WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (August 9, 2014) – Trevor Bayne finished in the 13th position on Saturday afternoon in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) event at Watkins Glen International after overcoming early contact that damaged the left-front fender of the No.6 AdvoCare Ford Mustang.
“I’m happy we got back to 13th,” said Bayne after the race. “We started off the race fast and just tried to bide our time in the early stages. I hate that we got caught up in those incidents today. I just want to thank Chad (Norris) and everyone on this No.6 AdvoCare team for not giving up . They did a great job repairing the left-front fender and I’m really happy we were able to rally back to get a 13th-place finish. Hopefully next weekend we can keep our nose clean and finish up front at Mid-Ohio.”
Bayne took the green flag for the 82-Lap event from 16th and steadily worked his way forward, making his way to 14th by the completion of the first lap. While maintaining his position inside the top 15, Bayne made contact with another car heading into the “bus stop” chicane, damaging the left-front fender. The driver of the No.6 AdvoCare Ford Mustang was forced to make an unscheduled pit stop as the caution flag waved on Lap 11 for repairs. After pitting several times during the caution period, Bayne returned to the track in the 35th position.
Bayne would not run 35th for long, as he drove his way up to the 23rd position as the second caution of the afternoon came out on Lap 25 for an incident with the No. 23 car. While under caution, crew chief Chad Norris called Bayne back to pit road for more repairs. After pitting three more times and being forced to start at the tail end of the longest line due to a blend line penalty, Bayne found himself in the 30th position as the race went back to green on Lap 30.
Undeterred by the penalty, Bayne began to charge forward, gaining seven positions on the first lap back to green. The driver of the AdvoCare Ford did not stop there as he worked his way back into the top 20 after a Lap 38 restart following an incident with the No. 28 car. Bayne continued to move forward, working his way up to the 11th position just prior to the start of green flag pit stops.
Bayne maintained his position inside the top 20 until a Lap 58 caution gave crew chief Norris and crew another opportunity to improve the handling of the No. 6 Mustang. After pitting for four tires and a trackbar adjustment, Bayne returned to the track 23rd, but only needed three laps on the ensuing restart to improve to 17th. Bayne improved four more positions in the closing stages and battled with Roush Fenway Racing teammate Ryan Reed for position until ultimately earning a 13th-place finish.
With the result, Bayne is now sixth in the championship standings and trails championship leader Chase Elliott by 48 points as the NNS heads to Mid-Ohio next weekend.
