CHARLOTTE, N.C. (May 14, 2014) – After a three-year absence from the Sprint All-Star Race, Martin Truex Jr. returns to the prestigious event, which will be contested Saturday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
A four-time Sprint All-Star participant, Truex made his last appearance in the non-points race in 2010 when he finished second, collecting $233,299 for the runner-up finish.
Truex, driver of the No. 78 Furniture Row/Denver Mattress Chevrolet, qualified for the 2014 Sprint All-Star race based on his victory last June in Sonoma, Calif.
“The Sprint All-Star Race is a no-holds-barred prestigious weekend for NASCAR,” said Truex. “Bringing home a victory in the All-Star Race not only pays a lot of money ($1 million) but also carries plenty of career prestige.”
Along with his runner-up posting in the 2010 All-Star Race, Truex has also had finishes of 22nd in 2005, 10th in 2007 and 16th in 2008.
“We feel that our Furniture Row Chevrolet has the potential to not only contend for the All-Star Race, but also contend in the following week’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte,” stated Truex. “We’ve been a few tweaks short of running upfront and hopefully the two Charlotte races will turn around our season.”
The starting lineup for the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race will be determined by time trials consisting of three laps including a four-tire pit stop. The total time will determine the lineup. Time trials will take place on the same day of the All-Star Race.
The NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race will include five segments with the first four segments consisting of 20 laps each and a final 10-lap segment.
Following the first three segments, there are optional pit stops and five caution laps. The field will be set by pit stop/stay out track position after each of the first three segments.
Following the fourth segment, the running order will be repositioned based on the average finish for the first four segments prior to pit road opening for the mandatory four-tire pit stop.
The order of cars returning to the track will determine the order for the fifth and final segment. The running-order ties will be broken by the finish of the fourth segment. The final fifth segment is winner take all for the $1 million payday.
