CORNELIUS, N.C. — No. 56 NAPA AUTO PARTS driver Martin Truex Jr. is leading the charge in the cleanup process from Hurricane Sandy.

Truex said he’s stunned by the damage to his hometown of Mayetta, N.J. and in the surrounding areas wrought by this week’s hurricane.

Now he’s calling on his and all NASCAR fans to join in the relief effort.

His Martin Truex Jr. Foundation is collecting monetary donations and donators are asked to visit his website at martintruexjrfoundation.org to help.

“I want the people of Mayetta and everyone back East impacted by Sandy to know that I’m thinking about them and will do whatever possible to provide relief quickly,” Truex said. “My family, my friends, and everyone impacted by this disaster are in our thoughts. I’m humbled by the generosity of the NASCAR community and want to thank each of you in advance for contributing to our relief effort.”

Truex and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday in the seventh of the sport’s Chase for the Championship. The Michael Waltrip Racing driver is seventh in points — 63 points out of first.

His No. 56 Carlyle Tools by NAPA Toyota will carry a special decal calling attention to the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation’s fundraising effort.

Martin Truex Jr. on Returning to Texas: “In the spring we were really good at Texas. We sat on the pole, led 69 laps and finished sixth. This is a good track for this NAPA team. Mile-and-a-half tracks have been good for us all season. I feel like the stuff we did in Atlanta over a month or so is definitely going to work this weekend. I am definitely looking forward to going back and we’ll have a new paint scheme on board with us. I’ll be driving the Carlyle Tools by NAPA Toyota. We want to run well so we can help launch NAPA’s new line of tools. The paint scheme looks great and I’ve added a decal to our car to promote the Hurricane Sandy fundraising effort that my Martin Truex Jr. Foundation is doing.”

Truex on Championship Bid: “Martinsville was tough to swallow. We had a top-five NAPA Toyota and I simply made a mistake on a restart. MWR once again had three very competitive cars for the race. For me, it was one of those deals that I hated to see happen especially with where we are sitting in points. Unfortunately, I can’t change it now. Looking back, this hasn’t been the Chase effort that we wanted. We still have three races left and the cool part for us is the last three races are at our best tracks. I cannot tell you how glad I am to have these next three races coming up. I realize that our chances of winning this championship are extremely tough, but we certainly would be pleased to finish out our season with a couple of wins and a top-five finish in the point standings. We have had such a good year and had so many chances to win. We definitely want a win before the year is out.”
