AUSTIN DILLON QUOTES:

What do you think about Kansas Speedway?

“I’m really comfortable at Kansas Speedway. I’ve earned pole awards there in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, and I feel like I’ve made quite a few laps there in both of those Series. I made my first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series start there. It’s a fun track and it’s getting even more fun as the surface wears in, following the repave.”

Last time in Kansas … The RCR driver started the spring event at Kansas Speedway from the 16th position and fought a loose-handling car for a majority of the race. Crew chief Slugger Labbe directed the team to tighten the Chevrolet up during pit stops and Menard was able to race his way back on the lead lap, which led to a 17th-place finish.

PAUL MENARD QUOTES:

What did you take away from Kansas Speedway in the spring knowing it may be different this time?

“Kansas has been a really good track for us the last couple of years since the repave and even before that, actually. We really did not run well in the spring, so I’m feeling anxious to get back there and try to improve on what we’ve done in the past and try to get back on track at Kansas. It’s been a good track, we just let ourselves down in the spring.”

Are you able to notice the aging of the asphalt or widening of the groove each time you go back?

“It’s losing grip, but our cars keep getting faster with the new rules over the last few years. It really doesn’t do the track any favors. I’m not sure what the weather is going to be like. It was cool in the spring and it will probably be cool again, so I’m not sure it’s going to change a whole lot other than it probably lost some grip over the hot summer months. Hopefully that’s the case, the track is widening out. We ran the second or third groove quite a bit in the spring so if it did lose grip in the summer, then the groove will just be wider.”

RYAN NEWMAN QUOTES:

How much does Kansas Speedway change from the spring race to the fall event?

“It all depends on the weather. I think it will be the biggest decision factor on determining what the racing is going to be like. I think it’s going to be good to see the track with another summer aging it. I think the racing is going to be even better.”

What does it take to run well?

“The track is super smooth and super fast. It takes a lot of power. You spend so much time wide open and it will take a well-balanced car.”

How important will this race be in the Contender Round knowing that Talladega is one of the three races?

“Kansas Speedway and Charlotte Motor Speedway are going to be so important for us to do well in this segment because Talladega is going to be such a crap shoot. It sure would be nice to win Kansas or Charlotte to take Talladega totally out of the mix.”

How would you rank the performance of the No. 31 team so far in The Chase?

“We’ve certainly gone through some adversity with the tire issue at Chicagoland Speedway and having a damaged car at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. After New Hampshire, we were still able to move up four positions in the points so we’ve done well. It’s all about being able to close the deal in each segment and we certainly did that at Dover. I cannot say enough about the team effort to get our Dover car to the point that we could contend for a transfer spot and finish top 10. I really like our positioning now. We are on an absolutely even playing field. There are no wins, no bonus points, nothing right now. We have a better shot now than we ever did.”

BRIAN SCOTT QUOTE:

Kansas Speedway has recently been paved. Is it starting to come back now?

“Kansas is strange, I’m not really sure what I feel about Kansas. I am hoping that another year has wore the surface out. I’m hoping that the groove gets a little wider; I’m hoping we can have a Goodyear tire that falls of a little bit so we can really go out there as competitors and race. With the new surface and the flat track Kansas is, it seems like in the past our races have been one grooved. It’s been a track position race where you don’t take four tires, you get fuel only or you get right sides, and you just try to get that track position to get up front. If you do, it makes it difficult for cars to pass you. Or on the other hand, if you have a really fast car and you fall back it makes it difficult to pass cars that are worse than you. Since the Nationwide Series only goes there once a year, the surfaces change a lot and Goodyear likes to change up our combination of tires that we go to certain race tracks with. So, I’m hoping another year and maybe a different tire combination when we head to Kansas will make it pretty racey, because that’s a great track that you used to be able to run three grooves.”

This is the first time you will race at Kansas Speedway in a Nationwide Series car. What is your approach?

“It will be a similar approach that I’ve had all season with tracks that I have lesser experience; get as much practice time I can and learn the ins and outs of the track. Practice will be critical this week to get this Bass Pro Chevy dialed in. Danny (Stockman, crew chief) and I have talked a lot about this race and I think we will be very competitive. Our 1.5-mile program has really been strong this season, just take a look at our 1-2-3 finish in Kentucky two weeks ago. BRENDAN GAUGHAN QUOTE:

As a newly paved race track, have the grooves at Kansas Speedway changed?

“The groove is widening every race. That is one thing that you can guarantee every race, that groove will increase. Both the track and the racing will continue to get better and better. Right now the track is still super fast for the style of mile-and-a-half it is, just blistering fast. It is a track where RCR Chevrolets and ECR horsepower should do well.”
