work with Jones over the next two seasons, where they won the 2019 Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, before he transitioned back down to the Xfinity Series during his next two years.

After capturing the 2022 Xfinity Series championship with Ty Gibbs, Gayle moved back up to the Cup Series and continued to work with Gibbs as his crew chief in 2023, where Gibbs captured the Rookie-of-the-Year title while piloting the No. 54 JGR Toyota entry. This past season, they qualified for the 2024 Playoffs and finished in 15th place in the final standings on the strengths of two poles, eight top-five results and 12 top-10 results.

DPF Filter: Essential Maintenance and Lifespan Insights

Diesel particulate filters (DPFs) have become indispensable components in modern diesel engines, playing a crucial role in reducing harmful emissions. These devices capture and remove soot and ash from the exhaust stream, thereby helping vehicles meet stringent environmental standards. Understanding how a DPF filter works and its importance can save vehicle owners from headaches related to engine performance and potential regulatory fines.

Despite their benefits, DPF filters can pose maintenance challenges, especially if not properly managed. Blockages can occur if the filters aren’t cleaned regularly, leading to increased fuel consumption and potential engine damage. Vehicle owners can save both time and money by being informed about DPF maintenance schedules and cleaning methods.

Keeping DPF filters in optimal condition helps vehicle owners contribute to cleaner air and extend the lifespan and efficiency of their engines. This article will provide valuable insights for readers who want to learn about the technical workings and benefits of maintaining DPF filters.

What is a DPF Filter, and Why is it Essential in Diesel Engines

A Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is critical for reducing harmful emissions from diesel engines. Capturing and eliminating soot and other particles is instrumental in ensuring compliance with modern environmental regulations. Diesel engines rely on DPFs to maintain effectiveness in controlling pollution.

DPF as a Vital Component in Emission Control

The DPF is central to diesel engine emission control systems. It is fitted into the exhaust to filter and capture particulate matter, including soot generated during combustion. The placement of the DPF just before the NOx trap ensures maximum efficiency in trapping emissions.

As emissions standards become stricter worldwide, the presence of a DPF is imperative. It allows diesel vehicles to meet these regulations by reducing soot emissions, contributing significantly to cleaner air. This function makes it indispensable in public transportation systems and private diesel vehicles. Consequently, DPF systems play a tremendous part in decreasing urban pollution and safeguarding public health.

Purpose of Capturing and Removing Particulate Matter

The primary function of a DPF is to capture and remove particulate matter. This component traps particles within a porous ceramic structure. These particles comprise harmful substances, such as carbon and other unburned hydrocarbons.

Over time, the accumulation of particulates requires the filter to undergo a regeneration process. This process involves burning off the collected soot at high temperatures, restoring the filter’s capacity. This cyclical process is essential in maintaining engine performance and reducing exhaust emissions. DPFs actively prevent pollutants from entering the atmosphere, protecting the environment and public health.

Contribution to Environmental Standards Compliance

DPFs have become a requirement for meeting stringent environmental standards. Vehicles can comply with international regulations by efficiently filtering out particulate matter from diesel engine exhaust. These standards are increasingly demanding in response to health and environmental concerns.

DPFs thus stand as a key technology in the transition to cleaner transportation systems. Through robust emission reduction capabilities, they support efforts to curtail air pollution. The technology ensures vehicles operate within legal emission limits, reflecting the automotive industry’s responsibility toward sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.

Typical Lifespan of a DPF Filter

The typical lifespan of a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is influenced by factors such as driving conditions, maintenance practices, and the vehicle’s engine type. Understanding these elements helps in predicting the filter’s durability and planning for maintenance or replacement.

Average Lifespan Measured in Mileage or Operating Hours

The average lifespan of a DPF filter generally ranges from 100,000 to 150,000 miles. This approximation varies with the type of vehicle and usage conditions. For heavy-duty applications, such as sweepers or garbage trucks, the filters may require servicing earlier, typically between 50,000 to 75,000 miles. Operating hours can also serve as a measure, especially in commercial fleets, where machinery functions in non-driving capacities.

Factors Influencing Durability of the Filter

Several factors impact the lifespan of DPF filters. Driving habits form a significant variable; frequent short trips prevent the filter from reaching the temperatures needed for passive regeneration. The oil type used in the vehicle affects soot accumulation, impacting the filter’s efficiency. Road conditions also play a role; dusty or uneven terrains can accelerate wear and tear, reducing its effective life span.

Impact of Regular Maintenance on Longevity

Consistent maintenance is crucial for extending the service life of a DPF. Regular cleaning and inspections can prevent the build-up of ash and soot, which reduces efficiency and necessitates quicker replacement. Proper oil use and adhering to recommended service intervals can also minimize deposition issues. Monitoring for increased regeneration frequency suggests maintenance is needed and can help in avoiding more costly repairs.

Key Maintenance Tips to Extend DPF Filter Life

Regular maintenance of a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is crucial to prolonging its lifespan and ensuring the optimal performance of diesel engines. This requires understanding practical strategies to maintain these filters, using low-sulfur diesel, and avoiding certain driving habits contributing to early wear.

Practical Maintenance Advice

Maintaining the DPF filter effectively involves consistent monitoring and proactive care. Regular inspection addresses early signs of clogging, helping prevent larger engine issues. Diesel drivers should ensure regular professional cleaning to remove accumulated soot. This reduces blockages, maintaining engine efficiency.

Utilise equipment diagnostics to monitor DPF health. Advanced systems can notify drivers of any issues, prompting timely interventions. Additionally, adhering to engine maintenance schedules ensures that the DPF system operates within its optimal parameters, prolonging its lifespan.

Importance of Using Low-Sulphur Diesel

Low-sulphur diesel is vital for DPF longevity. This type of fuel produces fewer particulates, directly affecting filter performance. The use of high-sulfur diesel results in a significant increase in soot accumulation within the DPF, necessitating more frequent regeneration cycles.

Regeneration is the process of burning off accumulated soot, and less frequent cycles mean less strain on the filter, resulting in extended life. Diesel owners should prioritize fuel quality, as it’s a simple step that greatly reduces DPF maintenance demands.

Benefits of Avoiding Excessive Idling and Short Trips

Avoiding excessive idling and frequent short trips can significantly benefit DPF health. These conditions prevent the DPF from reaching the optimal temperature necessary for passive regeneration, which is required to burn off soot accumulation effectively.

During short trips or extended idling, the engine might not get hot enough, leading to increased soot and potential blockages. Diesel vehicle users are encouraged to incorporate longer journeys when possible, thus ensuring the DPF reaches sufficient temperatures for cleansing processes. This simple practice helps maintain the efficiency and longevity of the DPF system.

Determining When to Replace Your DPF Filter

The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is essential for reducing harmful emissions in diesel engines. Recognizing when to replace it involves examining specific signs of wear or damage. Driving habits also influence the longevity of the DPF, highlighting the importance of routine inspections and timely interventions.

Recognizing Signs of Needing Filter Replacement

Several indicators suggest it’s time to replace your DPF filter. Visible signs include soot staining at the outlet or any noticeable cracks in the filter material. Increased frequency of regenerations is another red flag, as it suggests the filter may be clogged or failing. Drivers should be vigilant if there is a notable decrease in engine performance or unusual exhaust smoke emissions.

Inspect regularly: Constant awareness of these signs can prevent further damage to the engine and ensure the vehicle remains compliant with environmental standards. Early detection can lead to simple cleaning, while sustained damage or severe blockage could necessitate a complete replacement to maintain optimal vehicle function.

Effect of Driving Habits on Replacement Necessity

Daily driving habits significantly impact the lifecycle of a DPF filter. Vehicles used in tough applications, like garbage trucks or sweepers, require more frequent checks and possibly earlier replacement due to their heavy-duty cycles. This can mean cleaning every 50,000 to 75,000 miles and earlier replacement in some cases.

Driving conditions matter: Those operating mostly in city environments with stop-and-go traffic could experience faster filter clogging, particularly if regenerative cycles aren’t completed properly due to insufficient highway driving. Regular long-distance driving can aid in completing these cycles, thus prolonging filter life. Understanding these impacts allows for tailored maintenance schedules, reducing unexpected failures.

Choosing the Right DPF Filter for Your Diesel Engine

When selecting a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) for your diesel engine, it’s crucial to focus on compatibility, quality, and compliance with environmental regulations. Equally important are your engine specifications and intended vehicle use.

Smith is joined by co-owners Brad Daugherty, Mark Hughes and Ernie Cope, who remain dedicated to maintaining the team’s high standards while introducing updated strategies and resources to help bring the team to a new level.

“Becoming the owner of Hyak Motorsports brings an exciting opportunity,” said Gordon Smith, Team Owner/CEO. “I look forward to building on the team’s accomplishments, investing in its future, and driving toward new successes in partnership with our fans, sponsors, and team members.”

The team’s commitment to pushing boundaries and delivering thrilling performances will continue in the 2025 season starting with the NASCAR Clash at Bowman Gray on February 2, 2025, at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

“I’m really excited about 2025 as our company continues to evolve,” said Brad Daugherty, one of the four owners of the team. “Our goal is to compete and win races at the highest level of NASCAR. The name change signifies that commitment and desire to be our very best.”

“2025 will begin a new era for this company,” said Ernie Cope, team co-owner. “We’re still committed to being a winning team with Ricky and the entire No. 47 crew. This is just the next step in elevating the team to another level.”

2025 will mark the team’s third season in NASCAR under the current management. The team has scored a win in each of the last two years and plans to continue this trajectory. Its pinnacle Daytona 500 win came on February 19, 2023, with Ricky Stenhouse Jr who will continue to pilot the No. 47 Chevrolet Camaro next season.

“This rebrand is exciting for the team and myself,” said Ricky Stenhouse Jr, driver for the No. 47 Chevrolet Camaro. “I’m excited for everyone to see the rebrand this offseason and in 2025. The team has won the most iconic of races with the Daytona 500 so this is just a continuation of building its legacy.”

More updates will follow in the NASCAR offseason as the team works to build upon its foundation and look ahead to the 2025 season.

Treyten Lapcevich Looking to be a Contender in Stacked South Carolina 400

Canadian Standout Excited to Race against Late Model Superstars Including Dale Earnhardt Jr.

FLORENCE, S.C.: While most racing divisions are idle for the winter, Late Models will roar to life this weekend at Florence (S.C.) Speedway for the prestigious South Carolina 400.

On the heels of a competitive top-five finish this past weekend at New River All-American Speedway in last Saturday night’s Battle of the Stars race, zMAX CARS Tour Late Model Stock Car Tour standout Treyten Lapcevich eyes not only another strong weekend of racing but also the opportunity to capture the attention of the audience with a pivotal victory at the iconic South Carolina short track.

Armed with the strength of his Chad Bryant Racing team and a defiant game plan, Lapcevich is looking to pick up the pieces from his spring zMAX CARS Tour appearance at the Florence, S.C. short-track and be a contender in what is wildly expected to be one of the most competitive races of the year.

“I’m really excited to get back into the seat at Florence on Saturday,” said Lapcevich. “(It’s) definitely going to be a very competitive field of cars, but I believe that the Chad Bryant Racing No. 77 team is up for the challenge.”

To help with his second Florence Speedway start, Lapcevich relies heavily on the experience of his car owner and crew chief, former ARCA Menards Series championship crew chief Chad Bryant.

“This is a race that Chad (Bryant) has had a lot of success at in the past, so it’s good to have that advice and knowledge on our side,” added Lapcevich. “I’ve been watching old races all week long and trying to develop as much knowledge as I can.”

Finishing just outside the top-10 in the spring in zMAX CARS Tour competition, Lapcevich is well aware of what it will take to try and stay ahead of the competition on Nov. 23.

“When we were at Florence earlier this year with the CARS Tour and had a decent showing,” recalled Lapcevich. “We qualified fourth and finished just outside the top-10 after struggling late in the race. It’s undoubtedly a difficult track, especially with how abrasive it is on the tires.

“That was a good experience for me to have prior to the race this weekend. I’m looking to apply what I learned to testing to make sure we make the right adjustments and pace myself the right way in the race.”

Knowing this weekend’s annual fall contest will feature an array of competitors of various disciplines and clout, Lapcevich is remaining focused on the job at hand. He hopes a respectful but competitive performance will earn him the respect he continues to try to gain both on and off the race track.

“I think there’s no doubt that the competition will be tough this weekend,” reflected Lapcevich. “I compare it similarly to Martinsville earlier this year, but that being said, we’ve run in high competition with the CARS Tour all year.

Our goal remains the same; we just have to focus on how our car is handling and not get too caught up in the speed charts during practice. It’s great that Dale (Earnhardt Jr.) comes and runs a Late Model Stock Car with us — he doesn’t need to, but he enjoys it. It also brings a lot of eyes to the event, so everyone wins.

“This is going to be my last race of the season with the No. 77 team; therefore, I’m looking to end it on a high note.

To take the checkered flag on a remarkable season as the pilot of Chad Bryant Racing’s No. 77 Evirum |Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship Chevrolet, Lapcevich realizes a good pace and smart racing will keep him in contention for the entire 250-lap race.

“It’s a long race, so I’m just looking to pace myself and be up front to compete for the win at the night’s end,” sounded Lapcevich. “Strategy is going to play a big part in this race, so I think there’s going to be a big focus on that to ensure that we are giving ourselves the best shot at ending up in Victory Lane.

“I’ve had a lot of fun with the Chad Bryant Racing team this year, and I want to end it off on a high note this year.

“I’m going to give it the best effort I possibly can in hopes of ending up in victory lane at the end of the night.”

The 32nd annual South Carolina 400 is set from Florence (S.C.) Motor Speedway on Sat., Nov. 23, 2024, and will air live on FloRacing.

Lapcevich’s plans for the 2025 racing season will be announced in due course.
