Clint Bowyer No. 15 AAA Insurance Toyota Dover Preview

It Can Be a Monster

CORNELIUS, N.C. —  It’s a battle on concrete as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series travels to Dover International Speedway.

Dover is one of two completely concrete tracks on the circuit. The one-mile oval is known for quick speeds with its 24-degree banking in the turns. So it can be a bit of a monster for drivers, hence its nickname the Monster Mile.

One bobble can spell disaster in the tight, quick confines. But in 18 starts Clint Bowyer has brought his No. 15 AAA Insurance Toyota Camry across the stripe all 18 times and has completed 99.7% of the 7,200 laps run at the track. He has also finished in the top 10 in more than half of those starts.

And while it can be a monster for drivers, Bowyer is hoping he can tame the monster and bring his No. 15 AAA Insurance Toyota to victory lane.

What are the keys to getting around Dover?

“It takes a group effort to have a good run there. But holy cow, that’s a fun place to race. You fall off a ledge and fall right back into the gas. You throttle through the corner a lot more than you do at other places because of the banking, because of the concrete. You can flat haul the mail there. How we don’t wreck more often is beyond me.”
