Pocono Raceway Bolsters Green Initiatives: Teams with ZLOOP to Host Earth Day Challenge April 20th

Long Pond, PA (April 5, 2013) — Pocono Raceway, a leader in the sports industry for their ongoing Pocono Green initiatives, has joined in a partnership with ZLOOP Computer and Electronics Recycling Centers to provide a way to get rid of unwanted and unused electronics safely and securely…. and at no cost!

The Raceway will conduct an e-Waste recycling and data destruction event on Saturday, April 20 from 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM. Communities, companies, school districts and individuals are encouraged to drop off their unwanted electronics, no matter how large or small.

As an incentive to recycle, Pocono Raceway will provide two grandstand tickets, to the racing action on Saturday June 8, for each per person who participates in this recycling effort. The June 8 schedule includes two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice sessions and the Pocono 200, ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards race. Additionally, each person can enter a drawing to win a grand prize, consisting of four Terrace Bistro VIP tickets to the July 7, Pocono. INDYCAR 400.

Communities and school districts can compete for the “bragging rights” for recycling the most e-Waste materials.

The company or corporation that recycles the most e-Waste materials will receive free advertising on the ZLOOP stock car that will be competing in the Pocono 200. This event will be nationally televised on the SPEED channel and advertising includes company logos on the Venturini Motorsports No. 25 ZLOOP sponsored car along with in-focus exposure via the “in-car” camera.

In an ever-changing high tech world the amount of e-Waste collecting in every American household continues to build. In most cases people are unaware of the dangers of e-Waste to the environment and unfamiliar with SAFE e-Waste disposal practices of their unwanted or unused electronics, such as cell phones, computers, monitors or virtually anything with an electronic cord.

The growing number of electronic goods in the U.S. is no secret. The life expectancy of everyday electronics is not long to begin with, but is cut even shorter as new technologies and gadgets are introduced. Americans want the newest model, a nicer brand, the next new thing… and are quick to leave their old models behind.

The heavy metals they contain threaten to pollute the air, soil, and water, harming the environment and our communities. Electronics are an essential part of life but the disposal of these products, in an environmentally friendly manner, is a challenge.

While other types of municipal waste are decreasing, e-Waste is growing by five percent annually. Although e-Waste makes up only two percent of America’s trash in landfills, it accounts for 70 percent of overall toxic waste.

25 states including Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey have passed e-waste recycling laws, 15 of which include disposal bans.

“We are very excited about our unique partnership with Pocono Raceway”, says Zloop’s Founder and CMO Bob LaBarge, “we look forward to working with Pocono to educate their fan base on the importance of properly recycling eWaste and making it easy and secure for the community to do just that.”

Pocono Raceway, a member of the Green Sports Alliance (GSA), is considered one of the most environmentally conscious tracks in NASCAR and the entire sports world. The GSA is a nonprofit organization that helps the professional sports industry enhance its environmental performance and harness potential for large-scale behavior change.

In August of 2010, Pocono Raceway completed their 3MW Pocono Solar Project which features nearly 40,000 American Made Photovoltaic modules covering 25 acres of land adjacent to the race track. The Project will produce more than 72 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of energy over the next 20 years. The environmental attributes associated with the system will offset more than 3,100 Metric Tons of carbon dioxide annually, Carbon Dioxide emissions from 106,529 propane BBQ grills and it will generate enough power to provide the electricity needs for close to 300 homes beyond the power needs of the Raceway.
